My reading of American literature is concerned with this passage by Theodore Dreiser s An
American Tragedy. It explores variety within gender roles and the American dream of the times.

view on war. In his poem The Soldier he shows war as a great way to see the world and make
new friends, when really its quite the opposite. Wilfred Owens portrays war as a thing not of
glory but of death and suffering. His poem Dulce et Decorum est shows the terror of gas attacks
and tries to convince the readers that it s really not worth dying for your country. This Essay
will argue through the use of language features and quotes how we see big differences between
views on war. Through two short poems we re shown that it s glorious and gracious to die for
your country, and then that its all a trick to get more soldiers into the terrible trenches to try and
turn the tide of the battle. Rupert Brookes has a very positive view on war. Throughout his poem
The Soldier he uses words with soft and positive connotations to show that war is really a nice
thing. If I should die, think only this of me: That there s some corner of a foreign field that is
forever England The metaphor creates the impression that when you die in war you live on

suns of home. This represents a baptism almost, showing as if when you die in war, you are
reborn. Brookes uses the metaphor and allusion to make us wonder about what would happen if
he were to pass. He shows that even if he dies he won t stop living as he will always be there in

by the chains of war. The use of all the gentle and upbeat words, gives off the feeling that war is a

Odysseus s pride and the Gods The two issues that will be discussed will be whether Odysseus s
downfall was himself or the gods. When Odysseus and his men leave to return home after the
Trojan War, the ocean currents and wind throw them off course constantly. When they land they
find themselves on an island with Cyclops roaming everywhere. Odysseus and his handpicked men
head into a cave where he helps himself to the food. After sometime the Cyclops that resides in
that cave returns and traps them. Being hungry the Cyclops eats two of the men. Odysseus then
devises a plan to escape; he gets the Cyclops drunk on the wine he receive from a priest he saved,
next Odysseus says his name is nobody, then he takes a sharpened olive branch and blinds the

simply as aesthetic objects, but rather as texts which function when read by their audience within a

write Jo s Boys because her readers wanted to know what happened to all of the little girls that

works. The Big Bang Theory and the Steady State Theory are constantly compared using evidence
collated thus far by scientists and astrologists. By using this evidence, experts are creating a picture
of how the universe came about along with scenarios as to what happened in the beginning and
what is happening now. Through the use of this evidence, the schools of thought are increasingly
favouring one of the abovementioned theories.

The big bang theory is the main theory about understanding the universes life. This theory states
that the universe was once a hot dense ball of matter that exploded and scattered all of the
