Themes Of Sandra Cisneros
Readers of Sandra Cisneros are able to identify major themes throughout her work. She makes these
themes evident because growing up she experienced some of the feelings and emotions that her
characters do, which is why she is able to write with such passion. Displacement and isolation are two
themes that Cisneros makes evident in her work. Readers will see these themes in Woman Hollering
Creek, Mericans, and Eleven. In Woman Hollering Creek isolation and displacement play a big part in
the main character, Cleofilas , life. She marries a man whom she believes she is going to be with
forever, however that is not the case when her husband decides to do things to her no husband should
ever do. Cleofilas tries to pretend that everything that happens to her is normal by faking everything
she does and feels. At the ice house where many people come to have a beer Cleofilas goes to
accompany her husband because if she does not she will be seen as a bad wife. [...] she is invited and
accompanies her husband, sits mute beside their conversation, waits and sips a beer until it grows
warm, twists a napkin into a knot, then another into a fan, one into a rose, nods her head, smiles,
yawns, politely grins, laughs at the appropriate moments [...] (Cisneros 223). She feels so out of place
that instead of trying to make conversation she would rather stay off to the side and pretend like
everything is fine. Cleofilas first longs to experience the American Dream, if there is such a thing,

Third Court Case Analysis
The Third Circuit erred in finding VHI have third party standing, and his lower court s decision should
be reversed. In general, litigants do not have a standing to assert the rights of others, unless the litigant
meet the constitutional and prudential requirement of third party standing. Litigants does not meet
constitutional limitation of third party standing unless they sustain or will sustain injury that is actual
and imminent. Steel Co. v. Citizens for a Better Environment, 523 U.S. 83, 108 (1998). Moreover,
Litigants does not meet prudential requirement of third party standing unless litigants share a close
relationship with the right holders, or unless the right holders have a genuine obstacle to sue by their
own. Amato v. Wilentz, 952 F.2d 742, 749 (3rd Cir. 1991). Under this analysis, VHI does not have a
third party standing because VHI does not meet either constitutional or prudential requirement of third
party standing. A. VHI Does Not Meet the Constitutional Requirement of Third Party Standing

The word Measurement is an often used term in the field of mathematics, science, technology,
quantitative research and many more other disciplines. Measurement can simply be understood as the
process of measuring, quantifying or estimating something in monetary terms. The most commonly
measurement units used in general are kilogram, metre, candela, mole, second, ampere and kelvin.
However, in accounting field measurement has its own specific definition which means that it is a
process of determining the monetary amounts by recognising the elements of the financial statements
and carrying them in the income statement and balance sheet. In the presentation, I described about
the measurement definition, mixed measurement model, advantages and disadvantages of
measurement models, identification of different measurement models, brief definition of the models
historical cost, current cost, fair value, present value and deprival value, explanation of the principles
of measurement and also I used the examples of the biological assets to provide information on how

Children Of Dust By Ali Eteraz
Children Of Dust Ali Eteraz is a smart and thoughtful writer. He also has a way of adding a bit of
comedic value in his writings when needed. His book Children of Dust is a memoir of his life in
Pakistan and America. This book also reads more like a story as opposed to a book that just states
facts. This book Children Of Dust is broken down into five parts. Each one of these parts signify a
different name he takes for himself. Meaning, each of these names or parts identify a certain stage in
his life, that he comes to terms with something. Such as Pakistan, Islam, and America and how he
belongs to each.
The first part of this book is called The Promised Abir ul Islam. This means the Perfume of Islam, and
is about Ali as a child in Pakistan, who learns of his destiny and attends a maraca (Eteraz, 1). Before
Ali was born, his father enters a mannat, or a Covenant with God. He said that if God were to give
him a son, then he would promise that the family will become a great leader and a servant of Islam.
After Ali was born, his mother went to Hajj and brought Ali with her. She then rubbed the baby s chest
on the wall of the Ka ba in Mecca. This was a way for him to be blessed by God, or Allah. He grew up
in a small Pakistan village and has fond memories of his family. However, he did grow up in a strict
Muslim household. After a brief but hard madrassa education, this chapter in his life is over. His
father, who is a doctor, gets a work visa to

characters we are able to see bonds grow, different relationships develop and loyalty through belief.
The idea of the parent child bond is specially depicted through two who go by the names of
Chingachgook and Uncas. Both these characters play roles in the idea of loyalty. Another relationship

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Summary Chapter 12
During the fourth chapter of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the journey towards the Green Chapel
commences. Sir Gawain is escorted by a member of the Red Manor, who gives the knight a heed of
warning. The escort offers advice to not travel to the Green Chapel, and if he chose this path, the
escort would not tell of his fleeing. Sir Gawain thanks the escort for his warning but tells him that he
has to keep his word, otherwise he would become a coward. The chapel was almost missed, if it not
for Sir Gawain noticing a rounded hillock on the bank of a stream, near the bed of a torrent that
tumbled there (Sir Gawain 2172 73). Sir Gawain entered the mound, which was the entrance to the
chapel. Here, he met up with the Green Knight. This is where he reached the end of his quest and was
destined to receive his blow to the neck. Sir Gawain moved away from the first attempt, which caused
the Knight to suspect that he was not the true knight of the quest. After a dialogue was exchanged
between the two, the Green Knight struck a blow to Sir Gawain, which only nicked his neck. The
Green Knight told him that his wife was Morgan, whom Gawain spent time with in the Manor, and
she was sent to test Gawain. The Green Knight called Sir Gawain one of the most perfect men who
ever walked on the earth (Sir Gawain 2363). Sir Gawain replied in anger, saying that he was not a
virtuous knight, therefore he doesn t deserve such a remark. Sir Gawain was sent back to Arthur s

What Is Luck Is A Matter Of Preparation Meeting Opportunity
Oprah Winfrey once said, Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity. What Oprah means by
this statement is that hard work and effort are the key to meeting opportunity. When someone
succeeds and another fails, it is not because of how lucky either of them were, but how much of an
effort each of them had made. I agree with Oprah Winfrey because hard work and effort are more
important.
First, opportunity is rare to come by making it better to have the experience of taking. Experience
gives people an advantage over the other, the more of it one has, the better their chances. For example,
Oprah Winfrey went through countless interviews while working for small television companies and
every time she failed she only gained the experience in doing better next time. Now look at her, she is
one of the riches women in the world living the dream life. Gaining experience allows us to expand
our perception of what we see. The bigger our viewpoint is the more ideas we develop and the greater
an asset we become, increasing the chances of being successful.
Second, preparation, it can only be beneficial and advantageous. Preparation increases the chances of
being successful. Furthermore there is no harm in being prepared. For example, studying for a test will
increase the odds of gaining a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

without any skills, experience or attitude in moving along you will just end right back at square one
depending on luck. This is why we need the motive to work whether it may be internal motivation or
external motivation it does not matter. Motivation allows us to work towards our goals slowly making

students come from different backgrounds and represent various ages, ethnicities, economics,
weaknesses, and strengths. Many adult students are here for the second time after failing initially and
have fears about their abilities to complete their studies. Although most students have used on campus
resources, some may need assistance from other adult students successful in completing their

Here is proof that David is an ignorant and uninspired ensigiejsokhjc. He refuses to accept the teacher

night on complete the sentence exercises. The author realizes that he could have spent less time but he
was determined not to be identified by the teacher as lazy. Despite the teacher s abuse and Sedaris
experiences of fear and discomfort speaking French, he tries to be active in the community. He visits a
neighborhood store, converses with the concierge, and talks to the butcher. Positive outcomes are the
rewards of being active in your studies. The author puts in the time and reaps the rewards of
understanding French. Adult students who spend extra time on homework can also reap those rewards.
Sedaris third step is to interact socially with classmates. The author is one of the several classmates

Should School Uniforms Be Mandatory In Primary And...
I believe school uniforms should be mandatory in primary and secondary schools because it relieves
discrimination and students. School is a place to learn, not to exhibit fashion, wealth or privilege.
Unfortunately, now kids spend so much time being stressed about popularity that they hardly have the
energy to learn anything valuable.
Parents as well can benefit because buying uniforms is much cheaper and less stressful than spending
large amounts of money and time purchasing varied clothes, usually for more than one child at a time.
It is cheaper to wear school uniforms because you only have to buy one or two sets of clothes for the
entire year, whereas most people buy up to 20 outfits in a uniform free school. School uniforms take
the pressure off students to pay top dollar for clothes, according to Reginald Wilson, a senior scholar
at the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. I think it does lower the cost of clothes,
and kids don t emphasize clothes as much when they re all wearing the same thing, Wilson said.
Certainly the competition to wear the best shoes or the best sweaters and so forth has been prevalent in
school ever since I was in school, and the poor kids felt inferior. Therefore, when all students are
dressed alike, competition between students over clothing choices and the teasing of those who are
dressed in less expensive or less fashionable outfits can be eliminated. It also really helps to get up in
the morning and not have to think about

Emotional Intelligence In Healthcare Leaders
Daniel Goleman an author and phycologist once cited that if our emotional abilities aren t in hand and
we do not possess self awareness as well as not able to manage our distressing emotions and if we can
t have empathy as well as effective relationships, then no matter how smart we are, we are not going
to get very far(Goleman, 1995).
Harnessing ones emotions is having emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the capability to
recognize and regulate one s own mental state and the emotions of others. For a leader to control their

The capacity to accurately distinguish your own feelings and those of others will end up being a
quality that can help in the success of an organization. Health leaders with emotional intelligence who
harness self awareness will help them to understand their team, be reasonable with regards to solving
any problems. The value of possessing emotional intelligence will put health leaders in a mindset of
concentrating on results and make them adaptable to change.
Emotional Intelligence has affected leaders in making them actual change agents which is a key
characteristic and part of being an effective leader. People with a high degree of emotional intelligence
know what they re feeling, what their emotions mean, and how these emotions can affect other people
(The Mind Tools Editorial Team).
What good outcome has come from a leader who has no control of his emotions and screams at his
employees to do what he wants? A leader with emotional intelligence will use a more effective
approach. Let s take for example a business personal with high EI Jeff Bezos CEO of Amazon is

New England Colonies Dbq
Alex Pang Mr. Eliason AP United States History 7 September 2015 Behind its neighbors, England
finally decided to invest in settling in the New World during the 17th century. Many of the expeditions
to North America were made by private organizations; stock companies and the rich alike shared a
common ideal of having a fresh start from outside their homeland. Two colonies with one common
nationality, however, became two diverse establishments in North America. The colonies in New
England and the Chesapeake region developed into two substantially contrasting ways of life. The
main colony in the New England region was Massachusetts, which included the Puritans, a group of

The Puritanical colony of Massachusetts Bay was founded in 1630, and was born from the mindset of
purifying the Church of England. Most people who voyaged from their motherland were families and
their servants (Doc B). Lists of those who emigrated contain upwards of forty families. Also, in the
Articles of Agreement of Springfield, Massachusetts everyone shared the planting ground (Doc D).
Since the community shared most of the farmland, greed would not be an issue when deciding who
would get what plot of land. Further, Puritans believed we must entertain each other [with care, and]
must be willing to [bridge ourselves] . . . [to supply for] others necessities (Doc A). The community
theme the Massachusetts people embody is further seen in family relying upon family. Differing from
the New England list of emigrants, most Virginia bound colonists were men who failed to bring their
families or men who did not have families (Doc C). Many of the men aboard were jewelers,
goldsmiths, and other tradesmen who believed they were going to become wealthy at their new
colony. Captain John Smith recounts [many of the worst among us were gold seekers] with their

Jamestown settlers stole their land in hope of uncovering gold in the area. With community not being

Essay Fallacies in the Movie High Noon
HIGH NOON FALLACIES
High Noon, a western film mostly respected by conservative viewers, and endlessly ranked over by
critics. This was an exciting movie considering it was a black and white film. The whole movie was
about the loyalty of a town marshal named Kane and the betrayal of the town. After watching High
Noon, there were a lot of fallacies that were depicted through out the movie such as begging the
question, ad hominem, slippery slope, and Inconsistency. The characters in the movie do a great job at
portraying each of these fallacies. At the beginning of the movie, as Kane and Amy are riding away
for their honeymoon, Kane stops the prairie and claims that he has to go back and states this is crazy .
When Amy questions Kane ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the scene, when Kane asks for volunteer deputies, one of the Individual s gets up and says,
Ain t it true, that Kane no longer a marshal and isn t it true there is personal trouble between him and
Miller? This is another great example of Ad Hominem because once again another individual is
attacking Kane s character rather than tackling the issue that Kane is making in the scene. The
Individual s argument is rejected on the basis of irrelevant fact about Kane. In a key scene, where
characters in the church debate the pros and cons of helping the marshal, the case is finally made
against Kane by the Mayor with the economic rationalist argument that a gunfight in the streets would
be bad for business and the North wont send money for stores and factories. I believe this scene is a
good example of a slippery slope fallacy because the mayor is using fear of gunfire in streets to
support his idea of North not sending money for stores and factories. The Mayor is not using a good
argument/ reason to support his idea. There is no evidence provided that north won t send money
because of gunfire between Kane and Miller. Towards the end of the film, inconsistency in characters
seems to develop. In the scene, where herb shows up at the jail house ready to fight along side Kane
changes his mind after he finds out that it will be just him and Kane fighting against Miller and his
posse. Herb states, it isn t that I don t want out...I volunteered but this is not what you

Power Leads to Corruption
Power makes individuals corrupt
Corruption is when people in positions of entrusted power abuse their power for their own personal
gains [or to fulfill the agendas of the group they represent] (Transparency International). Lord Acton, a
nineteenth century historian, argued that power is the root cause of corruption. The more power one
has, the more corrupt one is likely to become ( Biography of Lord Acton. ). Although some
commentators argue that there is no correlation between power and corruption, however Lord Acton
was right because power makes individuals egocentric, makes the powerful less sympathetic towards
those who are inferior, and makes a person hypocrite.
First of all, power is such a tool that it makes individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They instead increased their own budgets as compared to the last budget and all of this was at the cost
of low subsidies on essential food items, electricity and other the necessities of life (Ali, Kalbe. Areas
That Matter Most. ). Hence a logical conclusion that follows is that powerful individuals use their
power for their personal gains and are not concerned about the effect of their doings on the society.
Another major reason because of which power tends to corrupt is that people with absolute power
usually become less sympathetic towards those with no or less power and do not consider the
perspective of other individuals. Adam Galinsky, a psychologist at Northwestern University conducted
a series of experiments to find whether powerful individual give importance to others or not. As part
of the experiment, Galinsky asked the participants to write letter E on their forehead. The results of the
experiment showed that participant who were primed with the feeling of power wrote E backward,
when seen by another person (Lehrer, Jonah. How Power Corrupts. ). This experiment clearly shows
how powerful individuals see the world through their own eyes and do not care for what other view.
Besides this, example from history also proves the point

How Did Charles Darwin Impact Society

Charles Darwin
Many people get involved in negative aspects in life. Nowadays, it is all about violence and robberies.
To some people, the world is seen as a bad place to be because of all the negative minded people and
the impact they leave on others. Fortunately, not all people are negative minded; the world has good
people who do positive things to impact the world. In fact, Charles Darwin is a prime example of a
good person who made a positive impact on the world. Darwin signed to become a naturalist, came up
with the theory of evolution, and he also wrote a book, Origin of Species by Means of Natural
Selection explaining his life s work. It is important that people know and understand the importance of
Darwin and the theory of Evolution and Natural Selection. Darwin was an English naturalist.
According to an article, Darwin established that all species of life have descended over time from
common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted
from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect
to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin s theory of Evolution and Natural
Selection shows how humans developed from one stage to the next. According to the article Darwin s
Theory of Evolution: The Origin of Species by Parmentier, Romain and Probert, Carly, Darwin came

This experiment was first designed to investigate how people would conform to the roles of guard and
prisoner in a role playing exercise that simulated prison life (Mcleod 1). Zimbardo was interested in
learning about whether the brutality in the prisons was because of the behavior of the guards towards
the prisoners or if it was because of the prison environment. He beginned his experiment by placing an
ad in the newspaper calling out for males that were willing to be part of the experiment, 70 individuals
answered the ad. Every individual had to go through a background check to check for mental issues or
past drug or alcohol use. In the end only 24 students were chosen (McLeod). The prisoners were
treated just like they would be treated at a your average prison. Half of the 24 students that were
selected were prisoners and the other half were the guards. The guards had no specific direction as to
how to treat the prisoners, Guards were instructed to do whatever they thought was necessary to
maintain law and order in the prison and to command the respect of the prisoners. No physical
violence was permitted Mcleod 11). As the days went on the prison began to seem and become more
like a real life one was. The guards began to become more aggressive in order to maintain control over
the inmates. Some of the prisoners began to show early signs of depression by the third day. Although
the experiment was supposed to go on for a longer period of time, it had to be cancelled on the sixth
day. This concluded that People will readily conform to the social roles they are expected to play,
especially if the roles are as strongly stereotyped as those of the prison guards (Mcleod

How Did The U.s. Expand Westward And What Was Its Impact...
PURPOSE 1
Question: How did the U.S. expand westward and what was its impact on Native Americans?
Answer: The United States began expanding westward during the 1800s. During the early 1800s,
America turned its attention towards the exploration and settlement of its Western territory. The
amount of land had been greatly increased by the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which almost doubled
the size of the nation. Later on, the size of the United States increased yet again with the Mexican
Cession and the Gadsden Purchase. From these, the United States gained California, Nevada, Utah,
Texas, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Settlers swept westward,
encouraged by the federal government. The government created the Homestead Act, which offered
160 acres of cheap land in the West under the condition that the settlers had to work the land for 5
years. As the Western territories became more and more developed, Native Americans and their
culture were slowly destroyed through laws such as the Indian Removal Act and the Dawes Act.
Native Americans were forced onto small reservations and their children were then forcibly
assimilated into white American culture in order to make room for the white settlers.
PURPOSE 2
Question: Why did nations desire to expand and gain power through imperialism?
Answer: There were many philosophies about the way that America should interact with other
countries. Some people felt that America should remain isolationist, avoiding

Themes In Fahrenheit 451
Books are irreplaceable parts of society that help to form the opinions and beliefs of the people that
are within it. Without books we would lack the knowledge of those in the past, and the ability to see
the world from a different perspective. Each book contains information different from the last, but
each book is written with a purpose. Each book is written for a reason, and what we are able to obtain
from the books that we have been given reflect the person that we are. Without books we would be
lost as people, as members within the community, and as a society as a whole we would be searching
for something that we can not find. We would be hopeless and censored from the knowledge that is
given to us through books. It is hard to imagine what we would know without books, if anything at all.
The past would become the present and the future would have no meaning. Fahrenheit 451 displays a
deep and thought provoking message to those that read it by showing us what it would be like to live
in a society where we are forced to believe one thing, and are never able to form our own opinions.
Proving that happiness doesn t come from peace among the people, but rather the ability to to be able
to live our life the way that makes you happy. Fahrenheit 451 contains many valuable themes and
lessons that apply to our lives today and also remind us of some of the realities we are faced with.
Fahrenheit 451 is about a society that is consumed in censorship and the affects that come from

How Did Bob Marley Affect Jamaica
Millions and millions of people in the world are familiar with the name Bob Marley. People all over
the world love his songs, such as Buffalo Soldier and Three Little Birds . Is This Love is the ultimate
song to sit back and relax to. Many people, however, don t recognize the political impact that Bob
Marley had to Jamaica. Jamaica, in the 1970 s, was a political and economic mess. Bob Marley s
music, and other Reggae musicians, have conveyed messages of independence all over the world, and
inspired the people of Jamaica to change their country. Although some scholars have argued that the
turnaround of Jamaica s economy and politics can be attributed to X and Y, Reggae music was the
main factor because of the nationalism that it inspired. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reggae brought racial and social awareness.
By bringing tourism and inspiring modernization, Reggae enabled Jamaica to go through urbanization.
Reggae brought money to Jamaica and caused it to become more modern. [XXX SOURCE XXX]
stated that Jamaica was in the process of becoming urban and modern, and the young people who
found themselves in the capital of Kingston were no longer interested in the country music of their
past . The old traditional music of Jamaica had gone away, and Reggae took over. Jamaica was
become more and more modern because people started opening up clubs, which people payed a lot of
money to go to because they played new Reggae music. Because of the tourists that visited Jamaica,
Jamaica got a lot of money which made it become more modern and urbanized. With all these new
clubs opening up, a lot of tourists from around the world wanted to experience the night life of
Jamaica and dance to the fun rythms of Reggae. [XX Source XX] stated that, personal and economic
freedom can strengthen local culture rather than debase it, creating music so unique and infectious that
imitators will spring up on the other side of the globe. Music brought money which brought

Compare And Contrast Othello Play And Movie
Shakespeare was somewhat difficult for me and was probably for most high school students. Many
high school students will study some form of Shakespeare, play or sonnet in high school English. A lot
of students don t know anything about him, so it wouldn t hurt to teach them about Shakespeare.
Adaptations are m because they can take something original and make changes so that can be better
understand. In this essay, I will compare and contrast characters and settings from the graphic novel
and the movie O , to help decide which adaptation is better for high school students.
In the graphic novel, Othello is somewhat similar to O know as Odin who basically is Othello in the
movie. The novel, Othello is the general, a leader to Venice. He has ... Show more content on

This makes him jealous because the garden is a romantic place.
Another critical similarity in setting in both adaptations is Desdemona s/Desi s bedroom. Both
adaptations use Desdemona s bedroom as the place where Othello takes Desdemona s/Desi s life
because he was angry and jealous believing Iago s lies that she cheated on him. Iago/ Hugo also kills
his wife/girlfriend, Emilia/Emily in the same bedroom because she started telling Othello/O the truth
about Iago s/Hugo s dishonesty. Desdemona s bedroom is an important place because it shows the
love they have for each other. The bedroom is supposed to be a place where they show an intimacy
and feel comfortable, but both couples turn it into a place of death, sadness, and regret. At the same
time, the setting was very different from both the movie and novel. In the graphic novel, it took place
in Venice then moved to Cyprus. In the movie, their school was like Venice but then moved to the
basketball court that was supposed to be Cyprus for war . Also, in the graphic novel mostly the entire
story took place at the palace where Othello lived. It changed from time to time but the story was
mostly in the palace. In the movie, the setting changed all the time. First, it was at the basketball court,
then at school, later at someone was house, or the team s locker

Philosopher Karl Popper And Empirical Falsification
Philosopher Karl Popper is widely known for his rejection of classical inductivism, the idea that
scientific knowledge is derived only from observation, and also his support of empirical falsification,
the idea that scientific theories cannot be proven correct, but they can be proven false. In other words,
empirical falsification means that theories can and should be closely and thoroughly examined by
decisive experiments. In Popper s view, a claim must be falsifiable, or testable, in order for it to be
scientifically true; if a hypothesis cannot be refuted, then it is not a scientific claim. Untestable ideas
and theories within science are dubbed pseudo science by Popper, because they have no falsification.

Alternatively, the proclamation the Earth is flat is scientific because it can be proven to be false
through scientific investigation. Popper came up with the term Critical Rationalist , an expression to
describe his ideology. Critical rationalists believe that hypothesis and theories should be criticized in a
rational way and should be tested in a way that they can be proven to be false.
Popper was inspired to come up with his idea of falsification because of the many advances happening
in the Western scientific world while he was growing up in the early 1900 s. Growing up in this time,
Popper was intrigued by the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and even attended lectures of
Albert Einstein about the rules of the universe. He noticed that these distinguished thinkers used
different methods within their work. Freud could make almost any piece of data work in favor of his
theory. To illustrate, he could explain someone s intimacy issues both in terms of not being hugged
enough as a child or in terms of being hugged too much. Evidence to support his claims were all
around. Contrary to Freud, Popper noticed that Einstein was making a different kind of prediction.
Instead of looking in the past to predict the present like Freud, he was looking ahead to predict things
in the future. Popper saw Einstein s method to be extremely risky because if the

Summary Of The Superfluous Woman By Vera Brittain
At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home.
However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The
war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men
that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It
gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain
was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was
responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried.
The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous
Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more
than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war. Vera Brittain (1893 1970), born in Newcastle
under Lyme, was the daughter of middle class parents, Arthur Brittain and Edith Bervon. Her only
brother, Edward, and Roland Leighton, friend of Edward, joined the British Army at the start of World
War I. Vera wanted to get involved in the war efforts. She served as a nurse and joined the Voluntary
Aid Detachment. Vera became engaged to Ronald in August of 1915. Unfortunately, four months after
she accepted his proposal, Ronald passed away in the trenches. Moreover, her brother died only a few

Diphtheria Research Paper
Diphtheria is a highly contagious disease that causes inflammation in airway passages. Diphtheria also
has a connection with the infection pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Diphtheria dates back to
the early 1700 s, and was known for being a plague among children. Not until 1826, was diphtheria
given it s name. In 1885, the idea for intubation was finally brought up by a physician by the name of
Joseph O Dwyer. Many years later, a man by the name of Emil von Behring, stated that a mixture of
both the diphtheria toxin and antitoxin produced an immunization. In 2009, it was declared that since
2004, there had not been one single case of diphtheria in the United States. The disease has almost

Racism In Football Essay
My favorite sport is soccer that is also known as football in Europe and most of the parts of the world.
It is hugely popular game in the world and this is why it is the most played game of the world and
almost all the countries of the Europe have their own football leagues and the Barclays premier league
of England is the most widely watched league of all, even in the countries that don t have a proper
football setup and team like India and Pakistan. Other countries of different continents also have their
own leagues but that are not very much popular around the world. This game has everything for
people of all the age groups and that is why it is widely played, followed and liked all around the
world.
Football is one of the most ancient game of the world and there are proofs that this game was played
in one form or another in many old civilizations and this can be seen the portraits and paintings of
these old civilizations in which people were seen playing football and this is probably the biggest
reason due to which the game is very popular around the world and is played all around the world and
it has been transferred to each other through generations.
Problem:
There are some problems that can be associated with this game and the biggest one of them is racism.
Even after all these years and fight against racism the plague of racism has not been completely
removed from the game of the football and events of racism can be seen after every few days. Few of

Effective Internal Medicine Experience Essay
Transitioning into the third year of medical school was invigorating as I was challenged to assume the
clinical responsibilities of a physician. With every rotation my fundamental base of medical
knowledge evolved, yet I was constantly craving more interactions with patients. I entered medical
school wanting not only to solve medical problems but also to serve as a confidant to those in need.
My internal medicine experience enabled me to satisfy this desire immediately.
Effective internal medicine is built on the physician accurately and attentively taking the patient s
history. Every morning I looked forward to hearing each patient s personal story and identifying his or
her needs, with the ultimate goal of providing appropriate and holistic care. Each patient narrative
helped me understand that what patients need might not just be clinical guidance, but also a sounding
board for personal and socioeconomic troubles that brought them to the hospital in the first place. My
upbringing in an immigrant family and involvement in my own and other cultural groups have helped
prepare me to work and connect with patients from diverse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

information from patients lives. I relish piecing together the personal and medical histories of patients,
paying special attention to the unusual facts of their travels, hobbies, animal interactions, and food

Analytical Comparison

Charles Perrault and the text Little Red Cap by Grimm Brothers have two different viewpoints that

Perrault and the Grimm Brothers agree on the warnings of entering adolescence but describe the loss
of innocence and obedience in different ways. They are similar in a way but they are also different in a
way. In the text Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault he is showing his concern about young
girls/women not being obedient as well as cautious. He is basically warning young girls/women about
the weirdoes in the world and how they come in all different shapes and sizes so they should not be

Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima By Joe Rosenthal
Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a historic photograph by Joe Rosenthal taken on February 23, 1945.
The photograph depicts six men, five United States Marines and one United States Navy corpsman,
raising the United States flag on Mount Suribachi, during the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
Raising the flag on Iwo Jima was the second flag raising of the day, the first being raised early in the
morning after the area was secure. Joe Rosenthal s photo was printed thousands of times, won the
Pulitzer Prize for Photography, and has been made into stamps and statutes. Rosenthal uses color,
lines, and structure to convey the message that the United States won the war. Rosenthal utilizes the
black and white color of the photo to help convey his message of sadness. During World War II, over
6,000 marines were killed in battle, so the dark grey and black help project the message that it was a
time of and sadness. The picture is statuesque in that it looks like someone built a statue on the top of
Mount Suribachi and the black and white color adds to that affect. The black and white color heavily
emphasizes the shadows in the picture and it gives the picture depth. ... Show more content on

forms horizontal lines in the background, adding to a grimmer and more mourning look. Although the
picture was taken after a hard fought battle, the picture still looks sad and supports that the battle was

Similarities Between Inherit The Wind And Robert E. Lee
Henry Norris Russel once said Conflict between science and religion a dangerous foe . Throughout
history, people have argued about the origin of mankind and tried to explain the unexplainable through
religion. These different views have caused segregation and disputes over what s right and wrong.
Intolerance towards outcasts, and consequences of extreme fundamentalism are demonstrated in
Inherit the Wind written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. The central focus of the play is the
trial of Bertram Cates, which debates the education of evolution. It reveals the importance of free
thought and the necessity for respect for views that differ from one s own. However, where there has
been a disagreement about views, conflict has sparked. It is not possible for two different views of
humankind s roots to exist side by side because non conformity can provoke conflict.

conflict between her and father since she defended and was romantically involved with someone who

asserted We call down the same curse on those who ask grace for this sinner (66). His relentless tone
highlights how seriously he takes his beliefs, even if it means going against family. The effects of this
amplified because her father was the Reverend who preached a faith on the fear of God and
punishment of sinners. His use of faith as an excuse for his wrongful actions, and his excessive
fundamentalism amounts to him losing his own daughter, as demonstrated by the proverb He that
troubleth his own house...shall inherit the wind (67). To conclude, Rachel s non conformity with the
loathing views of the Hillsboro citizens for Cates, induce conflicts between her and her

Wage Gap Among Immigrants
The pooled OLS regression estimates by six different specifications are reported in Table 2. Under the
unconditional immigrant wage differential (only immigrant dummy variable is included), immigrants
earn 10 percent less than the Canadian natives. After adding the characteristics about gender,
immigration years, work experience, education, language skill, family factors, industry, occupation
and provinces in column (2), I find that the wage differential widens to 50.8 percent lead to an
increase of 40.8 percent when controlling other characteristics. These considerable changes arise
mainly from the inclusion of variables that affect the wage gap between immigrants and natives. For
example, immigrants accumulating more years since migration and more work experience, the wage
gap will decrease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These effects are not considered in the unconditional wage regression model (the first column) so a
lower wage gap is observed. Thus, if theses variables are controlled, the wage differential will widen
significantly. I find one additional immigration year will increase the weekly immigrant wage by 2.7
log percentage points at the beginning. Moreover, in the higher immigration years, wage starts to
increase at a decreasing rate due to the factor that immigrant workers are too old to work less
efficiently than before. The similar situation can also be found in the work experience variable. All
positive coefficients of provinces imply that workers who reside in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec,
Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia have wage advantages than workers residing in Atlantic
provinces. Compared with that of the Atlantic provinces, the provincial wage difference is largest in
Alberta at 24.67%, followed by Ontario at 21.95%, and British Columbia at 15.02%. This
phenomenon reflects that people in large immigrant provinces have significant wage advantages
relative to people in other

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide Treatments
Lysergic Acid Diethylamide Treatments Lysergic Acid Diethylamide also known as LSD or Acid is a
hallucinogenic/psychedelic drug that has mind altering effects on the human body. This paper focuses
on the attempted therapeutic, medicinal, recreational, etc. applications of LSD with the goal of curing
or helping to mitigate some other undesired effect. Use of LSD is not without its own risks so a
portion of this paper will also focus on potential problems with short/long term LSD treatment
applications. This paper is by no means cumulative or holistic in its approach to this subject and seeks
only to inform the reader on an aspect of legal applications of otherwise illegal drugs. As previously
mentioned LSD is a hallucinogenic or psychedelic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the most part LSD treatment plans ceased in the 1970s this was mainly due to the fact that
unregulated experiments involving highly hallucinogenic drugs on sometimes unwilling participants
became frowned upon and rightly so. LSD can be dangerous depending on the dosage and back in the
50s and 60s researchers would just keep upping the dosages until they felt they got the desired results.
You can see how that could get morally and ethically confusing. The first example this paper covers is
a study published in 1957 involving the use of LSD on psychoneurotic patients under day hospital
conditions; the overall goal being to make these psychoneurotic people more manageable on a day to
day basis. According to the author of the study, Dr. Joyce Martin, the patients selected for treatment
had to meet certain criteria such as: no prior psychotic episodes, a good personality and high
intelligence. (Martin, 1957). It is unclear if the patients in this study knew what was going to happen
to them and it is also unclear if these patients participated willingly. This was of course a time where
strict ethics board did not exist and patient consent/knowledge was not always required to conduct
scientific experiments. Regardless, the experiments themselves were simple: patient arrives at the
hospital, eats breakfast, is put into their own room, an initial dosage of 25 to 50 gamma of LSD was
administered, dosage is increased until desired effect is achieved, patients are monitored and offered
lunch which they often refused due to nausea and then the reaction was terminated by administering
Largactil. Results varied from the patients becoming more receptive to less receptive. Patients were
often reported to experience vivid past memories as well as saying they saw themselves as being
younger when looking at a

  • 2. Themes Of Sandra Cisneros Readers of Sandra Cisneros are able to identify major themes throughout her work. She makes these themes evident because growing up she experienced some of the feelings and emotions that her characters do, which is why she is able to write with such passion. Displacement and isolation are two themes that Cisneros makes evident in her work. Readers will see these themes in Woman Hollering Creek, Mericans, and Eleven. In Woman Hollering Creek isolation and displacement play a big part in the main character, Cleofilas , life. She marries a man whom she believes she is going to be with forever, however that is not the case when her husband decides to do things to her no husband should ever do. Cleofilas tries to pretend that everything that happens to her is normal by faking everything she does and feels. At the ice house where many people come to have a beer Cleofilas goes to accompany her husband because if she does not she will be seen as a bad wife. [...] she is invited and accompanies her husband, sits mute beside their conversation, waits and sips a beer until it grows warm, twists a napkin into a knot, then another into a fan, one into a rose, nods her head, smiles, yawns, politely grins, laughs at the appropriate moments [...] (Cisneros 223). She feels so out of place that instead of trying to make conversation she would rather stay off to the side and pretend like everything is fine. Cleofilas first longs to experience the American Dream, if there is such a thing, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Litigants does not meet constitutional limitation of third party standing unless they sustain or will sustain injury that is actual and imminent. Steel Co. v. His book Children of Dust is a memoir of his life in Pakistan and America. This book also reads more like a story as opposed to a book that just states facts. This book Children Of Dust is broken down into five parts. Each one of these parts signify a different name he takes for himself. Meaning, each of these names or parts identify a certain stage in his life, that he comes to terms with something. Such as Pakistan, Islam, and America and how he belongs to each. The first part of this book is called The Promised Abir ul Islam. This means the Perfume of Islam, and is about Ali as a child in Pakistan, who learns of his destiny and attends a maraca (Eteraz, 1). Before Ali was born, his father enters a mannat, or a Covenant with God. He said that if God were to give him a son, then he would promise that the family will become a great leader and a servant of Islam. After Ali was born, his mother went to Hajj and brought Ali with her. She then rubbed the baby s chest on the wall of the Ka ba in Mecca. This was a way for him to be blessed by God, or Allah. He grew up in a small Pakistan village and has fond memories of his family. However, he did grow up in a strict Muslim household. • 11. Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Summary Chapter 12 During the fourth chapter of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the journey towards the Green Chapel commences. Sir Gawain is escorted by a member of the Red Manor, who gives the knight a heed of warning. The escort offers advice to not travel to the Green Chapel, and if he chose this path, the escort would not tell of his fleeing. Sir Gawain thanks the escort for his warning but tells him that he has to keep his word, otherwise he would become a coward. The chapel was almost missed, if it not for Sir Gawain noticing a rounded hillock on the bank of a stream, near the bed of a torrent that tumbled there (Sir Gawain 2172 73). Sir Gawain entered the mound, which was the entrance to the chapel. Here, he met up with the Green Knight. This is where he reached the end of his quest and was destined to receive his blow to the neck. Sir Gawain moved away from the first attempt, which caused the Knight to suspect that he was not the true knight of the quest. After a dialogue was exchanged between the two, the Green Knight struck a blow to Sir Gawain, which only nicked his neck. The Green Knight told him that his wife was Morgan, whom Gawain spent time with in the Manor, and she was sent to test Gawain. The Green Knight called Sir Gawain one of the most perfect men who ever walked on the earth (Sir Gawain 2363). • 12. What Is Luck Is A Matter Of Preparation Meeting Opportunity Oprah Winfrey once said, Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity. What Oprah means by this statement is that hard work and effort are the key to meeting opportunity. When someone succeeds and another fails, it is not because of how lucky either of them were, but how much of an effort each of them had made. I agree with Oprah Winfrey because hard work and effort are more important. First, opportunity is rare to come by making it better to have the experience of taking. Experience gives people an advantage over the other, the more of it one has, the better their chances. For example, Oprah Winfrey went through countless interviews while working for small television companies and every time she failed she only gained the experience in doing better next time. Now look at her, she is one of the riches women in the world living the dream life. Gaining experience allows us to expand our perception of what we see. The bigger our viewpoint is the more ideas we develop and the greater an asset we become, increasing the chances of being successful. Second, preparation, it can only be beneficial and advantageous. Preparation increases the chances of being successful. Furthermore there is no harm in being prepared. For example, studying for a test will increase the odds of gaining a ... • 15. Should School Uniforms Be Mandatory In Primary And... I believe school uniforms should be mandatory in primary and secondary schools because it relieves discrimination and students. School is a place to learn, not to exhibit fashion, wealth or privilege. Unfortunately, now kids spend so much time being stressed about popularity that they hardly have the energy to learn anything valuable. Parents as well can benefit because buying uniforms is much cheaper and less stressful than spending large amounts of money and time purchasing varied clothes, usually for more than one child at a time. It is cheaper to wear school uniforms because you only have to buy one or two sets of clothes for the entire year, whereas most people buy up to 20 outfits in a uniform free school. School uniforms take the pressure off students to pay top dollar for clothes, according to Reginald Wilson, a senior scholar at the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. I think it does lower the cost of clothes, and kids don t emphasize clothes as much when they re all wearing the same thing, Wilson said. Certainly the competition to wear the best shoes or the best sweaters and so forth has been prevalent in school ever since I was in school, and the poor kids felt inferior. Therefore, when all students are dressed alike, competition between students over clothing choices and the teasing of those who are dressed in less expensive or less fashionable outfits can be eliminated. It also really helps to get up in the morning and not have to think about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. New England Colonies Dbq Alex Pang Mr. Eliason AP United States History 7 September 2015 Behind its neighbors, England finally decided to invest in settling in the New World during the 17th century. Many of the expeditions to North America were made by private organizations; stock companies and the rich alike shared a common ideal of having a fresh start from outside their homeland. Two colonies with one common nationality, however, became two diverse establishments in North America. The colonies in New England and the Chesapeake region developed into two substantially contrasting ways of life. The main colony in the New England region was Massachusetts, which included the Puritans, a group of religious settlers who wanted to purify the Protestant Church of England. ... Most people who voyaged from their motherland were families and their servants (Doc B). Lists of those who emigrated contain upwards of forty families. Also, in the Articles of Agreement of Springfield, Massachusetts everyone shared the planting ground (Doc D). Since the community shared most of the farmland, greed would not be an issue when deciding who would get what plot of land. Further, Puritans believed we must entertain each other [with care, and] must be willing to [bridge ourselves] . . . [to supply for] others necessities (Doc A). The community theme the Massachusetts people embody is further seen in family relying upon family. Differing from the New England list of emigrants, most Virginia bound colonists were men who failed to bring their families or men who did not have families (Doc C). Many of the men aboard were jewelers, goldsmiths, and other tradesmen who believed they were going to become wealthy at their new colony. Captain John Smith recounts [many of the worst among us were gold seekers] with their golden promises [and] made all men their slaves (Doc F). • 18. Essay Fallacies in the Movie High Noon HIGH NOON FALLACIES High Noon, a western film mostly respected by conservative viewers, and endlessly ranked over by critics. This was an exciting movie considering it was a black and white film. The whole movie was about the loyalty of a town marshal named Kane and the betrayal of the town. After watching High Noon, there were a lot of fallacies that were depicted through out the movie such as begging the question, ad hominem, slippery slope, and Inconsistency. The characters in the movie do a great job at portraying each of these fallacies. At the beginning of the movie, as Kane and Amy are riding away for their honeymoon, Kane stops the prairie and claims that he has to go back and states this is crazy . When Amy questions Kane ... Following the scene, when Kane asks for volunteer deputies, one of the Individual s gets up and says, Ain t it true, that Kane no longer a marshal and isn t it true there is personal trouble between him and Miller? This is another great example of Ad Hominem because once again another individual is attacking Kane s character rather than tackling the issue that Kane is making in the scene. The Individual s argument is rejected on the basis of irrelevant fact about Kane. In a key scene, where characters in the church debate the pros and cons of helping the marshal, the case is finally made against Kane by the Mayor with the economic rationalist argument that a gunfight in the streets would be bad for business and the North wont send money for stores and factories. I believe this scene is a good example of a slippery slope fallacy because the mayor is using fear of gunfire in streets to support his idea of North not sending money for stores and factories. The Mayor is not using a good argument/ reason to support his idea. There is no evidence provided that north won t send money because of gunfire between Kane and Miller. Towards the end of the film, inconsistency in characters seems to develop. In the scene, where herb shows up at the jail house ready to fight along side Kane changes his mind after he finds out that it will be just him and Kane fighting against Miller and his posse. Power Leads to Corruption Power makes individuals corrupt Corruption is when people in positions of entrusted power abuse their power for their own personal gains [or to fulfill the agendas of the group they represent] (Transparency International). Lord Acton, a nineteenth century historian, argued that power is the root cause of corruption. The more power one has, the more corrupt one is likely to become ( Biography of Lord Acton. ). Although some commentators argue that there is no correlation between power and corruption, however Lord Acton was right because power makes individuals egocentric, makes the powerful less sympathetic towards those who are inferior, and makes a person hypocrite. They instead increased their own budgets as compared to the last budget and all of this was at the cost of low subsidies on essential food items, electricity and other the necessities of life (Ali, Kalbe. Hence a logical conclusion that follows is that powerful individuals use their power for their personal gains and are not concerned about the effect of their doings on the society. Another major reason because of which power tends to corrupt is that people with absolute power usually become less sympathetic towards those with no or less power and do not consider the perspective of other individuals. Adam Galinsky, a psychologist at Northwestern University conducted a series of experiments to find whether powerful individual give importance to others or not. As part of the experiment, Galinsky asked the participants to write letter E on their forehead. The results of the experiment showed that participant who were primed with the feeling of power wrote E backward, when seen by another person (Lehrer, Jonah. How Power Corrupts. ). Nowadays, it is all about violence and robberies. To some people, the world is seen as a bad place to be because of all the negative minded people and the impact they leave on others. Fortunately, not all people are negative minded; the world has good people who do positive things to impact the world. In fact, Charles Darwin is a prime example of a good person who made a positive impact on the world. Darwin signed to become a naturalist, came up with the theory of evolution, and he also wrote a book, Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection explaining his life s work. It is important that people know and understand the importance of Darwin and the theory of Evolution and Natural Selection. Darwin was an English naturalist. According to an article, Darwin established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin s theory of Evolution and Natural Selection shows how humans developed from one stage to the next. He beginned his experiment by placing an ad in the newspaper calling out for males that were willing to be part of the experiment, 70 individuals answered the ad. Every individual had to go through a background check to check for mental issues or past drug or alcohol use. In the end only 24 students were chosen (McLeod). The prisoners were treated just like they would be treated at a your average prison. Half of the 24 students that were selected were prisoners and the other half were the guards. The guards had no specific direction as to how to treat the prisoners, Guards were instructed to do whatever they thought was necessary to maintain law and order in the prison and to command the respect of the prisoners. No physical violence was permitted Mcleod 11). As the days went on the prison began to seem and become more like a real life one was. The guards began to become more aggressive in order to maintain control over the inmates. Some of the prisoners began to show early signs of depression by the third day. Answer: The United States began expanding westward during the 1800s. During the early 1800s, America turned its attention towards the exploration and settlement of its Western territory. The amount of land had been greatly increased by the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which almost doubled the size of the nation. Later on, the size of the United States increased yet again with the Mexican Cession and the Gadsden Purchase. From these, the United States gained California, Nevada, Utah, Texas, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Settlers swept westward, encouraged by the federal government. The government created the Homestead Act, which offered 160 acres of cheap land in the West under the condition that the settlers had to work the land for 5 years. As the Western territories became more and more developed, Native Americans and their culture were slowly destroyed through laws such as the Indian Removal Act and the Dawes Act. Native Americans were forced onto small reservations and their children were then forcibly assimilated into white American culture in order to make room for the white settlers. PURPOSE 2 Question: Why did nations desire to expand and gain power through imperialism? Answer: There were many philosophies about the way that America should interact with other countries. Without books we would lack the knowledge of those in the past, and the ability to see the world from a different perspective. Each book contains information different from the last, but each book is written with a purpose. Each book is written for a reason, and what we are able to obtain from the books that we have been given reflect the person that we are. Without books we would be lost as people, as members within the community, and as a society as a whole we would be searching for something that we can not find. In Popper s view, a claim must be falsifiable, or testable, in order for it to be scientifically true; if a hypothesis cannot be refuted, then it is not a scientific claim. Popper was inspired to come up with his idea of falsification because of the many advances happening in the Western scientific world while he was growing up in the early 1900 s. Growing up in this time, Popper was intrigued by the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and even attended lectures of Albert Einstein about the rules of the universe. He noticed that these distinguished thinkers used different methods within their work. Freud could make almost any piece of data work in favor of his theory. • 27. Summary Of The Superfluous Woman By Vera Brittain At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home. However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried. The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war.
