E Knowles-Carter Biography
e Knowles Carter ( born September 4, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter and actress. Born and
raised in Houston, Texas along with her younger sister, Solange, who would later follow her sister into
the entertainment industry. Her father, Mathew, worked for many years as a sales representative
selling medical equipment, while her mother, Tina, worked in a bank and later opened her own beauty
salon, which became one of the most successful salons in Houston. As a young child, Knowles was
shy and had few friends. Her parents signed her up for a dance class when she was seven years old, to
make friends more than anything else, as Tina Knowles described to Essence.
Beyoncé attended St. Mary s Montessori School in Houston, where she enrolled in dance classes. Her
singing talent was discovered when dance instructor Darlette Johnson began humming a song and she
finished it, able to hit the high pitched notes Beyoncé s interest in music and performing continued

Economic Sanctions And International Institutions With An...
Economic sanctions provide states and international institutions with an invaluable instrument of
coercion. Without having to resort to violence, at least in the traditional sense, states can gain
concessions and compliance from the target state. Economic sanctions are, however, not always
successful. An analysis of 204 cases of implemented economic sanctions, from the start of the Cold
War to 2000, revealed that economic sanctions were at least partially successful a mere 34% of the
time (Hufbauer). While all economic sanctions have financial implications, there is a distinction to be
drawn between economic sanctions which include both trade and financial sanctions and financial
sanctions, as a standalone term. Financial sanctions can be defined as restrictions that limit the
provision of certain financial services or restrict access to financial markets, funds and economic
resources in order to achieve a specific foreign policy or national security objective (Office of
Financial Sanctions Implementation HM Treasury). As the international financial system has become
more globalized, and as a result more difficult to avoid while engaging in practically any form of
economic transaction, the efficacy of financial sanctions has increased over more traditional forms of
economic sanctions. Modern financial sanctions also have the added benefit of being more precise
than their alternatives. This enables initiator states to institute sanctions in a more stylized manner and

Blue Mountains Fires
Describe the nature of the hazard
In October 2013, a series of multiple bushfires spread throughout NSW, mainly starting in the Blue
Mountains.
A lot of fuel, joined with warm, parched and blowy weather, provided hazardous conditions, which
powered the fires.
Worst of the fires, was on Oct 18, there were over 100 fires blazing statewide. The Premier of New
South Wales Mr O Farrell professed a state of emergency on 20 October, authorizing firefighters to
evict residents and annihilate fire affected structures.
BOM recorded that September of 2013 was the warmest September recorded for NSW.
Temperatures during September were more than 6 degrees above the normal from 22 40 september.

Lake Munmorah High School near the Ruttleys Road Fire was also evacuated. Students should not
take risks to get to an exam. The first priority for every student is to make sure that they are safe, . On
October 23 every school in the Blue Mountains was closed to facilitate the work of the emergency
services and to encourage residents to leave the mountains that day for their own safety.
Transport across the state was severely affected at its peak on 17 and 18 October and again on 23
October. The Hume Motorway was shut in both directions as a consequence of the bushfire at
Balmoral. In the Blue Mountains, the Bells Line of Road was closed in both directions. High traffic
loads, whilst not closed, impacted the Great Western Highway. The Pacific Highway was also shut in
both directions from Swansea to Lake Munmorah from 17 18 October.
After 10 days of business on hold , the subsequent influence of this natural disaster began to take its
toll. When business owners resumed their focus to their industries, not only were they carrying the
same feelings and emotional exhaustion as the rest of our community, they returned with a
considerably increased level of stress from business losses, combined with the scary task of

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Analysis
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, known as OCD, is considered a constant fear or worrying aspect
(obsessions) that includes the frequent repetition of behaviors to reduce anxiety (compulsions). Some
of the common symptoms include excessive washing or cleaning, repeated actions such as opening
and closing the door or even the light switch a number of times before entering or leaving a room.
Intelligence is not an issue as more people with OCD tend to possess an above average IQ. Obsessive
compulsive disorder affects children and adolescents, as well as adults (one third to one half of adults
with OCD report a childhood onset of the disorder). Treatment for OCD involves the use of behavioral
therapy as this involves increasing exposure to what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

attention that not all patients respond fully and how family accommodation specifically influences
pediatric patients with OCD. It raises the question if there are improved outcomes based on family
accommodations. With that being said, the study investigates the association between family
accommodation and treatment outcome in a relatively large sample of pediatric patients with OCD
participating in cognitive behavioral therapy. The outcome regards how effective the treatment
actually was and what impact it had. The prediction is that the majority of parents would report family
accommodations of their child s symptoms and that family accommodation would be seen as
positively related to ratings of child OCD impairment. In turn, the level of family accommodation
would decrease following cognitive behavioral therapy participation and post treatment levels of
family accommodation would be

Salvoss Law Case
Since its creation in 2010, Salvos Law has conducted over 11,000 pro bono cases in Australia. Salvos
Law is a firm under the ABS structure and is apart of Salvation Army and is comprised of a
commercial law firm and a pro bono firm. The number of pro bono case taken on by Salvos Law is
significantly greater than the amount of pro bono cases conducted by most firms in Canada and it s
success is attributed to its ability of Salvation Army to have unlimited ownership of the law firm. In
British Colombia, Pivot legal tried to copy the Salvos framework, but ultimately had to close down
due to lack of affordable capital and lack of business management expertise; both that could have been
mitigated if it were conducted with an ABS model .
Even if there is an increase emphasis on the bottom line, this pressure introduces the concept of
retained earnings to legal practices which encourages long term investment; something that the
partnership/sole proprietorship model discourages . By encouraging long term investments, it
encourages firms to innovate, which is beneficial for the legal system.

Guns and Violence Essay
Guns and violence have some long lasting effects on not only the crime rate, but the rights that people
have to own guns themselves. Even though the violence is a factor in why many believe that guns
should be banned, guns should be allowed and not banned because they should be allowed because of
the laws and the rights of citizens allow them there rights. The ethics and laws that occur with the
current and enduring debates are another meaningful point. As Supreme Court Cases rage on about
how a cities ban on handguns could break amendments, this is how the topic has gained from it (Hoxie
474). As crime statistics begin to rise there are many reasons that they need to work on the juvenile
justice system (Collier 478). The other topic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many believe that if guns are made illegal that there will be more violence due to how they receive the
weapon most likely illegally. As there are many kids that have obtained guns without their parents
even notice, they can bring tragedy to their schools, as kids are likely to open fire on other kids if they
would obtain a gun. It would not be the first time a child would have done this, as it happened in
Paducah, Kentucky as three children were killed in the lobby by a fourteen year old. He was charged
as a juvenile, as he was just a child (Collier 477). There are many statistics that prove to be a major
factor on why the juvenile system will most likely be revamped. Most states have a way of sending
children to a juvenile court, where they can only be found delinquent and placed in a facility. This has
been the normal way of taking care of it for quite a long time and many believe that this law or rule
needs to be changed. Crimes are linked to guns and the violence they bring in many ways. They can
corrupt adults and even their kids. As a child everything seems different, and the violence they see on
TV, video games, music, or any other media including their parents themselves could have drastic
measures on how they act. As some kids have done things wrong only by mistake and some have done
them knowing what they were doing. One boy killed his teacher on the last day of school, and he was

Richard Scrushy and HealthSouth Essay
Introduction HealthSouth is one of the nation s largest healthcare providers specializing in
rehabilitation. HealthSouth was founded by Richard M. Scrushy in 1984 and went public in 1986.
Scrushy served as its Chairman of the Board from 1994 to 2002. The company was incorporated in
January 1984 as Amcare Inc. before its name was changed to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Corporation
in May 1985. In January of 2003, Mr. Scrushy reassumed the position of CEO. HealthSouth grew
rapidly during the 1980 s and 1990 s. This growth was largely due to acquisitions. HealthSouth owned
more than 330 hospitals worldwide. It was also during this time that Scrushy became known as one of
the highest paid CEOs in the United States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The charges included conspiracy, money laundering, obstruction of justice and perjury (Johnson

behavior in Mr. Scrushy? Perhaps what we need is a scale for measuring the moral development or
character of the officers to whom the financial status and reports of the company are entrusted
(Jennings, 2005, p. 44 45). One measurement that can be used is a look into their personal lives. An
evaluation of the private conduct of the executive can often prove to be insightful and a predictor of
future behaviors. How we treat those who are the closest to us and, at least in theory, the most
important is telling (Jennings, 2005, p.45). Mr. Scrushy was married to wife number three and is the
father of eight children by three different women. Impact on Stakeholders
Richard Scrushy s management style was one that fostered intimidation and fear amongst his
employees. The weekly Monday morning meetings were often called Monday morning beatings when
the actual budget numbers did not meet the forecasted expectations. Every Monday morning he grilled
his division chiefs on the profits in their areas of responsibility and publicly berated any subordinate
who failed to meet his expectations (Solieri, Felo Hodowanitz, 2008, p. 342).

equity (debt/equity) ratio.

Historians have tried to exempt Italians from their role in the holocaust. While Italy did precept racial

as hard as he could and ran away. He took the long way home so he wouldn t have to help with dinner.
He would be scolded for it but he didn t care. On his way he saw Mrs. Penny watering her daisies. He
kicked her pots over and ran away before she could react. Where have you been, his mother asked

The Definition Of E Learning
Definition of e Learning
Today people need to learn new concepts and new techniques that change rapidly, so people have an
overwhelming need to learn, sometime they also need to work while learning and their resources are
limited therefore they need the power of technology to overcome the limitations of time, distance and
resources. E Learning provide people from one or different organizations anytime and anywhere
learning possibilities, providing the resources to teach them. Different e
Learning methods exist to support the different learning styles of different people who learn in
different ways and at different times. According to Mindflash.com (2015) E Learning is a range of
information technologies that schools and corporations use for education and training. In e
Learning courses, instructors and students who are too often located in different physical places
receive the information through computer networks, so they are provided the same material via their
computers.
According to Hung Jui long, (2012), some scholars define e learning as an instruction delivered by all
electronic media. Among them is Govindasamy (2002, p. 288) who stated that e learning
includes instruction delivered via all electronic media including the Internet, intranets, extranets,
satellite broadcasts, audio/video tape, interactive TV, and CD ROM.

It is believed that in order to change people, you have to change the way that the think.
The general line of reasoning is that if we learn to incorporate each other s diverse traits and
characteristics in the workplace, we can then use these differences to foster an innovative
environment, which will give the company a competitive advantage over the competitors that do not
accept workforce diversity. According to the Allied Academies International Conference, Diversity is
rapidly becoming a common practice among companies due to the increasing number of minorities
entering the job market today. As these groups become more prevalent throughout companies, upper
level employees are facing numerous challenges when determining what changes must take place to
create a positive working environment for everyone. Management is responsible for the development
and implementation of effective policies directly relating to diversity to ensure the acceptance of
minorities into the workplace and to aid in minorities success through equal opportunities and
treatment. (Marcia L. James, 2001, Academy for Studies in International Business Proceedings)

Advantages Of The Montessori Method
Students in traditional schools may not be getting the best education they can receive. Some students
grow up lacking the necessary skills required to perform well in the real world. The Montessori
Method trains students for real life situations. The children are not only taught the standard in
academics. They also develop emotional and social skills required to excel in their future careers. The
Montessori Method also puts other subcategories such as art and geology at the same level as
geometry or math. Standard teaching methods lack this variety of education, ultimately causing
students to feel overwhelmed in social situations and uneducated in certain subjects. Montessori
strategies should be integrated with standard teaching methods ... Show more content on

In a Montessori classroom, the teacher is the guide and the materials are the teacher. Sometimes the
teacher will sit kids down for a small group lesson, but most of the time the students are working
independently or with a partner. Social and behavioral skills are developed sooner in Montessori
students as opposed to traditionally taught students. A study themselves in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
where two groups of 12 year olds and two groups of 5 year olds were given basic assessments that
measured social development. One group in both age bands went to a Montessori school while the
other groups did not. Both Montessori groups scored higher on the social and behavioral development
tests compared to the students who did not attend a Montessori school (Do...). Even though
Montessori students learn at their own pace, they reach beyond the standard in education. Learning is
a discovery for students rather than a chore. Homework does not teach children responsibility, time
management skills, self discipline or more of what they should be learning during the day. What it
teaches is how to put up with a job that they dislike (McCarthy). Responsibility, time management,
and self discipline are not taught in traditional schools. These skills are expected to already be
mastered by the student but there are still students in college procrastinating until the night before a
deadline.

Interest rates
Most businesses will need to borrow money. The interest rate will affect how much it costs a business
to borrow money. If the interest rate is high the money a business owes is more than before. A 20%
interest rate rise would affect Cadbury s; they would have to pay extra money towards the loan. This
too would affect Sainsbury s in the same way. Any interest rates that go up will affect a business
because the business needs to make up the costs and the only way to do this is to higher the prices of
their service or products. The company might ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If they did lower their prices they would loose money anyway so it is a hard move for the other stores.
Cadburys could update products such as dairy milk. Or they could change the packet and make it more

Sainsbury s could sell healthier foods like their be good to yourself range. This is very successful
because Jamie Oliver is advertising and when he says it s good it is good. Vouchers for active kids will
make people buy their products. Nectar points will make people buy the products too because people
will spend money and save money at the same time.
The Environment
The environment can be a big factor in the running of a business because if they do anything to affect
the environment they will get loads of environmental protesters trying to close down the factory or
trying to ban the product. If Cadburys were to produce too much pollution they would be greatly
concentrated on and their reputation would be lost. In their case they would loose a lot of money
because they only sell edible products so they would be closed down, [IMAGE]but if Sainsbury s got
accused of polluting too much they could do a whole range of things because they don t just sell edible
foods and they don t make the food in their own shop (except for bread and fish).

Bargaining Power of Suppliers and Buyers of Video Games
Bargaining power of suppliers: Hardware, game publisher, game developer
Bargaining power of buyers: there is a high power (82)
For the industry analysis, we are certain of sales since the PS4 is a consumer product particularly. For
that reason, the buyer has a high bargaining power on the product. The market for casual gamers has
increased seriously and sales increased after decreasing price of the PS3. Due to the uniqueness of
every video game console and the games buyers have bargaining power. A small difference might be
significance an extra hundred dollars for an intense gamer. People have more aware to the price
difference because they play video games more casually and as a result they have more bargaining
power. Buyers have a reasonable amount of power in the video game industry in particular with
Nintendo. Although Microsoft and Sony have other sources of revenues, the major source of income
comes from the sales of games and game consoles.

A Research Study On Helicopter Parenting Essay
College life for the twenty first century student is not what it used to be. According to an American
College Health Association National College Health Assessment survey, eighty five percent of college
students feel so tremendously overwhelmed they walk through the day blind and just hoping things
work out (Fisher). Students lack the ability to focus and manage everything that is piled on them
during class. The term helicopter parenting was first common in the 1990 s, but was first used in 1969.
Now, forty seven years later, helicopter parenting has become prevalent in college students lives and
the culture around people. A helicopter parent is one who takes an overprotective or excessive interest
in the life of their child or children. Helicopter parenting does not start out randomly as a college
student; helicopter parenting is a process that develops results.
The helicopter parent issue is prevalent to many people. People from Doctor Amy Joyce to stay at
home mom Jamie Porter have done studies to explain the effects of helicopter parenting. Psychologists
such as Chris Meno have done research and testings to collect data on helicopter parented children.
The issue of helicopter parenting is not just concerning children; it is concerning people across the
country.

Language Assessment Literacy
Language assessment literacy refers to the familiarity of the stakeholders with measurement practices
and the application of this knowledge to classroom practices and issues of assessing language (Inbar
Lourie, 2008). Appropriate assessment provides teachers with important information about student
performance and about the extent to which learning objectives have been achieved in the classroom.
Despite the importance of student progress assessment (Taylor, 2009; Scarino, 2013), many teachers
and test users have a limited understand¬ing of assessment essentials (Popham, 2009). Competencies
that language teachers need to acquire in order to develop assessment literacy include the ability to
understand proper testing practices, use various means of assessment, interpret assessment results, and
use the results in their teaching (Boyles, 2005). Language teachers, who also fulfill the role of testers,

The artist creates a focal point with the only woman whose face viewers cannot see. The women s
dress appears to have caught on fire and produces luminosity around the chandelier, forming a shadow
within the corners of the room, which brings the viewers eyes from the main woman, up to the
chandelier, as shown in the picture to the left. Heffernan s paintings express her untamed imagination
with majestic fantasy, dream like subjects, yet she paints with a very classic technique. When I first
viewed The Self Portrait as Wunderkabinett, Michelangelo s Sistine Chapel came to mind.
Michelangelo illustrates the desire and describes the oneness that humans anticipate with God through
salvation. The artists painting technique is traditional, with the sensible and realistic proportions of the
human body, the distinguishing lines, the application of shadow, the intricate detail on every object
within the painting, and the use of traditional complementary color pairs. Julie Heffernan was born in
1956. She was raised in Northern California but resides in Brooklyn, New York today. She received a
BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz and incredibly, her Masters of Fine Art in Painting
from the Yale School of Art. A significant moment that contributes to her talent as an artist was in

The Sociological Canon
The field of sociology has three sociologists who form the sociological canon, of whom many
theories, and strategies have formed how we look at society. Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile
Durkhiem all share a similar timeline when they were born, but even with that similarity these
sociologists saw the world in vastly different scopes which influenced their theories. These contrasting
values and theories show clearly in their work and has led to some of the most influential works
within the field, hence their place as the sociological canon. It is interesting to see the contrasting
nature between these very influential sociologists and will be the focus of this essay. While looking at
the three sociologists who make up the sociological canon it is important to take into consideration
how they view social order and social change. Karl Marx used his theory of social class in order to
explain how society structured itself (Bratton, Denham 2014). Marx theorized that classes were
relational, exploitive, and conflictive in nature. Marx explained social order, by way of the labour
market and modes of production. His theories showed a pessimistic but realistic view of how the
system abuses and takes advantage of the working class, and through strife the working class needed
to empower themselves to grow and reach their potential. Emile Durkheim theorized about the
division of labour, which was a written work that analyzed the relationship between social solidarity
and the

Many Rivers To Cross Summary
Everyone has a desire, something that they want to achieve or obtain for them. Whether it is ethical or
immoral, having desires is almost inevitable. Sometimes these desires make people go through tough
times. Tragic occurrences such as death and broken relationships shape the lives of people positively
or negatively. In the following essay, Many Rivers to Cross and the short stories, Two Kinds and
Everyday Use , the protagonists of these texts struggle to achieve their desire, but because of those
struggles the main characters do eventually come to a revelation. Many Rivers to Cross written by

One thing that the author was trying to get across is that people have to fight for what they want.
Nothing is simply handed to anyone. In Many Rivers to Cross , she goes through a lot of adversity.
The divorce with her husband was one, but the main one was her mother s suicide. Usually after
someone dies in a person s life, a whole new window is opened. The young woman realized a lot after
her mother s death. The effect of her mother s death was that she knew from then on that she had to
live her life the best way she can. She was so tired of letting everyone down. This was her revelation,
And it was to honor my mother that I did fight with my father, that man who could not tell the living
from the dead, she said, And really it is to honor Mrs. Hazel Griffin and my cousin Valerie all the
woman that I love (Jordan, 68 71). The struggles that the character in Two Kinds goes through is
continuously disappointing her mother. What was most difficult for her was that she lives in a foreign
family, a Chinese family, which most people know that they can be really strict people. Every time her
mother set her up to do something that she did not want to do, she failed at it and that made her mother
upset. The author is showing the reader the effects of that through the emotion of the child. But she
did come to a revelation with herself. She knew that her mother could only do so much

Analysis Of The Film Peppermint Candy
In Sopyonje, the narrative structure is linear, which the cause leads to the effect. Peppermint Candy
narrators the personal narrative of Youngho by a series of episodic event. The episodic events are a
chain of events that are linked through repetition of motifs, which is the scene of railway. The episodic
events that follow are in reserves chronological order that highlights the personal narrative of Youngho

3. Firewalls
A firewall is an access control security tool used to prevent unwanted access to a network. It is usually
the first line of defense and serves sort of like a gate in which all outside network traffic and internet
connections are verified prior to granting access to a private network, making sure it meets security
policies in place (IU, 2013). With a firewall a provider can establish which traffic is acceptable and
which isn t and the firewall simply executes at command, blocking all unrecognized access making
the network more secure.
Firewalls originated in the late 1980 s getting their name from firefighting and prevention, signifying
keeping a fire out (Rouse, 2014). If an attack on your network occurred it could be compared to a fire
which is where the firewall comes in, keeping negative effects out.
Firewalls are said to now be used as a major defense against cyber attacks.
There are several types of firewalls. The most commonly used are;

Toys as Role Models
Toys as Role Models Judy Attfield, who holds a PhD in history and design, has written numerous
articles in relation to design history. Her articles, often written in a formal and informative style,
concentrate on parenting and family issues. Citing the differences in the maneuverability designs of
Barbie and Action Man, which embody the stereotypical cliché of feminine passivity and masculine
activity respectively, Barbie and Action Man: Adult toys for girls and boys, 1959 93 (P. Kirkham

of their own. Targeting the general public in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Attfield failed to take into consideration the supporting role of parents in shaping gender
notions among children through toys. Since children do not have the financial ability to purchase toys,
the sales of Barbie and Action Man can be ascribed to their parents despite Attfield s claim that
parents disapprove of these toys (Attfield, 1996). Children may perceive this parental act of purchase
as a sign of parental approval of the characteristics that the toys may contain. Children may then be
influenced into thinking that Barbie and Action Man, with their projection of gender stereotypes, are
desirable role models to follow. Another point that Attfield neglected is the role of the media in
shaping a child s understanding of gender differences. The media is a powerful medium of influence.
It is an endless source of information that is easily accessible to people of all ages. Although no one
can wholly determine that a child s behaviour is derived from the media, it is clear that children learn
by imitating people and the surroundings around them. Hence, we should not overlook the possibility
that a child s fantasy may stem from watching commercials and shows that are targeted at him. As a
result of overlooking the influence of media, Attfield did little to explain the origins of a child s
fantasy, which may be a product of media rather than pure creativity. The

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Dissociative Disorder Essay
Psychogenic amnesia, also known as dissociative amnesia, is a type of memory disorder differentiated
by abrupt retrograde memory loss that can last as short as a few hours to as long as years. Individuals
with this disorder block out specific information generally related to a traumatic or stressful event,
which in turn makes him or her unable to remember any relevant information. It is not to be confused
with general amnesia. The memories of the event are in the brain but the person is unable to access
them unless triggered by something. Causes This form of dissociative disorder is often related to times
of overwhelming stress, for example severe abuse, traumatic accidents/disaster or war. The complexity
of the condition is not fully understood, but many believe there is a genetic link due to the high
frequency of family members sharing episodes of the condition. Risk Factors More common in

The Supreme Court Essay
The foundation of the Supreme Court began with the earliest articles of the constitution. More
specifically, Section II of Article III dictated that The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law
and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which
shall be made, under their Authority... (National Archives). This language laid out the legal precedent
for which the Supreme Court could be built. Due to the intentionally vague nature, the founding
fathers intended for the first Congressional Contingent to build the workings of the court. Inspirations
for such a Federal legal system arose from several sources. Chiefly among these sources was British
Common Law and the Magna Carta. The first Congress built the Supreme Court in its original form of
six judges, and from there, the court evolved in the early 19th century and exerted its influence on the
development of the United States of America. The founding fathers who helped to develop the
rationale of the Constitution outlined the section on the Supreme Court with a certain sense of
delicacy. In this way, the language they used didn t developed a framework for the Supreme Court.
There were several reasons for this tepid action. Firstly, the concept of an independent non partisan
judiciary system, in the mind of the American citizenry, was too reminiscent of British Royal Rule.
The United States was fresh off an intellectual and physical battle with a perceived

Trait, Behavioral, Situational, New Leadership and Emerging each has built off of each other

An example of what typifies leadership to me is a contrary to what a leader should do. As the elected

A Brief Look at a Legionnaire s Equipment
A brief look at a legionnaire s equipment
Very few empires throughout history have rivaled the resplendence and sheer size of the Roman
Empire at its peak. The height of the empire was achieved in the year 117 ad with a size of 6.5 million
sq. km. One of the defining factors that allowed the romans to have such successful conquests and to
maintain such a large empire is the standardization of equipment that its troops had to abide by. The
quality of the equipment was another factor that played a role in their success.
Roman weaponry
Each roman soldier was fitted with similar equipment, the primary weapon of each was their Gladius
they also had a Pugio for their spare weapon. Depending on the era they would have had 6 plumbata s
clipped to the inside of their shield or Pilum on their back for throwing.
A Gladius is a short sword ranging from 50 to 60 cm long. Gladii were double edged with a sharp
point for thrusting, making them very versatile weapons. Their hilts were composed of bone or
hardwood usually and knobbed to increase the soldiers grip on the weapon. In combat soldiers
primarily used their weapons for stabbing at stomach height, but could inflict grisly injury s as a
slashing weapon as well. The Gladius was used for many years before finally being replaced towards
the end of the Roman Empire by the Spatha.

Examination of past and present ethical guidelines on biomedical research
Ethics can be defined as a set of moral values informing one s decisions. But this set of moral values
can be influenced by many different things, such as various cultures, religions, and even technological
advancements. This is called moral relativism, the idea that there are no real truths in ethics and what
is right or wrong varies person by person. That is why before there was any codes or set of rules
regarding what was ethical put in place, people were able to get away with doing all sorts of scientific
research, that would now be deemed unethical. Biomedical research is to be done to eventually better
the health of humans.
Biomedical research has been going on for many years, it is how we have knowledge of many deadly
diseases as well as the discovery of vaccines and antibiotics! These things seem so common today, but
infact went through lots of stages of research to get to the technologies we have today. However,
before 1947, there were no codes of ethics or regulations to ensure that research being done was
ethical. The smallpox vaccination, although the first successful vaccine to ever be developed, would
be considered highly unethical today. Edward Jenner experimented on a healthy young 8 year old boy
without consent. In today s society, this study would never have been allowed to continue. There are

Types Of Diffusion And Diffusion
gy
2) All plants and animals are made up of cells and all cells are surrounded by a membrane. Any ion or
molecule that the cell needs to either use or get rid of requires the ability to move through the cell
membrane. Diffusion in plant and animal cells is the spontaneous net movement of ions and molecules
from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, this is also referred to as moving
down a concentration gradient. The movement of molecules and ions during diffusion is known as
passive transport because they move as a result of their own kinetic energy. Although the kinetic
energy is random in its movement due to the concentration gradient there will be net movement until
dynamic equilibrium is reached. The rate of diffusion depends on the distance the molecule needs to
travel, temperature, solubility, concentration gradient and the size of the molecule. Diffusion is
dependent on the molecules being able to pass through the cell membrane, however, diffusion does not
require a membrane in order to take place.
There are three different types of diffusion:
Simple diffusion some small molecules that are non polar pass through a membrane.
Channel diffusion larger, polar molecules are helped across the membrane by proteins that are
embedded in the membrane creating a gateway for the molecules to pass through.
Facilitated diffusion carrier proteins bind to certain molecules and release them on the other side of the
membrane.
If cells need

by participation in events that inspired the revolution the Boston Massacre, the Boston tea Party, and

These include a bias when commenting on the Boston Massacre, the ill explanations of the Quartering

Young states that The soldiers were beaten and sought revenge. (par. 7). This implies that the British
soldiers were looking for a fight on the night of the massacre. This a type of propaganda that was
commonly used in this era to demonize the soldiers acts even though it was most likely just an
accidental shooting. Another major weakness the Young exudes hoe he fails to mention important

to decrease the cost of holding troops in America and forced the colonists to house troops and pay for
all of their accommodations. This information would be helpful in describing the events that led up to

In The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie narration is a key element in the appeal of the story. The book starts
off in medias res and continues to make use of both analepses and prolepses. Many believe that an
omniscient narrator, in part because of the anachrony, recounts the book but in this essay I will argue
that the book has an unreliable narrator through examination of the narration of character of Mary. On
many occasions Muriel Spark uses narration to endorse the treatment of Mary by the other characters,

The four founders were all around 19 years old when they attended the International Eucharistic
Congress in Philadelphia and saw Mother Teresa. They got inspired and decided to help people in the
community. They collected $146 from their friends and bought baloney and bread. They took the food
to a church on the corner of Broad and Market and asked if they could distribute sandwiches to those
who may be hungry or homeless. They got the permission for a two week trial and the rest is history.
One of them Domenic Vallone, was on the board until a couple years ago and the three have since
moved from the area.
They operated from seven different locations before having its permanent place on Federal Street in
2008. Now they serve close to 400 guests each weeknight and sometimes even more. During
weeknights they serve from 4 to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. The guests coming in are
a mixed group with people who are homeless and on food stamps which itself is not enough to feed a
full family. The nutritious meals they serve each night include homemade main entrees with drinks
and desserts.
Apart from the CK purchasing foods by themselves, the kitchen also receives donations from many

The Comic Stumptown By Greg Rucka And Matthew Southworth...
The comic Stumptown by Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth and the retro audio podcast Nick
Carter: Master Detective starring Lon Clack portray the different roles of women in detective fiction.
Nick Carter was on the radio from 1943 to 1955, and represents more traditional roles for gender.
Over the 125 episodes, the radio show followed detective Nick Carter and his female assistant, Patsy
on different crime scene investigations. Carter was also able to solve seemingly impossible crimes by
looking at unique angles. Stumptown was published in 2011. It represents a more modern view on
gender roles in detecting. In this comic, Dex Parios, a private investigator, is hired to find someone s
granddaughter. She encounters many difficulties while investigating and attempting to find the
missing girl. In the end, the plot ends up being a lot more complicated than initially presented. In this
essay, I am going to look at how the role of gender in detective fiction has evolved over time.
Although Nick Carter had both books and a movie about him, the most well known installment of his
story was the radio show. Nick Carter: Master Detective was produced in the 1940s and 50s, which
means it reflects a traditional view of gender roles in detecting, as well as in the world, that was
common of this time period. The patriarchal society dictates that men are the providers for the family
and have the jobs and do the hard work. Women are to stay in the home and not do any heavy duty
labor or

The Houston Astros have been the class of Major League Baseball, leading both leagues with 44 wins
and a lofty .688 winning percentage. Their lineup is outstanding, led by young stars Jose Altuve,
Carlos Correa and George Springer, and top starting pitchers Dallas Keuchel (9 0) and Lance
McCullers (6 1). However, Keuchel is on the 10 day disabled list with a nerve issue in his neck and
may be shut down longer, considering nerve problems are very dangerous and the Astros are running
away with the AL West, currently holding a 12 game lead over the second place L.A. Angels.
As tremendous as the Astros season has been, they should tell their bus driver to start looking in the
side view mirror, because the New York Yankees runaway freight ... Show more content on

Judge became the first player at the new Yankee Stadium to hit a ball completely over the bleachers in
left field, a prodigious 495 foot blast that had retired Yankee icon Paul O Neill laughing in the
broadcast booth. Judge homered again in his next at bat, shooting a 402 foot missile over right center
field wall. The rookie leads the American League in all three triple crown categories (21 home runs,
47 RBI, .344 BA), while also leading the AL with 54 runs scored and 38 walks with a ridiculous .450
on base percentage.
The Yankees lead all of MLB with a +115 run differential (Houston is second at +98), and their
offense is first in home runs (102), runs scored (353), RBI (335), slugging percentage (.476), on base
percentage (.351) and OPS (.827), despite playing four less games than the Astros. New York is also
sixth in walks (237).
As impressive as the Yankees offense has been, it should get even better with the return of first
baseman Greg Bird from a lengthy stint on the DL and No. 1 prospect, 20 year old Gleyber Torres,
pushing for a promotion from Triple A to take over third base from veteran Chase Headley, who is one
of the few weak links in the Yankees lineup.
This season, the Yankees starting pitching has been a pleasant surprise as well with youngsters Luis
Severino (5 2) and Jordan Montgomery (4 4) developing rapidly,

Mini Task # 3. For This Mini Task, I Chose To Work On A
Mini Task # 3 For this Mini Task, I chose to work on a review of the book Hunger of Memory: The
Education of Richard Rodriguez by Richard Rodriguez. It was very appealing to me do this review
this book. When I open the dedication, I feel a lot of emotions, Rodriguez says: She tells people, her
neighbors, that I am a PhD professor [emphasis from the author] I am doing some writing, she
explains... . These first sentences reminded my mother in Ecuador, who does not miss any opportunity
to tell people mi hija, está estudiando un doctorado, [my daughter is studying a doctorate]. My mother
says she wants everybody to know that I am a PhD because it something she is very proud of. As
Rodriguez s mother, my mother also understands the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Rodriguez family, Spanish was respected and appreciated while the kids were little. The
children grew up using that language in this private sphere making the distinction of what they heard
outside their home. English was the language reserved for the outsiders, the public language. The
language their parents failed in producing, making Rodriguez developing shameful feelings to their
parents slow English acquisition. By being so open with the reader, Rodriguez presents the discussion
about what means for a child being immerse in two languages and two cultures. Brice Heath (1983)
refers to the ability of the speakers to shift not just language, but also their roles as ways to protect
themselves from the outsiders expectations. Children are very sensible in this matter. Rodriguez grew
up in two languages and adapting himself to two cultures. However, schooling was critical in shaping
and maintaining the family language. Rodriguez attended a Catholic school, where almost all his
classmates were white from the upper middle class, rich people. His relationships with people from a
different background, and more importantly from the privileged middle class white society, put him in
another perspective. Progressively, English was replacing Spanish as the private language at home.
For the Rodriguez family, it was a way to gain acceptance by their white neighbors, and praise the
importance of good education for their

  • 3. Economic Sanctions And International Institutions With An... Economic sanctions provide states and international institutions with an invaluable instrument of coercion. Without having to resort to violence, at least in the traditional sense, states can gain concessions and compliance from the target state. Economic sanctions are, however, not always successful. An analysis of 204 cases of implemented economic sanctions, from the start of the Cold War to 2000, revealed that economic sanctions were at least partially successful a mere 34% of the time (Hufbauer). While all economic sanctions have financial implications, there is a distinction to be drawn between economic sanctions which include both trade and financial sanctions and financial sanctions, as a standalone term. Financial sanctions can be defined as restrictions that limit the provision of certain financial services or restrict access to financial markets, funds and economic resources in order to achieve a specific foreign policy or national security objective (Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation HM Treasury). As the international financial system has become more globalized, and as a result more difficult to avoid while engaging in practically any form of economic transaction, the efficacy of financial sanctions has increased over more traditional forms of economic sanctions. Modern financial sanctions also have the added benefit of being more precise than their alternatives. This enables initiator states to institute sanctions in a more stylized manner and ... The number of pro bono case taken on by Salvos Law is significantly greater than the amount of pro bono cases conducted by most firms in Canada and it s success is attributed to its ability of Salvation Army to have unlimited ownership of the law firm. The women s dress appears to have caught on fire and produces luminosity around the chandelier, forming a shadow within the corners of the room, which brings the viewers eyes from the main woman, up to the chandelier, as shown in the picture to the left. Heffernan s paintings express her untamed imagination with majestic fantasy, dream like subjects, yet she paints with a very classic technique. When I first viewed The Self Portrait as Wunderkabinett, Michelangelo s Sistine Chapel came to mind. Michelangelo illustrates the desire and describes the oneness that humans anticipate with God through salvation. The artists painting technique is traditional, with the sensible and realistic proportions of the human body, the distinguishing lines, the application of shadow, the intricate detail on every object within the painting, and the use of traditional complementary color pairs. • 24. The Sociological Canon The field of sociology has three sociologists who form the sociological canon, of whom many theories, and strategies have formed how we look at society. Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkhiem all share a similar timeline when they were born, but even with that similarity these sociologists saw the world in vastly different scopes which influenced their theories. These contrasting values and theories show clearly in their work and has led to some of the most influential works within the field, hence their place as the sociological canon. It is interesting to see the contrasting nature between these very influential sociologists and will be the focus of this essay. While looking at the three sociologists who make up the sociological canon it is important to take into consideration how they view social order and social change. Karl Marx used his theory of social class in order to explain how society structured itself (Bratton, Denham 2014). Marx theorized that classes were relational, exploitive, and conflictive in nature. Marx explained social order, by way of the labour market and modes of production. His theories showed a pessimistic but realistic view of how the system abuses and takes advantage of the working class, and through strife the working class needed to empower themselves to grow and reach their potential. Emile Durkheim theorized about the division of labour, which was a written work that analyzed the relationship between social solidarity and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Many Rivers to Cross , she goes through a lot of adversity. The divorce with her husband was one, but the main one was her mother s suicide. Usually after someone dies in a person s life, a whole new window is opened. The young woman realized a lot after her mother s death. The effect of her mother s death was that she knew from then on that she had to live her life the best way she can. She was so tired of letting everyone down. This was her revelation, And it was to honor my mother that I did fight with my father, that man who could not tell the living from the dead, she said, And really it is to honor Mrs. Hazel Griffin and my cousin Valerie all the woman that I love (Jordan, 68 71). The struggles that the character in Two Kinds goes through is continuously disappointing her mother. What was most difficult for her was that she lives in a foreign family, a Chinese family, which most people know that they can be really strict people. Every time her mother set her up to do something that she did not want to do, she failed at it and that made her mother upset. Firewalls A firewall is an access control security tool used to prevent unwanted access to a network. It is usually the first line of defense and serves sort of like a gate in which all outside network traffic and internet connections are verified prior to granting access to a private network, making sure it meets security policies in place (IU, 2013). With a firewall a provider can establish which traffic is acceptable and which isn t and the firewall simply executes at command, blocking all unrecognized access making the network more secure. Firewalls originated in the late 1980 s getting their name from firefighting and prevention, signifying keeping a fire out (Rouse, 2014). If an attack on your network occurred it could be compared to a fire which is where the firewall comes in, keeping negative effects out. In addition, Attfield failed to take into consideration the supporting role of parents in shaping gender notions among children through toys. Since children do not have the financial ability to purchase toys, the sales of Barbie and Action Man can be ascribed to their parents despite Attfield s claim that parents disapprove of these toys (Attfield, 1996). Children may perceive this parental act of purchase as a sign of parental approval of the characteristics that the toys may contain. Children may then be influenced into thinking that Barbie and Action Man, with their projection of gender stereotypes, are desirable role models to follow. Another point that Attfield neglected is the role of the media in shaping a child s understanding of gender differences. The media is a powerful medium of influence. It is an endless source of information that is easily accessible to people of all ages. Although no one can wholly determine that a child s behaviour is derived from the media, it is clear that children learn by imitating people and the surroundings around them. Hence, we should not overlook the possibility that a child s fantasy may stem from watching commercials and shows that are targeted at him. As a result of overlooking the influence of media, Attfield did little to explain the origins of a child s fantasy, which may be a product of media rather than pure creativity. The ... More specifically, Section II of Article III dictated that The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority... (National Archives). This language laid out the legal precedent for which the Supreme Court could be built. Due to the intentionally vague nature, the founding fathers intended for the first Congressional Contingent to build the workings of the court. Inspirations for such a Federal legal system arose from several sources. Chiefly among these sources was British Common Law and the Magna Carta. The first Congress built the Supreme Court in its original form of six judges, and from there, the court evolved in the early 19th century and exerted its influence on the development of the United States of America. The founding fathers who helped to develop the rationale of the Constitution outlined the section on the Supreme Court with a certain sense of delicacy. In this way, the language they used didn t developed a framework for the Supreme Court. There were several reasons for this tepid action. Firstly, the concept of an independent non partisan judiciary system, in the mind of the American citizenry, was too reminiscent of British Royal Rule. One of the defining factors that allowed the romans to have such successful conquests and to maintain such a large empire is the standardization of equipment that its troops had to abide by. • 37. Types Of Diffusion And Diffusion gy 2) All plants and animals are made up of cells and all cells are surrounded by a membrane. Any ion or molecule that the cell needs to either use or get rid of requires the ability to move through the cell membrane. Diffusion in plant and animal cells is the spontaneous net movement of ions and molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, this is also referred to as moving down a concentration gradient. The movement of molecules and ions during diffusion is known as passive transport because they move as a result of their own kinetic energy. Although the kinetic energy is random in its movement due to the concentration gradient there will be net movement until dynamic equilibrium is reached. The rate of diffusion depends on the distance the molecule needs to travel, temperature, solubility, concentration gradient and the size of the molecule. Diffusion is dependent on the molecules being able to pass through the cell membrane, however, diffusion does not require a membrane in order to take place. There are three different types of diffusion: Simple diffusion some small molecules that are non polar pass through a membrane. Channel diffusion larger, polar molecules are helped across the membrane by proteins that are embedded in the membrane creating a gateway for the molecules to pass through. Facilitated diffusion carrier proteins bind to certain molecules and release them on the other side of the membrane. If cells need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
