3. Double Indemnity Adaptation Essay

10 December 2015
The Adaption of Double Indemnity Although adaptions are not a new form of entertainment, recent
trends show that the many books that are forced to change to film tend to provoke criticism and
debate. This type of attitude was definitely prevccalent in the film Double Indemnity directed by Billy
Wilder. This was because it was adapted from the novella by James Cain which held the same title.
Substantial differences from the novella made the film a richer and better depicted story for the
audience. It is agreeable that the nature of the adaption was made so that it would be easily understood
by the audiences it was going to be viewed by. The novella Double Indemnity was first published in
1934 and was James Cain s second novel. The entire novella is told in first person point of view, by
the criminal Walter Huff in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film was similar to the movie in the point of view aspect because both were told by first person
criminal, Walter Neff. The film keeps the confessional criminal aspect of narration, but changes the
order of events by revealing that Walter is a murderer from the beginning. This makes the film
adaption depict a different view of the story from the very beginning rather than letting it unfold like
in the novella. This serves to angle audiences in a way that Wilder wanted as well as emphasizing the
despair at the center of the story. The characters in the film are basically unfolding their predetermined
destiny which is different from the novella. Walter Huff and Phyllis Nirdlinger, the main characters of
the book, become Walter Neff and Phyllis Dietrichson in the film. In the film, they do devise a scheme
to murder Phyllis s husband and cash out on the rewards of his life insurance policy. The actual dollar
amount varies, but there are far more important differences than that.

I stumbled through the house, trying to get away, my red hair replaced with fire, but not
burning me, igniting the house around me. I woke up gasping for air, wondering why I ve been
having the same recurring nightmare ever since my parents died in a fire when I was six. It s

was the day I could leave this house. Don t get me wrong, living in a huge mansion with a pool

I blinked away my dizziness and slowly sat up, realizing I was sprawled across
the floor, a normal result of my flashbacks. I hauled myself up and went downstairs to get some
breakfast before my cousins, Scarlett, Alex, and Gemma realized I had another flashback. They
definitely wouldn t let me go to find the killers if they knew I kept having flashbacks. Once I got
to the kitchen, I realized our chef wasn t awake to make breakfast because it was 4 o clock in the

8. The Black Man And Bob Ewell, A White, Poor Man
In To Kill a Mockingbird , Harper Lee says, Mockingbirds just make music. They don t eat up people
s gardens; don t nest in corncribs; they don t do one thing but sing their hearts out. That s why it s a sin
to kill a mockingbird (8). She implies that some humans are convicted and seen as danger but in
reality they are the opposite. She writes this book in 1960, where the civil rights of humans are just
about being settled in communities. In the town of Maycomb, the black community and white
community get along in the sense that they do not too. The whites are skeptical of the blacks and they
assume their own thoughts on them, of race. She writes about these young men, both of different
colors but still are victimized by society. Tom robinson, a black man and Bob Ewell, a white, poor
man. These two men are different but they are treated differently because of what society observes of
them. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the author Frederick details the trajectory of his
life because he was a slave. The society is injustice towards him because of his skin and his social
class. he is a worker and an illiterate person to them. These characters come together as subhumans,
who are victimized by society, causing them come across their true worth. In To Kill a Mockingbird,
Lee describes the injustice of Tom Robinson by the white community. He is convicted of a rape of a
white female in Maycomb. In court, the jury is of all white and in 1930 s segregation

Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the
strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to
war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave

fought battles to protect and serve for their country. Some men become injured at war and others don t

stories to the common people about their experiences. Two intriguing Wars are the American Civil

South regions within each country. The Civil War and the Vietnam War were never declared wars but
still managed to divide nations and families. During these wars, many people died defending their

11. The Future Of DNA Forensics
Forensics science has had a huge impact on today s legal system making it much easier to identify and
put away criminals. Before being able to identify people by their DNA the court heavily relied on
eyewitness accounts. This was not always the best option seeing that these accounts were not always
accurate. Now however forensics are able to find out someone s identity through something as simple
as a hair follicle. With this new technology not only is it easier prove someone s guilt, it is also easier
to prove one s innocence. For example, Kirk Bloodsworth was sentenced two life sentences in prison
for murder and sexual assault, and after spending 9 years in prison was exonerated by DNA found at
the crime scene proving his innocence. DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thanks to the database it is now simple to identify someone by what they left behind at the crime
scene. In 100 years however how much more could DNA forensics improve? With this technology
crime rates are sure to go down a and protecting citizens will become a much easier task for law
enforcement. Though today there is the drawback of someone committing a crime and not being in the
DNA database this could possibly be fixed in the future. What if through DNA found at the crime
scene we were able to discover physical characteristic of the culprit through DNA. If this were
possible the police would be able to have a physical description of the criminal even if they are not in
the database. Another advancement that could be made in the future is the joining of separate
databases. If databases from other countries were to join together it would make it much easier to find
criminals who have escaped to different

This political study will define the reemergence of nationalism due to the failed economic policies of

by the European Union, which had dominated much of Britain s global objectives in the world
economy. However, the problematic banking issues of the European Central bank (ECB) and the
bankruptcy of certain nation states, such as Ireland, Greece, and Portugal, have inspired a new
nationalist movement in England to leave the EU. The Brexit Vote, held on June 23rd, 2016, defined a

These political trends reveal the underlying trend in nationalism as part of the growing problem of
economic inequality, which was devastating the British economy for the greater masses of working
people. The lack of resolution for the economic recession brought about a public reaction to policies
related to nationalistic objectives, which were dominated by populist sentiment: At a time when so
many Europeans are faced with unemployment, uncertainty and growing inequality (200). Certainly,
the vote for Brexit defines the underlying re reemergence of nationalism as a political option in the
opposition of failed EU economic policies.
The Brexit Vote also defined a complex new set of nationalist principles, which were based on the
turning back the clock of racial identity in the pre EU global order. For instance, the re emergence of
nationalism was also being defined by a the Anglo Saxon purity of cultural and racial traditions, which
undermined the tensions behind the Brexit Vote. In this manner, the perception of job losses in
England also exacerbated racial tensions in relation to the immigration crisis across Europe. Many
British citizens felt that a lack of regulatory process in EU immigration policy threatened their job
security due to the lower wages being paid for immigrant worker:

PTEN can be expressed in bacteria such as E.coli or in mammalian cell culture such as human

lower cost, and well understood genome and proteome system. However, the bacterial expression
system express unfunctional protein that lack the proper folding beside that there is a risk of

Exchanges are organizations that create a marketplace for buyers and sellers to come together and

17. Effects Of Social Stratification In The Great Gatsby
The impact of prevailing social stratification is multi dimensional in the novel. It is noted that social
stratification has great effects on racism. We find that Tom is a racist, and his racist attitude is due to
his high social status. He attacks Gatsby and questions about his fake claim of an Oxford graduate to
break the intimacy between her wife Daisy and Gatsby. He knows that revealing the truth is the only
way to create a negative impact on Daisy s mind about Gatsby. Another interpretation can be taken
from Tom s behavior is that Tom shows his aristocratic, rude and arrogant attitude. Indicating Gatsby
as a bootlegger , Mr. Nobody , he shows hardly any sympathy and courtesy to Gatsby. His attitude
toward Gatsby in such way would be impossible if he belongs to an inferior class. Tom is also proud
of his Nordic race . His intention is to neglect the inferior people for their skin color. He is not a man
to take any change easily. He cannot think of intermarriage between black and white (Fitzgerald 103).
Even Nick shows his racist behavior, pointing to the passengers three modish Negroes . Racism
toward the blacks is found, and this reaction of Nick is because of his social status as an American.
Tom does not hesitate to cancel his wife s whiteness for his cruel racism. Social class and status have
close connections in making love, affair, and sexual pursuit. The love between Daisy and Gatsby in
their early life is the outcome of their social class and status.

Most of the penguins form new pair bonds each year, which means that they mate with another

there are more female penguins than male penguins, there will be major competitions to get a female.
To attract females, the male penguin will stand still, put their head on their chest, inhales, and give out
a courtship call. They keep this position for a few seconds before moving to another position. To nest,
both penguins travel to a colonial nesting area at around March or early April and lay a single egg in
May or early June. The single egg weighs about 460 or 467g. Once they lay an egg, the male penguin
is in charge of incubating the egg while the female penguins go back to an area to obtain food. The job
of the male penguin is to keep the egg protected from any danger and they also have to keep the egg

To make matters worse, when Andersen found problems in the financial statements, they didn t make

contemplated dropping Enron as a client, but did not follow through with it. Because the audit and

22. 72 Hour Hold By Bebe Moore Campbell Essay
Life is a daring adventure. Throughout the lifespan, one will encounter many rewarding and
challenging experiences. For example, during one s youth, balancing academics and maintaining
healthy relationships with both family and friends is perplexing. Nevertheless, imagine adding another
element on top of the boat load of responsibilities and expectations that growing up beckons mental
illness. In 72 Hour Hold by Bebe Moore Campbell, the main character, Trina, truly defines how much
of a rollercoaster life can be. As told through her mother s perspective, one will learn that Trina is a
eighteen year old female of African American decent and resides with her mother in Los Angeles,
California. Trina s parents, Keri and Clyde, provide their daughter with an upper/upper middle class
lifestyle due to her father s sudden successful career and her mother s successful resale clothing
business in Los Angeles. This well rounded and beautiful adolescent has recently graduated from high
school with high grades and was accepted to Brown University, however, due to her summer manic
episodes, Trina has not attended college yet. After her high school graduation, Trina began
experiencing manic episodes. These episodes consisted of Trina lashing out in various ways. Some
moments within the book described Trina as verbally and physically abusive towards her mother,
destructive by smashing glass cups, extreme paranoia, and wild nights out involving joints or alcohol.

23. The Physics of a Golf Ball Essay
The Physics of a Golf Ball
The first written reference of golf was in 1457. Golf balls have had extraordinary changes since that
time; they ve gone from leather pouches to dried gum to today s dimpled balls. These dimples help
decrease the drag and increase the lift. Different forces are applied to the golf ball when struck by the
club. Golf clubs have grooves to create backspin. And then there are different variables that affect how
a golf ball will travel, these include: lie angle and the shaft length. A golfer must never forget about
the wind factor . And last but not least , a golfer must flat out use his own judgment in the game of
golf. The game of golf has a science all of it s own, and even the best players have ... Show more

Therefore, the Gutta percha ball arrived on the scene in 1848 to take on the role of smooth, solid, dried
gum from the Malaysian sapodilla tree. These guttie balls had two negatives; they sometimes broke
into pieces as some modern solid balls have been known to do and they did not fly as well as the
feather balls. None the less, as these balls were used their surfaces became roughened. Players soon
realized, however, that cut up balls flew further and the concept of dimples was born. But why are
dimples purposely molded into the modern day golf ball? This question deals with the way that air
affects the flight of a spinning object (or aerodynamics if you will) and that s the bottom line.
Moreover, two simple principles will be discussed in great detail hereafter: lift and drag. Let s not run
faster than we are able though. Before we get on a rampage let s look at what experience has taught us
about a spinning ball. A British scientist in 1887, Professor P.G. Tait owns all the credit to the findings
concerning the importance of spin on the flight of a golf ball. He relates that in his youth he was
taught that all spin is detrimental and he practiced assiduously to master the art of hitting a ball almost
free of spin. After many complex and frustrating experiences, Professor Tait states clearly that, a ball
driven with spin about a horizontal axis with the top of the ball coming toward the golfer,

A Century of Physics
By the end of the nineteenth century after more than two thousand years of intellectual struggle that
began with the Greek philosophers, physical scientists had reason to believe that they were beginning
to understand the universe. Their theories of matter and energy, of electricity and magnetism, of heat
and sound and light were confirmed in laboratories throughout the world with increasing precision.
Experimentation was the method and mathematics the language of a powerful coherent body of
knowledge called classical physics. For a few years before and after the turn of the century, the world

The chance discovery of radioactivity finally signaled the beginning of a new era in physics. As the
element polonium, identified by Polish born Marie Curie in 1898, emits radiation it changes
spontaneously into lead. This discovery shattered the belief inherited from the Greeks that the
elements are immutable and their atoms indestructible.
What causes atoms to decay?
What are they made of?
What forces are at work inside them?
Such questions were new to physics, and were to remain at its cutting edge throughout the twentieth
century. The answers would affect our lives in ways no one could imagine in the year of 1900.
The twentieth century began with a flurry of innovations such as the airplane, the mass produced
automobile, and transatlantic radio communication. They transformed the world, but the changes
sweeping over physics at the same time were far more radical. Those brought about not just different
lifestyles, but new ways of thinking. Modern physics grew out of classical physics and rest of three
pillars: the quantum theory, which describes atoms and their nuclei, Special Relativity, which deals
with the relationship between space and time and General Relativity, which explains gravity. The latter
two were the sole creations of Albert Einstein and even the former received a crucial

Another technique that was developed was perspective. Perspective was formed with the creation of
the vanishing point to make paintings more realistic. Masaccio was one of the great painters of his
time because of his skill of recreating lifelike figures and movement, along with portraying a sense of
three dimensionality. One of Masaccio s greatest paintings is the Holy Trinity which was painted in
1427. This painting has a great use of perspective and chiaroscuro to show realism. Chiaroscuro was
another technique that was formed to show light and dark intensities to give the impression of depth
and texture as well as a source of light. With the use of different shades of colour, sfumato was a new
technique that emerged during this time that produces soft, imperceptible transitions between colours
and tones to show blending and oneness. These techniques established a basis of modern art. These
techniques are still used till this day and have shaped the way art is currently produced.
Along with the different kinds of techniques of art, a shift in artistic themes occurred due to a change
in the artist s perception of life and their values. The Renaissance is an era that was home to some of
the most influential artists of all time Michelangelo Buonarotti, Raffaello Sanzio, and Leonardo di

In her article Negation as a Stylistic Feature in Joseph Heller s Catch 22: A Corpus Study , Laura
Hidalgo Downing collects data on, analyzes, and interprets the use of negation in Catch 22. Negation,
she hypothesizes, is used much more frequently by Joseph Heller in his novel than is average for other
modern pieces of American and English literature. In addition, Downing believes that Heller uses
certain types of negation more frequently than other authors, and that this is what makes Catch 22 s
satirical humor stand out so prominently. Overall, Downing s article would be moderately helpful if it
were included in a college textbook on Catch 22. While the article does a fantastic job explaining the
concept of negation where it is present in Catch 22, it does not do much to explain why understanding
negation is necessary for fully comprehending the novel.
In her article, Laura Downing describes her work analyzing negation in Catch 22. A large amount of
the article described the method by which Downing compiled her statistics on the frequency of
negation in Heller s novel. The first thing that Downing had to consider while doing this was what
types of negation were more likely to be used in Catch 22. Such a thing is actually quite difficult to
do, as Catch 22 is a work of fiction. If Downing was analyzing an academic journal, then she could
focus primarily on searching for analytic negation (which uses the term not ), which is most common
in formal texts. On the other

of causes for the Protestant reformation. The causes of the reformation will be analyzed from two
different perspectives: Germany s causes and Europe s causes. The results of reformation will be
examined. Major contributors such as Martin Luther and John Calvin s perspectives and contributions
will also be analyzed and the impact they had during their time period.
People in Europe during the early 16th century faced a lot personal grievances with the church. This
provoked a reformation which is known as the Protestant reformation. The reformation began in 1517,
and ended in 1648. The ideas of people such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Henry VIII caught
several peoples eye because of this. They provided different views, and ideas that many never thought
about. Europe and Germany had different reasons for the reformation, and because of this had
different outcomes.
Martin Luther was a german university professor and a priest who challenged some of the church s
doctrines. Mr. Luther was concerned with sin and penance for those sins; he challenged the idea of
buying indulgences, which were believed to bring forgiveness for all sins. Luther wrote Ninety five
Theses on the Power of Indulgences ; which stated that indulgences undermined the seriousness of the

will allow children and youth to be confortable and acceptant in their gender roles. Allowing a child to

The Affects of the Use of Alternative Sources
Miguel Pereira
Gwynedd Mercy University
Abstract Alternative sources are often published as nuclear, solar, wind, and also hydroelectric energy.
These types of energy are given to us in the United States and the world to help us live a better and
healthier life. Alternative energy is much cleaner and also more efficient than the fossil fuel energy
that we use now. These types of energies can provide a much higher impact towards environment,
economy, and society. As people we need to find out how we can use these energies to benefit us and

If designed correctly, buildings could capture the sun s heat in the winter and possibly minimize it in
the summer, while using the daylight year round. The designs for these buildings are in such a way
that utilizes passive solar energy a resource that can be tapped without mechanical means to help heat,
cool, or light up a building (Union of Concerned Scientists). Other than using design features to
maximize the use of the sun, some buildings have systems that actively gather and store solar energy.
Solar collectors, for example, sit on top of buildings to collect solar energy for space heating, water
heating, and space cooling (Union of Concerned Scientists). They are mostly designed as pipes in a
box carry liquids that transfer the heat from the box into the buildings. They are usually painted black
on the inside and are covered by glass. Solar collectors like desiccant evaporators are used to pull
moisture out of the air. Solar collectors were popular in the early 1980s, in the aftermath of the energy
crisis (Union of Concerned Scientists). In the 19484, for example, 16 million square feet of collectors
were sold in the United States, but when fossil fuel prices dropped and tax credits expired in the mid
1980s, demand for solar collectors plummeted (Union of Concerned Scientists). The future of solar
energy technology is poised for significant growth in the 21st century (Union of Concerned
Scientists). It has been said that more

burst episodes. Market insiders said that this lack of confidence following the ongoing liquidity crisis
in the market is due to lower participation of investors. This upward and downward swing is a
characteristic feature of the market and is termed as stock market volatility.
The year 2010 was noticed as the abnormal bullish trend with all the barometers touched the historical
height, consequences has been happened in year 2011 as all the barometers gone to the bearish
condition. As a result most of the individual investors who are the middle class earning investors lost
their valuable money.
Most of the time, the collapse is attributed by the negative attitude of investors, liquidity crisis, insider
trading, placement shares, stock split, omnibus account, strong manipulation and money whitening.
Hence general investors have lost confidence on the capital market an they are the victims. It is true
that the market does not move on its own accord, there are forces

Earnings and earnings per share are not affected by the dividend payout.
Another option Linear Technology has to exercise its excess cash balance, they can repurchase shares
to increase the value of the firm. This repurchase option is beneficial to the company and shareholders
because in an open market share repurchase has no effect on the stock price. In addition, by
repurchasing shares the firm s earnings and earnings per share will increase. As shown in Exhibit B,
by calculating the total numbers of shares repurchased (total cash balance/price per share) and
subtracting it from the number of shares outstanding will give us the number of shares left outstanding
after the repurchase to be 261,703,052. Exhibit B shows how this decrease in the number of shares
drove up the earnings per share value by $0.10 from $0.55 to $0.65. When the company repurchases
shares instead of paying out in special dividends, the firm s value will increase and it also allows the
firm to retain its cash reserves within the company.
In general, companies pay dividends for a number of reasons. Dividends provide certainty about the
company s financial well being. Many investors prefer the steady and secure income that comes with
dividends and see dividends as strength in the company and a sign of future positive earnings.
Dividend initiators tend to be large and stable firms with low growth rates

48. Epicurus Vs Aristotle
What s the one thing everyone wants to achieve in life and is the ultimate end for every action people
do? Philosophers from almost every generation are trying to figure out what that is, some even
referring to it as the good . But what is the good ? Epicurus would argue that the good is simply
pleasure, honor, and glory; however, that is not the ultimate end for every action people do. According
to Aristotle, the ultimate end that every action seeks is happiness and that s the good everyone desires.
The idea of happiness being the ultimate end, is superior to Epicurus s idea of pleasure, honor, and
glory, due to the fact that all those things are intended to bring forth some form of happiness.
Therefore, happiness must be what everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
