Authoritarian Governments

• Governments that have unlimited power.
• RESTRICT the rights of people.
• Examples
1. Totalitarian Dictatorships
2. Absolute Monarchies
3. Oligarchies


What happens in Authoritarian
Governments?

• Power is taken and kept by force
• We don’t get to make choices in...
• Elections
• Jobs
• Schools
• Only the national government has power.

Totalitarian Dictatorship
• One leader has all of the power.
• Advantage: decisions are made quickly
• Disadvantages:
• a lack of individual freedoms
• leader is not accountable to people

Absolute Monarchy

• A monarch (King or Queen) has all of
the power.
• Disadvantages:
• leader is not accountable to people


Oligarchy

• A small group of people has the power.
• Disadvantages:
• leaders are not accountable to people
