An institution is a company that publishes and distributes media like films. They decide whether to fund productions. The film production process begins with developing a concept and story, then casting, filming, and editing. Smaller companies like Metrodome that focus on British social films would be best for distributing a niche British horror/comedy film. Bigger studios wouldn't be suitable due to the lower budget and more targeted genre of the film. Metrodome successfully distributed similar niche films and is best able to support this production.

Question 3 media
1. What is an institution?
An institution is a company that withholds rights to
publish media products to audiences, such as DVD’s
released out to shops. They can be published world
wide or locally.
Before the released of the film it is the institutions
job to decide whether they’d like to fund or help
with the production at all.
2. The first stage of production begins with a key concept,
being creative and inspired enough to bring a film to life.
This includes having a good idea of the narrative and applying it with

Depending on what producers want it could also be presented on TV.
3. What companies distribute films in the
genre?
After researching the following films, I have a brief idea which institutions
could distribute mine:
ZombieLand
God Help the Girl
The World’s End
Shaun of the Dead
4. God Help the Girl
God Help the Girl is a metrodome
production which is within Britain and
tends to base their productions around
social experiences. The film ‘Diana’ was
also institutionalised by metrodome who
was a British phenomenon.
5. Shaun of the Dead used Universal pictures to
release their film also with studio canal.
Universal included in the ‘Big Six’ category is
owned by Comcast. However, studio canal is a
French film company who own the third
biggest film library world wide making it
unlikely they’d distribute my film.
6. Scream Queens
Scream Queens is a horror/comedy
which fits the genres of my film perfectly.
It is disrupted by 20th century fox for
America and UK.
Since it’s a lower budget it’s possible it’d
be good for my film but my film is niche
in comparison to the productions 20th
century fox have.
7. Zombieland
Zombieland used Columbia pictures to release their film. They’re also a
member of the ‘big six’ and usually release in America. Columbia pictures
is also subsidiary to Sony Pictures and as my film is quite niche it is unlikely
one of the big six could institute Mindless.
8. The companies
Companies which produce films that would be similar to
mine are; Metrodome, Studio Canal and Working title.
I feel any of the ‘big six’ would be the wrong direction to
take to distribute my film is niche and the budget wouldn’t
cut it down that route.
9. Universal Pictures
With universal pictures they have 25 highest grossing films
and work with a lot of different genres like bridemaids ,
Jurassic park and Les miserable. I feel Universal pictures
wouldn’t be good at disrupting my film as they have not
released many horror/thriller/comedy/realistic type films
with any of my chosen genres alongside the same sub-
genre meaning it’d be difficult.
10. Advertisement
Films can be advertised by; trailers, posters,
magazines, interviews, guerrilla marketing etc.
Although, most commonly the trailers method is used.
Trailers help show off the film subtlety to give better
ideas of the narrative. If the film is released direct to
the DVD there would not be many trailer
advertisements and only really advertisement for the
release date of the DVD.
11. Warner Bros.
Warner bro. work with many fantasy surreal styled
movies such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Batman, The
Hobbit etc. Films with the same genre as mindless
didn’t do so well at the box office which is why I feel
it’d be a risky decision to make on warner bros. Also,
Warner bros. works with many children’s films meaning
it’s not applicable for my product being a 16-24 target
audience.
12. Metrodome would be best to institute my film as Mindless is a
niche British horror/thriller film due to its British conventional binge
drinking and British accents etc. Also, the locations are all within
Britain making it overall a realistic British production.
Mindless would also be good publicity if it were to be accepted
to Sundance studio as it is an independent niche film alongside being
quirky and having so many genres more people are bound to like.
13. In conclusion
Overall I think a company that works with sub-genres similar
to my film would be a good to look for, as well as a company
typically British and not too famous in the film production
world. Therefore, Metrodome would be perfect for my product
due to it’s British conventions and how well it’d come together
in the end. It is not too big of a budget and advertising it
wouldn’t be a problem as they go to great extents to help
some products (when advertising Donnie Darko they used
guerrilla marketing which is illegal) to help spread the word to
local/wider audiences.
