Originally presented at Digital Summit Dallas in Dec 2014, this deck details how lessons from Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do philosophy can be applied in UX design... and in life. Based on the Uxmag.com article I wrote of the same name.
The baseline is shifting. Users are more tech savvy than ever, and what worked for many users even two years ago will not work. In this panel Joseph Dickerson, User Experience Lead for Microsoft, discussed the different engagement models that have emerged or are emerging.
Wearables, Internet of Things, responsive web apps, social media… what communication channels should you support, and why? And what will the future bring? This presentation will help you understand some of the implications of the new experiences that are emerging and how they deliver information.
Designer vs Developer - A Battle Royal v1.0Nicole Maynard
SharePoint Fest Chicago 2013 - Can designers and developers work together to create a frictionless solution? Often times barriers exist between designers and developers. Let's look at what UX really is, not hearsay and learn some interesting ways devs can help. And bring peace to this historical battle field, by showing the two factions can work together amicably when supported by a well-defined process. Content covered will center around web, desktop, mobile, and yes a little bit of SharePoint. Discussion topics will include a brief history of user experience (UX) design, a "concept to deliverable" process involving designers and developers, and finally a short demo highlighting covered concepts.
This is a simple deck I put together to explain the components I believe are needed to create the best User Experience. This is also to help clarify what UX does and the sub-disaplines needed for the best result.
6 rules of design. It focus on design principles which should be used by new designers or UX novices. The ppt is designed to keep audience engaged during presentation and entertain them else they will sleep :)

Know Thy User: The Missing Element in SharePoint Solutions (User Centered Des...Marcy Kellar
You want the most out of your investment in SharePoint – a highly adopted, effective and easy-to-use solution. Achieving these objectives requires more than technical skills and knowledge of the inner-workings of SharePoint features – it requires an understanding of user problems and goals as well as a process that keeps the user at the center of the lifecycle. If you are like many organizations implementing SharePoint, you are using “surrogates” to represent user requirements, collecting inadequate user information and not engaging users later in the design and development process. If this sounds familiar, you may be headed toward a costly redesign.
This session defines both User Centered Design (UCD) and User Experience (UX) concepts and provides tangible methods that incorporate users into your process without compromising business goals.

UXPA 2023: UX Fracking: Using Mixed Methods to Extract Hidden InsightsUXPA International
Users do not always accurately describe what they mean or feel. There are many reasons for this, ranging from politeness to poor introspection, to lack of sufficient technical vocabulary. Fortunately, UX researchers have tools in their trade to deduce what was really meant. We call this UX Fracking, a mixed methods approach that is optimized for extracting hidden user insights. We will illustrate the dangers of inadequate, superficial research, and how this may lead to outcomes incapable of addressing the users’ core issues. We will explore ways to avoid these pitfalls by leveraging mixed research methods to test hypotheses about the users’ intent and needs. This starts with a thorough understanding of who the user is, their goals, and how they work today, to an approach that combines surveys, interviews, and comment analysis with behavioral observation, and finally, validating the newly discovered user insights with the users themselves.

Theo Mandel - "Designing Object-Oriented User Experiences" IUE2013 ConferenceTheo Mandel, PhD
Theo Mandel, Ph.D. was invited to give this presentation at the IUE 2013 conference, Phoenix, AZ on April 3, 2013.
Object-oriented design is a critical skill for today's user experience designers.
"Designing Object-Oriented User Experiences" is a new presentation based on 20 years of research and experience in object-oriented user interface design. Mandel was part of the IBM Common User Access (CUA) team that designed the object-oriented OS/2 operating system interface. The IBM team wrote and published the first industry object-oriented design guide, titled "Object-Oriented Interface Design: IBM Common User Access Guidelines" (Que, 1992).
OOUIs are described in Mandel's well-known book, "The Elements of User Interface Design" (John Wiley & Sons, 1997). The presentation describes the history of OOUIs, what is isn't, what it is, design models and the OO UX process. Resources are provided.

User Experience Design + Agile: The Good, The Bad, and the UglyJoshua Randall
There's a rumor going around that user experience design (UXD) and Agile don't play well together. In this talk, I'll explain that they do -- most of the time! Learn about the historical reasons for why these two disciplines sometimes butt heads, as well as the good/bad/ugly of various approaches to integrating design and development.
Although User Experience (UX) is typically associated with websites, apps, and other digital technologies, its user-centered philosophy is applicable to every library service and touchpoint, including reference and information services. In this talk, attendees will be introduced to key UX concepts and methods and get an overview of recent research into UX Librarianship and the extent to which these roles can help - or hinder - libraries' efforts to deliver compelling and engaging experiences through every channel, not just those offered through a screen. By the end of the talk, attendees will have a deeper understanding of the strategies and the mindset required to create an experience-centered library whose digital and physical services work together to create and sustain meaningful relationships with its users. Presented at the 2016 Western New York Library Resources Council (WNYLRC) Annual Conference.
UX is not a bolt-on but many agencies and founders approach it as the icing on the cake where really it is the cake itself. If you are in the process of planning, creating or improving your MVP this presentation will help you understand what UX is and how to go about making it happen for your product. The presentation will also help you understand how the UX process should happen correctly in your organisation and advises on different heuristics and models that can aid your team to ensure your product is produced correctly. The keynote was presented to the Founders Nation boot-camp by Danny Bluestone from Cyber-Duck at The Wayra Academy,Capper Street, WC1E 6JA London during March 2014.
An introduction to UX - User Experience.
Where does UX come from, what are the benefits of using it, and how can it be applied to day to day agency work?
Understanding the User Centred Design process and how UX is an integral part of every piece of digital work that is produced.
Will we ever have a "cashless" society, like in Star Trek. In this panel (originally created for the official Star Trek convention) writer and technologist Joseph Dickerson discusses the possibility and how the economics of Trek works.
What Star Trek character are you the most like? And what character could you NEVER work with? In this presentation, writer Joseph Dickerson discuses how the DiSC personality profile system can be used to understand what Trek character aligns best with your personality. He’ll also provide insights on how you can use this information to work with people more effectively!
In this study, Joseph Dickerson, User Experience Architect at Fortune 500 company Fiserv, details how users engage with their mobile devices everyday and discusses representative personas that reflect this usage.
In this presentation Joseph Dickerson, UX Architect for Fortune 500 Company Fiserv, discusses best practices in UX design for mobile with some practical examples and approaches. Topics covered:
- How to do mobile ethnographic research, to understand mobile personas and usage patterns
- Designing for the "immediacy of now", "ego-centric design" and for context of use
- Designing for device constraints
- Mobile usability testing and documentation

6. So, what does Bruce Lee have to do
with UX Design? Quite a lot…
But first, let’s define our terms.
7.
8. What is UX?
User experience (UX or UE) involves a person’s emotions about using a
particular product, system or service. User experience highlights the
experiential, affective, meaningful and valuable aspects of human-computer
interaction and product ownership. Additionally, it includes a person’s
perceptions of the practical aspects such as utility, ease of use and efficiency
of the system. User experience is subjective in nature because it is about
individual perception and thought with respect to the system. User experience
is dynamic as it is constantly modified over time due to changing
circumstances and new innovations
9.
10. What is UX?
ISO 9241-210[1] defines user experience as:
“A person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use or
anticipated use of a product, system or service.”
11. “I invented the term ‘user experience’ because I
thought human interface and usability were too
narrow. I wanted to cover all aspects of the
person’s experience with the system including
industrial design, graphics, the interface, the
physical interaction, and the manual.”
- Don Norman
25. “Awareness is without choice,
without demand, without anxiety; In
that state of mind, there is
perception.”
26. Be aware of context and
surroundings - thinking about where
and how people use technology
Designing without awareness is
awareness is designing the dark
27.
28.
29. “If your cup is full, you cannot fill it.
So first, empty your cup.”
30. While there are standard patterns
and best practices, every design
project is different
Step away from your
preconceptions, and engage with an
open mind
31.
32. Follow a proper design process, but
don’t be dogmatic about it
Be flexible, and approach each
design project within the confines
that exist
34. Usability testing is a key part of user
experience design - Failure will
happen
Understand what “good” failure is
35. "Those who are unaware they are
walking in darkness will never seek
the light."
36. Users are not designers - when you
ask them "what do you want it to
do?" they often look at you like you
have a third eye
Users can't see outside of
themselves
37.
38. “Know the difference between a
catastrophe and an inconvenience. To
realize that it’s just an inconvenience, that
it is not a catastrophe, but just an
unpleasantness, is part of coming into your
own, part of waking up.”
39. We must be aware of the specific design
problems we are solving, and focus our
energies appropriately
Spend the right time working on the right
problem, and try to identify the core things
that need solving: The “catastrophes”
How people use technology is important - Delta redesigned their screens at their gates it's an improvement - but they didn't think about context. The font is too small on some screens
Bruce Lee often told students that if they already thought they “knew” everything, they should leave his class.
I have a colleague who thinks that an extensive two-month ethnographic study should occur before ANY design is done. In business environments this is often a rare luxury, and he is frustrated much of the time because he is rigid in this belief. Taking such a dogmatic stand is affecting both his professional reputation and costing him opportunities. Don’t be intransigent—be flexible. Be like water.
