This document discusses biosecurity measures in poultry farms. It recommends removing organic material from the farm environment through cleaning and scrubbing. 2.  Removing urine, fecal matter, and other organic material
from the environment.
 Soaking and scrubbing.
 Manure pit wind direction is very important.
 Remove webs in corners and roof.

 Iodine, chlorine, glutaraldehyde, phenolic compounds,
quaternary ammonium compounds, and alcohol.

 Hard water – Neutralizes – So, use soft water.
 Organic material – Inactivates – So remove it.
 Dry surfaces – Best
 Warm solutions - Best

4.  Methods of application
1) Mopping
2) Spraying
 Easy in poultry because of “ALL IN, ALL OUT” stocking
policy.
 Clean and heat utensils.
 Wash with warm water – to remove fatty material.
 Detergent – Kills bacteria.

 2) Disinfect – Phenol or Lysol or Iodine.
 3) Blowing with flame gun.
 4) White washing – With Lime
 5) Spray 2% NaOH on the floor
 6) Overnight fumigation – 1:2 of KMNO4 and 10%
formalin.

8.  Horizontal transmission – air, water, feed, litter, secretions,
saliva, housing, humans, vehicles, rodents, equipment……
 Vertical transmission – Commonly seen in poultry – From
hen to chicks.

9.  Farm premises – Fencing and subfencing.
 Cleaning – Scrubbing
 Disinfection – Staff, Vehicles, and legs before entrance
into the farm (Foot dip).
 Restriction of movement – young flock should be visited
first.
 Personnel management – Visitors should not be allowed.
BIOSECURITY MEASURES IN POULTRY FARMS

10.  Control of airborne diseases – depends on location of
poultry farm (away from water ways of migratory birds, 2
km distance between two farms, far from road, Clear 50
mts area around the shed).
 Poultry stock (Chicks, fertile eggs, hatchery, pullets,
breeding stocks) – Salmonella free, vaccinated, hygiene,
Quarantine.

11.  Housing system – Age wise separation, clean areas to dirty
areas by personnels, safety before going into healthy flock
from diseased flock, Follow All-in All-out system.
 Feed – Assessed for microbiological quality and
mycotoxin contaminations.
 Water – Water should be free of E.coli, salmonella, and
other microbes.
