What is a Media Institution?
A media institution is the established organisation which would deal with the creation,
distribution, advertising, entertainment and information services when creating our product.
Thriller/Horror Films have rapidly become one of the most top selling genres meaning that distributers that
are involved in this genre are in deep competition and are constantly trying to bring new things to the table in
order to keep on top and not fall in the industry.
Currently, some of the most known horror distributers include;
- New Line Cinema
- Columbia Pictures
- Twisted Pictures
- DreamWorks Pictures
- Paramount Pictures
Major or Independent?
Major: A production and distribution company that releases a numerous number of films annually and earns a
significant share of the box-office revenues in the market compared to an independent distributer.
Independent (or Indie): A professional film production which produces films which do not work with the major film
studio system – they are produced by independent entertainment companies and are initially produced without
financing or distribution from major movie studios.
I believe my media product would be distributed by a independent distribution company (perhaps a subsidiary) reason for this
is that if my media product were to actually be published for the public a major company would not finance the film, this is due
to the fact that major distribution companies already have subsidiaries in which they depend on in order to produce films, for
example, since 2008 New Line Cinema turned into a subsidiary of a major company called Warner Bros.
From my own research I have also found that most horror films are produced by independent distributors;
The Ring: DreamWorks Pictures (Subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios)
The Grudge: Columbia Pictures (Subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment)
NEW LINE CINEMA
I believe the Media Institution which would most likely distribute my product would be the American company - New Line
Cinema. New Line Cinema was founded in 1976 by Robert Shaye as a film production company, it later turned into an
independent studio which resulted in it become a subsidiary for Tuner Broadcasting and merging with Warner Bros in 2008.
Although New Line Cinema is not a major company it is a subsidiary and part of Warner Bros which is a worldwide known
major studio, this would allow me to get a sufficient amount of publicity for the product, not only this but the larger
company (Warner Bros) would finance & distribute the product therefore resulting in an overall larger success – It would be
distributed worldwide which involves a higher revenue.
Over the last 3 years New Line Cinema has distributed the very well known film The Conjuring which was one of the many
films which I analysed and took inspiration from, alongside the conjuring New Line Cinema has been responsible for other
very well known films such as Final Destination & Texas Chainsaw Massacre – It can be argued that all these films in some
way can relate to my own product seeing as especially, the conjuring in one way or another they all have a type of plot which
involves a type of curse or possession – my products plot revolves around paranormal activity which is also seen in the film
The Conjuring.
From research, I have found that in the years to come more horror films are going to be distributed by this company, those
of which include: Six Gun Dead, The Conjuring 2 showing that this Institution are interested in releasing more horror films
showing that if my media product were to be made public New Line Cinema would be a main candidate in which whom
would be interested of distributing my product.
New Line Cinema, although not major has a significant fraction in box office revenues;
Final Destination 3: $54,098,051
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: $80,571,655
A Nightmare on Elm Street : $29,999,213
On an average with solely 247 new line cinema has earned around $7,385,981,314 of Box office revenues.

  • 2. What is a Media Institution? A media institution is the established organisation which would deal with the creation, distribution, advertising, entertainment and information services when creating our product. Thriller/Horror Films have rapidly become one of the most top selling genres meaning that distributers that are involved in this genre are in deep competition and are constantly trying to bring new things to the table in order to keep on top and not fall in the industry. Currently, some of the most known horror distributers include; - New Line Cinema - Columbia Pictures - Twisted Pictures - DreamWorks Pictures - Paramount Pictures
  • 3. Major or Independent? Major: A production and distribution company that releases a numerous number of films annually and earns a significant share of the box-office revenues in the market compared to an independent distributer. Independent (or Indie): A professional film production which produces films which do not work with the major film studio system – they are produced by independent entertainment companies and are initially produced without financing or distribution from major movie studios. I believe my media product would be distributed by a independent distribution company (perhaps a subsidiary) reason for this is that if my media product were to actually be published for the public a major company would not finance the film, this is due to the fact that major distribution companies already have subsidiaries in which they depend on in order to produce films, for example, since 2008 New Line Cinema turned into a subsidiary of a major company called Warner Bros. From my own research I have also found that most horror films are produced by independent distributors; The Ring: DreamWorks Pictures (Subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios) The Grudge: Columbia Pictures (Subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment)
  • 4. NEW LINE CINEMA I believe the Media Institution which would most likely distribute my product would be the American company - New Line Cinema. New Line Cinema was founded in 1976 by Robert Shaye as a film production company, it later turned into an independent studio which resulted in it become a subsidiary for Tuner Broadcasting and merging with Warner Bros in 2008. Although New Line Cinema is not a major company it is a subsidiary and part of Warner Bros which is a worldwide known major studio, this would allow me to get a sufficient amount of publicity for the product, not only this but the larger company (Warner Bros) would finance & distribute the product therefore resulting in an overall larger success – It would be distributed worldwide which involves a higher revenue. Over the last 3 years New Line Cinema has distributed the very well known film The Conjuring which was one of the many films which I analysed and took inspiration from, alongside the conjuring New Line Cinema has been responsible for other very well known films such as Final Destination & Texas Chainsaw Massacre – It can be argued that all these films in some way can relate to my own product seeing as especially, the conjuring in one way or another they all have a type of plot which involves a type of curse or possession – my products plot revolves around paranormal activity which is also seen in the film The Conjuring. From research, I have found that in the years to come more horror films are going to be distributed by this company, those of which include: Six Gun Dead, The Conjuring 2 showing that this Institution are interested in releasing more horror films showing that if my media product were to be made public New Line Cinema would be a main candidate in which whom would be interested of distributing my product. New Line Cinema, although not major has a significant fraction in box office revenues; Final Destination 3: $54,098,051 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: $80,571,655 A Nightmare on Elm Street : $29,999,213 On an average with solely 247 new line cinema has earned around $7,385,981,314 of Box office revenues.
