1) The document discusses marketing strategies for films aimed at a 15+ teenage audience. It analyzes how the film "Rings" used social media like Snapchat and Facebook to promote jump scares.
2) It then discusses the film "Orphan" and how it used more traditional advertising methods. The document argues more modern films should use platforms like social media that target teenagers.
3) Finally, it discusses using a mix of social media, newspapers, and posters to promote the author's own hypothetical film for both younger and older audiences. Emphasis is placed on leaving audiences on edge to encourage viewing the full film.
2. How did I attract / address an audience
• When deciding how to attract an audience I had to consider the
target audience of my film which is and will be for teenagers as my
BBFC rating is a ‘15’ this means that the film is suitable for people
aged 15 and over. The BBFC rating 15 usually means that it contains
some scenes of violence and blood and gore however it is not to bad
A 15 rated film may also contain some bad language and more
mature scenes which may not be suitable for people under the age of
15.
3. The Orphan
The film ‘Orphan’ made in 2009 is a psychological
horror it is about two people who decide to adopt a
nine year old girl, who always seems to be he middle
of trouble. The film was marketed through a variety
of different ways such as adverts which were shown
at the beginning of other films in cinema. They also
used adverts in magazines alongside reviews of the
film personally I think they used a very old fashioned
way of advertising their film in order for them to get
the product out there. However many things have
now changed and progressed with they way the
advertise films; through social media platforms .
4. Rings (2017) • An example of a film that has used different ways of advertising
their film which would be more suitable for the target audience of
15. This film considered what would be the best platform to
promote their film as social media has become so big especially
within this age group they decided to promote this through
Snapchat and Facebook. Firstly they done a prank in ’Television
stores’ in which the girl from rings climbs out of the TV and scares
the customers this was then put on Facebook for everyone to see
and share around to promote the film. The film producers also
decided to team up with snapchat in order to make a filter which
would be on everyone’s snapchat. This film used very different ways
to promote their film in contrast to ‘Orphan’ and they used the
target audience especially to choose the platform in which they was
going to promote their film.
5. Conventions of the film
• To attract an audience I had to consider what the specific target audience I chose
for my film may like to see when watching a movie. As my BBFC rating of my film
is a 15. I had to ensure that my movie was being aimed at this age range of 15
and over. My movie has been made into a hybrid movie of thriller and horror. This
is because it does have some horror scenes however it is mostly thriller which is
making the audience want to watch more and sit on the edge of their seat
questioning what is going to happen next. The background music I used
throughout the opening scene of my thriller was used to build tension and
suspense for the audience, leading them to believe something bad is going to
happen. As well as this I also used some sound effects which would fit in to the
movie. For example the glass smashing I have made this so the effect is louder
than the music to emphasize what is happening and to also build tension. When
deciding what music to use I always ensured it was something very spooky and
has a hint to it that something bad is going to happen as I feel like this would
create tension for an audience and make them want to watch more of the movie.
6. Unique Selling Point
• Personally I think as my film is aimed at people 15 years and older. I am
going to use a variety of different ways of marketing my film. The first way I
am thinking of marketing my film is through social media platforms this is
because social media has become such a large platform especially for
teenagers which therefore means this would be a good way to market my
film I think doing sponsored posts on platforms such as Instagram and
Facebook would be a good way of marketing my film to a younger
generation. As well as that I think using old fashioned ways of marketing
my film would be good for people of an older generation. I think putting
reviews in newspapers would be a good way of advertising the film and
getting the film out to an audience. As well as that I think I would make
posters and adverts to get the film out to the public.
7. The social media platforms I used
Throughout the process of making my title sequence of my film I used
many different Social Media platforms such as;
Facebook – I used Facebook In order to promote my film and upload
the process of me making my film.
Instagram – I used Instagram in the same way as what I used Facebook,
however from my primary research I found that Facebook is mainly
used by older people however Instagram is aimed at the younger target
market. This way it allowed me to appeal to a wider target audience.
Twitter – I used twitter to create polls to get opinions on my film and I
felt it was best to get an audience involved so that they would tell more
people and to make them feel more part of the movie.
8. Analysis of Teaser Trailer
• When making my Teaser Trailer I tried to make sure I was leaving the
audience on edge which would encourage them to go and watch the
film. I think my Teaser Trailer meets the genre of a Thriller this is
because of the dark lighting I used throughout the movie. I also
shown in the film that my movie was in a disequilibrium time. Which
is when everything has been disrupted from an equilibrium time. I
made sure my teaser trailer was very jumpy to ensure it did not give
to much away to the audience.
