1. After researching various film production companies, I came to a conclusion that the media institution that might distribute my media product would be
‘New Line Cinema’ . This is because, even though my product isn’t popular and professional, and despite the fact that our cast isn’t well known etc. I still feel
that they would be the best company to distribute my product, due to the context of my film opening. New Line Cinema have created movies with contexts
that are similar to my product, in addition, their movies have inspired me to create a film opening with a suspenseful and gripping storyline. Furthermore, as
New Line Cinema have created movies like Se7en which has a similar plot to my product, revolving around a serial killer, Instead my film opening is about a
psycho stalker rather than a serial killer, however, it involves similar concepts such as ‘killing’, ‘murder’ and ‘death’. Another reason, as to why I personally
would want New Line Cinema to distribute my film, is because, they have a good reputation for distributing films that fit their genre and meet the audiences
expectations, such as ‘Annabelle’, ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘The Hobbit’ which are all unique and increasingly popular films within the film industry appealing to
various audiences of both genders. In my perspective, this makes ‘New Line Cinema’ popular as they are successful on an international scale, especially in
the US and England. ‘New Line Cinema’ are also popular for making films which are of the thriller genre, which is what my film opening genre is, for
example, ‘Se7en’ and ‘The Butterfly Effect’, which are popular thriller films that are highly rated by the wider audience including people of various age
groups. These particular films are also psychological thrillers, highlighting that ‘New Line Cinema’ are not only prominent for distributing thriller films but
they are also popular for distributing psychological and suspenseful thrillers which has encouraged me to choose ‘New Line Cinema’ as the company that
would distribute my product and the company that I would personally prefer to have as the distribution company for my product and to take on similar sub-
genre conventions. Furthermore, I have chosen them due to other factors including the positive reputation within the film industry and high popularity
amongst international audiences.
My film Opening is more likely to be independently distributed, this is because most independent films aim to deliver social realism and verisimilitude which
I feel our film opening includes. Furthermore, our production company name ‘Moon Studios’ is perceptibly not as well known as big Hollywood production
companies such as ’20th Century Fox’ and does not look as professionally made either. However, we could compare our product to ‘Vertigo Films’, another
independent company, which isn’t as popular and known as perhaps institutions such as, Universal Studios etc. Therefore, I think our thriller genre film
opening may be suitable for an independent release due to an institutionally unknown production company and low budget production stage, with a cast of
people that aren’t popularly known worldwide such as people like, Brad Pitt or Will Smith etc.
The distributors of our film would be companies who have previously dealt with independent clients such as VUE, Curzon or Everyman cinema which can be
easily accessed by the public. These various distributors would be named in the titles of a film so they can advertise their own product through the
screening. Alternatively, we could also distribute our film by a UK independent cinema chain, as this is a cheaper option and would make more money.
Also, my film opening would get noticed at places like film festivals, which means I would get promoted and therefore this would be the first step to making
my film visible to the public, resulting with a successful finish.
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
