An ecosystem is made up of living and non-living things that interact within a shared climate, soil and precipitation. Ecosystems can vary in size from a small body of water to a large desert or ocean. For an ecosystem to function properly, all parts must work together to provide a livable environment as the failure of one element, such as a lack of water, can cause plants and animals to die off. Ecosystems include producers like plants that make their own food, consumers that eat other organisms, and decomposers that break down dead materials. Within an ecosystem are populations of organisms that live together and communities of different populations that interact.
