The student evaluated different TV adverts and analyzed their visuals, music, audience and meaning. They then chose an advert to analyze in more detail. For a class project, the student and their group created an advertising campaign. They came up with a company name and slogan, designed a logo, and chose to advertise bottled water. The group researched existing water brands, created advertising materials like a logo and print ads, planned and filmed a video advert, then presented their campaign to the class. The student was pleased with the final results but noted one area for improvement in matching the actor's clothing during reshoots.

Evaluating TV Ads and Creating an Advertising Campaign
1. Unit 18: Evaluation
Firstly we looked at different TV adverts and had to analysis them, evaluating the
Visual/Text, Music/Sound FX, Audience and Meaning/Message. By doing this it helped to
gain an idea of how advertising works and what is involved. After, we then had to choose an
advert and write in details about that advert; talking about the details of the advert, music
etc. Then we had to choose our groups to start our own advertising campaign.
Secondly our group had to create a company name. We decided to call
our company ‘Hydra advertising’ named after the mythical creature. We
chose our slogan to be ‘re-generating good ideas’ which I thought was
clever because if you cut a Hydra’s head off it will re-generate another so
tying together that concept with our slogan shows that our company will
create more and more good ideas. We used simple colours for our logo
like black, white and red because they are very bold and contrast well
together. Also using a cartoon image of a Hydra would help customers to
remember what our company is called.
After coming up with our
company name, we then had
to decide which product we
would like to advertise out of
the following: A new cereal
bar, a new brand of sugar
free chewing gum or a brand
of bottled water. After
considering all products we
decided to advertise a new
brand of bottled water
because we had stronger
ideas on how to advertise
this product in a unique way
but good enough to make
customers want to buy it.
We then had to decide a
name for this new product
and as a group we all
individually put a name
forward and voted the one
2. we thought was the best. In the end, we decided to choose the name ĵeto because we
thought that it’s a simple but catchy and easy to remember name. Ĵeto means release in
Esperanto so we thought that having this word would allow us to create a suitable and
quirky slogan for the company. Before creating our logo and more information about our
product, we each researched existing water brands to gain a better understanding of the
competitors in the market and how they promote their product.
I decided to choose the brand Volvic. By
researching there brand I learnt a lot about
the product i.e. their catchy slogans and
brief information about their product. I
also looked at their print advertising and
their TV adverts which gave inspiration of
how to promote our product the best way
possible and simple techniques on how we
can achieve that.
After doing this research we then continued to start more
work on our actual product. Firstly, we all created a logo
and chose which one we thought was best. We decided to
choose the logo I created because we found that it was
bold, colourful and would fit really well on our bottle.
After this we edited the logo a bit more by adding a runner
to the image so that it ties in with our target audience.
Each of us then had to create different print adverts
individually. Each member was dedicated to either
creating a print advert for a magazine, a bus advert,
website banner or a tube/train advert. This helped
advertisement for our brand so more people will see them
and we can get more customers. I had to create the
website banner which would be used on a popular
website. I decided to choose the Barclays premiere league
website because this tied in with our target audience, so
we would get our perfect customers for our brand.
3. We then looked for locations for our advert. This gave us a brief idea of what areas and
backgrounds could be used in our advert. We knew that our advert would involve some
sport so we wanted to look for sport locations e.g. tennis/basketball courts, field.
After finding the locations, we then
created a story board to plan out
our advert. This is when everyone
in our group put our own ideas
together as one. We choose to
involve basketball as the sport in
our advert because there was a lot
of locations and facilities for this
sport. However, in our plan we also
involved another sport which was
tennis but we didn’t use this sport
in our final advert because we
thought it will be more time
consuming adding another sport to
film and we wanted to focus on one sport and film the best that we could on that.
When it came to filming, I was using the camera a lot to filmparts and also help direct the
advert. We all put in little ideas that made a difference in our advert that helped to improve
it. Over all I think filming went really well. We used a variety of shot types to improve the
way it looked and using different locations helped show our story line better.
I was very pleased with how our final advert came out. I think the different video clips tied
in well together and the advert runs smoothly. The acting was good in the video so it made
our advert look professional; also using music over the top made the advert catchy and
remember able. At the end of our advert we added our logo and an image of our products.
Everyone in our group had an input on the video which made it a great team effort.
However, when filming, josh wore 2 different coloured tops which makes our advert look
unprofessional, so to improve this next time we need to make sure that he wears the same
top so we don’t make this mistake again. But, I think we edited it to the best of our ability,
so it turned out good and I’m happy with it.
Next, we had to create a pitch and present it to the class. We
created a simple power point to present behind us while we talk
about our company. We created a small script and learnt it, but
most of the pitch was improvised to the best of our ability. We
also had to improvise because when it came to presenting our
pitch one of our team members was absent. So we had to
present her part as well as the ones we had rehearsed. I think our
pitch went well, I spoke confidently and explained in much detail
4. as I could about our company and so did the other members of the group. Feedback from
the teacher and pupils was also positive. To improve next time having all members would
help but this didn’t make a massive difference.
Overall I think this unit was very successful. We all had input on creating our company and
creating the advert and this helped to really make the ‘Ĵeto’ brand be created like a
professional company. Everything was done in time and wasn’t rushed. Everyone worked
well as a team, each member put the same amount of effort in which was a high standard.
Any changes next time would be during the filming stage, making sure the actor was
wearing the same clothes as the other clips and maybe adding more detail to the story of
the advert but this was a small error which wasn’t very noticeable.
