Unit -1 (Measurement )
1. What is measurement
2. Need of measurement in engineering and science.
3. Physical quantities
4. Types of physical quantities.
5. Unit of physical quantities
6. Characteristics of a standard unit.
7. Requirements of standard.
Measurement in daily life
What is measurement
• Measurement : The measurement means the action of measuring
something is defined as the process of determining the value of an
unknown quantity by comparing it with some pre defined standard.
Need of measurement in engineering and science.
What is the distance of the sun from the earth
What is the speed of light
what is the mass of electron
• To understand any phenomenon in physics we have to perform
experiments.
• Experiments require measurements, and we measure several physical
properties like length, mass, time, temperature, pressure etc.
• Experimental verification of laws & theories also needs measurement of
physical properties
Physical quantity
Physical Quantity A physical property that can be measured and
described by a number is called physical quantity.
• Examples:
• Mass of a person is 65 kg.
• Length of a table is 3 m.
• Area of a hall is 100 m2.
• Temperature of a room is 300 K
Types of physical quantity
• Fundamental quantities : The physical units which can neither be
derived from one another nor they can be further resolved into more
simpler units are called fundamental units .
or
• There are certain physical quantities that cannot be explained in
terms of other physical quantities . They are called fundamental
quantities.it is also called S.I units .
Derived unit
• Derived unit : All the other physical units which can be expressed in
terms of the fundamental units are called derived units .
let us consider :
distance m
Speed = ---------------- = -------- = ms-1
time s
velocity ms-1
Acceleration = ------------------ = ------------ = ms-2
time s
force = mass * acceleration
= kg * ms-2
= newton (N)
Unit of physical quantity
• The standard unit of measurement is defined as a unit of
measurement which have a fixed value that does not change from
place to place and person to person .
“ A Physical quantity can be expressed as the combination of a
numerical value and a unit “
1
n ∝ -------
u
Unit of measurement
• Examples:
• metre , foot, inch for length
• kilogram, pound for mass
• second, minute, hour for time
• Fahrenheit , kelvin for temperature
• Mass
5 kg
5000 gram
5000000 milligram
Hours
1 hour
60 min
3600 second
Characteristics of a standard unit
• A unit must be well defined .
• It must be highly precise.
• It must be easily reproducible
• A unit should remain unaltered irrespective of place , time and
physical conditions.
• it should be easily comparable with other similar units .
Requirement of a standard unit
• A standard unit should be correct . The basic requirement of the unit
is to measure the correct parameter of different physical quantities .
Thus, it should be correct.
• A good unit should be clear , precise and simple .
• A good unit should be testable because all the physical concepts are
based on experiments .
• A good unit should be practically available.
Summary:
1. What is measurement
2. Need of measurement in engineering and science.
3. Physical quantities
4. Types of physical quantities.
5. Unit of physical quantities
6. Characteristics of a standard unit.
7. Requirements of standard
Assignment questions
• Q1 . Write the relation between numerical value of a quantity and the
size of the unit .(length , mass and time)
• Q2 what is physical unit?
• Q3 what are the 7 basic units of measurement?
• Q4 Is measurement important in our daily life?
• Q5 which is meant by derived quantity?
• Q6 derived formulas in terms of fundamental unit
• VOLUME, AREA,DENSITY, ENERGY, VELOCITY, WORK, POWER
NEXT TOPIC : MODULE 2 (MEASUREMENT)
1. SYSTEM OF UNIT
2. CONVENTION OF UNIT

  • 16. Derived unit • Derived unit : All the other physical units which can be expressed in terms of the fundamental units are called derived units . let us consider : distance m Speed = ---------------- = -------- = ms-1 time s
  • 17. velocity ms-1 Acceleration = ------------------ = ------------ = ms-2 time s force = mass * acceleration = kg * ms-2 = newton (N)

  • 19. Unit of physical quantity • The standard unit of measurement is defined as a unit of measurement which have a fixed value that does not change from place to place and person to person . “ A Physical quantity can be expressed as the combination of a numerical value and a unit “ 1 n ∝ ------- u
  • 20. Unit of measurement • Examples: • metre , foot, inch for length • kilogram, pound for mass • second, minute, hour for time • Fahrenheit , kelvin for temperature
  • 21. • Mass 5 kg 5000 gram 5000000 milligram Hours 1 hour 60 min 3600 second
  • 22. Characteristics of a standard unit • A unit must be well defined . • It must be highly precise. • It must be easily reproducible • A unit should remain unaltered irrespective of place , time and physical conditions. • it should be easily comparable with other similar units .
  • 23. Requirement of a standard unit • A standard unit should be correct . The basic requirement of the unit is to measure the correct parameter of different physical quantities . Thus, it should be correct. • A good unit should be clear , precise and simple . • A good unit should be testable because all the physical concepts are based on experiments . • A good unit should be practically available.
