Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people without the need for adaptation. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula that enables all individuals to gain knowledge through flexible options that reduce barriers while maintaining high standards. UDL supports learning through three principles that correspond to three brain networks: recognition, strategic, and affective networks.

2. Find your designated partner. On the sticky note provided, write as many examples as you can think of where universal design features have resulted in extra benefits for people other than those they were designed for. 6. The Recognition Network enables us to identify and understand information ideas and concepts. Supporting Principle: To support recognition learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of presentation.

7. The Strategic Network enables us to plan, execute and monitor actions and skills. Supporting Principle: To support strategic learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of expression and apprenticeship.

8. The Affective Network enables us to engage with tasks and learning and with the world around us. Supporting Principle: To support affective learning, provide multiple, flexible options for engagement.

9. UDL provides a framework for individualizing learning in a standards-based environment through flexible pedagogy and tools. It challenges teachers to incorporate flexibility into instructional methods and materials as a way to accommodate every student in the classroom. -Rose and Meyer
