2. Teaser Posters
This poster doesn't give away a lot of
information about the film, not even
the title is revealed. The title is not
needed as fans of the franchise will
recognise it is Black Widow from the
iconic logo.
Fans of the franchise will
recognise it as a 'Black
Widow' teaser poster by the
logo and character silhouette.
This poster contains
the production company,
logo, character and film
release date.
The colour scheme is red
and black. The colour red is
attention-grabbing,
especially contrasting the
black background on the
poster.
The colour red has
connotations to intensity
and heightened emotions
such as anger. It is also the
colour of blood, giving
connotations to violence
and danger.
The colour black is
associated with
power, mystery and
strength. It also is a
great shade that
contrasts well with
most colours.
The product overall is aesthetically
appealing. There is contrasting and
complimentary colours throughout, the
bright red against the black makes it eye-
catching. It is also symmetrical and
everything is centred well.
The intention for these posters
was to make the audience aware
that a new film by 'Marvel
Studios' will be released, along
with a release date .
3. Teaser Posters
Just like the poster on the
previous slide, not a lot of
information about the
film is revealed.
This poster is aesthetically
appealing to the
audience. It is perfectly
symmetrical and the
colour scheme gives a
mysterious tone leading
the audience to want to
know more.
The window centred in
the poster appears to be
the focal point of the
product. The light from
the window shines onto
the character, revealing
the colour of their
costume. This indicates to
the audience that this is
the main character or an
important role in the film.
The colour scheme is
mostly black, grey and
white, with orange shades
from the light rays and
red from the characters
costume.
The white and black could have
connotations between good and
bad, with the red possibly
signifying danger.
The poster features the
production company,
release date and main
character.
With franchises as big as the
Marvel franchise, The film title is
not needed on teaser posters
because characters will be
recognised by fans from their
iconic costumes and logos.
4. Main Film Posters
The layout is consistent with the
teaser poster, the logo is centred as
well as the main character and the
film release date is in the same
place/area.
This poster features the movie
title, company logo, release
date, film cast and the main
characters.
Matching the teaser
poster, the colour scheme
is the same. More about
the film is revealed in this
poster than the teaser in
order to build more hype
before the release.
The intention of this, as the main
promotional poster is to promote
the movie right before the release. It is
eye-catching, memorable and stands
out. The movie title is revealed,
production company, credits, actors
casted and movie logo.
In the centre, the main character is shown
with a full body shot. She is looking
towards the camera, and the audience
with a serious expression. She is shown
holding some sort of weapon in each
hand. This hints to the audience that this
is a serious character. Being shown
holding the weapons tells us that she will
most likely be fighting someone or
something.
Any characters featured in the poster are all within the logo and placed behind the main
character. The top half of the logo shows some of the characters in the light so we can
see their faces and possibly recognise some of the actors. The bottom half shows full
body shots of characters but there is darkness cast over them so we can't clearly see their
faces or recognise them. This could symbolise a contrast between good and bad. They
also could possibly be the group that the main character works with, as they appear to be
walking beside her on the poster.
The film title 'Black Widow' is
placed at the bottom centre of
the poster. It is in a white font
which contrasts with the red
and black colour scheme. This
makes it noticeable on the
poster.
5. Main Film Posters
The film title is revealed, as well as the
production company, actors, credits and
release date. we are also shown what the
character looks like in full, whereas on the
teaser poster we were mostly just shown
the silhouette.
For this poster, the layout and colour scheme is
a lot different to the teaser poster. There are
shades of blue, orange/gold. Orange-gold tones
can symbolise wealth and wisdom. However,
they can also have negative connotations such
as danger and aggression. This colour scheme is
also consistent with the characters costume.
The colours are complimentary which, along
with the poster layout, makes the poster
aesthetically appealing for the audience.
Taken from the teaser poster, the window
is now behind the main character. The
character is centre of the poster.
The layout is very symmetrical. It appears
that they have taken an image of a city
and then flipped the images to create this
mirrored kaleidoscope effect.
The title 'Doctor Strange' is at the bottom
centre of the poster, it is in gold coloured
text which contrasts with the blue shades in
the background making it eye-catching. The
release date and the main cast are also in a
similar colour font but slightly darker,
ensuring that the title still stands out most
amongst the poster and text.
Underneath the title is the tagline 'The
Impossibilities are Endless'. Most people
know the phrase as 'the possibilities are
endless'. This phrase adds to the hints of
mystery and magic and is striking to the
audience, leaving them wanting to know
more.
The window in the centre has an
orange ring around it which resembles
a portal. This, along with the
kaleidoscope type pattern made from
images of the city tells the audience
that there will be lots of mystery,
magic and possibly time travel
throughout the film. As an audience
member, I would also expect to see
some trippy visual effects that are
thematic with the poster.
6. Merchandise
The vintage style of
t-shirts and graphic
t-shirts have been
popular recently,
making them more
appealing to a
wider audience as
they are in fashion.
These shirts are in
more of a vintage style.
The actual shirts are in
a plain colour and then
the design is printed in
the mid centre so it is
noticeable.
These t-shirts differ
from the film's posters
and promotions as the
design is in a comic
book style.
It has the title of
the film/character
group written on
the shirt, one
of the t-shirt’s has
the films tagline.
There are also recognisable characters and
character logos from the films. This makes it
appealing for the audience and fans of the
franchise as they have recognisable characters
on merchandise that is presented in a style that
is wearable for every day.
7. The colour scheme is red and grey. The red shades
co-ordinate with the characters powers and
costume. The image of this character is taken from
a character poster that was made previously for the
film.
Merchandise
This is a mug; it
features the one of
the characters from
the promoted film.
However, some sort
of filter or effect has
been put over
the character image
to make them fit of
the comic book style
that a lot of marvel
merchandise is
themed around.
The other side of
the mug reveals the
film title ‘Civil War’
and production
company ‘Marvel’ to
promote the film
that the character
will be appearing in.
8. Magazine Covers
The cover lines are around
the outside of the cover, they
are in bold text and is
coloured white and black.
Both of these magazine
covers are from ‘Empire’
magazine. This means
that both covers have
the same logo, font, etc.
The masthead is the
magazine title. It is enlarged
and centred at the top of
the cover and contrasts
with the background
colours so it stands out.
Both magazines show the characters in front of the empire logo.
The cover lines have words and phrases such as ‘exclusive’,
‘special’ and ‘on set’ to entice the audience and make them want
to purchase the magazine and find out all the exclusive
information that is advertised.
The background of the
black widow cover is red,
with black and white text
surrounding, this follows
the colour scheme of the
film poster and character
logo.
9. Magazine Covers
Empire magazine is about film and tv, their target
audience is between ages 18-40 and are enthusiasts of
the magazine topics. The magazines also have a barcode,
date and price which are conventions that must be
featured on a magazine cover.
The Wandavision cover is
displayed in a similar way to the
poster. The cover promoting
Black Widow has a full body
shot of the main character
centred on the cover. This
keeps the promotion for this
film consistent making it easily
recognisable to the audience.
The cover lines are around
the outside of the cover,
they are in bold text and
are coloured white and
black.
Both magazines show the
characters in front of the
empire logo. The cover lines
have words and phrases such
as ‘exclusive’, ‘special’ and ‘on
set’ to entice the audience and
make them want to purchase
the magazine and find out all
the exclusive information that
is advertised.
10. Research Analysis
What common features do the researched products have?
The t-shirts I analysed had a drawn design on it, referencing the characters in the
style and comic book they originated from. The mug isn't a drawing like the t-shirts,
but a filter layered over an image to make it appear in that cartoon, comic book
style. For the posters, a common theme is that they are always quite symmetrical.
The character is most often centre or near centre of the poster, making them the
main focus. There are also contrasting colours on each of them which makes them
stand out. The film title is always at the bottom centre of the poster, with the
production credits and release date written underneath. The production company
logo is always placed above the film title. The magazine covers follow the codes
and conventions that most magazines follow. Both covers are from 'Empire'
magazine so they have a similar layout and colour scheme.
11. Research Analysis
What aspects of the research will you include within your own work?
In my work, when creating merchandise, I will most likely follow the theme of having
a comic book style design for my products. When designing a t-shirt, I will have it in a
similar graphic style, except with my own design. For my posters, I would like to
follow the style of having good symmetry throughout and having the main character
or characters silhouette central to the poster. I will have a contrasting colour scheme
that will be eye-catching and memorable. The colour scheme will remain consistent
throughout the project, this will help my products become more memorable and
easily recognisable to the audience. My magazine cover will have all the codes and
conventions that are on all magazine covers, this includes a masthead, tagline, cover
lines, cover image, barcode and a consistent colour scheme and layout.
13. Audience research
Observation: 86% of the audience is ages 17-19, 14% are 16 and under.
What this says about my audience: It says that the majority of the audience
ranges from ages 17-19.
How will your product appeal to this audience: My project is promotion for a
superhero film concept, it will appeal to this audience because a large percent of
the age demographic that enjoy superhero films are within the ages 18-29, these
fit in that age bracket.
14. Audience research
Observation: 57% of the audience are male, 43% are female.

and females in this age bracket. The next slide shows that 100% enjoy action and
superhero films which shows that they appeal to both male and female.
How will your product appeal to this audience: 100% of the audience enjoy action
and superhero films, this means that the products I create will appeal to this
audience.
15. Audience research
Observation: 100% of the audience enjoy action/superhero films.
What this says about my audience: It says that the audience aged 17-19 all enjoy

superhero film concept.
16. Audience research

as their favourite. The other two liked films from DC and Warner Bros.
What this says about my audience: This says that the audience enjoys a range of different types
of films in the superhero genre. Film posters and social media ads most commonly persuade
them to watch a film. This promotion may have encouraged them to see the films listed.
How will your product appeal to this audience: A lot of my inspiration for my products have
been from Marvel products, posters, etc. So, this will appeal to the audience as aspects of my
research will be used in my own products, giving them a similar theme to some of these films
listed.
17. Audience research
Observation: 58% watch films via streaming services, 14% prefer at the cinemas,
on DVD or on TV.

watch a film when released on streaming services. This links with how 86% of the
audience don't pay attention to ads because most streaming services are ad-free.

streaming services.
18. Audience research
Observation: 86% don't pay attention to ads, 14% do pay attention.
What this says about my audience: 58% watch films through a streaming service.
These typically don't have many ads as they're a subscription.
How will your product appeal to this audience: The audience said that they are most
likely to want to watch a film from a social media ad or film poster, I am designing
both of these and will make them eye-catching to grab the audience's attention.
19. Audience research
Observation: 57% of the audience would be persuaded to see a film from the posters, 43% would
from social media ads.
What this says about my audience: It says that film posters and social media ads are more likely
to persuade them to see a film rather than a magazine cover or merchandise. The audience age
group is 17-19, this age group can be on social media more than older age gorups, this means
they are more likely to see social media ads.
How will your product appeal to this audience: I will be making film posters in different formats
and also social media ads. These will appeal to my target audience.
20. Audience research

enjoyed the colour scheme, co-ordinated colours and how the main character was centre of the
poster.
What this says about my audience: This shows that they are more drawn to posters that stand
out with contrasting colours. 57% said that film posters would make them want to watch a
certain film.
How will your product appeal to this audience: For my project I will be making a teaser and main
film poster. As well as posters in other formats. I am planning on having my posters follow a
similar theme with a contrasting colour scheme and main character centred.

I love all the action and fight scenes and seeing the heroes with their superpowers.
Q2. What type of ad would most likely persuade you to watch a film? (posters, social media,
magazine cover)
Probably a poster or maybe an ad on social media. I don't usually look at or buy magazines.

Out of the two I prefer the second guardian's poster. It seems more fun and I love how the
colours surround the characters in the middle. The different colours make it stand out more
than the first one, which is darker.
24. Interview 1

They said that they love the action when watching superhero films. Posters and social media ads
draw them to a film. They prefer the second poster as opposed to the first because of all the
bright colours and enjoy other film posters when they are colourful.

I should keep this in mind when designing my product that they hint at action in my film concept
to draw my target audience in.
How will your product appeal to this audience:
I am planning on having bright colours contrast the darker colours in my products. The products
have a space theme so these will contrast well. My character will be the focal point of the

character shown or the actors in the film.
Q4. Out of the two 'Guardians of the Galaxy' posters, which do you prefer and why?
I like the second one best because it stands out more out of the two and I like all the bright
colours and effects.
