2. What is a film Distribution
Film distribution refer to all that happens in
between production which is the making the
film and presentation (people watching the
film through TV , cinema, DVD, via the
internet, anywhere) Distribution includes all
the deals done to get the film shown including
the promotion.
3. Importance of a Film Distribution
The importance of having a film institution to research
into before creating your own film/opening sequence is
so you can see particular techniques used that attract
the audiences back to their films, which can be used to
help gain or attract an audience similar.
Furthermore, a film institution only produces
certain films, meaning they have a particular
audience which they try to catch every time.
Institutions also have techniques which help
this, for example, releasing films at
certain times of the year e.g. certain seasonal holidays.
4. Media Institution
A media institution is a well established
organization that deals with the creation and
distribution of media products.
The main major film studios : Paramount,
Columbia, Universal, Warner Bros and 20th
Century Fox.
However I think the media distribution that might
distribute my film would be a smaller company
called Lionsgate. This is because in general they
have produced more thriller/horror films than other
major film studios.
5. Target audience
Younger audiences like my target audience (15-
25) may find that different institutions produce
films that they do not find attractive and want to
watch, for example Pixar would not be an
institution that i would use, not because of the
films they make but because of their target
audience range. Their target audience ranged
from the ages of 1-10, as they use specific
language for this age group and their age
certificates are usually either 'U' or 'PG'.
6. Film Distributors
The film distribution companies, that I will
research to distribute the film will be half
American And half British - although some of
these American companies are larger and
well known it is important to also look at
British film distributors.
7. Paramount Pictures
Paramount Pictures’ in the main film
distributor for ‘Psycho’. ! ‘Paramount
Pictures’ is a motion picture film company
and has its film studio in Hollywood,
California, United States. ! It is one of the
worlds largest film companies and has also
been running for over 100 years.
8. Lionsgate
Lionsgate is one of the most commercially successful
independent studios, as well as one of the most
profitable.
Lionsgate have produced many television series and
films in the thriller genre for example, 'Five days to
midnight' 'The dead zone' and 'American Psycho'.
Out of all the other major film companies, Lionsgate has
produced the most thriller films, leading me to believe
they would be the most likely to want to produce it.
9. ENTERTAINMENT !
The largest independent distributor in the UK,
Entertainment has had a relationship with US
mini-studio New Line for many years.
It also releases mainstream UK fare, both
theatrically and via Entertainment-in-Video. !
Titles include: Rush Hour, Brokeback
Mountain, The Departed ! UK titles include:
Stormbreaker, St Trinian's
10. Evaluation
The institution I would use to release my thriller
opening sequence , Unknown would be Lionsgate.
This is because Lionsgate is a prominent film
company due to its success and how long its been
around for many years. A well-known institution
like Lionsgate is something many viewers like
when going to watch a film at the cinema. This is
ideal for my thriller because Lionsgate is also well-
known for creating thriller films
