Film Poster Color Analysis: Pale Tones Connote Abandonment
1. Film Poster Analysis
Colour is an important feature to this
poster as it is very pale and ‘washed-
out’. The wall behind the main image
looks unpainted giving an abandoned
connotation. The colours within the
font range from black at the top, to
white and then one red coloured text.
In terms of tone, there is lighter tones
at the top of the poster which gives
the hand the main focal point of the
image.
The fonts used at the top of the
image are sans serif and black which
reads ‘based on a true story’ which is
used to add more fear to the
audience as we are more likely to buy
the film is we believe it to be true.
The title of the film has used a broken
glass effect in a sans serif font, which
brings focal attention to this, along
with the red coloured a larger font of
the release date. This is done for
obvious reasons to let the audience
know when it will be released.
The target audience approximately is
young adults due to the sinister
theme and representation of
possession.
This film poster has been taken
from the 2012 film ‘The
possession’. The film is about a
young girl who is shown in the
image who buys a vintage box at a
yard sale and soon discovers there
is an evil ancient spirit which lives
inside there.
The image is a side profile, medium
close-up shot. The image is a young
girl who considering the narrative is
the main character of the story. We
can also infer she is the main target
for the malicious spirit as the hand is
shown to be coming out of her
mouth and holding her head.
The hand juxtaposes against the girl
creating a binary opposition within
this image, of good vs evil, young vs
old. The hand looks very cold, dark
and dirty contrasting with the girl
who looks clean and healthy and
most importantly young which
exemplifies her innocence and
vulnerability within the film. The
image is showing that the ancient
spirit has taken the body of the
young girl which is reinforces with
the line ‘darkness lives inside’.
