Question 1
Briony Folwell
• Through my preliminary research I found out that horror
films all have certain qualities that should be followed in
order to make a successful horror film. I have included
these qualities in my trailer as well as listened to what
my target audience wanted. My trailer needed a good
storyline to keep the viewers interested as there was
minimal blood and gore as requested. My trailer builds
of the storyline at the start of the trailer so the gets
more of connection with the character and encourages
them to go and see the film.
• One of the products I created to go along side my trailer
was a promotional poster. Once I had researched other
horror film posters I realised each poster had one main
convention that challenges the generic conventions of
horror movie posters. As with all movie posters the villain
is the main image and usually makes eye contact with the
viewer. I had a couple of ideas in mind for my poster I
decided to use this one because I feel it tested the
conventions in a less risky way. I follow these conventions
but I tested them by using both images associated with
the villain as my film was about possession. To make it
clear to the viewer that both images were the same
person I overlaid them which I haven’t seen done on
other horror posters. I wanted my poster to be
recognised as a horror film poster so I followed other
conventions closely. I lowered the saturation of the
poster as I want to convey the cold and dark feel to the
viewer so that they would know it is a scary film. I used
red text as it looks like it is bleeding and because it
stands out against the black background. I made my
model Lucy look similar to the doll so that it would be
clear that they are both the villain together and that the
doll was turning the character Anna into her.
• My research also told me the
title on posters usually goes
in the lower to upper middle
of the poster but I
challenged this by making
the title at the very top of
the poster. I did this because
the image would draw in the
viewer and as people read
from top to bottom the title
would be the first thing they
read and I wanted them to
remember the title of the
film so they go a check it out.
Generically I have placed the
tagline of the film directly
under the title so the viewer
is further drawn in. I
followed the generic
conventions by placing the
credits at the bottom of the
poster and accompanying
them with the logo of the
production company.
• After researching other horror film websites I noticed that they all has similar colour
schemes of dull and dark colours including red too symbolise blood, pain and anger
plus white to symbolise innocents and purity so I used a fitting scheme for my own
website. I made my website easy to navigate around to make the viewer feel at ease
when using it and therefore not putting them off from seeing the film. I didn’t want
to use too many animations as I felt that it would make to website seem as though it
is trying to hard or be to gaudy. By making the text change colour when hovered
over it makes to viewer clear on what they are clicking on and what page they are
on. This makes the viewer comfortable navigating through the site. In today’s society
social networking is the main form of promotion as it is below the line meaning it is
cheap and easy. Also most people knower days everyone has some kind of internet
presents especially young adults who are my target audience. Social networks also
allow them to keep their audience informed and to get audience feedback as they
progress so it is quick to change things. For these reasons I placed recognisable links
to popular social networks that show up on every page on the
• The background music I used on the website was a
piece of music that as used in the trailer so people will
recognise that knowing that they are the same film.
Normally in horror films the most suspenseful and scary
parts are filmed in dark or low light and the parts where
you’re supposed to feel safe are in daylight. I test these
conventions because the kill committed where all in day
light and they were outside of the house suggesting
they are in public. I did this because I wanted to show
that nowhere is safe and that things can happen at any
time. I also wanted people to feel like these things could
happen in their own lives which makes the experience
more thrilling and scary for them.
• The main character Anna, who is unknowingly also
the villain of the film; she is an innocent little girl
showing that she is the victim and the sprit inside to
doll is the villain. The other main character is Anna’s
mother who is also a victim and is trying to help her
daughter. With the protagonist (Anna’s mother) she is
also innocent and a ‘helpless female’ as emphasized
by the arguments with her husband. These are the
generic conventions of a horror film protagonist. With
the antagonist (Anna acting under the influence of
Lilith ) you never see her true face and she has a
background that is her motives which is discovered
through the film as with other horror film villains.
• In conclusion I think that Lilith has followed enough of the horror film conventions
for it to be accepted as a horror film and it has test enough to be successful as it is
not a copy of another film.
