Nike International Business and Trade Unit
Case Study: Nike, Inc. International Business and Trade Unit
1. Company Ethics: Nike Inc. in Cooperation with its suppliers
Many global companies like Nike, Inc. are seen as role models both in the market place as well as in
society in large. That is why they are expected to act responsibly in their dealings with humanity and
the natural world. Nike benefits from the global sourcing opportunities, therefore areas such as
production and logistics have been outsourced to partner companies in low wage countries like China,
Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. As a result the company is limited nowadays to its core
competencies of Design and Marketing.
Nike does not merely sell products these days. They spend billions of dollars for ... Show more

Special attention should also be paid to the factor of stress. The workers have to deal with two
different forms of stress. On the one hand they suffer under the high pressure and frequently abusive
work environments and on the other hand the stress which is forced by their supervisors if they do not
for example manage to produce the expected quality standards.
1.1.2 Working Hours
The offense against the observance of working hours points out another example of the inhumane
labor conditions at Nikes manufactures. The Code of Conduct foresees a weekly work load of 60
hours. In addition all workers have the right to one day off a week. Further conditions are set down in
local employment laws. Overtime hours should only be disposed if necessary and workers have to be
remunerated for that. Many suppliers have thus reduced the number of overtime hours so that they
confirm to the Code of Conduct. However, workers must now complete the required number of units
in a shorter amount of time in order to satisfy the sporting goods manufacturers production schedule.
Workers complained about increased stress caused by tightened production schedules and new
production system introduced by management to offset the reduction in working hours. The reduction
of working hours which at first appeared advantageous has apparently turned into a detriment for
workers.
1.1.3 Remuneration
Another example of the inhumane conditions in the Nike factories is the low wages. A

The Reconstruction In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
After an extended period of the Civil War and the Reconstruction, William Faulkner published his
short story A Rose for Emily in 1930. In his fictional Jefferson, Mississippi (the county seat of
Yoknapatawpha), Faulkner tells a story about Emily, an unhappy woman. The story begins at Emily s
funeral, and all the villagers in the town come to see the inside of the abandoned building (nobody has
entered the house for at least ten years). The story flashes back decades before the funeral, Emily s
father dies, and she is left alone. Therefore, the town minister decides to exempt the tax for Emily.
Later, when the new generation grows up, they do not accept the old rule anymore. They start to ask
Emily for tax, but she refuses to pay it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A statistic shows that by summer of 1863, in New Bern, N.C., only 20 of the 250 white people
remaining in town were men (Abbott). In a depletion of man, the appearance of Homer Barron is like
a light to Emily s heart. She does not mind about Homer s origin, as long as she has a man whom can
live with her. However, it is not easy to own a man in this period. Abbott states that widowed women
in their 30s faced stiff competition for available men in their age group and suffered constant
reminders of their grim odds (Abbott). This fact explains Emily s action of poisoning her lover,
Homer. She wants to keep him beside her forever. Killing Homer is the only way, she can get him
away from all other women and do not lose him. Due to the effect of war on men, Emily is trying to
fight over her destiny to own a man for herself, but she seems to go too far with it.
Besides the desire of love, Emily also faces varies difficulty because of the ending of Civil War. Emily
s first problem is when the town minister begins to ask her to pay the taxes. Emily has not had to deal
anything with tax since her father died. However, the town no longer accepts the allowance of the old
minister to Emily. The town is trying to get into new and develop life. According to historian Charles
Wilson on his article Religion and the US South, [after the Civil War,] although most southerners
continued to farm, live in rural areas and small towns and adapt many of their

Andrew Carnegie s Rhetoric In The Gospel Of Wealth
Andrew Carnegie s rhetoric in the Gospel of Wealth, challenged the economic disparities in the United
States during the late 1800s by proposing a radical shift in the distribution of wealth as a solution to
social improvement without understanding that poverty was not a personality deficit rather the result
of oppression. Carnegie exemplified his philosophy and achieved the American Dream, yet he
neglected that he was the exception to the rule, not the rule in itself. The Gospel of Wealth had too
many assumptions, both with merit and not, when proposing how the distribution of wealth could
alleviate economic hardships to the impoverished population without understanding the complexities
of the working class.
In order to understand Carnegie s assumptions about the working class, one must first learn how he
overcame his poor upbringing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social workers realized that their efforts, condescended to the poor and failed to recognize that
poverty came mostly from social conditions rather than individual defects (Diner 194). Charities were
no longer a prominent source of helping the poor and social workers began to see that systemic
changes needed to occur. Carnegie s philanthropic desire to create public institutions like parks,
libraries, and museums highlighted the importance of developing an education. Access to knowledge
and resources provided a way for the working class to strive for better economic opportunities.
Although this concept is of utmost in merit, by not truly understanding the morality behind the
working class, Carnegie overlooked the oppression that many faced because of Social Darwinism and
the idea that the wealth, power, and greed should be monopolized by the few ( Gospel of

The Problem Of Racial Profiling
Twists of Humanity
Has one ever sit down and thought about the use of racial profiling in our country today? Many
individuals have a role in racial profiling and do not realize it. Racial profiling is using one s race or
ethnicity against them as a foundation of suspecting someone to committing an offense of some sort.
For example, racial profilers could say that Pit Bulls are more likely to bite than any other breeds of
dogs, and to keep this from happening, all Pit Bulls should be euthanized. Of course, like all breeds of
dogs, some Pit Bulls may bite, but not all of them deserve the punishment of being euthanized. The
main problem with racial profiling is that innocent individuals are targeted due to past cases with their
race. This leads to 36 year old Shoshana Hebshi, who is half Jewish and half Arab. She was targeted
on a plane in Detroit due to her race. Although Shoshana Hebshi was targeted through racial profiling,
the use of iron triangles saved Shoshana from unlawful accusations.
On September 11, 2011, Shoshana Hebshi was travelling on the Frontier Airlines that landed in Detroit
when her and two Indian American men were targeted by federal agents who entered the plane and
demanded them to exit. Shoshana was handcuffed, pushed down steps, and into a vehicle (Warikoo,
2013). Shoshana was later retained in a cell, ordered to strip bare, squat, and cough while the officers
checked her over (Warikoo, 2013). Hebshi stated, I was frightened and humiliated (Warikoo,

Analysis of The Spectacular Spider-Man and The Fairly Odd...
Mass media is a microsystem that influence on a person s values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. Mass
media is a form of communication that is viewed by large audiences through medium such as TV,
newspaper, book, and internet. Television is the most influential form of media and the way it has
impacted on children s lives. The two children television show that I will be discussing is The
Spectacular Spider Man and The Fairly OddParents. We will look at it content and the hidden message
that these two television show is conveying to young children.
In the Spectacular Spider Man, the episode Group Therapy show started out with the villains trying to
escape from prison and planning to take down Spider Man. Peter who is Spider Man is wearing a
black spider suit rather than his regular red spider suit to fight off the vicious villains. The black spider
suit has taken over his body and had fought with the villains the night before. When he wakes up in
the morning he felt his whole body aching but cannot remember why. Upon from waking up, he read
on the morning news paper that Spider Man has taken down the villain last night. Even though he was
the one fighting the villain he has no memory of the fight. The episode end when one of Peter s co
workers knocks at his door and let him knows that his Grandma May is in the hospital because of a
heart attack.
From watching the episode of Spectacular Spider Man I noticed that there was a lot of violent and
negative messages/treatment.

Applications Of Low Power Integrated Intelligent Sensors
Applications of low power integrated intelligent sensors [1 5] has been prolific in recent years, for
instance in environmental observation [8 10], security surveillance [11] and infrastructure
communication [12], and biomedical and healthcare monitoring [6, 7]. In particular, as the baby
boomers enter retirement, medical cost becomes significant. For example, in 2014, health care
accounted for 20% of federal spending in the U.S. []. A major problem in current healthcare systems is
that sensing and processing medical data require significant resources. In order to alleviate this
problem, wearable medical devices are expected to provide automatic monitoring and processing of
physiology signals, and more importantly, identifying abnormal signals and contact medical systems
for help if necessary, as shown in Fig. 1. Although such sensors usually have wireless data
communication capability through body area network, due to limited battery power supply, sending
raw sensed data is usually not an option. This is because that in a wireless sensor, usually radio
communication power is much higher than signal processing power []. Thus, it is expected that the
sensors are capable of providing preprocessing of raw data based on DSP algorithms and just sending
the processed results. Such sensors are called intelligent sensors []. Besides the capability of signal
processing and wireless communication, low power, high accuracy, high reliability, and small
footprint are also listed as

From the respondents, 23 were female staff, and 55 male staff.
Of those surveyed, the food services department had 32 employees complete the survey, the
housekeeping department had 36 employees complete the survey, and the maintenance department
responded with 10 completed surveys. The employees answered questions regarding their working
conditions, hours worked, training, compensation, treatment, communication, and security. The results
of the survey are disappointing to the management at BIMS as the response was only 17.3% of their
employees expressing how they feel about the company, and jobs. The initial survey indicated that
most of the DMC employees were very unhappy with their current position, their salary, and their
work experience at BIMS. With this, the hypothesis for the initial survey is that the results are skewed
based upon a lack of input from employees. For BIMS to fully understand the higher than normal
turnover rate at this particular facility, additional data will need to be collected.
As BIMS initial survey process resulted in such a dismal return rate it left the management staff
asking more questions than it has resolved. Debbie Horner, human resources manager realized the
flaw in the employee survey and believed additional data was pertinent to BIMS success in lowering
turn over rates and set about designing a

that there is blood clotting in the patient s eye this can result in the patient becoming blind. A leg ulcer

because the patient may think is just a normal scratch or cut. Leg ulcers usually are the result of poor
blood circulation to that particular area. Delayed growth usually occurs in most or all patients with
Sickle Cell. Another problem that sickle cell patients may have to face is organ failures. The organs

How Social Media Has Become A Trusted Means Of Information...
Social media consist of two words. Social refers to communication among individual or group of
people. Media which means to advertise and communicate ideas or information through newspapers,
magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet.
Social media is a means of connecting people together through social network. It started in 1978
during the first bulletin board system was exchanged over phone with other users. When internet took
off, consumers started to voice out their encounters with products and services, and turn down their
carefully drafting out messages (Evan 2008). Through social media, conversations began to springs up
about product, services, brands and companies, these conversations helped inspired consumers on
what to buy, what they subscribe to and what they feel is valuable more than any marketing message.
Social media has become a trusted means of information better than traditional method. Social media
refers to reliable conversation between persons about a particular topic of interest, built on suggestion
or individual experiences (Evan 2008). It is about sharing and aiming at a particular goal in order to

Strange Death of Silas Deane
The Strange Death of Silas Deane by James West Davison and Mark Hamilton Lytle creates a new
perspective on what people see history as. Although many people would define history as something
that happened in the past, through The Strange Death of Silas Deane , the authors demonstrate that this
everyday view on history can be profoundly misleading.
In the section, An Untimely Death , the author explains the key events of Deane s life and his death.
Silas Deane began his life as the son of a humble blacksmith in Groton, Connecticut (16). He went
from rags to riches as he graduated from Yale College and opened up a practice. Deane married,

decision to go to the war, some would place the distinction of bravery on Cross. He, however, felt like
a coward. For he had given in to the society around him and their pressures. Instead of following his
heart and staying true to his morals, Cross took the easy way out. By fighting in the war, he avoided
the criticism and ridicule which marred draft dodgers and the lifetime of embarrassment that was sure

The first surgical robot was called the Arthrobot, developed and used for the first time in 1983 in

was in collaboration with an orthopedic surgeon by the name of Dr. Brian Day. There was even a

time, other medical robots were developed including a robotic arm that performed eye surgery and
another that acted as an operating assistant by handing surgeons instruments by responding to voice

using CT guidance. The use for different robots began growing more and more as the years moved on.
This now seemed to be the standard and the future of the medical field. In 1988, Imperial College

and in 1992 another robot called Robodoc, designed and developed by Integrated Surgical Systems
was used to mill out fittings in the femur (the largest bone in the human body) for hip replacements.
As you can see the beginning of surgical robotics was a very busy time in several different
developments. In ten years, these developments and different robots have come a long way. The
beginning robots open new doors in the medical profession from developers all the way to the doctors.
After 1992 further development

Gulf Oil Spill Research Paper
Introduction The Gulf Oil Spill was one of the worst oil spills in US History. It took place on April 20,
2010. It happened about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana, in the Gulf Of Mexico, and by the
Deepwater Horizon. About 672, 000 gallons (3.19 million barrels) of oil was dropped into the ocean.
Common names for it include: the Louisiana Oil Spill, Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, and BP Oil Spill.
How It Happened There are four main reasons as to why this oil spill happened, but they were all
mechanical flaws. One reason was that the borehole (a hole at the bottom of the boat used to locate oil
and gas) was not completely covered with cement which allowed the oil to leak out of the boat.
Another reason was that the boat contained two main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were the ones who dropped the oil into the ocean when they were out on the ocean. Even though

We Prevent Oil Spills Oil spills do not just happen because of boats and system failure. They also
happen because of us doing everyday things like heating our house. Most people use oil or gas to heat
their house since it is a heat substance, it could leak and cause a spill on land. How do we prevent it
though? Companies have to be very careful with their parts. They have to check that everything is in
place and working correctly. One mistake could cause an oil spill. They also have to make sure that
their tanks are cleaned out. The tanks have to be cleaned once in a while because if they aren t, then
the tank might burst letting the oil spill out. The worst thing about oil spills is that small mistakes lead
to big consequences. For example, the BP Oil Spill, small failures in the system like the alarm let the
oil all spill out before the company realized it was leaking. Just because of that, one of the biggest oil
spills in the world

Types Of Alternate Dispute Resolutions
A traditional judicial process such as litigation is a settlement of an agreement between the parties
involved in a dispute that is heard and decided by the judge and a jury in court. Due to the rising costs
of litigation and time delays, businesspersons are turning to alternate dispute resolutions as a way to
come to an agreement. Many states and corporations have been experimenting with ADR programs
and have found it to be a great alternate. Three types of alternate dispute resolutions are negotiation,
mediation, and arbitration. Roger LeRoy Miller, author of Business Law Today stated that, Today,
more than 90 percent of cases are settled before trial through some form of ADR (84). Each process is
used differently amongst parties and each has its own benefits. Alternate dispute resolutions tend to
have lower costs and the process is much shorter. The use of alternate dispute resolutions is growing at
a fast rate because many businesses and corporations find it to be an easier way to come to a
settlement. Although alternate dispute resolutions have been recognized for their advantages its still
important not to overlook the disadvantages of each.
Generally, the simplest form of alternate dispute resolution is negotiation. Negotiation allows the
parties to meet informally with or without their attorney s present to settle their dispute. This process
does not require a neutral third party to be at the meeting because the parties reach a resolution on
their own terms.

The Use Of The Essence Of Nature In Elizabeth Bishop s...
In Little Exercise by Elizabeth Bishop, Bishop uses the structure and the rhyme scheme to make
contrasts towards the essence of nature. She contrasts the ambient and passive character of nature with
the destructive and war like character of nature. When showing the ambient and passive characteristics
of nature, Bishop writes, Think of someone sleeping in the bottom of a row boat... think of him as
uninjured, barely disturbed . This quote shows the ambient essence of nature by describing the
sleeping person as uninjured and barely disturbed. When showing the destructive and war like
characteristics of nature, Bishop writes, Now the storm goes away again in a series of small, badly lit

China River Valley
Agricultural societies dominated China by 5000 BCE everywhere east of the Wei River Valley all the
way to the North China Plain. Millet was grown away from the forrest in areas with enough water and
people domesticated dogs, pigs, and chickens. They still, however, relied on hunting for game and
gathering plants for food. The people lived in groups of one room houses made of earth with clay or
thatch roofs. They knitted fibers with the help of spinning wheels and decorated pottery with art. Since
the Yellow River flooded worse than the Yangze River, farming was much easier in the south. It was

The people in the area surrounding the Shang civilization were seen as barbaric savages. Because of
this, the emperor, Zhouxin, was waging a war against the tribal people living south east to his empire.
The people he had conquered who lived in the Wei River Valley, called the Zhou, took advantage of
this and started rebellions and overthrew him at the battle of Mu ye in 1045 BCE. The Zhou were
pastoral people who gained alliences with the other tribes who the Shang thought of as barbarians.
When the Zhou came to power, they claimed to be the sons of gods and therefore ruled all the land
and its people. They claimed to have taken the Shang rulers out of heaven by the command of the
supreme god called The Lord on High The Zhou claimed to be representing what the god had planned
for the land they ruled and any opposition to their rule was blasphemous and against god. Since the
land was so vast, Zhou divided his land into regions and gave each allied tribal chief a region to rule.
The region leaders, called lords, had full control over the region and each one had their own army to
use. The title of lord was hereditary and was passed down through generations. This caused a
hierarchy in families to develop with older sons being ranked higher than younger ones. The Lords
also had priest roles and had the power to preform sacrifices to local gods and dictate

Sudden Cardiac Death Essay
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of big medical challenges that threaten our life and it is left over
very tragic memories among family s members(Adabag et al., 2010). Clinically, it is firstly associated
with stopping the activity of cardiac muscular tissue, thereafter turning off the blood pump and finally
permanent damage of brain tissue(Go et al., 2014). Despite the lack of having a clear definition of
SCD, the most acceptable description is that the sudden cardiac death is unexpected death that can be
happened within 60 minutes from the symptoms being appeared and approved by witnesses, or it may
be occurred during a period of 24 hours in a person who has clearly been found in a healthy condition
when the death is not witnessed(Uchmanowicz et al., 2015). According the definition above, around
35 40% of the total cases of SCD are happened out of hospital which is namely known, Out of
hospital sudden cardiac death (OHSCD((Basso et al., 2010). Cardiac arrhythmia resulted from
myocardial infarction is classified to be the most important causes leading to the OHSCD. However,

Unfortunately, no published data were found regarding to the incidence of OHSCD over Arab
countries. However, these variations in the incidence of OHSCD can be attributed to the many
potential factors. Divergence of the non modifiable risk factors (sex, age, causes of death, and genetic
factors) are seen among populations. Another factor for such variations can be due to the differences
in modifiable factors like socio economic status, residency (urban or rural), smoking, and
obesity(Müller Nordhorn et al.,

Political Leaders During The War
Political leaders were also put to the test during the war. Many African Americans worked closely with
the government to both rally black support for the war and to help battle against issues such as
lynching and segregation. For example, Emmett Scott, the former secretary to to Booker T.
Washington at the Tuskegee Institute, was able to organize a conference for black newspaper editors
and political leaders in Washington, D.C. in June 1918. This conference yielded positive results. The
attendees declared their loyalty to the government. Although World War I affect people of all

Descriptive Essay On Toy Car
As I currently stare into this inanimate object I recognize one single thing. This object this Corvette
has one flaw to me. The hood of the car in the front it does not line up completely straight, it s kind of
curved around. I say that because in over the decade that I have received this personal possession, I
have never noticed that specific physical feature on this vehicle. I always tend to look for flaws when I
see something and then I look for the positives. And that is what people usually look for when they see
a car or a collectable item. The sheer resemblance of the model car to the actual one is uncanny as it
should be, from the smallest of detail. The bumps and texture on the steering wheel, the flags on the
logo in the front of the car, and the placement of the wheels and how they creativity designed and
aligned they are just help me attest to that. Now with that being said this toy Corvette has been in
family for over forty years. So minding the physical features, there is a lot of sentimental value of this
vehicle that outweighs my opinion on the actual price of this toy car, but to a certain extent.
My grandfather in the mid nineteen seventies came in to collection of around sixty toy cars over the
course of a few years. He was an avid collector during his youth and into his middle age. But when he
got older he gave me possession of at least thirty of the toy cars as a sentimental gift. I always valued
when he gave us his personal collectibles because I

An Account of the Rosewood Incident
After the reconstruction period there was high tension between the whites and blacks in the south.
Whites wanted nothing to do with black people and didn t want to have to share anything with them.
Whites did everything they could to intimidate blacks to keep them in their place . Black people
wanted nothing but to live their lives with their new found freedom, but they saw that no matter what
the law said they would never be accepted by the white community. White people often acted out in
violence towards blacks whatever chance they got to drive them out. Anything a black person did
could result in violence. An example of the violence and hatred shown towards blacks is the events of
an incident in Rosewood, Florida in 1923. This incident was documented and the accounts of blacks
who were children at the time were taken down.
In 1923 in the town of Rosewood, Florida a white woman named Fannie Taylor who had been having
an affair was beaten one afternoon while her husband was at work by her lover. Mrs. Taylor had a
woman come by to help her with household duties named Sarah Carrier, she saw the man who
attacked Mrs. Taylor as did some of her black neighbors. Mrs. Taylor cried for help, when someone
came to her aid and asked who it was that did that to her out of fear she said it was a black man. Her
accusation that it was a black man caused hunt for this man throughout the town. A man named Jesse

Scopes Monkey Trial Research Paper
The aftermath of the Great war and the Great Depression brought on a dramatic social change in
America in the 1920s. The social change was a revolution that brought on two fundamentally different
beings; modernists and fundamentalists. While fundamentalists valued the bible, and lived by it in its
entirety, modernists were more self conscious and favored creativity and common sense rather than
the bible. The divide had to come head when the controversial Scopes Monkey Trial began and new
theories were explored which were then applied in modernist art, literature, and the way of thinking.

Albert Einstein, famed psychist, offered scientific research that startled fundamentalists and excited
modernists. The huge influence the reject God was largely responsible of famed psychist, Albert
Einstein. His contributions in science left individuals unsure about the past and curious about the
future. Einstein theorized that space, time, matter, and energy were not distinct (Shi and Tindall 799).
His research left many to embrace the idea that there were no absolute standards or fixed points of
reference in the world (Shi and Tindall 799) . What was once said that God created all was questioned
with Einstein s research. Another man s research in psychoanalysis questioned the morals and the way
that people carried out their lives in the 1920s. Sigmund Freud, a psychoanalyst from Europe, heavily
influenced Americans because of his teachings about sex and behavior. Freud believed that the mind
was essentially and mysteriously conflicted by often unconscious efforts to control or repress powerful
irrational impulses or sexual desires (Shi and Tindall 799). His work gave life a deeper meaning and
influenced sexual liberation. Writers expressed their art through dreams and imaginations. The new
revelations bought on by Einstein and Freud changed the way of life for both modernists and
fundamentalists. Modernists applied the news ideas by applying them into their life by expressing
themselves through art, rejecting the bible, and imagine about the unknown. Fundamentalists stuck to
traditional values and believed in God. The new revelations weren t enough for fundamentalists to

How Far Had the Bolsheviks Created a Totalitarian State ...
A totalitarian state, is a where the central government of a state does not tolerate any parties with
opposing views and exercises complete dictatorial rule over all or most aspects of life. Lenin, the
leader of the Bolsheviks, took many measures in an attempt to create a totalitarian state, including the
dissolution of Constituent Assembly, the use of decrees and the establishment of a secret police group
called the Cheka. However there were also some ways in which he failed to achieve full
totalitarianism. The most basic characteristics of a Totalitarian state, are lack of free speech and state
control over the media. This is important to establish social control over the state. Lenin s described

The creation of the secret police and the establishment of the gulags and labour camps, are signs that
Lenin had created a successful totalitarian state, and could assert physical control over the people. The
introduction of War Communism during the Russian Civil War, is evidence of Russian moving
towards a Totalitarian State. Many aspects of War communism were totalitarian in nature. For instance
the creation of a Supreme Economic Council, formed to take complete control over the Russian
highlights the central control over the most vital aspect of the state, that the Bolsheviks enforced.
Other measures include the requisitioning of excess grain from the Peasants. Many of these policies
were met with opposition, particularly among the agricultural peasants. This opposition was in turn
met with brutal force, which was another example of the nature of complete state authority. War
communism continued on until the end of the Civil war, by which time the Bolshevik forces had
succeeded in crushing all opposition. The success of the red forces meant that Russia was a step closer
in becoming a Totalitarian state, as they were now the most powerful party in Russia, with complete
control over all its territory. Upon the creation of the USSR, Lenin introduced new rule that would
ensure greater totalitarian control. Only communists would be able to stand for the soviets, and so this
meant that the communist party had the true control over the

Nationalism Is Inherently Expnsionist
Nationalism is inherently aggressive and expansionist. Discuss Nationalism is a political ideology
based on the principle that a group of people bound by common values (a nation), have the right to
form a state. Because it is a doctrine as opposed to an ideology, nationalism is compatible with various
opposing political beliefs. This means that there are many forms of nationalism based on both how to
define a nation, and the ideas of different political ideologies. In this essay I will discuss whether each
of these are inherently aggressive and expansionist. Firstly, a nation can be defined by ethnicity and
culture. This is the belief behind ethno cultural nationalism. Ethno cultural nationalism gives a very
crude and simplistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It therefore believes that every nation is equal, and no nation should interfere with the ruling of
another nation. Liberal nationalism encourages a neutral body (such as the UN or League of Nations)
to settle disputes between nations. This means that Liberal nationalism is inherently peaceful and not
in any way expansionist. Another example is Conservative nationalism, which applies key
Conservative features such as tradition, hierarchy and a pessimistic view of human nature, to
nationalism. It uses nationalism as a method of preserving society s structure. Conservative
nationalists view the nation as delicate and organic, which must be preserved. They therefore believe
in limited immigration into a nation, to prevent new ideas and cultures being brought into the nation.
This makes Conservative nationalism quite exclusive, which could lead to conflict. Conservative
nationalism is often very patriotic, for example in the USA. This can sometimes lead to aggressive and
expansionist policies. Conservative nationalism is also associated very much with imperialism. For
example during the 19th century, Britain, France, Russia and Germany all used nationalism to justify
their imperial expansionism. I therefore believe that Conservative nationalism is inherently aggressive
and expansionist. The final type of Nationalism I will look at is Expansionist nationalism. As the name
suggests, this form of nationalism is inherently

The Election Of The Conservative Party Leadership
What, if anything, was new about Thatcherism? The ballot for the Conservative Party Leadership on
February 1975 was a turning point for the History of late 20th century politics in England. The figure
of Margaret Thatcher had emerged surprisingly as the new Party leader against the incumbent Edward
Heath. Thatcher s importance does not only lies on she being the first woman to lead the Conservative
Party, but on the ideas and statecraft that later gave life to a new concept Thatcherism that marked
British politics during her 11 years in command and managed to influence the future of England s

She also wanted to make Britain a competitive trading nation. Furthermore, she took the ideas of the
Scottish political economist Adam Smith, whom she considered the most important theorist of free

national good towards exterior goods. Thatcher wanted to embrace free trade as this would encourage
producers and traders. Finally it would stimulate competitiveness and innovation, creating greater

Rising Us Unemployment and the Canadian Dollar
Is there a relationship between rising US unemployment and the rise of the Canadian dollar?
Canada s financial stability depends on the health of America s economy, as international trade
accounts for 45% of Canada s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 79% of exports are to the United
States. Canadian and American unemployment rates are positively correlated for that reason, as
exemplified in early 2009. Canada s unemployment rate quickly steepened as the United States rate
gradually increased to about 10% (refer to graph 1 and 2). During this time, Canada s growing trade
surplus became a deficit in only a few months (refer to graph 3). From this data, one can determine
that Canada s exports decreased rapidly due to rising economic ... Show more content on

If consumer spending and exports decrease, Canada s economy can decline simultaneously with the
American economy. As mentioned above, international trade accounts for 45% of Canada s GDP. On
April 1, 2011, the loonie hit a three year high after U.S. employment increased and the jobless rate
decreased. The dollar increase from a decrease in U.S. unemployment exemplifies America and
Canada s trading partnership and coinciding economies.
The strength of the U.S. economy is important for Canada s trade, economy and exchange rate.
Increasing U.S. unemployment can positively or negatively influence the value of the loonie. Canada s
dollar can increase due to demand from buyers looking to invest in a stable economy with low risk.
On the other hand, Canada s GDP is dependent on U.S. trade. If less Americans are purchasing goods
in Canada due to increased unemployment, the Canadian dollar will fall. Therefore, it is inconclusive
that unemployment rates solely influence the rise of the Canadian dollar. There are many other factors
that influence the exchange rate, such as commodity prices, investor confidence, overvalued currency
and inflation rates.

The Causes And Impacts Of British Petroleum
On April 20, 2010, British Petroleum s (BP) offshore drilling rig, the Deepwater Horizon, exploded
and caused the largest accidental marine oil spill in history, discharging five million barrels of oil into
the ocean over a period of three months. During this accident, eleven men working on the oil rig
perished and seventeen others were injured severely. This crisis caused major destruction to marine
wildlife caused economic harm on fishing and tourism industries and was a public relations nightmare
for British Petroleum (Crandall, Parnell Spillan, 2013). This event was horrendous; I remember the
devastation that was left in the wake of this tragedy.
Beginning in the 1980 s, offshore oil production showed to be a solution for the United States energy
issues and national security. In the beginning, the wells were in shallow water, but once these wells
were dry, drilling in the deeper water began. Although there were drawbacks, such as the difficulty to
drill and operate a well at such tremendous depths and because of these depths robots would have to
troubleshoot maintenance problems instead of humans. Additionally, in deep waters, special drilling
rigs are needed. There are two types of drilling rigs, the drillship, and the semi submersible. The
Deepwater Horizon was a semi submersible rig that was used to excavate the well on the Macondo
slope in the Gulf of Mexico. Once the excavation was done, another rig would arrive to extract the oil.

Coming of Age in The Man Who was Almost a Man by Richard...
The Man Who Was Almost a Man
What does it mean for someone to become a man? How does one get the key or password to becoming
a man? Some believe that becoming a man is just referring to a coming of age, and it somewhat is,
however there is more. In the short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man by Richard white, Dave,
the main character is a young boy trying to become a man and is searching for the key. However, there
are certain ways to do things in society, and there are ways to not, and both of these ways have their
benefits and consequences. In this short story Dave sees the gun as a symbol of manhood, and it will
set him free of his childhood.
Throughout the short story the reader can tell that Dave is eager to leave his childhood ... Show more

Dave still shows thoughts pertaining to the attainable manliness of having a gun by thoughts of
shooting at Mr. Hawkins s house. It seems as if Dave s thoughts are blurred and all he sees is the key
to becoming a man is having a gun and using it so he is doing this as much as he can along with his
crave for power, even though it is just causing others to have even less respect for a reckless
irresponsible child with a gun. However, Dave s wishes were still granted when he is forced to start
maturing into being a man more rapidly than others and having to take responsibility for his actions.
Every choice has its benefits and its consequences, unluckily, with Dave s choices the consequences
greatly outweighed the benefits that were being received. Dave had the wrong idea and believed that a
gun could symbolize becoming a man whenever all it actually did is rush him into something that he is
not ready for, and cause him to do wrong in the eyes of his family and the society. Back to the
question, What does it mean for someone to become a man? One could say that Dave eventually
learned his lesson by the end of the short story that you cannot push respect upon yourself by others
with force. Becoming a man is by definition when a person with the qualities often associated with
males such as bravery, spirit, or toughness grows out of their childhood and matures into adulthood.

Consequences of Losing The Sense of Touch
Consequences of Losing The Sense of Touch
Touch is the first sense we experience in the womb and may also be the last we experience before
death. To understand the consequences of losing the sense of touch we must first understand its
benefits. Touch is an important element of how we understand and relate to our world. Touch can
convey personal feeling towards one another or it can convey danger such as heat or sharp surfaces.
The inability to feel sensations on the ski impacts many different situations and can potentially have
dangerous repercussions. Our ability to survive is not generally dependent on our sense of smell or our
sense of taste. However, if one does not possess the sense of touch, it can directly imperil our very
existence.
The consequences for a loss of the ability to process pain would be numerous and catastrophic. Pain is
your body s way of telling you something is wrong. Pain s job is to draw your attention to sensations
such as a burn or a bone break so that you can address the cause of the issue. For instance, if you
sprained your ankle, without pain receptors your body would have no way of alarming you of the
danger. This situation could require you to tear something resulting in a major injury instead of a
minor sprain which would take a couple weeks to heal. People born without pain receptors are much
more prone to serious accidents resulting in injury or death. Without pain you may not receive an early
warning of infections that could

The Current State Of Health Care System Essay
Introduction The current state of United States health care system is one of the most polarizing
subjects of debate among scholars and other health care professionals across the globe. This can be
attributed to the fact that at one extreme end, there are some who argue that that Americans have the
best system of health care in the world (MePhee, 2013). Perhaps the availability of the state of the art
facilities and free medical technology that have become highly symbolic of the various industries in
the United States have motivated the idea of the country s health care system being unparalleled to
others. However, there is a common belief that the fight for universal health care can only be
successful if its current state of health care is described as a failure in the modern era as emphasized
by MePhee (2013). As a matter of fact Wise and Yashiro, 2006 assert that there some individuals who
describe the America s system as being fragmented and inefficient, considering the staggering
statistics regarding how Americans spend more on health care compared to other countries in the
world. Additionally, they suffer from massive insurance costs and uneven quality of care, and thus
understanding the debate about the two diametrically opposed viewpoints requires an in depth
understanding of the current health care issues in the United States (Rashidian, Joudaki, Vian,
Baradaran, 2012). Essentially, this paper will identify one common health care issue, particularly
health care

That is why they are expected to act responsibly in their dealings with humanity and the natural world. Nike benefits from the global sourcing opportunities, therefore areas such as production and logistics have been outsourced to partner companies in low wage countries like China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. On the one hand they suffer under the high pressure and frequently abusive work environments and on the other hand the stress which is forced by their supervisors if they do not for example manage to produce the expected quality standards. 1.1.2 Working Hours The offense against the observance of working hours points out another example of the inhumane labor conditions at Nikes manufactures. The Code of Conduct foresees a weekly work load of 60 hours. In addition all workers have the right to one day off a week. Further conditions are set down in local employment laws. Overtime hours should only be disposed if necessary and workers have to be remunerated for that. Many suppliers have thus reduced the number of overtime hours so that they confirm to the Code of Conduct. However, workers must now complete the required number of units in a shorter amount of time in order to satisfy the sporting goods manufacturers production schedule. Workers complained about increased stress caused by tightened production schedules and new production system introduced by management to offset the reduction in working hours. The reduction of working hours which at first appeared advantageous has apparently turned into a detriment for workers. 1.1.3 Remuneration Another example of the inhumane conditions in the Nike factories is the low wages. In his fictional Jefferson, Mississippi (the county seat of Yoknapatawpha), Faulkner tells a story about Emily, an unhappy woman. The story begins at Emily s funeral, and all the villagers in the town come to see the inside of the abandoned building (nobody has entered the house for at least ten years). The story flashes back decades before the funeral, Emily s father dies, and she is left alone. Therefore, the town minister decides to exempt the tax for Emily. A statistic shows that by summer of 1863, in New Bern, N.C., only 20 of the 250 white people remaining in town were men (Abbott). In a depletion of man, the appearance of Homer Barron is like a light to Emily s heart. She does not mind about Homer s origin, as long as she has a man whom can live with her. However, it is not easy to own a man in this period. Abbott states that widowed women in their 30s faced stiff competition for available men in their age group and suffered constant reminders of their grim odds (Abbott). This fact explains Emily s action of poisoning her lover, Homer. She wants to keep him beside her forever. Killing Homer is the only way, she can get him away from all other women and do not lose him. Due to the effect of war on men, Emily is trying to fight over her destiny to own a man for herself, but she seems to go too far with it. Besides the desire of love, Emily also faces varies difficulty because of the ending of Civil War. Emily s first problem is when the town minister begins to ask her to pay the taxes. Emily has not had to deal anything with tax since her father died. However, the town no longer accepts the allowance of the old minister to Emily. The town is trying to get into new and develop life. • 5. Andrew Carnegie s Rhetoric In The Gospel Of Wealth Andrew Carnegie s rhetoric in the Gospel of Wealth, challenged the economic disparities in the United States during the late 1800s by proposing a radical shift in the distribution of wealth as a solution to social improvement without understanding that poverty was not a personality deficit rather the result of oppression. Carnegie exemplified his philosophy and achieved the American Dream, yet he neglected that he was the exception to the rule, not the rule in itself. The Gospel of Wealth had too many assumptions, both with merit and not, when proposing how the distribution of wealth could alleviate economic hardships to the impoverished population without understanding the complexities of the working class. In order to understand Carnegie s assumptions about the working class, one must first learn how he overcame his poor upbringing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carnegie s philanthropic desire to create public institutions like parks, libraries, and museums highlighted the importance of developing an education. Access to knowledge and resources provided a way for the working class to strive for better economic opportunities. • 6. The Problem Of Racial Profiling Twists of Humanity Has one ever sit down and thought about the use of racial profiling in our country today? Many individuals have a role in racial profiling and do not realize it. Racial profiling is using one s race or ethnicity against them as a foundation of suspecting someone to committing an offense of some sort. For example, racial profilers could say that Pit Bulls are more likely to bite than any other breeds of dogs, and to keep this from happening, all Pit Bulls should be euthanized. Of course, like all breeds of dogs, some Pit Bulls may bite, but not all of them deserve the punishment of being euthanized. The main problem with racial profiling is that innocent individuals are targeted due to past cases with their race. This leads to 36 year old Shoshana Hebshi, who is half Jewish and half Arab. She was targeted on a plane in Detroit due to her race. Although Shoshana Hebshi was targeted through racial profiling, the use of iron triangles saved Shoshana from unlawful accusations. On September 11, 2011, Shoshana Hebshi was travelling on the Frontier Airlines that landed in Detroit when her and two Indian American men were targeted by federal agents who entered the plane and demanded them to exit. Shoshana was handcuffed, pushed down steps, and into a vehicle (Warikoo, 2013). Shoshana was later retained in a cell, ordered to strip bare, squat, and cough while the officers checked her over (Warikoo, 2013). Hebshi stated, I was frightened and humiliated (Warikoo, ... • 9. Applications Of Low Power Integrated Intelligent Sensors Applications of low power integrated intelligent sensors [1 5] has been prolific in recent years, for instance in environmental observation [8 10], security surveillance [11] and infrastructure communication [12], and biomedical and healthcare monitoring [6, 7]. In particular, as the baby boomers enter retirement, medical cost becomes significant. For example, in 2014, health care accounted for 20% of federal spending in the U.S. []. A major problem in current healthcare systems is that sensing and processing medical data require significant resources. In order to alleviate this problem, wearable medical devices are expected to provide automatic monitoring and processing of physiology signals, and more importantly, identifying abnormal signals and contact medical systems for help if necessary, as shown in Fig. 1. Although such sensors usually have wireless data communication capability through body area network, due to limited battery power supply, sending raw sensed data is usually not an option. This is because that in a wireless sensor, usually radio communication power is much higher than signal processing power []. Thus, it is expected that the sensors are capable of providing preprocessing of raw data based on DSP algorithms and just sending the processed results. Such sensors are called intelligent sensors []. Besides the capability of signal processing and wireless communication, low power, high accuracy, high reliability, and small footprint are also listed as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The employees answered questions regarding their working conditions, hours worked, training, compensation, treatment, communication, and security. The results of the survey are disappointing to the management at BIMS as the response was only 17.3% of their employees expressing how they feel about the company, and jobs. The initial survey indicated that most of the DMC employees were very unhappy with their current position, their salary, and their work experience at BIMS. With this, the hypothesis for the initial survey is that the results are skewed based upon a lack of input from employees. For BIMS to fully understand the higher than normal turnover rate at this particular facility, additional data will need to be collected. As BIMS initial survey process resulted in such a dismal return rate it left the management staff asking more questions than it has resolved. Most people use oil or gas to heat their house since it is a heat substance, it could leak and cause a spill on land. How do we prevent it though? Companies have to be very careful with their parts. They have to check that everything is in place and working correctly. One mistake could cause an oil spill. They also have to make sure that their tanks are cleaned out. The tanks have to be cleaned once in a while because if they aren t, then the tank might burst letting the oil spill out. • 22. Types Of Alternate Dispute Resolutions A traditional judicial process such as litigation is a settlement of an agreement between the parties involved in a dispute that is heard and decided by the judge and a jury in court. Due to the rising costs of litigation and time delays, businesspersons are turning to alternate dispute resolutions as a way to come to an agreement. Many states and corporations have been experimenting with ADR programs and have found it to be a great alternate. Three types of alternate dispute resolutions are negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Roger LeRoy Miller, author of Business Law Today stated that, Today, more than 90 percent of cases are settled before trial through some form of ADR (84). Each process is used differently amongst parties and each has its own benefits. Alternate dispute resolutions tend to have lower costs and the process is much shorter. The use of alternate dispute resolutions is growing at a fast rate because many businesses and corporations find it to be an easier way to come to a settlement. Although alternate dispute resolutions have been recognized for their advantages its still important not to overlook the disadvantages of each. Generally, the simplest form of alternate dispute resolution is negotiation. Negotiation allows the parties to meet informally with or without their attorney s present to settle their dispute. This process does not require a neutral third party to be at the meeting because the parties reach a resolution on their own terms. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sudden Cardiac Death Essay Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of big medical challenges that threaten our life and it is left over very tragic memories among family s members(Adabag et al., 2010). The hood of the car in the front it does not line up completely straight, it s kind of curved around. I say that because in over the decade that I have received this personal possession, I have never noticed that specific physical feature on this vehicle. I always tend to look for flaws when I see something and then I look for the positives. And that is what people usually look for when they see a car or a collectable item. The sheer resemblance of the model car to the actual one is uncanny as it should be, from the smallest of detail. The bumps and texture on the steering wheel, the flags on the logo in the front of the car, and the placement of the wheels and how they creativity designed and aligned they are just help me attest to that. Now with that being said this toy Corvette has been in family for over forty years. So minding the physical features, there is a lot of sentimental value of this vehicle that outweighs my opinion on the actual price of this toy car, but to a certain extent. My grandfather in the mid nineteen seventies came in to collection of around sixty toy cars over the course of a few years. He was an avid collector during his youth and into his middle age. • 28. An Account of the Rosewood Incident After the reconstruction period there was high tension between the whites and blacks in the south. Whites wanted nothing to do with black people and didn t want to have to share anything with them. Whites did everything they could to intimidate blacks to keep them in their place . Black people wanted nothing but to live their lives with their new found freedom, but they saw that no matter what the law said they would never be accepted by the white community. White people often acted out in violence towards blacks whatever chance they got to drive them out. Anything a black person did could result in violence. An example of the violence and hatred shown towards blacks is the events of an incident in Rosewood, Florida in 1923. This incident was documented and the accounts of blacks who were children at the time were taken down. The introduction of War Communism during the Russian Civil War, is evidence of Russian moving towards a Totalitarian State. Many aspects of War communism were totalitarian in nature. For instance the creation of a Supreme Economic Council, formed to take complete control over the Russian highlights the central control over the most vital aspect of the state, that the Bolsheviks enforced. Other measures include the requisitioning of excess grain from the Peasants. Many of these policies were met with opposition, particularly among the agricultural peasants. This opposition was in turn met with brutal force, which was another example of the nature of complete state authority. War communism continued on until the end of the Civil war, by which time the Bolshevik forces had succeeded in crushing all opposition. The success of the red forces meant that Russia was a step closer in becoming a Totalitarian state, as they were now the most powerful party in Russia, with complete control over all its territory. • 37. Nationalism Is Inherently Expnsionist Nationalism is inherently aggressive and expansionist. Discuss Nationalism is a political ideology based on the principle that a group of people bound by common values (a nation), have the right to form a state. Because it is a doctrine as opposed to an ideology, nationalism is compatible with various opposing political beliefs. This means that there are many forms of nationalism based on both how to define a nation, and the ideas of different political ideologies. In this essay I will discuss whether each of these are inherently aggressive and expansionist. Firstly, a nation can be defined by ethnicity and culture. It therefore believes that every nation is equal, and no nation should interfere with the ruling of another nation. Liberal nationalism encourages a neutral body (such as the UN or League of Nations) to settle disputes between nations. This means that Liberal nationalism is inherently peaceful and not in any way expansionist. Another example is Conservative nationalism, which applies key Conservative features such as tradition, hierarchy and a pessimistic view of human nature, to nationalism. It uses nationalism as a method of preserving society s structure. Conservative nationalists view the nation as delicate and organic, which must be preserved. They therefore believe in limited immigration into a nation, to prevent new ideas and cultures being brought into the nation. This makes Conservative nationalism quite exclusive, which could lead to conflict. Conservative nationalism is often very patriotic, for example in the USA. This can sometimes lead to aggressive and expansionist policies. Conservative nationalism is also associated very much with imperialism. For example during the 19th century, Britain, France, Russia and Germany all used nationalism to justify their imperial expansionism. I therefore believe that Conservative nationalism is inherently aggressive and expansionist. The final type of Nationalism I will look at is Expansionist nationalism. Canadian and American unemployment rates are positively correlated for that reason, as exemplified in early 2009. Canada s unemployment rate quickly steepened as the United States rate gradually increased to about 10% (refer to graph 1 and 2). If consumer spending and exports decrease, Canada s economy can decline simultaneously with the American economy. As mentioned above, international trade accounts for 45% of Canada s GDP. On April 1, 2011, the loonie hit a three year high after U.S. employment increased and the jobless rate decreased. The dollar increase from a decrease in U.S. unemployment exemplifies America and Canada s trading partnership and coinciding economies. The strength of the U.S. economy is important for Canada s trade, economy and exchange rate. Increasing U.S. unemployment can positively or negatively influence the value of the loonie. Canada s dollar can increase due to demand from buyers looking to invest in a stable economy with low risk. On the other hand, Canada s GDP is dependent on U.S. trade. If less Americans are purchasing goods in Canada due to increased unemployment, the Canadian dollar will fall. Therefore, it is inconclusive that unemployment rates solely influence the rise of the Canadian dollar. To understand the consequences of losing the sense of touch we must first understand its benefits. Touch is an important element of how we understand and relate to our world. Touch can convey personal feeling towards one another or it can convey danger such as heat or sharp surfaces. The inability to feel sensations on the ski impacts many different situations and can potentially have dangerous repercussions. • 44. The Current State Of Health Care System Essay Introduction The current state of United States health care system is one of the most polarizing subjects of debate among scholars and other health care professionals across the globe. This can be attributed to the fact that at one extreme end, there are some who argue that that Americans have the best system of health care in the world (MePhee, 2013). Perhaps the availability of the state of the art facilities and free medical technology that have become highly symbolic of the various industries in the United States have motivated the idea of the country s health care system being unparalleled to others. However, there is a common belief that the fight for universal health care can only be successful if its current state of health care is described as a failure in the modern era as emphasized by MePhee (2013). As a matter of fact Wise and Yashiro, 2006 assert that there some individuals who describe the America s system as being fragmented and inefficient, considering the staggering statistics regarding how Americans spend more on health care compared to other countries in the world.
