SoapOpera Codes & Conventions continued – Lesson3
Textual Analysis
According to Rebecca Feasey in ‘Masculinity and Popular television’ (2007), the Soap
Opera genre tends to focus on:
“…the home , the family, domestic tribulations and the strong woman, and as such, it
has long been said to appeal to the female viewer”
1) – Do you agree?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8_ApPT6isY (First 5 minutes)
Next Page - YOU MUST deconstruct the opening 5 minutes of a sequence from the
popular ITV Soap Opera Coronation Street (1960 – Present) to identify examples of
where this ideology is presented to the target audience.
YOU SHOULD also try and identify, to demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding of the genre, any Codes & Conventions associated to the Soap Opera
genre.
Home:
The end of a scene where two men enter the house and the scene where Carla is
apologizing for burning down the flat.
Family:
There is an example of family unity within the soap when Jason is showing support
towards his mother and her friend.
There’s also an example of a multi-stranded narrative, which is purely focused on
the loss and break up of family.
Domestic Tribulations:
Carla & Leanne appear to be arguing on the street.
Carla is telling Norris to say what he wants.
Simon accepting the bad news and running towards the others.
Strong Women:
In this soap opera women are always the ones to bring news to other characters.
Carla is telling Roy that they need to leave when he is about to drink from his cup.

The above link will take you to some of the latest episodes of Hollyoaks.
1. What are the connotations of the ident for the popular Channel Four Teen
Soap Opera Hollyoaks (1995 – Present)?
The symbols represent the females and males idents. This could mean that this
show is aimed at both male and female teenagers and young adults as we can see
through the use of blue and pink colour scheme.
Next Page - Hollyoaks – “White Wedding Trailer” -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu2sW-r9Vb4
2. YOU MUST make notes on the following areas when deconstructing this
sequence from Hollyoaks:
Binary opposition of the non-diegetic music
Symbolism of the non-verbal code of the tear
Representation of Pregnancy
Any other examples that would impact the audience
13. 13
Binary opposition of the non-diegetic music
There is evidence of non synchronous sound as the background music contrasts with the
non-verbal code of the colour black, including the voice over saying “White wedding”
Symbolism of the non-verbal code of the tear
Black colour symbolizes destruction and sadness, which can imply that even though the
wedding is meant to be happy in reality it actually appears to be the opposite.
Representation of Pregnancy
At the beginning of the trailer we are shown a close up of her bump, which could mean
that perhaps the only reason why this wedding is happening is because of her pregnancy
which can be seen as a disequilibrium (Todorov)
Any other examples that would impact the audience
Character’s facial expressions illustrate and present their disapproval towards the bride
and the wedding
