3. Magazine
Conventions
• Colour scheme
The colour scheme of this magazine is bold, dramatic and
stands out very well to the crowd. The use of bright colours
makes the magazine stand out from the rest, as the colours
contrast each other, and catches the eye of a potential
customer within the target audience.
• Main Headline
The main headline has the biggest font on the magazine
cover. The main headline is what needs to stand out the
most as it attracts the customer the most. The word
“DOOMED” is a very powerful adjective. This can have a very
powerful effect on the audience as it is very ominous and
will bring attention to itself.
• Slogan
The slogan is very specific to what the magazine aims to
cover and provide to its audience. In this example we can see
that the slogan is highly specific as to when the magazine is
published and what it contains which makes the audience
aware of what the magazine is about and how frequently it is
published.
4. Poster
Colours: Use of primary colours to
show a characters’ meaning in the
soap. Red symbolises that danger is to
come and that the character coloured
in red is going to bring conflict into the
play. They are the 2 main themes of
this play. Yellow may symbolise that
the character is not brave or simply a
coward in the play which may bring
problems within the show. Blue may
symbolise that the character is
depressed and has feelings of
melancholy possibly towards someone.
The colour black is used throughout
the whole poster. Black is usually
associated with a negative connotation
of fear and the unknown. It also
represents evil, death, power and
elegance. This may foreshadow that we
may run into characters who will
represent all these factors in the show
which can make the audience feel like
“survivors” (Maslow) as they may want
to know more about the story and its
characters.
Presentation: The direction in which
the characters are facing is opposite to
one another. This may connote that
the conflict is between the characters
shown in the poster, however they all
have different attributes and their
stories affect the main storyboard in
different ways.
Word Emphasis: The word “YOUR”
has been coloured in blue in the
poster. This may mean that the
slogan “Adulthood breaking your
bones” may be targeted at the
character colour in blue which may
foreshadow that there will be
events that include that character
and that she will go through hard
times in the show.
Cross meaning: the slogan and the
tag line “In 2013…life hits you” can
be connected together. This means
that the poster is trying to say that
physically adulthood may affect you
but mentally life can “hit” you
harder which the play is trying to
demonstrate.
