The Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument
A historical context of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument: United States
President, Barack Obama, declared the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument the largest
oceanic reserve system in the world through an expansion in protected territory by a presidential
proclamation on September 25th, 2014. The reserve system originally was formed on January 6th,
2009 by a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush. The ocean ecosystems now under
protection are to the south and west of Hawaii in waters surrounding small islands and reef systems
under the United States jurisdiction (See Figure 1). These areas include, Kingman Reef, Palmyra
Atoll, Howland Island, Baker Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, and Wake Island. The total area
now protected through this reserve system is 782,000 square miles (2,030,000 km2) (Citation). In
these newly protected regions it is now prohibited to fish, hunt, or mine for resources due to these
proclamations. After this expansion, the reserve system will continue to serve as an invaluable area to
monitor the effects of climate change and ocean acidification especially on reef and deep water
systems. The reserve will also serve as a valuable repository for plant, animal, and microbial life for
humans to use for discovery and to aid in restocking depleted resources elsewhere. Many new species
and forms of life still await discovery in these protected waters that will yield advances in technology

The Vietnam War By Nyguyen Thi Vinh
It is my believe that most civil wars are unnecessary and horrible. Civil wars divide families, and can
make friends have to meet on the battlefield as foes. They also ruin innocent lives, and can uproot
people from their homes. Civil wars are terrible, and make even the strongest of people lose faith.
Because of reasons like these three, I believe civil wars should not be fought. One of the greatest
crimes of civils wars is how they can make friends into enemies. The poet Nyguyen Thi Vinh reflects
this in her poems about the Vietnam War. In one she writes about how two friends, who used to play
together, might end up fighting each other. The poem show how friends and even brothers may be
forced to kill each other. Civil wars should not

The Digestive System Of The Human Body
The digestive system is one of the most overlooked systems in the human body. Although most people
cannot sense the system at work like they do when they breathe in air or feel their heart beat, it still
continues to deliver nutrients throughout the systems. The digestion system is responsible for
nourishing the human body with the energy necessary to stay healthy and getting rid of the
unnecessary materials (Marieb 1989). The digestive system is composed of the mouth, pharynx,
esophagus, stomach, small and large and intestine and is aided by the mouth s salivary glands, liver,
pancreas and gallbladder, which are considered the accessory organs (Tortora Derrickson 2014). The
system begins with ingestion, or the act of eating and drinking. Once the food enters the mouth, the
salivary glands begin the increased enzyme production of salivary amylase in order help with the
dissolving of the food and breaking down of polysaccharides into sugars (Tortora Derrickson 2014).
After a bolus has been formed, it is contracted by skeletal muscles from the pharynx to the esophagus
where peristalsis contractions keep moving the mass downward until it enters the stomach. The
stomach begins to prepare the bolus for digestion by a process called propulsion in which the food is
churned and mixed with gastric juices until it becomes chyme, or a liquid substance able to pass
through the pyloric sphincter (Marieb 1989). In the meantime, chemical digestion begins as well;
parietal cells begin

Outsourcing American Jobs Hurt U.s. Economy
Outsourcing American Jobs Hurt U.S. Economy Globalization is the integration of markets through
the cooperation of internalization, federal, and state governments with corporate companies to provide
low cost products. Subsequently, outsourcing is an essential part of this globalization. However, what
exactly is outsourcing? In its broadest sense, outsourcing is simply contracting out functions that had
been done in house a longtime U.S. practice ( Globalization: Threat or Opportunity ). When a U.S.
manufacture product, and buys material from an intermediate supplier from out of the country rather
than producing them in house, that is what is called outsourcing. Also, when U.S. corporation hires
outside contractor out of the country to do U.S. call center services for less labor cost that is
outsourcing. When a company deals out its operational task, such as payroll, accounting, and software
operations that is outsourcing. To get the clear understanding of outsourcing, I have interviewed IKEA
s U.S. Deputy Retail Country Manager Rob Olson about outsourcing Swedish goods. Olson stated that
IKEA s outsourcing utilizes the unique talents of different countries and their labor markets to increase
trade, which helps better allocate resources in their own countries while getting goods cheaper from
others. Today, there are massive numbers of people who think what started as a globalized extension
by sending some work outside, in fact, is creating uncertainties on structural

The Lottery Tradition
Our human history has been dictated by many traditions and rituals. This behavior has made us lose
our morality. The story The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson is a story about a small town. The
towns people most of them farmers lived a simple and quite life. This little town was led by two
people Mr. Graves who is the postmaster and the other is Mr. Summers who runs a coal business.
There is hidden secrets in this little town. Every year the towns people would hold a lottery. Sounds
like a good thing, but winning the lottery only came with misfortune. The lottery was not monetary in
nature. All towns people must partake in this event, the caveat is the winner would be stoned. This was
a tradition that has been passed down from generations of people living in this town. Just like all
traditions, the people have forgotten the significance of this lottery ritual. The only thing they
remember is that the lottery is to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People of this town were unwilling to make any change to the way the lottery was administered. For
example, Mr. Summers had suggested to the townspeople that they should use a new box because the
old one was breaking and getting old, the towns people did not want to hear such suggestion, because
this is the same box that was used by the first settlers. Could be a bad omen if they deviated from
ancestor s designs. Although the box was severely broken down, it symbolized the death of a very
unlucky person every year. Mr. Summers was very adamant about changing the box because the town
was getting too big for the current box. The towns people finally gave in and made the change. They
even allowed women to pick the lottery for her family when in history only men could do so. This
changed happened because a Mr. Dunbar had a broken leg and could not do it for the family. His wife
had to the honors, but the town people were furious because they did not want to break

A Research Study On The Frisian Language
For my research, I conducted an analysis of the Frisian language. Frisian is a part of the Proto Indo
European language family, specifically the Germanic branch in the Western Germanic tradition.
Frisian developed in the Western Germanic family and then it grew and changed from Old Frisian into
Modern Frisian. Frisian, unlike English, has no intervening steps between Old Frisian and Modern
Frisian: e.g. English developed from Old English, to Middle English, to Modern English.
According to classical sources, the Frisians traditionally inhabited the area between the Rhine or
Scheldt in the West and the Ems or Weser in the East. The province of Fryslân (Dutch/English:
Friesland) is one of the twelve provinces of the Royal Kingdom of the ... Show more content on

West Frisian is the largest and most viable of the Frisian speech communities. The most striking fact
about West Frisian, as opposed to East and North Frisian, is its relative uniformity dialectally speaking
(Markey: 2011).
It is in the realm of phonology that West Frisian evinces the greatest evolution from that of Old
Frisian. The morphology, while further simplified in directions foreshadowed even in Classical Old
Frisian, is not radically changed. In the literature it is quite generally assumed that Old Frisian is an
SOV language, i.e. a language with a subject (S) complement (O) verb (V) order in simplex sentence
structure. In this observational statement, V refers to non finite verbs essentially, since it is assumed
that these forms are indicative of the basic position of verbs (Studies in West Frisian Grammar: 2010).
According to the same book, it was noted that a number of cases of grammatical influence of Dutch on
Frisian were discussed, especially regarding a morphological example of this influence which is a
change in the system of Frisian diminutive formation. The syntax of the Frisian verbal complex differs
in several ways from the Dutch one. According to Besten and Edmondsen s paper from 1983, Frisian
shares an interesting property with other West Germanic languages in that main verbs are
accompanied by auxiliary verbs and/or modals occur in one cluster in sentence final

Compare And Contrast Young Goodman Brown And The Man In...
Within Nathaniel Hawthorne and Stephen King s short stories Young Goodman Brown and The Man
in the Black Suit , readers follow two protagonists as they have a encounter with the devil. The devil is
presented differently with each of the novels through elements such as appearance, goals and
language. Both protagonists, each who is quite innocent, is affected by these features in some way.
The first element that readers may notice when analyzing each novel is that the devil within both
stories has a unstated yet clear goal, to change the protagonists view and beliefs in a negative way. He,
however does not accomplish this goal within both of the stories. The devil in Hawthorne s very much
so accomplishes his. The protagonist within the story, Goodman Brown, was forever changed after his
encounter with the devil. He became quite bitter and he no longer saw the good within the people of
his community. When walking into his town the following morning after his encounter with the devil,
Goodman acts quite odd. When the minister attempts to bestow a blessing upon Goodman; Goodman
revolts back from the minister as if to avoid an anathema (Hawthorne 8). Also, when noticing that his
fiance saw him and was skipping over to give him a kiss, Goodman looked sternly and sadly into her
face and passed on without a greeting (Hawthorne 9). The devil ruins Goodmans view of people and
the world, thus accomplishing his goal. Unlike Hawthorne s, the devil in Kings story doesn t achieve

How did World War One improve opportunities for women s...
World War One was a time of death, destruction and was in general a conflict of monumental
proportions. However, as the cliché goes, there is a silver lining to every storm cloud. In the case of
the Great War, the silver lining refers to the great leaps forward made in women s empowerment and
involvement in society because of the advent of the war, which forced them into positions previously
never considered by either gender. World War One provided women with the perfect opportunity to
demonstrate to a male dominated society that females were there for more than simply domestic
chores, and this proved to be beneficial for both women and men alike. Women became involved in
the army on the frontlines, were nurses and medical aids, played ... Show more content on

As women were finally recognised for their contributions as nurses and medical aids, they were
provided with a sense of importance and their position in society was elevated. Without the women
who courageously partook in these organisations, the casualty rates would have been much higher, so
the services that these women provided were undeniably invaluable. Because women played such an
instrumental role in World War 1, the war became a time when women s roles that were previously
thought to be mundane were finally acknowledged and respected, bringing a whole new level to
women s empowerment. Although women were actively participating in the military itself, their
involvement in the civilian workforce was just as equality asserting and significant, especially when
women began to take on roles such as running their countries transport systems. During the advent of
war, the need for transport increased exponentially, as supplies, personnel, and other war related
equipment were in higher demand. With the men enlisted in the army, there was no choice but for the
women to take over these professions, including working on the rail and tram lines and driving trucks,
cranes, cars, and motorbikes for the war. Women found this thrilling (Goldstein), as this was an
experience that none had encountered before and was a far

Duadi Azibo White American Psychology
Psychology can be defined as the study of the mind and behavior. Each individual thinks differently
and have different beliefs. Also, everyone has a different personality. Therefore, everyone cannot have
the same treatment. Reading the statement by Duadi Azibo, I agree with the statement White
American psychology may not always be wholly relevant or applicable in the analysis or treatment of
Blacks or African Americans. There has been discrimination between White Americans and African
Americans, so it would be immoral to use white psychology for the treatment of Blacks or African
Americans. To treat a person of color, one must first understand the struggles that African Americans
once faced. White Americans and Blacks or African Americans

Essay On Honest And Dark Realism In Eugene ONeil
The work of playwright Eugene O Neil involves an honest and dark realism that takes the form of a
tragedy in almost all of his work. It creates a universal appeal to his work with the collapse of his
characters into misfortune through causes that lie within them, but unstoppable to do the outside
forces of their world. It s the idea that the world is bound by a fate, which is stronger than our own
will. In his work Long Day s Journey into Night Mary says, None of us can help the things life has
done to us. They re done before you realize it, and once they re done they make you do other things
until at last everything comes between you an what you d like to be, and you ve lost your true self
forever. Mary exemplifies the very core of O Neil s work in this quote that the men and women of his
world are victims of a cosmic trap, fated to them before they even knew. O Neil s work follows the
attitude that Mary has presented in the fact that his characters are fated to fail, because in their failure
is where dramatic realism is found.
While in other works we watch the turning point where fate has wielded it s hand to do as it pleases,
In The Iceman Cometh the point has come and gone for the characters before the play has even had its
first word read. The characters of the play embody a group of individuals recognizable even in today s
world; they represent the lost and the damned. Before the play has even started we find that each
character has already failed in their own way,

The Phases from One Heartbeat to the Next Essay
The cardiac events that take place from the beginning of the heart beat to the beginning of the next one
are called as the Cardiac Cycle. There are three main phases in the cycle that we will discuss below:
1. Ventricular filling: Mid to late Diastole:
During the diastole phase, the atria and ventricles are relaxed and therefore the atrioventricular valves
are open, the ventricles are the primary pumps of the heart, therefor the term diastole typically refers
to the relaxation of the ventricles. Now when the heart is in the state of relaxation and the pressure
within the heart is low, this is when the blood is passively flowing through the atria and in to the
ventricles. De oxygenated blood from the superior and inferior vena cava ... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore rights after ventricular systole occurs the pressure is passed along and start rising in these
arteries. It does not matter how strong the ventricles contract there will always be some blood left in to
the ventricles after contraction. The amount of blood remaining in to the ventricles after contraction is
known as End Systolic volume
3. Isovolumetric Relaxation: Early Diastole:
After ventricular systole phase, the ventricle begins to relax; the pressure in the ventricle begins to
decline. The pressure in the artery is now greater than that in the ventricle. Blood is now closing the
semi lunar valve as it tries to go from the artery into the ventricle preventing backflow. After the aortic
valve closes aortic pressure rises due to back flow known as the dicrotic notch. Although the pressure
in the ventricle is declining, but it is still greater than in the atria so the atrioventricular (AV) valves
are still closed. As the ventricle is relaxing the volume of blood in the ventricle is not changing, so this
stage will continue to do so until the ventricular pressure becomes lower than the atrial pressure and
after that the filling stage starts all over again by opening AV valves.
So when our atria contracts it pushes blood in to the ventricles and there is something that separates
our atrium from our ventricles and it s called atrial ventricular or AV valve, so the AV valves will open
and the atria will

Female Characters Of The Play By William Shakespeare s ...
First impressions of any play or novel are largely gained from its title. In this case, the title also
happens to be the concluding line of the play itself; Tis Pity She s a Whore suggests the play is based
around a woman and her promiscuous actions. This instantly places women in a bad light before the
play even commences suggesting that there was a woman in a shameful situation due to her whore like
actions towards men and how things could have been different if she did not allow her promiscuous
side to take over control. This title makes women appear to be inferior to men as if this would not
have happened to a man as they would never have found themselves in a situation such as this woman
has found herself in. There are a vast variety of female characters in the play with many diverse
personality types. Ford writes most of the female characters to be weak and inferior to men to fit with
the Victorian audiences idea of how women were to be perceived powerless and at the mercy of men .
There are also certain female characters such as Putana and Hippolita who appear to go against the
stereotypical idea of how women should act and behave during the Victorian era, these characters
would have been extremely shocking for a 19th century audience. At the end of the play all of the
women die nasty deaths and in all situations are due to their actions that surround men. They all die or
are murdered for different reasons but in all circumstances involve being misunderstood

Summary Of The Interlopers And The Machine That Won The War
The Interlopers and The Machine That Won the War are two short stories that have many differences,
but have a few similarities as well. The Interlopers is a short tale depicting a feud between two young
men, Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. Georg believes that the land currently under Ulrich s
name actually belongs to him, therefore steals game from Ulrich s land just to spite him (Saki 82 83).
After confronting each other, it is made clear that they both wish to take the other s life (83).
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree, causing it to pin both men to the ground (84). The
Machine That Won the War portrays the story of three men,
Lamar Swift, John Henderson, and Max Jablonsky, who are discussing Earth s victory in the war
against the planet Deneb (Asimov 1). Everyone believes that an ingenious computer called
Multivac won the war, until Henderson, Jablonsky, and Swift admit that they didn t trust the
information and changed it until they thought it appeared to be accurate (1 4). Differences in these
stories include: characters, settings, and wrong doings. A few similarities consist of the reasons for
actions explained in the stories, and what the characters rely on to make decisions and solve problems.
Through showing differences and similarities, it will be made clear that stories like this that seem to
have nothing alike can be related.

Population Control in China Essay
Population Control in China
Vigilantes abduct pregnant women on the streets and haul them off, sometimes handcuffed or trussed,
to abortion clinics. [Some] aborted babies cry when they are born (Steven Mosher). This quotation
shows one method how China tries to carry through its population control in a manner which is very
cruel and against human rights. We, Western people, do not understand why China needs a population
control and why this control has to be carried out so harshly.
But why had China to control its population? From 1949 on, Mao Zedong feared war with the United
States or the Soviet Union. China s millions [of people] were the country s primary weapon against
technologically superior enemies. The Chinese population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The desire for sons and the infanticides of girls lead to another problem. Today the imbalance between
men and women is already very high, and will even get higher in the future. For example, in the
Guangxi province 19 out of 24 births were boys (2001). Because of this imbalance men will have a
hard time finding a Chinese woman in the next couple of years.
But how does China try to carry out its one child policy? The techniques to enforce the one child
family are sometimes very cruel and violate human rights. First of all, families need an authorization
to have a baby. That means that when they decide to have a baby, they first have to get an official
authorization to have a child. To learn about unauthorized pregnancies, Chinese officials pay
informants to report them pregnancies of women. These informants can be neighbors, friends, or even
family. This method is comparable to what the East German Stasi did in former times. Chinese people
cannot trust anybody, because they can be reported to the officials. Women are also only allowed to
have children when they are married. Because of this law, China passed another law that says that
women are only allowed to marry with the age of 23. That means that women officially are allowed to
have a child with 23 years. That led to an increase of the average age of first birth from 20.8 years
(1970s) to 23.6 years (1998). Another method to enforce the one child policy is sterilizations. All
women who gave birth to three

John B. Watson s Little Albert Experiment
Little Albert The Little Albert experiment is seen as very unethical now, but in 1920 helped out
psychologist. It was run by John B. Watson and one of his students, Rosalie Rayner. At the John
Hopkins University, Watson and Rayner s goal was to condition certain phobias into a perfectly
normal child. Watson was testing Pavlov s theory on humans, not dogs. They chose a nine month old
baby who they called Albert, or Little Albert. Watson tested Albert with a white rat, a white rabbit, a
monkey, a variety of mask, and burning newspaper. This was the neutral stimulus because he showed
no fear when presented with these objects. Then he was placed on a mattress with a rat. When he
would touch the rat Watson would hit a piece of steel with a hammer. This was the unconditional
stimulus. Albert would roll over and cry, now in fear of the rat. He would later be placed on the
mattress with a rat again, and would try to crawl away as fast as possible. The rat was considered a ...

He began to fear all furry objects. Any sight of a furry object, such as Rayner s fur coat, immediately
caused Albert to cry. It is said that Albert s mother was a wet nurse where Watson was testing him so
when Albert was a little over one year old he and his mother moved. Watson and Rayner were unable
to test their hypothesis on desensitizing little Albert. Still to this day it is unclear who Albert, was. In
2009, an article was published saying that the son of Arvilla Merritte, Douglas Merritte, was Albert.
This may be true, but Douglas suffered from hydrocephalus since birth, and died at six years old.
Documents from Watson s experiment say Albert was healthy. Then in 2014, two researchers claimed
that William Barger was little Albert. Barger passed away in 2007, but his niece whom he was very
close to said that when he was alive he genuinely disliked dogs. Since Watson and Rayner poorly
documented their experiment we may never know who Little Albert

household name by 1917; his vast writing and directing career was just getting started. By the 1930?s,
sound had taken over the silver screen; however, Chaplin refused to ... Show more content on

By this time, Chaplin, a vocally political anti fascist, had expressed his dislike for Germany?s Fuhrer
and had been working on The Great Dictator since 1937 (Cole, 2001). Despite this, Chaplin was
pressured ?either to render the images and message of his film inoffensive to Hitler and Mussolini,
which meant eliminating any anti fascist propaganda element, or else to drop the project altogether?
from the start of his work on the film (Cole, 2001). Until this point in time, the American cinema had
ignored Hitler?s presence and actions, as propaganda films were still slightly looked down upon, due
to their misuse during World War I (Cole, 2001). Perhaps another reason for Chaplin?s public dislike
of Hitler, was that his wife at the time, Paulette Goddard, was herself Jewish (Brownlow Kloft, 2002).
In the film itself, Chaplin shows many events that reflect the reality of late 1930?s Germany including
most prominently the treatment of the Jewish people through representations of anti semitic graffiti
and an event reminiscent of Kristallnacht. In the early scenes of the Jewish ghetto, the windows all
have painted graffiti reading Jew (Sherman, 2002). During the beginning of Jewish persecution in
Germany, it was not uncommon for Nazis and Nazi sympathizers to paint anti semitic texts on to the
windows of Jewish owned shops and homes. Through enormous set pieces, innovative camera work,
and great attention to detail, Chaplin was

The Language Barrier Standing in the Way of Puerto Rican Immigrants
The United States of America is regarded to many foreigners as the land of opportunity . To many
Puerto Ricans that still live on the island they view the mainland as just that. While other Puerto
Ricans can t wait to return to their homeland. Many Puerto Ricans came to the United States because
they believed they would not only find better jobs but a better education than on the island.
Puerto Ricans first started migrating to the United States in the 1860s. Throughout the 1900s Puerto
Ricans were migrating to the United States. After the implementation of Operation Bootstrap in 1947
the influx of Puerto Ricans rose dramatically. Because so many Puerto ... Show more content on

Since 1898 language has become a central issue in the Puerto Rican educational system. In the 1930s
the US demanded that English be the official language to be taught in schools. This was very hard for
people to get used to because most of the people on the island spoke Spanish. Because this was such a
drastic change for many there was a lot of objection to this law. Therefore soon English became the
second language. In 1991 the Puerto Rican legislature promoted a bill that stated that Spanish would
be the official language. Although later this bill was modified and in 93 both languages gained equal
status. Today Spanish is the official language that classes are conducted in. In contrast the United
States teaches classes in English.
The language barrier appears to be the biggest problem between the schools in the States and
education on the island. The schooling in the States compared to that of Puerto Rico s is substantially
better. This is why some Puerto Ricans believe that if they are educated in the United States that they
will be able to attain a better job and be smarter too. William Perez believed that he received a better
education although when he returned to Puerto Rico people treated him differently. We were a lot
more prepared than the islanders in the class. We were ostracized. They didn t seem to take life as
seriously as we did. We were more English dominant..We acted different. I guess they thought we

The And Its Effects On Indigenous People
Bioprospecting is aimed to make humans rich, not to conserve forests (Onaga 2001). Even though the
Convention on Biological Diversity called for more benefit sharing, in most cases bioprospecting
agreements cannot be enforced by source countries, communities, or the convention (Sandhu 3,4).
This makes biopiracy common, since the country that makes a successful commercial product is likely
to want to protect their intellectual property rights and neglect indigenous contributions (Cluis 1). A
local curing plant that was once a free commodity to indigenous people, is now a marketed one that
becomes unaffordable for the ones that discovered its value and used it before anyone else (Cluis 1).
In 1969, a fungus containing cyclosporin was collected in Norway and brought to Switzerland for
screening (Dhillion et al. 492). It happened to be an immunosuppressant that could treat patients with
organ transplantations. This discovery was before the Convention on Biological Diversity, so Norway
got no credit. However, if they would have received a mere 2% royalty from the profit, they would
have gained $24.3 million in 1997 alone, proving the incredible economic potential bioprospecting has
(Dhillion et al. 492). Bioprospecting can also harm the environment, the National Cancer Institute
(NCI) has been criticized for devastating populations of Maytenus Buchananii, a native Kenyan
species with medicinal uses (Dhillion et al. 492). Lack of legal framework and indigenous

Regulatory Rule Governing Indian Power Sector
REGULATORY REGIME GOVERNING INDIAN POWER SECTOR
Independence of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission has continued indefinable in reality.
Scopes to restoration the current regulatory structure may be discovered with the aim to keep the State
government at arm s length from the tariff setting application. It is necessary that the current
controlled structure of the distribution sector be transformed and competition be stimulated. One of
the ways to obvious this is to distinct posture and gratified businesses of the distribution segment.
Regulatory commissions should alert the consumers about the rationale of tariff setting and notify
them before every tariff amendment. Every concerned investor should admit the economic
significance at a national level of the present crisis. Political will of the governments (i.e., State and
Central) is vital to overwhelmed many of the challenges.
Discoms in many States are earning massive losses due to increasing, unimpeded regulatory assets. It
is essential that the States explore ways to settle them in a time bound manner without further
postponement. The regulatory commissions need to plan ways to keep the State governments at arm s
length from the State utilities. The governments should effort to attract greater contribution of private
discoms.
The Electricity Act, 2003 defines the duty of a distribution licensee to produce and maintain an
efficient, synchronized and economical distribution system in his area to supply. It also

Pearl Hart s Accomplishments
Pearl Hart, one of the baddest of the bad west outlaws in the 1800 s. She was originally born as Pearl
Taylor of French descendant in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada. She was known as the Bandit Queen, as
some would call her, and she was known as one of the only American female stagecoach robbers, who
was very fast and skilled. She was born in the year 1876, and passed away in 1956. Pearl was one of
many children and received an exceptional education due to being in a respectable middle class
family. At the young age of 17, she fell in love for an attractive gambler, named Frederick Hart. She
soon eloped with Hart, who sometimes worked as a bartender, but more often lost his money from
gambling. Hart was also a heavy drinker and sometimes abusive ... Show more content on

Axolotl Research Paper
An axolotl is a species of amphibian that is found in the higher altitude lakes of Mexico and South
America, but is now more commonly found in a fish tank in a local household anywhere in the world.
Axolotls are Carnivorous, which means that they eat other animals: they mainly feed on insects,
worms, and mollusks like mussels, clams, and cockles. Axolotls can be closely related to the tiger
salamander. The only difference between them though, is that the axolotl keeps its tadpole tail for its
whole life. The feather like headpiece around the axolotls head is actually gills, which allows the
axolotl to breathe underwater. Axolotls can also regenerate and regrow limbs that have been damaged
or removed. An axolotl s life span is up to 25 years,

Young Women And Sexual Relationships
Young Women and Abuse in Relationships During the week on victim blaming, we studied women in
abusive relationships which is a topic close to my heart. I selected the topic of young women in
abusive marriages or marriage like relationships to see how and why women in abusive relationships
cope. In the peer reviewed, scholarly article entitled, Young Woman s Experience of Coping with
Violence in Intimate Relationships by Marina Ursa and Corinne Koehn, young women s coping
mechanisms were analyzed and assessed against past research. Marina Ursa and Corinne Koehn
analyzed interviews of five women ages 19 24, because this age group is the most common to
experience abuse. Their goal was finding the differences and similarities in the decisions made in
coping with abusive relationships before the women left their abusers. Numerous women have
reported self soothing such as cheating on their abusers, substance abuse, and self harm as their coping
mechanisms. Another common theme between prior research and this study is rationalizing the
negative experiences and enjoying the positive experiences. Some woman s rationale was having a
home to live in and financial support which is another topic we learned about in this unit. A key factor
found was personal or spiritual beliefs such as God would never give them more than they could
handle and karma would sort everything out. Similarly to what we learned in class, Marina Ursa and
Corinne Koehn discussed how women can be

Conflicts Within A Group And How A Manager Can Bring Up...
Conflicts can happen in everyday life with people and in organizations. Conflicts need to be handled
so that the situation does not escalate further. Most people look at conflicts as a bad situation, but not
all conflicts are bad, some are good, especially when discussing an idea within a group. In an
organization there are times when a conflict may need to happen for an issue to be resolved, but when
this happens the people involved need to look at if this conflict is really necessary to resolve the issue.
How to address conflicts in a group and how a manager can bring up the conflict without making them
worse is what will be discussed next. At many jobs there are projects given that have to be completed
in groups and they re more than likely is going to be people within the group that do not necessarily
agree on how the project should be completed. This can cause a conflict to arise and to resolve this
conflict requires all members of the group to have a say in the resolution. To ensure sufficient
discussion of contentious issues in a work group, I would have one person be in charge of the group.
This person would make sure that everyone had a turn to give their input and I would make it known
to all the group members that what is said cannot be held against the person who says it. When
managers need to bring up unspoken conflicts into the open without making them worse, it may be
best to have a third party present that can ensure that the issue is addressed

Hillary Clinton Speech Analysis
At the fourth U.N. conference, Hillary Clinton gave a powerful speech about women s rights. Hillary
Clinton emphasizes that although women have been given more freedom and rights as the years went
by, it still isn t enough. In her speech, Clinton goes on to say that if women are free from violence,
their families will flourish. If women have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in
society, their families will flourish. And when families flourish, their communities and nations do as
well . Hillary Clinton used appeals to emotions, logic, and ethics to convey to the audience that
women s rights should be normalized and embraced around the world.
Hillary Rodham Clinton has many titles under her belt such as politician , first lady , senator etc. but
no title gives her a bigger sense of pride than being a woman . She believes to be a woman is to be
strength, power, and grace which she exudes with every step she takes. Growing up, Clinton always
dreamed of being a significant figure in the progression of women s rights. Some of the prominent
steps that Clinton took to pave the way for women and children include: becoming an advocate for
kids and families at the Children s Defense Fund, fighting for the Family and Medical Leave Act,
working to increase funding for childcare, and helping to start the National Campaign to End Teen and
Unplanned Pregnancy.

Rights And Responsibilities Of U.s. Citizens
Rights and Responsibilities of U.S. Citizens
Become a citizen of one of the best nations in the world is a privilege that not many people have. I m
talking about the United States of America. If you are an U.S natural born citizen you have rights and
responsibilities that protect you based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution.
People who are in the position to become U.S. citizens gain the same rights, privileges, and
responsibilities of citizenship as natural born American with the only restriction that they can t be
eligible for President of the United States.
The United States Constitution protects the rights of every U.S. citizen from every background,
culture or religion. Here are some of the rights and responsibilities that every citizen should exercise
and respect to ensures that America continues to be a free and prosperous nation.
Before I start describing some of the rights and responsibilities it s important to talk about the
difference between these two. Rights are what protect you as individual in a society, things that the
government has established for good in benefit of the citizens written on the Constitution and
responsibilities is what makes you morally or ethically accountable in society, in other words rights
are given to you from the government as a form of privilege and responsibilities is how you repay or
give in return for those rights given to you.
Freedom to express yourself

Young Goodman Brown Hypocrisy
In the late 1600s, the infamous Salem Witch Trials occurred. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of
hearings and prosecutions of those accused of witchcraft. In Young Goodman Brown, Nathaniel
Hawthorne shows that the Puritans are hypocrites by showing that members of the Puritan community
lie about their beliefs. Young Goodman Brown lives with his wife, Faith, who urges him not to travel
into the forest, but Young Goodman Brown chooses to ignore Faith s advice and continue into the
forest. In the woods, Brown meets with a strange traveler who he later realizes is the devil in disguise
and witnesses him speak to Goody Cloyse as if they are friends. Then, he observes a witch meeting in
which he is shocked to see Goody Cloyse, Faith, and other Puritans attend. The scene suddenly
changes and Brown wakes up in the forest, unsure whether his experience in the forest was a dream or
reality. He loses all hope in the goodness of man and Puritanism and returns ... Show more content on

After his meeting with the strange traveler, Young Goodman Brown begins to see the hypocrisy of the
Puritan community. Almost halfway through the story, Hawthorne portrays Young Goodman Brown s
shock in the discovery that Goody Cloyse is a follower of the devil by saying, That old woman taught
me my catechism! said the young man; and there was a world of meaning in this simple comment
(Hawthorne). Even though Puritan belief states to love your neighbor, the Puritans were very skeptical
of their neighbors. After learning that several individuals, like Goody Cloyse, are hypocrites, Brown
can no longer trust the members of the Puritan community. Puritans accused other Puritans just as
Brown accused his wife over an event that may have just been a dream and lost his religious faith, as
well as his wife, Faith, because of their lack of trust in one

  • 2. The Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument A historical context of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument: United States President, Barack Obama, declared the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument the largest oceanic reserve system in the world through an expansion in protected territory by a presidential proclamation on September 25th, 2014. The reserve system originally was formed on January 6th, 2009 by a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush. The ocean ecosystems now under protection are to the south and west of Hawaii in waters surrounding small islands and reef systems under the United States jurisdiction (See Figure 1). These areas include, Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll, Howland Island, Baker Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, and Wake Island. The total area now protected through this reserve system is 782,000 square miles (2,030,000 km2) (Citation). In these newly protected regions it is now prohibited to fish, hunt, or mine for resources due to these proclamations. After this expansion, the reserve system will continue to serve as an invaluable area to monitor the effects of climate change and ocean acidification especially on reef and deep water systems. The reserve will also serve as a valuable repository for plant, animal, and microbial life for humans to use for discovery and to aid in restocking depleted resources elsewhere. Many new species and forms of life still await discovery in these protected waters that will yield advances in technology and our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Vietnam War By Nyguyen Thi Vinh It is my believe that most civil wars are unnecessary and horrible. Civil wars divide families, and can make friends have to meet on the battlefield as foes. They also ruin innocent lives, and can uproot people from their homes. Civil wars are terrible, and make even the strongest of people lose faith. Because of reasons like these three, I believe civil wars should not be fought. One of the greatest crimes of civils wars is how they can make friends into enemies. The poet Nyguyen Thi Vinh reflects this in her poems about the Vietnam War. In one she writes about how two friends, who used to play together, might end up fighting each other. The poem show how friends and even brothers may be forced to kill each other. • 4. The Digestive System Of The Human Body The digestive system is one of the most overlooked systems in the human body. Although most people cannot sense the system at work like they do when they breathe in air or feel their heart beat, it still continues to deliver nutrients throughout the systems. The digestion system is responsible for nourishing the human body with the energy necessary to stay healthy and getting rid of the unnecessary materials (Marieb 1989). The digestive system is composed of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large and intestine and is aided by the mouth s salivary glands, liver, pancreas and gallbladder, which are considered the accessory organs (Tortora Derrickson 2014). The system begins with ingestion, or the act of eating and drinking. Once the food enters the mouth, the salivary glands begin the increased enzyme production of salivary amylase in order help with the dissolving of the food and breaking down of polysaccharides into sugars (Tortora Derrickson 2014). After a bolus has been formed, it is contracted by skeletal muscles from the pharynx to the esophagus where peristalsis contractions keep moving the mass downward until it enters the stomach. The stomach begins to prepare the bolus for digestion by a process called propulsion in which the food is churned and mixed with gastric juices until it becomes chyme, or a liquid substance able to pass through the pyloric sphincter (Marieb 1989). In the meantime, chemical digestion begins as well; parietal cells begin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Outsourcing American Jobs Hurt U.s. Economy Outsourcing American Jobs Hurt U.S. Economy Globalization is the integration of markets through the cooperation of internalization, federal, and state governments with corporate companies to provide low cost products. Subsequently, outsourcing is an essential part of this globalization. However, what exactly is outsourcing? In its broadest sense, outsourcing is simply contracting out functions that had been done in house a longtime U.S. practice ( Globalization: Threat or Opportunity ). When a U.S. manufacture product, and buys material from an intermediate supplier from out of the country rather than producing them in house, that is what is called outsourcing. Also, when U.S. corporation hires outside contractor out of the country to do U.S. call center services for less labor cost that is outsourcing. When a company deals out its operational task, such as payroll, accounting, and software operations that is outsourcing. To get the clear understanding of outsourcing, I have interviewed IKEA s U.S. Deputy Retail Country Manager Rob Olson about outsourcing Swedish goods. Olson stated that IKEA s outsourcing utilizes the unique talents of different countries and their labor markets to increase trade, which helps better allocate resources in their own countries while getting goods cheaper from others. Today, there are massive numbers of people who think what started as a globalized extension by sending some work outside, in fact, is creating uncertainties on structural ... The story The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson is a story about a small town. The towns people most of them farmers lived a simple and quite life. This little town was led by two people Mr. Graves who is the postmaster and the other is Mr. Summers who runs a coal business. There is hidden secrets in this little town. Every year the towns people would hold a lottery. Sounds like a good thing, but winning the lottery only came with misfortune. The lottery was not monetary in nature. All towns people must partake in this event, the caveat is the winner would be stoned. This was a tradition that has been passed down from generations of people living in this town. Could be a bad omen if they deviated from ancestor s designs. Although the box was severely broken down, it symbolized the death of a very unlucky person every year. Mr. Summers was very adamant about changing the box because the town was getting too big for the current box. The towns people finally gave in and made the change. They even allowed women to pick the lottery for her family when in history only men could do so. This changed happened because a Mr. Dunbar had a broken leg and could not do it for the family. • 8. A Research Study On The Frisian Language For my research, I conducted an analysis of the Frisian language. Frisian is a part of the Proto Indo European language family, specifically the Germanic branch in the Western Germanic tradition. Frisian developed in the Western Germanic family and then it grew and changed from Old Frisian into Modern Frisian. Frisian, unlike English, has no intervening steps between Old Frisian and Modern Frisian: e.g. English developed from Old English, to Middle English, to Modern English. According to classical sources, the Frisians traditionally inhabited the area between the Rhine or Scheldt in the West and the Ems or Weser in the East. The province of Fryslân (Dutch/English: Friesland) is one of the twelve provinces of the Royal Kingdom of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... West Frisian is the largest and most viable of the Frisian speech communities. The most striking fact about West Frisian, as opposed to East and North Frisian, is its relative uniformity dialectally speaking (Markey: 2011). It is in the realm of phonology that West Frisian evinces the greatest evolution from that of Old Frisian. The morphology, while further simplified in directions foreshadowed even in Classical Old Frisian, is not radically changed. In the literature it is quite generally assumed that Old Frisian is an SOV language, i.e. a language with a subject (S) complement (O) verb (V) order in simplex sentence structure. In this observational statement, V refers to non finite verbs essentially, since it is assumed that these forms are indicative of the basic position of verbs (Studies in West Frisian Grammar: 2010). According to the same book, it was noted that a number of cases of grammatical influence of Dutch on Frisian were discussed, especially regarding a morphological example of this influence which is a change in the system of Frisian diminutive formation. The syntax of the Frisian verbal complex differs in several ways from the Dutch one. According to Besten and Edmondsen s paper from 1983, Frisian shares an interesting property with other West Germanic languages in that main verbs are accompanied by auxiliary verbs and/or modals occur in one cluster in sentence final ... • 9. Compare And Contrast Young Goodman Brown And The Man In... Within Nathaniel Hawthorne and Stephen King s short stories Young Goodman Brown and The Man in the Black Suit , readers follow two protagonists as they have a encounter with the devil. The devil is presented differently with each of the novels through elements such as appearance, goals and language. Both protagonists, each who is quite innocent, is affected by these features in some way. The first element that readers may notice when analyzing each novel is that the devil within both stories has a unstated yet clear goal, to change the protagonists view and beliefs in a negative way. He, however does not accomplish this goal within both of the stories. The devil in Hawthorne s very much so accomplishes his. The protagonist within the story, Goodman Brown, was forever changed after his encounter with the devil. He became quite bitter and he no longer saw the good within the people of his community. When walking into his town the following morning after his encounter with the devil, Goodman acts quite odd. When the minister attempts to bestow a blessing upon Goodman; Goodman revolts back from the minister as if to avoid an anathema (Hawthorne 8). Also, when noticing that his fiance saw him and was skipping over to give him a kiss, Goodman looked sternly and sadly into her face and passed on without a greeting (Hawthorne 9). The devil ruins Goodmans view of people and the world, thus accomplishing his goal. Unlike Hawthorne s, the devil in Kings story doesn t achieve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. How did World War One improve opportunities for women s... World War One was a time of death, destruction and was in general a conflict of monumental proportions. However, as the cliché goes, there is a silver lining to every storm cloud. In the case of the Great War, the silver lining refers to the great leaps forward made in women s empowerment and involvement in society because of the advent of the war, which forced them into positions previously never considered by either gender. World War One provided women with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to a male dominated society that females were there for more than simply domestic chores, and this proved to be beneficial for both women and men alike. As women were finally recognised for their contributions as nurses and medical aids, they were provided with a sense of importance and their position in society was elevated. Without the women who courageously partook in these organisations, the casualty rates would have been much higher, so the services that these women provided were undeniably invaluable. Because women played such an instrumental role in World War 1, the war became a time when women s roles that were previously thought to be mundane were finally acknowledged and respected, bringing a whole new level to women s empowerment. Although women were actively participating in the military itself, their involvement in the civilian workforce was just as equality asserting and significant, especially when women began to take on roles such as running their countries transport systems. During the advent of war, the need for transport increased exponentially, as supplies, personnel, and other war related equipment were in higher demand. With the men enlisted in the army, there was no choice but for the women to take over these professions, including working on the rail and tram lines and driving trucks, cranes, cars, and motorbikes for the war. • 13. Essay On Honest And Dark Realism In Eugene ONeil The work of playwright Eugene O Neil involves an honest and dark realism that takes the form of a tragedy in almost all of his work. It creates a universal appeal to his work with the collapse of his characters into misfortune through causes that lie within them, but unstoppable to do the outside forces of their world. It s the idea that the world is bound by a fate, which is stronger than our own will. In his work Long Day s Journey into Night Mary says, None of us can help the things life has done to us. They re done before you realize it, and once they re done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you an what you d like to be, and you ve lost your true self forever. Mary exemplifies the very core of O Neil s work in this quote that the men and women of his world are victims of a cosmic trap, fated to them before they even knew. O Neil s work follows the attitude that Mary has presented in the fact that his characters are fated to fail, because in their failure is where dramatic realism is found. While in other works we watch the turning point where fate has wielded it s hand to do as it pleases, In The Iceman Cometh the point has come and gone for the characters before the play has even had its first word read. The characters of the play embody a group of individuals recognizable even in today s world; they represent the lost and the damned. • 14. The Phases from One Heartbeat to the Next Essay The cardiac events that take place from the beginning of the heart beat to the beginning of the next one are called as the Cardiac Cycle. There are three main phases in the cycle that we will discuss below: 1. Ventricular filling: Mid to late Diastole: During the diastole phase, the atria and ventricles are relaxed and therefore the atrioventricular valves are open, the ventricles are the primary pumps of the heart, therefor the term diastole typically refers to the relaxation of the ventricles. Now when the heart is in the state of relaxation and the pressure within the heart is low, this is when the blood is passively flowing through the atria and in to the ventricles. De oxygenated blood from the superior and inferior vena cava ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore rights after ventricular systole occurs the pressure is passed along and start rising in these arteries. It does not matter how strong the ventricles contract there will always be some blood left in to the ventricles after contraction. The amount of blood remaining in to the ventricles after contraction is known as End Systolic volume 3. Isovolumetric Relaxation: Early Diastole: After ventricular systole phase, the ventricle begins to relax; the pressure in the ventricle begins to decline. The pressure in the artery is now greater than that in the ventricle. Blood is now closing the semi lunar valve as it tries to go from the artery into the ventricle preventing backflow. After the aortic valve closes aortic pressure rises due to back flow known as the dicrotic notch. Although the pressure in the ventricle is declining, but it is still greater than in the atria so the atrioventricular (AV) valves are still closed. As the ventricle is relaxing the volume of blood in the ventricle is not changing, so this stage will continue to do so until the ventricular pressure becomes lower than the atrial pressure and after that the filling stage starts all over again by opening AV valves. So when our atria contracts it pushes blood in to the ventricles and there is something that separates our atrium from our ventricles and it s called atrial ventricular or AV valve, so the AV valves will open and the atria will ... • 16. Female Characters Of The Play By William Shakespeare s ... First impressions of any play or novel are largely gained from its title. In this case, the title also happens to be the concluding line of the play itself; Tis Pity She s a Whore suggests the play is based around a woman and her promiscuous actions. This instantly places women in a bad light before the play even commences suggesting that there was a woman in a shameful situation due to her whore like actions towards men and how things could have been different if she did not allow her promiscuous side to take over control. This title makes women appear to be inferior to men as if this would not have happened to a man as they would never have found themselves in a situation such as this woman has found herself in. There are a vast variety of female characters in the play with many diverse personality types. Ford writes most of the female characters to be weak and inferior to men to fit with the Victorian audiences idea of how women were to be perceived powerless and at the mercy of men . There are also certain female characters such as Putana and Hippolita who appear to go against the stereotypical idea of how women should act and behave during the Victorian era, these characters would have been extremely shocking for a 19th century audience. At the end of the play all of the women die nasty deaths and in all situations are due to their actions that surround men. They all die or are murdered for different reasons but in all circumstances involve being misunderstood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of The Interlopers And The Machine That Won The War The Interlopers and The Machine That Won the War are two short stories that have many differences, but have a few similarities as well. The Interlopers is a short tale depicting a feud between two young men, Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. Georg believes that the land currently under Ulrich s name actually belongs to him, therefore steals game from Ulrich s land just to spite him (Saki 82 83). After confronting each other, it is made clear that they both wish to take the other s life (83). Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree, causing it to pin both men to the ground (84). The Machine That Won the War portrays the story of three men, Lamar Swift, John Henderson, and Max Jablonsky, who are discussing Earth s victory in the war against the planet Deneb (Asimov 1). Everyone believes that an ingenious computer called Multivac won the war, until Henderson, Jablonsky, and Swift admit that they didn t trust the information and changed it until they thought it appeared to be accurate (1 4). Differences in these stories include: characters, settings, and wrong doings. A few similarities consist of the reasons for actions explained in the stories, and what the characters rely on to make decisions and solve problems. [Some] aborted babies cry when they are born (Steven Mosher). This quotation shows one method how China tries to carry through its population control in a manner which is very cruel and against human rights. We, Western people, do not understand why China needs a population control and why this control has to be carried out so harshly. But why had China to control its population? From 1949 on, Mao Zedong feared war with the United States or the Soviet Union. China s millions [of people] were the country s primary weapon against technologically superior enemies. Today the imbalance between men and women is already very high, and will even get higher in the future. For example, in the Guangxi province 19 out of 24 births were boys (2001). Because of this imbalance men will have a hard time finding a Chinese woman in the next couple of years. But how does China try to carry out its one child policy? The techniques to enforce the one child family are sometimes very cruel and violate human rights. First of all, families need an authorization to have a baby. That means that when they decide to have a baby, they first have to get an official authorization to have a child. To learn about unauthorized pregnancies, Chinese officials pay informants to report them pregnancies of women. These informants can be neighbors, friends, or even family. This method is comparable to what the East German Stasi did in former times. Chinese people cannot trust anybody, because they can be reported to the officials. Women are also only allowed to have children when they are married. Because of this law, China passed another law that says that women are only allowed to marry with the age of 23. That means that women officially are allowed to have a child with 23 years. That led to an increase of the average age of first birth from 20.8 years (1970s) to 23.6 years (1998). Another method to enforce the one child policy is sterilizations. All women who gave birth to three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Watson and one of his students, Rosalie Rayner. At the John Hopkins University, Watson and Rayner s goal was to condition certain phobias into a perfectly normal child. Watson was testing Pavlov s theory on humans, not dogs. They chose a nine month old baby who they called Albert, or Little Albert. Watson tested Albert with a white rat, a white rabbit, a monkey, a variety of mask, and burning newspaper. This was the neutral stimulus because he showed no fear when presented with these objects. Then he was placed on a mattress with a rat. When he would touch the rat Watson would hit a piece of steel with a hammer. This was the unconditional stimulus. Albert would roll over and cry, now in fear of the rat. He would later be placed on the mattress with a rat again, and would try to crawl away as fast as possible. The rat was considered a ... Watson and Rayner were unable to test their hypothesis on desensitizing little Albert. Still to this day it is unclear who Albert, was. In 2009, an article was published saying that the son of Arvilla Merritte, Douglas Merritte, was Albert. This may be true, but Douglas suffered from hydrocephalus since birth, and died at six years old. Documents from Watson s experiment say Albert was healthy. Then in 2014, two researchers claimed that William Barger was little Albert. An Exploration of Charlie Chaplin?s Influences, Symbolism, and Use of Sound in The Great Dictator (1940) In the early 1900?s, Charlie Chaplin became one of the most famous filmmakers in American history. By this time, Chaplin, a vocally political anti fascist, had expressed his dislike for Germany?s Fuhrer and had been working on The Great Dictator since 1937 (Cole, 2001). Despite this, Chaplin was pressured ?either to render the images and message of his film inoffensive to Hitler and Mussolini, which meant eliminating any anti fascist propaganda element, or else to drop the project altogether? from the start of his work on the film (Cole, 2001). Until this point in time, the American cinema had ignored Hitler?s presence and actions, as propaganda films were still slightly looked down upon, due to their misuse during World War I (Cole, 2001). Perhaps another reason for Chaplin?s public dislike of Hitler, was that his wife at the time, Paulette Goddard, was herself Jewish (Brownlow Kloft, 2002). In the film itself, Chaplin shows many events that reflect the reality of late 1930?s Germany including most prominently the treatment of the Jewish people through representations of anti semitic graffiti and an event reminiscent of Kristallnacht. In the early scenes of the Jewish ghetto, the windows all have painted graffiti reading Jew (Sherman, 2002). During the beginning of Jewish persecution in Germany, it was not uncommon for Nazis and Nazi sympathizers to paint anti semitic texts on to the windows of Jewish owned shops and homes. Since 1898 language has become a central issue in the Puerto Rican educational system. In the 1930s the US demanded that English be the official language to be taught in schools. This was very hard for people to get used to because most of the people on the island spoke Spanish. Because this was such a drastic change for many there was a lot of objection to this law. Therefore soon English became the second language. In 1991 the Puerto Rican legislature promoted a bill that stated that Spanish would be the official language. Although later this bill was modified and in 93 both languages gained equal status. Today Spanish is the official language that classes are conducted in. In contrast the United States teaches classes in English. The language barrier appears to be the biggest problem between the schools in the States and education on the island. • 24. The And Its Effects On Indigenous People Bioprospecting is aimed to make humans rich, not to conserve forests (Onaga 2001). Even though the Convention on Biological Diversity called for more benefit sharing, in most cases bioprospecting agreements cannot be enforced by source countries, communities, or the convention (Sandhu 3,4). This makes biopiracy common, since the country that makes a successful commercial product is likely to want to protect their intellectual property rights and neglect indigenous contributions (Cluis 1). A local curing plant that was once a free commodity to indigenous people, is now a marketed one that becomes unaffordable for the ones that discovered its value and used it before anyone else (Cluis 1). In 1969, a fungus containing cyclosporin was collected in Norway and brought to Switzerland for screening (Dhillion et al. 492). It happened to be an immunosuppressant that could treat patients with organ transplantations. This discovery was before the Convention on Biological Diversity, so Norway got no credit. However, if they would have received a mere 2% royalty from the profit, they would have gained $24.3 million in 1997 alone, proving the incredible economic potential bioprospecting has (Dhillion et al. 492). I selected the topic of young women in abusive marriages or marriage like relationships to see how and why women in abusive relationships cope. In the peer reviewed, scholarly article entitled, Young Woman s Experience of Coping with Violence in Intimate Relationships by Marina Ursa and Corinne Koehn, young women s coping mechanisms were analyzed and assessed against past research. Marina Ursa and Corinne Koehn analyzed interviews of five women ages 19 24, because this age group is the most common to experience abuse. Their goal was finding the differences and similarities in the decisions made in coping with abusive relationships before the women left their abusers. Numerous women have reported self soothing such as cheating on their abusers, substance abuse, and self harm as their coping mechanisms. Another common theme between prior research and this study is rationalizing the negative experiences and enjoying the positive experiences. Some woman s rationale was having a home to live in and financial support which is another topic we learned about in this unit. A key factor found was personal or spiritual beliefs such as God would never give them more than they could handle and karma would sort everything out. Similarly to what we learned in class, Marina Ursa and Corinne Koehn discussed how women can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Conflicts Within A Group And How A Manager Can Bring Up... Conflicts can happen in everyday life with people and in organizations. Conflicts need to be handled so that the situation does not escalate further. Most people look at conflicts as a bad situation, but not all conflicts are bad, some are good, especially when discussing an idea within a group. In an organization there are times when a conflict may need to happen for an issue to be resolved, but when this happens the people involved need to look at if this conflict is really necessary to resolve the issue. How to address conflicts in a group and how a manager can bring up the conflict without making them worse is what will be discussed next. At many jobs there are projects given that have to be completed in groups and they re more than likely is going to be people within the group that do not necessarily agree on how the project should be completed. This can cause a conflict to arise and to resolve this conflict requires all members of the group to have a say in the resolution. To ensure sufficient discussion of contentious issues in a work group, I would have one person be in charge of the group. This person would make sure that everyone had a turn to give their input and I would make it known to all the group members that what is said cannot be held against the person who says it. When managers need to bring up unspoken conflicts into the open without making them worse, it may be best to have a third party present that can ensure that the issue is addressed ... Hillary Clinton used appeals to emotions, logic, and ethics to convey to the audience that women s rights should be normalized and embraced around the world.
