The First World War
The first world war was one of the most brutal and remorseless events in history; the global conflict
that defined a century . Over nine million soldiers and a large amount of innocent civilians lost their
lives. Empires crumbled, revolution engulfed Russia and America rose to become a dominant world
power. Huge armies deployed new weapons of devastating effect from rifles and pistols to torpedoes
and flame throwers. These weapons were used not only in the trenches but by tanks too. This was an
advantage to those who were able to access such machinery as they could easily launch bullets and
missiles at nearby enemy bases. The downfall of the tank was the fact it was unable to cross the
trenches. Tanks were not the only pieces of equipment that could access this machinery but U boats
and planes too. The British carried bolt action rifles in which fired 15 rounds per minute at a minimum
range of 1,400 metres away. This allowed the British to take out foes at a far greater range. By using
machinery in which rules out the need for getting up close to the enemy was a great advantage during
world war one. Soldiers ran from trench to trench attacking with all that they had. This resulted in a
massacre as the soldiers running toward the trenches were shot down. Machinery such as machine
guns and heavy artillery were the weapons used in the trenches. In modern day society, machine guns
are the main weapons used by soldiers. This wasn t the case around the 1914s. They took four

Tennyson s The Arrow And The Charge Of The Light Brigade
Out of all the poems Tennyson wrote, The Eagle and The Charge Of The Light Brigade was the ones
that have been selected. Tennyson was one of the greats that came from the Victorian era. Tennyson
wasn t just known for being a poet, he was also known for writing plays and music. There will be
some comparing and contrasting of The Eagle and The Charge Of The Light Brigade on the poetic
devices Tennyson used and what inspired him to write both these poems. Tennyson was inspired to
write The Eagle when he went to the mountain. Even though The Eagle was a short poem, it had a lot
of imagery. He clasps the crag with crooked hands a good use of imagery in this poem. It is also a
metaphor because Tennyson wrote it as if the eagle had hands like a human. It explained about how
the eagle lives in its natural habitat. The Eagle had a rhyme scheme of (a, a, a) which is a triple rhyme,
where the stanzas have three lines and they all rhyme. The poem also contains alliteration and simile.
And like a thunderbolt he falls is a simile that was used that could be used to describe the eagle
falling. In all cases we would think Tennyson meant the eagle was falling fast like a thunderbolt but he
wasn t. Although the unwary reader might associate the swift, downward flight of the eagle with a
lightning bolt, Tennyson does not use this term (Jackson 26). He was wording it as the sound of the
rock landing a thunderbolt (Jackson 26). The poem uses alliteration such as He

Sabine Sally
Sabine Sally, the iron beauty of Sabine field; she has stood at her post for many years. Generation
after generation of Norwich Cadets have stood in the shadow of the ancient M4 Sherman, taken eyes
to her for the last push of motivation, and before her arrival to Norwich University, her kind lead the
charge into the European and Pacific theaters of World War Two. The significance of the iron giant is
the memory of the armored divisions that laid down their lives to put a stop to Hitler s war machine.
Despite the challenges, Sally s breed faced a multitude of technologically advanced SS and
Wehrmacht panzer battalions that performed in a superior manner in almost every way. The Sherman
breed held out through sheer force, will, and the means of production, these traits and abilities were
able to stomp out any opposing force. According to the Norwich Guidon, an article composed by Dr.
Richard W.Schneider(23rd president of Norwich University), Sally sat in storage for more than 15
years, until 1958. President MG Ernest N. Harmon decided to dedicate the M4 to the armored service
members of the Second World War, where she sat on the Upper Parade Ground until 1963 making way
for construction on Gerard Hall. The Sherman breed itself was the pride of the U.S. ... Show more

California s St. Francis Dam Collapse
Mr. Mulholland is an intelligent, sharp, and observant builder. he didn t seem to study much about
dams because the dam that he built was built on schist which water slides under. This man was known
throughout History for his confidence of how to build the dam. He seemed pretty gruff and impatient,
He seemed like he wanted to just get done with his work. Mulholland wanted to get it done because it
was a very long task, There are some answers to why Mulholland built the dam badly. One reason is
that it was probably too much on the dam. As the head of the department of power, Mr. Mulholland
faced a huge challenge which was to provide water for a rapidly grwoing city. People really need
water for getting clean. Mullholland thought he could help the people to get get water by building a
dam. He was mostly doing it for money. More water is always best for LA County because all
California has is sum most of the time, especially Southern California. Mr. Mulholland conceived a
daring plan to build the largest Dam in the world located in San Francisquito Canyon. As the designer
of the St. Francis Dam, Mr. Mulholland had to find a well structured place to build the Dam. He
needed to be very wise on where he built the dam. Mr. Mulholland also needed to be intelligent to
build the Dam. The Dam needed to be secure to prevent the heavy water to spill out. According to Mr.
Mulholland, the dam was built in San Francisquito Canyon off of San Francisquito Rd. The Dam

Essay on Zero Tolerance Policy of Education in America
Zero Tolerance Policy of Education in America In Bedford, Texas, a 16 year old honor student was
expelled after a security guard noticed a kitchen knife on the floor of the student s car. The knife
apparently had fallen unnoticed as the student carted some of his grandmother s possessions to
Goodwill. He was ordered to spend a year in a juvenile justice education program and banished from
district property and school sponsored activities. [...] In Deer Lakes, Pennsylvania, a kindergarten
student was suspended for bringing a toy axe to school. He was dressed as a firefighter for Halloween.

If a student was a relatively good kid with no past disciplinary actions taken against him or her, they
were much more likely to have a punishment that actually taught them something, rather than creating
a sense of resentment towards the school authorities, and the system in general. Before the era of zero
tolerance, a kid with a great future ahead could not screw it all up by making one simple mistake.
The line that zero tolerance crosses is one of intent. Zero tolerance looks only at the offense that has
been made, not at the circumstances that brought it about. If someone with no intent of doing
something unlawful accidentally commits a crime, they are punished equally with one who
deliberately inflicts harm.
So how did zero tolerance laws come about? When major incidences of school disruption, like the
Columbine shooting, started occurring, school officials decided they needed to start cracking down on
discipline. After realizing certain things were starting to get out of hand, the federal government made
it mandatory for, [...] a zero tolerance policy toward the possession of illegal drugs and weapons on
school grounds, (Copenhaver 1).
In the beginning days of zero tolerance, the laws truly did focus on behavior that could be deemed
dangerous and criminal, and required a mandatory expulsion for

Racism Is An Institutionalized System Of The United States...
Racism in the United States: How it has been Outlined by Panopticism We live in a world where
Panopticism rules and meritocracy is a myth. Racism has always been present, and it travelled across
the sea with the settlers of the New World. Herman Melville is quoted by Ronald Takaki as saying,
You cannot spill a drop of American blood, without spilling the blood of the whole world. We are not
a narrow tribe, (Takaki, 5). However, White men have a history of labelling people. They label the
norms, people like themselves, White, as us, and they label the abnorms, the people different from us,
the people of color, as them. Racism is an institutionalized system that has evolved throughout the
centuries under one model: Jeremy Bentham s Panopticon. We are able to track these advancements as
they go from various forms of punishment into the treatment of certain groups as inferior, or
abnormal, and others as superior, or normal. Racism has its roots in many systems that have taken
shape and evolved over hundreds of years of history. In the 17th century, a town took drastic measures
to diminish the risk of spreading the Bubonic plague. Among their efforts to exterminate the lethal
effects of such a horrible disease, the town set up a strict system for its residence. Officials shut down
the town and all of its outlying districts. They then divided it into separate quarters with governing
officials overseeing the unfolding events there. These officials would report to the

Doing Gender
In this essay I discuss that doing gender means creating differences between girls and boys and
women and men.... (West Zimmerman 2002:13) I am concentrating on the female perspective, how
societyputs forth expectations of what is natural or biological even though, in some cases, it can be
quite demeaning and degrading. I am using some examples from the local media and also a few
childhoodexperiences that have helped me to now strongly suspect that the quote from Simone
Beauvoir (1972) One is not born a woman, but rather becomes one most likely has quite a bit of truth
to it. There is continuing controversy about the differences between girls and boys, men and women,

Meaning Of Cults
A cult has many different meanings. Our textbook defines a cult as a group that is typically
characterized by three things; the first being rituals and beliefs, showing devotion to a god or person,
the second being a charismatic leader, and the third is isolation (Myers, 2015). In general, when
people think about cults the response is usually why are people persuaded to leave everything behind
and join a cult? There are usually two views on cults. The first is that a cult is not different from other
socially acceptable groups, however the second view is that cults use techniques different from other
groups that can be considered harmful (Pfeifer, 1992). My interest in this topic stems from the time I

males, gay, and lesbian former member of a cult. The article was well written and gave me a different
perspective on the behavior of those who were born and raised in these groups. The transitions were
clear and the author made a compelling argument from the very first line. It was a lot of information to

Us Dollar Euro Exchange Rate Essay
Introduction An analysis involving the U.S. dollar euro (USD EUR) exchange rate involves an in
depth study on the exchange rate between the two currencies. The U.S. dollar euro exchange rate in
the past was the most analyzed subject studied in global economics. However, any results attempted in
studying the dollar euro exchange rate has not been that successful in the past. This is due to
researchers not being able to make a connection between the fundamentals of macroeconomics and
exchange rates (Molodtsova, Nikolsko Rzhevskyy, Papell, 2011). For this purpose, this paper will
discuss where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in the past, where it is in the present, and
where it is expected to be at in the future?
The Past of the U.S. Dollar Euro Exchange Rate Where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in
the past several decades from 1999 2014 is as follows. Ever since the euro was created in January of
1999, the value of it has equaled to $1.17. In October of 2000, the dollar was gaining strength when
the euro was just $0.88. Afterwards the dollar continued to decline against the euro by 39% from 2001
to 2004 (Islam, 2005). However, in 2005 the dollar rose, but negative outlooks began to occur during
the Great Recession in 2006. As the dollar started to decline in 2006 before the subprime mortgage
crisis, capital flows caused more volatility in dollar euro exchange rate market forcing individuals to
deal with this economic situation (Harvey,

Democracy And Democracy
Introduction
The relationship between economic growth and democracy has long been discussed and dissected ever
since the beginning of the French Revolution and the democratization of Europe through the 18th and
20th centuries with various revolutions occurring, mostly in revolt to the overt dominance of the upper
classes. Yet, no concrete answer has been defined on whether democracy directly increases economic
growth, or that any non democratic systems are strictly better at growing an economy. In this paper,
there will be an examination of how despite no concrete definite answers about the correlation
between democratic regimes and economic prosperity/growth exist, democracy still heavily
encourages and enables for a maximized economic growth compared to totalitarian or monarchical
regimes, through some main principles that define a democratic regime: Rule of law, legitimate
authority, quality of governance, and participation of citizens, by means of humane work conditions,
equal participation among classes, governance motivating the workforce, and less effort and money
expunged towards legitimacy. Economic growth shouldn t necessarily come before democracy as
democracy facilitates and potentially maximizes economic growth.
Participation and Opportunity
One of the qualifiers for democracy, active participation of citizens in political and civic life (United
Nations[UN], 2005), is necessary for a prosperous marketplace for all industries which have
production in control of

based on the deadline and also by maintaining the maximum production percentage in the production
process. The Second module which is called managing suppliers includes ordering for raw materials
like for instance cotton, denim and silk. It helped me understand how to optimize our order based on
the factors like quality and lead time. The third module is known as forecasting and contracts, which
showed the significance of the understanding the idea of forecasting the demand of the up coming

While calicivirus is not a zoonotic disease, it is a highly transmissible disease among cats, especially

cage cards and signs on their cages alerting the staff to their condition. These cage cards indicate the
order in which these cages should be cleaned and animals medicated based on severity of symptoms.

I identified rabies and ringoworm as the most common zoonotic issues at APL. Other considerations
for zoonotic disease in shelter medicine are: toxoplasmosis, toxocariosis, pasteurellosis, and
bartonellosis. In response to educating the public on these diseases and how they were transmitted, I
developed a flyer to display at the shelter as well as provide as a handout to all adopters. I developed
separate flyers for each disease determined with zoonotic potential that was most common in this
shelter (ringworm) and most well known (rabies). Copies of the products developed are attached to the
end of this report (Appendix 2 3). In the future, if received well, then additional flyers could be
created for other zoonotic diseases. While doing research at the shelter, it became evident staff
members did not know what a zoonotic disease meant. I informally discussed zoonotic disease with
three staff members that represent the areas of the shelter with the most public interactions (cat nook,
kennels, and front office) and asked them the same three questions: 1. What does a zoonotic disease
mean? 2. Does the shelter have any zoonotic diseases currently? 3. Can you name one zoonotic
disease? The answers were as follows:
1. A disease that is fatal A disease people can get from animals A disease that animals spread to each

Driving Prosability
With the U.S. having the second largest passenger car market in the world, a total of 6,872,729 cars
sold in 2016(OICA, 2017), it is no wonder that we rank 19th worst on the traffic index. The countries
that rank the best on the index are all from europe(Numbeo,2017). So what is it that europe is getting
correct about traffic? It boils down to 3 major items, roundabouts and sharedspaces, strict following to
regulation and, public roads without speed limits.
The implementation of all these solutions would have to start at a basic level, the driver. Obtaining a
driver s licence in europe is a much more demanding task then in America. For instance most
european countries require an extensive driving course or class where you have to ... Show more

We already have speed limits, a requirement for the use of a turn signal, and by Florida law the far left
lane should only be utilized for overtaking(Fl DOT, 2017). From their the enforcement would become
strict and the speed limits of roads, that were determined to be safe, could increase or be unrestricted.
As previously stated, typically, most europeans follow the law closely. The laws of the Autobahn are
not as free as many Americans think. First of all, the Autobahn is every highway in Germany, and not
all of them are unrestricted in regard to speed. The majority of the Autobahn follows a speed limit
between 100 and 120 kilometer per hour (approximately 60 75 mile per hour)(BASt, 2015). One of
the unique aspects of the unrestricted sections are advisory speed limits and temporary speed limits.
Temporary speed limits are an ideal that many other countries should adopt. In essence when the
posted speed limit does not apply to the current conditions of the road, the government can change it.
An example of a temporary speed limit in use would be unfavorable weather conditions such as snow,
ice or rain on the road. These reduce the allowed speed of drivers to keep them safe. Another example
is during road work or construction the speed limit can be lowered to keep workers on the road safer.
Sections of road with adjustable speed limits make sure that drivers do not exceed what is safe in bad
condition but also doesn t hold people back in favorable

The Design Of Cross Sections
.1.8.1.1.3. Stress strain curves for normal and lightweight concrete for the design of cross sections in
Euro code:
From the design concrete curve, it can be defined by multiplying the compressive strength with a
coefficient factor σcc and dividing the strength by a material safety factor of γc = 1.5. The coefficient
σcc is the effect of long term behavior on the compressive strength. It is, however, arguable that the
reason for the using this factor is more related to the idealization of the shape of the stress strain curve
as used for flexure than the nature of loading. σcc is 0.85 of cylinder compressive strength and 0.67
for cube compressive strength. For the design of cross sections, the following stress strain relationship
may be used figure (2.12), table (2.5) and Eq. (2.2), Eq. (2.3): fcd= (αcc.fck)/γc (2.2) σc = fcd [1 (1 ԑc/

I Attended The University Symphony Orchestra Concert
I attended the University Symphony Orchestra Concert on Sep 30. Being my first ever symphony
orchestra concert, the excitement was at its peak. I learned about the concert before so that I could
understand a bit more about what is being played and the history of that piece. Reached UCA before
time so that I could find a seat for myself and glance through the program book. When I sat down,
there were already musicians on stage who were wearing formal black clothes, some of the musicians
started working on the passages they needed to polish up before the performance, with no regard for
what anyone else is practicing. With time, the hall started to fill up and just before start, I could see
that it s a full house. I didn t know that so many people love Symphony. I could see that the number of
string instrument were far more then brass or woodwind instrument. As I was observing the musicians
I saw my TA Courtney Pham on flutes. The conductor of this concert was Wes Kenny, who came on
stage with fourteen years of experience. And also featuring performance by famous Caleb Hudson on
trumpet. Beethoven s Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 was the first piece played by the orchestra. The piece
was nine minute long. Concertmaster Frangel Lopez Cesena comes out and sits in the first chair of the
first violins. This music is all about a roman patrician Coriolan who has been banished from his native
city due to betrayal. He then returns with an army for revenge but stops when he sees his

Life Insurance Beneficies
Typically, people who need to provide for others after death will purchase a life insurance policy.
Although there are many types of life insurance policies, the common thread between them are
beneficiary designations. In simple terms, once the policy holder perishes, the listed beneficiary will
receive the proceeds from the policy. However, listing beneficiaries on a life insurance policy needs
careful attention for reasons mentioned in the article List Your Beneficiaries Wisely in Your Estate
Plan. Otherwise, after death, unintended consequences may occur. So, to avoid unintended
consequences, properly listing beneficiaries on a life insurance policy is essential.

2) Setup a trust for the children and name a trusted adult as the trustee. In the trust, list the children as
the beneficiaries. To use this option, list the trust as the beneficiary of the life insurance policy. This
will allow the trustee to manage the proceeds for the children s benefit.
Finally, to avoid bureaucratic methods, simply list a trustworthy adult as beneficiary to the life
insurance policy, if possible. Typically, when estate planning for minor children, people usually name
a guardian. In this scenario, list the guardian as the beneficiary to the life insurance policy. If you are
entrusting your children s life to this person, then you should trust that this person will use the
proceeds in the children s best interest.

Introductory Wall Text The Album of La Revue Blanche, a collection of prints commissioned by the
late 19th century Parisian anarchist journal La Revue Blanche, provides not only an insight into
popular fin de siècle French print culture, but also a beautiful case study in the techniques developed
by leading artists in the realm of fine art lithography. As a graphic art that makes use of the
immiscibility of grease and water, this planographic printing process provides a wide array of stylistic
possibilities as these various prints demonstrate. As the new invention of photography was rapidly
replacing the traditional print as the sole means for reproductions in the late 19th century, artistic
quality in prints became increasingly important and printmaking flourished as an independent art
form. Parisian print publishers and dealers soon began to produce albums of prints published regularly

most successful examples of the symbiotic relationship between avant garde art prints and the

The Death Penalty Essay
As of January 1, 2010, 3,261 people live on death row ( Death ). Fewer than 3,261 people live in my
small town of Belle Plaine, so to me this number is outrageous. Inmates that wait on the death penalty
jail create a problem for everyone in the country. If we would put these inmates through the death
penalty quickly, we could take the problem away from the country. Why do we keep murderers and
criminals on death row around? People argue the controversial topic of the death penalty very
thoroughly, and address all sides. On one side people argue that we would save money and the death
penalty sets an example for other criminals, while on the opposition people argue that life without
parole is cheaper, capital punishment is morally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The money spent on prisoners each year adds up, and with the economy being at a low these last few
years, why would we want the government to have to pay that kind of money for these criminals?
Along with the costs of prison, the cost of court for the government is added in on top for each inmate
s court case. Some people think that just because the government is going to court that they do not
have to pay any money, which in fact a false statement. For a life without parole case, it will cost the
government $1.2 to $3.6 million dollars more than a death penalty court case (Sharp). Court costs are
so much because life without parole cases can be lengthy and last for years. People who like the
thought of life without parole would rather see criminals put in jail for life instead of killed. Also,
people argue that the death penalty is more expensive because of the court cost which is in fact not
true. As I have shown, the life without parole cases cost millions more than a death penalty case.
When addressing the death penalty, the morality of the death penalty is a big part of the argument. I
agree that killing a person is wrong and should not be done, but is that not why the death row inmates
are on death row? The people who do not want the death penalty say that killing a person is morally
wrong. Their argument is very understandable; likewise I argue that death row inmates made the
choice for themselves. The majority of death row inmates went out and

Herbal and Alternative Remedies
HERBAL AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICATIONS
Herbal remedies come from plants. If possible, choose a remedy which has been standardized, i.e. the
contents are approximately the same in each bottle or tablet you buy. Plant remedies are not always
safer than ordinary medicines. All of them can have side effects and interact with other medicines.
Supplements include vitamins, minerals and animal and plant products, such as cod liver oil. They can
also have side effects and interact with other medicines. Some people take supplements, like vitamin
C in high doses, but this can damage the liver or kidneys. Many supplements have a recommended
daily intake (RDI), or allowance (RDA). Do not go beyond this dose without talking to an experienced
health professional.
CAMs and mental health problems:
Many CAMs have been used for mental health problems, but there is little good evidence to support
their use. Some of these treatments may work, but most have not been thoroughly tested. The studies
have often been too small to give a clear answer. We know most about the treatments for depression,
anxiety and insomnia. Despite the lack of evidence, people all over the world take CAMs, and many
report that they find them helpful. Ultimately, whether taking CAMs is a good idea depends on
individual circumstances. We recommend that you talk to your GP or mental health team first.
If you are considering taking CAMs, you should seek specialist advice if:

Of the issues, Dr. Hart discussed I agreed with the idea that crimes and poverty still exist outside of

Personally, I agree that crime and poverty aren t a consequence of drug use rather a precursor to the

our hands than we do now. I fully understand where his thought process is but I feel a better way to
handle it would be to re evaluate our current laws. I don t think it would be helpful to say meth, crack,
heroin, and all that fall under that umbrella are free for use. The way I see it, people will start to take
advantage. There would be no regulations, no guidelines to follow. The way Dr. Hart is proposing, I
feel would backfire. What I would suggest is to start looking at laws and seeing where adjustments are
needed. A great example would be our transitioning marijuana use to recreational.

Before watching this TED talk, I had no clue that the one hit and you re hooked phrase came from
experiments conducted in the 1960 s. During these experiments, researchers had animals in cages with
only a lever which could be pulled to supply a dosage of a certain drug. The idea that only only one hit

Comparing Women In Ancient Rome And China
The civilizations of ancient Rome and China have long traditions of women occupying a lower
position in society than men. While this was a common idea, in practice, there were significant
differences in the way the two cultures treated women. Specific developments in both Rome and
China led them in two very different directions with regard to the type of lives women could live.
Although ancient Rome (750BC AD500) and China (350BC AD600) were both oppressive patriarchal
societies, the application of technology, widespread use of slavery and the translation of government
policies created more personal freedom for Roman women than Chinese women during that time.

When enemies were conquered some of the people were made slaves, but they were just as likely to
have been buried alive. The number of slaves in China did not exceed 1% of the population. The
feudal system of farming, common in China, could be considered a form of slavery. These were
Chinese citizens whose circumstances left them as indentured servants. A significant difference to
slavery in Rome, is that China never adopted the idea of large scale slavery of conquered people.
Slaves in China were just as likely to have been of Chinese descent as that of a conquered territory. In
China, the government often dictated what tasks slaves would perform. For instance, the government
was afraid of replacing Chinese workers in agriculture, so the Chinese people never enjoyed the
freedom from manual agricultural labor the way Roman s did. China could be viewed as a society
with slaves vs. the Roman slave society . As a result, slavery never became the liberator of women in
China the way it did in Rome. These phenomena never happened because of the government attitudes
toward conquered people and the way they chose to use the slave labor that was

The Effects Of Children After Parental Incarceration
A Literature Review: The Effects on Children After Parental Incarceration
Prisons have been around for centuries and in many countries the prison population has grown
quickly. The prisoners health, behavior and well being have been focal points in many social concerns,
however; incarceration goes beyond the prisoners experience. It touches employment after
incarceration, social stigma, and families and communities that have been affected by incarceration,
especially a child with incarcerated parents. That is what Joseph Murray, David P. Farrington, and
Ivana Sekol focus on, the forgotten victims of crime (Matthews 1983). It is no surprise that children
will experience many hardships emotionally and socially during their parental incarceration. This
article aims to describe the associations between parental incarceration and children s antisocial
behavior, mental health, drug use, and low educational performance prior to this event. The United
States has the highest rate of imprisonment and has the largest prison population in all of the world.
According to Glaze, about half of U.S. prisoners are parents of children under 18. Recent studies have
noted that there are long term effects toward parental incarceration of children showing undesirable
effects . In one study of 411 boys, those who experienced parental incarceration within their first 10
years of their life had double the risk for antisocial behavior, internalizing problems, and other adverse

Examples Of Righteousness In The Crucible
Over the course of history, the idea of righteousness has clouded people s thinking, leading to cruel
and unnecessary forms of punishment. Arthur Miller s The Crucible significantly illustrates human
cruelty in the name of righteousness. Inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, Miller s play,
The Crucible, focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that
can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. Miller bases the play on the historical account of the
Salem witch trials, a series of hearings before local magistrates followed by trials to prosecute people
accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. A modern
day example that can be recognizably compared to the Salem witch trials is racial profiling that
manifested in the 1700s. Racial profiling is the use of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or national
origin by law enforcement agents as a factor in deciding whom to investigate, arrest, or detain with no
evidence of a specific crime or criminal behavior. Throughout the play, there are numerous instances
of human cruelty in the name of righteousness that outline the basis of the Salem witch trials and
racial profiling in today s society. In both of the situations, The Crucible and racial profiling,
individuals use their authority to commit hanice interrogation techniques to get what they want from
innocent citizens. You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to

Cause Of Water Erosion In The United States
Introduction: Erosion is destruction on the rangeland from wind, water, cattle, and other natural
agents. The process where the Earth gets worn down and removes material from the top of the soil.
Erosion has been dated back to Plato and Aristotle (Montgomery et al 2007). There are many types of
erosion, water erosion, sheet erosion, gravitational erosion, and wind erosion (Zonghu et al 1991).
Water erosion is mainly in fields, where rilling would take place (Evan and Morgan 1974). Water
erosion usually happens due to the lack of cover on the rangelands, and heavy rainfall will destroy
plants, and even move the soil. Wind erosion is the most common type of erosion. One of the greatest
problems in the United State is the wind shifting the soil surface (Pierson et al 1961). Livestock such
as cattle (Bos taurus) also pose a threat to the landscape. Hart (1949) did a study on dairy farms, and
found excessive gully erosion. Land with erosion losses the ability to hold water for the soil (Gifford
and Whitehead 1982; Boardman and Mortlock 1993) while also losing key nutrients such as ... Show

Erosion can hardly be managed, and the best way to help erosion is to not let it happen to begin with.
In developing countries, more and more erosion has been discovered due to the lack of knowledge and
care for the landscapes (Lal et al 2001). Keeping vegetation on the soil surface as a cover is the major
key to keeping erosion away from the landscapes (Herrick and Duniway 2014). Nebraska deals with
mainly wind and gully erosion, but in places with a beach, managers and public are starting to see
beach erosion, which will actually result in property losses (Fischer et al 1990; Sorenson Dronen
Knudsen Jensen 2016). No matter what type of erosion, because of the increase in population of
humans, erosion needs to be considered and managed for so that our landscapes will have a fighting

Confucianism And Legalism
The law in which the Qin constructed was harsh and unjust. They abolished the Zhou ist feudal
system, replacing it with controlled local administration. The term in which this practice is called is
Legalism; the belief in which people are born with evil tendencies. The government demanded total
subordination of the people to the ruler. Although there is no commonly recognized founder, there is
one person who is credited for the establishment of Legalism: Shang Yang, an important statesman

This system was to keep everyone in their place and avoid rebellions and uprisings. There were
reports of subordination put into place once every three months, summaries every six, and permanent
records every twelve. There was a doctrine fixed into law, called the Six Parasites. This is however a
textual problem, there are actually sixteen. These parasites were rites, music, odes, history, cultivation,
goodness, filial devotion, brotherly love, sincerity, trustworthiness, uprightness, integrity, humaneness,
rightness, criticism of army, and lastly being ashamed of fighting. To violate any of these laws against
the six was subject to punishment. Death to any criminals and any officials who allowed crimes, their
punishments were carried out to their families and three generations after. When punishments are
imposed, they shall not be applied to the guilty party alone. Punishments were severe. Small crimes
were punished severly to make sure the punishment was understood and not repeated, especially if it
were a larger crime. When Shang Yang wrote, ...if they let their ambition go too far, they will become
too strong... it is interpreted that knowledge and aspiration for a better life can be power and lead to
rebellion against the government. More consequential victims were the critical thinking of Legalists
and the spirit of ruling by law, blamed for Qin s demise and condemned for two millennia by
Confucians advocating the rule by men

Antipsychotic Therapy For Schizophrenia Essay
Medications used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia are often used when the individual is in a state
of psychosis. These medications are commonly antipsychotics, but can also include atypical
antipsychotics as well. Types of antipsychotics include phenothiazines, chlorpromazines,
butyrophenones, and thioxanthenes. Phenothiazines work by blocking dopamine receptors in the
brain, preventing excess stimulation and thus reduced symptoms. All antipsychotic medications do
help reduce positive symptoms, but none reduce negative symptoms. However, they also result in
many negative motor side effects. Atypical antipsychotics work by influencing serotonin receptors and
typically have less motor side effects than antipsychotics. Some of these medications include

Logarithms During The Scientific Revolution Of The 17th...
Though the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century produced many inspiring inventions and
discoveries, one of the greatest contributions of the period, at least in the field of mathematics, was the
introduction of logarithms. Mathematically, a logarithm is denoted as follows logb(x)=y, where y is
the power to which b must be raised in order to produce the answer x. However, simply explained, a
logarithm is a quantity representing the power to which a fixed number, the base, must be raised to
produce a specific number. Therefore, to give just one computational example, log2(32) = 5 because
25 =32.
The term logarithm was derived from the Greek words for ratio and number. Conceptually speaking,
logarithms are the inverse operation of exponents. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The combined efforts of Napier, Burgi, and Briggs contributed to the invention of a mathematical
calculation that is used daily in our modern life. By referring back to the logarithm tables, large and
tedious calculations can be avoided and simplified by simply performing two steps by using the
logarithm laws. This discovery arose in the time period when there were several mathematical and
scientific discoveries being made, and resulted in a highly convenient and faster method for
completing complex

Myth and Statue of Phidias
Myth: Demeter, Hades, and Persephone
Persephone was the daughter of the Greek god, Zeus, and goddess, Demeter. She was beautiful and
happy. One day, as she was picking flowers in her field, her uncle, Hades, saw her and instantly fell in
love with her. Hades decided to kidnap Persephone and took her to the underworld, where he was the
god. He locked her in the Hall of Hades, where Persephone wept endlessly. There is a legend that says
that if you eat anything in Hades lair, you can never leave. Persephone didn t want to risk being stuck
in hell for the rest of her life, so she didn t eat. This lasted for a week, until she could no longer bear
the hunger; Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds and life in the underworld began to feel permanent.
In the intro to the story it mentions something very important about Zeus wife (and sister), Demeter.
Her job of growing the crops was of the utmost importance if she was happy, her crops would grow
abundantly, but, if she was sad, her crops would wither and die. The people would begin to starve. The
other gods, demigods, and even mortals would strive to keep her happy. What made Demeter most
happy was spending time with her daughter, Persephone. So when Persephone was kidnapped,
Demeter was devastated; and the crops began to die.
Zeus had to get Persephone back because he was the king of the gods and was responsible for the lives
of the people who would die if no crops grew. He sent his son, Hermes, a messenger and great deal

Examples Of Miscommunication In Grendel s Life
There are constantly new elements of Grendel s life in John Gardner s Grendel that make it more
difficult for Grendel to believe there is a meaning to life . Miscommunication is important in Grendel
because it keeps a constant conflict between the Danes and Grendel. Hatred is important because it
causes Grendel to repeatedly attack the mead hall, which increases the Danes hatred for Grendel. John
Gardner shows how miscommunication drives hatred. Grendel, the man eating monster, decides he
wants to show himself to the people of Hrothgar s kingdom to prevent his loneliness. Instead of
gaining friendship, Grendel is attacked and almost killed by Hrothgar s warriors. Grendel intimidates
the Danish warriors when he holds a dead body in front of

The Flight, Everything Changed My Life
The Flight
Everything changed . My way of thinking changed. My idea of the world changed . My reasons for
studying changed . My way of sleeping changed . Everything changed when I got off that plane . But
it was still me . I still wanted to play. I still wanted to get a car . I still wanted to waste my time . I still
didn t want to study. Before the plane, I didn t have a reason to study. There weren t many choices
anyway . I didn t even know if I needed to study. I could have died at any time a missile could have hit
my house, or a bullet could have hit me in the head.
It was hard on me. It was hard on my family. It was especially hard on my mom, she almost had a
nervous breakdown. She was always sad and crying. If we ever talked about how the city was or about
politics, she would start crying. Whenever one of my aunts called we had to tell them to not talk about
that stuff. She wouldn t let my sisters nor my cousins play in the yard, neither would my aunts. Now
that I think about it, they were right. They really could have been killed. They could have got killed by
a drive by shooter that had no reason except his desire to kill another person. They could have been
kidnapped, and maybe return for a ransom. I was confused why my mom felt like that. It was true that
we were in a city that was in a war and the city was very dangerous, but the war was on the sides of
the city or that s what I thought. On the other side of my family, my dad s side, things

When Harry Met Sally Summary
ould you want to read a technology startup version of When Harry Met Sally?, a story about two
doctoral students building the most amazing internet success of our time? Only this story entails
transforming a mathematical term into a popular verb used in daily conversations for research and web
surfing by students and business professionals. All of this and much more has been compiled in a
chronology of events associated with the early beginnings in The Google Story. The story tends to
follow a similar tone and theme to the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley, but with less drama and
industrial espionage. The founders are portrayed as the rock stars of the technology world. The book
details the early lives of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, beginning when they met as computer science
doctoral students at Stanford University. Ironically, the derivation of the company s name, (googol,
one followed by 100 zeroes) equates to the depth of the journey to build the technology phenomenon
called Google. Throughout the book, it is clear that the indelible influence of their families provided
the strong foundation of work ethic, character, and respect for education. Sergey and ... Show more

The early influence of Sergey and Larry to create a non traditional and university environment led to
the Burning Man retreat in a northern Nevada location. A few months after this event, Sergey was
working in the early morning on Halloween eve. Still fresh with the energy from the retreat, he created
a Halloween themed logo consisting of substituting orange pumpkins for the Os in Google. After
receiving the lukewarm assessment as clip artsy from another early morning worker, Sergey asked to
have the artwork placed on the homepage. The graphic gained significant attention and positive
responses (p. 75). So, the creative, holiday oriented logo transformation

  • 2. The First World War The first world war was one of the most brutal and remorseless events in history; the global conflict that defined a century . Over nine million soldiers and a large amount of innocent civilians lost their lives. Empires crumbled, revolution engulfed Russia and America rose to become a dominant world power. Huge armies deployed new weapons of devastating effect from rifles and pistols to torpedoes and flame throwers. These weapons were used not only in the trenches but by tanks too. This was an advantage to those who were able to access such machinery as they could easily launch bullets and missiles at nearby enemy bases. The downfall of the tank was the fact it was unable to cross the trenches. Tanks were not the only pieces of equipment that could access this machinery but U boats and planes too. The British carried bolt action rifles in which fired 15 rounds per minute at a minimum range of 1,400 metres away. This allowed the British to take out foes at a far greater range. By using machinery in which rules out the need for getting up close to the enemy was a great advantage during world war one. Soldiers ran from trench to trench attacking with all that they had. This resulted in a massacre as the soldiers running toward the trenches were shot down. Machinery such as machine guns and heavy artillery were the weapons used in the trenches. In modern day society, machine guns are the main weapons used by soldiers. This wasn t the case around the 1914s. They took four ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tennyson s The Arrow And The Charge Of The Light Brigade Out of all the poems Tennyson wrote, The Eagle and The Charge Of The Light Brigade was the ones that have been selected. Tennyson was one of the greats that came from the Victorian era. Tennyson wasn t just known for being a poet, he was also known for writing plays and music. There will be some comparing and contrasting of The Eagle and The Charge Of The Light Brigade on the poetic devices Tennyson used and what inspired him to write both these poems. Tennyson was inspired to write The Eagle when he went to the mountain. Even though The Eagle was a short poem, it had a lot of imagery. He clasps the crag with crooked hands a good use of imagery in this poem. It is also a metaphor because Tennyson wrote it as if the eagle had hands like a human. It explained about how the eagle lives in its natural habitat. The Eagle had a rhyme scheme of (a, a, a) which is a triple rhyme, where the stanzas have three lines and they all rhyme. The poem also contains alliteration and simile. And like a thunderbolt he falls is a simile that was used that could be used to describe the eagle falling. In all cases we would think Tennyson meant the eagle was falling fast like a thunderbolt but he wasn t. Although the unwary reader might associate the swift, downward flight of the eagle with a lightning bolt, Tennyson does not use this term (Jackson 26). He was wording it as the sound of the rock landing a thunderbolt (Jackson 26). The poem uses alliteration such as He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Generation after generation of Norwich Cadets have stood in the shadow of the ancient M4 Sherman, taken eyes to her for the last push of motivation, and before her arrival to Norwich University, her kind lead the charge into the European and Pacific theaters of World War Two. The significance of the iron giant is the memory of the armored divisions that laid down their lives to put a stop to Hitler s war machine. Despite the challenges, Sally s breed faced a multitude of technologically advanced SS and Wehrmacht panzer battalions that performed in a superior manner in almost every way. The Sherman breed held out through sheer force, will, and the means of production, these traits and abilities were able to stomp out any opposing force. According to the Norwich Guidon, an article composed by Dr. Richard W.Schneider(23rd president of Norwich University), Sally sat in storage for more than 15 years, until 1958. President MG Ernest N. Harmon decided to dedicate the M4 to the armored service members of the Second World War, where she sat on the Upper Parade Ground until 1963 making way for construction on Gerard Hall. California s St. Francis Dam Collapse Mr. Mulholland is an intelligent, sharp, and observant builder. he didn t seem to study much about dams because the dam that he built was built on schist which water slides under. This man was known throughout History for his confidence of how to build the dam. He seemed pretty gruff and impatient, He seemed like he wanted to just get done with his work. Mulholland wanted to get it done because it was a very long task, There are some answers to why Mulholland built the dam badly. One reason is that it was probably too much on the dam. As the head of the department of power, Mr. Mulholland faced a huge challenge which was to provide water for a rapidly grwoing city. People really need water for getting clean. Mullholland thought he could help the people to get get water by building a dam. He was mostly doing it for money. More water is always best for LA County because all California has is sum most of the time, especially Southern California. Mr. Mulholland conceived a daring plan to build the largest Dam in the world located in San Francisquito Canyon. As the designer of the St. Francis Dam, Mr. Mulholland had to find a well structured place to build the Dam. He needed to be very wise on where he built the dam. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a student was a relatively good kid with no past disciplinary actions taken against him or her, they were much more likely to have a punishment that actually taught them something, rather than creating a sense of resentment towards the school authorities, and the system in general. Before the era of zero tolerance, a kid with a great future ahead could not screw it all up by making one simple mistake. The line that zero tolerance crosses is one of intent. Zero tolerance looks only at the offense that has been made, not at the circumstances that brought it about. If someone with no intent of doing something unlawful accidentally commits a crime, they are punished equally with one who deliberately inflicts harm. So how did zero tolerance laws come about? When major incidences of school disruption, like the Columbine shooting, started occurring, school officials decided they needed to start cracking down on discipline. After realizing certain things were starting to get out of hand, the federal government made it mandatory for, [...] a zero tolerance policy toward the possession of illegal drugs and weapons on school grounds, (Copenhaver 1). • 8. Racism Is An Institutionalized System Of The United States... Racism in the United States: How it has been Outlined by Panopticism We live in a world where Panopticism rules and meritocracy is a myth. Racism has always been present, and it travelled across the sea with the settlers of the New World. Herman Melville is quoted by Ronald Takaki as saying, You cannot spill a drop of American blood, without spilling the blood of the whole world. We are not a narrow tribe, (Takaki, 5). However, White men have a history of labelling people. They label the norms, people like themselves, White, as us, and they label the abnorms, the people different from us, the people of color, as them. Racism is an institutionalized system that has evolved throughout the centuries under one model: Jeremy Bentham s Panopticon. We are able to track these advancements as they go from various forms of punishment into the treatment of certain groups as inferior, or abnormal, and others as superior, or normal. Racism has its roots in many systems that have taken shape and evolved over hundreds of years of history. In the 17th century, a town took drastic measures to diminish the risk of spreading the Bubonic plague. Among their efforts to exterminate the lethal effects of such a horrible disease, the town set up a strict system for its residence. Officials shut down the town and all of its outlying districts. They then divided it into separate quarters with governing officials overseeing the unfolding events there. These officials would report to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our textbook defines a cult as a group that is typically characterized by three things; the first being rituals and beliefs, showing devotion to a god or person, the second being a charismatic leader, and the third is isolation (Myers, 2015). In general, when people think about cults the response is usually why are people persuaded to leave everything behind and join a cult? There are usually two views on cults. The first is that a cult is not different from other socially acceptable groups, however the second view is that cults use techniques different from other groups that can be considered harmful (Pfeifer, 1992). • 14. Us Dollar Euro Exchange Rate Essay Introduction An analysis involving the U.S. dollar euro (USD EUR) exchange rate involves an in depth study on the exchange rate between the two currencies. The U.S. dollar euro exchange rate in the past was the most analyzed subject studied in global economics. However, any results attempted in studying the dollar euro exchange rate has not been that successful in the past. This is due to researchers not being able to make a connection between the fundamentals of macroeconomics and exchange rates (Molodtsova, Nikolsko Rzhevskyy, Papell, 2011). For this purpose, this paper will discuss where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in the past, where it is in the present, and where it is expected to be at in the future? The Past of the U.S. Dollar Euro Exchange Rate Where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in the past several decades from 1999 2014 is as follows. Ever since the euro was created in January of 1999, the value of it has equaled to $1.17. In October of 2000, the dollar was gaining strength when the euro was just $0.88. Afterwards the dollar continued to decline against the euro by 39% from 2001 to 2004 (Islam, 2005). However, in 2005 the dollar rose, but negative outlooks began to occur during the Great Recession in 2006. As the dollar started to decline in 2006 before the subprime mortgage crisis, capital flows caused more volatility in dollar euro exchange rate market forcing individuals to deal with this economic situation (Harvey, ... Democracy And Democracy Introduction The relationship between economic growth and democracy has long been discussed and dissected ever since the beginning of the French Revolution and the democratization of Europe through the 18th and 20th centuries with various revolutions occurring, mostly in revolt to the overt dominance of the upper classes. Yet, no concrete answer has been defined on whether democracy directly increases economic growth, or that any non democratic systems are strictly better at growing an economy. In this paper, there will be an examination of how despite no concrete definite answers about the correlation between democratic regimes and economic prosperity/growth exist, democracy still heavily encourages and enables for a maximized economic growth compared to totalitarian or monarchical regimes, through some main principles that define a democratic regime: Rule of law, legitimate authority, quality of governance, and participation of citizens, by means of humane work conditions, equal participation among classes, governance motivating the workforce, and less effort and money expunged towards legitimacy. Economic growth shouldn t necessarily come before democracy as democracy facilitates and potentially maximizes economic growth. It was in these activities I witnessed how calicivirus (non zoonotic) and ringworm (zoonotic) were being spread among the animals due to staff s lack of biosecurity measures. While calicivirus is not a zoonotic disease, it is a highly transmissible disease among cats, especially when proper protocols to prevent spread are not observed. Other considerations for zoonotic disease in shelter medicine are: toxoplasmosis, toxocariosis, pasteurellosis, and bartonellosis. In response to educating the public on these diseases and how they were transmitted, I developed a flyer to display at the shelter as well as provide as a handout to all adopters. I developed separate flyers for each disease determined with zoonotic potential that was most common in this shelter (ringworm) and most well known (rabies). Copies of the products developed are attached to the end of this report (Appendix 2 3). In the future, if received well, then additional flyers could be created for other zoonotic diseases. While doing research at the shelter, it became evident staff members did not know what a zoonotic disease meant. I informally discussed zoonotic disease with three staff members that represent the areas of the shelter with the most public interactions (cat nook, kennels, and front office) and asked them the same three questions: 1. What does a zoonotic disease mean? 2. Does the shelter have any zoonotic diseases currently? 3. Can you name one zoonotic disease? The answers were as follows: 1. From their the enforcement would become strict and the speed limits of roads, that were determined to be safe, could increase or be unrestricted. As previously stated, typically, most europeans follow the law closely. The laws of the Autobahn are not as free as many Americans think. First of all, the Autobahn is every highway in Germany, and not all of them are unrestricted in regard to speed. The majority of the Autobahn follows a speed limit between 100 and 120 kilometer per hour (approximately 60 75 mile per hour)(BASt, 2015). One of the unique aspects of the unrestricted sections are advisory speed limits and temporary speed limits. Temporary speed limits are an ideal that many other countries should adopt. In essence when the posted speed limit does not apply to the current conditions of the road, the government can change it. An example of a temporary speed limit in use would be unfavorable weather conditions such as snow, ice or rain on the road. These reduce the allowed speed of drivers to keep them safe. Another example is during road work or construction the speed limit can be lowered to keep workers on the road safer. Stress strain curves for normal and lightweight concrete for the design of cross sections in Euro code: From the design concrete curve, it can be defined by multiplying the compressive strength with a coefficient factor σcc and dividing the strength by a material safety factor of γc = 1.5. The coefficient σcc is the effect of long term behavior on the compressive strength. It is, however, arguable that the reason for the using this factor is more related to the idealization of the shape of the stress strain curve as used for flexure than the nature of loading. σcc is 0.85 of cylinder compressive strength and 0.67 for cube compressive strength. As a graphic art that makes use of the immiscibility of grease and water, this planographic printing process provides a wide array of stylistic possibilities as these various prints demonstrate. As the new invention of photography was rapidly replacing the traditional print as the sole means for reproductions in the late 19th century, artistic quality in prints became increasingly important and printmaking flourished as an independent art form. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The money spent on prisoners each year adds up, and with the economy being at a low these last few years, why would we want the government to have to pay that kind of money for these criminals? Along with the costs of prison, the cost of court for the government is added in on top for each inmate s court case. Some people think that just because the government is going to court that they do not have to pay any money, which in fact a false statement. For a life without parole case, it will cost the government $1.2 to $3.6 million dollars more than a death penalty court case (Sharp). Court costs are so much because life without parole cases can be lengthy and last for years. People who like the thought of life without parole would rather see criminals put in jail for life instead of killed. Also, people argue that the death penalty is more expensive because of the court cost which is in fact not true. As I have shown, the life without parole cases cost millions more than a death penalty case. When addressing the death penalty, the morality of the death penalty is a big part of the argument. Arthur Miller s The Crucible significantly illustrates human cruelty in the name of righteousness. Inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, Miller s play, The Crucible, focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. Miller bases the play on the historical account of the Salem witch trials, a series of hearings before local magistrates followed by trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. A modern day example that can be recognizably compared to the Salem witch trials is racial profiling that manifested in the 1700s. Racial profiling is the use of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or national origin by law enforcement agents as a factor in deciding whom to investigate, arrest, or detain with no evidence of a specific crime or criminal behavior. Throughout the play, there are numerous instances of human cruelty in the name of righteousness that outline the basis of the Salem witch trials and racial profiling in today s society. • 37. Cause Of Water Erosion In The United States Introduction: Erosion is destruction on the rangeland from wind, water, cattle, and other natural agents. The process where the Earth gets worn down and removes material from the top of the soil. Erosion has been dated back to Plato and Aristotle (Montgomery et al 2007). There are many types of erosion, water erosion, sheet erosion, gravitational erosion, and wind erosion (Zonghu et al 1991). Water erosion is mainly in fields, where rilling would take place (Evan and Morgan 1974). Water erosion usually happens due to the lack of cover on the rangelands, and heavy rainfall will destroy plants, and even move the soil. Wind erosion is the most common type of erosion. One of the greatest problems in the United State is the wind shifting the soil surface (Pierson et al 1961). Livestock such as cattle (Bos taurus) also pose a threat to the landscape. These medications are commonly antipsychotics, but can also include atypical antipsychotics as well. Types of antipsychotics include phenothiazines, chlorpromazines, butyrophenones, and thioxanthenes. Phenothiazines work by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, preventing excess stimulation and thus reduced symptoms. All antipsychotic medications do help reduce positive symptoms, but none reduce negative symptoms. However, they also result in many negative motor side effects. Atypical antipsychotics work by influencing serotonin receptors and typically have less motor side effects than antipsychotics. Though the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century produced many inspiring inventions and discoveries, one of the greatest contributions of the period, at least in the field of mathematics, was the introduction of logarithms. Mathematically, a logarithm is denoted as follows logb(x)=y, where y is the power to which b must be raised in order to produce the answer x. However, simply explained, a logarithm is a quantity representing the power to which a fixed number, the base, must be raised to produce a specific number. Therefore, to give just one computational example, log2(32) = 5 because 25 =32. The term logarithm was derived from the Greek words for ratio and number. Conceptually speaking, logarithms are the inverse operation of exponents. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the intro to the story it mentions something very important about Zeus wife (and sister), Demeter. Her job of growing the crops was of the utmost importance if she was happy, her crops would grow abundantly, but, if she was sad, her crops would wither and die. The people would begin to starve. The other gods, demigods, and even mortals would strive to keep her happy. What made Demeter most happy was spending time with her daughter, Persephone. So when Persephone was kidnapped, Demeter was devastated; and the crops began to die. Now that I think about it, they were right. They really could have been killed. They could have got killed by a drive by shooter that had no reason except his desire to kill another person. They could have been kidnapped, and maybe return for a ransom. I was confused why my mom felt like that.
