Earth is known as the 'blue planet' because 71% of its surface is covered in water, most of which (97%) is in the oceans. The remaining 3% of Earth's water is found in various forms - as ice caps and glaciers, water vapor in the atmosphere, groundwater underground, and freshwater in lakes, rivers and streams. Water is constantly being recycled and cleaned through the global water cycle as it changes between liquid, solid and gas states in the atmosphere and on the Earth's surface and subsurface.
