In large cities, there are lots of homeless. People with pleas for help, but almost never receive. How
could so many passersby not help them? In the poem Musée des Beaux Arts , Auden argues that
humans lack empathy for strangers. He uses examples of people acquiescing to others suffering to
support his point. Auden complements those examples with a variety of literary methods to make
allowing other to suffer seem natural, and be persuasive. Auden uses various persuasive elements
throughout Musée des Beaux Arts to convince the reader that people do not empathize with strangers.
His main tools are the literary devices of irony, enjambment, and rhyme.
Auden primarily uses irony to prove that humans have no empathy for strangers. For example, at the
end of the first stanza, he writes, . . . the torturer s horse/ scratches its innocent behind on a tree (12
13). The torturer s horse is indifferent to what his master is doing, which enables him to remain
innocent. The irony that a torturer s horse is innocent conveys that if one ignores others suffering, one
could remain happy in a cruel world. Irony puts extra emphasis on these lines and Auden demonstrates
that this belief is central to his argument. The way that it is introduced also adds to the efficacy of
persuasion. By making a simple analogy, he demonstrates his faith in his belief. Confidence makes for
a more convincing argument, so Auden makes his poem even more persuasive. Additionally, the
simplicity makes the conclusion come logically to most people. To add on to his logos, in the next
stanza he says, Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,/ [The ship] Had somewhere to get to
and sailed calmly on (20 21). Auden alludes to the painting The Fall of Icarus which depicts Icarus s
death in the sea. In this painting, nothing acknowledges his death. The connection here demonstrates
that while this event may initially appear to be tragic, but Icarus is insignificant in the grand scheme of
things. On the other hand, Amazing has a very positive connotation and contrasts with the general

lawful or moral standard. In Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies, guilt was a major theme and was
essential throughout the novel. Davies used the three main characters, Dunstan Ramsay, Boy Staunton,
and Paul Dempster to illustrate the different effects of Mrs. Dempster s incident. The way one is
raised, the key disciplines they have developed and their way of thinking reflects how they deal with

2. Best Post Analysis (2 points) I feel that post is my best post because I think I did a good job in
picking an interesting article and explaining how the article I picked is relevant and relatable to Week
7 s topic/lecture about US film industry, particularly Contemporary Hollywood. Although some of the
stuff the article points out are quite obvious, as part of the target audience of the film industry, we (I)
do not usually pay much attention to the smaller subtle things. For example, how the supporting cast is
becoming more and more diverse or how as the storylines of blockbuster films are becoming less
sophisticated, appealing to such a diverse audience as the global audience is actually very challenging.
Aside from grammar, I feel like I need to expand more about how and why I think the article is
relevant to the topic of the week. Because I did not want my post to be too long, I omitted some
interesting points I found in the article. I plan to add them in my revision post because they reinforce
the fact Contemporary Hollywood is transforming into Global Hollywood. 3. Rewritten Best Posting

Indirect Characterization In Simon Elkeles Rules Of...
We get to know people in many different ways. Whether it s through their words, deeds appearance, or
reputation, we are acquainted to others through indirect characterization. In Rules of Attraction, by
Simon Elkeles, the author uses indirect characterization to reveal the main character s personality. The
protagonist, Carlos Fuentes, is shown to be cultural, arrogant, and obnoxious, but has a hidden kind
side. The reader is shown that Carlos stays true to his Mexican culture through various types of
indirect characterization. At the beginning of the story, Carlos introduces himself to others by saying,

These particular traits are shown through one main method of indirect characterization, the thoughts
and words of others. Elkeles shows one of Carlos s negative traits by giving the reader a peek into a
secondary character s mind, He [Carlos] is so obnoxious. (p.33). Here it is made obvious that, in
addition to other traits, Carlos is blatantly obnoxious and rude through indirect characterization.
However, later in the story, the same character says to Carlos, You pretty much succeed in being a jerk
most of time, but you ve got potential. (Elkeles p.144). Again, the author used indirect
characterization, specifically the words of other characters, to show Carlos s personality. Rather than
exposing the unpleasant nature of Carlos s character, this time Elkeles displays the likability of it..
This likability is further enforced in a secondary character s thoughts near the end of the book, When
he [Carlos] played soccer with my brother, and I saw a glimpse of generosity that he only gifts to the
few he thinks are worthy, I knew that what you see isn t necessarily what you get when it comes to
Carlos. (Elkeles p.225). Elkeles, by using indirect characterization once more, makes the sweet kind

Saint Augustine of Hippo once stated, The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one
page. It was after stumbling across this statement that I was influenced to call up my friend and
suggest a road trip.
When we started off, it was a beautiful day. The bright morning sun peeked over the Appalachian
mountains to bid us farewell as we packed our belongings into the 2011 Chevy Cruze. Dew still
perched on the delicate leaves of various summer flowers while we rode down the road towards
Tennessee.
My friend Sarah drove. Her fingers tapped the steering wheel in rhythm to the Carrie Underwood song
blaring from the radio. It was the radio s job to keep us awake since we had left so early in the
morning; however, it was not doing a good job as I fell asleep only twenty minutes into the ride. Sarah
had to wake me up at the rest stop just outside of Roanoke, Virginia.
Hey, Allyson, she called as she shook my shoulders, it would be nice if you woke up, so I could take a
nap.
I just mumbled an incoherent string of words in response.

The Waiting Room Reeked Of Diseases And Exhaustion
The waiting room reeked of diseases and exhaustion. I have been waiting for the last two hours as I
watched the overhead clock turn 10:30pm. The room was still packed with patients and crying babies.
As I sat there waiting, I started to notice how each patient s face would slightly relax after walking out
of the doctor s room. As six years old, I knew that it was not possible for everyone to receive good
news after seeing a doctor, but somehow each patient had a relief look with a hint of hope in each of
their faces. There had to be more to medicine than just prescribing pills.
As I became older, I started to understand that medicine embodies many roles that I wish to fulfill:
scientist, artist, and communicator.
These roles might not seem directly related to medicine, but these are the things that initially ignited
my passion for medicine and continues to strengthen my dream of becoming a physician by each
passing day.
In the first day of art class in 2nd grade my teacher told the class Don t just draw a picture but create a
harmonious relationship using each element available to you. These words resonate with me in various
aspects of life. In art when asked to draw a simple ball, you do not just draw a circle. However, you
use that as a starting point and make the image more meaningful by adding texture, shadow, space and
color. In order to make any experience meaningful, we have to start from the core and slowly build a
relationship.
