Deoding Neanderthals Summary
Anthropology: Neanderthals Film Review
Throughout the documentary Decoding Neanderthals there was a push of research to push the human
view of Neanderthals. Over the year s research showed that we coexisted with Neanderthals and out
beat their species. Many believed that Neanderthals where like the stereotypical unintelligent and wild
caveman. With new technology, enhanced research, and the exposing documentary Decoding
Neanderthals pushed the boundaries of these past ideologies. Through this we have learned how
intelligent, symbolic, and closely related this species is to homo sapiens species. This research proved
that the Neanderthal may have not became extent due to in ability to create weapons but, due to inter

The Process Of Interpersonal Communication
Provisionalism in My World
The skill I am going to discuss is provisionalism. According to Interplay, the Process of Interpersonal
Communication provisionalism means a supportive style of communication in which a sender
expresses open mindness to others ideas and opinions (G 9). Open mindness as is willingness to
consider new ideas. I think provisionalism means to create a positive conversation that will not turn
off the other party and encourages an open mind.
Gibb notes in Interplay, the Process of Interpersonal Communication that provisionalism surfaces
through words such as perhaps, maybe, might, possibly and may (p331). In learning about this skill I
can improve my word choices to connect with people that I may have turned off by not using
provisionalism. In open mindness a person will listen to another opinion even though they have
already made up their mind. When using Provisionalism you create a more positive conversation by
avoiding statements of certainty. Both parties will usually be more apt to continue conversation and
are more likely to consider another s point of view. Gibb notes:
One reduces the defensiveness of the listener when one communicates that one is willing to
experiment with one s own behavior, attitudes and ideas.
The person who appears to be taking provisional attitudes, to be investigating issues rather than taking
sides on them, to be problem solving rather than doubting, and to be willing to experiment and explore

Among the similarities of Iran contra scandal and Watergate we have a concerned likely wrongdoing

How Does Lahiri Present Examples Of Unexpected Events In...
The train accident is a masterful example of the unexpected events in life and how different characters
in the novel react to them. This passage ultimately acts as a prompt for the immigration of Ashoke
Ganguli which consequently enables him begin a new life in America. The first aspect of this passage
is it s allusion to The Overcoat . Lahiri introduces the protagonist of this story in the line Immersed in
the sartorial plight of Akaky Akakyevich, lost in the wide, snow white, windy avenues of St.

bodies. Anaphoric use of he remembers emphasises the impactful blow this accident has bestowed
upon Ashoke s memories and the uncontrollable trauma which continues to haunt him afterwards and
throughout the course of the novel. While there is not one explicit description to wards the current
thoughts and emotions of Ashoke, there really is no need for explicit since the devastating mood of the

High Population In Prison Essay
The High Price of Prison The United States spends $80 billion on incarcerating inmates per year. The
government is spending more money on keeping an inmate imprisoned in relation to educating
elementary/secondary school students. The government continues to spend more money on
imprisoning people and cutting funds from important societal needs, including education. When funds
get taken away, the amount of opportunities for others become limited. The United States should
decrease the amount of money spent on incarcerating inmates because there are more effective options
to prevent the high population of people in jail. The U.S. should increase the amount of money spent
on education/other methods to reduce the population in prison because the price of incarcerating

should change their policy for low level offenses because it creates over population in prisons
throughout America. Although the crime rate has decreased by 45%, the population in prison
continues to increase. This is because there are so many prisoners in jail for low level offenses.
According to Picchi of CBS News, Changes in how America deals with low level crimes such as drug
offenses mean the country now has an incarceration rate of 710 inmates per 100,000 residents,
compared with the typical rate of 115 amount nations in the Organization for Economic Co Operation
and Development . Rather than over crowding prisons with people who committed low level crimes,
the U.S. can create a more logical alternative. They can replace jail time with mandatory weekly
classes to help fix their addiction or bad habits. They can also be placed on parole in order to ensure
their safety and the safety of others. This will clear the jail and leave room for those who have
committed high level crimes. It is easily justified to put someone in jail who has committed a violence
offense, but it is not as easily said about someone who has committed a low level crime, such as

Mental Illnesses In College Campuses
Colleges provide a unique opportunity to identify, prevent, or treat mental disorders because campuses
often encompass students residences, social networks, and many services, writes Linda Cook. Often, if
a student is struggling, campus resources are the first place they turn. Whether a student turns to a
professor, campus clinic staff member, or resident assistant, the hope is that they will be met with
compassion. Colleges and universities should require their staff and students to be well informed
about common mental illnesses that often emerge in the college years. Awareness of signs and
symptoms, available treatments and resources, and proper ways to intervene can help fight the mental
health crisis. Yet many colleges still improperly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a study that measured how much knowledge college students possessed when it came to their
campus mental health resources 37 percent of responders said they did not have enough information
about their campus s mental health resources to contact them. 30 percent of responders said they had
never heard of the services available at their campus. 38 percent said they had heard about the services
but knew nothing about them (Yorgason et al.). Awareness of campus resources is low, partly because
of stigma, but also, perhaps, because colleges are not raising enough awareness. A simple flyer
advertising mental health resources available on campus could save a life. The link to the counseling
center being present on the university s homepage, rather than being buried beneath information about
summer classes and tips for graduate papers, could stop one student from dropping out. A simple
mention of the counseling center at freshman orientation could motivate a student to seek out the help
that they deserve. Colleges and universities have the obligation to maintain their image, but they also
have an obligation to their students to make them aware of the resources they can make use of. Many
colleges and universities now offer an Active Minds group. Active Minds is a

The Death Of A Railway Section Man Essay
When William married 17 year old Orrville native Margaret on October 15, 1917, he was like his dad
a railway section man in Falding. Indeed, 3 out of the 5 boys Milo and Eliza had would at some time
work for CNR. Clearly dad was useful in getting employment for his sons. After marriage the couple
resided in Gordon Bay on Lake Joseph. There they fell so ill of the Spanish Flu that sister Ethel had to
temporarily take up residence with them in Mid June of 1919 to see them through. As William gained

Davy from Beaverton a town just south of Washago and where William s sister Edith had been living
for 12 years as Mrs. Morrison. The marriage occurred on May 5, 1928 in Beaverton and they
continued to live in Washago through WWII. William dabbled on the side, for a time, in selling dry

The Contributions of St. Augustine and Brigid of Kildare to Christianity
St. Augustine and Bridgid of Kildare were two very influential people in the church during the fourth
and fifth centuries. St. Augustine and Bridgid of Kildare were most famous for the monasteries that
they founded. Both St. Augustine and Bridgid were devout Christians who contributed greatly to the
growth of Christianity. Both of these people encouraged the spread of Christianity, the belief in a life
of solitude, and inspired many to follow in their footsteps. I admire both St. Augustine and Bridgid of

Augustine s father was a local Roman official and pagan, until he converted shortly before dying.
Monica, Augustine s mother, was a devout Christian and tried to raise her son as one also. Augustine
was a natural born leader in school, but at the age of sixteen he was forced to leave because his father
could no longer pay the tuition fees. Augustine turned to alcohol, gambling, and prostitutes. A year
later Augustine was able to return to school and studied law. When his studies were completed at the
age of eighteen he became a teacher. Augustine, despite his mother s wishes for him to be a Christian,
became a Manichaean. Manichaeans believed that one god created good and another created evil, and
that therefore no one was responsible for his or her sins. Monica fervently prayed for her son s
conversion, but he was stubborn and refused to do so. A year later, while teaching in Milan, Augustine
met Plato and Bishop Ambrose.
Soon Manichaeism became increasingly dissatisfying for Augustine. He became fascinated with the
teachings of Plato and was soon convinced that there was a single god. Augustine even began
attending mass to hear Ambrose preach. It seemed as if Augustine was working to reform his life, but
soon his lust took over and he reverted back to his previous ways. Augustine continued to teach, but
his heart and soul felt empty.
One day while sitting outside he heard a group of children chanting. Suddenly inspired by their

Running Burn Belly Fat Essay
Does Running Burn Belly Fat Well, does running burn belly fat or are you just getting your heart rate

weight is to go on a diet and buy a pair of running shoes. Yeah, you purchase those great looking new
running shoes and then set out to run a marathon because you could stand to lose 30 pounds and
running a marathon is on your bucket list, so why not? No doubt that marathons are a great motivator
to keep running and that the number of 26 mile events out there seems to double every year. However,

tighten their tummy and they are simply wrong. Fat loss is one of the last benefits associated with
steady long distance running. Does Running Burn Belly Fat or Cause Injuries? When one looks at the
number of people who start training for marathons and triathlons, the injury rate is staggering. Stress
fractures, shin splints, respiratory and heart issues can become a problem. Not because running is bad
for you, rather because the last time you got up and ran was probably during 10th grade gym.
Completing an endurance race is a great goal, but it should be something you work toward after
completing a few 5K walk/run races. Furthermore, you should get to know a few marathon racers and
talk to them about developing an endurance running workout strategy. Why Doesn t Running Burn
Belly Fat? Mainly because it becomes predictable to the body. That s right, a well known study
revealed that interval training (i.e mixing it up) is a more effective in weight loss than steady long
distance running. In fact the study revealed that those who trained utilizing interval training lost as

Essay on Sweatshops
Sweatshops in the United States
Americans love to shop. With malls everywhere you go, shopping just might be America s favorite
past time! When you are out shopping though, do you ever stop to think where all of those clothes and
shoes come from? When I was younger, well, actually until recently, I always thought they were all
made by machines. Shirt machines, pants machines amp;#8230;you get the picture. I have learned,
however, that for the most part, clothes are still made on sewing machines, by people, and often under
circumstances that we can only imagine.
Sweatshops have always been a problem in the Unites States, especially during the past century.

In some cases, I ve learned, with brute force. On August 2, 1995, the Department of Labor raided a
factory in El Monte, California. There they found 72 garment workers, mostly Thai and Mexican
immigrants, being forced to work 17 hours a day at wages between $.60 and $1.60 and hour. They
were literally held captive at the factory by barbwire and armed guards. Employees were threatened
with rape and violence if they attempted escape. The El Monte sweatshop was finally discovered when
an employee escaped through a ventilation shaft.
In many sweatshops, however, the workers are there voluntarily. Even the meager wages earned are
more than the undocumented immigrants workers would earn in their home countries. As long as there
is a supply of willing workers, sweatshops will flourish.
So what can be done? How can the sweatshop problem in the United States be resolved? Is there even
a plausible solution? Through my research for this speech I have discovered that everyone seems to
have a solution, yet putting the solutions into action is another thing altogether.
Of the many solutions to the problem, the main, and most obvious solution, is government regulation.
The Department of Labor monitors the garment industry, but with 800 inspectors for 22,000 garment
contractors, in addition to 6 million American

American Involvement In The United States Essay
The role of the United States now should be less involved with other countries because the United
State gets involved with other places too quickly even if it is right or wrong. Our country also takes
land that will benefit us more than others all for the wrong reasons. Also we are going head on head
with other countries for power and while fighting for power other groups are evolving from conflicts.
The United States gets involved in other countries even if it is not necessary. According to Mark

We did this because we wanted to be able to trade sugar with them and have a navel base. Geography
Cuba was in a great location. In Fidel Castro s offer with the United States he said that the United
States should resume sugar purchase from Cuba. The trade between these two places turned out to
benefit both but without us taking control over Cuba and saying we were helping them then none of
the trade would happened. Once we came into Cuba to help we pushed the people in a portion on the
land they could have and took the rest for our own good.
In present day now we still have problems with power between countries now. In an article by Toby
Craig Jones he starts out saying how the in the Middle East the oil production has enchanted global
powers and the United States has been particularly powerful. It is surprising on how we are the ones in
power even though we aren t the ones producing the oil. All this oil production is happening in the
Middle East where Americans aren t really liked because we had troops their taking control of things.
From being over there more and more terrorist groups are rising trying to take over the power. All
countries are fighting for the same thing, power.
Overall, the role of the United States should be less involved due to past and present events. Not only
do we do thing for all the wrong reasons people still support them even of it going against their

have to look for these clues, call in a professional company such as Greystone Roofing to check out
the roof. They can inspect the roof to see if an entire roof is needed, or if the roof that s on the roof can
be repaired.
Repair or replace
If a few shingles have blown off during a storm, or if there s a small leak in one area, replacing is an
economical option. It also makes the most sense. After all, why incur the expense of installing a new
roof if there are only a couple of shingles that need to be replaced.
In some cases one section of a roof may be damaged. Perhaps, a tree limb has fallen on an area of the
roof which resulted in damage to 1/4 of the roof. This is another time when repairing may be the more
favorable option. However, if the roof is older and will need replacing soon many homeowners opt for

Giger were significant as he revolutionized the outlook in surrealism. His work was classified under
Magic Realism, however his contemporaries such as Ernst Fuchs were drastically different as the
trend were to create positive, fantasy artworks. Fuchs style utilizes vivid imagery of many colour
tones to communicate his thoughts. (Fig. 8) However, the two artists shared some similarities, as they
expressed their envisioned world through the use of life, death, and spiritual elements. The
comparison of the two is interesting as Ernst Fuch s artwork captures the positive outlook of life
through the use of heavy natural elements. H.R. Giger is on the opposite side of the spectrum, as he
uses natural elements to heighten our senses of fear. Giger harnesses our natural senses of fear through
the use of familiar imagery such as bones, representing death along with the gruesomeness of drooling
slime, demonstrated in Aliens (Fig. 9). To keep a realistic approach of an alien invasion in the observer
s minds, he implemented realistic themes of invasion and reproduction as a reinterpretation of the
activities humans act upon each other to survive. These concepts were clearly demonstrated in the face
hugger encounter scene as it began to invade the astronaut s body (Fig. 10). Along with the creation of
the alien, this scene was an excellent demonstration Giger s understanding of spatial composition
through the use of materiality and natural elements (Fig. 11). Along

On December 15th, 2014, Uber implemented price surging, that charged its users a minimum $100

riders were absolutely not satisfied with the company s response. A driver complained to Mashable
that he understood the way the business worked higher the demand, higher the charge but four times at
$100 minimum was ridiculous. Then after about an hour, Uber shifted into reverse tone, began

Comparing Vincent Van Gogh s Starry Night And The Slave Ship
Similar, Yet Different.
Romanticism and The post impressionism era are two major periods on the time line of art history.
Different forms of art including paintings, music, and architecture showed tremendous growth, and
ended up making history. This essay compares and contrasts pieces of work such as Vincent van Gogh
s Starry Night and Joseph Mallord William Turner s The Slave Ship. These two pieces both represent
their own individual time periods, yet have similar characteristics. Both of these paintings have a way
of uncovering a story without using a single word. Vincent van Gogh Starry Night, 1889, Post
impressionism, Oil on canvas, 29 x 36 ¼ in, Museum of Modern Art, NYC
This piece of art which will be referred to as image number one is called Starry Night by Vincent Van
Gogh. It is an oil on canvas painting that was completed in 1889 in an Asylum at Saint Remy. This
imagine was created during the post impressionism era, and today is now one of the most well known
paintings in modern culture. This painting is approximately 29 x 36 ¼ in and hangs in the Museum of

It was painted and completed by Joseph Mallord William Turner in England around 1820 and is an oil
on canvas painting created during the romanticism era. The story behind this piece is, when a slave
ship set out on a voyage they would pack the ships full of slaves, and along the way the slaves would
get sick and die so the crew would throw them over board to avoid paying cargo tax. In the painting
viewers see a satanic sky and dark murky water with limbs sticking out of it (Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston). The brush strokes are all sort of slanted down to the right and some are even curled to depict
waves that look to be swallowing up the slaves as well as the ship. This painting is very sublime
because it has beautiful colors and form yet the meaning behind it all is

Essay about Italian and Northern European Renaissance
Italian and Northern European Renaissance
The Italian and Northern Europe Renaissances were both an important mark in history by changing
the ideals of life, thought, culture, and art of the people s of this time. In this paper I will explain the
motive for change in these cultures, including the similarities and differences of the two cultures. The
Italian and Northern European Renaissance was the marking point for leaving behind the old ways and
moving into the more classical ideals and civilizations for Italy and Northern Europe. However,
Northern Europe developed their ideals more slowly then Italy did. For one thing, the north held on to

The classical aspects were used to humanize the Christian and secular buildings. The High
Renaissance in Italy, although short lived, was extremely important on the influences of future Italian
art. During the High Renaissance the main focus on Florence, for the arts, shifted to Rome due to the
power and wealth from the popes. Because of the move from Florence to Rome, the two most
important factors of this time, Classicism and Christianity, were merged into one. Italian ideas were
also brought northward through trade and commerce into Europe, where they had a tremendous
amount of influence on the artistic traditions there as well (Benton amp; DiYanni, 2008). Both the
Italian and Northern European Renaissance had interest in changing their ideals in individualism,
humanism, and classicism, which has a large impact on their cultures, and arts. Many of the literary
works of this time expressed the same interests between Italy and Northern Europe. Examples can be
seen in the writings of Petrarch (Italian) and Michel de Montaigne (Northern European). Both of these
writers expressed the importance and idealism of humanism. The literature during this time was a
wonderful looking glass into the similarities and differences of Italy and Northern Europe. After
looking at the Italian and Northern Europe Renaissances, one can see the many similarities between
the arts and cultures, but the differences of these cultures are not

Louisiana Purchase History
What would most people do with 15 million dollars? Take a nice vacation, or buy a nice beach front
property? Buying a huge lump of unexplored, and undocumented land most likely wouldn t be anyone
s first pick. However, it was Thomas Jefferson s, when buying the Louisiana territory. The Louisiana
Purchase was significant to American History and it led to the Civil War. The purchase was significant
to America, because it nearly doubled the young nation s size at a extremely cheap price, and allowed
many western settlers to build their homes and use the resources provided by the land. Also, the
purchase led into the Civil War, due to its controversy, and whether or not slavery should be allowed

As much as the purchase brought promise and opportunity, it also brought a lot of stress upon a nation
on the verge of a civil war. During this time period, tensions were building between people who
believed in slavery, and others who did not. When this new land mass was introduced to our country,
the people and the government immediately began the battle over the legalization of slavery in the
territory. This controversy, was propelling us further into the Civil War. The battle over slavery was
only half of the problem. The other half, came in the form of political party disagreements. The
democrats believed in giving more power to the states, and the federalists believed in more power to
the federal government. Thomas Jefferson s decision to purchase the land essentially disregarded his
basic views as a democrat and made many people furious. In closing, the stress on our shaken nation,
along with the ferocity of the people, rocketed our nation into the Civil War.
Mixed emotions and reactions came from the people during the time of the Louisiana Purchase, as it

Essay On Due Process
The term due process of law is in the 5th amendment of the U.S Constitution. It states No person shall
. . . be deprived of life, liberty or property, without due process of law (The V Amendment of the U. S

Constitution. This term means that it s a constitutional law that is guaranteed that every citizen gets
every legal proceeding. They will be treated equal and the individual will be noticed of those
proceedings, the individual is given the chance to be heard before the government does take life,

right to speedy trial, to a public trial, to be judged by an impartial jury, right to know the accusers are

Dora Maar s Bust Of A Woman
Pablo Picasso s muse of almost ten years, Dora Maar, was depicted many times throughout his
paintings and sculptures (Riding). In his 1941 oil on canvas painting, Bust of a Woman (Dora Maar),
Picasso looked to his muse once again for inspiration. Neither one of Picasso s most famous, nor best
paintings, Bust of a Woman still tells a story of the time and place of a tumultuous artist muse
relationship encapsulated by Picasso s surrealist expression in Nazi occupied France during World
War II. On its face, Bust of a Woman appears secular Dora Maar is not obviously representative of any
sort of entity. However, Picasso did place her on a pedestal for a time and I wonder if he intentionally
back lit her, painting the light around her head and hair to depict a light aura or halo effect (Picasso).
In the top left corner of the room, the diagonal lines look like a spotlight in motion, beaming down

Examples Of Confidence In Bud Not Buddy
What is confidence? I believe confidence is how you get things that seem impossible, at first, done. In
Bud not Buddy, Bud had a lot of self confidence in finding his family across the state of Michigan, so
he decided to walk clean across it. With the confidence to start the journey, Bud got to where he
wanted to go. Without confidence, he would ve never been able to reach his family and be happy with
Herman E. Calloway and the band members. Therefore, since Bud had the self confidence to find his
dad, he was able to be happy at the end with the band members and his grandpa.
The author uses many literary tools to explain the meaning of confidence in Bud not Buddy. One
literary tool used on page 59 is that Bud s mom had said when

children of special rights in these schools it was important to learn about the history. We learned that
in 1968 children with special rights were welcomed to attend the Reggio Emilia preschools. This is
only five years after the first preschool was created. I thought this was completely amazing since in

Public Administration And The Public Sector
Old Public Administration was created to answer the questions to many unanswered problems.
President Woodrow Wilson said it was harder to run a constitution than to frame it because of the
difficult administrative tasks had to deal with. Sure enough, he was not the only person who felt that
way. President Wilson believed that in order to run an effective government, ideas from the private
sector should be incorporated into the public sector. He even went as far as to give input on how the
government would be able to implement ideas from the private sector to the public sector. And that is
to limit what hierarchical organization can do. Wilson believed that those in power would not have
control of creating the policy, but they will have a handle on how the policy is implemented. Two
themes stood out around the topic of Public Administration the distinction between policy and
administration, and the accountability of elected individuals who are a part of an organization. The
second theme was around the use of structures and strategies to ensure that management work
efficiency.
Many had much to say when it came Wilson s statement that Policy and Administration should be
separate entities. A few people argued that policy and administration could not be separated because
policy and administration depend on one another to work effectively. Frederick Taylor, a theorist
believed that in order to enforce efficiency within an organization, a scientific management

issues that typically are discussed with a lot of tension from the feminist of the world. Some of these
issues include gender inequalities and gender norms. The short story that I decided to read and write
about is Bloodchild which is based on a romantic and controlling relationship with humans and outer

Theme Of Time In A Rose For Emily
In A Rose for Emily, Faulkner uses the aspect of time to accentuate details of the setting and vice
versa. By disregarding the chronological order of development of Miss Emily s life, at first Faulkner
gives the reader a finished complexity, and then allows the reader to examine this puzzle step by step,
piece by piece. By doing this, he enhances the plot and portrays two different angles of time held by
the characters. The first perspective, the world as the present, shows time as a progression and the past
is a shrinking road. The second perspective, the world of tradition and the past, views the past as a
huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches, divided from them now by the narrow bottleneck of
the most recent decade of years. (5) The first perspective is based on Homer and the modern
generation. The second is based on confederate soldiers and the older members of the Board of
Aldermen. Emily holds the second view too, however for her there is no bottleneck separating her
from the meadow of the past.
Faulkner starts off the story with Miss Emily s funeral, where the men see her as a fallen monument
(1) and the women are curious about the inside of her house. He draws a picture of a woman who is
fragile because she has fallen, but still symbolic and important like a monument. The particulars of
Miss Emily s house are very similar to her and symbolize what she stands for. It is set on what had
once been the most select street. (1) The narrator, which is the

Analysis Of Heidegger s Building Dwelling Thinking
After the destruction in Germany due to the World War 2, the struggle for survival and inhabitation
had been the most and immediate business for the people. The war caused the destruction of near one
fifth of the German houses between 1939 and 1945. In West Germany, there were required almost two
and a half million houses for the refugees and another million for younger families. It was where the
German philosopher Martin Heidegger s Freiburg and Black forest were located. People shared
accommodation there till they could find their own. Then arose the question of termed as
Wohnungsfrage that means Dwelling Question due to this housing crisis. In its response Heidegger
wrote his famous Building Dwelling Thinking .

In his essay, Heidegger discusses the type of dwelling which is poetic in a sense. He then questions
further that are the dwellings poetic in a true sense if yes then are other dwellings incompatible with
the poetic ones? He further questions about the coexistence of the man s social and historical life. For
Heidegger, poetry is the things that let the man dwell and dwelling is through building. He believes
that art of building is very much similar to the art of poetry. The way the verses in a poem depict a
simple fact in a really creative way is same as that of the technique of constructing a building and then
making the building alive by dwelling in that particular building. This philosophy of Heidegger is
reflected in his architectural design sense that he connects the building styles with human life. This
poem tends to remove the misconceptions that poems snatch away the realities of this world or poetry
is mere fantasy but it s not like that. Actually, poetry brings fantasy to life. Same as the opposing

The New Healthcare Reform Essay
The United States healthcare system has failed Americans because the government has treated it as
though only the wealthy should be taken care of. Universal Healthcare has benefited industrialized
countries like Sweden, France, and Canada because they recognize the fact that healthcare should be a
human right, and not a privilege. The debate continues over whether the reform will benefit the people
and not put the government into greater debt while politicians are raising the constitutional flag on the

  • 4. The Process Of Interpersonal Communication Provisionalism in My World The skill I am going to discuss is provisionalism. According to Interplay, the Process of Interpersonal Communication provisionalism means a supportive style of communication in which a sender expresses open mindness to others ideas and opinions (G 9). Open mindness as is willingness to consider new ideas. I think provisionalism means to create a positive conversation that will not turn off the other party and encourages an open mind. Gibb notes in Interplay, the Process of Interpersonal Communication that provisionalism surfaces through words such as perhaps, maybe, might, possibly and may (p331). In learning about this skill I can improve my word choices to connect with people that I may have turned off by not using provisionalism. In open mindness a person will listen to another opinion even though they have already made up their mind. When using Provisionalism you create a more positive conversation by avoiding statements of certainty. Both parties will usually be more apt to continue conversation and are more likely to consider another s point of view. Gibb notes: One reduces the defensiveness of the listener when one communicates that one is willing to experiment with one s own behavior, attitudes and ideas. The person who appears to be taking provisional attitudes, to be investigating issues rather than taking sides on them, to be problem solving rather than doubting, and to be willing to experiment and explore tends to ... Mental Illnesses In College Campuses Colleges provide a unique opportunity to identify, prevent, or treat mental disorders because campuses often encompass students residences, social networks, and many services, writes Linda Cook. Often, if a student is struggling, campus resources are the first place they turn. Whether a student turns to a professor, campus clinic staff member, or resident assistant, the hope is that they will be met with compassion. Colleges and universities should require their staff and students to be well informed about common mental illnesses that often emerge in the college years. A simple flyer advertising mental health resources available on campus could save a life. The link to the counseling center being present on the university s homepage, rather than being buried beneath information about summer classes and tips for graduate papers, could stop one student from dropping out. Stress fractures, shin splints, respiratory and heart issues can become a problem. Not because running is bad for you, rather because the last time you got up and ran was probably during 10th grade gym. Completing an endurance race is a great goal, but it should be something you work toward after completing a few 5K walk/run races. Furthermore, you should get to know a few marathon racers and talk to them about developing an endurance running workout strategy. Why Doesn t Running Burn Belly Fat? They were literally held captive at the factory by barbwire and armed guards. Employees were threatened with rape and violence if they attempted escape. Even the meager wages earned are more than the undocumented immigrants workers would earn in their home countries. As long as there is a supply of willing workers, sweatshops will flourish. So what can be done? How can the sweatshop problem in the United States be resolved? Is there even a plausible solution? Through my research for this speech I have discovered that everyone seems to have a solution, yet putting the solutions into action is another thing altogether. The comparison of the two is interesting as Ernst Fuch s artwork captures the positive outlook of life through the use of heavy natural elements. H.R. Giger is on the opposite side of the spectrum, as he uses natural elements to heighten our senses of fear. Giger harnesses our natural senses of fear through the use of familiar imagery such as bones, representing death along with the gruesomeness of drooling slime, demonstrated in Aliens (Fig. 9). To keep a realistic approach of an alien invasion in the observer s minds, he implemented realistic themes of invasion and reproduction as a reinterpretation of the activities humans act upon each other to survive. These concepts were clearly demonstrated in the face hugger encounter scene as it began to invade the astronaut s body (Fig. 10). President Woodrow Wilson said it was harder to run a constitution than to frame it because of the difficult administrative tasks had to deal with. Sure enough, he was not the only person who felt that way. President Wilson believed that in order to run an effective government, ideas from the private sector should be incorporated into the public sector. He even went as far as to give input on how the government would be able to implement ideas from the private sector to the public sector. And that is to limit what hierarchical organization can do. Wilson believed that those in power would not have control of creating the policy, but they will have a handle on how the policy is implemented. Two themes stood out around the topic of Public Administration the distinction between policy and administration, and the accountability of elected individuals who are a part of an organization. The second theme was around the use of structures and strategies to ensure that management work efficiency. Many had much to say when it came Wilson s statement that Policy and Administration should be separate entities. A few people argued that policy and administration could not be separated because policy and administration depend on one another to work effectively. Frederick Taylor, a theorist believed that in order to enforce efficiency within an organization, a scientific management ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Empathy Belly Analysis Empathy Belly Experience When I first put the empathy belly on I felt a whole bunch of weight hit my stomach and I had to catch my breath for a moment. Plus, the breast part of the thing was putting pressure against mine and it kind of hurt a little. For a second I was scared to move because I didn t want to fall over. I was trying to imagine how much more it would be if we had to carry all the weight. My first thoughts to walking with it on was Wow, this is really heavy. I felt a lot of pressure on my stomach and lower back. I couldn t walk at my normal pace, I had to walk slower. I felt like I had to slightly drag myself in order to move. I barely took 4 steps and I struggled to go any faster. I had many challenges throughout the time period of wearing it. The first challenge was walking, the longer I had it on the slower I got at walking because of all the weight on my back. Another challenge was the stairs, every time I walked up the stairs I felt like the weight was going to knock me backwards or cause me to miss a step. Then, when I was going down the stairs, I felt like I was going to fall forward or slip. I had to hold on to the railings as I walked on them. Another challenge would be sitting in the desks. The belly was too big to completely sit in the desk facing forward, so I had to sit sideways and turn my body in order to write or look up at the board. • 37. Octavia Butler Bloodchild Summary Octavia Butler, an African American author who uses her writing abilities to instill awareness through a unique form of science fiction. Each of her novels and stories address issues and topics that address issues that typically are discussed with a lot of tension from the feminist of the world. Some of these issues include gender inequalities and gender norms. The short story that I decided to read and write about is Bloodchild which is based on a romantic and controlling relationship with humans and outer space creatures. This author switches the roles of the characters to opposite of societal norms. The male character has the role of the female, so he is required to give birth and the female character has taken the place of the male and has taken on the impregnating actions. Butler does this to make the harsh truth, easier to understand and comprehend. She wants to paint the picture of the wall men have around women in society. She often made people feel trapped. whole left row of T Gatoi s limbs closed around her, holding her loosely, but securely...no one else in the family liked it. They said it made them feel caged (Butler 3). This feeling that Butler described is the same some women feel throughout their lives due to not being able to make their own choices about how to live their lives. Instead society tells them what is needed to be done as a woman not what is needed for themselves. Many women go through this oppression without even knowing it. Society had forced women to overlook the way they are treated because the world we live in is male based driven. • 38. Theme Of Time In A Rose For Emily In A Rose for Emily, Faulkner uses the aspect of time to accentuate details of the setting and vice versa. By disregarding the chronological order of development of Miss Emily s life, at first Faulkner gives the reader a finished complexity, and then allows the reader to examine this puzzle step by step, piece by piece. By doing this, he enhances the plot and portrays two different angles of time held by the characters. The first perspective, the world as the present, shows time as a progression and the past is a shrinking road. The second perspective, the world of tradition and the past, views the past as a huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches, divided from them now by the narrow bottleneck of the most recent decade of years. (5) The first perspective is based on Homer and the modern generation. The second is based on confederate soldiers and the older members of the Board of Aldermen. Emily holds the second view too, however for her there is no bottleneck separating her from the meadow of the past. Faulkner starts off the story with Miss Emily s funeral, where the men see her as a fallen monument (1) and the women are curious about the inside of her house. He draws a picture of a woman who is fragile because she has fallen, but still symbolic and important like a monument. The particulars of Miss Emily s house are very similar to her and symbolize what she stands for. It is set on what had once been the most select street. (1) The narrator, which is the ... • 41. Analysis Of Heidegger s Building Dwelling Thinking After the destruction in Germany due to the World War 2, the struggle for survival and inhabitation had been the most and immediate business for the people. The war caused the destruction of near one fifth of the German houses between 1939 and 1945. In West Germany, there were required almost two and a half million houses for the refugees and another million for younger families. It was where the German philosopher Martin Heidegger s Freiburg and Black forest were located. People shared accommodation there till they could find their own. Then arose the question of termed as Wohnungsfrage that means Dwelling Question due to this housing crisis. In its response Heidegger wrote his famous Building Dwelling Thinking . Building Dwelling Thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his essay, Heidegger discusses the type of dwelling which is poetic in a sense. He then questions further that are the dwellings poetic in a true sense if yes then are other dwellings incompatible with the poetic ones? He further questions about the coexistence of the man s social and historical life. For Heidegger, poetry is the things that let the man dwell and dwelling is through building. He believes that art of building is very much similar to the art of poetry. The way the verses in a poem depict a simple fact in a really creative way is same as that of the technique of constructing a building and then making the building alive by dwelling in that particular building. This philosophy of Heidegger is reflected in his architectural design sense that he connects the building styles with human life. This poem tends to remove the misconceptions that poems snatch away the realities of this world or poetry is mere fantasy but it s not like that. Actually, poetry brings fantasy to life. Universal Healthcare has benefited industrialized countries like Sweden, France, and Canada because they recognize the fact that healthcare should be a human right, and not a privilege. The debate continues over whether the reform will benefit the people and not put the government into greater debt while politicians are raising the constitutional flag on the reform, stating it is not constitutional to make it law that all Americans have health insurance. Medical providers still remain private but the government run program funds the insurance. The maximum amount a Swede can pay in one year is $108 and $156 for prescriptions (Astor, 2010). Universal healthcare sounds like an obvious way to go yet it still has not been introduced into America. Receiving healthcare should be a basic right that all Americans deserve yet are still denied. The new reform will help with low income citizens get the care they deserve but will still leave many uninsured. Healthcare can be considered a basic right or commerce, which it has been in the new reform. The government has the right to regulate commerce among several states and is choosing to do so with health insurance. The taxing of individuals and companies is what makes health insurance commerce. Should the government be allowed to control healthcare and is it against the constitution to do so?
