The history of mankind has been the history of improvement. Darwin's concept of the survival of the fittest certainly applies to the business community. In the construction industry, the failure rate is about 25% and although there are many reasons for this, one of the prominent ones is that companies do not organize for sustainability and do not continue to do the things necessary to face ever changing challenges which give them the fuel for sustainability. Total Quality Management is a process for continual improvement. Construction contractors should evaluate what TQM has to offer and from that evaluation customize concepts that are appropriate to its culture and needs. This webinar provides the guidance to construction contractors' evaluation of the principles of TQM which can and perhaps should be implemented in a given company.

2018 Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) National Conference Presentation on the benefits of BIM as a tool for Project Management.
Abstract:
Project planning, stakeholder engagement, cost and schedule management may all be improved if we think of Building Information Modeling (BIM) simply as information that needs to be managed. From the selection of a suitable work breakdown structure, to the type and nature of information being received, stored, processed and communicated, BIM is a model-centric structure for existing project management processes.
With this model centric view, a project may be broken into volumes, areas, models, assets and deliverables, with corresponding cost and reporting structures that enable monitoring of project performance and delivery of each asset. Aligning project delivery to the client’s view of an asset allows more transparent reporting and offers a clear understanding of not only the financial and schedule impacts of decisions throughout a project, but also the physical impacts and knock-on effects in the real world.
BIM also provides a rich focal point for stakeholder engagement. When combined with Virtual Reality and Augmented reality solutions, it offers a greater sense of awareness of project outcomes through real and interactive experiences for both the technical and non-technical stakeholder. Improving stakeholder interaction and the quality of feedback has been shown to improve buy-in to the final solution and reduces risk during implementation stages.
In this presentation I provide a simple way of looking at BIM, its benefits, and how one can use it to better manage projects in the future.

Digital construction for DSD - relocation of Sewage Treatment PlantStephen Au
Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) is the largest secondary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong. It occupies 28 hectares of land and serves a population of about 630,000 in Sha Tin and Ma On Shan Districts, which produces 340,000m3 of sewage per day.
In the face of increasing demand for land resources, rock cavern development is considered as one of the new sources of land supply. By relocating existing Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to caverns, the original land can be released for residential development.
Applications of BIM in the project include: incorporating programme information in the BIM model to review constructability methods by using Construction Method Simulations (CMS), and to enhance safety on site; checking critical dimensions and ensuring there were no spatial conflicts; generating technical queries to give stakeholders a better understanding of the design and reduce design conflicts; sharing information to all stakeholders through cloud technologies; controlling the inspection workflow using BIM 360; and Cost Savings Design (CSD) reviews to provide more accurate estimations of construction time. The BIM model helped with constructing major elements of the project, including the steel bridge that was built with prefabricated segments. Each segment was modelled in Autodesk® Advance Steel, which enabled the transfer of digital information for fabrication via shop drawings.
Online BIM Project Execution Plan (PXP) set out detailed provisions on internal collaboration and cross-discipline collaboration. Coordination always is a challenge in running the BIM project. We spend a lot of time for RFI or issue reporting. Then get all together for coordination. Actually many problems can be easily address if you can easily view, navigate, measure, section or bookmark via Dalux BIM Viewer. For example, measuring headroom or sectioning are extremely fast (in minutes) rather than output to the AutoCAD from the BIM model (in hours). Attached is a short notes of how the process is.

Mobile technology for construction safety and quality management hkie 2017Stephen Au
Construction safety and productivity are the top priority of improvement for Hong Kong construction industry. BIM, IoT, AI and Robotic are the hot topics being discussed. But these need time and resources to make it happen. There is an alternative that can be implemented quickly, easy and at very low cost by using mobile Apps.
In this evening seminar, the speakers will explain the new approach for site safety and quality inspection for site task management. Several real case studies will be demonstrated by using the mobile / cloud computing technologies for improving safety, quality and productivity.
The general risk reduction benefit is through the systematic identification of potential hazards. Moreover, safety planning in construction is often a fragmented process during the project execution planning phase and involves different project personnel. This can present issues in communications and create difficulties for safety engineers to perform accident prevention analyses and recommend appropriate safety measures. Thus, BIM has the technological advantage to streamline communications as well incorporate safety checking over the entire course of the construction project to facilitate safety planning. For example, through clash analysis in BIM, the risk of human error can be minimized by defining where and when fall prevention bracket should be in place to support the scarfold working platform.
Checklist for construction industry safetyStephen Au
Traditional safety supervisor has a long checklist recorded by hand with photo taken on daily and weekly basis. It took them huge amount of reporting work load after site inspection. Under these heavy duty, the report will become not comprehensive and in details. Also it is not easy drawn to the attention of the site agent immediately.
What if by using mobile apps – Checklists, the safety supervisor record the safety issues with photo taking marking in the construction plan via the mobile phone or tablet. Then a comprehensive report is generated automatically and sends to the site agent for follow up action immediately. Next day the safety supervisor go back to the site to investigate if corrective action is done or the site agent send back the photo via Aproplan or Checklists to verify the required action is taken. Under these circumstances, the construction accidents will be greatly reduced.
Instant construction site safety inspection and follow up are critical for ' Zero accident'. Using mobile apps Aproplan can easily achieve the goal and reduce the work load of safety manager.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a project
delivery approach that integrates people,
systems, business structures and practices into
a process that collaboratively harnesses the
talents and insights of all participants to optimize
project results, increase value to the owner,
reduce waste, and maximize efficiency through
all phases of design, fabrication, and
construction. (http://ipd-ca.net/overview/)

Achieve 1st Time Quality
It's one thing to have the technology at your fingertips
and use it to it's full extent. Some people just like to
do things the way they have always done it, even if
it's inefficient, costly and not very accurate.
