Concept of Particles and Free Body Diagram
Why FBD diagrams are used during the analysis?
It enables us to check the body for equilibrium.
By considering the FBD, we can clearly define the exact system of forces which we must use in the investigation of any constrained body.
It helps to identify the forces and ensures the correct use of equation of equilibrium.
Note:
Reactions on two contacting bodies are equal and opposite on account of Newton's III Law.
The type of reactions produced depends on the nature of contact between the bodies as well as that of the surfaces.
Sometimes it is necessary to consider internal free bodies such that the contacting surfaces lie within the given body. Such a free body needs to be analyzed when the body is deformable.
Physical Meaning of Equilibrium and its essence in Structural Application
The state of rest (in appropriate inertial frame) of a system particles and/or rigid bodies is called equilibrium.
A particle is said to be in equilibrium if it is in rest. A rigid body is said to be in equilibrium if the constituent particles contained on it are in equilibrium.
The rigid body in equilibrium means the body is stable.
Equilibrium means net force and net moment acting on the body is zero.
Essence in Structural Engineering
To find the unknown parameters such as reaction forces and moments induced by the body.
In Structural Engineering, the major problem is to identify the external reactions, internal forces and stresses on the body which are produced during the loading. For the identification of such parameters, we should assume a body in equilibrium. This assumption provides the necessary equations to determine the unknown parameters.
For the equilibrium body, the number of unknown parameters must be equal to number of available parameters provided by static equilibrium condition.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. UNIT: 1 Measurement
• Those physical quantities, which can neither be derived from others nor be
further resolved into simpler quantities, are called fundamental quantities.
• Length, mass, and time are the fundamental quantity. And the units of
fundamental quantities are called fundamental units or basic units.
• Those physical quantities, which depend on two or more fundamental
quantities or power of a fundamental quantity, are called derived quantities.
And the units of derived quantities are called derived units.
• For example, Area is a derived quantity. Since area= l × b, so it depends on
the power of length.

3. Standard system of Units
In Nepal, some people still use the local units like haat and mana for
measurement of length and mass. These units may vary from place to place.
So, in order to maintain the uniformity in measurement of physical
quantities, the following standard units are used:
• MKS system: In this system, mass, time, and length are measured in a
kilogram, second and meter respectively. It is also known as the metric
system.
• CGS system: In this system, length is measured in centimeter, mass in
gram and time in second.
• FPS system: In this system, length, mass, and time are measured in foot,
pound and second respectively.

4. Standard system of Units
• SI system: It is the most important system of units. It is also the improved
version of the MKS system.
• Simply put, a system of physical based on the meter, kilogram, second,
ampere, kelvin, candela, and mole, together with a set of prefixes to
indicate multiplication or division by a power of ten is known as the SI
system.
• It can be divided into two groups; fundamental unit and derived unit.
6/22/20www.yepnepal.com

5. UNIT
• A unit is defined as a convention to define an amount of physical property
in a specific system of units.
• Fundamental unit: The units of the fundamental quantities are called
fundamental unit. Those units which are independent cannot be derived
from other unit is called fundamental unit.

6. Fundamental Unit
Physical Quantity Unit Symbol
mass kilogram kg
length meter m
time second s
temperature Kelvin K
electric current ampere A
amount of matter mole mol
luminous intensity candela Cd

7. Derived Unit
• Derived units are composed of the fundamental units and are originated
from the products and ratios of the fundamental units. Derived units belong
to physical quantities that are derived from basic physical properties.
Examples are:
• Velocity – a physical quantity derived from fundamental quantities of
length and time
• velocity = distance / time = m/s
• So the units of velocity is ms-1

8. Difference between Fundamental and Derived
unit
Fundamental unit Derived unit
The units of the fundamental quantities are
called fundamental unit.
The units which are derived from the
fundamental units are called derived units.
Example: kilogram , meter, second are the
fundamental units
Example: Newton, joules are the derived
units.

1. Why do we need measurement?
2. What is unit? Write two disadvantages of traditional unit (measurement)?
3. Write any two advantages of SI system of unit?
4. Why is unit of force called derived unit?
5. Hertz is a derived unit, why?
6. Write down any two differences between MKS and SI unit.
7. Convert 500 mm into cm,m and km.
8. Express 2 hours, 10 minutes and 40 seconds into SI system.
