2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. • Target audience
• The target audience for my short film is 15+ as the film will be have material that will not be apocopate for a younger demographic
with dark themes and sustained threat witch the younger demographic might not be able to handle the peril featured in the film. I
had a debate weather the film should be a 15 or an 18 as most horror/ thriller film usually have a 15 or 18 rating. But because the
main character in the film are teenagers and the film will explore mental health in teenagers such as anxiety. Teenagers would
want to see this film to try and relate to the characters in the film so I think a 15 will be best suited for the film.
• Psychographics
• The psychographics for this film is mainly for reformers and strugglers as the film explores anxiety and power the strugglers and
reformers are about personal growth and seeking escapism.
• Genre
• The genre of my film is a hybrid of thriller and horror. I want the film to be a thriller because I want the audience to be on the edge
of their seat at all times. The film will also have horror elements to it such as low key lighting and scary music.
3. • Films are usually marketed with 2 kinds of marketing technique's.
• Traditional Marketing
• Traditional Marketing is a type of marketing technique that is mainly
associated with what people will see in their daily life's to help
promote a particular product. For example, when promoting a film
they would release a poster on a billboard or there could be a article
about it in a magazine. They can also be promoted on a TV or radio as
an advert. For example, they film “It Chapter 2” had a billboard advert
to show they audience that this film is coming soon.
4. • Viral Marketing
• Virial marketing is technique that is used to help promote a particular
product via the internet. For example, when promoting a film, use can
have a social media account such as a Facebook or Instagram page to
help promote a film. You could also have a ARG(Alternate Reality
Game) to help promote a film.
5. Purpose of a media campaign
• The purpose of a media campaign is to help promote a film to make
the audience aware of the film coming out by pulling them in to go
see it and it is effective because it will help make a bigger profit.
6. Narrative
• The follows a girl called Amy who get kidnapped by a mysterious
figure. She is taken to a a building in the middle of nowhere and she
has to find away to escape for her kidnapper before something
terrible happens to her. At the start of the film the main protagonist is
weak and when the film ends, she is stronger then she used to be as
he had to learn to fight back to survive and I think the target audience
could go to see this film for inspiration to become stronger and
defend themselves when they are going through a hard time.
7. Tagline
• The tagline for my film is “How for will you go to be free.” I created
this tag to make they audience thin about why this tagline will be
important to the story if the film. I also created this tagline to help
encourage the audience to overcome the hardships of life and to seek
freedom physically and mentally. This ties in with the hidden meaning
of my film with is about mental heath and overcoming the evil that
stops you from being free.
8. Primary research
• I handed out survey to people in my class to see where they see film
marketed and what social media sites they use the most. Most people
said that social media is the reason why they want to go see a film
and most people, said that the Social medias they use most are
Facebook or Instagram so I think creating a Facebook or an Instagram
page to be suitable as they will most likely see the film on these
pages. The majority of the people who filled in the survey have said
that the main social media sites they see film promoted is mainly on
Facebook and Instagram. So I think either creating a Factbook or
Instagram page will help me create an audience awareness of the film
I'm creating.
9. Secondary Research
I want to create a DVD cover as one of my platforms,
so I decided to look at the DVD cover for “Don’t
Breath” as the front cover only shows a girl with a
shocked expression on her face with nothing but
darkness in the background. I take influence form this
cover as I want my background of my DVD cover to be
black with the main actors face or body as the
dominant image.
10. Most theatrical posters usually have a dominant image of the protagonist or
antagonist and sometimes both of them. I want my theatrical poster to have
a dominant image of the main antagonist holding a photograph of the main
protagonist. They also may have the film slogan and who is involved in
making the film to help make the film original and make the audience aware
of who made this film.
11. My chosen platforms
• I have chosen 3 platform I want my film to be promoted by. I have
chosen a Theatrical Poster, a Facebook page, and a DVD cover. I want
to create a theatrical poster because I think it will give the audience a
better understanding of who will be in the film and what the genre
will actually be. I wanted to create a Facebook page because
Facebook is one of biggest social media sites in the world and I think
it will get a bigger audience for my film. I want to create a DVD cover
because…
12. Schedule Ideas
• I want my film to be released on October 10th because on that day, it
is mental health awareness day. I want to to be released on that day
because my film explores anxiety and the power to overcome it so it
will link together. Another reason is because my film is also a horror
film and October is the month of Halloween and Halloween is
associated with horror.
13. Planning

I created a flat plan of my
theatrical poster to help me
know where each piece of
content us going to go to help
it standout and to help me be
more prepared when creating
my poster.
14. BBFC Rating
Film Title
Dominant image
I created a flat plan for my
DVD cover to help know
witch pieces of content I
be placed and it will help
me be more prepared
when creating my DVD
cover.
15. Photos The first photo I have taken is of the main
character all ready in the abandoned
building with her looking down on the
floor. I didn’t want the main character give
direct contact on the camera or the
audience to show that she is more focused
on something else to show a sense of
mystery as it will make the audience know
why she is looking at the floor and what is
it she is looking at. I want this photograph
on my theatrical poster and DVD cover to
help create cohesion for the audience as
they will know that this will be the same
as this photo of the main protagonist
make them aware of the cohesion.
