Persuasive Essay On The San Diego Zoo
If your child s birthday is quickly approaching, you might be wondering how to celebrate. A party at
home, whether just as a family or with the kid s friends, can be fun, but sometimes it is fun to do
something beyond just cake and ice cream at home. If you are looking for something other than a
party at home or even just pizza at your kid s favorite pizza parlor, consider these three birthday party
options in San Diego.
San Diego Zoo
For kids who enjoy animals, the San Diego Zoo is a fun birthday celebration option. Their Australian
Outback birthday bash includes admission to the zoo, lunch, and birthday cake. The kids will also get
the opportunity to interact with some of the zoo animals and be entertained by some of the zoo s staff
members. Unfortunately for older children, the Australian Outback Birthday Bash was only created for
children up to 10 years old.
It does not have to be your child s birthday to go to the zoo, though. The San Diego Zoo was ranked
by Trip Advisor as the #1 Zoo in the World in 2015, and it consistently ranks as one of the Top Ten
zoos in the world. Whether you are bringing along a large group of kids for your child s birthday
celebration or you are simply going as a family, you can expect to see some of your favorite animals,
including giant pandas, a Komodo dragon, and flamingos. You can even see unique animals, such as
the okapi, which looks a bit like a mix of a zebra and a giraffe.

Essay on Public Relations
Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it, nothing can
succeed.
Abraham Lincoln
Fundamentally, public relation is relations with publics. (Public Relations Writing, 2000, p.10) The
publics can be any group of people that shares a common interest.
Through communication in different ways organizations want to establish, develop and maintain a
positive relationship with different groups.
This is just a basic definition of public relation but in fact it is much more challenging to really define
and practice public relations.
Due to the world s rapid change through advanced technology public relation became more and more
a global activity. Nowadays it is one of the fastest growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Anyways, through different definitions this essay gives you an overview and a better understanding of
what public relations is and does. It shows you the importance and function of public relations in an
organization especially in today s world.
Public relations is the management of communication between an organization and its publics.
(Grunig Hunt s, 1984)
First of all it is important to recognize that pubic relation is a management function.
The success of a company depends on relationships with the public such as consumers, suppliers,
investors, employees, government and media. Since public relation practitioners are the once who do
the actual communication between their organization and its public it is obvious that public relation is
a management function.
Public Relations is the management function that establishes and maintains mutually beneficial
relationships between an organization and the publics on whom its success or failure depends.
(Effective Public Relations, 2005, p.1)
Public relation is a management function that helps achieve organizational objectives, define
philosophy, and facilitate organizational change. Public relations practitioners communicate with all
relevant internal and external publics to develop positive relationships and to create consistency
between organizational goals and societal expectations.
The organization s philosophy for example is established through the

The Marine Corps And The Corps
In recent history, the Marine Corps offered only limited options to the combatant commander to
respond to crises. This response capability was usually resident within the Marine Expeditionary Unit
in the form of noncombatant evacuation operations, foreign humanitarian assistance, and embassy
reinforcement. However, as the global climate has shifted from a Cold War, or even OIF I, paradigm
to one of small conflicts or crises of short duration. Within this context the Marine Corps continues to
seek to match its unique capability sets to the dynamic challenges of the 21st century, developing
concepts such as Expeditionary Force 21, which seeks to provide options for contingencies through
globally dispersed assets and capabilities. The Marine Corps ability to execute in such an environment
hinges on the MAGTF s center of gravity, the Aviation Combat Element (ACE), and specifically its
game changer , the MV 22 Osprey. The unique capabilities of this aircraft, especially when coupled
with the refueling capability of the C 130, truly provide a unique and efficient method to flow forces
over distances inconceivable merely a generation ago. In this instance, the aircraft is the innovation:
determining to apply a unique capability in regions of instability is simply logical. However, the
semantics of what qualifies innovation is inconsequential. Marines, deployed as a self contained
package, with all of their associated things, can rapidly respond to crisis, bridge gaps between

Summary Of Chapter 7 Of The Great Gatsby
Chapter seven starts off with Nick discovering that Gatsby ended his parties because he no longer
needed them to attract Daisy and he fires all his servants, replacing them with Wolfsheim s men. On
the hottest day of the summer, Daisy invites Nick and Gatsby to her house to have lunch with her, Tom
and Jordan. The lunch is awkward as a result of the intense heat, and Daisy questions what they
should all do with the rest of their day and she says that she wants to go into the city. Daisy and
Gatsby lock eyes and Tom can sense by looking into her eyes, that they love each other and then
agrees to head to the city. Before they leave for the city, Gatsby tells Nick that Daisy s voice is full of
money . As Tom drives Nick and Jordan in Gatsby s yellow car, Daisy and Gatsby ride alone in Tom s

Richard Benjamin Speck Personality Traits
Richard Benjamin Speck was born in Kirkwood, Illinois December of 1941. In 1966 Speck seized the
hearts of many after slaughtering eight female nursing students who live in Chicago. Speck had a
tattoo on his arm and it said BORN TO RAISE HELL . He has had a history of violence against
woman, because of his hatred for his mother. After his killing spree in 1966, there was said to be a
manhunt that lead to his arrest two days later. Speck went to prison and died at the age of 49 years old
by way of a heart attack (Edward, 2007). Serial killers have been identified by Hickey Simon, 2002, as
a Caucasian male between the ages of 20 and 39 years old. There personalities exhibit psychopathic
behaviors, pleasure seeking outlook on life as well as lack of morality when they do something that is
violent (Hickey Simons, 2002). The upbringing of serial killers is steady with these characteristics.

only 6 years old, this prompts him to rebel and become emotionally disconnected from any and every

The Scientific Revolution Essay
During the Scientific Revolution scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, Descartes and Bacon wrestled
with questions about God, human aptitude, and the possibilities of understanding the world.
Eventually, the implications of the new scientific findings began to affect the way people thought and
behaved throughout Europe. Society began to question the authority of traditional knowledge about
the universe. This in turn, allowed them to question traditional views of the state and social order. No
longer was the world constructed as the somewhat simple Ptolemaic Model suggested. The Earth for
the first time became explicable and was no longer the center of the universe. Many beliefs that had
been held for hundreds of years now proved to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The statement acts to justify his finding with the church and connect them to God. Copernicus realized
that the church would be quick to judge him, and possibly this is why he didn t publish his theories
until late in his life. His discoveries were not so much as important as were his methods of observation
and application of mathematics to explain the world. His methods of discovery helped model the
direction of science over the next hundred years.
Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born
professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as a
professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the accuracy
of the Churches representation of the world. Galileo s approach towards knowledge was much
different then the afore mentioned Copernicus. Where as Copernicus presented his finding to the
mercy of the church, Galileo wrote his conclusions and left the Roman Catholic Church interpret them
as they chose. The very nature of his findings pitted him as an opponent of the church.
The Earth was not the center of the universe. Galileo had seen far into the heavens with the telescope
he had designed and created an even more accurate mold of the universe. He trumpeted his views
everywhere, and condemned anyone who

Art Museum When I went to the museum there were beautiful and amazing art that I really enjoy. My
first impression when I walked in was wow and how they made all this. I also thought who came up
with these design. There were many crazy and funny looking designs I really liked. I enjoyed the one
with a big rock in the middle and sand around it. It was really simple but had so much meaning to it. I
was pleased on how the staffs showed us around and treated us. They were interested on how we liked
and didn t like the art there. There were so much fancy art there but one caught my eyes. Which was
the picture of the flying babies. They told me the flying babies had the power to heal and to do good in
the world. When the battles came they would sent them after all the soldiers needed help. If I had the
power to heal people or myself that s what I would do. I also got to see the very old coins collections.
I got to see a very special thing which was butterflies and moths on the wall. There were probably
about thousand of each butterfly and moths. They were made of metal it was very unique. There was
another special room we got to go in which was called the flashing lights. It was amazing and
gorgeous. It was blacked out and it was like a maze in the dark. For a few seconds some lights would
flash on and off which made it awesome. The top three arts that really interested me were the 3D box,
the man made out legos and the man on the wall. My first art

Why Did Connecticut Get Its Shape Essay
How did Connecticut get its shape.
Connecticut s landscape and surface change from 3 elements named tectonic plates, Glaciation, and
Weathering and erosion.
Tectonic plates
Tectonic plates are the reason why earth s surface area isn t flat. Tectonic plate formed the
Appalachian mountains and Mount Frisell. This happened millions of years ago, and the cause of the
formation is that the tectonic plates collide into each other start to rise upwards. This brings up big
pieces of rock from the crust to form mountains. Tectonic plate didn t just form mountains is
Connecticut they also form valleys. Valleys are formed by the tectonic plates repelling off each other
and creating a big, long valley that could hold water in them. This is one of the steps how the famous
Connecticut river was formed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Millions of years ago, Connecticut was close to the equator and that caused the Wisconsin glacier to
move. When, the Glacier was melting the water was running under the ice and caring rocks with the
flow of the water. This is called plucking and the reason why is because when one rock is picked up
that rock picks up other rocks and the rocks start shooting out like bullets and end up on a beach. This
formed the Hammonasset beach. When the Wisconsin glacier stopped melting/ was all water the
Wisconsin glacier formed Lake Hitchcock. All of the deebree that came down from the flow of the
water was keeping all of the water trapped into a valley. When, the beebree/ dam broke most of the
water went into Lake Connecticut. When all of the water was added to Lake Connecticut the water
levels ross so high that the land got covered by water and then Lake connecticut was connected to the
Atlantic Ocean. There was so much water that all of the water didn t go into the Atlantic Ocean. Some
of the water stayed in the valley that Lake hitchcock was. This is how the Connecticut river and Long

The Downfall Of The Subprime Mortgage Market
The Downfall of the Subprime Mortgage Market During the housing boom, the subprime mortgage
market enhanced the revenues of lenders, investment bankers and investors alike. While some knew
the trend would come to an end many did not. When the housing bubble burst and home prices
declined the effect on those involved was enormous, financial institutions who originally had low debt
to equity ratios, soon found themselves on the cusp of bankruptcy.
Housing Bubble Due to the U.S. Governments relaxed lending stipulations and low interest rates, the
demand for houses soared from 1996 to 2006, consequently increasing home prices across the country.
During this time period home prices rose nearly fifty percent (Li, 2015). Comparatively, from ... Show

Moreover, the foreclosure rate varied from only 1.58% on prime loans to an outstanding 12.55% on
subprime mortgage loans (Subprime Mortgage, 2016). Due to the collapse in the housing market,
foreclosures caused an estimated $71 billion in losses at the end of 2007, as well as, another $32
billion is losses to properties neighboring the foreclosures (Li Li, 2012). Consequently, investors
began to see the risk associated with mortgage backed securities and began purchasing safer
investment. The housing bubble burst had a profound effect on financial institutions involved in the
securitization of subprime mortgages and as such was the tipping point to the financial crisis.
Effect of Lenders, investment banks, and investors Since, those involved in the subprime mortgage
market assumed home prices would continue to rise, many were unable to foresee the fatal
repercussions a crash in the housing market would cause. Once subprime loan delinquencies and
foreclosures increased, some lenders were forced to buy back the bad loans from investment banks
negatively impacting their earnings and stock prices (A Sub Prime Primer, 2007). Furthermore, the
value of mortgage back securities dropped substantially and combined with fewer buyers, investment
banks experienced enormous losses on their security holdings, which they were forced to record. In

Don Delillo Quest For Fulfillments
In Don Delillo s Underworld, the baseball is sought after as the ultimate goal and a fulfillment in life
for Nick and the memorabilia collector. On the other hand, the ubiquitous use of waste throughout the
novel is a motif of both the byproduct and the opportunity cost of mankind s quests for fulfillment.
Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted love, wasted lives, or objects all serve as a contrast to the value
of the baseball as an object of fulfillment. The baseball Bobby Thomson hit is important because it is
both worthless and priceless at the same time. It is worthless when it is removed from the context of a
baseball game; it loses the very purpose that it stands for. Yet, people like Nick and the memorabilia
collector are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The baseball, as one possible objective for fulfillment, symbolizes the desires and goals of mankind. If
the baseball is viewed in such a way (as a symbol of inherent human goals), then Nick and co. are not
redeemed by the baseball. Instead, they are simply very human, driven by their pursuit of the
fulfillment of lifelong objectives. However, where there is a quest for fulfillment, regret inevitably
follows. The regret comes from either the failure in fulfillment or the opportunity cost (the sacrifice)
of such a quest. For example, an investment banker may fail to ever become a managing director; and
he might never become the journalist he was aspiring to be. This regret, ubiquitous throughout the
novel, is represented by the motif of waste. For example, a prostitute whose silicone breasts had
leaked [...] was unemployed now (246) after possibly failing in her desire to profit from prostitution.
Another illustration of waste lies in The Wall, where children waste lives and pass away in the worst
of the projects in New York. Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted lives, or wasted love, springs
when someone fails in reaching a goal and/or from the associated cost in reaching such a goal. The
baseball is juxtaposed with the motif of waste to show the relationship between the quests for human

The Issue Of Premarital Sex
Cohabitation was once considered deviant and unlawful by society, as it was considered to be a
proclamation of premarital sex. (Gault Sherman Draper, 2012). As attitudes toward cohabitation have
become progressively acceptable, it has become increasingly prevalent in today s culture. (Gault
Sherman Draper, 2012). As a result, there has been a decline in the number of couples that are
choosing marriage. Research indicates the likelihood of divorce is increased when a couple lives
together prior to marriage, increasing 166% if the wife had premarital sex and cohabited with another
man before her husband. (Alvare, 2004). There is evidence that despite the rise in numbers of couples
cohabiting, Americans desire more. [T]hey do not merely aspire to parenthood; they do not aspire to a
brief or even life long cohabiting relationship. They aspire to marriage, and the intrinsic permanence
of marriage...Pursuing marital happiness today, then, seems to require a greater unification in law,
policy, and culture of messages about sex and marriage (Alvare, 2004).
Churches and religious organizations often approach the topic of cohabitation from a judgmental
standpoint, and immediately condemn the behavior. Cohabiting couples who reach out to the church
for guidance or seek premarital counseling need healing and restoration, not condemnation.
Consideration needs to be given to the reasons for cohabiting in order to determine the most effective
approach. Marriage Preparation and

Stem Cell Controversy
Stem Cell Controversy
Stem cells were first isolated and cultured in November of 1998 and have been surrounded with much
debate and controversy since day one. Although the ethical debates have been mostly static and have
closely mimicked the ethical debates over abortion, the political determinations concerning federal
funding of stem cell research have gone through numerous evolutions in the years since the first
hESCs were isolated and cultured (Saltzberg 505). Research is currently being conducted on stem
cells, but only with private funds. The federal government has a ban on funding embryonic stem cell

There would be no chance for tissue rejection and no drugs would be needed to correct any problems
regarding rejection. In preliminary tests conducted by Geron, a pharmaceutical company, stem cells
slip by the human immune system unharmed. However, scientists have been unable to find
multipotent stem cells in all tissues in the body. Therefore, the only way to obtain certain cells would
be to use pluripotent stem cells, which are found in embryos and fetal tissue.
This is where much controversy comes into play with stem cells. Much research is needed and this
will only happen if federal funds are used to conduct research on stem cells. In August of 2001,
President Bush made a speech regarding stem cell research. In this speech he said, Based on
preliminary work that has been privately funded, scientists believe further research using stem cells
offers great promise that could help improve the lives of those who suffer from many terrible diseases
(Ruse 10). In the end, Bush said he would allow for federal funds to be used on stem cell research, but
there was a catch.
As a result of private research, more than sixty genetically diverse stem cell lines already exist. They
were created from embryos that have already been destroyed, and they have the ability to regenerate
themselves indefinitely, creating ongoing opportunities for research. I have concluded that we should

An Observation of Development of Danio Rerio
An Observation of Development of Danio rerio Principles of Nervous System Development An
observation of development of Danio rerio Xenopus laevis and Danio rerio are two models that are
extensively used to study early embryonic development, in particular, neurulation. During this
practical Danio rerio was used as the model, however the advantages and disadvantages of the use of
both models will be discussed herein. Both Xenopus and Zebrafish are excellent model organisms in
the study of development. They can both be generated in the lab at relatively low cost and
development of the embryos can be observed within a relatively short time frame. The eggs
themselves are also very easy to observe due to their transparency. Xenopus can be generated through
in vitro fertilisation or natural mating with an optimal temperature of 23°C (Xenbase.org 2014).
Zebrafish similarly can be generated in relatively large sizes, by maintaining them on long day
photoperiods of about 14 hours of light and 10 hours of dark with their development, once fertilized
and incubated between 26 28°C, hatching between 3 4 days (Bradford and Sun 1994). Both Xenopus
and Zebrafish have a known genome and knockdowns of genes etc., can be easily performed and
observed as micro manipulation of both Zebrafish and Xenopus are relatively easy to do as they are
robust embryos. It is also worth mentioning that while both animals are excellent models for
development, genetic studies cannot be done on Xenopus

A Study On The Origin Of The Kikuyu
Location:
While the Kikuyu can be found throughout Kenya, the heaviest concentration being in Central
Province, known as the traditional Kikuyu homeland. They traditionally identify their land as bounded
by these mountains or ranges: Mt. Kenya (which they call Kirinyaga the shining mountain), Ol Donyo
Sapuk, the Ngong Hills and the Aberdare (Nyandarua) Range. Many Kikuyus also live in Uganda and
Tanzania, some having risen to national leadership.
History:
The Kikuyu traditionally believe that a man, Gikuyu, was the founder of the tribe. He had a wife
named Mumbi, who gave birth to nine (plus one) daughters. The daughters married and had their own
families, retaining a domineering role in Kikuyu society.
This has led to the current division of the Kikuyu into nine (plus one) family groupings. According to
legend, the men grew tired of their treatment by the women and rebelled. This legend seems to
represent a change in history from matriarchal to patriarchal organization, which also occurred with
other Bantu peoples.
Ancestors of the Kikuyu arrived in Kenya during the Bantu migrations of 1200 1600 AD. The Kikuyu
developed from several continuous waves of migration and remigration within the area. The Kikuyu
as such actually came to be by around 1800, and include some families from all the surrounding
peoples.
One genetic line contributing to the Kikuyu is the Thagicu, thought to be the earliest Bantu settlers in
the area, perhaps around 1200 AD. The Kamba also

The Social Acceptance Of Alcohol
INTRODUCTION: The social acceptance of alcohol all over the world, whether it be social or
cultural, is the leading cause of why alcohol addiction is so prevalent especially in the United States.
Alcohol is the second leading cause of death in the US and one of the most abused drugs worldwide. It
is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States with nearly 88,000 peaople dying
from it annually (Alcohol Facts and Statistics). There are many facts and statistics that are available
throughout the internet and pamphlets that are passed around in school, however, this does not seem to
scare those away from binge drinking. Drinking too much has many harmful effects on many of your
body s organs and immune system and can increase the risk of many cancers such as liver, breast, and
esophagus cancers. To many people, alcohol is not a serious issue especially because it is used so
commonly but thousands and thousands of people are killed throughout the United States every year
because of this preventable issue. As a public health provider, I believe that alcohol abuse is a
detriment to our society because of how many lives are taken from it. Alcohol addiction can cause
many health problems and personality changes that not only affects one person, but can also affect
their friends and family. The problem that makes alcohol addiction so frustrating is that it is
completely preventable because of the resources that are available to help a person quit.

Student Retention Is A Growing Problem
Many colleges and universities throughout the United States and several other countries face a
common problem. Student retention is a growing problem across the nation for all ethnic groups and
all ages. Each individual who chooses to drop out of school has their own personal reasons as to why
they do. However, many drops out can be completely avoided. When students drop out they are not
clearly thinking about how it s going to affect their future, the future of their children and even
grandchildren. Although there are several reasons as to why students drop out of school, we will be
exploring a few as it relates to why student retention is a growing problem.
Transitioning into higher education presents challenges for all students, whether it s their age or
previous educational history. Numerous individuals are extremely nervous as they are entering into an
advanced environment such as higher education. This because college is a new learning environment
at a completely different level. However, freshmen find college to be difficult at first because it s
harder for them to adjust. That s why many universities should have student centers in place to help
students. Student centers give students the pathway for flexible learning as it results in being
successful in higher education (BauĆŸienė VosyliĆ«tė 2015).

used their research to understand students loyalty. As fast as

Paper On Predestination
1. Predestination has always been, for me, a tricky topic/doctrine. I find it very difficult to reconcile
God s choosing the elect with the implications for those who are non elect. It seems very
contradictory, and contrary to His nature, that an all loving God, who loves unregenerate persons as
much (?) as regenerate persons, would essentially choose, whether actively or passively, individuals to
spend eternity in hell. Admittedly, my own theological grasp of hell is somewhat lacking, as I don t
really understand how allowing people to live in torment for all of eternity can be a loving action on
God s part, although I know that it must somehow be loving. While I despise universalism, I can
understand why Christians might wish to twist their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I find the argument that the repentance required for salvation can be considered a work to be
interesting, but ultimately incorrect. It seems to me that repentance, defined as the abandonment of
sin, inspired by godly sorrow for our sin (Erickson 352), is still enabled, or even given to us, by the
Lord, without whose influence we would not be capable, in our total depravity, of experiencing a truly
godly sorrow over our sin. Also, I disagree with the argument that repentance moves us away from
salvation by faith alone, as repentance is part of faith. True faith cannot be separated from repentance
(352), as they are interwoven together, or two sides of the same coin (Zuck 5). For example, the self
stated purpose of the Gospel of John is so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God, and that by believing you may have life in His name (English Standard Version, John 20:31).
The entire book of John, which is clearly evangelistic and dedicated to bringing people to faith in
Christ (as God), does not speak of repentance at all, indicating its position as an aspect of conversion
alongside faith, rather than as a separate entity in the process of salvation. Indeed, if repentance is
distinct from faith as a requirement to be saved, then the full gospel is not given by John (Ironside 37
38), which is at odds with his evangelistic purpose. Both repentance and faith are acts, yes, but not
works in and of themselves (or if they are, they are primarily done or

The Roots of Our Digital World Essay
The Roots of Our Digital World
Today s world revolves around the storing, organization, and communication of information. While
the world today may seem new and unique, this digital world arose out of a combination of many
smaller steps that varied from innovations like a new discovery in science or a new philosophical
outlook. In their writings Lev Manovich, a professor of New Media at San Diego University, and Dr.
Simon Cook, an Economics professor at Duke University, have developed of a history of what lead to
the development of the visual world. Manovich claims that the digital revolution came in a three step
process. The first took place in the time period between 1870 and 1920. Manovich believes that during
this time period, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Manovich and Cook created a strong structure for a digital history, however, the two failed to make
note of a few critical aspects that compliment and add more depth to this history. Both scholars place
too much emphasis on setting a specific beginning to this history. Manovich and Cook, also, fail to
incorporate the work of Charles Dogson, otherwise known as Lewis Carroll, into the late Victorian
history, and fail to note the importance of technological developments in creation of the modern
digital world.
Finding the actual beginning of the digital history might not be possible and unnecessarily weakens
the narrative. Lev Manovich believes that this history behind the digital world of today began with
developments in the late Victorian time period. Cook refutes this belief and notes that the major
contributors to late Victorian visual reasoning called upon the influence of already existing
mathematics to develop their charts and graphs. The late Victorian time period, however, remains the
initial time period where these influences related to the history of the creation of the digital world of
today (Cook 6 7). While Cook may be correct in making such an argument, Cook s attempt to clarify
Manovich s claim creates more confusion about when the start of this change began.
As the more people study and research the history of the modern

Metoo And Time s Up Analysis
1. The #MeToo and Time s Up social movements organize around the issues of sexual violence,
harassment and abuse, with an emphasis on women in the workplace. For decades, incidents like these
have always occurred, yet they were not spoken about. The main reason being, the harassment is
incited by a person of power and authority in the majority of the cases, and them taking advantage of
these qualities. These issues coincide with themes such as democracy, inequality, social justice, and
decent work, as they violate the foundation of human rights that these themes were built upon. In the
theme of democracy and inequality, 123 out of 192 countries revolve around the idea of a democratic
society to make its citizens feel inclusive and supports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 7th chapter of the book Drawn to change, it draws attention to the Service, Office, and Retail
Workers Union of Canada, in which it was a militant attempt to revitalizing a feminist movement and
changing the gender makeup of the labour force post WWII. It was able to gather locals of female
workers to dedicate their workplace to the success of this organization, however it faced many
obstacles as they promoted unions, and employers drastically opposed union organizing around this
time. Unfortunately, this organization no longer exists but it is a vital part of the past that consists of
feminism and power to women in the workplace. It was only a stepping stone to where we are on
women s issues today. Similarly, to the #MeToo/Time s Up movements, they advocate for the equality
of women in the workplace, as it is prevalent that females still do not make up of much of the
workplace back in the 1970 s and now. In contrast, this organization is deceased under the wrath of the
government. However, the #MeToo/Time s up movement is only growing, and this time with the
tactics this organization has succeeded in, the government will not have the same power they did over
SORWUC. In the 8th chapter, the working class in Ontario within the 1990 s experienced a situation
where employers and politicians intensified their attacks on working people and on the poor. Workers
and the unions that represented them were forced to bear the brunt of a global economic recession.

A community credit union is a financial cooperative operating to lend money to its members. The
constituents of a mutual organization put money into a collective, where it may then be disbursed to
members in need of loans, at agreeable rates and with good terms. By eliminating the need to turn a
profit, mutual organizations are able to give lower rates on loans than traditional banking
organizations. The sub prime lenders are considered, in some instances, as a last resort since they tend
to give loans to people with a very low credit scores or an otherwise extremely high risk of default.
This type of lender offers loans at exorbitant interest rates as a way of covering losses from the high
default rate they experience with their borrowers. Fannie Mae does not hold onto all of the purchased
mortgages. It will take the individual loans and package them up with hundreds of others and market
them as mortgage backed securities (MBS) that it then sells to investors (for example, insurance
companies, pension funds). Fannie Mae provides a guarantee to these investors that they will receive
timely principal and interest payments, no matter what happens with the underlying mortgages. If
there are large numbers of defaults, Fannie Mae will have to make the investors whole, utilizing tax
dollars. Investors can also buy shares

Short stories have been around for many years. D.H. Lawrence has wrote many stories. Two of his
stories are Odour of Chrysanthemums and The rocking horse winner . There are several differences
and similarities between the two stories. The similarities and differences between the two stories are
with the characters, theme and imagery. Overall, the two stories were very similar with differences in
details. The primary theme of both stories is love. In both of his stories, there is an issue with the
mother s lack of love. In addition to love, D.H. Lawrence centered both stories on family dynamics.
The theme is on the interaction and relationship amongst family members. In both stories, the mother
struggled to with love. Though the mother in Odour of Chrysanthemums appeared to have loved and
cared for her children, she felt cold about her unborn child. The mother in The rocking horse winner

Tests, fourth edition (GMRT 4; 2000). Students also completed a questionnaire regarding their study
habits, music rating of the songs chosen for the experiment and if they preferred to study with or
without music. Results indicated that the students scored better on performance and comprehension
without music playing in the background. Those students that indicated they preferred to study with
music and rated they liked the music selection in the experiment, had a significant decrease in
comprehension. This study indicates that a student s music preference may be distracting if played
while studying (Anderson Fuller, 2010). The final two studies tested subjects with various levels of

(1978) argues that this process of Western self presentation acts to construct orientalist as west s alter

The Challenge for Under Armor will be can they stand the pressure from their competitors as they
expand into a bigger market. They must be able to provide their customers with either cheaper or
better products, the companies marginal cost should be better than that of their competitors, and Under
Armour must prove to their customers that their products are different and overall better than their

Pros And Cons Of Homeland Security
The United States border stretches for thousands of miles of harsh desert and forest landscape,
between two oceans, over lakes and rivers and deals with the highest amount of immigrant traffic in
the world. The U.S. has one of the toughest jobs in dealing with border security and the other issues
that arise from economic and political ramifications, to securing the land, sea and air borders from
unwanted entry by illegals immigrants, terrorists and contraband. Due to all these aspects, these make
it difficult for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to get a handle on securing our nations
border. Securing the border from illegal entry falls under the jurisdiction of the Custom Border
protection (CBP) and Border Patrol, which both agencies are under the large DHS umbrella. These
agencies were both created to handle these types of problems and have increased its work force
numbers after the 9/11 attacks. This is actually when the U.S. really started to look at borders and
locking them down from unwanted entry. With the creation of the Department of Homeland Security
in March of 2003, the increase in the amount of federal officers on the border has nearly doubled to
the sum of over 17,000 (DHS.gov, 2017). In this research paper, it will discuss the types of borders the
United States has, what are the threats associated with the border, and what strategies are in place with
Canada and Mexico to combat and prevents these threats from entering the country. What are the

William Oneill s The Hairy Ape
Often times literature is used to reflect historical events of the time period in which the piece is
written. Examining artifacts such as books, plays, or music is a way to gain insight into the social,
political, and cultural attitudes of that time period. An example of a primary source of the 1920s would
be Eugene Oneill s the Hairy Ape. In this play, the main character Yank falls victim to a technological
movement, the Industrial Revolution. New ideas, technologies, and cultures were emerging, and Yank
has to deal with the adversity of post WWI America.
The play begins with a scene that incudes firemen working in the engine room of a ship talking
amongst each other. This scene is depicts the transformation from human labor to machines, ... Show

In Scene 1 he believes he is self confident, powerful and strong, that he has the ability to make a

had just won the first major world war and transformed themselves into an official world superpower,
so the general vibe and attitude throughout the country was a positive one. However, as the play
progresses, Yank slowly realizes how little impact his single soul can make. By the time he is kicked
out of the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) office in Scene 7, he feels as though he is a broken
machine that can no longer do work. Near the end of Scene 7 he says, I m a busted Ingersoll, dat s

hope for a better future when the world does not care about them. The workers of the 1920s were
being exploited and downgraded into apes. Many immigrants traveled to the United States with
ambition and passion in search of a better life. After being greeted by the breathtaking beauty of the

poorly ventilated, and workers faced long hours for low wages. Just like Yank, naturally

The Role of Witchcraft in the Social Order
The newest generation in western society is being partially raised by films, literature, and music. Pop
culture is taking a bigger and bigger role in the upbringing of today s children. Images like Harry

many tribes and villages still believe in the power of witchcraft and see it as an enormous threat.

fact still remains that it is used to show order and give power to those who are willing to give up a life

Because slaves were always in a household and could not speak up because of their social and
economic status, the blame was often put of them regarding illness or poor fortune (Cassar, 1993:317).
Often slaves were put in a jail cell once a year to remind them of their social standing in society
(Cassar, 1993:329).The opposite side of this social blaming system, is that of trying to bring down
those who are on the higher economic and social ladder. This can be seen majorly in the Badyaranke
tribe. During the time the study was being conducted in the Badyaranke tribe that showed that those
who have a higher socioeconomic status in the tribe can often be accused of summoning the spirit of
Ufann (a spirit who exchanges a soul for healthy crops) and preforming witchcraft on their crops to
gain wealth in the community (Simmons, 1980:455). In both of these societies it is evident that the
community uses status as a means to inflict allegations of witchcraft.
Scapegoat
It is not rare that a community often needs a way to explain unexplainable occurrences. Humans in
western society always look for a science based logical reason to legitimize a situation. While this is a
common human trait, the science aspect can be lost on those nations that are geared more towards
religious of spiritual beliefs. Both the Badyaranke tribe and people of Malta during the seventeenth
century used

Exploring The Anglo-Saxon Hero
What is a hero? Perhaps it should be rephrased: who is a hero? Of course, it now becomes easy to
answer we can say Odysseus, as he didn t just assist in the victory at Troy, but fought the gods with his
longing for his home; or Beowulf, who fought of the terrible monsters in Hrothgar s kingdom as well
as his own; or Byrhtnoth, who died while defending the land he loved. Clearly, it is easy to list off the
heroes in these ancient poems. However, why is this so, why can we so easily identify heroes without
consciously recognizing the clues that lead us to those conclusions? While this question may remain
unanswerable without understanding psychology, it is still possible to understand what makes a hero

143). By telling Wiglaf to bring the treasure to him, Beowulf is showing the audience that despite his
imminent departure from the mortal world, he still possesses a greed for treasure. While some argue
that Beowulf is merely trying to understand the fate of his kingdom based on its newfound wealth, the
desire for treasure is nonetheless childish telltale signs of selfish attributes in Beowulf s character. The
story of the Volsung family contains the tale of Sigmund in The Saga of the Volsungs. Sigmund is also
a mythological character, due to his immediate relation to the mythical Volsung family, just like
Beowulf. His actions, such as becoming a wolf (just like Beowulf) with his incestuous son Sinfjotli in
the forest, embarking on an adventure to fight hunters, are clearly impossible without the mythological
or legendary setting. For this reason, we classify Sigmund as being mythological, since he could not
have been real, at least based this description.
Similar to Beowulf, audiences can observe crucial, dark characteristics of Sigmund that distinguish
him. His legendary feats are just that legendary. However, they also possess negative qualities. In the
previous example of how Sigmund and Sinfjotli put the skins on (The Saga of the Volsungs, p. 44),
Sigmund does not just run about the forest happily, he and Sinfjotli terrorize hunters by competing to

Adolf Hitler s Machiavellian Strategy Essay
Adolf Hitler s Machiavellian Strategy
Machiavelli s The Prince outlines tactics for a leader to seize and maintain lands under his power. His
tactics have been demonstrated repeatedly throughout history, and though his approach is hardly
ethical or idealistic, one cannot deny the fact that it has proved to be effective. Hitler is an example
that exemplifies the accuracy of what Machiavelli said would bring success in the acquisition of new
provinces. One topic Machiavelli focuses on, especially in Part II, are different types of troops. Had he
seen Hitler s army, he would have classified the troops as native, and would have applauded Hitler s

Furthermore it contained people from various religions, including Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and
atheists, such as communists. Hitler had built the support of an entire nativist Nazi army over the years
with the Beer Hall Putsch, his book Mein Kampf, a book that narrates his struggle in Germany, and his
tremendous oratory skills. Using this army he was able to bully his way into a dictatorial position and
dissolve the Reichstag, eliminating the last bit of democratic government left in Germany. Once in
power, he was able to successfully stay in power by using the guidelines given in The Prince. The
work acknowledges that mixed principalities are of the more difficult to control. To hold such a land
in your power, you must first extinguish the line of princes (15). In Hitler s case, the princes meant
anyone who had any sort of political power in Germany, and he was swift and efficient in killing them,
and outlawing their political parties. Machiavelli also said it is better not to share power, and Hitler
followed this by killing all those in his own Nazi party that had any sort of power, including his whole
elite blackshirt army. The final, and most important issue of maintaining a mixed principality is the
use of force and strict policies, which Hitler used without fail.

Discretion In Police Discretion
According to Dempsey et al (2016), Discretion means the availability of a choice of options or actions
one can take in a situation (p. 142).
An example of when police discretion was not used in a controlled and regulated manner was when
Mr. Samuel Dubose was shot and killed on July 19, 2015, over his front license plate missing on the
vehicle he was driving. Mr. Dubose was driving just south of University of Cincinnati around 6:30
p.m. when Officer Tensing began following him (Capehart, 2015). The university police share
jurisdiction with city officers on streets around the campus (Capehart, 2015). However, where the
driver was pulled over and killed at was outside of the shared jurisdiction. According to Capehart
(2015), The University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing lied about the events leading up to the
shooting and the officer s body worn camera exposed the truth of what really happened that day. In the
video, the officer is asking Mr. Dubose repeatedly for his driver s license . Mr. Dubose replies that he
has a driver s license but does not have it with him. Mr. Dubose also states that the missing license
plate is in the glove box. Officer Tensing asks, What s that bottle on the floor? Mr. Dubose reaches

  • 2. Persuasive Essay On The San Diego Zoo If your child s birthday is quickly approaching, you might be wondering how to celebrate. A party at home, whether just as a family or with the kid s friends, can be fun, but sometimes it is fun to do something beyond just cake and ice cream at home. If you are looking for something other than a party at home or even just pizza at your kid s favorite pizza parlor, consider these three birthday party options in San Diego. San Diego Zoo For kids who enjoy animals, the San Diego Zoo is a fun birthday celebration option. Their Australian Outback birthday bash includes admission to the zoo, lunch, and birthday cake. The kids will also get the opportunity to interact with some of the zoo animals and be entertained by some of the zoo s staff members. Unfortunately for older children, the Australian Outback Birthday Bash was only created for children up to 10 years old. It does not have to be your child s birthday to go to the zoo, though. The San Diego Zoo was ranked by Trip Advisor as the #1 Zoo in the World in 2015, and it consistently ranks as one of the Top Ten zoos in the world. Whether you are bringing along a large group of kids for your child s birthday celebration or you are simply going as a family, you can expect to see some of your favorite animals, including giant pandas, a Komodo dragon, and flamingos. You can even see unique animals, such as the okapi, which looks a bit like a mix of a zebra and a giraffe. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center If your child is a fan of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abraham Lincoln Fundamentally, public relation is relations with publics. (Public Relations Writing, 2000, p.10) The publics can be any group of people that shares a common interest. Through communication in different ways organizations want to establish, develop and maintain a positive relationship with different groups. This is just a basic definition of public relation but in fact it is much more challenging to really define and practice public relations. Due to the world s rapid change through advanced technology public relation became more and more a global activity. Nowadays it is one of the fastest growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anyways, through different definitions this essay gives you an overview and a better understanding of what public relations is and does. It shows you the importance and function of public relations in an organization especially in today s world. Public relations is the management of communication between an organization and its publics. (Grunig Hunt s, 1984) First of all it is important to recognize that pubic relation is a management function. The success of a company depends on relationships with the public such as consumers, suppliers, investors, employees, government and media. Since public relation practitioners are the once who do the actual communication between their organization and its public it is obvious that public relation is a management function. Public Relations is the management function that establishes and maintains mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and the publics on whom its success or failure depends. (Effective Public Relations, 2005, p.1) Public relation is a management function that helps achieve organizational objectives, define philosophy, and facilitate organizational change. Public relations practitioners communicate with all relevant internal and external publics to develop positive relationships and to create consistency between organizational goals and societal expectations. • 5. The Marine Corps And The Corps In recent history, the Marine Corps offered only limited options to the combatant commander to respond to crises. This response capability was usually resident within the Marine Expeditionary Unit in the form of noncombatant evacuation operations, foreign humanitarian assistance, and embassy reinforcement. However, as the global climate has shifted from a Cold War, or even OIF I, paradigm to one of small conflicts or crises of short duration. Within this context the Marine Corps continues to seek to match its unique capability sets to the dynamic challenges of the 21st century, developing concepts such as Expeditionary Force 21, which seeks to provide options for contingencies through globally dispersed assets and capabilities. The Marine Corps ability to execute in such an environment hinges on the MAGTF s center of gravity, the Aviation Combat Element (ACE), and specifically its game changer , the MV 22 Osprey. The unique capabilities of this aircraft, especially when coupled with the refueling capability of the C 130, truly provide a unique and efficient method to flow forces over distances inconceivable merely a generation ago. In this instance, the aircraft is the innovation: determining to apply a unique capability in regions of instability is simply logical. However, the semantics of what qualifies innovation is inconsequential. Marines, deployed as a self contained package, with all of their associated things, can rapidly respond to crisis, bridge gaps between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Scientific Revolution Essay During the Scientific Revolution scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, Descartes and Bacon wrestled with questions about God, human aptitude, and the possibilities of understanding the world. Eventually, the implications of the new scientific findings began to affect the way people thought and behaved throughout Europe. Society began to question the authority of traditional knowledge about the universe. This in turn, allowed them to question traditional views of the state and social order. No longer was the world constructed as the somewhat simple Ptolemaic Model suggested. The Earth for the first time became explicable and was no longer the center of the universe. Copernicus realized that the church would be quick to judge him, and possibly this is why he didn t publish his theories until late in his life. His discoveries were not so much as important as were his methods of observation and application of mathematics to explain the world. His methods of discovery helped model the direction of science over the next hundred years. Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as a professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the accuracy of the Churches representation of the world. The very nature of his findings pitted him as an opponent of the church. The Earth was not the center of the universe. My first impression when I walked in was wow and how they made all this. I also thought who came up with these design. There were many crazy and funny looking designs I really liked. I enjoyed the one with a big rock in the middle and sand around it. It was really simple but had so much meaning to it. I was pleased on how the staffs showed us around and treated us. They were interested on how we liked and didn t like the art there. There were so much fancy art there but one caught my eyes. Which was the picture of the flying babies. They told me the flying babies had the power to heal and to do good in the world. When the battles came they would sent them after all the soldiers needed help. If I had the power to heal people or myself that s what I would do. I also got to see the very old coins collections. I got to see a very special thing which was butterflies and moths on the wall. There were probably about thousand of each butterfly and moths. They were made of metal it was very unique. There was another special room we got to go in which was called the flashing lights. • 10. Why Did Connecticut Get Its Shape Essay How did Connecticut get its shape. Connecticut s landscape and surface change from 3 elements named tectonic plates, Glaciation, and Weathering and erosion. Tectonic plates Tectonic plates are the reason why earth s surface area isn t flat. Tectonic plate formed the Appalachian mountains and Mount Frisell. This happened millions of years ago, and the cause of the formation is that the tectonic plates collide into each other start to rise upwards. This brings up big pieces of rock from the crust to form mountains. Tectonic plate didn t just form mountains is Connecticut they also form valleys. Valleys are formed by the tectonic plates repelling off each other and creating a big, long valley that could hold water in them. The Downfall Of The Subprime Mortgage Market The Downfall of the Subprime Mortgage Market During the housing boom, the subprime mortgage market enhanced the revenues of lenders, investment bankers and investors alike. While some knew the trend would come to an end many did not. When the housing bubble burst and home prices declined the effect on those involved was enormous, financial institutions who originally had low debt to equity ratios, soon found themselves on the cusp of bankruptcy. Housing Bubble Due to the U.S. Governments relaxed lending stipulations and low interest rates, the demand for houses soared from 1996 to 2006, consequently increasing home prices across the country. On the other hand, the ubiquitous use of waste throughout the novel is a motif of both the byproduct and the opportunity cost of mankind s quests for fulfillment. Waste, whether as literal waste, wasted love, wasted lives, or objects all serve as a contrast to the value of the baseball as an object of fulfillment. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The baseball, as one possible objective for fulfillment, symbolizes the desires and goals of mankind. If the baseball is viewed in such a way (as a symbol of inherent human goals), then Nick and co. are not redeemed by the baseball. Instead, they are simply very human, driven by their pursuit of the fulfillment of lifelong objectives. However, where there is a quest for fulfillment, regret inevitably follows. The regret comes from either the failure in fulfillment or the opportunity cost (the sacrifice) of such a quest. For example, an investment banker may fail to ever become a managing director; and he might never become the journalist he was aspiring to be. This regret, ubiquitous throughout the novel, is represented by the motif of waste. For example, a prostitute whose silicone breasts had leaked [...] was unemployed now (246) after possibly failing in her desire to profit from prostitution. Another illustration of waste lies in The Wall, where children waste lives and pass away in the worst of the projects in New York. During this practical Danio rerio was used as the model, however the advantages and disadvantages of the use of both models will be discussed herein. Both Xenopus and Zebrafish are excellent model organisms in the study of development. They can both be generated in the lab at relatively low cost and development of the embryos can be observed within a relatively short time frame. The eggs themselves are also very easy to observe due to their transparency. Xenopus can be generated through in vitro fertilisation or natural mating with an optimal temperature of 23°C (Xenbase.org 2014). Zebrafish similarly can be generated in relatively large sizes, by maintaining them on long day photoperiods of about 14 hours of light and 10 hours of dark with their development, once fertilized and incubated between 26 28°C, hatching between 3 4 days (Bradford and Sun 1994). Both Xenopus and Zebrafish have a known genome and knockdowns of genes etc., can be easily performed and observed as micro manipulation of both Zebrafish and Xenopus are relatively easy to do as they are robust embryos. Many Kikuyus also live in Uganda and Tanzania, some having risen to national leadership. History: The Kikuyu traditionally believe that a man, Gikuyu, was the founder of the tribe. He had a wife named Mumbi, who gave birth to nine (plus one) daughters. The daughters married and had their own families, retaining a domineering role in Kikuyu society. This has led to the current division of the Kikuyu into nine (plus one) family groupings. According to legend, the men grew tired of their treatment by the women and rebelled. This legend seems to represent a change in history from matriarchal to patriarchal organization, which also occurred with other Bantu peoples. I find it very difficult to reconcile God s choosing the elect with the implications for those who are non elect. It seems very contradictory, and contrary to His nature, that an all loving God, who loves unregenerate persons as much (?) as regenerate persons, would essentially choose, whether actively or passively, individuals to spend eternity in hell. Admittedly, my own theological grasp of hell is somewhat lacking, as I don t really understand how allowing people to live in torment for all of eternity can be a loving action on God s part, although I know that it must somehow be loving. It seems to me that repentance, defined as the abandonment of sin, inspired by godly sorrow for our sin (Erickson 352), is still enabled, or even given to us, by the Lord, without whose influence we would not be capable, in our total depravity, of experiencing a truly godly sorrow over our sin. Also, I disagree with the argument that repentance moves us away from salvation by faith alone, as repentance is part of faith. True faith cannot be separated from repentance (352), as they are interwoven together, or two sides of the same coin (Zuck 5). For example, the self stated purpose of the Gospel of John is so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name (English Standard Version, John 20:31). The entire book of John, which is clearly evangelistic and dedicated to bringing people to faith in Christ (as God), does not speak of repentance at all, indicating its position as an aspect of conversion alongside faith, rather than as a separate entity in the process of salvation. Indeed, if repentance is distinct from faith as a requirement to be saved, then the full gospel is not given by John (Ironside 37 38), which is at odds with his evangelistic purpose. Lev Manovich believes that this history behind the digital world of today began with developments in the late Victorian time period. The dependent variable was reading comprehension, as measured by the Gates MacGinitie Reading Tests, fourth edition (GMRT 4; 2000). Students also completed a questionnaire regarding their study habits, music rating of the songs chosen for the experiment and if they preferred to study with or without music. Results indicated that the students scored better on performance and comprehension without music playing in the background. Those students that indicated they preferred to study with music and rated they liked the music selection in the experiment, had a significant decrease in comprehension. This study indicates that a student s music preference may be distracting if played while studying (Anderson Fuller, 2010). The final two studies tested subjects with various levels of musical training to asses a possible relationship between intelligence and music (Giovagnoli Raglio, 2011; Schellenberg, MUSIC AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO OVERALL INTELLECT 2011). While one study used older subjects (22 67) with higher musical education (9 50 years) !5 (Giovagnoli, Raglio, 2011) and the other younger subjects (9 12) with a minimal 2 years musical training, (Schellenberg, 2011) both concluded no significant relationship between intelligence and subjects with musical training. Stereotypes are characteristics put upon groups of people because of their race or nationality which typically misrepresents and denigrates individuals that are a part of a particular group. Robles (2013) claims that misconceptions are based on conceived cultural norms and practices which usually act to discriminate. • 32. Pros And Cons Of Homeland Security The United States border stretches for thousands of miles of harsh desert and forest landscape, between two oceans, over lakes and rivers and deals with the highest amount of immigrant traffic in the world. The U.S. has one of the toughest jobs in dealing with border security and the other issues that arise from economic and political ramifications, to securing the land, sea and air borders from unwanted entry by illegals immigrants, terrorists and contraband. Due to all these aspects, these make it difficult for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to get a handle on securing our nations border. Securing the border from illegal entry falls under the jurisdiction of the Custom Border protection (CBP) and Border Patrol, which both agencies are under the large DHS umbrella. These agencies were both created to handle these types of problems and have increased its work force numbers after the 9/11 attacks. This is actually when the U.S. really started to look at borders and locking them down from unwanted entry. With the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in March of 2003, the increase in the amount of federal officers on the border has nearly doubled to the sum of over 17,000 (DHS.gov, 2017). In this research paper, it will discuss the types of borders the United States has, what are the threats associated with the border, and what strategies are in place with Canada and Mexico to combat and prevents these threats from entering the country. • 33. William Oneill s The Hairy Ape Often times literature is used to reflect historical events of the time period in which the piece is written. Examining artifacts such as books, plays, or music is a way to gain insight into the social, political, and cultural attitudes of that time period. An example of a primary source of the 1920s would be Eugene Oneill s the Hairy Ape. In this play, the main character Yank falls victim to a technological movement, the Industrial Revolution. New ideas, technologies, and cultures were emerging, and Yank has to deal with the adversity of post WWI America. The play begins with a scene that incudes firemen working in the engine room of a ship talking amongst each other. This scene is depicts the transformation from human labor to machines, ... Yank truly believes he is what keeps society running smoothly. The United States had just won the first major world war and transformed themselves into an official world superpower, so the general vibe and attitude throughout the country was a positive one. However, as the play progresses, Yank slowly realizes how little impact his single soul can make. By the time he is kicked out of the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) office in Scene 7, he feels as though he is a broken machine that can no longer do work. Near the end of Scene 7 he says, I m a busted Ingersoll, dat s what. Steel was me, and I owned de woild. Now I ain t steel, and de woild owns me. Aw, hell! I can t see it s all dark, get me? It s all wrong! (O Neill 297). O Neill uses Yank to symbolize how people lose hope for a better future when the world does not care about them. The workers of the 1920s were being exploited and downgraded into apes. Many immigrants traveled to the United States with ambition and passion in search of a better life. After being greeted by the breathtaking beauty of the Statue of Liberty, what awaited these immigrants was life in the factories. The factories were crowded, poorly ventilated, and workers faced long hours for low wages. Just like Yank, naturally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pop culture is taking a bigger and bigger role in the upbringing of today s children. Images like Harry Potter flying on his broomstick during a game of quidditch, or the old lady from Brave creating potions. To the majority of Western Society, these situations are used for entertainment purposes, but many tribes and villages still believe in the power of witchcraft and see it as an enormous threat. Because slaves were always in a household and could not speak up because of their social and economic status, the blame was often put of them regarding illness or poor fortune (Cassar, 1993:317). Often slaves were put in a jail cell once a year to remind them of their social standing in society (Cassar, 1993:329).The opposite side of this social blaming system, is that of trying to bring down those who are on the higher economic and social ladder. This can be seen majorly in the Badyaranke tribe. During the time the study was being conducted in the Badyaranke tribe that showed that those who have a higher socioeconomic status in the tribe can often be accused of summoning the spirit of Ufann (a spirit who exchanges a soul for healthy crops) and preforming witchcraft on their crops to gain wealth in the community (Simmons, 1980:455). In both of these societies it is evident that the community uses status as a means to inflict allegations of witchcraft. Scapegoat It is not rare that a community often needs a way to explain unexplainable occurrences. Humans in western society always look for a science based logical reason to legitimize a situation. While this is a common human trait, the science aspect can be lost on those nations that are geared more towards religious of spiritual beliefs. • 35. Exploring The Anglo-Saxon Hero What is a hero? Perhaps it should be rephrased: who is a hero? Of course, it now becomes easy to answer we can say Odysseus, as he didn t just assist in the victory at Troy, but fought the gods with his longing for his home; or Beowulf, who fought of the terrible monsters in Hrothgar s kingdom as well as his own; or Byrhtnoth, who died while defending the land he loved. Clearly, it is easy to list off the heroes in these ancient poems. However, why is this so, why can we so easily identify heroes without consciously recognizing the clues that lead us to those conclusions? While this question may remain unanswerable without understanding psychology, it is still possible to understand what makes a hero tick his set of features ... By telling Wiglaf to bring the treasure to him, Beowulf is showing the audience that despite his imminent departure from the mortal world, he still possesses a greed for treasure. While some argue that Beowulf is merely trying to understand the fate of his kingdom based on its newfound wealth, the desire for treasure is nonetheless childish telltale signs of selfish attributes in Beowulf s character. The story of the Volsung family contains the tale of Sigmund in The Saga of the Volsungs. Sigmund is also a mythological character, due to his immediate relation to the mythical Volsung family, just like Beowulf. His actions, such as becoming a wolf (just like Beowulf) with his incestuous son Sinfjotli in the forest, embarking on an adventure to fight hunters, are clearly impossible without the mythological or legendary setting. For this reason, we classify Sigmund as being mythological, since he could not have been real, at least based this description. Similar to Beowulf, audiences can observe crucial, dark characteristics of Sigmund that distinguish him. His legendary feats are just that legendary. However, they also possess negative qualities. In the previous example of how Sigmund and Sinfjotli put the skins on (The Saga of the Volsungs, p. 44), Sigmund does not just run about the forest happily, he and Sinfjotli terrorize hunters by competing to kill more ... His tactics have been demonstrated repeatedly throughout history, and though his approach is hardly ethical or idealistic, one cannot deny the fact that it has proved to be effective. Hitler is an example that exemplifies the accuracy of what Machiavelli said would bring success in the acquisition of new provinces. One topic Machiavelli focuses on, especially in Part II, are different types of troops. Hitler had built the support of an entire nativist Nazi army over the years with the Beer Hall Putsch, his book Mein Kampf, a book that narrates his struggle in Germany, and his tremendous oratory skills. Using this army he was able to bully his way into a dictatorial position and dissolve the Reichstag, eliminating the last bit of democratic government left in Germany. Once in power, he was able to successfully stay in power by using the guidelines given in The Prince. The work acknowledges that mixed principalities are of the more difficult to control. To hold such a land in your power, you must first extinguish the line of princes (15). In Hitler s case, the princes meant anyone who had any sort of political power in Germany, and he was swift and efficient in killing them, and outlawing their political parties. Machiavelli also said it is better not to share power, and Hitler followed this by killing all those in his own Nazi party that had any sort of power, including his whole elite blackshirt army. • 37. Discretion In Police Discretion According to Dempsey et al (2016), Discretion means the availability of a choice of options or actions one can take in a situation (p. 142). An example of when police discretion was not used in a controlled and regulated manner was when Mr. Samuel Dubose was shot and killed on July 19, 2015, over his front license plate missing on the vehicle he was driving. Mr. Dubose was driving just south of University of Cincinnati around 6:30 p.m. when Officer Tensing began following him (Capehart, 2015). The university police share jurisdiction with city officers on streets around the campus (Capehart, 2015). However, where the driver was pulled over and killed at was outside of the shared jurisdiction. According to Capehart (2015), The University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing lied about the events leading up to the shooting and the officer s body worn camera exposed the truth of what really happened that day. In the video, the officer is asking Mr. Dubose repeatedly for his driver s license . Mr. Dubose replies that he has a driver s license but does not have it with him. Mr. Dubose also states that the missing license plate is in the glove box. Officer Tensing asks, What s that bottle on the floor? Mr. Dubose reaches down, picks up the bottle of gin and gives it to the officer (Capehart, 2015).
