Ecosystems
What is a habitat ?
A habitat is the place where living things live.

Habitats are different and have different
characteristics: temperature, soil, sunlight,
water…
The habitat provides the animal or plant with
food, water, space and shelter.
Ecosystems
An ecosystem is a habitat and all the living
things that live in it.

Animals and plants

 Most plants and animals are specially
adapted to survive in a particular
  habitat.
 They have developed special
  features
 This is called adaption.
Some examples of
   adaption
All birds have similar characteristics.
But many water birds have features that are
different from those birds that live on land.

                   Long legs and beak
Webbed feet for
  swimming
These wings act as flippers
Aquatic animals
have adapted
bodies to move
more easliy in the
water
These animals are
adapted to live in the
hot desert.
Camels store water in their
humps.
Ostriches have
long eyelashes to
keep out the
sand.
These animals are
    adapted to live in
    cold temperatures.

.
Even plants have adapted to their
habitats.
The cactus has fleshy stems
that store water.
Dandelions seeds are easily
dispersed.

ARCTIC
ARCTIC
The ARCTIC has:

•Plants and trees: TUNDRA
•Polar bears
•A lot of terrestrial mammals…

                         TUNDRA
The ANTARCTICA has:

•No plants or trees
•Penguins
•No terrestrial mammals
DESERTS
DESERTS are:
•Very hot during the day
•Very cold at night
•Very dry
•We can find:
  • some plants like cactus that store
     water
  • Some animals like camels
MEDITERRANEAN FORESTS

•Have mild temperatures

•There is little rainfall during the summer

•There are many trees

•There are many animals: eagles, rabbits, insects…
MEDITERRANEAN FORESTS
JUNGLES:

•Are warm
•Rainfall is high all year
•Great variety of animals
