Why Do We Need Effective Classroom Management
Teachers often wonder how to execute the ideal lesson, what structure should they adopt and how to
ensure that all their students cooperate. What we need to recognise is what classroom management is
and how much does student behavior factor? Why is it significant? What strategies does my mentor
use to establish classroom management within the class? If we know the behaviour of our students,
what do we need to do to ensure that effective classroom management is successfully acquired? All
these questions need to be answered as they all link towards a successful lesson and student
cooperation.
During my two weeks of placement, I was placed at St Albans Primary School in a prep class.
Considering that these students are at a young age, they are in a position where they are still
developing skills and are in the process of becoming mature, therefore classroom management is
crucial. In the class that I was in, students would often cause trouble with other members of the class,
they are easily distracted and overall difficult to handle. Being that I am a pre service teacher, they
often took advantage of me while I conducted the class, they would do the events explained above,
and this is due to the lack of classroom management and my ability to maintain student behaviour.
This led to students not understanding the task at hand and the overall focus of the lesson was not
acquired. It is crucial that classroom management is maintained, without a theoretical approach to
classroom

Ad in yelled cole as he was getting ready to serve.
The score was 5 4 we were up one set of the two kids from Wheeler. The game had been a very close
match so far. The first two games going 6 4 and 4 6. The team that won this set would win the match.
It was match point. We needed one more point to win the match. Cole then loaded up to serve the ball.
The serve then came whizzing past my head. The kid from wheeler had a very good forehand and cole
had served right to it. The kid from wheeler then returned the serve cross court back to Cole. Cole then
placed a very nice lob into the back left corner of the court. This corner was also a forehand shot for
the kid from wheeler. The kid from wheeler was trying extremely hard to cross all the way back over
to the corner to get the ball that Cole had placed so tremendously. The kid had gotten to the ball just in
time before it took its second bounce. He then weakly tried to return a lob back to Cole. Little did he
know it was too short. He had hit the ball right at me at the net. The ball floated very slowly through
the air. I then loaded up and got ready to hit an overhead shot.
At the end of summer I had decided to try tennis for the first time. I had decided not to play soccer. I
had played soccer since I was like 3.
My mom had said many times Maybe you should try out tennis because you are not playing soccer? .

Sociological Perspectives Of Sociology And Its Impact On...
Sociology is an important part of today s society as it is all around us and is in everything we do.
Sociology is the study of, the behaviour of people within society. It helps us to understand how society
works and how the impact of relationships and interactions between people influence society.
Sociology is shown through relationships, cultures, class, religion, education and upbringing.
Sociology has different sociological perspectives for example symbolic interactionism and
functionalism. Symbolic interactionism studies individuals and small groups within society and how
they behave, interact and believe about how society is what it is. Symbolic Interactionism was created
by Herbert Blumer. He based symbolic interactionism on three things which were that people act on
the meanings of things, social interactions build meanings and meanings depend and are modified by
people interacting with each other. Through communication and language, symbols are provided to
understand the world that we live in. Smoking is an example of symbolic interactionism as teenagers
believe it is cool to smoke, even though it Is bad for you and could lead to killing you but they think it
makes them look good in front of their friends.
Functionalism is the belief of everyone in society sharing the same norms and values that get passed
on through generations. Functionalists see society like a human body they believe that if one thing
stops working then everything else will slowing stop working

Disadvantages Of Intelligence Led Policing
In preparation for my debate on the topics of intelligence led policing and Compstat policing, I have
discovered the many advantages and disadvantages of using intelligence led policing and Compstat
policing. According to Carter Carter (2009), intelligence led policing is the collection of and analysis
of data relating to crime, used by law enforcement in developing tactical responses to threats and/or
strategic planning related to emerging changing threats (p. 317). When applied correctly, intelligence
led policing is a tool used for information sharing in identifying threats and developing responses to
prevent those threats from reaching fruition (Carter, 2011). One of the advantages of using intelligence
led policing is its incorporation of data analysts. The role of the data analyst in the context of
intelligence led policing allows them to take specially trained analysts to take raw data from
information found in reports and translate it into useful information for the officers, allowing the
police to deploy resources more effectively and efficiently (Griffiths, 2016). Another advantage is its
application through preventative and predictive policing (proactive policing), in which law
enforcement take data and identify crucial variables such as terrorism or the emergence of criminal
organizations, in hopes of stopping the problem at its roots (Carter, 2011). Terrorism is especially
important and emphasized after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers in

Rape And Sexual Violence And Assault And Its Survivors Essay
LITERATURE REVIEW
1.1 Introduction
This is a presentation of findings from the literature review with focus on rape and sexual
violence/assault and its survivors. Extensive literature search was conducted on relevant concepts that
include the definition of rape, sexual violence and assault, consequences of rape and sexual
violence/assault, provision of health services. The search looked at developed and developing
countries as well as war stricken settings. Therefore, the aim was to understand the burden of rape and
sexual violence, its consequences and provision of health services for survivors and constitutional
narrative relating to rape and sexual violence.
1.2 Rape and sexual violence burden
Rape and sexual violence/assault against humankind are among the most pervasive forms of violence.
High prevalence of sexual violence was initially reported in research from Europe and Northern
America. However, other continents are growingly reporting alarming prevalence of sexual violence.
Based on the World Health Organization s (2005) report on multi country study of women s health and
domestic violence against women, approximately 6% to 59% of women globally report forced or
attempted sexual intercourse (by partners or non partners) in their lifetime. While much research has
focused on sexual violence against women and children, various studies have since reported on sexual
violence against men.(1)
Approximately 19.3% of women and 1.7% of men have during their lifetimes been

Why Is Risk Taking Important
From the beginning of mankind to our modern day society, individuals have a tendency to gape at
individuals who put a lot on the line to achieve a desired goal. Whether it be a Marvel superhero to our
local firemen, individuals who put their well being on the line are placed in a high stature in the eyes
of many. We gravitate to be just like these individuals and are ashamed of becoming viewed as a
coward. This idea is prevalent in people of all ages, backgrounds, and gender and will continue to
motivate us to attain glory by means of taking risks. However, it is important to know the fine line
between taking risks and putting yourself in inevitable danger. One must be willing to accept the
consequence of failure. Some of the most successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it isn t equivalent to daredevils who bungee jump or skydive, most of what we do is in the
boundaries of risk taking. People start taking risks from the moment you were born. Babies take the
risk that their caregivers will provide them the right nourishment to prosper. In infants, their first step
to walking involved them taking the risk of falling down. Children take risks of losing whenever they
play a game of competition. High school students take risks when they take standardized exams such
as the SAT which serves as a measuring stick between themselves and their peers. Adults who apply
for a job take the risk of not getting accepted or eventually fired. Old people take the risk of getting up
everyday and face the possibility of injuring their frail bodies. One of the most risky concept in our
modern day world is sports. Sports attract a huge audiences and unite people of all backgrounds.
However, if you watch sports, you likely have a favorite team. If you have a favorite team, you are
putting your money that your preferred franchise will win the championship year after year. As a
result, if you follow a specific team, you face the risk of elimination. This exemplifies that the most
unifying concepts involve risk

Essay about The Forbidding House
It was a cold winter s night. The wind was whistling through the bare branches of the trees. The dead
leaves were dancing noisily across pavements and all was still. That night I was walking down Old
St.Paul s Road when the clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak
tree. I had noticed that almost all of the houses on this abandoned street were too badly damaged for
us to take shelter in, except for one. Lightning split the night sky without a sound, illuminating the
skeletal trees outside. The old Victorian house shook to its very foundations as the peal of thunder
rumbled hatefully across the shimmering, tempestuous lake. Should I stay under the tree ... Show

Once I got to the top my heart thumped harder and faster as I saw a dark figure in the distance,
disturbingly silhouetted in the dark. In the shock I slipped and fell backwards, tumbling down, like
rocks on a cliff face. When I got to the bottom, I felt a ghastly throbbing pain in my back, which hurt
like hell. I slowly got up and my mind was focused on the thing I had seen upstairs. I then felt a cold
breeze that made my bones shiver and hair stand up on end. A giant rat scampered across the floor; it s
beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of the lantern light. It hissed at me. I dropped my lantern.
Suddenly, I was plunged into utter darkness. I took several deep breaths to calm my trembling body
and finished my trek up the stairs. Vivid flashes of lightning illuminated the attic. A vase lay in pieces
in front of the broken window. Well, at least I knew what had caused the crash, I mused to myself. I
found an old threadbare cloak hanging near the window. I now realised that is wasn t a person who I
had seen but simply an old cloak. I suddenly tripped over a large box as I walked. The trunk wasn t
locked, but age had rusted it shut. I gripped the top and pulled with all of my strength. The trunk
protested, but finally gave in. Another rat jumped up at me. I clenched the rat s tail and threw it away
from me. I felt something solid inside the trunk. Whatever I had found, didn t

A Summary Of Content-Related Validity
There are a variety of strategies available to I/O practitioners for the purpose of validation. For
example, there is construct validity, criterion related validity, content related validity, transport of
validity, meta analytic validation evidence, or consortium studies, among others (Scott Reynolds,
2010). However, the two most used methods (and therefore most researched) are criterion related and
content orientated strategies (Scott Reynolds, 2010).
Evidence for criterion related validity is generally obtained by demonstrating a relationship between
the predictor and criteria (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology [SIOP], 2003). The
predictor is the results gathered from a selection procedure (e.g. test scores), and criteria ... Show more

For example, although criterion related validity provides empirical evidence, it may produce errors if
too small of a sample is used, and in situation like this it may be better to use content related
validation. Another consideration, that most organizations would likely want to know, is what the
return on investment is when using validation methods (Scott Reynolds, 2010). Attention to legal and
regulatory rules would have to be taken into account when choosing the right validation strategy too.
McPhail and Stelly (as cited by Scott Reynolds, 2010) have this to say about choosing a validation
strategy, From an applied perspective, the type and amount of validation research undertaken in a
given application may in part be a function of the value of such research based on relative costs and
benefits (p. 703). Therefore, costs (both actual and potential) associated with various validation
strategies would need to be weighed against the benefits such strategies would provide. Ultimately,
knowing what is needed and what needs to be obtained from a validation strategy, as well as the
situational constraints involved, will help to guide an I/O practitioner when choosing a validation

The Origins Of The Origin Of Mathematics
The Origins of Mathematics
The Origins When and where is the origins of mathematics?
The origins of mathematics accompanied the evolution of social systems in many ways. The social
development of any society requires some sort of calculation and number system. In the same way, the
arithmetic operations are essential for the development and interaction between people. Words that
describe numbers and operations that enable calculations are the basis for survival. The need to count
how many animals where available for hunting, and the number of people that needed to be feed are
just examples of the needs faced by a pre historic man. All this require the need to develop words,
sounds, or gestures that could be used to describe the numbers of objects and animals, also they had to
develop a type of a counting system that could have allowed them to make the most basic
mathematical operations, for example equal sharing of food. That can explain why the need of
mathematics was so important just from the beginning of times, and how it has been the binding
element that kept the early humans together and help them to coexist and develop into what we are
today. Since the invention of a numbers and counting systems occurred when people started to live
together and formed the first human society, mathematical scenes was the link that helped them to for
societies and to develop a type of communication system and in a way help them to establish the first
trading system which in turn,

In Flanders Fields
We are the Dead. Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and
now we lie, In Flanders fields. This is quote from John McCrae s influential poem about the fallen
soldiers who fought in World War 1. After McCrae, who was a physician in the war, witnessed his
friend Alexis Helmer die in combat, John was inspired to write a poem which recognized the soldiers
who fought at the Second Battle of Ypres. This quote from McCrae s poem is a very poignant and
compelling message which I believe effectively summarizes the tone and main idea of In Flanders
Fields. I feel that through the poem, McCrae sought to show the more human and truthful side of
soldiers who died in war. John s statement we, lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, exhibits the softer,
more sympathetic aspect of the soldiers who lost their lives in battle. McCrae also narrates his poem
through the eyes of the deceased, by saying We are the Dead, to firmly grab the viewers attention and
allow them to see a more personal side of the tragedy that occurred during the Second Battle of Ypres.

Similarities Between The Tempest And Frankenstein
Affection blossoms day by day for most relationships, but not all. While some people remain joyful
and pleased in their relationships, Frankenstein and his creature in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and
Prospero and Caliban in The Tempest by Shakespeare once showed these characteristics, but conflicts
began to grow that turned into complete hatred. As a result of the disputes, it identified how the
creators are similar, how the creation of the creatures are comparable, and how the relationships
between the creator and the creature in each story are related.
To start off, Frankenstein and Prospero share many unique qualities within their stories. Frankenstein
made his creature to be powerful amongst all other human beings. Nonetheless, he gave ... Show more

The creature responded to Dr. Frankenstein and said, I was benevolent and good; misery made me a
fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous. Frankenstein replied, Begone! I will not hear
you. There can be no community between you and me; we are enemies. Begone, or let us try our
strength in a fight, in which one must fall. The creature states that misery caused him to be furious, but
the goodness inside him never went away when it comes to Dr. Frankenstein. On the other hand, the
creator said that they are no longer acquaintances, but rather rivals. The same scenario can be said for
Prospero and Caliban. Caliban reacted to Prospero s evil doings by using his knowledge against him.
Caliban s maleficent tone claimed, Which first was mine own king, and here you sty me... You taught
me language, and my profit on t Is I know how to curse. The red plague rid you For learning me your
language! He mentions that Prospero was once his king, which he had great respect for. Nevertheless,
Caliban uses his intelligence taught from Prospero as both revenge and satisfaction.
In conclusion, Frankenstein s and Prospero s similarities and the creation of the creature s, in
Frankenstein, and Caliban s, in The Tempest, similarities all affect the inclusive relationships as a
whole between creator and creature. Their companionship began as joyous and solicitous, but the
creators turned into vile characters, opposing their own partners that they once cared for

Rhetorical Analysis Woman
In his artwork Woman in the Blue Veil (La femme au voile bleu), Pablo Picasso appropriated different
aspects of classical Greek art and borrowed various elements from Greco roman pieces like Grave
Naiskos of a Seated Woman with Two Standing Women. Woman in the Blue Veil was most likely
inspired by Greco roman artifacts like Grave Naiskos of a Seated Woman with Two Standing Women.
According to the didactic panel of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in the Picasso and Rivera
exhibit Woman in the Blue Veil was painted near the end of Picasso s neo classical period (1921 23)
and borrows compositional elements from ancient Greek funerary art. The panel goes on to describe

This fascination can be seen the sculptural quality of his painting, which can be compared to a style
similar to Greek funerary art. The figure in the painting is wearing traditional ancient Greek tunic, and
the head covering that the woman wears is similar to those worn as an ancient Roman custom. Like
traditional Greco roman art, Picasso focuses a lot of attention on the face of the figure, while still
giving a lot of detail to the clothing. In Picasso s piece there are many curved lines, which seem to
suggest a sense of comfort and ease, while the horizontal lines in the piece suggest a distance and
calm. All of these feeling would appeal to the people who had witnessed the devastations of the war
only several years before the painting was made. The long continuous lines guides the viewer s eye in
certain directions, and keeps the viewer interested. The shapes in Woman in the Blue Veil mostly
consist of round shapes like ovals, which represent a kind of continuous movement. The triangles
created by the woman s clothing and her nose leads the eye in an upward movement, and created

Are People Living In American Equal Today
Are all people living in American equal today? The big question that nowadays Americans ask to
themselves. People still are not created equal. Despite being in the twenty first century is still seen
racism and feminism. America has a percentage of racist people, and they have black people and do

Trump said When Mexico sends its people, they re not sending their best. ... They re sending people

Analysis Of The Yellow Wall-Paper And The Fall Of The...
Can architecture truly shape the mental healths of an individual? This question has been brought into
light from the novels The Yellow Wall Paper and The Fall of the House of Usher. The relationship of
the main character s mental health to the architecture of the setting in both novels shows a
deterioration in character health. The Yellow Wallpaper novel is taken place in a nursery and the

The Third Largest Coal Ash Spill
The third largest coal ash spill in United States history has left some citizens in North Carolina fearing
their water is not safe to drink. This fear is a result of anywhere between 50,000 and 82,000 tons of
coal ash and up to twenty seven million gallons of contaminated water being dumped into the Dan
River in Eden, North Carolina on February 2, 2014. The spill was caused by a busted storm drain pipe
that ran under an unlined coal ash pond at Duke Energy s Dan River Combined Cycle Station ( Duke
Energy s Grievous ). Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal for energy and contains substances such
as arsenic, lead, and mercury. These toxic chemicals are not only harmful to the environment but to
the human population as well (Christian). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Listed below are the proposed draft risk classifications for each facility in North Carolina as of
December 2015.
Draft Proposed Impoundment Classifications. DEQ. 31 Dec. 2015. Web. 8 Apr. 2016.
The coal ash that is buried underground still has the potential to seep into the neighboring water
supply. Also, the high risk ponds will not be evacuated until 2019 and the low intermediate risk ponds
as late as 2029. Subsequently, there will still be run off from these ponds polluting fresh water for the
time being ( House, Senate Approve ). This settlement is not a win for residents surrounding these
impoundments. Preventing seepage from coal ash ponds and completely removing the coal ashes
away from fresh water is the only way North Carolinians will feel safe about their drinking water, no
matter the proposed risk classification.
For instance, the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) handed out a Clean Water Act
permit to the Duke Energy Riverbend coal ash site on Mountain Island Lake on the Catawba River
which supplies water for Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Mount Holly, and Gastonia. This pollution
discharge permit is supposed to protect Mountain Island Lake from harmful coal ash pollution coming
out of the Duke Energy s Riverbend facility. In 2015, Duke Energy pleaded guilty to criminal coal ash
pollution and was issued to remove the coal ash pond at Riverbend. The coal ash lagoons are

Compare And Contrast The American Revolutions
Over a hundred years ago countries from the new world were under the control of big wealthy
kingdoms from Europe. Then those countries decided that they didn t want those kingdoms to rule
over them and started revolutions to try and win independence. As a result we have the countries of
the South America. Their revolutions were both similar and different.
The Mexican Revolution was started by Francisco Madero. Along with him were other leaders such as
Pascual Orozco, Francisco Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata. The Mexican revolution was caused
because people were getting tired of Porfirio Diaz s dictatorship and the lower class was tired of the
poor working conditions and low wages. Its main purpose was to establish a democratic ... Show more

The revolution was meant to defeat the uprising liberal government (called the Cortes) in Portugal.
Napoleon s invasion caused political and social unrest and they wanted to end colonial rule through
mercantilism. After the revolution they were granted independence and Dom Pedro I was named
emperor.
The Argentine revolution, also known as the May revolution, was caused by the loss of authority of
the Spanish crown and the influence of the French Revolution and US independence. An important
leader of the revolution was Manuel Belgrano who became a general to the troops that achieved the
Argentine declaration of independence. It s motive was to remove the viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo
Cisneros, who was the representative of the Spanish Crown in Argentina, and dissolve the Viceroyalty
of Rio de la Silver.
Similarities that they all had was that their countries had poor working conditions and the lower class
wanted better lives. Also the Mexicans and Argentinians disliked their government leaders. And once
they all saw the success of the United States and the French Revolution they wanted to try and also get
freedom from their mother

How Bodybuilding Has Changed Over Time
Bodybuilding is a form of sport that aims to make the body to be in a great physical condition and also
enhance health. The sport makes both the body and the mind fit and thus, eliminate common health
conditions associated with living sedentary lifestyles. Bodybuilding entails extreme body workout and
training as well as healthy eating to attain the desired physique (Elledge 33). It is believed to decrease
risk factors associated with the development of coronary heart diseases. Through taking part in aerobic
exercises and weight training, people have higher chances of lessening and managing high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. The process also makes the body muscles strong and flexible
(Cross 41). Bodybuilding has come of ages and has evolved intensively. Its history dates back to late
1800s but the dynamics and objectives of the sport have changed over time. The focus is to analyze
bodybuilding sport of the ancient times and comparing it to the nature of the sport today in terms of
priorities and objectives.
Bodybuilding dates back to the 19th century specifically 1890s when weight training commenced in
the world. The practice took place in Greece and Egypt where people lifted stones purposely to have
huge muscles and physique bodies. However, as an entertaining sport, bodybuilding developed in ...

Theme Of Trifles And A Doll House
The plot of both Susan Glaspell s Trifles and Henrik Ibsen s A Doll House provides scope for a few
scenes that lack the presence of all or any men. These scenes, consisting of communication between
the female characters, assist in developing the theme of women openly defying the fact that the society
they live in is primarily run by men. All the power and authority in their society, no matter the
situation, belongs to the men while the women are simply excluded. The women in these plays defy
the norms set by society and manage to evade the expectations of their patriarchal societies. In Trifles ,
a division between the two sexes is quickly established as the men enter the house and huddle by the
stove while the women remain still by the door. As the men start their detective work the women
wander around the house to gather some of Mrs. Wright s belongings. While searching for her
belongings, the women discover an empty birdcage and find a dead bird in a pretty box (Glaspell, 956)
inside of Mrs. Wright s sewing basket. Mrs. Hale jumps at the sight of the bird s neck and Mrs. Peters
points out how somebody wrung its neck (Glaspell, 957) similar to the way Mr. Wright was found
earlier. Mrs. Wright s murder of her husband can be seen as an act of feminine revolt against the male
dominated society. Another example of women defying against patriarchy is of Mrs. Hale and Mrs.
Peters hiding the evidence that can prove Mrs. Wright to be guilty of her husband s murder. Before
their departure from the Wright s house, as the men are returning, the sheriff suggests that the county
attorney take a look through the items Mrs. Peters had collected for Mrs. Wright. However, he decides
that anything collected by the women cannot have much significance and overlooks it. His assumption
that the women would have came forward if they saw any possible evidence costs him. The sheriff s
belief is that women derive their identity solely from their relationships with men; the dominant
gender.
The sheriff and the county attorney also joke about how Mrs. Peters is basically married to the law
(Glaspell, 959) suggesting that she would not hide anything because she is a devoted follower of the
law. Ironically, she had concealed

1. Knowledge: Do you consider Pinterest a form of disruptive or sustaining technology?
Disruptive technology is a new way of doing something that initially does not meet the needs of
existing customers. This type of technology tends to open new markets and destroy old ones. While, a
sustaining technology produces an improved product that customers are eager to buy. This technology
provides better, faster and cheaper products on established markets.
I think that Pinterest is a sustaining technology. Indeed, it s a social network like Facebook or twitter

Analysis Of Severus Snape
Severus Snape is one of the most beloved, and yet most despised, characters in the history of
literature. Appearing in the famed novel and movie series, Harry Potter, Snape has touched, warmed,
and broken people s hearts since the summer of 1997. When readers first met Snape in Harry Potter
and the Philosopher s Stone, he was hated and feared as the teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked
nose, and sallow skin. However, it is not until the series nears its end in Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows, that the readers learn that Severus Snape was cruel and brutal for many reasons. One of the
most controversial topics in literature is whether Snape was a villain or a hero. In agreement with the
latter, I believe that Snape was a hero because he was selfless and brave. Severus Snape, although
appearing ghastly and gruesome, was extremely selfless. The way he treated Harry Potter and a
number of other students made him hated and disliked by many. Snape, a strict and feared teacher,
appeared to be a very unpleasant person. However, not everything is what it seems. Behind the
monster, was a selfless man who would do anything for love. In Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows, the readers learn that Snape did everything in his power to shield Harry from Lord
Voldemort. After his death on the second of May in 1998, Snape s memories were transported via tear
yo the Pensieve, which animates one s memories. His memories revealed that he loved Harry Potter s
mother, Lily. He and Lily

Libanus Father
On the mother s side, the difference in upbringing also played a role in the two men s attachment
toward their mothers. Both men had fathers who faced an early death. Libanius mother was quite
lenient in raising her children: My mother was a nice woman and feared the dishonesty of guardians
and the litigation which would inevitably arise with them, and so she herself set out to be all in all to
us. In general, she succeeded very well by dint of her exertions, but though she paid out fees to
schoolmasters for us, she did not have the heart to get annoyed with her sleepyhead of a son, for she
thought it was a loving mother s part never never to upset her child.
Libanius mother was hands on. In fear and suspicion of other guardians, she was the type of woman
who believed she could do things on her own. She was all in all to Libanius, which could be read
either she took on all the roles as both father and mother or she was everything her children. Being
independent, was a trait Libanius acquired from his mother. This passage from Libanius shows that his
mother was quite over protective. Which again, may have been a push factor for Libanius who sought
a life that allowed him to get away from the protection of his mother. And her lenience, only made it
easier for him to break away. Saying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

make it important. The sun plays significant roles in ecosystem functioning of photosynthesis. In this

Health Care Trends and Perceptions Regarding the Insurance...
Health Care
Determine what correlations can be made regarding the increase in population and the public
perception of the health insurance system. Be sure to present your thoughts in a credible manner that
is non offensive yet factual.
The population has been steadily increasing in the United States since its founding. For a long period
the US led the industrialized world in its fertility rate however, though this rate has slowed in recent
generations with Americans having few babies per household, immigration into the US has become
one of the main drivers of the expanding population (Wang, 2013). Furthermore, the population is also
steadily aging and therefore often requires more in terms of health care services. All of these factors
contribute to a trend in which health care accessibility is becoming more and more limited in all types
of coverage s. For example, those who have private health insurance may be faced with higher out of
pocket costs and limited services to attempt to control costs while those without private insurance
could be potentially excluded from service all together. One study found that in 2007 nearly two thirds
of all bankruptcies were related to medical expenses; a trend that has been rapidly increasing since the
turn of the century (McCarthy, 2009). It is reasonable to believe that such trends correlate to a
negative perception of the health insurance system.
Consider the health trends in the U.S. over the last two decades and make some

Conflict Between Principles And Power In Captain America
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a movie attempting to understand the confusing and
contradictory world that is modern America s political and social order. It is a movie that is based
upon the modern era and yet somehow timeless. It is a movie that is firmly rooted in the Fantasy/ Sci
Fi genre with super soldiers, flying aircraft carriers, and a bevy of comic book characters. It is also a
movie which perfectly encapsulates the chaotic and bewildering nature of the war on terror and the
surveillance state. Though it is a movie set entirely in the United States and primarily is focused on
domestic policy, the primary conflict is one applying to foreign policy as well and this is the conflict
between principles and power, between survival and ideals. Though the movie may initially seem to
favor principles over power, upon a closer look the movie focuses a great deal on power and draws
greatly on Realist theory for its worldview.
The axis of the movie is the reveal to Captain America that S.H.I.E.L.D., the multinational defense
organization he works for, is developing the technology to launch preemptive strikes. This disturbs the
physical manifestation of American values and leads him to confront S.H.I.E.L.D s director Nicholas
J. Fury. The ensuing argument perfectly encapsulates the conflict between principles and power in
post 9 11 America. When it is pointed out he had done some morally questionable actions during
WWII Captain America responds yeah we compromised.

Essay on Medea and Nietzsche s Will to Power
Medea and Nietzsche s Will to Power
When Medea kills her children, audiences react with shock and horror. Any sympathy viewers have
built for the woman is, in the words of Elizabeth Vandiver, undercut by this act (15). Since Medea is
the protagonist, we question why Euripides chose to make her a child murderer. Most scholars agree
that he invented this part of the myth. He also lessened her role as witch by drawing attention to her
human qualities. This only highlights the infanticide (14) because we cannot excuse her ruthless act as
monstrous and non human. However, Medea remains very human until after she kills her sons.
Appearing at the end of the play in the deus ex machina, she takes over not only the position but also

In doing so, she changes from a suicidal victim into an Übermensch, Nietzsche s Superman, able to
survive the tragic events of the play. Analyzing Medea s actions using the Nietzschean approach helps
explain why Euripides may have not only made her a child murderer but also why he placed her in
such a lofty position at the end of the play, apparently escaping any justice imposed from an external
force or entity.
In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche explained Greek culture as a battle between what he called the
Apollonian and Dionysian forces (Campbell 334). The Apollonian, named after the god Apollo, is
order, lawfulness, perfect form, clarity, precision, self control, and individuation (Schact). Fiona
Jenkins describes it as an art of the visible: it is linked to the power of dreams, illusion . . . Through
the Apollonian moment of art the individual is reconstituted as a product of his own dream. Joseph
Campbell adds that Apollo is the god of prophecy, light, and the sky (336). He is also associated with
purification of guilt and error (Fagles 17).
The Dionysian, named for Dionysus, is marked by chaos, drunkenness, madness, and instinctive
emotions (Kreis, Nietzsche, Dionysus and Apollo ). It is excess, dismemberment, and rebirth; the dark,
earth bound force of suffering (Jenkins). The Dionysian alienates figures from social, political, and
familial bonds, destroying those who refuse to succumb to its power (McClure). Nietzsche says that

Issues Surrounding The Legalization Of Euthanasia
This essay will critically discuss slippery slope arguments with reference to the issues surrounding the
legalization of euthanasia. Firstly, the foundations of a slippery slope argument will be discussed,
along with the usual fallacious nature of this type of argument, also to be discussed, is if slippery slope
arguments ever provide good reasons for accepting their conclusions. Secondly, euthanasia will be
introduced and discussed, this will be done using an example of a slippery slope argument by John
Keown from his book Euthanasia, ethics and public policy: and argument against legalization. From
this example, the morality of euthanasia will be discussed as to whether slippery slope arguments
show that euthanasia is immoral. Lastly, euthanasia will be discussed with reference utilitarianism,
and if euthanasia would potentially be viewed as a good or moral option by utilitarian theory or if it
would be viewed as immoral. Slippery slope arguments are often used to argue that if we allow
something to become legal we will be stepping onto the slippery slope to allowing something viewed
as morally wrong to also become legal. These arguments are used often within society, although most
of the time they are used in a casual manner and the distance between point A and B is so large they
are not taken seriously, (Spielthenner, 2010; Jefferson, 2014). For that reason slippery slope arguments
as a general idea are not considered to be good logical arguments. So, slippery slope

Comparing Joyce Carol Oates The Lady With The Pet Dog
In Joyce Carol Oates short story The Lady with the Pet Dog, Oates takes Anton Chekhov s characters
and transports them to the 1970s, deciding to retell their story through the lens of the modernized
female protagonist, Anna. While this story is obviously different from its original source of
inspiration, in this paper I ve chosen to focus on the similarities that have slight twists in Oates
retelling. I will firstly look at the structure of the two tales. In Oates version, just as in Chekhov s, the
structure is cyclical. The beginning of the story is set at a midpoint, during a concert where Anna
meets the stranger or her new lover. As the story progresses, it s interesting how Oates returns to the
concert scene twice, choosing

Racial Barriers In Baseball
Introduction Over the first few decades after the breaking of the racial barrier in baseball by Jackie
Robinson the number of African American in professional baseball stayed on a rise, unfortunately the
numbers over the most recent decades have been going the opposite direction. The color barrier was
broken in Major League Baseball (MLB) by Robinson on April 15, 1947 when he was called to play
for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson broke way for African Americans in baseball and they took
advantage of it as the number increased every year after. The purpose of this study is to find out why
the percentage of African Americans playing in the MLB has been on a steady decline the past few
decades. This percentage is dropping every year and there does not seem to be much of a change in the
future. While the numbers of African American professionals are much higher in football and
basketball and not at risk of dropping soon, what is it that is making baseballs number slowly
diminish. In this research I will examine numbers that have been put together and analyze interviews
that were performed with some professionals as well as highly accredited sports journalist. Although I
will focus on professional baseball I will also provide some insight on youth baseball to see what the
future may hold as far as the possibility of another increase in the percentage of African Americans in
the pros. As the years gone on there has also been an increase in latin baseball players throughout
professional baseball, as well as a decrease in whites. Some questions regarding the topic are what is
causing the decline in the percentage? What initiative is being taken by Major League Baseball to help
try to increase the percentages? What is significant about baseball compared to other sports (football,
basketball) that makes them different and less attractive to African American youth?
Literature Review In all articles read all journalist mentions the same thing. One major contributor to
the decline in African Americans in baseball is because of the cost to be good. Most of the highly
talented players now come from travel ball and not your stand park rec. league. To compete at the

The Popol Vuh, Inuit, and the Zulu people come from three very different continents, and yet they all

ways on how man was created. According to both cultures man was created by a higher power, for the
Popol Vuh it was the Gods Gucumatz and Huracán and for the Inuit it was the Raven, a being that
possessed powers of both man and bird and who could shape shift into both beings. The Gods

The reason why the Popol Vuh Gods Gucumatz and Huracán created mankind was so that they would
feed them. This differed in the Inuit creation story because it was the other way around. In the Inuit
creation story, the Raven feed man by bringing him berries but when that was not enough for him he
created animals out of clay for man to eat. The way the Zulu s differ from the Popol Vuh and the Inuit
is in the creation of women. The Popol Vuh and the Inuit both created their women but the Zulu
women were born from the reed of a Uthlanga plant and picked off by Unkulunkulu to roam earth.
The Zulu s are also the only ones that were created purely by a plant, they were not planted by
something, like the Raven in the Inuit creation story. Also, the Inuit s story seemed to care about the
animals because they were purposely placed far away from many so they would not be eaten, which is
understandable seeing that their creator is a raven. In the Popol Vuh creation story, the Gods
Gucumatz and Huracán punished the animals for speaking their names by having them kill and eat
each other. Although the Popol Vuh, Inuit and Zulu s share similarities on how the world was created,
it is the differences that separate them from one another and makes them

Sustainable development is a central concept within the environmental frame of thought and closely
linked to the problem of global warming. The term sustainable development refers to the use of
resources in a sustainable way, namely meeting the need of resources while not depleting them for
future generations. The concept of sustainable development contains both needs and limitations, i.e.
resources that are needed as well as technological and social limitations in responsible retrieval of
those resources (World Commission on Environment and Development, 41).
Achieving sustainable development is however a difficult problem that has many different aspects to
it. Recycling is a main component of sustainable development and an important aspect in a variety of
industries. Metal exists in almost every industry, whether it is the manufacture of steel beams,
precious metals for computers or copper cables for powerlines. Considering that metal recycling is a

The Goat Rodeo Session Analysis
Instruments are a diverse class of tools that can be made of anything from brass to ebony and range
from the size of a pencil to a smart car; musicians manipulate these tools to help convey an idea or
emotion to their audience. One of the most common instruments, the piano, is highly versatile and has
been played in nearly every genre: Rhythm and Blues, Orchestral, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Rap, and many
more. But the truth is, genres have set platforms of instruments associated with each one and many
musicians respect that by applying only those instruments to their respected genre. However,
performing artist Chris Thile is currently expanding what genres are associated with the Mandolin
through his music. Thile is diversifying the musical field by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Bluegrass incorporates sad slow Blues with twangy Country so, to begin with, it is a mixed genre;
however, Thile has gone far beyond incorporating two genres with his Mandolin. In 2013, Thile
released a solo album of Bach Sonatas played on Mandolin; being the first in existence, Thile s Bach
performance set a high standard with precise and accurate playing that mimicked how the sonatas
would traditionally be played on the piano. Not only did Thile prove that the Mandolin could handle
delicate and complex pieces through his rendition of the Bach sonatas, Chris Thile added the sonatas
to his repertoire and began incorporating other genres into the sonatas at his live performances.
Interpreting Bach sonatas, usually regarded as nearly perfect pieces, is a bold move in the world of
music but, Thile has manipulated the sonata s with eloquence through his proficiency on Mandolin. In
developing new musical techniques for the Mandolin, Thile has shown musicians that there is still
more to be discovered about instruments and musical compositions. Again, Thile contributes new
techniques to the musical field, helping to increase the diversity within it and setting a legacy for other
artists to follow

The European Union ( Eu ) And The Association Of Southeast...
EU ASEAN Dialogue relations
Executive Summary
The European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as two of the
most important regional organizations, have been interacting with each other on the economic,
political and cultural levels for more than four decades. In the 21st century, Asia has become the most
dynamic region in the global economy today. What is more, its regional security and stability has
grabbed increasing global attention as well.
From the EU perspective, after the financial crisis, economy in Europe has not fully recovered yet. For
EU, cooperating with Asia in economic sector is even more important since the latter has world s
largest population that buys almost a quarter of EU exports. Besides, EU has a strategic interest in
regional security in Asia. For example, the EU s interests would be hurt by tensions on the Korea
Peninsula or across the Taiwan Straits. Thirdly, nowadays, the US and Russia even other emerging
powers have further deepened their economic and political relationship with South East Asia. Under
this circumstances, the EU should speed up its pace strengthen its political and economic presence
across the region through comprehensive cooperation lest it would be marginalized by both Asia and
the US in the near future.
But in Asia, who is the most important partner of the EU? Except for China and Japan, ASEAN is
playing an increasingly important role in regional geopolitics and is proving to be a force for

Conflict in Colombia
Conflict in Colombia
Colombia is a Latin American country located in South America that has been ravaged by violence,
starvation, and large scale inequality between higher and lower classes. The chaos in Colombia has
been between rebel forces and the government and has lasted for over fifty years. These rebel forces
have fought to achieve their Liberalist lead goals of overthrowing the current democratic government
of Colombia and replacing it with a communist government. La Violencia was the main contributor to
the conflict between the resistance fighters of Colombia and the Colombian government that has
brought on violence and terror from the violent actions between the Liberal and Conservative parties
in the 1950 s. , which has directly brought on the violence and terror from the guerrilla groups.
In the mid 20th century, Colombian politics were dominated by the Liberal and Conservative parties
with fierce supporters that carried out the ideological and social differences into violence. Jorge
Eliecer Gaitan, a popular leader of the liberal party in Colombia launched social, economic, and
political modernising reforms in the 1930 s. Gaitan was in the process of converting Colombia into a
left wing country when he was assassinated right before an upcoming presidential election. Gaitan was
the favorite to represent the Liberal Party and was going to implement a more Liberal system in
Colombia. The reaction to this assassination produced an uncontrollable clash between

Charity Organization, The Giving Pledge Essay
1. Explain what The Giving Pledge is, and give an outline of the different attitudes presented in texts 2
and 3.
The Giving Pledge is an organization for rich American people. This charity organization consists of
many wealthy people like Bill Gates who is the co founder of Microsoft. Bill Gates launched this
campaign and all the members have different causes. Bill Gates wants to support improvements of the
medical difficulties, for example Bill Gates want to make vaccines reach everyone in the world.
All the members of the organization have agreed to donate at least 50% of their fortune to a charity.

In contrast to Peter Wilby, Jon Swartz does not see problem that the good marketing will sell, for
example Bill Gates will sell more on Windows operating systems . Jon Swartz is using some quotes
from Caroline Preston Nothing like this has happened before . Jon Swartz is very excited and he is
finding some good quotes to back up his claims. I almost get the impression that The Giving Pledge
has paid Jon Swartz to write this article. Jon Swartz also points out how much money they are
donating. Among those who didn t sign the pledge, some preferred anonymity, some were unavailable,
and others were not interested. Jon Swartz got some hatred for the people who did not sign the pledge;
this is also showing that it is biased and not neutral.
3. Taking your standpoint in one of the texts, argue for your own view of charitable giving.
I think that these people have giant hearts and they are really generous. It is unbelievable how rich
these men are. I think it s an excellent idea donating money to education and science. But taking Peter
Wilby points in consideration I see that it could be a business plan to create a better reputation and if u
has a great reputation you will sell more products or services. However it s a great idea to share your
wealth and through research you could get vaccines to all the people in the world. These charities are
great not only for science but also for innovation. All these Billion dollars could be

Equal Protection Clause In Civil Rights
The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution requiring that states guarantee the same
rights, privileges, and protections to all citizens. The Citizenship Clause granted citizenship to all
persons born or naturalized in the United States. The Due Process Clause declared that states may not
deny any person life, liberty or property, without due process of law . Equal Protection clause,
developed in 1868, states that no state shall deny to any person within its control the equal protection
of the laws . Everyone should be considered equal. No one should be treated differently because of the
way they live. Some may consider the equal protection clause to be the most important part of the
Constitution. This Amendment is important to civil rights because it states that all people should be

The idea of equal rights to all people under a government of laws was decreased by the existence of
slavery. There were the rejection of rights to some people because of race. Although, the Constitution
and Bill of Rights did not outlaw slavery and discrimination based on the race or gender. One of the
greatest early opponents of slavery and racial discrimination, Frederick Douglass, argued in a speech
(1852) that interpreted as it ought to be interpreted, the Constitution is a glorious liberty document.
The American concept of equal rights under law, however, was not clearly included in the Constitution
until after the Civil War; with passage of the three reconstruction era amendments. The 13th
Amendment (1865) banned slavery. The 14th Amendment (1865) guaranteed equal rights of
citizenship to all Americans, with the special meaning of protecting the rights of citizens shall not be

Essay On NAFTA
When countries have needs but not the capacity to satisfy those demands they enter into trading
through the exchange of surplus, produce to help their trading partners. Canada, Mexico, and the
United States created a treaty to establish a relationship that can benefit everyone in this process
known as NAFTA. This agreement has been criticized and has been blamed for hurting the US
economy more than helping. Although speculations may be misguided, I do not know much about this
agreement, and I must research multiple sources. This paper seeks to understand if NAFTA has
produced significant benefits for Canada, Mexico, and the United States economies.

The NAFTA Secretariat facilitates an informal resolution between the parties. If this doesn t work, it
establishes a panel to review the dispute helping all parties to avoid costly lawsuits in local courts.
These trade dispute protections apply to investors as well. Fifth, all NAFTA countries must respect
patents, trademarks, and copyrights. At the same time, the agreement ensures that these intellectual
property rights don t interfere with trade. Sixth, the deal allows business travelers easy access
throughout all three countries. NAFTA has two other agreements that update the original. The North
American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation supports the enforcement of environmental laws.
The North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation protects working conditions.
NAFTA increased the competitiveness of these three countries in the global marketplace. It allows
them to better compete with China and the European Union. In 2007, the EU replaced the United
States as the world s largest economy. In 2015, China replaced both. It took three U.S. presidents to
put NAFTA together. President Ronald Reagan kicked it off during his campaign in 1980. He wanted
to unify the North American market to better compete with the EU. In 1984, Congress passed the
Trade and Tariff Act. That gave the president fast track authority to negotiate free trade agreements. It
permits Congress only the ability to approve or disapprove. Congress

In this passage Leonid Fridman uses comparison and contrast to display one countries values to
another and how they are messed up. The author states how, in East Asia, a kid who studies hard is
lauded and held up as an example to other students , but in America that is not the case. Leonid
Fridman expresses how the anti intellectual values that pervade our society must be fought. Finally,
the author uses exemplification to show how hard it really is being a nerd in America. The author
mentions in his passage how, the average professional ballplayer is much more respected and better
paid than faculty members of the best universities . How can one be a nerd who studies hard and gets
good grades in a country where they are not as respected as the average ballplayer. Leonid Fridman
also mentions in his passage how kids who are nerds tend to become social outcasts. America needs to

  • 3. Why Do We Need Effective Classroom Management Teachers often wonder how to execute the ideal lesson, what structure should they adopt and how to ensure that all their students cooperate. What we need to recognise is what classroom management is and how much does student behavior factor? Why is it significant? What strategies does my mentor use to establish classroom management within the class? If we know the behaviour of our students, what do we need to do to ensure that effective classroom management is successfully acquired? All these questions need to be answered as they all link towards a successful lesson and student cooperation. During my two weeks of placement, I was placed at St Albans Primary School in a prep class. Considering that these students are at a young age, they are in a position where they are still developing skills and are in the process of becoming mature, therefore classroom management is crucial. In the class that I was in, students would often cause trouble with other members of the class, they are easily distracted and overall difficult to handle. Being that I am a pre service teacher, they often took advantage of me while I conducted the class, they would do the events explained above, and this is due to the lack of classroom management and my ability to maintain student behaviour. This led to students not understanding the task at hand and the overall focus of the lesson was not acquired. It is crucial that classroom management is maintained, without a theoretical approach to classroom ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Descriptive Essay Tennis Ad in yelled cole as he was getting ready to serve. The score was 5 4 we were up one set of the two kids from Wheeler. The game had been a very close match so far. The first two games going 6 4 and 4 6. The team that won this set would win the match. It was match point. We needed one more point to win the match. Cole then loaded up to serve the ball. The serve then came whizzing past my head. The kid from wheeler had a very good forehand and cole had served right to it. The kid from wheeler then returned the serve cross court back to Cole. Cole then placed a very nice lob into the back left corner of the court. This corner was also a forehand shot for the kid from wheeler. The kid from wheeler was trying extremely hard to cross all the way back over to the corner to get the ball that Cole had placed so tremendously. The kid had gotten to the ball just in time before it took its second bounce. He then weakly tried to return a lob back to Cole. Little did he know it was too short. He had hit the ball right at me at the net. The ball floated very slowly through the air. I then loaded up and got ready to hit an overhead shot. At the end of summer I had decided to try tennis for the first time. I had decided not to play soccer. I had played soccer since I was like 3. My mom had said many times Maybe you should try out tennis because you are not playing soccer? . I knew that I liked tennis but I had never really played it before. • 6. Sociological Perspectives Of Sociology And Its Impact On... Sociology is an important part of today s society as it is all around us and is in everything we do. Sociology is the study of, the behaviour of people within society. It helps us to understand how society works and how the impact of relationships and interactions between people influence society. Sociology is shown through relationships, cultures, class, religion, education and upbringing. Sociology has different sociological perspectives for example symbolic interactionism and functionalism. Symbolic interactionism studies individuals and small groups within society and how they behave, interact and believe about how society is what it is. Symbolic Interactionism was created by Herbert Blumer. He based symbolic interactionism on three things which were that people act on the meanings of things, social interactions build meanings and meanings depend and are modified by people interacting with each other. Through communication and language, symbols are provided to understand the world that we live in. Smoking is an example of symbolic interactionism as teenagers believe it is cool to smoke, even though it Is bad for you and could lead to killing you but they think it makes them look good in front of their friends. Functionalism is the belief of everyone in society sharing the same norms and values that get passed on through generations. Functionalists see society like a human body they believe that if one thing stops working then everything else will slowing stop working ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Disadvantages Of Intelligence Led Policing In preparation for my debate on the topics of intelligence led policing and Compstat policing, I have discovered the many advantages and disadvantages of using intelligence led policing and Compstat policing. According to Carter Carter (2009), intelligence led policing is the collection of and analysis of data relating to crime, used by law enforcement in developing tactical responses to threats and/or strategic planning related to emerging changing threats (p. 317). When applied correctly, intelligence led policing is a tool used for information sharing in identifying threats and developing responses to prevent those threats from reaching fruition (Carter, 2011). One of the advantages of using intelligence led policing is its incorporation of data analysts. The role of the data analyst in the context of intelligence led policing allows them to take specially trained analysts to take raw data from information found in reports and translate it into useful information for the officers, allowing the police to deploy resources more effectively and efficiently (Griffiths, 2016). Another advantage is its application through preventative and predictive policing (proactive policing), in which law enforcement take data and identify crucial variables such as terrorism or the emergence of criminal organizations, in hopes of stopping the problem at its roots (Carter, 2011). Terrorism is especially important and emphasized after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Why Is Risk Taking Important From the beginning of mankind to our modern day society, individuals have a tendency to gape at individuals who put a lot on the line to achieve a desired goal. Whether it be a Marvel superhero to our local firemen, individuals who put their well being on the line are placed in a high stature in the eyes of many. We gravitate to be just like these individuals and are ashamed of becoming viewed as a coward. This idea is prevalent in people of all ages, backgrounds, and gender and will continue to motivate us to attain glory by means of taking risks. People start taking risks from the moment you were born. Babies take the risk that their caregivers will provide them the right nourishment to prosper. In infants, their first step to walking involved them taking the risk of falling down. Children take risks of losing whenever they play a game of competition. High school students take risks when they take standardized exams such as the SAT which serves as a measuring stick between themselves and their peers. Adults who apply for a job take the risk of not getting accepted or eventually fired. Old people take the risk of getting up everyday and face the possibility of injuring their frail bodies. One of the most risky concept in our modern day world is sports. Sports attract a huge audiences and unite people of all backgrounds. However, if you watch sports, you likely have a favorite team. • 11. Essay about The Forbidding House It was a cold winter s night. The wind was whistling through the bare branches of the trees. The dead leaves were dancing noisily across pavements and all was still. That night I was walking down Old St.Paul s Road when the clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak tree. I had noticed that almost all of the houses on this abandoned street were too badly damaged for us to take shelter in, except for one. Lightning split the night sky without a sound, illuminating the skeletal trees outside. The old Victorian house shook to its very foundations as the peal of thunder rumbled hatefully across the shimmering, tempestuous lake. Should I stay under the tree ... I slowly got up and my mind was focused on the thing I had seen upstairs. I then felt a cold breeze that made my bones shiver and hair stand up on end. A giant rat scampered across the floor; it s beady eyes glowed red in the flicker of the lantern light. It hissed at me. I dropped my lantern. Suddenly, I was plunged into utter darkness. I took several deep breaths to calm my trembling body and finished my trek up the stairs. Vivid flashes of lightning illuminated the attic. A vase lay in pieces in front of the broken window. Well, at least I knew what had caused the crash, I mused to myself. I found an old threadbare cloak hanging near the window. I now realised that is wasn t a person who I had seen but simply an old cloak. I suddenly tripped over a large box as I walked. The trunk wasn t locked, but age had rusted it shut. I gripped the top and pulled with all of my strength. The trunk protested, but finally gave in. Another rat jumped up at me. I clenched the rat s tail and threw it away from me. • 12. A Summary Of Content-Related Validity There are a variety of strategies available to I/O practitioners for the purpose of validation. For example, there is construct validity, criterion related validity, content related validity, transport of validity, meta analytic validation evidence, or consortium studies, among others (Scott Reynolds, 2010). However, the two most used methods (and therefore most researched) are criterion related and content orientated strategies (Scott Reynolds, 2010). Evidence for criterion related validity is generally obtained by demonstrating a relationship between the predictor and criteria (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology [SIOP], 2003). The predictor is the results gathered from a selection procedure (e.g. test scores), and criteria ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, although criterion related validity provides empirical evidence, it may produce errors if too small of a sample is used, and in situation like this it may be better to use content related validation. Another consideration, that most organizations would likely want to know, is what the return on investment is when using validation methods (Scott Reynolds, 2010). Attention to legal and regulatory rules would have to be taken into account when choosing the right validation strategy too. McPhail and Stelly (as cited by Scott Reynolds, 2010) have this to say about choosing a validation strategy, From an applied perspective, the type and amount of validation research undertaken in a given application may in part be a function of the value of such research based on relative costs and benefits (p. 703). Therefore, costs (both actual and potential) associated with various validation strategies would need to be weighed against the benefits such strategies would provide. Ultimately, knowing what is needed and what needs to be obtained from a validation strategy, as well as the situational constraints involved, will help to guide an I/O practitioner when choosing a validation ... • 13. The Origins Of The Origin Of Mathematics The Origins of Mathematics The Origins When and where is the origins of mathematics? The origins of mathematics accompanied the evolution of social systems in many ways. The social development of any society requires some sort of calculation and number system. In the same way, the arithmetic operations are essential for the development and interaction between people. Words that describe numbers and operations that enable calculations are the basis for survival. The need to count how many animals where available for hunting, and the number of people that needed to be feed are just examples of the needs faced by a pre historic man. All this require the need to develop words, sounds, or gestures that could be used to describe the numbers of objects and animals, also they had to develop a type of a counting system that could have allowed them to make the most basic mathematical operations, for example equal sharing of food. That can explain why the need of mathematics was so important just from the beginning of times, and how it has been the binding element that kept the early humans together and help them to coexist and develop into what we are today. Since the invention of a numbers and counting systems occurred when people started to live together and formed the first human society, mathematical scenes was the link that helped them to for societies and to develop a type of communication system and in a way help them to establish the first trading system which in turn, ... This is quote from John McCrae s influential poem about the fallen soldiers who fought in World War 1. After McCrae, who was a physician in the war, witnessed his friend Alexis Helmer die in combat, John was inspired to write a poem which recognized the soldiers who fought at the Second Battle of Ypres. This quote from McCrae s poem is a very poignant and compelling message which I believe effectively summarizes the tone and main idea of In Flanders Fields. I feel that through the poem, McCrae sought to show the more human and truthful side of soldiers who died in war. John s statement we, lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, exhibits the softer, more sympathetic aspect of the soldiers who lost their lives in battle. McCrae also narrates his poem through the eyes of the deceased, by saying We are the Dead, to firmly grab the viewers attention and allow them to see a more personal side of the tragedy that occurred during the Second Battle of Ypres. ... While some people remain joyful and pleased in their relationships, Frankenstein and his creature in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Prospero and Caliban in The Tempest by Shakespeare once showed these characteristics, but conflicts began to grow that turned into complete hatred. As a result of the disputes, it identified how the creators are similar, how the creation of the creatures are comparable, and how the relationships between the creator and the creature in each story are related. The creature states that misery caused him to be furious, but the goodness inside him never went away when it comes to Dr. Frankenstein. On the other hand, the creator said that they are no longer acquaintances, but rather rivals. The same scenario can be said for Prospero and Caliban. Caliban reacted to Prospero s evil doings by using his knowledge against him. Caliban s maleficent tone claimed, Which first was mine own king, and here you sty me... Rhetorical Analysis Woman In his artwork Woman in the Blue Veil (La femme au voile bleu), Pablo Picasso appropriated different aspects of classical Greek art and borrowed various elements from Greco roman pieces like Grave Naiskos of a Seated Woman with Two Standing Women. Woman in the Blue Veil was most likely inspired by Greco roman artifacts like Grave Naiskos of a Seated Woman with Two Standing Women. According to the didactic panel of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in the Picasso and Rivera exhibit Woman in the Blue Veil was painted near the end of Picasso s neo classical period (1921 23) and borrows compositional elements from ancient Greek funerary art. This fascination can be seen the sculptural quality of his painting, which can be compared to a style similar to Greek funerary art. The figure in the painting is wearing traditional ancient Greek tunic, and the head covering that the woman wears is similar to those worn as an ancient Roman custom. Like traditional Greco roman art, Picasso focuses a lot of attention on the face of the figure, while still giving a lot of detail to the clothing. In Picasso s piece there are many curved lines, which seem to suggest a sense of comfort and ease, while the horizontal lines in the piece suggest a distance and calm. All of these feeling would appeal to the people who had witnessed the devastations of the war only several years before the painting was made. The long continuous lines guides the viewer s eye in certain directions, and keeps the viewer interested. The shapes in Woman in the Blue Veil mostly consist of round shapes like ovals, which represent a kind of continuous movement. This fear is a result of anywhere between 50,000 and 82,000 tons of coal ash and up to twenty seven million gallons of contaminated water being dumped into the Dan River in Eden, North Carolina on February 2, 2014. The spill was caused by a busted storm drain pipe that ran under an unlined coal ash pond at Duke Energy s Dan River Combined Cycle Station ( Duke Energy s Grievous ). • 27. Theme Of Trifles And A Doll House The plot of both Susan Glaspell s Trifles and Henrik Ibsen s A Doll House provides scope for a few scenes that lack the presence of all or any men. These scenes, consisting of communication between the female characters, assist in developing the theme of women openly defying the fact that the society they live in is primarily run by men. All the power and authority in their society, no matter the situation, belongs to the men while the women are simply excluded. The women in these plays defy the norms set by society and manage to evade the expectations of their patriarchal societies. In Trifles , a division between the two sexes is quickly established as the men enter the house and huddle by the stove while the women remain still by the door. As the men start their detective work the women wander around the house to gather some of Mrs. Wright s belongings. While searching for her belongings, the women discover an empty birdcage and find a dead bird in a pretty box (Glaspell, 956) inside of Mrs. Wright s sewing basket. Mrs. Hale jumps at the sight of the bird s neck and Mrs. Peters points out how somebody wrung its neck (Glaspell, 957) similar to the way Mr. Wright was found earlier. Mrs. Wright s murder of her husband can be seen as an act of feminine revolt against the male dominated society. Another example of women defying against patriarchy is of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters hiding the evidence that can prove Mrs. Wright to be guilty of her husband s murder. Before their departure from the Wright s house, as the men are returning, the sheriff suggests that the county attorney take a look through the items Mrs. Peters had collected for Mrs. Wright. However, he decides that anything collected by the women cannot have much significance and overlooks it. His assumption that the women would have came forward if they saw any possible evidence costs him. The sheriff s belief is that women derive their identity solely from their relationships with men; the dominant gender. The sheriff and the county attorney also joke about how Mrs. Peters is basically married to the law (Glaspell, 959) suggesting that she would not hide anything because she is a devoted follower of the law. Appearing in the famed novel and movie series, Harry Potter, Snape has touched, warmed, and broken people s hearts since the summer of 1997. When readers first met Snape in Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone, he was hated and feared as the teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and sallow skin. However, it is not until the series nears its end in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, that the readers learn that Severus Snape was cruel and brutal for many reasons. One of the most controversial topics in literature is whether Snape was a villain or a hero. In agreement with the latter, I believe that Snape was a hero because he was selfless and brave. Severus Snape, although appearing ghastly and gruesome, was extremely selfless. The way he treated Harry Potter and a number of other students made him hated and disliked by many. Snape, a strict and feared teacher, appeared to be a very unpleasant person. However, not everything is what it seems. Behind the monster, was a selfless man who would do anything for love. • 33. Health Care Trends and Perceptions Regarding the Insurance... Health Care Determine what correlations can be made regarding the increase in population and the public perception of the health insurance system. Be sure to present your thoughts in a credible manner that is non offensive yet factual. The population has been steadily increasing in the United States since its founding. For a long period the US led the industrialized world in its fertility rate however, though this rate has slowed in recent generations with Americans having few babies per household, immigration into the US has become one of the main drivers of the expanding population (Wang, 2013). Furthermore, the population is also steadily aging and therefore often requires more in terms of health care services. All of these factors contribute to a trend in which health care accessibility is becoming more and more limited in all types of coverage s. For example, those who have private health insurance may be faced with higher out of pocket costs and limited services to attempt to control costs while those without private insurance could be potentially excluded from service all together. One study found that in 2007 nearly two thirds of all bankruptcies were related to medical expenses; a trend that has been rapidly increasing since the turn of the century (McCarthy, 2009). It is reasonable to believe that such trends correlate to a negative perception of the health insurance system. Consider the health trends in the U.S. over the last two decades and make some ... Conflict Between Principles And Power In Captain America Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a movie attempting to understand the confusing and contradictory world that is modern America s political and social order. It is a movie that is based upon the modern era and yet somehow timeless. It is a movie that is firmly rooted in the Fantasy/ Sci Fi genre with super soldiers, flying aircraft carriers, and a bevy of comic book characters. It is also a movie which perfectly encapsulates the chaotic and bewildering nature of the war on terror and the surveillance state. Though it is a movie set entirely in the United States and primarily is focused on domestic policy, the primary conflict is one applying to foreign policy as well and this is the conflict between principles and power, between survival and ideals. Though the movie may initially seem to favor principles over power, upon a closer look the movie focuses a great deal on power and draws greatly on Realist theory for its worldview. The axis of the movie is the reveal to Captain America that S.H.I.E.L.D., the multinational defense organization he works for, is developing the technology to launch preemptive strikes. This disturbs the physical manifestation of American values and leads him to confront S.H.I.E.L.D s director Nicholas J. Fury. Any sympathy viewers have built for the woman is, in the words of Elizabeth Vandiver, undercut by this act (15). Since Medea is the protagonist, we question why Euripides chose to make her a child murderer. Most scholars agree that he invented this part of the myth. He also lessened her role as witch by drawing attention to her human qualities. This only highlights the infanticide (14) because we cannot excuse her ruthless act as monstrous and non human. However, Medea remains very human until after she kills her sons. Appearing at the end of the play in the deus ex machina, she takes over not only the position but also the ... Analyzing Medea s actions using the Nietzschean approach helps explain why Euripides may have not only made her a child murderer but also why he placed her in such a lofty position at the end of the play, apparently escaping any justice imposed from an external force or entity. In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche explained Greek culture as a battle between what he called the Apollonian and Dionysian forces (Campbell 334). The Apollonian, named after the god Apollo, is order, lawfulness, perfect form, clarity, precision, self control, and individuation (Schact). Fiona Jenkins describes it as an art of the visible: it is linked to the power of dreams, illusion . . . Through the Apollonian moment of art the individual is reconstituted as a product of his own dream. Joseph Campbell adds that Apollo is the god of prophecy, light, and the sky (336). The Dionysian, named for Dionysus, is marked by chaos, drunkenness, madness, and instinctive emotions (Kreis, Nietzsche, Dionysus and Apollo ). Secondly, euthanasia will be introduced and discussed, this will be done using an example of a slippery slope argument by John Keown from his book Euthanasia, ethics and public policy: and argument against legalization. From this example, the morality of euthanasia will be discussed as to whether slippery slope arguments show that euthanasia is immoral. Lastly, euthanasia will be discussed with reference utilitarianism, and if euthanasia would potentially be viewed as a good or moral option by utilitarian theory or if it would be viewed as immoral. Slippery slope arguments are often used to argue that if we allow something to become legal we will be stepping onto the slippery slope to allowing something viewed as morally wrong to also become legal. These arguments are used often within society, although most of the time they are used in a casual manner and the distance between point A and B is so large they are not taken seriously, (Spielthenner, 2010; Jefferson, 2014). For that reason slippery slope arguments as a general idea are not considered to be good logical arguments. So, slippery slope ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Comparing Joyce Carol Oates The Lady With The Pet Dog In Joyce Carol Oates short story The Lady with the Pet Dog, Oates takes Anton Chekhov s characters and transports them to the 1970s, deciding to retell their story through the lens of the modernized female protagonist, Anna. While this story is obviously different from its original source of inspiration, in this paper I ve chosen to focus on the similarities that have slight twists in Oates retelling. I will firstly look at the structure of the two tales. In Oates version, just as in Chekhov s, the structure is cyclical. The beginning of the story is set at a midpoint, during a concert where Anna meets the stranger or her new lover. As the story progresses, it s interesting how Oates returns to the concert scene twice, choosing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Racial Barriers In Baseball Introduction Over the first few decades after the breaking of the racial barrier in baseball by Jackie Robinson the number of African American in professional baseball stayed on a rise, unfortunately the numbers over the most recent decades have been going the opposite direction. The color barrier was broken in Major League Baseball (MLB) by Robinson on April 15, 1947 when he was called to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson broke way for African Americans in baseball and they took advantage of it as the number increased every year after. The purpose of this study is to find out why the percentage of African Americans playing in the MLB has been on a steady decline the past few decades. This percentage is dropping every year and there does not seem to be much of a change in the future. While the numbers of African American professionals are much higher in football and basketball and not at risk of dropping soon, what is it that is making baseballs number slowly diminish. In this research I will examine numbers that have been put together and analyze interviews that were performed with some professionals as well as highly accredited sports journalist. Although I will focus on professional baseball I will also provide some insight on youth baseball to see what the future may hold as far as the possibility of another increase in the percentage of African Americans in the pros. As the years gone on there has also been an increase in latin baseball players throughout professional baseball, as well as a decrease in whites. Some questions regarding the topic are what is causing the decline in the percentage? What initiative is being taken by Major League Baseball to help try to increase the percentages? What is significant about baseball compared to other sports (football, basketball) that makes them different and less attractive to African American youth? Literature Review In all articles read all journalist mentions the same thing. One major contributor to the decline in African Americans in baseball is because of the cost to be good. Most of the highly talented players now come from travel ball and not your stand park rec. league. To compete at the highly level of travel ball has the potential to be ... • 40. Creation Vs Inuit Creation The Popol Vuh, Inuit, and the Zulu people come from three very different continents, and yet they all share stories of how earth and mankind were created. The Popol Vuh and the Inuit both share similar ways on how man was created. According to both cultures man was created by a higher power, for the Popol Vuh it was the Gods Gucumatz and Huracán and for the Inuit it was the Raven, a being that possessed powers of both man and bird and who could shape shift into both beings. The Gods Gucumatz and Huracán created the flesh and blood of man with corn given to them by the animals they created. The Raven, unknowingly, created man through pea pods he planted while creating life on a dark, dismal earth. As mentioned, animals were used to send messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason why the Popol Vuh Gods Gucumatz and Huracán created mankind was so that they would feed them. This differed in the Inuit creation story because it was the other way around. In the Inuit creation story, the Raven feed man by bringing him berries but when that was not enough for him he created animals out of clay for man to eat. The way the Zulu s differ from the Popol Vuh and the Inuit is in the creation of women. The Popol Vuh and the Inuit both created their women but the Zulu women were born from the reed of a Uthlanga plant and picked off by Unkulunkulu to roam earth. The Zulu s are also the only ones that were created purely by a plant, they were not planted by something, like the Raven in the Inuit creation story. Also, the Inuit s story seemed to care about the animals because they were purposely placed far away from many so they would not be eaten, which is understandable seeing that their creator is a raven. In the Popol Vuh creation story, the Gods Gucumatz and Huracán punished the animals for speaking their names by having them kill and eat each other. Although the Popol Vuh, Inuit and Zulu s share similarities on how the world was created, it is the differences that separate them from one another and makes them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Global Warming Is A Real Phenomenon INTRODUCTION Global warming has become a central problem in the scientific community, while viewed as more of a severe problem by some people and policy makers than other, the consensus in the scientific community is that global warming is a very real phenomenon. Although the global warming is still debated as far as how fast and severe the problem is, scientific data has shown that the average global temperature has increased by 0.4 to 0.8 Celsius during the last 100 years (http://www.livescience.com/, 02 18 2016). Sustainable development is a central concept within the environmental frame of thought and closely linked to the problem of global warming. The term sustainable development refers to the use of resources in a sustainable way, namely meeting the need of resources while not depleting them for future generations. The concept of sustainable development contains both needs and limitations, i.e. resources that are needed as well as technological and social limitations in responsible retrieval of those resources (World Commission on Environment and Development, 41). Achieving sustainable development is however a difficult problem that has many different aspects to it. Recycling is a main component of sustainable development and an important aspect in a variety of industries. Metal exists in almost every industry, whether it is the manufacture of steel beams, precious metals for computers or copper cables for powerlines. Considering that metal recycling is a source to ... One of the most common instruments, the piano, is highly versatile and has been played in nearly every genre: Rhythm and Blues, Orchestral, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Rap, and many more. Not only did Thile prove that the Mandolin could handle delicate and complex pieces through his rendition of the Bach sonatas, Chris Thile added the sonatas to his repertoire and began incorporating other genres into the sonatas at his live performances. Interpreting Bach sonatas, usually regarded as nearly perfect pieces, is a bold move in the world of music but, Thile has manipulated the sonata s with eloquence through his proficiency on Mandolin. In the 21st century, Asia has become the most dynamic region in the global economy today. What is more, its regional security and stability has grabbed increasing global attention as well. From the EU perspective, after the financial crisis, economy in Europe has not fully recovered yet. For EU, cooperating with Asia in economic sector is even more important since the latter has world s largest population that buys almost a quarter of EU exports. Besides, EU has a strategic interest in regional security in Asia. For example, the EU s interests would be hurt by tensions on the Korea Peninsula or across the Taiwan Straits. Thirdly, nowadays, the US and Russia even other emerging powers have further deepened their economic and political relationship with South East Asia. Under this circumstances, the EU should speed up its pace strengthen its political and economic presence across the region through comprehensive cooperation lest it would be marginalized by both Asia and the US in the near future.
