The Origins Of Piracy In The 17th Century
The origins of modern piracy can be traced back to the 17th century when European states began
to commercially compete for trade routes via the high seas to exploit new markets for trade and
resources. At the time oceans, lacked any regulation, law, and order. Countries such as England,
France, and Spain hired pirate groups to attack enemy ships and steal materials that were found
on board. This time period is often referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy, however, piracy
continues to occur even today. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number
of attacks on vessels by pirates, particularly in the Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin and the Indian
Ocean. In the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea piracy is defined as illegal

Individual Theme Exposition Essay
Innovation has become one of the most important issues in modern culture, these days not only in
the context of business and technology but also in environmental and climate changes. The changes
in the environment impacts economies, populations, governments and cultures at a local level
(Woerd 2002). Woerd (2002) also mentions that changes at a local level contribute to changes at a
national and global level. All organisations worldwide are suffering with the environmental
impacts that are places on them, and need to implement changes that are going to be achievable.

The Pursuit Of Happiness In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott...
Throughout the year, I have learned multiple things and gained a whole new perspective about the
pursuit of happiness from our exploration of American Literature this year. From every piece of
literature we read, the overall goal was to have someone pursue their happiness in their own way. I
learned that someone s happinessmight be different than another person s happiness and that s
okay. Each individual has their own dreams and goals, but overall, everyone has one goal in mind.
That is to achieve happiness in their life.
One piece of literature that is a prime example of the pursuit of happiness is The Great Gatsby.
Throughout the novel, many of the characters were trying to pursue happiness. Jay Gatsby, for
example, was trying to win Daisy over again. He wanted to recreate the past when he was
happily in love with her. Gatsby went to great lengths to interest Daisy and grab her attention.
Gatsby was in love, but the only way he could be truly happy is if he had Daisy to himself. Gatsby
threw elaborate parties at his mansion that he built all for Daisy. Once Gatsby finally started gaining

Analysis Of The Movie Phoenix Jackson
When using symbolism, objects or even people can be used to represent your answer or
explanation. For example, Uncle Sam (U.S) was a symbol for the United States when they were
going to war, and they put up the famous poster of Uncle Sam pointing his finger at you with the
slogan on the bottom of the poster that says I want you! Food can also be used as a symbol. For
example, fried chicken, hot dogs, and hamburgers are foods commonly consumed in America, while
in other countries, they probably haven t even heard about hamburgers, because we are all
accustomed to what we eat.
In the beginning of the short story, Phoenix Jackson is introduced as an elderly woman making her
way in the woods talking to herself and saying no one is going to stop her from making her
journey. First, she gets stuck in a thorn bush, but gets out of it. Then she has to cross a creek on
a log, but because of her age, something bad could happen, so she closed her eyes and crossed.
She sat near a tree to rest, and began to daydream of a little boy giving her a slice of marble cake,
which she gladly accepts, but when she tried to take it, she was just waving her hand in the air.
She sees a Scarecrow, who she mistakenly takes it as a man, and then a ghost, and starts to dance
with it. She keeps walking, when a black dog came at her a little and knocked her over, and fell
into a ditch. A white man sees her and helps her up, but when phoenix sees a

Reinhold Niebhur s Views On Original Sin
Reinhold Niebhur s views on Original sin fall in line with my own actually; I do believe that
man is inherently evil with power to do good. As much of a blessing that free will is, I believe it
to also be a curse because nothing good comes free. With the freedom to make our decisions
comes the responsibilty to not only know but also to understand the effects of them. Every action
has a reaction, and sin is the reaction to free will. Niebuhr holds that man is responsible for his
unintentional sins, even if there was no malice. Niebuhr argues through Pauline teachings that sin
is essential; especially with man s tendency for self glorification. Pauline teachings indicate that
human sin is an inevitable defect derived from the sin of the first man .... Show more content on

This is easily seen because humans are faulty beings, who often fall into error even with good
intentions. Our faulty minds and free will can easily fll prey deception and misinterpretation of
what we think we saw with ignorance and imagination filling the gaps, and no matter what level of
mental fortitude, sense of morality, or innate holiness man possesses. Man still falls subject to
deception. If our minds, which are factors in our free will, can be subjected to manipulation, it is
not bizarre to claim that man sins unintentionally and is responsible to correct its actions.
Man s biggest flaw is its weakness in the face of temptation because temptation also lies in its
heart. Man s free will is inherently corrupted by the temptations of life and the world. While free
will pushed man s creativity to what seems to be a limitless boundary, it has also played a part in
man s own undoing. Man s undoing lies in their ego and desire for self gratification and self
glorification. They constantly strive to expand their presence and knowledge so much so that it
seems to know no bounds. However even with man s ambition it is all subject to God s

Descartes First Meditations By Rene Descartes
In RenГ© Descartes First Meditations, he introduces three main sceptical arguments for the
possibility of doubt: illusion, dreaming and error. Descartes purpose in his First Meditations is to
define knowledge by placing doubt on the sceptical arguments capacity to provide truth. In this
essay, I will focus on the argumentfrom dreaming. There are many objections against the argument;
therefore I will assess the soundness of the argument and whether it establishes universal doubt
based on the plausibility of the objections. Moreover, I will further conclude that it is possible to
know if we are dreaming or not at any given moment and that we are not always in a dream.
The argument of dreaming
The principle premise of the argument from dreaming is that there are no sure signs by means of
which being awake can be distinguished from being asleep. This leads to the premise that one
often feels sensations and perceptions similarly to when one is awake. Then, it is possible that we
do not know if we are dreaming right now or not. This is a valid argument which attacks all sense
perception and allows us to doubt even the most ordinary and certain things, as you may be
dreaming them rather than actually experiencing it.
Objections to the argument
Descartes hypothesizes that we cannot distinguish the state of being in a dream and being awake.
As a result, he concludes that our sensory perception is unreliable, and we should strip down our
judgement through sensory perception and

Reducing Risk Factors of Children’s Resilience Essay
Reducing Risk Factors of Children s Resilience This paper will examine the concept of resilience
as it has emerged in the research literature of Grotberg (1995). It will evaluate the effectiveness of
the concept in the area of developing more effective protective factors for children and families
subjected to vulnerability and adversity. It will be noted that resilience needs to be promoted on
three fronts, work on individual resilience strategies, promotion of resilience through the
organisations and agencies, such as school and the curriculum, family welfare services and
promotion of resilience in the community. This paper concentrates on those aspects of reducing the
risk factors and increasing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The concept of resilience is closely associated with risk and suggests that at risk children and
families are more likely to develop an adverse outcome or disorder than others, which includes
poverty, unemployment, homelessness, poor health, single parenting and divorce, organisational,
social, cohort and family line diversity. Given the conceptual complexities of resilience, it is
important to take stock of the individual factors, family dynamics e.g. step families, adoption,
fostering and environmental difficulties such as war, drought, cultural beliefs, which resilience
develops. Such a conceptual framework is likely to provide a useful yet multidimensional
conceptualisation of resilience. Focusing on these individual, familial, and environmental risk and
protective factors, their influence on the landscape of reunification and re entry opens new avenues
for exploration, which lead to more effective interventions for children and families (Rapoprt
Rapoprot, 1982). Although protective and risk have often been used interchangeably in the
literature, Rutter (1999) sees resilience as the attribute that characterise and structuralise the
conceptual framework of protective perspective. The protective perspective emphasises the
resources, assets, potentials, and capabilities of children, groups, families, and communities
(Bernards, 1997). This approach also marks a definitive

shy behaviour by recounting multiple personal anecdotes; Buckley then attempts to link this

The Arrows Between Cortisol And The Three Core Needs
The arrows between cortisol and the three core needs are shown as a dashed arrow to reflect the
negative relationships against fandom/ fanship formation. The solid arrows circulate from output to
sporting events participation reveal the impacts of different psychological or behavioral
consequences may influence the desire to participate in sporting events, therefore, activate next
round of neurochemical release. Hence, the fanatic behaviorwill be continually reinforced or
weakened.
For example, a blowout loss to an archrival or a shocking loss to a lower seeded opponent may
cause negative emotions such as displeasure, anger and shame, thus trigger cortisol. At that
moment, the fan realizes that he cannot satisfy his needs, so he tries to do something to stop the
anger. He may avoid discussing the shameful experience with his friends or refuse to read or watch
any media coverage of this embarrassing loss (Partridge, Wann, Elison, 2010). If he undergoes this
suffering frequently, his fandom identification and spectating motivationwill eventually vanish and
then he may try to involve in another activity that can trigger his happy chemicals and satisfy his
needs.
Spectating sporting events does not produce negative outcomes all the time; it actually can trigger
another type of chemicals that make sport fans want to maximize their participation. For instance,

The Theme Of Life In Dante s Inferno
After reading Dante s Divine Comedy or Dante s Inferno by Dante Alighieri, it would appear
that this is a story about a man describing how his exile is leading him towards hell. At the
beginning of the story, Dante starts out by saying, In the middle of the journey of our life I
found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost (page 27). The reader will
assume that this story is about Dante explaining his views of hell separated into nine circles.
Alighieri s writings gave context relating to his life from his exile to his beloved.
The story Dante s Inferno is about a man s journey through hell. The main character, Dante, has
just been exiled from his home and is now trying to find the right road. The significance of the
beginning is the religious aspect of Dante s adventure of leaving to another realm. In my
opinion, the straight way is through faith in God. The dark woods represents sins and fear in
God. He was lost in sin and he sets out to look for God in a sinful world. The Guelph Ghibelline
Wars was a struggle between the papacy and the holy roman empire. There was a split, which
created two factions in the Guelphs. One was a white faction, which supported independence from
the Pope. The other was the black, whose people were willing to work with the Pope. Alighieri was
fighting with for white faction. Those against the Pope, including Dante, were exiled from the
Italian Peninsula. Dante felt lost in the world and wanted to find confidence in God

The Successes and Failures of the Zapatista Movement Essay
The Successes and Failures of the Zapatista Movement
On January 1, 2004, over one thousand people in the mountain hamlet of Oventic, Chiapas,
celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rebellion with
song and dance. Thus, it seems a fitting time to take stock of the successes and failures of the
Zapatista movement in the context of its original goals. While the EZLN has been able to establish
thirty eight autonomous indigenous communities in Chiapas, it has failed to weaken the Mexican
government s commitment to neo liberal economic policies. In the following pages, we will explore
those factors which enabled the Zapatistas to establish regions of autonomy and extrapolate from

refusal to take money from the mal gobierno (bad government).? In addition, the Zapatistas have
created five organizational centers (caracoles) and established Juntas of Good Government in each
of them in order to ?resolve conflicts and disequilibrium between the centers and the outlying
autonomies.? The caracoles mark the EZLN?s first success with regional, as opposed to municipal,
autonomy. These Zapatista achievements can be attributed to the local terrain of Chiapas,
restrictive legislation, and local and national scrutiny.
The Mexican government has faced legal and practical restraints on launching an all out war on
the Zapatistas. The first government counter attacks encountered tactical difficulties in the
jungles of Chiapas and the army failed to score a quick military victory. In 1995, the federal
congress passed a ?law for dialogue,? which foreclosed the option of a unilateral show of force by
the Mexican army in areas under Zapatista control. This legislation catalyzed the signing of the San
AndrГ©s Accords by the EZLN and the Zedillo government. The San AndrГ©s Accords, as well as
the inaccessibility of the jungles of Chiapas, made overt military action politically and tactically
unviable. The EZLN?s national popularity and visibility also guaranteed its survival. Though the
Mexican government maintained a

Essay on Agrarian Woes in the Late 19th Century
The end of the 19th century brought to farmers astringent policies enforced by railroad companies,
once stable cash crops like cotton and wheat now selling at such low profit margins due to inflation
that farmers continued to end up in the red, spikes in foreign competition due to leaps and bounds
in transportation, and all of this in the wake of a devastating drought that brought with it the
degradation of businesses throughout the west. This agricultural depression culminated into the
Populist movement, founded on the premise of the politicalization of the farmers plight. However,
much of the negative stigma put onto the precipitants of the industrial revolution by farmers was

Competition between rail lines made profit supersede the consumer. Small farmers and shippers
received the short end of the stick when companies offered rebates and price cuts to larger shippers,
and while this helped to stimulate big business, many farmers were left in the dust when they found
themselves unable to compete with the high rates. Railroads cut rates on longer distances and
raised them on shorter trips. They claimed that rebating was generating the profit which enabled
them to stay afloat. Farmers were sometimes hit with the realization that railroads had the power to
put them out of business with freight rates being raised only a few cents, [Document H]. Late 19th
century farmers were correct in that they were vulnerable to ruin by many shady railroad
practices. Massive westward expansion led to overproduction, which piled on to the farmers woes
when the volume of product was increasing, yet prices were dropping. New mechanical leaps in
agriculture, and endless farmland spiked an unnecessary volume of production out west. Falling
prices caused by deflation provoked the most criticism from farmers. Cash crops like wheat and
cotton saw a staggering drop in value during the late 19th century, and when many farmers had
invested so much into new machinery, it became harder and harder to get out of the red. The

Theme Of No Man Is An Island
No Man is an Island We are all a part of the main
No person is truly isolated from the rest of the world. Nonetheless, people feel lonely or
purposeless in life. In No Man Is an Island by John Donne, he claims that no person is an island of
their own. Donne talks about humanity, unity, and mortality, which originate from his illness, and
the recent death of his wife for whom the bell tolls. (12) Through the use of an extended earth
metaphor, symbols, and shift in tone, Donne conveys the importance of humankind and life.
(Mention something about his deceased wife, and him being terminally ill)
Donne starts off this poem with an extended earth metaphor. No man is an island, entire of itself;
(1). This line is used to open the poem with a strong statement. This line helps begin the extended
by stating that no individual is completely isolated. Donne continues this into next lines, every man

This weighed on his mind and was the cause of inspiration for this poem. Donne believed that
everyone matters; whether you were rich or poor. No matter what class you were sectioned into,
you had an effect on the rest of the people around you. In this poem, Donne is able to convey his
belief that everyone matters, no matter how insignificant they seem, with the help of an extended
earth metaphor, symbols, and shift in tone. He uses an extended metaphor where he compares the
different groups of people to earthy symbols, and as he continues through the sections, he writes
more individually. This shift in tone helps the audience feel more connected to the words because
Donne is speaking in first person, making it more personal. This personal message is absorbed by
the reader through the help of symbols, which make it easier for the reader to connect and relate to
the mean of the poem. Everyone has a purpose and makes an

sculptors of fifteenth century Italy, his work was a stepping stone for the rebirth of art. Although
his work is almost 600 years old, it is still held in very high esteem today (Funk and Wagnalls).
Some of his defining pieces include The Feast of Herod, his bronze statue of David, and
Gattamelata; these pieces made such a big impact on the Renaissancethat we can still feel tremors
today, making Donatelloone of the best artists of all time. In 1427, Donatello crafted The Feast of
Herod; it was a relief for the baptismal font in the Siena Cathedral in Italy, where it is still housed
today. The Feast of Herod is a bronze relief that depicts a slave of Herod s presenting the severed
head of John the Baptist to Salome (World Biography). The piece is amazing and had a big
impact on the Renaissance because Donatello created a very dramatic scene on such a shallow
space. In the foreground, we have the severed head being presented and the people reacting with
very deep emotion; while in the background people are just going on oblivious to what has just been

The statue was a portrayal of Erasmo da Nami who was a military hero in Padua, where the
statue was created and remains today (Funk and Wagnalls). Gattamelata was a stepping stone for
sculpting. It was not only the first equestrian statue of the Renaissance, but also an amazing
sculpture because it was done in bronze and was such a big project. It took Donatello nearly 3
years to complete and nearly another 3 to get it displayed in the public. It took so long to get
displayed, because bronze equestrian statues used to be reserved for Roman nobility, and it took
time to break the tradition (A Guide to Italian Renaissance Art and Architecture). The statue is
considered to be the basis for every equestrian military portrayal after

Essay about Puerto Rican Migration to Nyc
Christine CostanzoPuerto Rican Migration to New York City
The story of the Puerto Rican people is unique in the history of U.S. immigration, just as Puerto
Rico occupies a distinctive and sometimes confusing position in the nation s civic fabric. Puerto
Rico has been a possession of the U.S. for more than a century, but it has never been a state. Its
people have been U.S. citizens since 1917, but they have no vote in Congress. As citizens, the
people of Puerto Rico can move throughout the 50 states just as any other Americans can legally,
this is considered internal migration, not immigration. However, in moving to the mainland, Puerto
Ricans leave a homeland with its own distinct identity and culture, and the transition can ... Show

factory owners and employment agencies had begun recruiting heavily on the island. In addition,
the postwar years saw the return home of thousands of Puerto Rican war veterans, whose service in
the U.S. military had shown them the world. But perhaps the most significant cause was the sudden
availability of affordable air travel. After centuries of immigration by boat, the Puerto Rican
migration became the first great airborne migration in U.S. history. The first great generation of
Puerto Rican migrants established communities in cities throughout the country, including Chicago,
Philadelphia, and Newark, as well as in mid Atlantic farm villages and the mill towns of New
England. However, since the 1930s, the capital of Puerto Rican culture in the mainland U.S. has
been New York City. Despite its great distance from the Caribbean, New York had long been the
landing point of seagoing Puerto Ricans, and the airborne newcomers followed suit. The new
migrants settled in great numbers in Northeast Manhattan, in a neighborhood that soon became
known as Spanish Harlem. Although many had been farm workers in Puerto Rico, they know
found themselves working in a wide variety of jobs, staffing the hospitals, the hotels, the garment
factories, and the police departments of their new hometown, and they soon became a significant
force in the city s political and cultural life. The migration to the 50 states slowed

Essay Corrections System
When it comes to corrections, it is clear what their mission is and that is to incarcerate criminals,
however it also ensures that those incarcerated receive treatment to prepare them for reintegration
and reentry into society. Ever since the creation of prisons, some wonder how we managed to
survive without them in the past. Unfortunately, we do have neither the resources nor the capital
to incarcerate all who chose to engage in criminal behavior. Utilizing other programs like
probation are needed in order to accommodate those who wish to offend. According to McShane

so bad that they violated the Eighth Amendment and the CDCR needed to reduce the prison
population by 30,000 inmates.
The public is concerned because; some of those offenders will end up living among us in our
neighborhoods. It appears like the Supreme Court officials have forgotten that the offenders that
they are releasing are criminals. Why are these officials willing to place a large amount of these
offenders that were convicted by the courts back into society and jeopardize our public safety? I
am concerned that due to the high case load our probation and parole officers face that many of
these offenders will go unsupervised. Fortunately, our corrections system still continues to hire
new officer to help with probation and parole which are the two major programs that track and
ensure most of these offenders are being supervised and they also help with prison overcrowding.
Probation has been part of our society for many years. Probation was first used as a rehabilitative
and supervisory tool to keep those low level offenders out of jail. Today it is used as a strict
supervisory tool that monitors offenders at home. Our corrections system is constantly changing and

Themes Of The Princess Bride And Diablo 3 And Billy Budd
In literature, there are many written works which have themes that intermix with one another.
While literature contains many themes, this does not mean that other works do not contain the
same ideas as presented in written works. In the three stories of The Princess Bride , Diablo 3
and Billy Budd Violence and Quests can be seen largely throughout each tale. Violence, while still
having the tradition sense of the word, does not always mean fighting someone or physical attacks.
Violence thematically is the display of aggressive actions verbally, physically, or even aggression
leading to a goal. The other overarching theme in these stories is that of a Quest. Any self realizing
adventure where the protagonist realizes is considered a quest thematically as well as a large set
goal for as seen within the story. The main themes of The Princess Bride, Diablo 3 and Billy Budd
are Quests as well as Violence which show a deep connection on a thematic level.
In The Princess Bride by William Goldman the story starts both as an explanation of the story s
origin as well as where the story should go. Even in this prolog to the story a quest is outlined.
And I realized that I had let control of it go. . . They could change anything they wanted. So I did
something of which I am genuinely proud. I bought the book back from the studio, with my own
money (Goldman xxxv). Even before the story begins a quest was set before the reader. The quest
of a man to have the book he loved

Revocable Trust Essay
Revocable Trusts
Perhaps the greatest advantage of setting up a revocable trust is avoiding the probate process. A
trust is especially beneficial if you own real estate in more than one state. Without a trust, your
loved ones will be faced with probate proceedings in each state you own property in. A trust
accomplishes the distribution of assets to your beneficiaries who should receive them. However, a
trust is generally considered to possess superior advantages over a probate for several reasons.
пЃ¬A trust provides a private, non probate administration. The only persons entitled to notice or
accounting of trust assets are the beneficiaries. Distribution of trust assets can often be

Probate is considered a public proceeding, and literally anyone can read your probate file, and your
will once it is filed. A trust doesn t require being filed with the court, so there is no file for anyone
to see.
Drawbacks
пЃ¬Initially, it will cost more to set up a revocable trust than to write a Last Will and Testament.
However, in the long run a trust will reduce stress and your family will save money by avoiding
probate when you die, and guardianship if you were to become incapacitated or disabled.
пЃ¬Unfortunately, you will still need a will, a special one to cover unfunded assets. If you miss
an asset, or die before transferring all your assets into the trust a special will created for this
situation will protect them. The will requires probating, but will only cover the unfunded assets.
Nevertheless, it is a consideration when your still in the decision process of whether or not to
establish a revocable trust.
пЃ¬Contesting a trust may allow a longer period of time than a will. Whereas contesting a will is
typically allowed for 30 to 90 days, contesting a trust can be allowed for as long as 5 years
depending on the individual states statute of limitations. However, a few states are beginning to

senior at Virginia Tech ruthlessly murdered 32 people and wounded 17 others through the usage
of firearms in two separate attacks. This incident is considered the deadliest shooting incident by
a single gunman in the history of America. While people still mourn and pray for the victims,
this shooting also led to many controversies. Till this day, Cho s access to firearm and Virginia

An enlightened and benevolent anarchism, such as expressed by the terms, anarcho pacifism
/ anarcho socialism, is, in my view, the only anarchism that can ever work. To arrive at an anarcho
pacifist / anarcho socialist society, we as a global community must undergo great psychological
transformation. Only then can anarchism become a practical ideology for the world.
However, we as individuals need not wait for all humanity to find anarchy before we can have
anarchy for ourselves. We can manifest anarchy within our own circles of being, individually, here
and now; thus becoming individually liberated.
The anarchist truly has the best political deal. Whereas the fascist depends upon a fascist
government to have fascism, the state socialist upon a socialistic government to have socialism, the
democrat upon a democratic government to have democracy, and the libertarian capitalist upon a
libertarian government to have laissez faire capitalism, the anarchist can choose to have anarchy,
here and now, without any government.
Anarchy, the way I see it, is a personal choice, depending on nothing but one s own true will. If
one wants anarchy for oneself, one can have it, regardless of the political system society has. All
the anarchist needs to do

Australopithecus Afarensis, and Australopithecus Africanus...
The phylogeny started off with Proconsul heseloni as the common ancestor to Sivapithecus indicus,
Australopithecus afarensis, and Australopithecus Africanus. The reasoning for this was from the
approximated age of Proconsul heseloni of 23 million years ago. This places Sivapithecus indicus
roughly 15 million years after, suggesting that Sivapithecus indicus directly evolved from Proconsul
heseloni.
From Proconsul heseloni, it was decided that three species evolved from it. These species included
A. A. afarensis, A. africanus and Sivapithecus indicus. Sivapithecus indicus was branched off the
early human evolutionary line as the characteristics from the dentation and skull characteristics
differed from that of A. afarensis and A. africanus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This difference can be used to infer that they lived in different areas of the world as it can be
assumed that the diets of the two were unalike, explaining the dissimilarity of the canine size. As it
is inferred that the two species lived in different regions of the world, it can be assumed that they
co existed at the same time period.
Homo habilis followed A. africanus indicating that A. africanus was a direct ancestor of H.
habilis. The reasoning for this included the brain weight and body weight of the H. habilis slightly
increased from that of A. africanus. As there was a general increase the overall brain to body
weight ratio, indicating that there was an increase in the overall body weight of the two.
Homo erectus was branched off after H. habilis as the justification for this was from the muzzle
angles of the different species. As H. erectus had a muzzle angle of 107В° it was decided that it
was reasonable to assume that H. erectus evolved from H. habilis. However, in the overall
positioning of the phylogeny, it was placed on a side branch off H. habilis. This reasoning for this
was that if H. erectus was placed on the main evolutionary line to evolve from H. ergaster, the
muzzle angles from H. ergaster, H. erectus, and Homo neaderthalensis would increase then
decrease. It would not be logical to place H. erectus on the main evolutionary line. Further
justification that H. erectus was not a direct ancestor

The Ethicality Of Human Experimentation
Human experimentation has always been a highly controversial topic and practice. It deals with
the use of human subjects taking part in tests for usually scientific and/or medical purposes.
These tests are done for the end goal of furthering knowledge in certain scientific fields. While it
does have its benefits, it has an immense negative stigma attached to it, and for understandable
reasons. In 1896, a man by the name of Arthur Wentworth performed an operation on 29 children
at a Boston hospital to see if the procedure itself was harmful. His efforts were noted as being
virtually non therapeutic and were given the label of vivisection, which is now a modern, general
term for live experimentation. This however was not the origin of humanexperimentation.... Show

Some of the earliest instances of human experimentation include 1st century s Cleopatra. During
her reign, she tested a belief at the time that concluded it only took 40 days to fully develop a

be inseminated and their wombs cut open during different gestational phases while they were under
a government death sentencing order. An early practice to examine the workings of the human
body indeed, but it is not by far the only one. Two surgeons from the 3rd century of Alexandria by
the names of Herophilus and Erasistratus frequently practiced human experimentation on live
convicted criminals. They were particularly interested in discovering more of the human anatomy
and how it works. Their methods would be considered far too extreme today, as would many

Rather, those funds should really be used to hire highly qualified teachers and to purchase and

In the first test for monosaccharaides using Benedict s solution, glucose was the positive control

monosaccharaides contain aldehyde groups. Three disaccharides, maltose, sucroseand lactose were

the hypothesis. Maltose and lactose both turned brownish red which means they are reducing
sugars and sucrose did not change colors which means it tested negative and is a non reducing

John Keats s Ode To A Nightingale And Romantic Expressivism

ENGL 204
Dr. Callis
John Keats s Ode to a Nightingale and Romantic Expressivism John Keats s Ode to a Nightingale
is one of the most recognized and studied pieces of poetry from the 19th century, with the critic
Allen Tate even going on to say that this ode at least tries to say everything that a poet can say
(Vendler). Keats was an educated writer and knew very well what he was talking about and was
able to do amazing things with a simple string of words. Keats s piece is written in the time of
Romantic Expressivism and every word that he writes inside of Ode to a Nightingale accurately
portrays the themes and concepts of this time period briefness of our time on earth, mortality, a
different and sometimes confusing look at the world around us (whether through our own eyes or
some force on us), nature and all of its beauty, and the words that contain the strength to transport
the reader to another place or time. In order to understand Keats s Ode to a Nightingale and how
it connects to Romantic Expressivism, we first need to understand what Romantic Expressivism
is and how it was created. The last major poet to write in the 18th Century was Alexander Pope.
He believed over was built into the universe inside of the great chain of being. He believed there
was a natural order stretching down from God and the angels to the lowest form of life on earth.
After him, writers, such as Keats, came along to question this thought and

Language and Memory Paper
Introduction
Language is important to the way we communicate. Semantic memory is acquired over the years
and is vital to language. Language becomes second nature when we already know what, when and
how to say something. We form sentences, phrases, paragraphs by planning what we say and how
we will say it. Most people believe that when we speak, it is without thought and is done
unconsciously. However, in this paper I will seek to explain the relationship between semantic
memory and language production.
Explain the nature and function of semantic memory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For every action, there is a reason for it. We have to appreciate our cognitive processes and
continuing to understand how they work and what goes into making them work is so rewarding.
Analyze the basic functions of language
Pinker (1994c) esteems language as the jewel in the crown of cognition. Language serves the
purpose of communicating or revealing our cognitive processes. The beautiful thing about language
is that it is one of most complex and valuable aspect of cognition (Robinson Riegler amp; Robinson
Riegler, 2008). Babies are able to learn language and sometime understand the language before they
can speak it. There are different types of languages: sign language, English, Spanish, Dutch, French,
Braille. All of these are ways that people communicate with one another depending on their culture
and mental/physical circumstances (deaf, blind).
One characteristic of language is that everything we refer to is symbolized by a word. The way
we put words in a sentence and combine them to make sense, would conclude that we have a basic
understanding of what role words play in a sentence (noun, verb, pronoun). We would not know
this if not through language. Through language we are able to speak, write, read and understand.
As Robinson Riegler (2008) brings out, all the words a person knows comprise their mental
lexicon and is a part of our semantic memory.
When we talk about language, we also should

However, the United States and Russia both appear to stand steadfast due to a fear of showing
weakness. However, eventually egos are set aside, and cooler heads prevail allowing the two
nations to begin talks of de escalating the situation. Now, each country is ready with a set of
specific demands for the other government to agree upon to allow negotiations to succeed. For
instance, the Russian Prime Minister demands that the United States agree not to invade Cuba after
the Russian troops and supplies pull back from the island (History.com Staff, 2009). Also, the
United States President requires that all Russian ballistic missiles return to their garrison base.
Now, both countries agree to the initial terms with little hesitation. However, later on, the Russian
Prime Minister asks for an additional condition of the United States; the Russian Prime Minister
asks for all missiles that currently reside in Turkey go back to the United States (Scott Smith, 1994,

situation. Furthermore, the break of an all out nuclear war aids in opening a new streamlined form
of communications between the two nations to enable prompt dialogs. Now, that there is a

An Eco Friendly Practice For Your Lawn And Garden
It seems so ridiculous that gardening would be an area where we need to be environmentally
conscious. After all, if you are growing green things, it should be an eco friendly practice by
default, shouldn t it? Unfortunately, mostly for the sake of modern convenience, there are now
so many chemicals tied up in gardening either to make your veggies pest free and fruitful or to
make certain your flowers are weed free and extra large that we almost negate the positive
ecological impact of growing plants. Fortunately, there are ways to have it all well fertilized, bug
less plants, and a clear, green conscience. All you need to do is use all natural, environmentally
sound products for your lawn and garden. The first product you want to check out is a little thing
called diatomaceous earth. Frankly, it has so many benefits, it is almost like cheating. It is both
a pest control agent and a growth medium, and it retains water and nutrients, while assisting with
drainage. The primary drawbacks are the potential for harm to helpful insects and the dangers of
inhalation, depending on which type you buy (though these are no different than the risks with
chemical insecticides). If you visit your local nursery or big box home improvement store, they
should be able to help you find some easily. It may sound like a joke, but if you are looking for

The establishment of the Union Stock Yardsin 1865 led to the expansion of meatpacking in
southside Chicago. Before private stock yards were created, tavern owners provided land and care
for cattle herds waiting to be sold. With the increasing service of railroads throughout the United

This book described the horrifying conditions in the stockyards and meatpacking industry. The
story depicts a young man and woman who have recently immigrated to Chicago from
Lithuania. They have a wedding feast at a bar in Packingown. The couple and some of their
relatives go to Chicago for a better life but Packingtown, the center of the city s meatpacking
industry, is dangerous, filthy, and hard. It was also difficult to find a job. The couple become a
hundred dollars in debt to the saloonkeeper and Jurgis has faith in the American dream that he
could just work harder to make more money. They go through struggles with hard laboring jobs
such as digging freight tunnels (which resulting in him going to the hospital), getting arrested
because of attacking a man for not giving him correct change, he starts to commit crimes such as
burglaries and soon gets recruited to work for a corrupt political boss. His spirit soon gets
crushed by misery and wanders into a socialist political rally which fills Jurgis with inspiration
through a speech. He finds a job as a porter at a socialist run hotel and later reunites with wife.
This story is filled with signs of corruption and immorality. A big symbol in this story was the
animals and slaughterhouses of Packingtown which represent the working class. Just like the
animals were killed with impunity, made to suffer and had no choice about their fate, so were

Bunch And Athlete As Agent Of Change
The concept of athletics is based primarily on a single prospect; that those who are the best, greater
than the great, will receive widespread attention and fame, and will also be marked as role models.
Any individual who aspires to be something similar to these renown athletes will mindfully watch
the athletes every move, and chances are, they will become emotionally attached to that person s
opinion and thoughts. But sometimes these situations become somewhat tense, for both the all time

mentally in the affairs of others. Although soldiers have been put through extreme ordeals in
combat throughout militaryhistory, the ordinary soldier continues to fight for his sense of duty to
his country, his belief in the cause, and his comrades in arms; furthermore, these reasons
transformed throughout the centuries, as a result of influences such as military, political, and
societal.
Even though soldiers are constantly exposed to extreme trauma and ordeal, they still fight for a
sense of duty to their state. For example, French troops during the French Revolution fought for
their sense of duty to the establishment of a free France. This feeling of responsibility to the state

as free men to defend freedom (79). Also, a sense of duty to the state can be seen in ordinary
French soldiers

The Origins Of Piracy In The 17th Century The origins of modern piracy can be traced back to the 17th century when European states began to commercially compete for trade routes via the high seas to exploit new markets for trade and resources. At the time oceans, lacked any regulation, law, and order. Countries such as England, France, and Spain hired pirate groups to attack enemy ships and steal materials that were found on board. • 5. The Pursuit Of Happiness In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott... Throughout the year, I have learned multiple things and gained a whole new perspective about the pursuit of happiness from our exploration of American Literature this year. From every piece of literature we read, the overall goal was to have someone pursue their happiness in their own way. I learned that someone s happinessmight be different than another person s happiness and that s okay. Each individual has their own dreams and goals, but overall, everyone has one goal in mind. That is to achieve happiness in their life. One piece of literature that is a prime example of the pursuit of happiness is The Great Gatsby. Throughout the novel, many of the characters were trying to pursue happiness. Jay Gatsby, for example, was trying to win Daisy over again. He wanted to recreate the past when he was happily in love with her. Gatsby went to great lengths to interest Daisy and grab her attention. Gatsby was in love, but the only way he could be truly happy is if he had Daisy to himself. Gatsby threw elaborate parties at his mansion that he built all for Daisy. • 6. Analysis Of The Movie Phoenix Jackson When using symbolism, objects or even people can be used to represent your answer or explanation. For example, Uncle Sam (U.S) was a symbol for the United States when they were going to war, and they put up the famous poster of Uncle Sam pointing his finger at you with the slogan on the bottom of the poster that says I want you! Food can also be used as a symbol. For example, fried chicken, hot dogs, and hamburgers are foods commonly consumed in America, while in other countries, they probably haven t even heard about hamburgers, because we are all accustomed to what we eat. In the beginning of the short story, Phoenix Jackson is introduced as an elderly woman making her way in the woods talking to herself and saying no one is going to stop her from making her journey. First, she gets stuck in a thorn bush, but gets out of it. Then she has to cross a creek on a log, but because of her age, something bad could happen, so she closed her eyes and crossed. She sat near a tree to rest, and began to daydream of a little boy giving her a slice of marble cake, which she gladly accepts, but when she tried to take it, she was just waving her hand in the air. She sees a Scarecrow, who she mistakenly takes it as a man, and then a ghost, and starts to dance with it. She keeps walking, when a black dog came at her a little and knocked her over, and fell into a ditch. A white man sees her and helps her up, but when phoenix sees a ... • 7. Reinhold Niebhur s Views On Original Sin Reinhold Niebhur s views on Original sin fall in line with my own actually; I do believe that man is inherently evil with power to do good. As much of a blessing that free will is, I believe it to also be a curse because nothing good comes free. With the freedom to make our decisions comes the responsibilty to not only know but also to understand the effects of them. Every action has a reaction, and sin is the reaction to free will. Niebuhr holds that man is responsible for his unintentional sins, even if there was no malice. Niebuhr argues through Pauline teachings that sin is essential; especially with man s tendency for self glorification. Pauline teachings indicate that human sin is an inevitable defect derived from the sin of the first man .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is easily seen because humans are faulty beings, who often fall into error even with good intentions. Our faulty minds and free will can easily fll prey deception and misinterpretation of what we think we saw with ignorance and imagination filling the gaps, and no matter what level of mental fortitude, sense of morality, or innate holiness man possesses. Man still falls subject to deception. If our minds, which are factors in our free will, can be subjected to manipulation, it is not bizarre to claim that man sins unintentionally and is responsible to correct its actions. Man s biggest flaw is its weakness in the face of temptation because temptation also lies in its heart. Man s free will is inherently corrupted by the temptations of life and the world. While free will pushed man s creativity to what seems to be a limitless boundary, it has also played a part in man s own undoing. Man s undoing lies in their ego and desire for self gratification and self glorification. They constantly strive to expand their presence and knowledge so much so that it seems to know no bounds. • 8. Descartes First Meditations By Rene Descartes In RenГ© Descartes First Meditations, he introduces three main sceptical arguments for the possibility of doubt: illusion, dreaming and error. Descartes purpose in his First Meditations is to define knowledge by placing doubt on the sceptical arguments capacity to provide truth. In this essay, I will focus on the argumentfrom dreaming. There are many objections against the argument; therefore I will assess the soundness of the argument and whether it establishes universal doubt based on the plausibility of the objections. Moreover, I will further conclude that it is possible to know if we are dreaming or not at any given moment and that we are not always in a dream. The argument of dreaming The principle premise of the argument from dreaming is that there are no sure signs by means of which being awake can be distinguished from being asleep. This leads to the premise that one often feels sensations and perceptions similarly to when one is awake. Then, it is possible that we do not know if we are dreaming right now or not. This is a valid argument which attacks all sense perception and allows us to doubt even the most ordinary and certain things, as you may be dreaming them rather than actually experiencing it. Objections to the argument Descartes hypothesizes that we cannot distinguish the state of being in a dream and being awake. As a result, he concludes that our sensory perception is unreliable, and we should strip down our judgement through sensory perception and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The concept of resilience is closely associated with risk and suggests that at risk children and families are more likely to develop an adverse outcome or disorder than others, which includes poverty, unemployment, homelessness, poor health, single parenting and divorce, organisational, social, cohort and family line diversity. Given the conceptual complexities of resilience, it is important to take stock of the individual factors, family dynamics e.g. step families, adoption, fostering and environmental difficulties such as war, drought, cultural beliefs, which resilience develops. Such a conceptual framework is likely to provide a useful yet multidimensional conceptualisation of resilience. Focusing on these individual, familial, and environmental risk and protective factors, their influence on the landscape of reunification and re entry opens new avenues for exploration, which lead to more effective interventions for children and families (Rapoprt Rapoprot, 1982). Although protective and risk have often been used interchangeably in the literature, Rutter (1999) sees resilience as the attribute that characterise and structuralise the conceptual framework of protective perspective. The protective perspective emphasises the resources, assets, potentials, and capabilities of children, groups, families, and communities (Bernards, 1997). This approach also marks a definitive ... The story Dante s Inferno is about a man s journey through hell. The main character, Dante, has just been exiled from his home and is now trying to find the right road. The significance of the beginning is the religious aspect of Dante s adventure of leaving to another realm. In my opinion, the straight way is through faith in God. Railroads cut rates on longer distances and raised them on shorter trips. They claimed that rebating was generating the profit which enabled them to stay afloat. Farmers were sometimes hit with the realization that railroads had the power to put them out of business with freight rates being raised only a few cents, [Document H]. Till this day, Cho s access to firearm and Virginia Tech s security hazard remains to be controversial. The motive and cause of Cho s action and what the school could have done in order to prevent this tragic incident will be addressed. The incident occurred on Monday, April 16th 2007. Imagine a future utopia of our species: A global community of humanity, which will have overcome the disunity of its primitive origin. A united human race, without boundaries dividing it against itself, living harmoniously with itself and with all Nature. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An enlightened and benevolent anarchism, such as expressed by the terms, anarcho pacifism / anarcho socialism, is, in my view, the only anarchism that can ever work. To arrive at an anarcho pacifist / anarcho socialist society, we as a global community must undergo great psychological transformation. Only then can anarchism become a practical ideology for the world. However, we as individuals need not wait for all humanity to find anarchy before we can have anarchy for ourselves. We can manifest anarchy within our own circles of being, individually, here and now; thus becoming individually liberated. The anarchist truly has the best political deal. Whereas the fascist depends upon a fascist government to have fascism, the state socialist upon a socialistic government to have socialism, the democrat upon a democratic government to have democracy, and the libertarian capitalist upon a libertarian government to have laissez faire capitalism, the anarchist can choose to have anarchy, here and now, without any government. Anarchy, the way I see it, is a personal choice, depending on nothing but one s own true will. If one wants anarchy for oneself, one can have it, regardless of the political system society has. All the anarchist needs to do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Australopithecus Afarensis, and Australopithecus Africanus... The phylogeny started off with Proconsul heseloni as the common ancestor to Sivapithecus indicus, Australopithecus afarensis, and Australopithecus Africanus. The reasoning for this was from the approximated age of Proconsul heseloni of 23 million years ago. This places Sivapithecus indicus roughly 15 million years after, suggesting that Sivapithecus indicus directly evolved from Proconsul heseloni. From Proconsul heseloni, it was decided that three species evolved from it. These species included A. A. afarensis, A. africanus and Sivapithecus indicus. Sivapithecus indicus was branched off the early human evolutionary line as the characteristics from the dentation and skull characteristics differed from that of A. afarensis and A. africanus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This difference can be used to infer that they lived in different areas of the world as it can be assumed that the diets of the two were unalike, explaining the dissimilarity of the canine size. As it is inferred that the two species lived in different regions of the world, it can be assumed that they co existed at the same time period. Homo habilis followed A. africanus indicating that A. africanus was a direct ancestor of H. habilis. The reasoning for this included the brain weight and body weight of the H. habilis slightly increased from that of A. africanus. As there was a general increase the overall brain to body weight ratio, indicating that there was an increase in the overall body weight of the two. Homo erectus was branched off after H. habilis as the justification for this was from the muzzle angles of the different species. As H. erectus had a muzzle angle of 107В° it was decided that it was reasonable to assume that H. erectus evolved from H. habilis. However, in the overall positioning of the phylogeny, it was placed on a side branch off H. habilis. This reasoning for this was that if H. erectus was placed on the main evolutionary line to evolve from H. ergaster, the muzzle angles from H. ergaster, H. erectus, and Homo neaderthalensis would increase then decrease. It would not be logical to place H. erectus on the main evolutionary line. Further justification that H. erectus was not a direct ancestor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Ethicality Of Human Experimentation Human experimentation has always been a highly controversial topic and practice. It deals with the use of human subjects taking part in tests for usually scientific and/or medical purposes. These tests are done for the end goal of furthering knowledge in certain scientific fields. While it does have its benefits, it has an immense negative stigma attached to it, and for understandable reasons. In 1896, a man by the name of Arthur Wentworth performed an operation on 29 children at a Boston hospital to see if the procedure itself was harmful. His efforts were noted as being virtually non therapeutic and were given the label of vivisection, which is now a modern, general term for live experimentation. This however was not the origin of humanexperimentation.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the earliest instances of human experimentation include 1st century s Cleopatra. During her reign, she tested a belief at the time that concluded it only took 40 days to fully develop a male fetus and 80 days for a female to fully develop. This was tested by ordering her handmaids to be inseminated and their wombs cut open during different gestational phases while they were under a government death sentencing order. An early practice to examine the workings of the human body indeed, but it is not by far the only one. Two surgeons from the 3rd century of Alexandria by the names of Herophilus and Erasistratus frequently practiced human experimentation on live convicted criminals. They were particularly interested in discovering more of the human anatomy and how it works. Their methods would be considered far too extreme today, as would many cultures in ancient ... Water was the negative control and it stayed blue which was the color of the Benedict s reagent (Benedicts test image 1). This supports the hypothesis that monosaccharaides contain aldehyde groups. Three disaccharides, maltose, sucroseand lactose were tested next for a free aldehyde group, which would mean they were reducing sugars according to the hypothesis. • 36. John Keats s Ode To A Nightingale And Romantic Expressivism Christopher Bell September 24, 2017 ENGL 204 Dr. Callis John Keats s Ode to a Nightingale and Romantic Expressivism John Keats s Ode to a Nightingale is one of the most recognized and studied pieces of poetry from the 19th century, with the critic Allen Tate even going on to say that this ode at least tries to say everything that a poet can say (Vendler). Keats was an educated writer and knew very well what he was talking about and was able to do amazing things with a simple string of words. Keats s piece is written in the time of Romantic Expressivism and every word that he writes inside of Ode to a Nightingale accurately portrays the themes and concepts of this time period briefness of our time on earth, mortality, a different and sometimes confusing look at the world around us (whether through our own eyes or some force on us), nature and all of its beauty, and the words that contain the strength to transport the reader to another place or time. In order to understand Keats s Ode to a Nightingale and how it connects to Romantic Expressivism, we first need to understand what Romantic Expressivism is and how it was created. The last major poet to write in the 18th Century was Alexander Pope. He believed over was built into the universe inside of the great chain of being. He believed there was a natural order stretching down from God and the angels to the lowest form of life on earth. After him, writers, such as Keats, came along to question this thought and ... Thomas University of Phoenix PSYCH 560/ Cognitive Psychology Dr. Kristi Collins Johns 15th August 2010 Language and Memory Paper Introduction Language is important to the way we communicate. Semantic memory is acquired over the years and is vital to language. Language becomes second nature when we already know what, when and how to say something. We form sentences, phrases, paragraphs by planning what we say and how we will say it. Most people believe that when we speak, it is without thought and is done unconsciously. However, in this paper I will seek to explain the relationship between semantic memory and language production. Explain the nature and function of semantic memory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For every action, there is a reason for it. We have to appreciate our cognitive processes and continuing to understand how they work and what goes into making them work is so rewarding. Analyze the basic functions of language Pinker (1994c) esteems language as the jewel in the crown of cognition. Language serves the purpose of communicating or revealing our cognitive processes. The beautiful thing about language is that it is one of most complex and valuable aspect of cognition (Robinson Riegler amp; Robinson Riegler, 2008). Babies are able to learn language and sometime understand the language before they can speak it. There are different types of languages: sign language, English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Braille. All of these are ways that people communicate with one another depending on their culture and mental/physical circumstances (deaf, blind). One characteristic of language is that everything we refer to is symbolized by a word. The way we put words in a sentence and combine them to make sense, would conclude that we have a basic understanding of what role words play in a sentence (noun, verb, pronoun). We would not know this if not through language. Through language we are able to speak, write, read and understand. As Robinson Riegler (2008) brings out, all the words a person knows comprise their mental lexicon and is a part of our semantic memory. When we talk about language, we also should ... After all, if you are growing green things, it should be an eco friendly practice by default, shouldn t it? Unfortunately, mostly for the sake of modern convenience, there are now so many chemicals tied up in gardening either to make your veggies pest free and fruitful or to make certain your flowers are weed free and extra large that we almost negate the positive ecological impact of growing plants. Fortunately, there are ways to have it all well fertilized, bug less plants, and a clear, green conscience. All you need to do is use all natural, environmentally sound products for your lawn and garden. The first product you want to check out is a little thing called diatomaceous earth. Frankly, it has so many benefits, it is almost like cheating. It is both a pest control agent and a growth medium, and it retains water and nutrients, while assisting with drainage. The primary drawbacks are the potential for harm to helpful insects and the dangers of inhalation, depending on which type you buy (though these are no different than the risks with chemical insecticides). If you visit your local nursery or big box home improvement store, they should be able to help you find some easily. However, even though the ordinary soldier continues to fight and to carry out his orders, he is put through some of the hardest traumas and hardships that the world has ever seen or known.
