The Bicycle Thief Essay example
amp;#9;Another fine example of neorealism is The Bicycle Thief (1948), written by Cesare Zavattini
and directed by Vittorio De Sica. The narrative of this film unfolds in post W.W.II times. The film is a
portrait of the post war Italian disadvantaged class (the majority) in their search for self respect. It is a
time of struggle for the Italian people, amplified by a shortage of employment and lack of social
services. In the first scenes of the film, these conditions are evident as Antonio Ricci (Lamberto
Maggiorami) meets his spouse Maria (Lianalla Carell) on his way back home. We see the quot;men
quot; arguing at the employment quot;office quot; as the quot;women quot; argue about the shortage
of water. Although the director s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
amp;#9;Self respect and all the related values such as pride, dignity, modesty and honor are very
important in Italian society. Witness Bruno, whom at a young age, works full time at a gas station.
Bruno s contributions to the Ricci family make him a quot;man quot; and strip him of his innocence.
Being able to work is an optimistic endeavor which Bruno wholeheartedly engages in.
amp;nbsp;
amp;#9;The tragedy is not Antonio s previous two years of unemployment it is that he has no future in
his new job, due to the theft of his bike. Antonio must face this tragedy with no public support other
than his friend Baiocco. Baiocco s willingness to help with his friends and his optimistic response to
Maria constitute another case of human optimism. This form of optimism pervades the film with
Antonio s perseverance and determination to find the stolen bike. These events stimulate the viewer s
mind to think of solutions related to Antonio s situation, perhaps to try to solve problems of post war
Italy such as crime, famine, health issues, living condition, etc.; ills that have affected society then and
now around the globe.
amp;#9;Antonio s frustration of missing the thief for a second time fuels the hopelessness in
continuing his search. He attempts to forget his predicament by treating himself and his son to a meal
and a liter of wine.
The restaurant scene reflects the Italian Sunday tradition, as the more affluent families went out to

The Impact of the New Deal on the United States Essay
The Impact of the New Deal on the United States The Great Depression, an era of great poverty,
misery, and hopelessness, proved to be one of the most dreadful time periods in all of America s
history. During the Great Depression, dreams were lost and having a moderate amount of food
everyday became a difficult challenge for many. Nonetheless, through the dark clouds, appeared the
next president of the United States: Franklin Delano Roosevelt. By offering hope in his inaugural
address, Roosevelt boosted morale and despair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In later days, Congress created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in June1933. This reform
insured each bank deposited up to $2,500 a day and consequently, banks gained more trust from their
investors. As money once again started to flow, it helped stabilize the financial situation of the
country. After achieving this goal without difficulty, Roosevelt issued an executive order to create the
Farm Credit Administration. The purpose of this was to provide low interest, long term loans to
farmers. Farmers then paid off mortgages and overdue taxes, bought back lost farms, and purchased
the needed seed, fertilizer, and equipment. The outcome of this program was quite obvious; farming
would once again flourish and thus, more food available for the American people. In April, Roosevelt
asked Congress to create a similar program expect for non farming personal. Congress without
hesitation passed the Home Owners Loan Corporation. It addressed the problem to those who could
not pay off their mortgage. By 1936 it saved at least a million American families by granting them low
interest, long term mortgage loans.
Other programs established because of the New Deal, were aimed for many unemployed Americans.
Roosevelt in May of 1933 encouraged Congress to establish the Federal Emergency Relief
Administration, with half a billion dollars for relief aid to be given directly to

Tocqueville Despotism
Naela Barqawi Sociology 3020
What did Tocqueville see as the main problems facing democratic societies? Why did he think that
America showed them particularly clearly? Do you agree with him?
The main problems Tocqueville saw facing democratic societies were the danger of democratic
despotism, mass society, individualism, materialism and the excessive love for equality. The first thing
I would first like to discuss the democratic despotism. Democratic despotism is a great danger because
it can act as a tyranny. It s not so obvious as despotism by a single leader and because it s perfectly
compatible with rule by the majority. Democracy is a term indicating who is in power and despotism
is a term indicating how much power a leader has. Therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

And this belief is what motivated his deep interest in America, his visit persuaded him that America
had achieved in a peaceful and natural way almost complete equality of conditions. He said if we
understand America, we could not only understand what democracy means, but in a way even take a
look into the world s future. He wrote, I confess, that in America I saw more than America; I sought
the image of democracy itself, with its inclinations, its character, its prejudices, and its passions, in
order to learn what we have to fear or hope from its progress. (Democracy in America Volume I) He
thought he saw the outlines of a new kind of society, which would slowly become that kind of society
for the rest of the world. He saw at first hand democratized society. America became somewhat
apprehensive of what they thought. America achieved its independence and many of the French
supported America. Many Frenchmen learned their lesson when they came here and then they went
back and began. Tocqueville saw the industrial revolution the enlightenment, and the

Rebellion And Major Problems In American Popular Culture
American popular culture of the Cold War period is associated with the ideas of non conformity
among those who do not possess much power in the society. As it can be seen from the Chapter 12 in
Major Problems in American Popular Culture, the two groups associated with rebellion are
teenagers/schoolchildren and young females. Clearly, these two cases are quite different, provided the
concerns around the behaviours of school kids are mostly linked to delinquency, while young female
popular culture is often criticised for the excessive sexual liberation. Nevertheless, increased interest
in sex is also a concern for the critics of teenager popular culture, primarily, comic books that, in the
views of many, promoted violence and sexuality. However,

Making Causal Inferences In Psychology
Although many people believe that the only way to confidently make causal inferences in the
psychology world is through true experiments, I believe that observational and other quasi
experiments can be just as effective for making cause and effect conclusions. One of the cardinal rules
in psychology, of course, is that correlation does not equal causation. While this is true, I strongly
believe that when certain conditions are met, we can infer causation even with nonexperimental data. I
have learned about many of these conditions in my Advanced Research Methods textbook and
completely agree with the author s opinion on this topic. Basically, causality has a probabilistic
meaning rather than a deterministic one. When making causality ... Show more content on

With this type of perspective, I believe it is fair to make conclusions about personality as a cause of
behavior (despite the fact that we cannot manipulate a person s stable dispositions) so long as the
model investigating how a trait causes an outcome is well designed, replicated, and combined with
other kinds of evidence (pg 10).
One study that might be fair to draw causal inferences from analyzed the relationship between
explanatory style and academic achievement (pg 287). In this study, researchers found that first year
college students with optimistic explanatory styles obtained a higher GPA than students with
pessimistic explanatory styles (presumably because of greater motivation and perseverance in the face
of adversity) even after controlling for intellectual ability (with SAT scores). What makes me lean
toward a more cause effect rather than a correlational explanation is:
1.) This research is not saying that an optimistic explanatory style necessarily causes students to earn
higher GPAs, but that optimists, because of their tendency to show greater motivation and persistence
(despite times of hardship), develop strategies that are related to higher achievement. Having an

Pros And Cons Of Physical Abuse
Physical abuse includes the physical assault, battery, and sexual assault used as part of a systematic
pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. Physical abuse can
cause severe injury and even death. It often co occurs with other forms of abuse, including
psychological abuse, economic abuse, and stalking. There are a broad range of behaviours that come
under the heading of physical abuse including actions such as punching; slapping; hitting; biting;
pinching; kicking; pulling hair out; pushing; shoving; burning and strangling. It should be noted that
strangulation is the most common method of intimate partner homicide .

Seeking treatment is unlikely for a majority of people that are physically abused, and the ones who are
seeking treatment are usually under some form of legal constraint. The prevention and treatment
options for physically abused children include: enhancing positive experiences early in the
development of the parent child relationship, as well as changing how parents teach, discipline, and
attend to their children.
Evidence based interventions include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as well as video feedback
interventions and child parent psychodynamic psychotherapy; all of which specifically target anger
patterns and distorted beliefs, and offer training and/or reflection, support, and modelling that focuses
on parenting skills and expectations, as well as increasing empathy for the child by supporting the
parent s taking the child s perspective.
These forms of treatment may include training in social competence and management of daily
demands in an effort to decrease parental stress, which is a known risk factor for physical abuse.
Although these treatment and prevention strategies are to help children and parents of children who
have been abused, some of these methods can also be applied to adults who have physically

Examples Of Redemption In Beloved
There exist a vast number of novels apropos the African American slave experience within American
history, however, few capture the intensity and personal feeling that is the essence of Toni Morrison s
Beloved. Written in 1987, Beloved exemplifies a perspective of African American life that is seldom
explored: the lives of former slaves following being granted their freedom. Rather than setting her
book in the middle of the horrible slavery experience of her main character, Sethe, Morrison opts to
set this information as a flashback. Instead, her novel focuses on the woman s struggle to deal with the
inner demons of her past while attempting to build a normal life for herself and her daughter, Denver.
There are many rich and deep themes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Dr. Vishwanath Bite points out, Beloved s spirit comes to claim Sethe who struggles to make
Beloved gain full possession of her present and throw off the long, dark legacy of her past (2). Sethe is
seeking redemption from the beginning of the novel. One example of this can be seen when Denver
and Sethe attempt to communicate with the ghost. While Denver expresses displeasure in the ghost s
presence and refusal to speak with them, Sethe reminds Denver gently that Beloved was only one year
old when Sethe killed her. When Denver comments that the ghost s spell is powerful, Sethe answers,
no more powerful than the way I loved her (Morrison, 5). This is not the only time Sethe stands up for
the ghost; she also does this when Paul D visits. Upon entering, he questions Sethe as to what kind of
evil is in her house, to which Sethe answers, it s not evil, it s just sad (19). The ghost of Beloved is
clearly described as malevolent in the first lines of the book, which read, 124 was spiteful. Full of
baby s venom. The women in the house knew it and so did the children (1). What is interesting is that
Sethe refuses view the spirit as dark, venomous or evil as others do. She defends the ghost, as if to
earn redemption for loving the child she had killed in order to protect. She will not view the ghost of
her child as bad, no matter how dark or sinister its actions might

Sports Nutritional Market Executive Summary
Sports Nutritional Category – Executive Summary
Over the past 5 years the market has seen an enormous increase in the sports nutritional product
category. These products range from energy drinks and nutritional bars to diet products and nutritional
supplements, and each day new products are being introduced into the market. With nutrition and taste
being two of the most important aspects of the product, creating and maintaining products in this
category is simplified. This has become one of the most exciting new markets not only because it is
the beginning of a new wave of a product category but because the market and consumer base is large
and ready to be tapped into. The market is increasingly becoming more and more energetic, ... Show

A promising characteristic of consumers in this category is that many of them tend to prefer smaller,
trendier, and ‘cooler companies. There are lot of these consumers that would much rather give their
money to an independent/private company than to a large corporation. Companies such as Red Bull
and Odwalla have come to be some of the strongest brands in the sports nutritional category simply by
being ‘renegade brands. Because the parity of products that are in this market, success requires
building a strong brand around the product. There are not too many variables with which to work
(mostly taste and nutrition) which can cause some companies distress. This however is not a flaw but
a benefit of the category because it does allow for a strong brand building that can create strong
consumer loyalty.
After discussing the make up of the consumers of sports nutritional products and the organization of
the marketers and companies in this category, it is time to look to the future of sports nutritional
products as an industry. It seems as if each day more and more people are searching for ways in which
to live healthier and improved lives. This can be seen in the increase of consumption of health related
nutritional products. As new studies reveal important health benefits of certain foods (i.e. soy, ginseng,
calcium) there are increased outlets for integrating these foods into sports nutritional products. Women

Musical therapy is a precise, evidence based use of music to help accomplish certain goals or

What Role Did Samurai Play In Japanese Culture
Tradition played a major role in Shogunate Japan. Every role and ritual that each person took place in
had multiple traditions and meanings embedded in it. This had an enormous effect on the overall way
in which Japanese society functioned. In the following report, the role that traditions played in art,
samurai, daily life and geography during the 17th to 19th century had on Japanese society will be
explored and uncovered.
SAMURAI (WARRIORS) OF JAPAN:
The samurai held a very important role in the Tokugawa society. Tradition influenced the way in
which the samurai were able to perform during battle and their efficiency. Bushido meant the way of
the warrior. He who practised the code of bushido was expected to act honourably, faithfully ... Show

Traditional kimonos were worn by every class, except for the samurai; they wore a two piece set
called the hakama. As the Meiji Revolution was in the workings, a widespread of silkworm disease hit
Europe. As Japan was an isolated country, they were easily able to avoid this disease, produce and sell
Japanese silk at an astounding price. The traditional art of raising silkworms and spinning their threads
was recognised as the way in which Japan s new economy was able to re negotiate its imbalanced
agreements and restore its power. This is because Shogunate Japan had the advantage of silk and
silkworms over Europe and their countries. Because the material was so expensive, only the upper
classes were able to wear their kimonos made out of silk. The farmers, merchants and artisan s
kimonos were made out of cotton or hemp. As Japanese traditions revolved around religion and
philosophy, Buddhism influenced what many people ate. Meat in this religion was strongly
discouraged, so the Japanese civilization ate what they could easily get a hold on. These foods mainly
included rice, vegetables and seafood. As Shinto was practised throughout Japanese society, a culture
developed that created an appreciation towards all life in nature and arts. The contribution of daily life
in Japanese society helped gain its maximum potential. People were able to get use out of the

Introduction
Clinical trials are research based studies that are performed to determine whether a drug, device, or
medical procedure (depending on the stage of the study) is safe and effective. A complete set of trials
that would include all phases may cost hundreds of millions of dollars which is usually paid for by a
sponsor such as a government agency or a for profit company. Increasingly, clinical trial activities are
contracted out to service providers such as an academic medical center (AMC), a contract research
organization (CRO), or a physician s practice and this outsourcing requires negotiation and execution
of CTAs. Therefore, a clinical trial agreement (CTA) is required between the sponsor and the

identifier and address should appear in the agreement. The individual signing the agreement must be

Step 1: Area of law
The area of law is contract law focusing on the element of agreement.
Step 2: Principles of law
Contract law is defined as lawfully enforceable agreement between two or more people to a contract.
An agreement also known as a promise consists of an offer and an acceptance. An offer is defined as
indication of the terms upon which an individual is ready to be obligated. On the other hand, an
acceptance is the agreement of the terms that have been offered. The parties associated with the
agreement are known as an offeror or an offeree. The offeror is the one who makes the offer, and the
offeree is the one accepts the offer (Curtin College 2014).
For an offer to be satisfied, there are rules to be considered. The offer has to be complete, promissory,
intention to undergo a contract when accepted, and focused on an individual or a group. In addition,

Atheism And The Existence Of God Essay
The question of who bears the burden of proof frequently comes up in debates between theists and
atheists. In some cases, the theists claim that the atheists bear the burden of proof as it is a self evident
fact that God exists. Whereas some atheists would claim that the theists bear the burden of proof since
they are making supernatural claims. In the following essay I will be discussing both opinions on this
matter, and perhaps show how the burden of proof lies on both of them and neither of them.
I will begin this discussion by defining the recurring terms during the discussion on the existence of
God. Traditionally the three attitudes one could hold towards the existence of God are theism, atheism
and agnosticism. The belief in the existence of God or Gods, in specific of one that intervenes in the
matters of the universe is defined as theism (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). Atheism as defined
in the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (Spring 2013 Edition) refers to the negation of theism or
in other words, the denial of the existence of God. Agnosticism is referred to one the maintains that
the nothing is known of the belief of God or cannot be known (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). A
burden of proof is seen as an obligation on a party in a dispute to provide sufficient warrant for their
position (En.wikipedia.org, 2016).
In debates on this subject matter, often times when theists are asked for the basis of their belief in
God, they respond that their

Research On Information Metering And Measurement
Information Metering and Measurement
Study in information metering and measurement can be classified into smart metering, and smart
monitoring and measurement. In the following, this classification in point.
a)Smart Metering: Smart metering is the mainly important mechanism used in the Smart Grid for
obtaining information from end users devices and appliances, while also controlling the performance
of the devices. Automatic metering infrastructure (AMI) systems, which are themselves built upon
automatic meter reading (AMR) systems, are broadly regarded as a sound strategy to realize Smart
Grid. AMR is the technology of routinely collecting analytical, expenditure, and status data from
energy metering devices and transferring that data to a central database for billing, troubleshooting,
and analyzing. AMI differs from traditional AMR in that it enables two way communications with the
meter. So almost all of this information is available in real time and on demand, allowing for better
system operations and customer power demand organization.
b) Smart meters, which carry two way communications amid the meter and the central system, are like
in many aspects to
AMI meters, or occasionally are regarded as part of the AMI.
A smart meter is typically an electrical meter that records use in intervals of an hour or less and sends
that information at least every day back to the utility for monitoring and billing purposes. Also, a
smart meter has the capability to

Prosthetic Hip Dislocation And Its Effects
Prosthetic Hip Dislocation
A prosthetic hip dislocation means that your artificial hip joint (prosthesis) has moved out of place.
This can happen because of a hard, direct hit or injury (trauma) to the hip, such as a fall. A prosthetic
hip joint may be more likely to dislocate than a normal hip joint because a prosthetic hip joint does not
have all the structures that normally hold the joint in place.
After the prosthetic hip is moved back into place, you will generally recover fully. Prosthetic hip
dislocation is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.
CAUSES
This condition is often caused by trauma to the hip. Trauma may be caused by:
Falls, especially falls from a height.
Motor vehicle accidents.
Contact sports.
Industrial accidents.
RISK FACTORS
This condition is more likely to develop in:
People over 60 years of age.
People with bone loss (osteoporosis).
People who lack vitamin D.
People who are overweight or obese.
People who lack hip strength and flexibility.
People with poor vision.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of this condition include:
Severe pain in the hip area. Pain may get worse when you move or try to put weight on the hip.
Inability to move the hip.
The leg on the side of the dislocated hip appearing shorter than the other leg.
The foot on the side of the dislocated hip turning inward.
Loss of feeling in your lower leg, foot, or ankle.

Kubilai Khan s Society In The Travels By Marco Polo
In the book of The Travels by Marco Polo, he explains the smoothly working society that was put
together by Kubilai Khan. Kubilai Khan is the Great Khan of China during Marco Polo s trip to China
in 1271. A Khan is almost that of a dictator in which he decides on what the laws are and how to carry
out the activities of his society. He is an understanding, but strong willed individual who still rules
with an iron fist, and is caring at the same time. The society he built was spread throughout the nation
and worked very well for a long time. He maintained and reigned for thirty four years from 1260 to
1294. As well as his version of society worked, many people despised him many because of the

There are stations which may contain as many as forty buildings occupied by unmounted couriers,
who also play a part in the Great Khan s postal service (152), this is the main part to Kubilai s postal
system. I think his postal system was very complex and efficient for the technology of the time. He
had a station every three miles with new running couriers, so they wouldn t have to run over 3 miles at
a time. This quote shows how efficient his system was, no more than a day and a night to cover a ten
days journey (153). Not only did he have running couriers, he also had 200 horses at every post also,
and ferries to cross rivers. Another service he provided was something of what resembles crop and
livestock insurance of today. He created a system to repay and cover farmers losses in the case of an
unfortunate event. He not only paid for their losses but also gave them grain or meat to help feed the
family. But, when there was a good harvest, he bought the grain and stored it in granaries as stated

Music Piracy And Civil Law
Music piracy is an infringement that involve the copying or selling of creative works that which the
copyright owner, composer, or artist did not consent to. Before the invention of newer technology that
allowed for the piracy process to become less difficult, music piracy was much easier to control. With
this new and improved technology of the 21st century, users of the web began adding media files to
the internet, which made all previous difficulties substantially less challenging. It was much easier for
people with little to no knowledge of technology and old piracy methods to gather media files. Piracy
may seem petty, but the effects are major. Not only is it illegal, when music is copied and or shared the
value decreases with each download. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many citizens are unaware that downloading music although free is illegal and others may think of
piracy as a victimless. Individual artists, ranging from celebrity musical acts like Metallica to the stay
at home mothers who sell digital scrapbooking kits in their free time, frequently speak out against
piracy when talking to their fans. Grassroots organizations also work to educate the public about
music property rights through online marketing campaigns. Technology has given the Music
companies a fighting chance in preventing music piracy. Software programs can be created to require
authorization codes or online registration forms that make piracy more difficult because they are only
given with legal copies. For downloadable content, digital rights management systems limit the
number of devices that can play a particular movie or song in order to stop people from sharing
unauthorized copies. Unfortunately, there are still resourceful hackers and people in the piracy
industry that still continue to find ways to get around these measures. Lawsuits may seem like an
obvious way to stop piracy, but legal action is typically a last resort with the widespread use of the
Internet, it is way too time consuming and expensive to track down every web site and person that is
involved in the production and sharing of illegal music files. Piracy laws also vary from country to
country, making enforcement rather

Elvis: Satisfying the Expectations Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in a small, two
room ranch in Tupelo, Mississippi. His parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley, lost Elvis s twin brother,
Jessie Garon, at birth, leaving Elvis an only child. Elvis and his parents moved to Memphis,
Tennessee, in 1948, in which he attended Humes High School for 5 years. Shortly after his graduation
in 1953, Elvis began his extraordinary singing career with the renowned Sun Records Label. In 1955,

His magnetism extended so far that Colonel Parker saw an opportunity to use his Pretty Face on the

The people who loved Elvis for his charisma and uniqueness felt as though he was pulling away and
selling out to the mainstream media expectations. Eventually, Elvis maturing persona was recognized
nationwide, particularly by the film director Norman Taurog, who saw opportunity in a more
professional Elvis, who did more than just shake his hips and pick a guitar. Taurog was recorded
saying to Elvis, Whatever change you re going through, keep going. You finally came of age. From
this single quote, we can see what Elvis business associates and the public expected of him, a man
with a bigger burden to carry. Elvis was extremely self conscious when it came to satisfying the
expectations of others. He payed close attention to how people perceived him, and Taurog s awareness
of his expanding maturity was very important to Elvis. While Elvis knew that the music industry had

Siddhartha Gautama Was A Great Leader
Siddhartha Gautama was the son of a king, pampered like a prince who abandoned the life of desire to
pursue Enlightenment. When I lived in Nepal, I went to school and studied Buddhism. There I learned
about his life and the philosophies he kept in practices. Also, I learned that he was a great leader, and
his great ideas such as the Four Noble Truths, Eightfold path, Nirvana, fundamental wisdoms, the
theory of karma and rebirth, the five precepts and Wheel of Dharma has influenced many people. I
learned about his great achievement and how he was able to create a whole new religion, which is now
known as the fourth largest religion in the world, by influencing people through his practices and
philosophy. From this experience, I learned firsthand that he is a great religious leader who left a
legacy not just on Nepalese culture, but on the whole world.
The founder of Buddhism was a man named Siddhartha Gautama. He was born in Nepal, just where I

Sustainable Design Of Green Logistics Management
Sustainable Design of Green Logistics Management in China
Based on sustainable development of green logistics in China and the countermeasures (2007), China
is especially vulnerable to climate change due to its complex climatic conditions, a fragile ecological
environment, a massive population and frequent natural disasters. Insufficient per ca pita resources
and very sharp contradictions between development and environment force China to further develop a
cycling economy. Green logistics is an important tool for sustainable development.
However, logistics in China is in its infant period. Hence, there are some problems, for example,
immediate economic benefits to the enterprise and ecological and social benefits faced, which results
in negative environmental issues in China. It is worth noting that there is a need for the sustainable
logistics system ,inhibiting cause harmful to the environment while forming a modern logistics system
that can promote economic. There must be a combination of sustainable development and logistics
applying the principles of sustainability in green logistics. Nevertheless, there are still many people
who are not aware of green logistics and even suspect the necessity of establishment of green logistics.

Aberdeen s Influence on Kurt Cobain
The towns of Hoquiam and Aberdeen are located on the eastern edge of Grays Harbor in western
Washington state. If you are a fan of the band Nirvana, you have probably heard of these names. If
not, you are about to read how a town affected a person who in turn affected many people s lives.
Kurt Cobain was the singer and guitarist for Nirvana. He was born in Hoquiam (population 9,000) and
after six months of life moved to Aberdeen (pop. 16,500), an old lumber town at the eastern most
point of Grays Harbor. The town is about four miles wide and three miles long. On the northern and

The town also became the end of a railroad line because of the lumber companies. Prostitution
prospered with as many as fifty whorehouses in the downtown area. Prostitution was around until the
late fifties when the police finally ended it. (Azerrad 12) The lumber boom slacked off a few years ago
as the economy fell and available lands were depleted. Now people are worried that the Northwestern
logging industry will not be able to recover and Aberdeen is marked for a slow ugly death. (Gilmore

According to Kenn Oberrecht, Aberdeen s name is from a city in Scotland. The name is Gaelic and
means the meeting of two rivers. Aberdeen, in case you do not know, is at the joining of the Chehalis
and Wishkah rivers. It is about one hundred miles south west of Seattle and 48 miles west southwest
of Olympia. (164) The first sawmill was built in 1884 and the shipbuilding industry prospered until
the 1920 s.
If there is a single attractive thing about Aberdeen, it would be the 98 square miles of surrounding
estuaries, tidelands, and marshes that attract shorebirds by the hundreds of thousands. They come
every April and May to rest and feed for the long trip north to their arctic and subarctic nesting areas.

In the context of small to medium enterprises, statistics show that about half of new businesses fail
within five years (Anderson 2014). The reasons for why new businesses fail have been a number of
reasons. Some of them are due to high interest rates, taxes, and lack of bank lending (Anderson 2014).

Although there has been branding research that was presented by Aaker and Keller, many SMEs, in
the apparel manufacturer brand segment, are not aware of these principles.
There are two ways in which brands can represent themselves. They are manufacturer brand or own
brand. Manufacturer brand is based upon the idea that a manufacturer of a product sells the product
under it s own name. Own label brand is when the private label brand is not the producer of the
product, but is bought from a manufacturer and sold by the brand at a cheaper price. In terms of
manufacturer brands in SME brand strategy, there is much competition with own brand labels in terms
of market share (Oubinam Rubio, and Yague 2006). With the competition of own brand label and
corporate companies taking market share, there is much fascinating research to be done on brand
equity of a company in the SME s perspective.
Justification of Study
Gap and area in need of further research
There has been little research on brand equity in SME apparel brands. It is easier to research brand
strategy on a corporate company that is already successful, and so little knowledge is added on
emerging companies or SMEs who are struggling to stay competitive in the fashion apparel industry.
This research would add knowledge to the best SME s brand strategy in the young women s
contemporary market. The value of corporate branding

Colonial New Zealand desired a utopian Arcadia, in other words New Zealand was sought to be a new

3d Printing History
Its One thing to 3D print something as advanced and cutting edge as a Jet engine motor, but it is
another to fuel it up, take it to the runway and push the start button. This is the stride GE aviation
achieved when it fired up the motor of a simple Jet engine, made completely of in house designed and

leading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial,
military, business and general aviation aircraft propulsion applications. GE Aviation has a global
service network to support these offerings. 3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of
making three dimensional solid objects from a digital design. The creation of a 3D printed object is
achieved using additive processes. In an additive process the desired object is created by laying down
successive layers of material (usually molten alloy or plastics) until the entire object is formed. Each
of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross section of the eventual object. ... Show

Pros And Cons Of Death Punishment
In terms of the death penalty, certain crimes do deserve this punishment, under specific circumstances.
Heinous crimes, such as the murder of the 1st and 2nd degree and rape, should be punishable by death.
However, this punishment shall only occur so long as the criminal(s) pass both the M Naghten Rule
and the Durham Rule. In the gruesome murders of the Clutters family, Perry Edward Smith and
Richard Eugene Hitchcock were both deemed perfectly sane under both rules, showing that both men
deserved the death penalty. Although there is plenty of proof that Hitchcock was sane, there is also
enough evidence to prove that Smith was mentally unstable. Due to this evidence, Hitchcock
rightfully got what he deserved, while Smith was wrongfully done. According to Cornell Law School,
the M Naghten Rule is when a defendant is claimed to be innocent when at the time of committing the
act, the accused was laboring under such a defect of reason, from disease of the mind, as not to know
the nature and quality of the act he was doing or, if he did know it, that he did not know what he was
doing was wrong ( Insanity Defense ). In Layman s terms, an accused is deemed innocent if he/she
does not know right from wrong and/or does not know what he/she is doing at the time of the crime.
In regards to Richard Hitchcock, he is not protected under this said rule. Proof that Hitchcock knew
what he was doing and knew it was wrong is expressed in C J Lewis article of Hitchcock v. State. His

In this case, it appears that Madoff had many friends and family members who were involved in the
fraud. Speculate about how likely it is that Madoff s own sons, who were employees of the firm, knew
nothing of the fraud as they stated.
Madoff s sons were highly suspected of being aware of the fraud, but they both adamantly denied this,
and charges were never brought because one son killed himself while the other died of cancer. A
federal investigation was on the cusp of charging the son who died of cancer with tax evasion
resulting from the Ponzi scheme before his death this year it was reported.
4. Explain the ethical issues that are associated with running a family owned business. Are these issues
present within Madoff s firm?
Ethical issues associated with running a family owned business, is a lack of checks and balances,
because of familial ties. In Bernie Madoffs case, many of the primary people in the business were
family members such as his chief compliance officer, which is supposed to reassure investors that
everything is as it should be. Madoff s chief compliance officer was his niece, Shana Madoff. In
addition, she had married a former employee of the US Securities and Exchange Commission who had

Business Communication Is Different in Pakistan Compared...
Business Communication is different in Pakistan compared to western countries
Communication is any behaviour, verbal or nonverbal, that is perceived by another. (Dwyer 2006)
business communications are purposive interchanges of ideas, opinions, information, instructions and
the like, presented personally or impersonally by symbol or signal as to attain the goods of
organization. (Rosenblatt, Cheatham Watt 1992) Today, the organization is growing more complex and
the business is growing larger, because of this, the communication is necessary for passing
information between people working in the same organization, it provides the critical link between
core functions. As Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School has said, In ... Show more

System policies greatly show the communication differences in it.
Take an example of university culture in both countries. FAST s students call their professors with Sir/
Mam /Professor while University of Arkansas s students call their professors simply with their last
names. This was a simple example depicting difference in university culture and relation of business
communication with organization s culture and country s system.
 Direction of communication in most of the organizations in Pakistan ( especially public sector) is
mostly downwards, the mechanism of feedback and innovation of new ideas is restricted to only few
organizations. While in USA the direction of communication is mostly both ways. For example
different surveys, feedback tests and reports are conducted in business organizations
monthly/annually.
 In oral communication, both Pakistan and USA have informal rumours and one to one discussions.
But group discussions are more common and preferred in west.
 Written communication has greatly been revolutionized by the advancement in technology
computerization. The public sector organizations in Pakistan are still working in old paper work style,
while some of the organizations have computerised there business environments for communication.
While western countries are far ahead in using technology for business communication.
 Email is a very formal way of

Seasons And Symbolism In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
For centuries, seasons have been understood to stand for the same set of meanings. Seasons are easily
understood by the reader, and are easy for the writer to use; as Foster states, Seasons can work magic
on us, and writers can work magic with seasons (Foster 192). The different seasons are a huge part of
our lives; we live through each one every year, and we know how each of them impacts our lives. This
closeness between people and nature allows us to be greatly impacted by the use of seasons in
literature. In addition, Foster lays out the basic meanings of each season for us: autumn is harvest,
decline, tiredness; winter is anger, hatred, cold, old age; summer is passion, love, happiness, beauty;
and spring is childhood and youth. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The monster, for example, is devastated after he loses his only connection to humanity: Felix and
Agatha. After observing them for months, learning how to speak, being their secret helper by stocking
their shed with food or shoveling snow, and after dreaming of how he would introduce himself to
them someday, his connection with them was lost after Felix found him speaking to his blind
grandfather in the cottage. When they all leave, the monster burns down the cottage and sets out to
find Victor, in hopes of asking him to create another specimen; one that the monster can spend his life
with in perfect harmony. When he finds Victor and tells him about his life and journey, he tells him,
when the earth finally started to warm up, I even raised my humid eyes with thankfulness towards the
blessed sun which bestowed such joy upon me (Shelly 125). Although the monster was terribly
depressed, the sun (which is associated with spring and summer; it is meant to bring happiness and
tranquility) lit up the Earth, bringing back its beauty after winter, which had caused the monster to feel
gall and bitterness...rage and misery (Shelly 124). The beauty that the sun bestows on the Earth offers
as a distraction for the monster rather than dwelling upon his gruesome appearance, he admires the
world around him. As Foster explained, winter in literature brings with it misery, and summer brings
happiness,

What Caused The Seven Year War
The Seven Year War going from 1756 to 1763, was the first global war, which starts in North America
and spreads to Europe and all around the world. It begins when Britain declares war on France.
Imperial rivals, France and Britain struggled for supremacy. Early in the war, The French (helped by
Canadian militia and Aboriginal allies) defeated a number of British attacks and captured several
British forts. This war laid the bicultural foundations of modern Canada.
The Seven Year War was caused by ongoing tension between Great Britain and France. Also, Russian
and Austrian fears of Prussia s growing power in Europe. It ended up to further colonial supremacy for
Great Britain and much acknowledgment of Prussia as a major European power. Prussia

  • 2. The Bicycle Thief Essay example amp;#9;Another fine example of neorealism is The Bicycle Thief (1948), written by Cesare Zavattini and directed by Vittorio De Sica. The narrative of this film unfolds in post W.W.II times. The film is a portrait of the post war Italian disadvantaged class (the majority) in their search for self respect. It is a time of struggle for the Italian people, amplified by a shortage of employment and lack of social services. In the first scenes of the film, these conditions are evident as Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorami) meets his spouse Maria (Lianalla Carell) on his way back home. We see the quot;men quot; arguing at the employment quot;office quot; as the quot;women quot; argue about the shortage of water. Although the director s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... amp;#9;Self respect and all the related values such as pride, dignity, modesty and honor are very important in Italian society. Witness Bruno, whom at a young age, works full time at a gas station. Bruno s contributions to the Ricci family make him a quot;man quot; and strip him of his innocence. Being able to work is an optimistic endeavor which Bruno wholeheartedly engages in. amp;nbsp; amp;#9;The tragedy is not Antonio s previous two years of unemployment it is that he has no future in his new job, due to the theft of his bike. Antonio must face this tragedy with no public support other than his friend Baiocco. Baiocco s willingness to help with his friends and his optimistic response to Maria constitute another case of human optimism. This form of optimism pervades the film with Antonio s perseverance and determination to find the stolen bike. The Impact of the New Deal on the United States Essay The Impact of the New Deal on the United States The Great Depression, an era of great poverty, misery, and hopelessness, proved to be one of the most dreadful time periods in all of America s history. This reform insured each bank deposited up to $2,500 a day and consequently, banks gained more trust from their investors. As money once again started to flow, it helped stabilize the financial situation of the country. After achieving this goal without difficulty, Roosevelt issued an executive order to create the Farm Credit Administration. The purpose of this was to provide low interest, long term loans to farmers. Farmers then paid off mortgages and overdue taxes, bought back lost farms, and purchased the needed seed, fertilizer, and equipment. The outcome of this program was quite obvious; farming would once again flourish and thus, more food available for the American people. In April, Roosevelt asked Congress to create a similar program expect for non farming personal. Congress without hesitation passed the Home Owners Loan Corporation. It addressed the problem to those who could not pay off their mortgage. By 1936 it saved at least a million American families by granting them low interest, long term mortgage loans. • 4. Tocqueville Despotism Naela Barqawi Sociology 3020 What did Tocqueville see as the main problems facing democratic societies? Why did he think that America showed them particularly clearly? Do you agree with him? The main problems Tocqueville saw facing democratic societies were the danger of democratic despotism, mass society, individualism, materialism and the excessive love for equality. The first thing I would first like to discuss the democratic despotism. Democratic despotism is a great danger because it can act as a tyranny. It s not so obvious as despotism by a single leader and because it s perfectly compatible with rule by the majority. He wrote, I confess, that in America I saw more than America; I sought the image of democracy itself, with its inclinations, its character, its prejudices, and its passions, in order to learn what we have to fear or hope from its progress. (Democracy in America Volume I) He thought he saw the outlines of a new kind of society, which would slowly become that kind of society for the rest of the world. As it can be seen from the Chapter 12 in Major Problems in American Popular Culture, the two groups associated with rebellion are teenagers/schoolchildren and young females. Clearly, these two cases are quite different, provided the concerns around the behaviours of school kids are mostly linked to delinquency, while young female popular culture is often criticised for the excessive sexual liberation. Making Causal Inferences In Psychology Although many people believe that the only way to confidently make causal inferences in the psychology world is through true experiments, I believe that observational and other quasi experiments can be just as effective for making cause and effect conclusions. One of the cardinal rules in psychology, of course, is that correlation does not equal causation. While this is true, I strongly believe that when certain conditions are met, we can infer causation even with nonexperimental data. I have learned about many of these conditions in my Advanced Research Methods textbook and completely agree with the author s opinion on this topic. Basically, causality has a probabilistic meaning rather than a deterministic one. When making causality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this type of perspective, I believe it is fair to make conclusions about personality as a cause of behavior (despite the fact that we cannot manipulate a person s stable dispositions) so long as the model investigating how a trait causes an outcome is well designed, replicated, and combined with other kinds of evidence (pg 10). One study that might be fair to draw causal inferences from analyzed the relationship between explanatory style and academic achievement (pg 287). In this study, researchers found that first year college students with optimistic explanatory styles obtained a higher GPA than students with pessimistic explanatory styles (presumably because of greater motivation and perseverance in the face of adversity) even after controlling for intellectual ability (with SAT scores). What makes me lean toward a more cause effect rather than a correlational explanation is: 1.) This research is not saying that an optimistic explanatory style necessarily causes students to earn higher GPAs, but that optimists, because of their tendency to show greater motivation and persistence (despite times of hardship), develop strategies that are related to higher achievement. Examples Of Redemption In Beloved There exist a vast number of novels apropos the African American slave experience within American history, however, few capture the intensity and personal feeling that is the essence of Toni Morrison s Beloved. Written in 1987, Beloved exemplifies a perspective of African American life that is seldom explored: the lives of former slaves following being granted their freedom. Rather than setting her book in the middle of the horrible slavery experience of her main character, Sethe, Morrison opts to set this information as a flashback. While Denver expresses displeasure in the ghost s presence and refusal to speak with them, Sethe reminds Denver gently that Beloved was only one year old when Sethe killed her. When Denver comments that the ghost s spell is powerful, Sethe answers, no more powerful than the way I loved her (Morrison, 5). In some cases, the theists claim that the atheists bear the burden of proof as it is a self evident fact that God exists. Whereas some atheists would claim that the theists bear the burden of proof since they are making supernatural claims. In the following essay I will be discussing both opinions on this matter, and perhaps show how the burden of proof lies on both of them and neither of them. I will begin this discussion by defining the recurring terms during the discussion on the existence of God. Traditionally the three attitudes one could hold towards the existence of God are theism, atheism and agnosticism. The belief in the existence of God or Gods, in specific of one that intervenes in the matters of the universe is defined as theism (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). Atheism as defined in the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (Spring 2013 Edition) refers to the negation of theism or in other words, the denial of the existence of God. Agnosticism is referred to one the maintains that the nothing is known of the belief of God or cannot be known (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). A burden of proof is seen as an obligation on a party in a dispute to provide sufficient warrant for their position (En.wikipedia.org, 2016). Grassroots organizations also work to educate the public about music property rights through online marketing campaigns. Technology has given the Music companies a fighting chance in preventing music piracy. Software programs can be created to require authorization codes or online registration forms that make piracy more difficult because they are only given with legal copies. For downloadable content, digital rights management systems limit the number of devices that can play a particular movie or song in order to stop people from sharing unauthorized copies. In the gruesome murders of the Clutters family, Perry Edward Smith and Richard Eugene Hitchcock were both deemed perfectly sane under both rules, showing that both men deserved the death penalty.
