What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?
1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your product
and why?
2. Institution Research
• I conducted some extra research into
other film production/distribution
companies to build upon the research
previously conducted.
• This will help me to gain a better
understanding of which company would
best distribute our media product, which
would be quite a low-budget film.
3. Film4 Productions
• British film production company owned by
Channel Four Television Corporation.
• Thriller/horror productions:
– Trance (2013)
– Donkey Punch (2009)
– Hush (2008)
– The Imposter (2012)
– The Scouting Book for Boys (2009)
4. Vertigo Films
• British film production and distribution
company founded in 2002.
• Productions/distributions:
– The Children (2008)
– Shrooms (2007)
– WΔZ (2007)
– The Escapist (2008)
– Pusher (2012)
– Spring Breakers (2013)
5. Warner Bros.
• One of the world’s leading entertainment
companies.
• Thriller/horror productions and
distributions:
– Se7en (1995)
– Sweeney Todd (2007)
– Contagion (2011)
– The Fugitive (1993)
– Inception (2010)
6. Hammer Films
• Film production company in the UK
founded in 1934.
• Thriller/horror productions and
distributions:
– The Woman in Black (2012)
– Let Me In (2010)
– The Resident (2011)
– Wake Wood (2011)
7. Film4 Productions - I think that Film4
Productions could potentially distribute our
media product, because they have
produced a few successful thrillers before,
but no psychological thrillers with a similar
storyline to ours. Therefore, by distributing
our product it would appeal to the
audience of the previous films in the same
genre. Additionally, they normally produce
quite low-budget films, similar to ours.
8. Vertigo Films – this company could
potentially distribute our media product,
due to the fact they have distributed a lot
of low-budget films before. The company
are well-known due to previously
producing and distributing popular films,
but as it is not an extremely large
company, it means that our media product
would be well publicised and it would
attract the audience we are looking for.
9. Hammer Films - I also think Hammer
Films could be suitable for distributing our
media product. This is because they have
produced very successful thrillers and
horrors, such as The Woman in Black, and
by distributing a psychological thriller such
as our piece, ‘Deceased Memory’; it may
attract members of the audience from their
previous memories. Also, not all of the
films are extremely high-budget, so
Hammer Films are a possibility.
10. Warner Bros. - I do not think our media
product could be distributed by a firm like
Warner Bros., due to the large scale of the
firm and the high-budget films they
produce, which are not similar to our piece
at all. Despite producing and distributing
films that fall into the thriller genre, they
are not low-budget films, which is what
would be important due to the small size
of our production.
11. • I strongly feel that our media product would not
be distributed by one of the 6 major American
film production and distribution companies – 20 th
Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures,
Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros.
• This is because their films are high-budget and
unlike our piece due to our small scale
production, and we would be targeting the British
audience, so a production and distribution
company in the UK producing low-budget films
would be much more suitable for distributing our
media product.
12. • I feel that either Vertigo Films or Film4 would be
best for the distribution of our film and might
potentially distribute it.
• The reason for this is that they are both British
film production and distribution companies, so
they could effectively promote the film to target
the audience, whilst remaining quite low-budget.
The previous films distributed by the companies
are similar as well, and if we were to pitch our
ideas to these firms then I feel the original
storyline would be appealing.
