Learning aim A: Understanding employment and career opportunities in the media sector
The media industries.
The media industry is a massive platform. It mainly consisted of many other industries such
as film, TV, radio, animation, interactive media, press, publishing, video games, advertising
and marketing.
The filmIndustry
The filmindustry us one of the most popular sectors in the creative industry. It consists of
many jobs role such as directing, producing and scriptwriting etc.
Job roles in the film industry
Producers
Producers in the film industry are employed by a certain company who oversees
development of a product and they make sure that everything runs smoothly during
production. For example, they oversee the pre-production and postproduction of a project
and they must make sure that every is on schedule tell all the others project employees
what to do how thing should look like. For example, you can find job opportunities to
become a film producer on a website/app called Indeed where you can apply to work for
many filmcompanies or theatres to be a producer to create and teach.
Directors
Directors in the film industry oversee each creative aspect of a product. They hold on to a
certain vision on what product they want to make, and they keep the thought all the way
through production. They also direct the cast and crew to help create what the director
envisions the film. For example, you can find job opportunities on a website called
SmartRecruiters.com where you can apply to become a filmdirector for film companies
such as Brave Bison.
Camera operators
Camera operators in the film industry are responsible for capturing each shot of a film or tv
program. They usually follow a camera script to help show what techniques they should use
for certain scenes. For example, you can find job opportunities to become a camera
operator using a website/app called LinkedIn where you can apply to work to small film
companies such as Linney.
Sound recordists
Sound recordists in the filmindustry are responsible for delivering professional and
sophisticated sound mainly for a live broadcast or performance in a play. For example, you
can apply to work for a company called The Mandy Network on their own website called
mandy.com where you can become a sound recordist.
Picture and sound editors
Picture and sound editors in the filmindustry manage the sound effects, camera footage
and graphics of a film or tv program and then they use them to determine which footage to
use for the final product during post-production. For example, you can find many career
opportunities in Indeed where you can apply to become a picture or sound editor for
companies such as PitStop Productions and The Third Floor.
Screenwriters
Screenwriters in the filmindustry are responsible for what we should be able to see on
screen and they are also responsible for showing the cast and crew on what actions they
need to do in screen what story they must tell. For example, you can apply t become a
screenwriter for a big streaming service called Netflix why applying on a website called
freelancevideocollective.com.
Recruitment in the filmindustry
Most films and tv companies advertise their job roles on tv and billboard adverts, personal
contacts, personal websites and social media platforms. For example, Disney recruits’
employees by doing face to face interviews on versus assessment days. They ask various
important questions such as former work experience, their certain job roles and abilities and
their overall behaviour in the film industry. The reason why they do this is because Disney is
known for their prolific, but high standard films and they only recruit the best people for the
job. Another example would be how BBC and ITV recruit their employees. They usually
advertise their job opportunities on their personal websites, and they do so that they know
if anyone is looking for a job in that sector.
Contracts for employment
There are many contracts in the film industry such as part-time, full-time contracts and
voluntary work. Part time contracts in the film industry are like full time contracts. However,
with part time contracts, you are expected to work for less than 35 hours per week, and you
may sometimes agree with some hours that you are given, however, you may receive offer
to do overtime. Like part time contracts, full time contacts have fixed or more spread-out
working hour. However, with full time contracts, you are expectation to work 35 hours or
more depending on your specific job role in the filmindustry. Voluntary work in the film
industry mainly focuses on an employee who is helping behind the scenes of a film
production to most of the time, have experience on what it could potentially be like working
in the film industry. They can also be paid or unpaid voluntary work. For example, I film
company called Bounce cinema recruit hard working and aspiring filmmakers to voluntarily
create a short film for their company to help give them experience.
Finding employment opportunities
When finding employment in the film industry. Most film companies look at various things
such as, CVs, Showreels, and social media site showing off their work.
CVs are used to help give the employers a better understanding of what the job finders
specific skills are what they are best at in the filmindustry. For example, a job finder is
looking for a job as a screenwriter, he would need to talk about what skills he has when
talking about it such as good storytelling or a good understanding of script formats.
Showreel are often the most frequent and effective way in getting a job in the filmindustry
as they are used to show off people’s skills and capability of a certain job role as they show
people own original content such as a poster that they made or a film that they produced to
show off their skills to an employer.
Similar to showreels, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and
Pinterest are a good way of showing off people’s content they have created and their own
personal skills that they have. It is also a good way to help manage all of your personal
projects into more organised places for employers to locate more easily.
Interview techniques
Some film companies have different requirements when going for an interview. Some
companies require certain dress codes such as formal or casual wear depending on the
company and some may require certain skills such as directing or producing.
However, pretty much every single production company pays attention to a personality and
the tone. They would look at the way the speak such as their use of language and their
temperament when speaking and talking about their certain skills. You also have to make
sure that you keep eye contact when speaking at all time as employers mainly look for a
person ability to listen and take in information. Another thing that they will notice is body
language. Body langued can also interprets a person’s personality and how motivated they
could potentially be.
Increasing career opportunities
Overall, working in the creative industry voluntarily or for work experience and can increase
your chances of being employed on the spot or in the future. For example, if someone is
doing work experience for education or just for fun, that experience can be added to a CV so
that when that particular job finder goes for an interview in the future, the employers will
know that he may have the skills for the job they are applying. These can also apply for
talking about them on a blog for show it off on a showreel. When finding career
opportunities, you can find many jobs by looking at various websites, apps, newspaper
article and even social media sites such as Facebook or Instagram.
Professional behaviour
In the film industry, it is very important to show professional behaviour because it shows
how motivated a person can and to see if that particular person is the right one for the job.
For example, employers also pay attention to a person punctuality and their time
management such as when they arrive for the interview.
Structure of a Certain Film Sector
in the creative industry, most of the sectors in it are mostly the filmand if not identical to
each other. For example, the structure of the filmand TV sector are pretty much identical to
each other while some sectors like the marketing and publishing sector have some
similarities with a few different structures.
Public Service Media
Public service media is a service where the sector reports to the public by talking about on
TV adverts, radio broadcasts, social media sites and news reports. However, on order to
make it as effective as possible, you will need many employees in different job roles such as
sound editor and possibly engineers, writers, journalists and general editors. Some of this
job roles can be used in filmand tv such as a news report on BBC and ITV.
Commercial Media
Commercial media is mainly the use of print and digital advertisement in the creative
industry to help create a profit from a certain product. Many fast-food chain companies
such as McDonalds and KFC mainly advertise their products online such as websites or social
media to help pull in an audience and to persuade them to buy their products which will
lead to them gaining a profit from them. To help achieve these online adverts, you will
possibly need a team consisting of a writer and camera operator or photographer.
Independent Media
Independent media can exist in any form if it is not controlled or owned any other
companies in creative industry or is not controlled by the government or any political party.
You normally see independent media in newspaper companies such as the daily main or the
sun.
Vertical and Horizontal Integration
Horizontal Interaction only consists of being invested into the same sector though out its
time as a business. Unlike horizontal integration, Vertical Integration can branch out too
many different sectors. Most big film companies such as warner bros and Disney use
Vertical Integration as Disney own many major filmbrands such as Pixar, Marvel and Star
Wars.
Cross Media
Cross Media is used to distribute many different products in different sectors. For example,
amazon and eBay sell many different products from different sector online to help make a
very big profit.
Multi-Platform Media
Multi-platform media is where a company distributes content over a variety of different
platforms or outlets. For example, in the film industry, a film can be distributed physically or
digitally such as a filmbeing realised on DVD and BLU RAY and can digitally streamed or
bought on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
Multinational Media
Multinational Media is mainly the use of distributing products across the entire world. For
example, the film company Disney promote their filmand other products across the world
by distributing poster and teaser trailers all over social media and cinemas to help promote
a film and to make the biggest profit possible.
Legal and ethical for employees in the film industry
When working in the filmindustry, all employee must me aware of all the Legal and Ethical
issues that can occur during a production of a film. they must be aware of issues such as
plagiarismand copyrights, representations and beliefs and the use of certain language in a
film script or production. For example, if a filmmaker is making a filmis suitable for people
over 12, they have got to make sure that their material is appropriate for that certain
censorship such as religious beliefs or thematic elements such as racismand sexismand
they must also make sure that the finished product passes through the watersheds to help
find out when it’s the best time to air the film if it going to be in broadcast such as BBC and
Channel 4. Another example would be copyright claims and plagiarism. For example, if a
screenwriter tells a story that could be too similar to someone else’s story, that screenwriter
can involve legal action for using their work in their work without any formal permission
which can lead to fines and with extreme cases prison sentences and film companies
shutting down completely. Which is why it is a good idea to have agents and attorneys
throughout a production of a film to help the filmmakers stay out of legal trouble.
