Breast Health Care at Magee Women International
Intro
As an intern with Magee Womancare International (MWI), the international humanitarian outreach
arm of Magee Womens Hospital, my primary goal was to provide breast health education to
underserved African Americans and Latino women throughout the Pittsburgh area, to navigate and
support these women through the breast health continuum of care, and to facilitate clinical and
mammography screenings through the Breast Health Equity and Circulos de Amigas programs. As
a male intern, my role in this program was to engage local and predominantly male led grassroots
organizations and religious groups in breast health education to promote healthy families and
ultimately healthy and safe communities. I was also required to assist my fellow undergraduate
intern Maddie with her work in the programing and execution of the South Asia Youth Summit (aka
SAYS) program. In addition I was expected to assist my Suporvisiors with grant writing and
miscellaneous task regarding running our several ongoing current grant initiatives. By the end of
my internship at Magee Womencare International I developed a much more fundamental and in
depth understanding of MWI s history, goals and objectives, the concrete steps involved in
successful grant writing and the concrete steps involved in successful event planning among a
plethora of other things. ...

Charles Dickens Biography
He is living proof of childhood corruption and portrays himself as his young, mischievous, and
perplexed characters Oliver Twist and David Copperfield. He proves that he is a product of the
Victorian era as he brings attention to the childhood cruelty, the less fortunate in an English society,
and the unwealthy dysfunctional families of the early Victorian time period. Charles Dickens
reflects these and other issues as he brings to life the realism of writing. While others were writing
about the way things should be, rather than the way things were, Dickens was challenging these
ideas, and argued that paupers and criminals were not evil at birth. This was an act of rebellion, for
he in fact was showing the Victorian middle class generation... Show more content on

In the Victorian era, poverty became due to many reasons; a population increase, the search of
employment, and a depressing state of the shortage of housing. All of these points had a direct
impact to why there was the less fortunate in an English society. The nineteenth century saw a
huge growth in the population of Great Britain, and this brought the poverty line lower and lower
in cities such as London. Dickens, being affected by this, had a great impact on helping the less
fortunate in the Victorian time period by bringing to life the realism of the problems that the
paupers, criminals, and just plain poor people had. He did this through showing how the wealthy
treated the poor with no respect and with cruelty through his characters such as Mr. Bumble and
Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver Twist. Although, Dickens brings attention to how not all upper or
middle class people were always cruel to the poor, through his characters in Oliver Twist such as
Mr. Sowerberry, who was quite kind to Oliver and was uneasy about being cross with him. Along
with poverty being such an issue, there were also the unwealthy dysfunctional families of the
Victorian time period.
Charles Dickens grew up in a home where money was never a concern, until his father went
bankrupt and he was abandoned by his family which ultimately led to Dickens being a poor
orphaned boy. Dickens s dysfunctional family must have led to such families as

When Cultures Collide
Management, and the ability to lead and cultivate a team of individuals who strive to meet targets,
work hard, and have loyalty to their company is an extremely difficult task by any standards. It
requires a unique kind of person who is both demanding and rewarding, who can handle
confrontation and who holds people to reasonable standards while encouraging teamwork and
cooperation. This alone makes running a company, and finding upper and middle managers to
facilitate plans and goals a worthy task, but with the advent of fast paced globalization, companies
are now having to handle not only their internal managementstyles, but the management styles of a
variety of different countries and cultures.

Social Impact Of The Agricultural Revolution And The...
Introduction
The Industrial Revolution began in the late 18th and 19th centuries and was a period of significant
economic development marked by the introduction of power driven machinery. Much like the
Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution began to take shape in Britain and then spread
to other countries. During the Industrial Revolution, many power driven machines were invented,
which replaced hand tools.
Social impacts
The Industrial Revolution increased the material wealth of the Western world. It also ended the
dominance of agriculture and initiated significant social change. During the 17 and 18 hundreds the
Agricultural revolution took place, which was a period of significant agricultural development.

The working class made up 80% of society. Since population was increasing in Great Britain at
the same time that landowners were enclosing common village lands. This resulted in a very high
unemployment rate for workers in the first phases of the Industrial Revolution. Desperate for
work, the working class had no bargaining power to demand higher wages, fairer work hours, or
better working conditions. Worse still, since only wealthy people in Great Britain were eligible to
vote, workers could not use the democratic political system to fight for rights and reforms.
Economic Effects
In pre industrial times skilled craftsmen would work from traditional locations in the home and
small workshops, this was known as the cottage industry. When the Industrial Revolution begun,
machines, such as the steam engines were invented, to power large scale factories, the cottage
industry system could not keep up with the demand of goods. Therefore more people were forced
to seek employment in cities. With the majority of the population on unstable jobs or on the verge
of unemployment, the working class became completely dependent on the employer. Virtually
slaves to the employer or factory owner.

The Hispanic market in particular is the fastest growing group of people in the United States,
and being able to successfully advertise to them is key in seeing a business succeed. The current
market size for the Hispanic population makes up 17 percent of the United States Total
population, this is around 53 million people as of 2012. In fact, the United States has the second
largest group of Hispanics in the world behind Mexico. This staggering percentage is predicted to
grow to around 128.8 million people or 31% of the United States by the year 2060. To keep up
with the growing population.
When marketing towards a target demographic, a company needs to look at where the most
people of that demographic reside. The top ten biggest states for the Hispanic Population are:
California, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, North Carolina, Colorado, New York, New Mexico
and Arizona. Marketing efforts need to be directed in these states first and foremost to get the most
bang for your buck in terms of the target demographic seeing it.
Marketing Objectives
According to the Miller marketing division, it has a few main areas of focus for its advertising,
before any advertising is done they need to see who is drinking what, after that, sales are looked at
and reports are made to see where and what buyers are buying. They then research the actual
buyers. Finally,

Unraveling The Enigma Of Christopher Mccandless
Unraveling the Enigma of Christopher McCandless Throughout the novel, Into the Wild, Jon
Krakauer sincerely disentangles the haunting enigma of Chris McCandless. By tracing the places,
people and experiences intertwined in the life of McCandless, Krakauer narrates the life story of a
puzzling corpse found in a bus buried in the Alaskan frontier in a truly authentic way of storytelling.
Although Krakauer inserts direct quotes from people who McCandless came into direct contact
with and experts from primary source journals, Krakauer s own voice in the narration of the dead
man s life is trustworthy due to the similarities the protagonist and the author share. Common
connections such as similar paternal stress made outstanding impacts in both men s lives, starting at
a young age. Furthermore, a sort of agitation with the soul ailed Krakauer and McCandless fueled
by a reckless persona confined in the modern world. Lastly, a craving for human contact when in
total isolation troubled both the author and subject in their adventures narrowed in the natural
world. The mutual bond apparent to the reader between Krakauer and McCandless makes the
writing in the novel sincere enabling Krakauer to speak of a dead s man life with profound
authority and truth. Unconditional understanding through shared paternal issues, agitation of the
soul, and need for human contact grants Krakauer access to divulge into the conundrum of Chis
McCandless and authority to earnestly narrate the mysterious

Obese People In Australia
Past
The percentage of overweight and obese children in Australia, despite rapid increases in the
1980s and the first half of the 1990s, have remained mostly steady for the past 10 years, with 23
to 24% of Australians under the age of 18 classified as overweight, and 5 to 6% of the same
demographic classified as obese. Through time Australia s number in people suffering obesity has
increased dramatically from 56.3% in 1995 to 61.2% in 2007 08. Compared to 1995, the
proportion of Australians that were overweight in 2015 has fallen by 6%.
Obesity varies within age with 74.9% of people aged 65 74 years being overweight or obese,

An essay on different genres including the Ghost genre...
An essay on different genres including the Ghost genre and the Fantasy
Adventure genre
I have chosen two completely different genres to base my essay on.
Firstly, I have the mysterious and gripping Ghost Genre; the books I have studied are The Woman
in Black , The Langoliers and the spooky film, The Others . The second genre is Fantasy Adventure.
The book
I am studying is Lirael , a recent book written by Australian author
Garth Nix. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring , directed by Peter Jackson is the
film that I am analysing.
There are many, definite trends to ghost stories, no matter what the novel is about. They are all
usually set in remote areas and are about haunting. Death is usually common ... Show more content

In the ghost story film The Others , an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with
cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has
just occurred.
This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre.
Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra sensitive to any
bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them
believe that the characters are quite strange.
The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when
it is like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of
bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be
set in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the
scariness.
In both The Others and Susan Hill s The Woman in Black, death is a key factor in the story line.
Dying is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major
character in the novel. In The Woman in Black , narrator and main character Arthur
Kipps is constantly haunted by the sound of a pony and trap being pulled under a marsh by
quicksand. He also hears the

The Policy Of The Federal Government Should Enact Based On...

Debate as a Life
Background History of Debate In my sophomore year of highschool, I joined the policy debate
club. Policy debate was an intensive academic activity where teams of two would engage in
discussions on the best government s policy to enact. There would be two teams in each debate
round: affirmative or negative. The affirmative would have to propose a policy that the U.S federal
government should enact based on their constructed advantages for implementation. After that
speech, the negative team would have to make arguments, for examples, kritiks, disadvantages, and
counterplans, to refute the implementation of the plan. Throughout an almost two hour debate
round, both teams will try to speak almost 500 words per minute in order to respond to arguments.
As one can imagine, debate is fast paced activity that boils down to which team can best defend
their arguments. Within in this debate round, there would be a judge to decide the winner. Flow:
Difference between Exotelic and Autotelic
The concept of flow in occupational science is described as an autotelic experience where an
individual is fully engaged under a high challenge activity. Often times, one may lose sense of time
due to high level of concentration. My engagement with debate did not begin with an autotelic
experience, but I was introduced by my friends to a debate camp that paid students $400 dollars
each to learn the structure of policy debate. This

The Wrong Enemy
Carlotta Gall s February 6 piece in the New York Times (NYT), titled Pakistan s Hand in the Rise
of International Jihad, is a journalistic marvel. It spotlights the dizzying creativity a human brain is
capable of when paired with a massive axe to grind. Unfortunately, for prose jammed with so many
accusations, Gall s piece is surprisingly light on substantive sources. Oh, but she makes up for this
foible by heaping dollops of self righteous Americentrism.
No surprises here. Gall, after all, penned The Wrong Enemy: America in Afghanistan 2001 2014, a
tome that must surely feature as essential reading for Pakistanophobes. In her book, Gall posits that
Washington s Afghan war strategy was flawed from the get go. After felling the Taliban
, US forces
should have kept marching east instead of invading Iraq. Why? Because without Pakistan s
patronage, neither they nor Al Qaeda could ever have bloomed in the region.
Okay, so I will not harp on about the Union Oil Company of California s (UNOCAL) Taliban
connection, immortalized incidentally in an article titled Oil Barons court Taliban in Texas from
British daily the Telegraph s 1997 archives. I will not even dwell on Operation Cyclone, and how

Rock And Roll Music Analysis
Rock n Roll music is a subgenre of the meta genre, Rock. Freed (2009, 169) described it by saying,
rock n roll is really swing with a modern name. Ennis (1992, 253) identifies, First, early rocknroll
allowed every performer to draw on the full musical resources of pop, country, and rhythm and
blues. and on rockhall.com (2014) his viewpoint is expanded upon,
The more immediate roots of rock and roll lay in the so called race music, or rhythm blues, and
hillbilly music, or county western of the Forties and Fifties. Other significant influences include
blues, jazz, gospel, boogie woogie, folk and bluegrass.
Rock n Roll drew inspiration from many different styles therefore it is a hybrid of multiple genres.

Generally, the time signature of Rock n Roll is 4/4, as it is in Pop, Country, Blues and many
other genres that Rock n Roll is inspired by. For the purpose of Rock n Roll, we can assume the
common time signature is 4/4 because it is simple and easy to move to. You didn t need to be a
skilled dancer to dance to it, essentially why it was kept simple. Rock n Roll makes use of
syncopation and as songs of this genre are usually in 4/4, the emphasis is on beats 2 and 4.
Snowman (2009, 220) emphasises the importance of syncopation by saying, All dance music makes
use of this, and it s often a vital element that helps tie the whole track together.
All these ingredients combined helps create the energetic beat, arguably the most identified
ingredient of Rock n Roll.
Although the foundation of the beat is very similar to that of Rhythm and Blues, it is clear to see
how Rock n Roll has built upon it, when we listen to the music. Initially, Rock n Roll songs were
often just recreated versions of existing Rhythm and Blues songs. Big Joe Turner s song Shake,

Evaluating Performance
Evaluating Performance Performance evaluations, when implemented properly, act as a tool for
improving employee productivity, team performance and individual development. They can serve
to raise self esteem, increase motivation, strengthen relationships and foster ongoing communication
and commitment (Simpson, 2001). I feel that these reviews play a critical role in the workplace
and should remain a part of standard operating procedures, however many are beginning to disagree.
Current Trends
By the end of 2015, at least 30 of the Fortune 500 companies had stopped using performance
evaluations (Goler, Gale, Grant, 2016). In fact, companies worldwide have begun to question their
rigid ratings systems and once a year appraisal processes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When conversations about professional growth are near constant and untethered by ratings, people
can get overwhelmed. Employees often struggle to figure out which information matters most and
what to ignore (Goler, Gale, Grant, 2016). Performance evaluations allow for an overall assessment
that helps people prioritize. Employees learn what their key strengths are, and where they should
focus their development efforts.
Performance reviews also offer management the opportunity to recognize and address gaps in
training, leading to development or procurement of those skills. Additionally, the reviewprocess
offers employees feedback on how their performance can be improved, such as starting or stopping
certain behaviors (Duggan, N.d.). Lastly, regularly scheduled performance reviews serve as a

How an organization is structured has enormous consequences not only for the success of its
business but, also, for the success of its employees.
Though it is obvious why understanding organizations is critical to business success, nevertheless
it is worthwhile to review these reasons. The structure of a firm either enhances or hinders
efficiency and productivity. In other words, how information flows and to whom, whether and how
many parts of the work process is redundant, how clear and precise is the reporting structure, if and
how new ideas and products are promoted these and many more issues are obvious consequences of
structure and profoundly affect the success of the business.

Information systems are state of the art. The recipients of this information have to be able to act
quickly to stay on top. Thus, they have to be very team centered (to analyze the information and to
translate it into new products and services), and they have to have a great deal of leeway with
respect to decision making and authority (to respond promptly to customer needs).
A growing and successful construction company prided itself on building expensive homes geared
to client needs and adaptable to client wants. However, client requirements were initially not
addressed in depth, methods to solicit this information were not developed (e.g., the use of software
that would enable clients to imagine being inside the house as it was being built), contact was
initiated only when another payment was due, and only the owner could fix the final price of the
house. The net result was that the owner, in effect, convinced buyers what they should want,
thereby dramatically increasing the number of client initiated changes as the clients along the way
became clearer about what they wanted.
Information about customer initiated changes was frequently communicated incorrectly or late to
the field, even more increasing construction costs due to the need to undo work that had been
already completed. Sales people were pre empted at closing regarding sales price, making for rapid

Ultrasonic sensors detect over long ranges up to forty feet, while limit switches and inductive
sensors do not.
Broad area detection: While some photo electric sensors can detect over long distances they lack
the ability to detect over a wide area without using a large number of sensors. The advantage of
Migatron s ultrasonic sensors is that both wide and narrow areas can be covered. All it takes is the
proper ultrasonic transducer selection. Widest range of target materials:Only ultrasonic sensors are
impervious to target material composition. The target material can be clear, solid, liquid, porous,
soft, wood and any color because all can be detected.
Non contact distance measuring: Because sound can be timed from when it leaves the transducer
to when it returns, distance measuring is easy and accurate to .05% of range which equates to +or

Abstract
This paper begins with a general idea of self disclosure by therapists and the importance of keeping
the client s needs first. It covers many aspects of self disclosure including ethically what to look for
in the motives of using self disclosure with a client. There are other aspects of self disclosure which
include transference and countertransference which are issues which need to be attended to
immediately for the therapist to remain objective and not react to a client. Therapists must be
cautious in disclosing information and make sure it is relevant to treatment. Beneficence and
nonmaleficence are important things to consider when self disclosing and the therapist must be

Arthur Miller s Crucible Characters and Social Strife Essay
Arthur Miller s The Crucible presents the fact that every action has a consequence. The playwright
uses his characters and the choices they make to demonstrate what happens in the town of Salem,
Massachusetts. The corrupt interests of the Putnams, Abigail, and the court opposing the common
good lead to social strife in the town. The common townsfolk, such as the Putnams, take advantage
of the situation, and they turn against their neighbors causing tears on the moral makeup of the
town. The vengeful tactics undertaken by the townsfolk to convict their neighbors allow them to
avoid their personal quarrels with each other causing fear of accusations to spread. As Hale

(101) The only families rich enough to be able to buy land that is auctioned would be the
Putnams and the Nurses. The Putnams were the greedy ones, desiring more land and wealth.
According to Giles, Mr. Putnam devised a plan to gain George Jacob s land. Mr. Putnam told his
daughter to indict Jacobs of witchcraft. The accusation leads to a sentencing and eventually a
hanging, making Jacob s land available for auction. The people of Salem lie and do wrong to
defend their own lives at the cost of their morality. The reputations of the accused are tarnished,
their morals are lost, and their lives ruined. Abigail and the girls in Salem lie to save themselves
from the punishment of their actions, but soon they find themselves the center of attention among
the town. Their actions and desire for attention pinpoint the start of a series of accusations creating
fear and hysteria in Salem. When the girls are found in the forest with Tituba dancing and casting
spells, Betty falls into a bedridden sickness . The town starts to wonder if witches are to blame. In
Betty s room John Proctor and Abigail are having a conversation. John says, The town s mumbling

paranoid and fearful the community is about this situation. In Act 2 Elizabeth says, The town s

College Athletes Should Not Be Exempt from Regular Class...
Many college athletes miss classes because of practice, competition and from exhaustion.
For those reasons, supporters argue for exemption of athletes from class attendance policies.
Others argue that college athletes are given scholarships to attend college to play sports. On the
contrary, the focus of colleges is educating students. The question is, should colleges athletes be
exempt from the class attendance requirements? The answer is no and here is why. First, the
education of athletes takes priority over recreational activities. Second, it is unfair for athletes to
receive preferential treatment. Third, exempting athletes from the policies does not allow them to
develop time management skills. For these reasons the college ... Show more content on

After all, athletes are not born they train hard to get their skills and do remarkably on the court. The
philosophy here is athletes must work equally hard in the classroom. (Emma) stated in A College
Perspective on Academic and the Student Athlete.
Coach Athletic Director As more eyes open to the athlete s challenges and struggles, more ideas and
strategies will emerge to help them succeed not only in between the lines of the playing field or
court, but in the lecture halls, science labs, and classrooms as well. Thus, education is a key
element that produces academic achievers, tomorrow s leaders and balance adults. Given these
points, the student athletes must recognize the importance class attendance.
For the longest time it has been known that student athletes often miss classes. Moreover, athlete
miss classes to attend practice, take part in competition and from exhaustion. Also, some athletes
are going to leave college early and enter professional sport. Consequently, they skip classes and
slide through college. Of course, colleges with attendance policies requires students to attend
classes a certain amount of time and so should the athletes. Whenever athletes miss classes their
academic performance is usually affected. As a matter of fact, it is difficult for them to keep up the
grades required for them to keep the scholarship reward and stay on the team. By the same token,

The Role Of Social Expectations Of A Role In A Social System
Concepts
RT classifies every individual as an actor that carries out a role (Kahn Fellows, 2013). Actors
perspective of social expectations leads them to formulate scripts for behaviors in a situation
outlining the actions of their role (Kahn Fellows, 2013; van der Horst, n.d). These social
expectations direct interactions with other actors of a group or system with the intention of
gaining rewards or avoiding consequences (Kahn Fellows, 2013). Each role within a social system
has a role set, specifically the many multiple relationships associated with a role (Kahn Fellows,
2013; McEwen Wills, 2010). For instance, a foster parent has a role set consisting of other foster
parents, biological parents of foster children, social workers, guardian ad litem, and ... Show more

People occupy more than one role at any given time in their daily lives, as a consequence, can
lead to role strain. Role strain is when the expectations of one role affect the role expectations of
another (Kahn Fellows, 2013; McEwen Wills, 2010). For example, a foster mother, who is also a
lawyer, has to take off from work to stay at home with a foster child who has been suspended
from school. The role strain in this example is the foster mother is not able to be in court to
carry out the role of a lawyer, because she is at home in the role of a foster mother. Unfortunately,
role strain can lead to role conflict. RT explains that role conflict occurs when the expectations of
one or more roles are not compatible with another role (Kahn Fellows, 2013;

Scurvy During The Age Of Scurvy
Scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency) had plagued the world for multiple centuries until actions were
finally taken in attempt to find an antidote. Scurvy is a disease which results from insufficient
intake of vitamin C and leads to the spots on the skin, spongy gums and bleeding from almost all
mucous membranes. Vitamin Cdeficiency and scurvy was hastened in the age of sail because of
the rigorous working conditions for sailors. The diet of sailors during the age of sail was obviously
the main factor in the plight of scurvy. As Vitamin
C cannot be produced internally by humans, it
must be ingested through the diet. By examining the history of vitamin C, one can fully appreciate
the advances made in its research. Surprisingly, vitamin C s importance

The research question that will be investigated is: To what extent does price promotion moderate
the relationship between culture and quality perception of private labels? 1.3 Theoretical
background
De Mooij and Hofstede (2002) define culture by eight dimensions. Asian cultures are associated
with higher levels of uncertainty avoidance (UA) (see Appendix 1) compared to individualistic
cultures, therefore these Asian cultures are more attracted to products with a lower risk (Moss
amp; Vinten, 2001; Samli, 1995; Shannon, 2005). Furthermore, there is a strong belief that Asian
consumers have a strong preference for NBs over PLs (Ahuvia amp; Wong, 1998; Brady et al.,
2003; De Mooij amp; Hofstede, 2002). According to Batra and Sinha (2000) consumers who relate
higher prices with higher quality are less attracted by PLs. According to De Mooij and Hofstede
(2002) PLs are more frequent in individualistic cultures such as the Netherlands, than collectivist
cultures such as in China. They presented two specific reasons for collectivist (Asian) nations to
choose NBs over PLs, namely that NBs lead to more status, and the preference for long term
relationships and so for well known NBs. Therefore, collectivistic cultures are more risk averse and
tend to value brand names. They also value the perceived link between price and quality, which
negatively affects the image of PLs in such countries. On the other hand, individualistic cultures are

How does he use descriptive imagery to establish the setting . This is a story by edgar allan poe
that was published in november of 1846 in a womans magazine. During the story he uses many
types of imagery. He seems to try to use many of these to establish a well made story. This story
is so well established to be creepy and disturbing that in many parts of the story he lets the reader
think for themselves so many people have different opinions on the story. He is well descriptive
but rellys so much on imagery in this story than some of the others. ВЁThe vaults are
insufferably damp. They are encrusted with niter.ВЁ In this part of the story he is trying to
show the reader how damp the vaults are because of the niter. He does a really good job of

what items should be produced based on current styles, while product managers have the authority
to transfer merchandise from one store to another if necessary. Together, speed and decentralized

has attained, leading to increased sales for the company. 2. Organizational Structure: IT Embedded
Both Inditex s Chairman, Amancio Ortega, and its CEO, Jose Maria Castellano Rios a former IT
manager, believe that computers and technology are imperative to the execution of the company s
strategy. Inditex does not have a CIO. Instead, a technology steering committee, including Ortega
and Castellano Rios, is responsible for initiating new technology initiatives. Even with this high
level attention to the opportunities offered by information systems, no cost/benefit analysis of IT
projects is undertaken and there is no formal procedure for determining which projects will be
undertaken. All of the company s IT employees work from the company headquarters. Zara prefers
to write its own applications, as opposed to buying commercially available software, because it
believes this is the only way to meet its unique business needs. When developing production and

Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson Essay
Famed Confederate General Thomas Stonewall Jackson s legacy is hardly easy to define. His is
most remembered for cunning speed and brutality in battle and many consider him without equal.
The same strategies Jackson used in the Shenandoah Valley campaign were scrutinized by both
Rommel and Patton for inspiration in WWII. Jackson s personal discipline carried over into his
command. Although his men were often barefoot and near starvation, he pushed them forward into
battle, not wishing to sacrifice the element of surprise. Many of his battles were actually waged on
Sundays which contradicts Jackson s steadfast devotion to Christianity that many attribute to
fanaticism.
As a Virginian, however, he felt more loyal to his state... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After West Point, Jackson served in the Mexican American War where he would meet his friend and
future commander, General Robert E. Lee. When the war ended, he bounced from Fort Hamilton
in New York and Fort Meade in Florida. Eventually, though, he resigned his commission to accept
a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia in 1851. During this
time, he married and lost a wife in childbirth and remarried again. If not for the onset of the Civil
War, he may have remained at VMI and most likely faded into obscurity. Jackson s first duty as an
officer in the Confederate States of America came from President Jefferson Davis who ordered
him to organize Harper s Ferry, the infamous site of John Brown s bloody raid in 1859. When
Jackson arrived, he was taken aback by the disorganization and drunkenness of the troops and
immediately determined to reestablish order. Jackson accomplished this task in less than a
week and gained approval from General Robert E. Lee. Jackson continued to establish order but
was relieved of his command when Jefferson Davis decided to replace him with Joseph E.
Johnston because he felt Johnston held more stature and military experience. Later, this would
prove a mistake since the South was unable to hold Harper s Ferry from the Union. Harper Ferry s
loss of Jackson proved the battlefield s gain. Jackson s skill

The Importance Of Writing A Web Portfolio
For my project I chose to create a web portfolio. I chose this because I ve found that it s the best
format to showcase my various projects I ve done through the History and Communication
departments at Western. Previously I ve worked on a project similar to this for my
Communication 350 class but I wanted to be able to build on what I learned to make an online
portfolio more suited for career oriented work.
In approaching this project I wanted to get several things out of it. First and foremost, I wanted to
take the time I had to create something I was genuinely proud of and get to use in real life.
Additionally, I wanted to build on my time management, reviewing, and graphic design skills.
Initially, when I think back the project was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This made me think critically about things I have done in order to decide what I thought was
worthy of a showcase. People tend to want to think that a lot of the things they do is objectively
really good. Although, sometimes that s not the case. I went through my work that I had saved
from my years at college community college and Western and picked some of my favorite
samples. I left some out that seemed irrelevant such as a few graphic design pieces from my
Communication Technologies class that were done purely for an assignment and I had no
attachment to. Then, I further filtered them by looking back at what kind of grades I got on
them. For example, I liked a paper I wrote for a Hamilton and History class last quarter. However,
after being reviewed by my professor, flaws in structure and argument were pointed out. While I
like the content, the quality of the paper was lacking enough that I decided not to display it in my
portfolio. I think being able to think critically about your own work helps you become a better
producer overall. Anyone can have someone else critique something they did but it takes an open,
objective mind to be able to pick out and admit that stuff you do is not always perfect.
Additionally, this project really challenged my attention to detail. I chose to create my site using my
own template to be more original instead of just using a pre made website and inputting my
personal information into it. This

`` Atonement `` By Ian Mcewan
In today s society, people often times misinterpret things we hear or we tend to make
assumptions about several things such as who said what and worrying about whether or not it
was true. It later becomes a major problem when these misperceptions get out of hand and are
used to penalize someone for something they really didn t do. These people often times can be
kids. Teens specifically tend to have open ears and observe everything. They crave gossip and
secrets and they aren t able to contain themselves and keep it to themselves. Obviously it is possible
that they don t understand what they hear most times, but can easily make it up or give false

Furthermore, McEwan uses symbols alongside, motifs such as the Trials of Arabella in order to
explain Briony s mindset as a child. This suggest and supports the idea that Briony being young is
unable to fully grasp and understand her surroundings.
To begin, in part one of Atonement we learn who each character is through the perspective of
different characters. Alongside we get the unique perspective of several scenes that take place. One
very important scene is the fountain scene where Robbie and Cecilia are filling a vase with water
and Robbie causes the vase to slip out of Cecilia s hands breaks some pieces falling into the
fountain. Cecilia acts fast and removes her clothing in order to retrieve the vase piece.
Meanwhile, you have Briony wondering her room and happens to see the two conversing and is
shocked to see Cecilia remove her clothes. Briony begins to assume things instantly The Triton
fountain, and standing by the basin s retaining wall was her sister, and right before her was
Robbie Turner. There was something rather formal about the way he stood, feet apart, head held
back. A proposal of marriage. Briony would not have been surprised. She herself had written a
tale in which a humble woodcutter saved a princess from drowning and ended by marrying her.
What was presented here fitted well. Robbie Turner (36). Here Briony is only able to see the
interactions between Robbie and Cecilia but she can t necessarily hear anything but, it doesn t

The Graduate Symbolism

Best Picture Analysis #1 The Graduate
Criteria:
1.The movie should have more to it than just pure entertainment. It should have a deeper message
that will impact me in one way or another.
2.At least one character should be emotionally relatable, and the experiences that the character goes
through should also be realistic and relatable.
3.There should be at least some symbolism in the movie that foreshadows an event/ multiple events.
In the year 1967, Mike Nichols directed The Graduate a movie that tells the story of how Benjamin
Braddock, a recent college graduate, gets involved in an affair with Mrs. Robinson, and then later

The first shot in the clip is a close up of the blank stare on Ben s face, against the white
background of the airplane seat. This shot looks like a mugshot which symbolizes how Ben
feels trapped in a prison. Next, when Ben reaches the exit of the airport, the camera stops
following him, and he gets lost in the crowd, another similar situation occurs when Ben goes to
Elaine s college to meet her he gets lost in the crowd. These scenes connect to the scene when his
parents take him downstairs from his room to meet all the guests at the party and everyone
crowds around him, leaving him with no personal space. When Ben tries to leave the party and
go upstairs, a lady pulls him down. This scene symbolizes how whenever Ben tries to escape the
prison or pull himself up, someone or his own anxiety and worries pull him back down. Another
interesting way that Mike Nichols used symbolism is through the color scheme. He chose to use
neutrals with a lot of gray and black throughout the movie the clothes, walls, rooms, carpets. The
color gray is an unemotional color. It is detached, neutral, impartial and indecisive this color
symbolizes how Ben is feeling throughout the movie. He seems completely detached from all the
happy scenes and the only emotions he shows are of loneliness and isolation. Another way the
colors were used in the movie was through the constant high contrast of black and white good
versus bad, innocence versus evil. Most of the time, Mrs. Robinson is seen wearing black clothes,
symbolizing her negative behavior and actions, whereas Elaine is always wearing white, and her
room is all white too, symbolizing her innocence and positive

Identity And True Identity In The Movie Finding Forrester
Expository Essay
In everyone s there is your character and your identity. Some people choose to express their true
identity and true self, others hide their intentions and attitude to protect themselves. Their actions
to hide their personality could have been possibly decided by experiences or lifestyles. In the
movie Finding Forrester, the character Jamal Wallace is a 16 year old African American boy from
the Bronx. Where Jamal is from success in academics is not important and is not a necessity. In

crossed the street to the courts. Later that day he noticed his writing was corrected and marked
with errors. Since that point on Jamal and William worked together to expand and exploit Jamal s

Code Of Conduct, Ssts And Other Regulations
1.Introduction
Tax professionals have to adhere to the rules set by the Code of Conduct, SSTS and other
regulations. In order to perform their job appropriately they have to be honest, objective, and
remain conflict free while working with clients. The tax professional assists their client as a guide,
but the ultimate responsibility of accuracy relies on the taxpayer. The taxpayer or taxpaying entity
uses their tax preparer for guidance since they are aware of tax rules and regulations. The
purpose of the tax return that is filed yearly for each tax payer or tax paying entity serves the
purpose of being a summary of activity through the year for the government to access what portion
of the activity spending is owed to the government. If the client is wealthy or an extremely large
entity, preparing their tax return can then become an extremely complex job which will require the
tax preparer to refer to the several rules and regulations for proper filing.

Three Perspectives On Social Support
There are various social support approaches from which to draw from, for the purpose of this
paper, I will adopt and briefly introduce the three social support perspectives on social support
research outlined by Lakey and Cohen (Cohen, Underwood Gottlieb, 2000, p. 29). The three
perspectives on social supportare the (a) stress and coping perspective, (b) the social
constructionist perspective and (b) the relationship perspective (Lakey Cohen, 2000). The first
perspective suggests that social support acts as a buffer for the effect of stress (Cohen, Underwood
Gottlieb, 2000). The second proposes that our health is influenced by confidence in oneself, which
is a consequent of social support (Cohen, Underwood Gottlieb, 2000). The third perspective
however focuses on the foundations of relationships built within social support systems and how
the relationships are also considered to have an effect on health (Cohen, Underwood Gottlieb, 2000).

Unicameral legislatures or one chamber are usually deep rooted in countries structured on a unitary

Merits of unicameral legislatures includes the ability to enact proposed legislation speedily because
double consideration of measures by two houses is unessential as there is only one body needed
to adopt the legislation . In other words , it is a simpler form of government . Besides , if
legislation fails to pass or if citizens interests are neglected , legislators cannot criticize the other

My Family, The Asaf Jah Dynasty Essay
I, Nizam of Hyderabad, am truly delighted with the opinion of the British Governor General who
has decided that I must stay in power of my state, Hyderabad.
Hyderabad has been under my rule for thirty seven years and this city has flourished the most
during my reign; it is only justified that I remain as the ruler of this state for as long as I breathe.
My family, the Asaf Jah Dynasty has been in control of Hyderabad since the decline of Mughal
Empire. This dynasty was founded by Mir Qamar ud Din Siddiqi, a viceroy of the Deccan under
the Mughal Empire from 1713 to 1721. When the Mughal control collapsed in 1724, Asaf Jah
declared himself independent in Hyderabad, and that is how we, the Nizams, have been ruling for
more than two centuries.
During the period of my rule, Hyderabad State became the richest state in India. I was presented

colonial British government for our collaborating role in the wars against Tipu Sultan of Mysore,
the First war of Indian Independence of 1857 1858, after which I became the only Indian prince to

Art Integration Case Study Essay

Schools and educators are beginning to understand the value of inclusion of art education in K 12

standards and hiring highly qualify teachers to teach in the subject area of visual arts. Research
over the past decade reveals areas where effective arts education strategies, especially arts

of what is driving this initiative is the understanding that some students learn most effectively

The Interview With Sara Watkins
Introduction Every individual has their own perception on what a leader is to them. What is a
leader? What characteristics does a leader have? Are leaders born or made? These questions, along
with many more throughout the process have given a general idea of what a good leader entails.
This grouped included 17 anonymous interviews that provides the thoughts and opinions of what
leadershipis, which include similarities across the board along with some differences.
Analysis
There are two different kinds of leaders. One would be a team player and the other is more of a
dictator. Going through the interviews it was clear to point out which were more of a team player
when it came to leadership as opposed to one who would just call the ... Show more content on

Key words and phrases that I found in the research that correlate are anyone who influences, who
sets a good example, and is a great communicator.
There was also good feedback on whether a leader can be born or made. A majority seemed to
think that the answer is both. Nature vs. Nurture was brought up on multiple occasions throughout
the interviews saying that both are important. This made sense because just like any trait, if you
don t use it then you lose it. One might be born with the right traits and characteristics but it is
ones experiences that really brings them to light. It was brought up more than once that being born
with those traits just makes the path to being a leader easier. Though there was one who thought
one could only be born to be a leader.

somebody else no matter how much knowledge you have about a subject does not mean that you
can actually do it...

Asses the Extent to Which the Ideal of Equality Is Shared...
Assess the extent to which the ideal of equality is shared by all Australians
The idea of mateship and the trendy notion of a fair go for all emphasises the strength of Australian
support for the value of equality of opportunity, the ideal goal of all Australians having equal
opportunity to achieve success. Notions of Egalitarianism are what Australia strives to accomplish
within its society, through the implementing and practicing of legislations such as Anti
Discrimination Act (1997), Sex Discrimination Act (1954) and Racial Discrimination Act (1975)
which were established in order to conclude unfair treatment based on people s looks, beliefs or
choices. Human Rights is also another important element which demonstrates ... Show more content

Only recently, the Australian Government introduced reforms to de facto relationships. This meant
that same sex couples are entitled to the same benefits and subject to the same obligations as
opposite sex couples (Property Relationships Act 1984 NSW). The legislation of Same Sex
Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws General Law Reform) Act 2008 removed
discriminatory treatment of same sex couples. These acts included laws about tax, superannuation,
Medicare, workers compensations, employment entitlements and family law. Homosexuals are
discriminated against in terms of marriage, donating blood and are also victims to abuse due to
their status. A study conducted by the Victorian Gay and Lesbian RightsLobby revealed that 84%
of participants aged between 14 and 21 had been treated unfairly because of their sexuality and
almost half had suffered verbal or physical abuse. With these inequalities present, it is difficult to
achieve equality and fairness around this group. Although Australia proposes the ideal of
egalitarianism, it is hard to justify whether it is present or not. The ideal goal and desire which
Australia values within its diverse hybrid society is that Australia is a lucky country , priding itself
of mateship and equal opportunity which establishes Australia s nation identity. However with
conflict and discrimination against groups such as Muslim Women and

Differences In The Culture Of Honduras And The Dominican...
Honduras and Dominican Republic Culture
Honduras and The Dominican Republic are said to be almost the same culture because of
similarities in their cultures. Although many may think they are the same because they are both
spanish speaking countries but they are actually wrong. They are so far from each other but they
do have similarities like in there holidays, clothing and even in their foods. Although they have
their similarities they are own unique in their own way of doing things. This differences make
people proud of their culture because it s means they are different from others. They do have
differences in like the way they dress, the way they celebrate and the way they prepare their food.
This things make people proud of their country and the cultures it s given them. Keeping this in
mind when you read the rest of the essay you will see the similarities and the differences. They are
different in their own ways.
Hondurans and Dominican Republic Culture
Whenever traveling to different countries they notice every culture is different from their own.
Every country has different cultures but many times there can be similarities, For example, if you
travel to both Honduras and Dominican Republic you notice a lot of differences from the way
they dress to the food they eat. They both have great cultures and they are different cultures but
they can be similar at times. Firstly, the food they eat are similar foods like both of their dishes

Pros And Cons Of Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine s Arguments in Common Sense in Favor of Independence
Second Draft For Review
Will Collins
Thomas Paine published Common Sense in January of 1776 at a tipping point in the American
Revolution. The Colonies had been in rebellion nine months after the first shots were fired at
Lexington and Concord. Washington s army was had set siege to Boston. However, there was a
large number of colonists that were undecided about the wisdom of revolution and independence.
Many colonists still felt emotionally attached to the mother country and the king and many
questioned how revolution and war would bring peace. In addition, given the relative wealth (and
low taxes) of the Colonies, many questioned the wisdom of separating from their main ... Show

He said, time has found us (18) as if it were a God given fact. By using Biblical interpretation and
culturally reachable metaphors, Paine was able to construct compelling arguments for
independence within the intellectual and, more importantly, within the emotional reach of most
colonists. These arguments were instrumental in the Americans finally declaring independence
within six months of the publication of Common Sense. Literature Cited

There are four ages of early humanity which are gold, silver, bronze and Iron Age. The first age
of human existence was the age of Gold. At this time, life was moral goodness and fruitfulness.
Humans ate all of the fruit back then without having to work for it. In the age of silver, people
had to work for a living. The age of bronze saw the first wars, but some semblance of morality
persisted. In the age of iron, however, nothing is sacred. Even family ties lead to bloodshed .In the

American Political System
America is a very unique and different country. We perfected the equal transfer of power to the
next political party, whether their policies are similar or not. Previously, power has been
transferred by war and bloodshed. America is able to refrain from doing so by our democratic
form of government. Our government is by far the best on Earth. It is this way because of how
we run our politics and run our country. For the past few decades our political system has been
slowly corrupting. More and more money is required for candidates to be elected into office. This
didn t happen one hundred years ago, and the politicians weren t as sneaky as they are now at
hiding where the large amounts of cash are coming from that sponsors their race. This leads... Show

What needs to be shown is how much money is actually being pumped into the campaign races of
candidates and how over excessive it is. To begin with, the amount of money spent on campaign
financing is excessive and absurd. Our politicians are more worried about taking your money and
being greedy, rather than actually passing laws that they promise to put into action. Most of the
time the politicians will pass the laws that are so manipulated it looks nothing like what they had
originally promised. To prove that the amount spent on campaigns is way over the top is that in
1964 the presidential campaigns of Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater cost approximately $60
million combined (ProQuest Staff). Where as in the presidential elections for 2012 each candidate
raised more than one billion dollars (Washington Post). This shows that our candidates are spending
such hefty amounts on advertisements and other various things that are not essentially needed for
them to promote themselves to the people America. The Washington Post brought to our attention
that every presidential campaign ends up costing more than the last. Marcus Ruth said in Hard to
Follow the Money that every election cycle feature hand wringing about how this the most
expensive and most out of control ever, but the magnitude and implications of the money from the
2012 elections are truly amazing. Continuing of the fact that every year the

The Risks Of The Shipping Industry
The Risk sources in the Shipping Industry along with current opportunities and future threats to the
company s core business
Technically, shipping risk can be defined as the measurable liability for any financial loss arising
from unforeseen imbalances between the supply and demand for sea transport (Stopford 2009).
More specifically, shipowners may face eight different risktypes during their operation in the tanker
market.
These risks can be categorized into the following types (Kavussanos and Visvikis 2006):
Business risk: Is the risk generated by volatility in freight rates which cause uncertainty to the
shipowner s income, in other words fluctuations in EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes). It
depends on the demand and the price of the product sold. It is influenced by (a) freight rates, (b)
voyage costs (fuel costs, port charges, canal dues and broking commissions), (c) operating costs
(manning, repairs, maintenance, stores, insurance and administration) and finally (d) exchange
rates as income is counted in US dollars while costs are counted in current exchange.
Figure 6. Average earnings of all tankers Brent Arab Crude Oil Prices.
In Figure 6 we distinguish the bunker price fluctuations. Bunker is a derivative of Crude Oil and
as it fluctuates it increases the volatility and the amount of risk exposure of the shipping company.

Tata Nano Case Analysis
Tata Nano Case Analysis
Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors Ltd., hoped to raise the status of Middle class families in
India by offering the Tata Nano. Expectations were increasing amongst the customers regarding the
product features and its efficiency. Competitors were eagerly waiting for its arrival to find out what
they were going to be up against. It had strong and convincing features and was actually a good
product. Unfortunately there were too many strategic marketing problems that kept it from being as
big as they thought it was going to be. We will explain the problems it met and showcase some
alternative solutions that could be implemented.
Strategic Marketing Problems

The company should have done whatever they could to modify current facilities that could
produce the Nano. Although this would lead to less production, it would make sense. They
should produce less of the Nano in order to test its performance in the market. After a successful
entry, plans should be made for large scale production (a new plant). The CEO planned poorly
for the future, even when the product didn t even hit the market yet. His goal on minimal costs
was his backbone for the Nano and he relied heavily on this one feature. He should have
undergone more market testing for his product instead of assuming that everyone was going to go
crazy for his product. He needed to come up with the proper campaign that would attract customers
for additional reasons other than cost. Everyone already knows the price is extremely low, so ads
should stress other qualities of the vehicle.
They need to ask themselves three questions: 1. What does our product exactly do? 2. Who is this
product helpful to? 3. What parts of the country/world will accept this product?
Then use a combination of the various market segments to narrow down on an EFFECTIVE target
market. Some of these may include, but are not limited to demographic, geographic, and
behavioral. They were really pushing the whole cheap aspect in an area where the market segment
is more interested in cars that symbolize a greater status. In other words, the Tata Nano is

What Was The Causes Of The Anglo-Boer War
The Anglo Boer War remains the most terrible and destructive armed conflict in the history of
South Africa. It shaped the history of South Africa in the 20th Century and therefore left a legacy
marking the end of the long process of British conquest of South African societies. Conflicting
political ideologies of imperialism and republicanism, including the tension between the political
leaders, like the Boer leader Paul Kruger and the British leader, Cecil Rhodes. These were some
of the causes of the war. The discovery of diamonds in Johannesburg and gold on the
Witwatersrand also pricked the British interest in South Africa, especially after the Global
Financial Panic of 1873. The Anglo Boer War or also known as The First South African

Pope Gregory Research Paper
Pope Gregory Born circa 1020 in Sovana, Tuscany, Pope Gregory VII is one of the great reforming
popes, and is best known for his part in the Investiture Controversy, which was his dispute with with
Henry IV that reinforced the primacy of papal authority. He excommunicated Henry three times
because Henry was getting out of hand and the political struggles between the Catholic Churchand
his empire. Although, Gregory was also despised during his reign by some for his expansive use of
papal powers, this caused his memory to be remembered on numerous occasions in later
generations, both good and bad, which was often reflected in writings of the Catholic Church.
Gregory was accused of necromancy, torture, attempted assassinations, unjust excommunication,...

However, soon enough Gregory became involved in leading the Church, serving as chaplain to
Pope Gregory VI. Gregory VI was removed from power with charges of simony, and was sent to
Germany. Hildebrand followed and crossed the alps. His stay in Germany was of amazing
educative value, and helped his ruling as pope in the future. In Cologne he pursued his studies
and became aware of the circles of Lorraine where interest of the church and its life was at the
top. Soon he returned to Rome and served as advisor to Pope Leo IX. With the death of Alexander
II, Hildebrand became pope and took the name Gregory VII. His election was bitterly berated by his
enemies. From the beginning Gregory tried to assert his authority over political leaders, and thus
issued an order against lay investiture. This brought the controversy of the struggle between church
authority and secular authority. It was questioned whether the king had final authority. A common
belief was that was that kings were choosing bishops and abbots to benefit themselves and not the
churches. This might not be entirely true; kings have been the origin of funds for churches. It only
seems correct they should appoint who runs them. Kings wanted to show how if they didn`t provide
the funds of the churches they wouldn t exist. So kings electing who is runs the

That means if there s only one dissenter, then the whole trial and case is blown to bits, and justice
is not served. I just don t see how a system where unanimity is the only way for a conviction can

Breast Health Care at Magee Women International Intro As an intern with Magee Womancare International (MWI), the international humanitarian outreach arm of Magee Womens Hospital, my primary goal was to provide breast health education to underserved African Americans and Latino women throughout the Pittsburgh area, to navigate and support these women through the breast health continuum of care, and to facilitate clinical and mammography screenings through the Breast Health Equity and Circulos de Amigas programs. As a male intern, my role in this program was to engage local and predominantly male led grassroots organizations and religious groups in breast health education to promote healthy families and ultimately healthy and safe communities. I was also required to assist my fellow undergraduate intern Maddie with her work in the programing and execution of the South Asia Youth Summit (aka SAYS) program. In addition I was expected to assist my Suporvisiors with grant writing and miscellaneous task regarding running our several ongoing current grant initiatives. • 3. Charles Dickens Biography He is living proof of childhood corruption and portrays himself as his young, mischievous, and perplexed characters Oliver Twist and David Copperfield. He proves that he is a product of the Victorian era as he brings attention to the childhood cruelty, the less fortunate in an English society, and the unwealthy dysfunctional families of the early Victorian time period. Charles Dickens reflects these and other issues as he brings to life the realism of writing. While others were writing about the way things should be, rather than the way things were, Dickens was challenging these ideas, and argued that paupers and criminals were not evil at birth. This was an act of rebellion, for he in fact was showing the Victorian middle class generation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Victorian era, poverty became due to many reasons; a population increase, the search of employment, and a depressing state of the shortage of housing. All of these points had a direct impact to why there was the less fortunate in an English society. The nineteenth century saw a huge growth in the population of Great Britain, and this brought the poverty line lower and lower in cities such as London. Dickens, being affected by this, had a great impact on helping the less fortunate in the Victorian time period by bringing to life the realism of the problems that the paupers, criminals, and just plain poor people had. He did this through showing how the wealthy treated the poor with no respect and with cruelty through his characters such as Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver Twist. Although, Dickens brings attention to how not all upper or middle class people were always cruel to the poor, through his characters in Oliver Twist such as Mr. Sowerberry, who was quite kind to Oliver and was uneasy about being cross with him. Along with poverty being such an issue, there were also the unwealthy dysfunctional families of the Victorian time period. Charles Dickens grew up in a home where money was never a concern, until his father went bankrupt and he was abandoned by his family which ultimately led to Dickens being a poor orphaned boy. Introduction The Industrial Revolution began in the late 18th and 19th centuries and was a period of significant economic development marked by the introduction of power driven machinery. Much like the Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution began to take shape in Britain and then spread to other countries. During the Industrial Revolution, many power driven machines were invented, which replaced hand tools. Social impacts The Industrial Revolution increased the material wealth of the Western world. Since population was increasing in Great Britain at the same time that landowners were enclosing common village lands. This resulted in a very high unemployment rate for workers in the first phases of the Industrial Revolution. Desperate for work, the working class had no bargaining power to demand higher wages, fairer work hours, or better working conditions. Worse still, since only wealthy people in Great Britain were eligible to vote, workers could not use the democratic political system to fight for rights and reforms. Economic Effects In pre industrial times skilled craftsmen would work from traditional locations in the home and small workshops, this was known as the cottage industry. When the Industrial Revolution begun, machines, such as the steam engines were invented, to power large scale factories, the cottage industry system could not keep up with the demand of goods. Therefore more people were forced to seek employment in cities. • 7. Unraveling The Enigma Of Christopher Mccandless Unraveling the Enigma of Christopher McCandless Throughout the novel, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer sincerely disentangles the haunting enigma of Chris McCandless. By tracing the places, people and experiences intertwined in the life of McCandless, Krakauer narrates the life story of a puzzling corpse found in a bus buried in the Alaskan frontier in a truly authentic way of storytelling. Although Krakauer inserts direct quotes from people who McCandless came into direct contact with and experts from primary source journals, Krakauer s own voice in the narration of the dead man s life is trustworthy due to the similarities the protagonist and the author share. Common connections such as similar paternal stress made outstanding impacts in both men s lives, starting at a young age. Furthermore, a sort of agitation with the soul ailed Krakauer and McCandless fueled by a reckless persona confined in the modern world. Lastly, a craving for human contact when in total isolation troubled both the author and subject in their adventures narrowed in the natural world. The mutual bond apparent to the reader between Krakauer and McCandless makes the writing in the novel sincere enabling Krakauer to speak of a dead s man life with profound authority and truth. Unconditional understanding through shared paternal issues, agitation of the soul, and need for human contact grants Krakauer access to divulge into the conundrum of Chis McCandless and authority to earnestly narrate the mysterious ... An essay on different genres including the Ghost genre and the Fantasy Adventure genre I have chosen two completely different genres to base my essay on. Firstly, I have the mysterious and gripping Ghost Genre; the books I have studied are The Woman in Black , The Langoliers and the spooky film, The Others . The second genre is Fantasy Adventure. The book I am studying is Lirael , a recent book written by Australian author Garth Nix. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring , directed by Peter Jackson is the film that I am analysing. There are many, definite trends to ghost stories, no matter what the novel is about. They are all usually set in remote areas and are about haunting. Death is usually common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the ghost story film The Others , an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has just occurred. This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre. Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra sensitive to any bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them believe that the characters are quite strange. The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when it is like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be set in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the scariness. In both The Others and Susan Hill s The Woman in Black, death is a key factor in the story line. Dying is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major character in the novel. • 11. The Policy Of The Federal Government Should Enact Based On... Weimin Deng (Tuesday Section) Debate as a Life Background History of Debate In my sophomore year of highschool, I joined the policy debate club. Policy debate was an intensive academic activity where teams of two would engage in discussions on the best government s policy to enact. There would be two teams in each debate round: affirmative or negative. The affirmative would have to propose a policy that the U.S federal government should enact based on their constructed advantages for implementation. After that speech, the negative team would have to make arguments, for examples, kritiks, disadvantages, and counterplans, to refute the implementation of the plan. Throughout an almost two hour debate round, both teams will try to speak almost 500 words per minute in order to respond to arguments. As one can imagine, debate is fast paced activity that boils down to which team can best defend their arguments. Within in this debate round, there would be a judge to decide the winner. Flow: Difference between Exotelic and Autotelic The concept of flow in occupational science is described as an autotelic experience where an individual is fully engaged under a high challenge activity. Often times, one may lose sense of time due to high level of concentration. My engagement with debate did not begin with an autotelic experience, but I was introduced by my friends to a debate camp that paid students $400 dollars each to learn the structure of policy debate. It spotlights the dizzying creativity a human brain is capable of when paired with a massive axe to grind. Unfortunately, for prose jammed with so many accusations, Gall s piece is surprisingly light on substantive sources. Oh, but she makes up for this foible by heaping dollops of self righteous Americentrism. No surprises here. Gall, after all, penned The Wrong Enemy: America in Afghanistan 2001 2014, a tome that must surely feature as essential reading for Pakistanophobes. In her book, Gall posits that Washington s Afghan war strategy was flawed from the get go. After felling the Taliban , US forces should have kept marching east instead of invading Iraq. Why? Because without Pakistan s patronage, neither they nor Al Qaeda could ever have bloomed in the region. You didn t need to be a skilled dancer to dance to it, essentially why it was kept simple. Rock n Roll makes use of syncopation and as songs of this genre are usually in 4/4, the emphasis is on beats 2 and 4. Snowman (2009, 220) emphasises the importance of syncopation by saying, All dance music makes use of this, and it s often a vital element that helps tie the whole track together. All these ingredients combined helps create the energetic beat, arguably the most identified ingredient of Rock n Roll. Although the foundation of the beat is very similar to that of Rhythm and Blues, it is clear to see how Rock n Roll has built upon it, when we listen to the music. Asian cultures are associated with higher levels of uncertainty avoidance (UA) (see Appendix 1) compared to individualistic cultures, therefore these Asian cultures are more attracted to products with a lower risk (Moss amp; Vinten, 2001; Samli, 1995; Shannon, 2005). According to De Mooij and Hofstede (2002) PLs are more frequent in individualistic cultures such as the Netherlands, than collectivist cultures such as in China. They presented two specific reasons for collectivist (Asian) nations to choose NBs over PLs, namely that NBs lead to more status, and the preference for long term relationships and so for well known NBs. • 30. `` Atonement `` By Ian Mcewan In today s society, people often times misinterpret things we hear or we tend to make assumptions about several things such as who said what and worrying about whether or not it was true. It later becomes a major problem when these misperceptions get out of hand and are used to penalize someone for something they really didn t do. These people often times can be kids. Teens specifically tend to have open ears and observe everything. They crave gossip and secrets and they aren t able to contain themselves and keep it to themselves. Obviously it is possible that they don t understand what they hear most times, but can easily make it up or give false information. False accusations lead to difficult situations sometimes critical and can hurt... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, McEwan uses symbols alongside, motifs such as the Trials of Arabella in order to explain Briony s mindset as a child. This suggest and supports the idea that Briony being young is unable to fully grasp and understand her surroundings. To begin, in part one of Atonement we learn who each character is through the perspective of different characters. Alongside we get the unique perspective of several scenes that take place. One very important scene is the fountain scene where Robbie and Cecilia are filling a vase with water and Robbie causes the vase to slip out of Cecilia s hands breaks some pieces falling into the fountain. Cecilia acts fast and removes her clothing in order to retrieve the vase piece. Meanwhile, you have Briony wondering her room and happens to see the two conversing and is shocked to see Cecilia remove her clothes. Briony begins to assume things instantly The Triton fountain, and standing by the basin s retaining wall was her sister, and right before her was Robbie Turner. There was something rather formal about the way he stood, feet apart, head held back. A proposal of marriage. Briony would not have been surprised. She herself had written a tale in which a humble woodcutter saved a princess from drowning and ended by marrying her. What was presented here fitted well. Robbie Turner (36). • 31. The Graduate Symbolism 2006764 Ms. Szymski Composition Media 5th March, 2015 Best Picture Analysis #1 The Graduate Criteria: 1.The movie should have more to it than just pure entertainment. It should have a deeper message that will impact me in one way or another. 2.At least one character should be emotionally relatable, and the experiences that the character goes through should also be realistic and relatable. 3.There should be at least some symbolism in the movie that foreshadows an event/ multiple events. In the year 1967, Mike Nichols directed The Graduate a movie that tells the story of how Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate, gets involved in an affair with Mrs. Robinson, and then later falls in love with her daughter, Elaine deserves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first shot in the clip is a close up of the blank stare on Ben s face, against the white background of the airplane seat. This shot looks like a mugshot which symbolizes how Ben feels trapped in a prison. Next, when Ben reaches the exit of the airport, the camera stops following him, and he gets lost in the crowd, another similar situation occurs when Ben goes to Elaine s college to meet her he gets lost in the crowd. These scenes connect to the scene when his parents take him downstairs from his room to meet all the guests at the party and everyone crowds around him, leaving him with no personal space. When Ben tries to leave the party and go upstairs, a lady pulls him down. This scene symbolizes how whenever Ben tries to escape the prison or pull himself up, someone or his own anxiety and worries pull him back down. Another interesting way that Mike Nichols used symbolism is through the color scheme. He chose to use neutrals with a lot of gray and black throughout the movie the clothes, walls, rooms, carpets. The color gray is an unemotional color. It is detached, neutral, impartial and indecisive this color symbolizes how Ben is feeling throughout the movie. He seems completely detached from all the happy scenes and the only emotions he shows are of loneliness and isolation. Another way the colors were used in the movie was through the constant high contrast of black and white good versus bad, innocence versus evil. Most of the time, Mrs. Robinson is seen wearing black clothes, symbolizing her negative behavior and actions, whereas Elaine is always wearing white, and her room is all white too, symbolizing her innocence and positive ... The three perspectives on social supportare the (a) stress and coping perspective, (b) the social constructionist perspective and (b) the relationship perspective (Lakey Cohen, 2000). Hildebrand followed and crossed the alps. His stay in Germany was of amazing educative value, and helped his ruling as pope in the future. In Cologne he pursued his studies and became aware of the circles of Lorraine where interest of the church and its life was at the top. Soon he returned to Rome and served as advisor to Pope Leo IX. Should the Miranda rights be abolished? Do all of the rights for the accused handicap police and prosecutors? Is a 10 2 jury verdict close enough to unanimous for conviction? I thought yes. To me, it sounds absurd that the only way for a conviction to come through is by a 12 0 jury verdict.
