2. The dark nature of the background
highlights the effect of the candle
and gives the the audience the
thought of the unknown of
darkness.
The writing is in white and red on the
black background because it
connotes to evil and blood (mainly
the red). The white is used because
it is the opposite of black therefore
giving the harsh feeling of the bold
colours.
The name of the film being shown is
at the bottom under the candle
because the audience will first look
at the face being lit and look at the
name last. This is similar to the film
when the name is shown big and
loud for effect.
The masthead is in capitals with the same colour writing
as the sell lines. It is also in capitals to make a bold
statement. The font has longer letters at each end which
portrays to vampire fangs, another type of horror film
which the magazine would sometimes include.
At the bottom of the magazine
there is a strip of screenshots from
other films that would be included
in the magazine which is set out
like a movie roll. This is well used
to invite other audiences members
to read the magazine even if they
are not a fan of the main film they
are promoting.
The promotional puff is wrote in
yellow writing so that it stands out
from the others colours used. This
attracts the audience’s attentions
towards the puff which is in a
seperate circle from the rest.
The skyline is in a yellow
font (same as the puff) so
that there aren’t too many
different colours to confuse
the audience. Also this
intrigues the audience
because of the exclamation
marks used.
The barcode is on the side at
the side so that it doesn’t take
any attention away from the
cover.
3. The main colour used in this magazine cover is blue.
This connotes to sadness and coldness which matches
the skin tone of the actor on the cover. The background
colour is a shade of grey creating a more in depth an
gloomy atmosphere.
The scowl on the actors
face portrays anger and
gives an uneasy feeling.
This is how we are shown
that it is a horror. Also, how
his body is positioned, for
example his chin is down
while he is looking up. His
hair is also wild, showing he
has important business to
deal with first and more
importantly.
Actors names have been included in the
cover of this magazine as a technique to
get more audience members interested.
They are all written in white whilst the
connectives are in blue; creating status.
This magazine is different to the
first one I have looked at because
it only focuses on the one film with
no secondary images or puff’s.
This could mean that they are very
confident with it and would want
more people to focus on it too.
Although, there is one sell lines
talking about other new films
which are spoke about inside the
magazine. This could be to try and
reach other audience members
who like different genres.
The masthead is sophisticated
and sleek. This means that the
magazine works with many
types of entertainment and
genres within them. For
example, they will not only
promote horror films, they will
have music artists on their
covers some weeks for
example. This will help their
magazine to reach more
audience members as a whole.
There’s is not a barcode in
sight on the magazine
cover, this means it could
be placed on the back. This
would be done so that the
page wouldn’t look too busy
and the main focus would
be on the film.
4. This magazine cover is using a picture of a character who is most likely going to
have the most effect. The facial features will easily show the audience what
genre of magazine it is. This would work well with the character’s hair and blood
stained clothes. Also, how the character doesn’t look like they are mentally
stable an are able to hurt someone.
Each main sell line is written in
capitals to give the same effect
as the image. This being the
shock factor. They are also in
white which connotes to
innocence which children are
usually have, although this child
is different.
The masthead of the magazine
is also in capitals and takes over
the top of the magazine with
nothing else in its space. This
means it is important and wants
to make a statement. It also has
the word ‘cinema’ in it which
contributes to the aspect of it
being a film magazine.
The barcode is in the bottom left hand
corner next to the write writing to
ensure that the main sell lines and
image aren’t taken away from by the
The background is
black at the top but it
covered by the image
at the bottom. This is
done so that it could
be questioned about
where the character
is. Also, having a dark
background makes
the main image have
more of a scary
impact on the
audience members
and make them think
more about the girls
role and character.
This magazine has a main
focus on the one film,
although other films with the
same genre are talked about
in the sell lines to introduce
other similar films. This will
attract a wider range of
audience members and
make the magazine better
known.
There are no promotional
puffs in this magazine
which means they aren’t
focusing on selling
anything but the films
mentioned on the cover
and are trusting the
context they have given
to their audience.
5. My Magazine
In the magazine I produce I am planning to use some of the
main conventions seen in the three just shown. For example:
• Masthead (at the top)
• Dark colours (possible black background)
• Barcode to a side or bottom
• Puff
• Secondary images
Not all three of them used these conventions but I have chose
some of the conventions from each to try and make my own
magazine promoting the horror that I will be making a trailer
for.
