Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?
Distribution
1. Distribution
Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience. Distributors sometimes choose to
launch films at a suitable international festival, where critics and insiders may discover them allowing them to master the
early reviews. The processes included in distribution (the distribution channel) are; 1) Distributors sign a formal contract with the
producer, sales agent or studio, specifying the rights they hold in respect of the title. These normally include the right to release it in UK
cinemas and promote it in all media before and during its release 2) As distributors review what kind of film they have, they will begin to
form assumptions as to the type of release they need 3) As early as possible, the distributor views the finished film and confirms
the release plan
The distributors’ role is to :
● Identify its audience
● Estimate the potential revenue across each format of its release
● Consider why people would want to go and see the film, what makes the film attractive
● Persuading exhibitors (cinema operators) to play the film
● Developing plans and partnerships to build awareness of and interest in the film
● Aiming to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits

of North America, operating offices in more than 30 countries and releasing films in over 120 international territories, either directly to

division is responsible for the sales, marketing and distribution of home entertainment content on behalf of Paramount

3. Our film in comparison with the type of films distributed by other
companies
Jason Bourne was distributed by Universal Pictures. The storyline of Jason Bourne is as follows, a man is found floating in
the Mediterranean Sea with two gunshot wounds at his back and a device with the number of a Swiss safe deposit box
embedded in his hip. Upon reaching shore, the man assumes the name Jason Bourne after finding a passport under the
name in the safe deposit box, along with other international passports, large amounts of assorted currencies, and a gun. He
subsequently attempts to discover his true identity while countering attempts on his life by CIA assassins, eventually
realizing that he is one such assassin who failed to complete his most recent mission. Bourne breaks his connections to the
CIA and unites with a woman who helped him learn about his most recent actions prior to his memory loss. Bourne's conflict
with the CIA reaches a climax when he takes the fight to their doorstep. This storyline is along the lines of our film “Masked
Madness” which also involves a chase which is ongoing throughout the film.
4. Does our film only appeal to UK audiences only? Does it have a wider
appeal?
Our film doesn’t apply to just UK audiences however it is most suitable to UK audiences. A film achieves
maximum success when its audience for the specified film shows that they are enjoying watching the film
in a variety of ways. Therefore if a member of the UK was to watch this film, it would be more relatable to
him and be more applied as he would understand the issues in some modern societies/unprivileged areas
in the UK. However if someone from another country such as America were to watch our film, they would
not find it as relatable however they would still be intrigued to find out the cultures of British gangs and
how it is similar/different to American gangs. For example, Straight Outta Compton is an American film
relating to gang crimes and a group of teenagers who get out of “the hood” through music. The same thing
applies, if an English person were to watch this film, they would not be able to connect, however they
would be interested to gain an understanding of American culture.
5. Possible marketing strategies, release strategies and exhibition options
Step 1- Define target market audience
Find out who would be interested in watching your film, then you know how to advertise/promote your film so that it fits in
with the customers needs e.g. If the target audience are mainly teenagers, then instead of promoting the film at film
exhibitions, release trailers of it and post about it on social media as most teenagers familiarise themselves with posted
content on social media meaning they will directly access information about the film. Also by connecting with organisations
which are associated with your target audience to maximise exposure of the film.
Also find out what will motivate people to come out for your film, also by making the live event/theatrical screening unique
and different to others so that is event worthy and people will go home excited about the movie, they will be influenced to
tell their friends and create publicity for the film attracting new possible customers. Also by creating unique merchandise
especially for the film as people still enjoy purchasing things so they have a DVD copy instead of a PC copy which can be
deleted accidentally.
6. Self distribution
Self distribution is when you can get your film played on online marketplaces such as Amazon, iTunes,
Netflix etc. This means that you are gaining a larger market share as your film is branching out to more
people meaning more people will view your film and you will gain money every time your film is played on
a website such as these. Also, creating a movie website and refining it so that the buy now button is the
biggest and most eye catching on the page will mean customers will see it and based on the trailer and
film information (reviews etc.) they will buy it allowing the company to receive more income. Finally, if you
direct your target audience to your website this will help sales as they are more likely to purchase this film
in comparison with a random person as the target market person will want to see the film.
