Transfer stations are processing sites where waste is deposited temporarily before being transported to treatment or disposal sites. They are needed when hauling distances are long. There are three main types of transfer stations: direct load stations where waste is emptied directly into transport vehicles; storage load stations where waste is emptied into storage pits and loaded by equipment; and combined stations using both methods. Transport means include conventional trucks and trailers, rail transport, hydraulic systems that use pressurized water, and pneumatic systems using vacuum tubes.

3. TRANSFER STATION
• A transfer Station is a processing site where waste is
deposited temporarily.
• In transfer stations, local waste collection vehicles
deposit the waste into larger site containers.
• The larger size containers then transport the waste to
the treatment facility or disposal sites.

4. Need of Transfer Station
• When hauling distance to processing site or disposal
facility is high.
• Processing centres or disposal stations in remote
location cannot be reached directly from highways.
• These results in occurrences of illegal dumping due to
excessive haul distance.

1) Direct Load-transfer Station
• At direct-load transfer station, the wastes in the collection vehicles
are emptied directly into the vehicles to be used to transport them
to processing centre, MRFs or final disposal.

2) Storage Load-transfer Station
• At storage load transfer station, the wastes are emptied
directly into storage pit from which they are loaded into
transport vehicles by various types of equipment.
• The difference between direct-load and storage-load transfer
station is that the pit is designed with a capacity to store
waste.

• It is a multipurpose facilities where both facilities is
