2. What is a Film
Distribution Company?
• A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the
marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of
a film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or
made available for viewing in cinemas globally or in local
cinemas. To continue after they have been in the cinemas
they also produce the films on other formats such as DVD’s,
blue-ray and films on demand. They also create a “buzz”
about the film through marketing and social media.
3. Here’s an example of a
major film distributor:
Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. is a
key major distributor as it distributes
many of the top blockbuster films
such as Harry potter, The Hobbit and
many other big high costing films.
They also produce many TV series
such as Friends, The Big Bang Theory
and Arrow.
4. Here’s an example of a
independent film
distributor:
Formed in 1999, Icon Film Distribution is
one of the UK’s leading independent
film distributors generating in excess of
£150m at the box office with a library of
over 200 titles ranging from mainstream
hits such as Paranormal Activity, 30 Days
of Night, Transporter 3 and What
Woman Want to specialist break-out
titles such as Tom Ford’s A Single Man, La
Vie En Rose, Man On Wire, and multiple
BAFTA and Oscar nominee Nicolas
Winding Refn’s Drive.
5. Our Film
• I feel that our film will appeal more to an independent film
producer as it is quite a low budget film and isn’t doesn't’t
really suite a high profile Hollywood film because it’s based
around British culture which other people around the world
such as America may not understand our culture or find this
film relatable. Also I feel our film is quite similar to a British
film called Shifty which was produced by an independent
film distributor. This may bring interest into our film as it is very
similar to Shifty and they may want to produce another film
like Shifty because it worked so well.
6. Possible Marketing
Strategies
• I think that the marketing strategies should be so that as many
people are able to see and know about the film, so it creates
a “buzz” about it. Increasing the amount of people who are
likely to watch our film.
• I feel that we should aim our marketing ideas at social media
such as Facebook and Twitter because it will cheap and easy
to get onto the social media sites. Also it will reach our target
market easily as they all use these social media sites so this will
increase the amount of people seeing the advert which will
increase the chance of people going and watching the film.
