Mobile, Global, And Virtual Business Environment
No other industry touches as many technology related business sectors as telecommunications, which,
by definition, encompasses not only the traditional areas of local and long distance telephone service,
but also advanced technology based services including wireless communications, the Internet, fiber
optics and satellites. In today s fast paced mobile, global, and virtual business environment means that
business leaders must change their approach to daily operational issues, new business opportunities,
and local, regional, and global uncertainties. Telecom companies must gain a deep understanding of
customer attitudes, behaviors and actions. This is essential to improving customer acquisition and
retention. Verizon focuses on customer service and customer value while driving their future growth.
Verizon is not just another wireless provider they are also offer business solutions via their wireline
business. Wireline handles Small Business, Medium Enterprise, and Government customers. This side
serves as providers from your neighborhood restaurant to IBM to the federal government. These
services include managed security, television, voice and data, internet, and cloud services resulting in
over $16 billion in revenue in 2015 ( Verizon Annual Report Downloads 2015, 2016). Verizon is
considering three customer growth strategies that increase business to business (B2B) relations and
increase revenue. (1) Migrate from legacy systems to new created platform. (2) Growing

Soon afterwards, UPS disbursed packages nationwide and began to increase their international
services (Rodrigue, n.d.).
Today, the world headquarters for UPS is currently located in Atlanta, Ga. UPS transport for and
delivers to more than 9.4 million customers in 220 countries daily (UPS, 2014). In 2013, the company
delivered over 4.3 billion packages and documents around the world (UPS, 2014). As the package
distribution industry become more competitive, UPS uses cutting edge technology, access to global
resources, and an integrated network of physical, technological, and human assets to maintain their
competitive advantage over other delivery companies (Company History). This competitive advantage
helps UPS continue to receive new and repeat customers and help grow their business.
Globalization of UPS
UPS did not venture their business outside the United States until the mid 1970s. Canada and
Germany were two of first locations UPS decided to expand their business (Rodrigue, n.d.). There
were several cultural and logistical challenges that UPS faced when embarking on the expansion of
their company into Germany. However, they maintained their core values and operating principles of
UPS. Globalization wasn t very profitable in the beginning of this expansion but UPS stay the course

The Global Ascent Of The Nation State Essay
Those born after 1980 may take for granted the fact that the world is made up of about 200 nation
states, which appear to be more or less equal in terms of the legitimacy of their nationhood. However,
history suggests that not all nation states are created in quite the same way. According to Wimmer and
Feinstein: the global ascent of the nation state over the pass 200 years was a discontinuous process,
unfolding in various waves linked to the break up of large empires. By comparing the creation of
nation states in the nineteenth century to those of the twentieth century, it is evident that, while the end
result was the same, the means of creating nation states can be quite different. There are many factors
and events which lead up to independence and nation state creation, such as nationalist sentiment,
revolution, war, treaties, and tensions between people and rulers.
Nation states created in the nineteenth century are more akin to what Montserrat Guibernau defines as
nations . Based on Guibernau s definition, nations are groups of people conscious of forming a
community, and they share a common past and culture. Conversely, in the process of creating a nation
state, a group hopes to develop the community after the fact. Nation states may be the result of a treaty
or consolidation of ethnic territories, meaning their histories can be fragmented and incongruent. The
new nation states of the nineteenth century, namely of France and the United States of America, are

Peacock Bass Tech Report
Peacock Bass Tech Report
By Larry Larson
Imagine a 10 megaton hydrogen bomb going off below your giant Woodchopper® topwater plug. The
peacock bass, by nature, is aggressive and its personality is downright belligerent. It is a fish so
powerful that it can destroy tackle, straighten some hooks and tear hardware right out of some
hardwood and hard plastic baits. The fiercest fighting fish in the world may mangle poorly constructed
lures and even break them apart, and then give you the battle of your life.
It is impossible to exaggerate the strike and fight of this colorful gamefish. The larger it gets, in
contradiction to its North American cousins, the better it fights. The fish almost always jumps the
second it is hooked, and after a head shaking leap or two, makes an incredible ... Show more content

Once you ve found the peacock s hangout, there should be others in the area. You can stop and cast in
the same vicinity (middle of that lagoon) and catch plenty of big fish. It s been my experience,
however, that mid size and smaller peacocks generally are not in the middle; they are hiding under
cover along the bank.
An angler and his alert partner can utilize the team approach to catch more peacocks. Whoever is not
fighting the fish should make a quick cast near the battling peacock, and often, he ll hook a second
fish. Peacocks school, and members of that school will often follow a hooked fish right to the boat.
The hangers on will be after the bait or lure hanging from the unfortunate fish s jaw. It s a tactic I ve
used often, successfully.
The lagoons and lakes with a lot of cover in the form of standing timber or giant boulders are prime
places for big peacock. While most look more like little reservoirs, they are natural lakes off rivers.
They offer numerous features such as points and humps which attract peacock bass. They also have
cuts from the river that are likewise

Kost Litigation
I represent Kost Properties and have examined the documents involving Verbena Gardens legal
situation. Six months ago, there was a break in in SouthWest Suites, where Verbena Garden s office
was vandalized and some photos were stolen. This raises the legal issues including breach of contract
and negligence. Kost Properties and I are hopeful that Verbena Gardens is interested in settling this
matter promptly, thereby avoiding litigation. Kost s property, SouthWest suites, is a two tenant
building with an able security system. The building is comprised of two main entry doors a front main
door and a back emergency exit which are locked when security staff is not present. Both tenants have
key cards that allow them into those entries. If a break in were to occur, the security system calls the
security call center and local police are to arrive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

tool, which is no match to the working security system of the suite. Further, the security system was

The Effects of Violent Video Games Essay
Since violent video games, like Mortal Kombat, were created, adolescents who play these games
become more aggressive than before. To me, playing violent video games is unsafe for these people
since they have the negative influence on these people. I believe that researching on that topic would
help us get the sense of what problems to avoid. I wish to know what are the possible effects of violent
video games on adolescents aggression. The independent variable is violent video games, and the
dependent variable is adolescents aggression. My hypothesis is that adolescents who play violent
video games become very aggressive than those who don t. For this essay, I would like to present the
findings from each article that will answer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first three articles basically demonstrates the level of impact of violent video games on. Unsworth
basically shows that playing violent video games more likely affects adolescents to become very
aggressive. The experiment was done on participants by measuring their anger before, during and after
their game play of violent game, Quake II, and having them to fill out the questionnaire that
determines their state of angers. The table categorizes the participants in terms of their change in the
level of aggressiveness throughout the experiment. According to the data, she found that all
participants anger ratings vary; some participants aggressiveness increases and some decreases while
others don t show any change. According to the article, overall, she concludes that: There were three
types of reliable short term reactions in regards to anger following gameplaying: increase, decrease
and no effect. We found that these reactions could be predicted using state and trait variables. A labile
temperament coupled with high state anger at pregame play led to a cathartic effect; a labile
temperament coupled with low state anger at pre game play led to an increase in angry affect; and a
stable temperament led to no change in angry effect following game play (Unsworth, 391) Here, this
author examines the variables that take in account for violent video games

In the winter league, the Cangrejeros was a team made up of many future stars like Willie Mays. That
season Roberto Clemente hit an amazing .344 that season. That team demolished almost every team
they played. They won the Caribbean world series and had many nicknames like Death Row. They are
still considered the best Caribbean team ever created.
In his first season in Canada, he did not play very much. This is true because the Dodgers wanted to
keep him a secret from other teams. They did this by benching him when every he was good. They
had trouble with this because he was a great player, and got benched almost every game. This did not
work because Clemente got benched so many times he wanted to quit. Fortunately for him, the owner
of the Dodgers Branch Rickey resigned and then became the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He then
knowing how good Clemente was, gave him an offer. Clemente then signed the offer and became a
Pittsburgh Pirate. Clemente was in Puerto Rico at the time and admitted to not knowing where
Pittsburgh was. Clemente almost never had been to the U.S. and did not know how many racial
barriers he had to conquer in order to become successful. The press was making fun of him and hated
him just because he was Spanish and African American. Some examples of what the press would do
were that they would make fun of his heavy Latin accent and they quoted him by

The Roman and Achaemenid Empires were two empires of immense power and longevity. Both
empires were able to build and expand their ruling through many things. The Roman Empire and
Achaemenid Empire both created a civilization in which they were both powerful. They were able to
set up and expand their empire but would eventually fall. Technology is always essential in the
expansion of any empire. With Rome, this was no different. The expertise and ability to create roads

With technology, our civilization is consistently expanding and improving. The same traits that these
empires used to grow are the same qualities we see in our society. Building and maintaining roads
help us communicate which others. Finding a way to transport water from primary sources helps
sustain life. Building a strong military helps keep the area secure and safe. Both these empires had
similar reasonings of how they were able to expand to the size they had until they would eventually
fall and become their present day countries. Reference

I. Introduction.
The focus of the project is on the prestige department store women s color facial makeup in the United
States. We conducted our research of this category by magazine, newspaper, Internet, and over the
counter knowledge. During research we found that Lanc #244;me, Estee Lauder, and Clinique were
the top selling prestige facial makeup brands in the United States. Lanc #244;me, is under the wing of
parent company L Oreal, and was founded in 1935. Estee Lauder was founded in 1946 and Estee

Basically, there are three different groups: companies that specialize in luxury products, companies
with prestige department store products, and companies with inexpensive products. The first category
includes companies such as Guerlain, Givenchy and La Prairie. The products in this category are
normally very expensive and are based on the top of the line technology. The second category is
constituted of companies such as Lanc #244;me, Elizabeth Arden, and Helena Rubinstein. The
companies are known for their high quality products and large R D expenditures. The third category
consists of companies such as Cover Girl, Revlon, and Maybelline. The target market for this category
is teenagers with the main focus on fashionable, trendy aspects (i.e. colors and shininess).
The pie chart shown below breaks down the cosmetics sales by division. The focus of our industry
analysis is on the high end products, which result in 26.5% of all cosmetics sales.

According to some analysts, the future growth in the cosmetics industry will come mainly from the
upper class products, especially of those companies that have an attractive well recognized label.

Persuasive Essay On Drug Decriminalization
Just Say No. This phrase was uttered in 1982 by Nancy Reagan, the first lady of the United States, in
response to a schoolgirl s question of what she should do if offered drugs (Weinraub A5). These words
became the slogan for a nationwide substance abuse prevention program that followed the then
recently enacted drug policies intended to discourage the manufacture, sale, and use of illicit drugs in
the United States. These zero tolerance policies carried harsh penalties and strict enforcement for all
drug related offenses. Almost four decades later, these policies are still in effect, as is their focus on
criminalization as a means to reduce the availability and usage of drugs. Their ineffectiveness is
evidenced by the facts that drug use rates have remained steady over the past four decades and
incarceration rates have exponentially rose during that same period. I believe that a new course of
action should be taken, and a bold new drug policy should be enacted. Decriminalization would result
in a substantial decrease of the prison population, relieve the unnecessary burden that has been placed
on our criminal justice system, shift the paradigm from drug enforcement to drug treatment, reduce the
health risk of HIV, AIDS, and heroin related deaths; and provide unprecedented benefits from the
regulation of the manufacturing and sales of substances that are currently illegal.
In order to understand why drugs should be decriminalized in this country, it is important to know

1970s Pop Culture
America during the 1970s was full of change and acceptance of different groups of people and a
variety of cultures. That led to many people trying and experimenting with different ideas, especially
within pop culture. The 1970s had many elements of pop culture that we still experience today. Some
aspects of the 1970s culture are music, television, movies, literature, and trends.
The 70 s brought a large variety of music, including Funk, Hard Rock, and Disco. Some singers,
songwriters, and both include Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, and the Jackson 5. Johnny Cash was born in
Kingsland, Arkansas on February 26, 1932, and grew up to be an American singer and a songwriter.

Due to the many movements in the 70s, such as the Women s Liberation Movement, society was
changing rapidly. Men and women frequently breaking expected social fashion rules was one
example; people started to use their clothes for self expression and women, especially, wore clothing
that reflected their personality and desire for comfort. Another fad of the decade was kung fu and
other Asian martial arts; the trend started due to Bruce Lee s movies Fists of Fury and Enter the
Dragon, which were both made in the early 1970s. From then, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and other
actors of the like became well known, becoming part of the American culture that is still relevant to
today. Finally, another trend was the rage over organic food. Similar to today, consumers back then
were also concerned about what they were eating and wanted to be able to have a diet that was both
beneficial to them and the Earth. Earth friendly farming ways were strongly encouraged while other
ways, such as growth regulators, chemical preservatives, and pesticides, were becoming

Daniel Vs Ezekiel Essay
Ezekiel and Daniel are alike and different in many ways. Yes, both were Major Prophets called by
God. The history we learn about these prophets should teach us many things that we as Christians are
called to know.
Name:
The names Daniel and Ezekiel are similar in the fact that they were both taken from Hebrew and both
are named after their authors. The difference is apparent when we look at the meaning of the names.
Daniel means God is Judge or God is my Judge , whereas Ezekiel means God strengthens or
strengthened by God .
Theme:
There s not much similarity in the themes of these books except that in both books, God s grace is
plainly shown. That is about where the similarities end. From there, Ezekiel s theme is focused on the
condemnation of Israel for their sin. Ezekiel is also a prophecy that the fall of Jerusalem and the
Babylonian captivity are necessary measures for the God of grace to employ if He is to correct his
disobedient people and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference, however, is when we look at how. In Ezekiel, Christ is pictured in parables such as the
tender sprig which is very similar, and thus reminds us, of the Branch from Isaiah 11, Jeremiah 23 and
33, and also many other places throughout scripture. Ezekiel also talks in prophecies when it speaks of
Messiah as the King with the right to rule.
In Daniel, you see Christ in many different aspects. You see Him in the fiery furnace that protected
Daniel s three friends. You see Him also in the lion s den, preserving his servant Daniel. In this book
he is portrayed through a vision as the great stone who will crush the nations of the world, which
points us to the final day when He comes again.
Canonical Significance: The canonical significance of Ezekiel is that the Holy God will be worshipped
again by a remnant. The canonical significance of Daniel is to show God s sovereignty in history and
prophesy.

cases : oblique intention D has a purpose other than causing the prohibited harm but where that result

Evidential interpretation = still no definition of intention where a consequence is foreseen as virtually

Write An Essay About Patsy Mink
She sat at the back of the classroom, rapping the pencil against her teeth. For all her natural grace and
casual elegance, her eyes clearly burned with a fire so fierce it seemed to be growing brighter by the
minute. In short, Patsy Mink was thinking. Thoughts of Hawaiian nights filled her head, the soft
breeze and starry skies as vivid as ever, though what she was concentrating on were the voices in the
background. She had been young in this particular memory, though it was stirring enough to stick with
her. The noise was that of a political rally, with groups of people huddled together to shout and scream
for their favorite candidate. Patsy remembered thinking how important it all seemed, how involved
people had been, and such passion filled her now as a candidate for her high school s student
government. As she thought of that night more deeply, she suddenly found what she had been looking
for: an answer. Coalitions! That s how she would do it. Being a Japanese American, and a woman
nonetheless, would be a difficult obstacle to overcome as a student politician in post Pearl Harbor
America, but if she could appeal personally to specific groups, she might just be able to pull it off. ...

The Old Man And The Sea By Siddhartha Gautama
In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully
you let go of things not meant for you was beautifully said by Siddhartha Gautama and perfectly
emcompasses what his life was truly all about. The life of Gautama can be recognized as remarkable
because when analyzed, it is clear that he created a foundation for himself that not only survived his
own death, but also all of the changing decades that passed thereafter. This foundation was Buddhism
and through this, he created multiple concepts or sermons, as he referred to them, that followed such
as the Eightfold Path and Nirvana. Siddhartha s life is still symbolic of a journey or cycle that ends

He also discovered the Four Noble Truths and they can be simplified to; life is suffering, suffering is
caused by a crave or thirst, satisfaction is enlightenment and the Eightfold Path frees the practicers
from suffering. Thereafter, the great Buddha lived for an estimated total of eighty years in which he
spent travelling and preaching the Dharma, which is the given name to Buddha s teachings that have
been passed down for more than fourteen centuries.
Being that Buddha s entire life from adulthood to end revolved around ending one s suffering, it is
only suitable to speak of the end of suffering; the Eightfold Path. The Eightfold Path is considered to
be the heart of Buddhism and when practiced, it can help humans to see life realistically and without
delusions. The first path is right view and concompasses the Four Noble Truths and the Three Marks
of Existence, which are; Everything is impermanent, suffering is a part of existence and nothing exists
in and of itself, without dependencies (Secular Buddhism). When a person fully understands and
retains the information from the truths and the marks, they then see the world and themselves from a
viewpoint without delusion, hatred or greed. Right intention or the second path says to be mindful of
what one s intentions with others and their actions because intentions that stem from anger, resentment

second most common characteristic. Having abnormal chromosomes does not mean that girls with

Affected females may also exhibit the following symptoms: infertility, kidney abnormalities, thyroid

The Harmful Myth Of Asian Superiority
All Asian Americans are good at math, or at least that s what I heard. They are also good at anything
involving technology, science, and medicine. They study all the time, work really hard and live a
version of the American dream I never thought to dream of. Afterall they re Asian, their parents
wouldn t allow for anything less. In his article The Harmful Myth of Asian Superiority the ethnic
studies expert Ronald Takaki writes about the idea that Asian Americans are more successful than
other American minority groups. Takaki refutes this idea using reason and statistics to show that Asian
Americans still face some of the same hardships and barriers as every other racially defined group in
America. Takaki s word choice allows him manipulate statistics for his purpose of disproving the myth
of model minority. The words Takaki choses to use in his article both strengthen his ethos as an
educated Japanese American writer and weaken his argument against the model minority in terms of
both logos and pathos. The cunning use of words in paragraph ten allows Takaki to raise his reader s
concern for the well being of Asian refugees while remaining rather vague about whether or not the
financial state of said refugees and their families is actually an issue. This paragraph is composed of
only two sentences. In the first sentence Takaki writes that Hmong and Mien refugees from Laos have
unemployment rates that reach as high as 80 percent . Reading Takaki s article as someone who

Is diversity a learning tool? Indeed, a difference of opinion, perspective, and background has been the
cause of some conflict around the world. However, with the proper respect and understanding found in
a classroom environment, it can act as as a success tool for students. In fact, diverse classroom
environment provides multiple academic and social benefits, as it brings unique ideas to work with,

Along with different backgrounds, comes different perspectives, experiences and ideas. When

A classroom with students from different backgrounds is very beneficial as it helps learners
understand and appreciate cultural differences, as they develop responsiveness of their cultural beliefs.
Students are allowed to break social and ethnicity barriers in the classroom, which will ultimately lead
to breaking them in their daily lives. This requires open and honest discussion about difference, and an
institutional respect for people of all backgrounds and abilities. In inclusive schools, the establishment
of such a climate benefits everyone by fostering an environment where students and their families are
valued for who they are. (Inclusive Schools Network). Consequently, being able to understand one
another from different backgrounds will aid in maintaining friendships in the future of this sort, and
resolve any lingering conflict, ultimately benefiting the future.
A diverse classroom provides many advantages such as being exposed to different
experiences/perspectives, which helps develop high order critical thinking skills and promotes
personal growth. These factors can help students excel in the future, and help bring the future
generation unite.Multicultural education is broadly defined, takes many forms and has an impact on

Nuclear Bomb Persuasive Essay
It is an ordinary Monday morning in New York City and you wake up to begin your day. Emergency
alarms suddenly fill the air and you rush outside to see what could possibly be happening. Your
neighbors are packing their cars and fleeing in a panic; you then hurry back inside to watch the news.
The emergency broadcast system appears on the screen and informs you that nuclear missiles have
been launched at the United States one of which is headed to your city. Reality strikes you as you
realize that there is nothing you can do except await the impending death and destruction that is
headed your way. The following was a possible scenario that could happen to a world with nuclear
weapons. The possibility of nuclear war could be eliminated with the disarmament of nuclear
weapons. In 1945, the first nuclear bomb was deployed over Hiroshima, Japan claiming 90,000 lives.
According to Nuclear Darkness , that bomb contained only 15,000 tons of TNT, whereas a modern
day nuclear weapon contains 20,000,000 tons. If a modern day nuclear bomb was deployed, the results
would be catastrophic. According to Nuclear Arsenals , there are approximately 15,000 nuclear
warheads in the world. That equals roughly 300,000,000,000 tons of TNT. In the event of a nuclear
war, life as we know it would cease to exist. The two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In targeting the centers of government, all forms of national leadership would be wiped out. Without
any leadership, there is no one to order missile strikes. That same concept applies to the targeting of
nuclear arsenals because it would destroy that country s nuclear weapons and they would not be
capable of retaliating. Highly populated cities like New York, Moscow, Tokyo, and Dubai would be
targeted because if destroyed, it would cut out a large fraction of Earth s population. The worst part of
a nuclear war however, has sadly yet to

Drug Testing and Legalization of Marijuana
For over a century the legalization of medical marijuana in the United States has been a growing
controversy. Washington and Colorado are the two recent states that have legalized the use of
marijuana for recreational uses. In contrast, others in federal positions believe the use of marijuana has
no beneficial use to it which creates a struggle into its legalization. Marijuana is classified as a
Schedule 1 drug believed to be dangerous and highly addictive, also thought to be a gateway drug
leading to a dark path of drug abuse. Most of these poor assumptions are supported and investigated to
be incorrect by many researchers and first hand users. The strict drug laws around the United States

marijuana has positive medical benefits in a variation of illnesses and has a lower chance for drug

Analysis Of Emily s A Rose For Emily
Love is a morphing entity that devours everyone from conception to death. Love is a beautiful,
disgusting phenomena that allows deep relationships to form between persons or between people and
objects. In A Rose For Emily , Emily experiences a large variety of bittersweet instances of love.
Emily Is shown overbearing love from her father, materialistic love from Tobe, first love from Homer
Barron and curious love from the town. When a person experiences love it s hard to let go of that
person or object. Emily fears to loose love from anyone especially after the sudden loss of her only
love at the time, her father. After Emily s father passed, Emily fears that she can just as easily loose
grasp of any other person whom she grows attached to. Perhaps the traumatic experience or fear of
losing love is enough drive poor Mrs. Emily well into the twisted path of insanity. Emily first
experiences love from the controlling hands of her father. Emily s father solely prevents any young
man from even growing close to his precious daughter. so when she got to be thirty and was still
single , we were not pleased exactly, but vindicated; even with insanity in the family she wouldn t
have turned down all of her chances if they had really materialized . Emily s father knew that no man
could love his daughter as much as he does. Therefore no one was able to date his daughter until his
death. Emily showed no emotion about her father s passing and continually said he was not

The Challenges Of Leadership In The Danielson Framework...
Our professional development sessions are conducted weekly in a variety of subject areas, and the
monthly school wide session, using interactive reform activities, align with the Danielson Framework
for Teaching (Danielson, 2013) to showcase best practices of teachers and to develop grade level
performance tasks, looking at students work to provide individual feedback that is aligned with the
teaching rubric in order to show academic progress and growth in the target areas of ELA and Math.
Distributed Leadership and Social Justice Leadership Theory
The research speaks to the eight symbolic roles of leaders; here the school leader serves as a historian
examining the challenges of the internal and external school culture. Terrence E. Deal and Kent D.
Peterson (1990) stated:
Who school leaders are what they do, attend to, or seem to appreciate is constantly watched by
students, teachers, parents, and members of the community. Their interests and actions send powerful
messages. They signal the values they hold. Above all else, leaders are cultural teachers in the best
sense of the word. (Deal Peterson, 1990, p. 201)
For that reason, the principal and school administrators will be visible and visiting classrooms, making
rounds, and attending and participating in community events. The school leaders will use their voice
to be advocates for the needs of the students, parents, faculty, and staff of HSHS and to showcase
everyone s accomplishments.
Another researcher, John P. Kotter (2006) outlined the Eight Steps to Transforming Your Organization,
which are:
1. Establishing a sense of urgency
2. Forming a powerful guiding coalition
3. Creating a vision
4. Communicating the vision
5. Empowering others to act on the vision
6. Planning for creating short term wins
7. Consolidating improvement and producing still more change
8. Institutionalizing new approaches. (p. 4)
The professional learning community will develop the steps of transforming our schools. It will use
these eight steps as professional development protocols in reducing the dropout rate and increasing
college and career readiness.

The Anatomy And Physiology Of Blood Vessels Essay
Circulation
1. Compare and contrasts the anatomy and physiology of blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries.
Why are these differences significant in the overall function of the circulatory system? Please be
specific.
The arteries are thicker and more elastic because of the fast pumping of blood that leaves the heart to
other organs to the body, as where the veins are small due to the low blood flow because of the slow
movement from the capillaries to the veins not like the forceful pumping from the heart to the arteries
to the rest of the body. The Oxygenated blood goes through the arteries except the pulmonary arteries.
Then Deoxygenated blood goes through the veins except the pulmonary veins. The lumen of the artery
is narrow, were as the lumen of the veins is wider. There are not valves in the arteries, were as the
valves are present in veins. In the arteries, endothelial cells of tunica intima are more long then wider,
and have more elastic membrane that is more developed. Then the Tunica media is more muscular,
and the tunica extrema is not as developed. In veins, the endothelial cells of tunica intima are not as
long and have more elastic membrane then being developed. The Tunica media is less muscular were
the tunica extrema is more developed. Arteries are deep within and the veins are more superficial.
Capillaries are microscopic vessels; they carry blood from the arterioles then go to the small veins or
venules. The wall of the capillary made up of a

The present value of all these cash inflows and outflows can be calculated by discounting them at
12.19%. This rate is calculated by assuming that the purchasing power parity holds in this scenario.
The company can do the feasibility analysis by looking at both from the subsidiary s and parent s
perspective by assuming that the purchasing power parity holds. Hence, this rate can be regarded as
opportunity cost of investment because it is the second best alternative for the company for investment
purposes. So, the NPV can be calculated by taking the sum of present values of all the cash flows.
This NPV comes out to be 3,703,176 Pesos. This NPV value can be converted into Euros by dividing
the NPV value by the spot exchange rate. The spot exchange rate is 15.99 MXN/EURO. Hence, by
dividing 3,703,176 by 15.99, NPV value in terms of Euro comes out to be 231,593 Euros. Compute
the NPV in €s by translating future peso cash flows into €s at expected future spot rates. Note Ariel s €
hurdle rate for this asset class was 8%. Annual inflation rates are expected to be 7% in Mexico and 3%
in France. NPV calculated for this scenario comes out to be 231,507 Euros. The first thing required for
calculating NPV in Euro is the forward premium. It is calculated by adding 1 to the inflation rates of
France and Mexico respectively, and then by taking their ratio. This ratio comes out to be 1.0388. This

The Role Of Algorithmic Media On Audiences And Society
Algorithmic media have a kind of power, however this power largely remains invisible to the audience
or user who instead interact with the information that the algorithm sorts and delivers. Instead where
this power manifests and consolidates is on platforms that draw the attention of audiences and revolve
around the role played by algorithms. Using institutional theory, automodernity, and the concept of
algorithmic publics, we can start to map out a growing and potential field of research that attempts to
measure and explore the growing role and influence of algorithmic media on audiences and therefore
society. Especially when in the form of platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc. Tarleton
Gillespie (2010) is a vocal critic of the evolving relationship between the new media industries and
their audiences, in particular drawing issue with the use of the word platform , arguing that it provides
a false vision of technical neutrality and progressive openness (360) when the reality is quite the
opposite. Rather than regard platforms as a level playing field we should instead regard them as what
they are, slanted towards the interests of the owner, serving specific commercial needs and interests.
Gillespie argues in a later paper (2015) that platforms exercise considerable power in their ability to
make interventions, whether that involves shaping how the platforms are used, or more importantly
deleting content or users of the platform itself. They internalize the

Professional Athlete Salaries Essay
Professional Athlete Salaries
In today s society many will argue whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. In the present
time athletes are being paid phenomenally large amounts of money for their entertainment. It is my
claim that all professional athletes are overpaid because they do not offer society an essential function
that improves or enhances our world in comparison to other professionals such as medical doctors,
lawyers, and teachers. Society does not value entertainment enough to warrant such high salaries such
as those of many professional athletes. There is no reason that these athletes should demand these

In an article from the New York Times Patrick Ewing quotes with the money I m making now I can t
afford to support my family. (E13). This comment is ridiculous; there is no way that a multi
millionaire should have a problem supporting their family. These athletes have to set their priorities
logically and realistically, a person doesn t need a multi million dollar estate they just want one; this is
what angers me. Another aspect that can be touched upon is whether or not they respect the people
who provide their paychecks; those being their fans.
Athletes argue that they are role models for children and endorse products. This is true, but it is what
goes along with the job. I would be prod if I knew that billions and billions of young impressionable
children wanted to be just like me. You should not have to be paid to be a role model, there is no
reason that one should be negative, commit crimes, and do bad things regardless of you being an
athlete or not. It should be an honor to be praised and loved by billions, this is why I feel the reasoning
of the professional athletes that demand higher wages are illegitimate.
The value of entertainment in our society is arguable. We as a society constantly search for new ways
to entertain ourselves; professional sports are a major contribution to our source of entertainment. If
those who support athletes and their sports have no problem paying to see them,

If you don t have an ID for your pet, the start of a New Year is a great time time to invest in a
identification tag for you pet that has their name on it as well as your contact information.
If you pet s identification tag is out of date and contains contact information for you that is no longer
valid, get it updated. That way, if anything every happens to your pet, whomever finds them will be
able to get in touch with you.

#4 Groom Your Pet On A Regular Basis
Finally, make sure that you keep up on your pet s grooming this year.
If you have a dog, sit with it and brush its coat at least once a day. This will only take a few minutes to
do every day and will result in multiple positive benefits. If you brush your dog s coat everyday, more
of their lose fur will end up on their brush instead of around your house. Brushing your dog everyday
should reduce the amount of fur around your house. Additionally, it will help spread the oils on your
dog s skin to their fur, which will help keep their fur looking and feeling healthy. Finally, its a great
way to bond with your dog.
You can also brush your cat as well on a daily basis if they will let you. Many cat s prefer to groom
themselves, but if you start young, your cat should allow you to groom it as well.
Remember grooming extends to your pet s teeth as well. At least once a week, you should brush your
dog or cat s teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for pets. You can also stay on
top of their dental healthy by providing them with treats and chewy toys that are designed to
specifically combat tarter and keep their teeth

acquisition than studying a language in a classroom is. The distinction between subconscious

we acquire subconsciously is language we can easily use in spontaneous conversation because it is

behaviors. Many studies on human nature have been conducted with various results and theories,
given the human mind and conscious is one of the most complex systems in the world. There are
many aspects to the human mind such as moral sense and principles. The intriguing issue of human

Heidegger s alleged water from the fountain of youth is real or not. The extreme exhilaration the four
patients were experiencing could have been all in their heads. Some point to the placebo effect, which
is a measurable, observable improvement of health or behavior not attributable to a medication or
invasive treatment (Carrol). This theorizes that the patients were told they would become young again,
so they believed that the water they were drinking really did make them youthful, even if it had no
physical effect; it was all in their minds. The possibility of the patients being a part of a hoax is
believable, considering that Dr. Heidegger was known for illusions and experiments. Even the
example of the rose being brought back to vitality by the fountain water could ve easily been a trick
performed by a magician. The four guest could ve simply been fooled, given that people behave
differently when they are participating in an experiment than when they are not (Carrol). The common

Ambition is what drove me to not give up. By this point we re all tired from school. We re sick of

where I couldn t sleep. I never came to school, I didn t do any of my work, and I practically failed
everything. I told my guidance counselor at the time that I wanted to drop out because all of it seemed
impossible. Too impossible. How could I make up two years worth of classes in one? I just wanted to

parents proud and I wanted to make myself proud. So I did what I needed to do and pushed myself to

I still wasn t satisfied; I needed to prove it and I wanted my hard work and determination to show it,
so I got ahead. Then people started having doubts. That I couldn t possibly manage it and that I should

Herb Kelleher: An Inspiring Leader
In 2007, Herbert Herb David Kelleher, co founder and former CEO of Southwest Airlines was ranked
#5 on USA Today s 25 Most Influential Business Leaders in large part for his personality, work ethic,
management strategy and genuine concern for his employees. Throughout this paper you will read
about Kelleher from a young child developing a work ethic to a man who came up with a new
business plan most people would of thought of as impossible.
Herbert Kelleher s Childhood and Career

With his brothers and sister going their separate ways and his father passing away, Kelleher became
very close with his mother. The biggest influence in developing Kelleher s work ethic is attributed to
his mother, Ruth Kelleher. Sitting at the dining room table, the two of them would have conversations
all night long discussing business, politics, and ethics (Belden, 2003).
Ruth Kelleher made sure to drive the importance of treating people with respect. She also made sure
to drive the importance of judging on merit rather than appearance (Belden, 2003). Herb Kelleher told
Fortune Magazine that his mother could not have been more correct in what she taught him. He told
Fortune on May 28, 2001:
There was this very dignified gentleman in our neighborhood, the president of a local savings and
loan, who used to stroll along in a very regal way up until he was indicted and convicted of
embezzlement. My mother said that positions and titles signify absolutely nothing. They re just
endorsements; they don t represent the substance of anybody (Benten, 2003).
Herb Kelleher used the advice he received from his mother in his everyday life including life at

William Randolph Hearst s Influence On The Film Citizen Kane
The film Citizen Kane was voted the greatest American film twice by the American Film Institute in
1998 and 2007. It broke new grounds in several areas such as complex sound, deep focus and the
narrative structure. This movie showed the director is the plays the most important role not the
producers, writers or financial investors. William Randolph Hearst the media baron was one of the
individuals that inspired the film. He was offended by the film and tried to destroy it by refusing to
publicize the film through his media outlets but his efforts failed. He provided the model for the film,
he was not the subject or the target but he was the screen. Citizen Kane has influenced many film
directors of today such as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott and Ford Coppola

Narrative Essay About The Fair
I was an uneventful day and the bright morning sun gistered against the morning dew as it shun
through my shiny bedroom window. My bedroom reminds me of a store with endless products and a
theatre with a large television. I am just wealthy. My family is wealthy. I was heading downstairs in
my blue nike bed slippers, hopped off with my favorite sweat pants and extended shirt. I was doing
my regular routine of checking what my wife is cooking for breakfast. Good morning daddy, are we
still going to the fair? Well..... I can t wait to see my friends, I can t wait to see my friends! My little
lovely but annoying daughter Simone is always excited to leave home to meet her friends at at the fair.
Heading towards the kitchen, I could smell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

On our way to the bus stop I came up on the sickening figure, the poor beggar wrapped in ragged
clothes. Beg yaa money nuh. The beggar was a gambler who had lost everything due to his habit. He
could not pay for his bills or mortgage and as a result his house was repossessed. We are very high
minded so we gave him no answer. We decided to take a bus to the fair leaving our Honda in out
garage. We were just in time for the bus. Timberly Sat behind the driver s seat with Simone. On our
way to the fair Timberly and I talked about missing work to go to the fair. Upon arriving at the fair,
my daughter dashed out of the bus to talk to her friends. Timberly and I stepped out of the bus to view
everything that was going on. Simone did not even introduce her friends to us but instead she started
to play with them. There was alot of amusement and attraction at the fair such as the magicians and

The Ethics Of Care Ethics
Care Ethics (Feminist Ethics) is the importance of caring relationships in life whether its human or
animal related. The main goal of care ethics is to maintain and promote caring relationships. Care
ethics involves helping both yourself and the world around you. It gives you the motivation to care for
others beside yourself. Care ethics according to the article is more a general approach than a theory in
regards to other ethical practices. The goal of care ethics is to show that women have the same equal
rights as men and that they both have freedoms of their own. This is important as this is helping to
address equality among the human race. Care ethics as a whole revolves around emotions.
Care ethic believers preach that having emotions helps you to think and feel for others. The goal in
emotions is to focus on the wants and needs of the one being cared for. They believe through this they
can relate to others in their needs. An example that the article gives is the mother child relationship. If
a child wants something to eat, the mother of that child knows best what the child needs. This is due to
the caring motherly nature that mothers have. Also, caring helps to motivate us to tend to those, even
if we are exhausted, and angry. The difference between care ethics and utilitarianism is that utilitarian
s do not believe that emotions are helping them to choose right or wrong in any situation. They believe
that through calculations, they can

Grade level: 6.6
Transportation of the Civil War Before the Civil War there were things that the North and the South
needed to use to move things around the place. There are two things that were most important. The
train that was the most important was the R.R locomotive and the man that made that was Richard
Trevithick. They moved the steal and other things on the rail and the R.R was used in the North more
than the South. They also used boats. Since they did not have steam boats, they used row boats. The
guy that made the steam boats was John Fitch. They used the steam boats to carry cotton up and down
the rivers. They used trains and steam boats to move cotton and steal during the ... Show more content

transportation back then was the steam boats and the R R train they were the high money
transportation for the southerners that was lots of money but to the Northerners that was nothing.
There was so many things that the South had that the North did not have. There was so many thing to
get a person around the place but when the y can out with the steam boats and the R R train there was
a different way of getting to place to place. Back then there was so many thinning that was happening
like cotton and rail road so they needed to find people to get it places so they made the train and steam
boat. Transportation was a big deal back then likes who is going to take my things and stuff, and who
was going to make it here. They all needed to make it place so someone in the South would use the
steam boat to where they need to go and if they can t make it that far they would have getting the train
and get there place. People back then need transportation and they got two big ones. Transportation
was a big deal back then so they all can still get around and not have walk but most of them did not

Irony in Pride and Prejudice
Irony in Pride and Prejudice
Irony forms the alma mater of Jane Austen s novels. Likewise, Pride and Prejudice is steeped in irony
of theme, situation, character, and narration. Austen uses it to establish the contrast between
appearance and reality.
As one examines Pride and Prejudice , one discovers the ironic significance of how pride leads to
prejudice and prejudice invites pride. Importantly, the novel elucidates how both Pride and Prejudice
have their corresponding virtues bound up within them: an intricate relationship that is at once
contradictory yet deep.
This goes in parlance with the critics of Austen who hold that she used irony as a shield to express her
radical ideas. It enables her to expose the ills behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Darcy remarks about Elizabeth that: tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me...
We relish the ironical flavour of this statement much later when we reflect that the woman who was
not handsome enough to dance with was really good enough for him tomarry. He removes Bingley
from Netherfield because he considers it imprudent to forge a marriage alliance with the Bennet
Family, but himself ends up marrying the second Bennet sister. Collins proposes to Elizabeth when her
heart is full of Wickham and Darcy proposes to her exactly at the moment when she hates him most.
Elizabeth tells Mr. Collins that she is not the type to reject the first proposal and accept the second but
does exactly this when Darcy proposes a second time. The departure of the militia from Meryton was
expected to put an end to Lydia s flirtations. Ironically, it brings about her elopement. The Lydia
Wickham episode may seem like an insurmountable barrier between Elizabeth and Darcy, but is
actually instrumental in bringing them together. Lady Catherine, attempting to prevent their marriage
only succeeds in hastening it.
Irony in character is even more prominent than irony of situation. It is ironical that Elizabeth who
prides herself on her perception is quite blinded by her own prejudices and she errs in judging intricate
characters. Wickham appears suave and charming but is

King Leopold and the Belgian Congo Essay
King Leopold and the Belgian Congo
It is widely debated why exactly King Leopold decided to conquer the Congo, but the general
consensus seems to be that it was out of the belief that the highlands of the Congo may be as rich in
gold as the mountains of the western slope of the American Continent (Stead). In the mid 1870s, the
King hired Henry Stanley, who was familiar with many parts of Africa, to help him go about
conquering. During the following years Stanley stayed in Africa, talking various tribes into signing
over their lands and rights. After this was completed the King officially took over the Congo,
renaming it the Congo Free State. This was especially ironic because all natives of the country were
either forced to give up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, word started to spread about what was going on. The public had strongly believed that the
natives were benefiting from being civilized through their forced labor. However, between disgusted
Belgian officials and authors such as Joseph Conrad and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the truth was
becoming clearer. In 1904, the Congo Reform Association was founded. Four years later, King
Leopold was made to turn over the Belgian Congo to the Belgian government. Much of the collected
evidence against him was in the form of photographs. The king had managed to successfully bribe
almost every single person who might otherwise have made a witness against the goings on in the
Belgian Congo, as it was renamed after being handed over to the Belgian government. This did very
little good for the people of the Congo; they were still being overworked, repressed, and denied basic
human rights. The situation was more than a little embarrassing for the king, who disliked his
authority being overshadowed. Still, his profit from the matter was no cause for complaint. Leopold s
original investment was said to be somewhere in the neighborhood of six and a half million dollars;
the financial gain was that number, multiplied many times over. Compared to Belgium s profit, during
its time of colonization the population of the Congo was decreased by

towel. Once I have dried the eggs off, I will start to test each one to determine how high each one can
bounce and which one will break first. I will do this experiment by dropping each egg no more than 2
inches from a tabletop. I will make a note of how many bounces it took before each egg broke. I will
record this on my data sheet. Once I have completed this experiment, then I will be able to answer the
question I have.

  • 4. The Global Ascent Of The Nation State Essay Those born after 1980 may take for granted the fact that the world is made up of about 200 nation states, which appear to be more or less equal in terms of the legitimacy of their nationhood. However, history suggests that not all nation states are created in quite the same way. According to Wimmer and Feinstein: the global ascent of the nation state over the pass 200 years was a discontinuous process, unfolding in various waves linked to the break up of large empires. By comparing the creation of nation states in the nineteenth century to those of the twentieth century, it is evident that, while the end result was the same, the means of creating nation states can be quite different. There are many factors and events which lead up to independence and nation state creation, such as nationalist sentiment, revolution, war, treaties, and tensions between people and rulers. Nation states created in the nineteenth century are more akin to what Montserrat Guibernau defines as nations . Based on Guibernau s definition, nations are groups of people conscious of forming a community, and they share a common past and culture. Conversely, in the process of creating a nation state, a group hopes to develop the community after the fact. Nation states may be the result of a treaty or consolidation of ethnic territories, meaning their histories can be fragmented and incongruent. The new nation states of the nineteenth century, namely of France and the United States of America, are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The peacock bass, by nature, is aggressive and its personality is downright belligerent. It is a fish so powerful that it can destroy tackle, straighten some hooks and tear hardware right out of some hardwood and hard plastic baits. The fiercest fighting fish in the world may mangle poorly constructed lures and even break them apart, and then give you the battle of your life. It is impossible to exaggerate the strike and fight of this colorful gamefish. The larger it gets, in contradiction to its North American cousins, the better it fights. Once you ve found the peacock s hangout, there should be others in the area. You can stop and cast in the same vicinity (middle of that lagoon) and catch plenty of big fish. It s been my experience, however, that mid size and smaller peacocks generally are not in the middle; they are hiding under cover along the bank. An angler and his alert partner can utilize the team approach to catch more peacocks. Whoever is not fighting the fish should make a quick cast near the battling peacock, and often, he ll hook a second fish. Peacocks school, and members of that school will often follow a hooked fish right to the boat. The hangers on will be after the bait or lure hanging from the unfortunate fish s jaw. It s a tactic I ve used often, successfully. The lagoons and lakes with a lot of cover in the form of standing timber or giant boulders are prime places for big peacock. • 11. Persuasive Essay On Drug Decriminalization Just Say No. This phrase was uttered in 1982 by Nancy Reagan, the first lady of the United States, in response to a schoolgirl s question of what she should do if offered drugs (Weinraub A5). These words became the slogan for a nationwide substance abuse prevention program that followed the then recently enacted drug policies intended to discourage the manufacture, sale, and use of illicit drugs in the United States. These zero tolerance policies carried harsh penalties and strict enforcement for all drug related offenses. Almost four decades later, these policies are still in effect, as is their focus on criminalization as a means to reduce the availability and usage of drugs. Their ineffectiveness is evidenced by the facts that drug use rates have remained steady over the past four decades and incarceration rates have exponentially rose during that same period. I believe that a new course of action should be taken, and a bold new drug policy should be enacted. Decriminalization would result in a substantial decrease of the prison population, relieve the unnecessary burden that has been placed on our criminal justice system, shift the paradigm from drug enforcement to drug treatment, reduce the health risk of HIV, AIDS, and heroin related deaths; and provide unprecedented benefits from the regulation of the manufacturing and sales of substances that are currently illegal. The history we learn about these prophets should teach us many things that we as Christians are called to know. Name: The names Daniel and Ezekiel are similar in the fact that they were both taken from Hebrew and both are named after their authors. The difference is apparent when we look at the meaning of the names. Daniel means God is Judge or God is my Judge , whereas Ezekiel means God strengthens or strengthened by God . Theme: There s not much similarity in the themes of these books except that in both books, God s grace is plainly shown. That is about where the similarities end. Emergency alarms suddenly fill the air and you rush outside to see what could possibly be happening. Your neighbors are packing their cars and fleeing in a panic; you then hurry back inside to watch the news. The emergency broadcast system appears on the screen and informs you that nuclear missiles have been launched at the United States one of which is headed to your city. Reality strikes you as you realize that there is nothing you can do except await the impending death and destruction that is headed your way. The following was a possible scenario that could happen to a world with nuclear weapons. The possibility of nuclear war could be eliminated with the disarmament of nuclear weapons. In 1945, the first nuclear bomb was deployed over Hiroshima, Japan claiming 90,000 lives. According to Nuclear Darkness , that bomb contained only 15,000 tons of TNT, whereas a modern day nuclear weapon contains 20,000,000 tons. If a modern day nuclear bomb was deployed, the results would be catastrophic. According to Nuclear Arsenals , there are approximately 15,000 nuclear warheads in the world. Why are these differences significant in the overall function of the circulatory system? Please be specific. The arteries are thicker and more elastic because of the fast pumping of blood that leaves the heart to other organs to the body, as where the veins are small due to the low blood flow because of the slow movement from the capillaries to the veins not like the forceful pumping from the heart to the arteries to the rest of the body. The Oxygenated blood goes through the arteries except the pulmonary arteries. Then Deoxygenated blood goes through the veins except the pulmonary veins. The lumen of the artery is narrow, were as the lumen of the veins is wider. There are not valves in the arteries, were as the valves are present in veins. In the arteries, endothelial cells of tunica intima are more long then wider, and have more elastic membrane that is more developed. Then the Tunica media is more muscular, and the tunica extrema is not as developed. In veins, the endothelial cells of tunica intima are not as long and have more elastic membrane then being developed. The Tunica media is less muscular were the tunica extrema is more developed. Hence, this rate can be regarded as opportunity cost of investment because it is the second best alternative for the company for investment purposes. So, the NPV can be calculated by taking the sum of present values of all the cash flows. This NPV comes out to be 3,703,176 Pesos. This NPV value can be converted into Euros by dividing the NPV value by the spot exchange rate. The spot exchange rate is 15.99 MXN/EURO. Hence, by dividing 3,703,176 by 15.99, NPV value in terms of Euro comes out to be 231,593 Euros. Compute the NPV in €s by translating future peso cash flows into €s at expected future spot rates. • 43. The Ethics Of Care Ethics Care Ethics (Feminist Ethics) is the importance of caring relationships in life whether its human or animal related. The main goal of care ethics is to maintain and promote caring relationships. Care ethics involves helping both yourself and the world around you. It gives you the motivation to care for others beside yourself. Care ethics according to the article is more a general approach than a theory in regards to other ethical practices. The goal of care ethics is to show that women have the same equal rights as men and that they both have freedoms of their own. This is important as this is helping to address equality among the human race. Care ethics as a whole revolves around emotions. Care ethic believers preach that having emotions helps you to think and feel for others. The goal in emotions is to focus on the wants and needs of the one being cared for. They believe through this they can relate to others in their needs. An example that the article gives is the mother child relationship. If a child wants something to eat, the mother of that child knows best what the child needs. This is due to the caring motherly nature that mothers have. Also, caring helps to motivate us to tend to those, even if we are exhausted, and angry. The difference between care ethics and utilitarianism is that utilitarian s do not believe that emotions are helping them to choose right or wrong in any situation. They believe that through calculations, they can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Irony in Pride and Prejudice Irony in Pride and Prejudice Irony forms the alma mater of Jane Austen s novels. Likewise, Pride and Prejudice is steeped in irony of theme, situation, character, and narration. Austen uses it to establish the contrast between appearance and reality. As one examines Pride and Prejudice , one discovers the ironic significance of how pride leads to prejudice and prejudice invites pride. Importantly, the novel elucidates how both Pride and Prejudice have their corresponding virtues bound up within them: an intricate relationship that is at once contradictory yet deep. This goes in parlance with the critics of Austen who hold that she used irony as a shield to express her radical ideas. It enables her to expose the ills behind ... Elizabeth tells Mr. Collins that she is not the type to reject the first proposal and accept the second but does exactly this when Darcy proposes a second time. The departure of the militia from Meryton was expected to put an end to Lydia s flirtations. Ironically, it brings about her elopement. The Lydia Wickham episode may seem like an insurmountable barrier between Elizabeth and Darcy, but is actually instrumental in bringing them together. Lady Catherine, attempting to prevent their marriage only succeeds in hastening it. Irony in character is even more prominent than irony of situation. • 46. King Leopold and the Belgian Congo Essay King Leopold and the Belgian Congo It is widely debated why exactly King Leopold decided to conquer the Congo, but the general consensus seems to be that it was out of the belief that the highlands of the Congo may be as rich in gold as the mountains of the western slope of the American Continent (Stead). In the mid 1870s, the King hired Henry Stanley, who was familiar with many parts of Africa, to help him go about conquering. During the following years Stanley stayed in Africa, talking various tribes into signing over their lands and rights. After this was completed the King officially took over the Congo, renaming it the Congo Free State. This was especially ironic because all natives of the country were either forced to give up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, word started to spread about what was going on. The public had strongly believed that the natives were benefiting from being civilized through their forced labor. However, between disgusted Belgian officials and authors such as Joseph Conrad and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the truth was becoming clearer. In 1904, the Congo Reform Association was founded. Four years later, King Leopold was made to turn over the Belgian Congo to the Belgian government. Much of the collected evidence against him was in the form of photographs. The king had managed to successfully bribe almost every single person who might otherwise have made a witness against the goings on in the Belgian Congo, as it was renamed after being handed over to the Belgian government. This did very little good for the people of the Congo; they were still being overworked, repressed, and denied basic human rights. The situation was more than a little embarrassing for the king, who disliked his authority being overshadowed. Still, his profit from the matter was no cause for complaint. Leopold s original investment was said to be somewhere in the neighborhood of six and a half million dollars; the financial gain was that number, multiplied many times over.
