Snake
• Denotation
A limbless, scaly, cold
blooded reptile.
• Connotation
Untrustworthy, cold hearted,
vicious, threatening.
Flag
• Denotation
a piece of cloth used as the
symbol or emblem of a
country.
• Connotation
Home, power, safety,
honour.
Gun
• Denotation
A metal weapon that fires
bullets and shells.
• Connotation
Danger, threat, destruction
and violence.
The dark colours make the audience think of evil, villains, and crime. The
word Riverdale written in as bright blue colour can make the audience
think that the town is pure and good, however the dark colours give the
impression that something dark and horrible has happened in the town.
The props of a dark forest makes the audience feel nervous and
apprehensive.
The colours and look of the character on the front cover of dare devil makes the
audience think that the character is a villain. However he isn’t. the colours red have the
connotations of blood, evil, or love. The dark buildings can give an evil feeling to the
audience. However the slight glimmer of blue sky can give the impression of purity,
good and peace.
The colours on the cover of this series can give
mixed signals. Because the nun is the colour
white which has the connotations of purity,
peace, kindness, clean and gentile but the black
blood coming from the eyes can make you think
that the nun is evil. The white background
makes us focus more on the character than the
background. The character starts with being
pure, good and innocent but the turns dark. The
black blood coming from the eyes symbolises
that darkness.
Soundtrack
• Clip 1
Clip one makes the audience think of evil,
darkness and gives them the impression
that something bad is going to happen.
• Clip 2
Clip two can give the impression that
something good is happening as if they
are falling in love, they have found
something good or relieving or that they
have done a good thing. It has the
connotations of happiness.
Shining
• This version of the shinning makes the
audience feel happy because the boy has
found a dad. The trailer makes the dad come
across as miserable before he meets the boy,
then when they meet he becomes happy and
shows the good in him. The music also makes
the audience feel happy because the music is
upbeat.
Scary Mary
• At the start of the trailer the darkness of the
compass makes us instantly nervous. Also a lot
of close ups can give us the impression that
something bad will happen or that the
character is evil. The music also gives a bad
impression on the audience because its dark
and mysterious.
Stereotypes
Men
The stereotypes we
associate with men are:
that men are slobs,
they are all sport fans
and football mad, that
men are clueless about
fashion and that they
are all the same.
Women
The stereotypes we
associate with women
are: women love shoes
and handbags, women
are hard to please,
women are bad drivers,
and that women have to
always wear hair and
makeup.
Stereotypes
Upper Class
The stereotypes we
associate towards upper
class people: that they
are judgemental towards
people that aren't as
wealthy, that they can be
snobby, that they care a
lot about how they look
to other people.
Working Class
The stereotypes
associated towards
working class people are:
that they live in rundown
areas, they don’t have
good careers, they don’t
have a lot of money, they
dress poorly, they cant
eat fancy meals and that
they don’t have luxury.
Stereotypes
Old People
The stereotypes for old
people are: all they do
is go to bingo, do word
searches, go for
afternoon tea, wear
broaches and go to
church.
Young People
The stereotypes we
associate with young
people are: they are loud
and disrespectful, they
dress inappropriately,
listen to loud music in
public, they drink, do
drugs and commit crimes
such as robbery.
Iconography- Western
• We expect lots of certain props in western
films or shows. We expect there to be men on
horses, men in cowboy hats, cowboys, women
in corset frocks, guns, old pubs, tumble weed
and generally set in old farm towns or deserts.
Iconography- Sci-Fi
In sci-fi films the public usually expect anything
to do with space. For example: spaceships,
planets, aliens, unusual weapons such us light
savours, the galaxy, an evil leader and a good
leader.
Iconography- Fantasy
• In fantasy films and series everyone seems to
expect there to be fairies, magic and miracles.
Fantasy films are mainly fiction so objects and
characters that aren’t real. Such as unicorns,
elves, lepricorns, dragons etc.
Narrative
• Narrative Definition
A spoken or written account of connected events: a story.
• Linear Narrative Definition
Presents stories in a logical manner by telling what happens from one point in time to
the next by using flash backs and then returning to the present.
• Linear Narrative Film Example
The series once upon a time.
• Non-Linear Narrative Definition
Which the author has chosen to jump around in time and events are not in order.
• Non-Linear Narrative Film Example
For example the ending of the film could be at the start then they go to present day.
Clip Analysis
• The costume for dalf fader was dark and very
secretive which gives the impression that he is
evil. The lighting when dalf fader came onto
the scene suddenly went dark and he was very
much in the spot light, the camera work was
low to make him look big and powerful. The
colours are dark around dalf fader because he
is evil and secretive.

It has the connotations of happiness.
  • 9. Shining • This version of the shinning makes the audience feel happy because the boy has found a dad. The trailer makes the dad come across as miserable before he meets the boy, then when they meet he becomes happy and shows the good in him. The music also makes the audience feel happy because the music is upbeat.
  • 10. Scary Mary • At the start of the trailer the darkness of the compass makes us instantly nervous. • 18. Clip Analysis • The costume for dalf fader was dark and very secretive which gives the impression that he is evil. The lighting when dalf fader came onto the scene suddenly went dark and he was very much in the spot light, the camera work was low to make him look big and powerful. The colours are dark around dalf fader because he is evil and secretive.
