How does your product engage
with audiences and how would
it be distributed as a real media
text?
How does my film engage with audiences?
-I mention in my first critical reflection question the genre of my film is
romantic drama, which has a convention of tragedy, it has a narrative of
high school background.
-The main character is a girl, it's about dream and reality, family issues,
and friendship problems.
-The film also involves the collision of independent women's and
traditional women's ideology, and the different generations see save
jobs and innovative and challenging jobs in different stereotypes.
Demographics characteristic of the
audience for my film:
-The graph above says that
romance is targeted at 55+
females, this is still relevant,
because the major romance
drama is targeted on 55+, but I
also targeted my audience is
aimed at 15-24 female, who
still remember the experience
from high school or have
expecting or fantasizing high
school life.
The dynamic profile of my film is :
- age 13-29 female
- unmarried
- not an orphan
- C1-B
- educated in school
- heterosexuality
- love romantic drama
Psychographic characteristic of the audience
for my film:
• - have or had been through friend issues: e.g. Experienced betrayal,
deception, and bullying by friends……
• - have or had been through family problems: e.g. Parents often quarrel,
divorced, patriarchal tendencies, do not care about your mental health,
never listen to your appeal, parents and your views are not in line,
hegemony……
• - Have a love experience or want to fall in love
• - Have regretted in youth
• - Have experienced high school life or have expectations of high school life
• - learning or used to learn an art subject, consider it as a career
Use of gratification theory
I personally think my audience is looking for
Reinforcement/Entertainment when they are
watching my film.
Form my film they can reinforce them self to the
character in the film, and get an idea form the
film of:
• How to be a romantic person
• What love looks like
• How should man and woman behave in a
relationship
• What should a teenage girl/independent
woman behave when they face one type of
problem.
Audience use media for:
Reinforcement
Information
Companionship
Entertainment
Examples of technique used in to engage with
audience:
• Foreign language voice over with a English subtitle:
I carefully consider both English and Chinese voice over, but I finally
decided to use the Chinese version the main character of the film is
not coming form a English speaking country, and the voice over is
hearing what is the main character thinking, so I think using a foreign
language will be easier for the audience to build up a 3D version of
the character. Hearing what the character is thinking made the
character more relatable and helped build a relationship between
the audience and my protagonist. Further engaging my audience.
• Editing technique:
-Split screen:
I use split screen to enhance the impact of this
film on the audience, this editing technique is
not as eye-catching as other techniques, it will
not make people feel uncomfortable and give
the audience a refreshing feeling.
-Cross cut:
I use cross cut to tell to show the narrative of
the film, one is the character in high school and
on is the character when she is working. It will
create enigma to the audience let the audience
curious about what is going to happen next.
-black and white filter
I use the black and white filter to help
audience understand the time change
between to period.
• Background Sound editing:
-realistic ambient sound: help the audience to enter the world I create
-foot step: make the character more realistic by having different pitch of foot step
-background music: set a emotion to the film, create a atmosphere
• Character:
I created a positive image of main character by her wearing a smart suit, which shows she is a high
power working woman. challenge the convention of romance drama, which stereotype woman in a
ignorant way.
This way, the audience will feel good about them self when they watch the film, because the
reinforcement of this idea is positive. Due to the majority of the audience being female this will also
further engage them by seeing an empowered female.
• Titles:
I use fancy titles for may film, which suits the atmosphere and tone of my film. The titles are playful and
are reminiscent of high school, and the playfulness of that time period.
How would it be distributed as a
real media text?
Different ways to distribute my film:
Traditional way:
Major distributer
Mini-major
Independent distributor
Online distributor
Why majors would not distribute my film
• Because my film is not large budget
• My film does not have famous actor
• Many major distributor distribute action films, as
they are the most successful. The genre of my film
is romantic drama. Typically they are produced by
mini majors or independent studios, due to the fact
they are more niche.
• Major distributor are typically horizontally
integrated, meaning that they distribute the
products that they produce.
Similar films distribution company who likely
to distribute my film
• Let me eat your pancreas
My film is pretty similar to these film,
which the genre are both romantic
drama, and the time difference
between high school and work. Also
related to dreams and reality.
So I think if my film want to distribute in
Japan, Toho company, is the first on my
list.
• About time
About time is a romantic
comedy which is also
related to time. The
leading man has the
ability to travel back in
time, which is a grate film
let the audience think
about what is the most
important things to you in
live, and how to make the
most out of it.
If I want to distribute my
film even though major
company is quite a risk
but I will still try universal.
Mini and independent
• I think mini and independent film distributor is more
likely to distribute my film, because they are okay
with low budget films, and does not need to contain
famous actors. Also is cheaper to distribute, even
though it means less audience, but still it has a bigger
chance than major film distributor.
Self release: Netflix
-I will choose self release for my film because it can guarantee
that my film can be distribute 100%, release online is a very
popular and recommended, like distribute it on Netflix. A good
things about releasing it on to Netflix, is there are a wide range
of audience, it has unlimited shelf space, and is cheap to
distribute, because no mater my film is successful or not, they
won’t they will not lose a lot for this, but if the movie is
successful, it will be good for them and for me.
Promotion
• Cross media convergence: Instagram/ Twitter/ Facebook/ website/snapchat/
YouTube/ premiere
let the actor post something about this film on social media, which attracts attention for the film
• Trailer-YouTube
Create a YouTube account for this film, and uploading some trailers.
• Technological convergence: self releasing promote by your self
• Synergy: Merchandise
let Topshop produce a top for my film/let sony produce a theme song for the film.
• Website
Create a website for the movie and sending all of the link about the merchandise and trailers.
• Film festival
Distribute the film to a film festival maybe there will be a chance major company pick on you and
distribute for you.
Thank you
