Leading Change
Book Review
Leading Change by John Kotter 1996
Review by Chris Shea
John P. Kotter is internationally known and widely regarded as the foremost speaker on the topics of
leadership and change. He is the premier voice on how the best organizations actually achieve
successful transformations. The Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus at the
Harvard Business School and a graduate of MIT and Harvard, Kotter s vast experience and knowledge
on successful change and leadership have been proven time and time again. The book Leading Change
looks at an eight stage process for implementing successful transformations in today s firms as well as
the eight errors that are common to change efforts. The ideas and methods in this book ... Show more

To avoid these hazards and capitalize on the opportunities the companies of today need to become
stronger competitors. To become the 21st century organization that will succeed some of the
transformations needed include reengineering, restructuring, quality programs, mergers and
acquisitions and strategic and cultural change. Useful change is often associated with a multi step
process that creates power and motivation significant enough to overwhelm all the sources of inertia
and driven by high quality leadership and not just management. Kotter states that the eight steps
required to produce successful change are; (1) Establishing a sense of urgency; (2)Creating the
guiding coalition; (3) Developing a vision and strategy; (4) Communicating the change vision; (5)
Empowering broad based action; (6) Generating short term wins; (7) Consolidating gains and
producing more change; (8) Anchoring new approaches in the culture. Kotter goes on to suggest the
first four steps in the process serve to defrost a hardened status quo, steps five to seven introduce new
practices and the last phase grounds the change in the corporate culture. It s important to go through
all of the steps in sequence however normally one operates in multiple phases at once. To skip a step
or get to far ahead without the establishment of a solid base will almost always lead to problems.

The Interpretation Of Miss Havisham, By Carol Ann Duffy
The author intends to illustrate that Curley s wife s life was lonely in the sense that women during the
Great Depression. In the context of time, because of a high rate of unemployment, women were
treated as clerks, who had much a lower social status than men. Steinbeck wants to portray the causes
and effects of isolation on Curley s wife as a representative of the women living at that time, through
his personal experience in working in ranches during the Great Depression.
Similarly, the persona in Havisham is presented by Carol Ann Duffy as an isolated and bitter woman
who suffers internally. Duffy highlights the anger and jealousy which contribute to her torments due to
gender. Duffy adopts an exasperated and resentful tone to portray Miss ... Show more content on

Duffy reinforces the ways in which Miss Havisham has suffered over the years using the metaphor of
dark green pebbles which echoes the sense of jealousy. It suggests the way Miss Havisham is feeling,
her compassion for others has hardened like pebbles. Duffy also uses imagery to present the passing of
time. She presents the veins in Miss Havisham s hands as ropes. This underlines that Miss Havisham
has become an old lady. The rope suggests knots and the twisted feelings she has, the contradiction in
her mind and the love and hate relationship Miss Havisham has towards the man who dumped her. It
can also be inferred as how Miss Havisham has hardened over the years. The poet s focus on her pain
is also explored in the use of personification, where she describes Miss Havisham cawing nooooo ,
making her seem like an animal begging for mercy, this is suggesting her unwillingness to accept the
fact that she is never going to see the man again. The isolated feeling in the poem is skilfully
illustrated by Duffy describing Miss Havisham s grief and pain. Duffy s portrayal of the love and hate
relationship Miss Havisham has towards the man is suggested by the oxymoron of

Review Of The Lord Of The Black Sands
Spoiler (Click to Hide)
Eckhart felt sick, as he usually did when entering the castle. As loyal as he was to the Lord of the
Black Sands, something dark crawled and writhed about inside him whenever he was in the man s
presence. Not that Eckhart was a perfect or even moral man under any definitions, but Gammon, the
Demon Lord, took being evil to extremes that made even the most heartless and bloodthirsty men
cringe. Inside, the castle s floor and walls were a dense black material that seemed to absorb the
lighting from the braziers positioned every few feet in the hallways and took every inch of heat from
within the walls as well. Stifling a shiver, his metal bound boots made heavy clinking sounds on the
polished obsidian as he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Madness filled that grin as he stared at the general fiendishly, his youthful features, well groomed with
golden eyeshadow and dark eyeliner making him look almost feminine, if not for the heavy brow
ridge and large nose that dominated his face. The velvet cloak he wore draped over him, all the way to
the ground, shoulders topped with spikes and large feathers, and elegant, manly hands emerging from
the sleeves with long, pointed nails on each finger. His exposed stomach and chest were slender yet
muscled, a thin trail of dark hair dusting above his groin, disappearing beneath his trousers, and a
golden ring put through his right nipple glistened in the available light. The entire package was
alluring, tempting and sensual and yet at the same time made him feel sick with fear and shame.
Without missing a beat during his quiet inspection, he answered, his deep voice, normally making
other men seem girlish in comparison now seemed unnatural and bizarre when compared to the
Demon s multiple voices. We have overtaken the Gillians and the Welks and have squashed all
rebellions in their territories. Our forces are moving steadily north and we should reach the capital by
the Tide months, as planned, my Lord.

Agile Development Methods And Cmmi ( Capability Maturity...
Abstract Agile development methods and CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) best
practices are often perceived to be at odds with each other. This paper provides arguments to point out
that CMMI and Agile can work toward deriving benefit from using both and exploit similarities that
have the potential to improve business performance. 1. Reasons for Discord There are two primary
reasons for the discord between the two process a) Early adopters of both these methods have used
them for purposes which are extremely different. Early CMMI adopters were developing large scale ,
less risky, critical systems , often with high level of management , Where as early adopters of AGILE
methods generally focused on smaller , single team lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such transparent behavior is within all the projects and leads to clear expectations A plausible
explanation for many of the challenges faced by organizations using CMMI is likely the fact that most
processes implemented using CMMI fail to distinguish that CMMI is fundamentally a model. Instead
of viewing CMMI as a model they look at it as a standard. A standard is an auditable, testable,
compliable work with a limited amount of set demonstrable outcomes with little variation between
iterations. This misuse of CMMI as a standard is a complete misuse of the model as CMMI does not
contain any set processes or procedures . They are not activities that necessarily need to occur within a
specific process. They are process oriented activities that when used collectively can reach the process
area and business goals to improve the real life activities of an System CMMI s ultimate goal (i.e.,
continuous process improvement) is to cause an organization to become less wasteful, leaner, and
more in touch with actual development progress. Ultimately, both Agile and CMMI, especially in high
trust environments, expect organizations to see gains in productivity by eliminating unnecessary
effort. 3. Understanding AGILE In general, attributes of successful Agile implementations include the
following aspects small teams ,customer feedback, continuous planning ,co located and cross
functional teams Agile is not successful when the

The Three Branches Of The Constitution
America wouldn t be what it is built up to be today without the Constitution. The Constitution works
because of checks and balances, the three branches of government, and federalism. I also think that the
article V of the constitution that starts to state the amendment process also contributes to the
constitution s success because it makes making a new amendment very difficult. The three branches of
government include the Executive Branch, the Legislative branch, and the Judicial branch. The
Executive Branch includes the President and Vice President to the cabinet members make up this
branch. This branch is responsible for enforcing laws they get there power from the president. The
president is the head of state and also the commander in chief of the armed forces. The cabinet of the
executive branch body is made up of 15 leaders from each agency. The current 15 executive agencies
are the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and human
services, Homeland security, Housing and Urban development, Interior, Justice, Labor, State,
Transportation, Treasury, and Veterans affairs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All legislative power is vested in Congress. The main task of this branch is to make laws while its jobs
include passing laws and originating spending which is done by The House and impeaching officials
and approving treaties which is done by The Senate. The Judicial Branch of government is The
Supreme Court and all the federal courts. The job of this branch of government is to explain laws
under the constitution they also decide if the laws are constitutional. The judges of supreme court are
appointed by the President. There are 9 justices and they are appointed for life. The highest justice is

Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides (Analysis)
Marek Sulich Mr. O Connor American Literature 1 March 2011 Ghost Soldiers The novel, Ghost
Soldiers, written by Hampton Sides, is a great work of literature, depicting the true horrors of war,
friendship, and the one thing that was never lost, hope. The non fictional book takes place in the
Philippines during the Japanese occupation of the islands from 1942 and goes through three gruesome
years to end in the year of 1945. The book begins with the idea of surrendering Bataan, an American
occupied area of the Philippines, because of the severe amount of wounded and very little defense to
last out or defeat the incoming Imperial Army. General Edward King formally surrendered Bataan and
this marked the start of what would be later called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beating had long been an acceptable and routine method of discipline within the Japanese Army.
Soldiers could strike subordinates with no questions asked and no explanation warranted. The slightest
distinction between ranks was of critical importance because it meant the difference between who
could inflict blows, and who could expect to receive them. This sort of institutionalized brutality had a
tendency to work its way down the ranks to the lowliest private. One can imagine what would happen
when an enlisted man, hardened by this psychology of top down violence, found himself suddenly
thrown into a foreign and not altogether distasteful situation in which he was the superior, in charge of
a group of helpless prisoners. For some, the temptation to beat proved irresistible. For others, beating
was only the beginning. (Hampton 91 92) The Japanese soldiers had no sense of remorse or sorrow for
the prisoners instead they pushed them to their breaking point. Many prisoners collapsed which
proved fatal because if you fell behind you became a practice dummy for the Japanese to sharpen their
bayonet skills and techniques of killing on you. On one occasion, a prisoner was falling behind in the
rear so tanks that followed lined themselves up to run over the victim and squish him into the
pavement to make it look as if he were from a cartoon. Since the Japanese could

Opioid Pathogenesis
Emerging evidence indicates that free radicals are involved in the pathogenesis of several digestive
system disorders as well as in the regulation of biological processes such as aging. Previous reports
have indicated that opioids induce apoptosis via stimulating an oxidative stress pathway that is
associated with the production of superoxide and nitric oxide (NO) [11]. NO, together with reactive
oxygen species (ROS), has a pivotal role in the regulation of apoptosis and necrosis in various cells.
Hsiao et al. investigated the role of NO and ROS in the morphine induced apoptosis. They found that
the morphine treatment enhanced apoptosis through both NO and ROS pathways [12]. The inducible
nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) enzyme is one of the most important enzymes involved in the generation
of NO from the amino acid L arginine. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the induction of mu opioid receptor (MOR1) activity can effectively increase
NADH/NADPH mediated ROS synthesis via activating the phospholipase D2 (PLD2) [14]. Then,
NADH/NADPH oxidase is a key downstream enzyme responsible for generating opioid induced ROS.
The role of morphine in the regulating function of NADPH oxidase has been previously demonstrated
[15]. It has been shown that the morphine up regulates the expression of heme oxygenase (HO 1)
which leads to an induced occurrence of macrophage apoptosis and reduced macrophage migration
[16]. Both ROS and MAPK signaling pathways are required for the full induction of HO 1 activity
[17]. Accordingly, the opioids may increase the expression of HO 1 through a ROS and MAPK
dependent manner. The function of some other oxidative stress related enzymes including superoxide
dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is decreased by opioids [18].

The Integration Of Italians Into American Culture
Italian American culture has been immortalized in movies, literature, and songs. One of the movies
that shows the integration of Italians into American culture comes from the 20th century and was well
acclaimed for its acting and cinematography. The 1955 film Marty accurately portrays Italian
American lifestyles and stigmas, specifically males, in that time period and demonstrates how the
Italian people assimilated into American culture.
Getting married was one of the most important things that an Italian man can do. At 35 years old,
Marty has yet to marry or have children, and is living with his mother in his childhood home. In this
time period, it was critical to marry someone who was also Italian. This custom was practiced more
before the time period of Marty but it was still an important factor to consider when picking a bride.
The viewer sees how important this is to Marty s mother, as she asks questions of Clara before church.
Mrs. Pilletti: She s more than twenty nine years old, Marty. That s what she tells you...She looked
thirty five, forty years old. She do not look like an Italian girl...What family she comes from? I do not
know. Something about her I I do not like...The first time you meet the girl, she comes to your empty
house alone. These college girls. They re only one step from the street.
Marty: What are ya talkin about? She s a nice girl.

Pros And Cons Of Deaf
1. Pathological view an individual would downplay or be embarrassed of the fact that they are deaf,
pathological view preaches the use of hearing aids and wanting to fix the problem and focuses a lot on
learning speech, and the pathological view is when an individual thinks that using professional help
such as an interpreter is HELPING the Deaf overcome their handicap so they can live properly in the
hearing world.
Cultural view is when a person is willing and open in acknowledging their deafness, they give a lot
more attention to finding means of communication for the Deaf community at large using visual
devices and services. In the cultural aspect, an individual would think of professional help such as
hiring an interpreter as working alongside a Deaf person to provide equal access to what hearing

The Importance Of A Thorough Home Inspection
A thorough home inspection is one of the most important steps before purchasing a home, and many
buyers try to skip this step only to end up regretting it later when problems become apparent. Your
home is the place you go to get away from the world, and to relax and put your feet up, or spend time
with your family and friends. You want to be reassured that the home you buy is safe and in good
condition. A home inspection can give you this peace of mind, using a visual inspection of every
aspect of the home both inside and out. This should be done by a professional home inspector who has
the education, knowledge, and experience needed to identify problems which may not be readily
apparent.
There are some questions you should ask any prospective home inspection company, and things to
consider, to guarantee you get a thorough and complete inspection. How long has the inspector been
doing these inspections? How many home inspections does the inspector do in a year? How much
experience does the home inspector have inspecting homes identical to the one you are buying? These
questions are important, because without adequate experience the inspector may miss signs of a
hidden problem. Choose a home inspection company that exclusively does only home inspections, and
does not just practice this as a sideline to their day job. Ask about the reports that will be given, will
you get a written report, an oral report, or both? Does the home inspection company have
certification? Do they

Analysis Of Prometheus And The First People By Olivia E....
Prometheus And The First People is a historical work of art written by Olivia E. Coolidge. What the
Greeks believe at the time man was created there was no sorrow or wicked ways, a war was unknown
to man. Zeus entrusted their creation to two brothers, Prometheus and Epimetheus. Epimetheus took
over all things but got forced to appeal to Prometheus for help. Prometheus later was tortured by Zeus
for making humankind like the gods. After centuries Prometheus was released and him, along with the
other gods created woman. Then flooded the earth to kill all evil. This essay will examine, Prometheus

One day her curious mind got the best of her. She opened the box, and all the dark shadows of hunger,
disease, war, greed, anger, jealousy, toil, and all the other hardships man would now have to face
flooded out into the world. Oliva E. Coolidge wrote Prometheus and the First People for a particular
purpose. Oliva wanted people to understand the importance of making a decision. Each choice you
make may not only affect you, but it may affect others. Prometheus decision caused him to be tortured
by Zeus for hundreds of years. Afterwards, it caused the gods to create a woman for man. Each god
gave the woman a special gift. They gave her things like beauty and curiosity, and her curiosity is
what got the best of her. She opened the box the gods told her never to open and flooded out evil into
the world. She caused everyone to experience severe and live it that kind of world. The world filled
with so much evil, murders, robberies, and treachery the gods choose to destroy it. The gods flooded
the Earth sparing only two people, an elderly couple. The old couple was named Deucalion and
Pyrrha, and they were chosen to live because they lived their lives in truth and justice. The two were
too old to recreate more humans, so they prayed to the gods. They ended up gathering stones and
throwing them behind. Each stone Deucalion threw turned into a man and each stone Pyrrha threw a

There are only a few firms that make up this industry and they have control over the price. These
companies have high barriers to entry the market. The products they produce are similar which cause
competition. There is both good and bad when it comes to oligopoly and monopolies. Some good
things about oligopoly are by developing product innovations and taking advantage of economies of
scale. With oligopoly it is more likely to expand production capabilities, promote economic growth,
and they develop change that advances the level of technology ( Oligopoly, 2000). Some bad things
about oligopoly is that they tend to be inefficient in the allocation of resources and promotes the
concentration of income and wealth ( Oligopoly, 2000). They charge much higher prices and end up
producing less of an output than the efficiency benchmark of perfect competition. One of the good
forms is natural monopoly. Natural monopoly exists when economies of scale encourage production
by a single producer (Mayer). An example of this is your local electrical utility. As a power plant
increases, the cost per kilowatt hour of electricity falls (Mayer). If we were to all use small generators
to run our homes the cost of each household would be ridiculous. The total fixed cost of generators for
the community would be high and the variable cost of running it would also be high. Another form of
monopoly that is good is

It was common for the artist to paint several versions of a subject, rethinking the composition and the
quality of the painting in the process; this was the case with Poussin s two paintings of The Abduction
of the Sabine Women , which he created around 1633. Both paintings, with their strongly opposing
diagonals, are illustrations of the dynamic and self confident style that Poussin adopted for many of
his scenes from earliest history. Poussin perhaps used the small stages with wax figures and carefully
arranged curtains, described by his colleagues. In his painting Eliezer and Rebecca at the Well created
in 1648, he used the same technic. In his late works Poussin may well have used such a stage to plan
the rigorous composition of Saints Peter and John Healing the Lame Man ,a painting from about 1655

Judicial Selection Process And The State Of New Jersey
In this writing assignment I will discuss the judicial selection process in the state of Virginia and the
state of New Jersey. I will talk about the specific qualifications needed for each state. I will present a
brief overview of the steps an individual has to learn to become an attorney, which can contribute to a
judgeship. I will also discuss the step of removing a judge from office.
The six steps to become a judge: Step one is to attend undergraduate school, earn a law degree, pass a
Uniform Bar Exam, become a practicing attorney, and obtain a judgeship and complete training. The
Virginia judiciary is composed of the Supreme Court, the court of appeals, the circuit court, and the
district court (Staffer, 2016). The district court has limited jurisdiction. In 1999, the Republican
majority established a joint judicial advisory committee to examine and assess candidates for
vacancies on the Supreme Court and the court of appeals and to provide detailed information to the
general assembly on their qualifications (Staffer, 2016). The local citizen commissions was set up by
the Republican legislators to evaluate the nominees to be on the circuit court and district court.
The legislatives selects the state court judges in Virginia, which is identical to the selection process for
the supreme court, court of appeals and circuit court judges. As outlined in Article VI of the Virginia
Constitution, judges are elected by a majority vote of the Virginia General Assembly

Raymond Carver Cathedral Analysis
Blind to the Blind
To be imaginative is to be a child. As a person ages, he is expected to mature into adulthood and to
live in the real world. He is expected to abandon his childhood dreams and cultivate practicality and
factuality. However, imaginations are not limited to unicorns and dragons; it is a skill a person must
nurture to realize his dreams and desires. To be imaginative is to be a visionary. Without a vision, a
person lacks the sight for compassion, curiosity, and self consciousness. In this sense, imagination is
not only to think outside the box, but also to search deeper inside. In the short story, Cathedral by
Raymond Carver, Carver develops the idea that a lack of imagination limits a person to the physical
and visible world which leads to the blindness to the abstract world and rejection of the uncertain
future. It is when a person opens his eyes to the unseen that he can create emotional connection with
others and discover the profound truth inside himself.
The narrator s lack of imagination leads him to reject what is beyond his visual perception. The
narrator looks at his surroundings plainly as they are and therefore fails to see the deeper meanings
behind it. Throughout the story, the narrator is watching television, which symbolizes his narrow
perspective and his failure to observe the world on his own. His idea of blindness came from the
movies (Carver 315) and this preconceived notion results in his unenthusiastic attitude towards Robert

Cocoa In The Maya And Aztec Cultures
According to the archaeologists, either the ancient Maya, or the Olmec, are believed to have cultivated
the cocoa tree around 1000 B.C. for the very first time. Cocoa was considered divine in origin, and
that established its importance in the world of the Maya. In the Mayan and Aztec cultures, cocoa and
its preparation were presented greatly. The classic preparation of cocoa involved harvesting the beans,
roasting them, after the fermentation process, and crushing them into a paste. It was then mixed with
water, to which were often added corns, chili peppers, and other spices. Cocoa was transformed into a
bubbly beverage. Since sugar was not yet a known food commodity, cocoa was consumed plain.
Drunk especially on occasion by many people, cocoa was a more regular beverage of the more

Spanish added an additional element to Aztec drink, and it changed the face of cocoa forever. With
added sugar, cocoa was pleasant to Europeans, and hot, sweet cocoa became a symbol of the court in
Madrid. Spanish immediately started planting cocoa trees in their colonies. A drink of water, cocoa,
vanilla, sugar and cinnamon shortly after became very popular in France and Italy, too. Cocoa is also
used as medicament since olden days, and it s well known as a plant which protects human bodies
from free radicals influence and protects heart and blood vessels from different diseases, as well as
from cancer. Cocoa is also the good source of iron and it consists of 300 different chemical

Is War Being Morally Justifiable
All across the world, countries are drowning in the acts of warfare. Citizens residing in unescapable
conditions due to war are suffering and likely calling out to other nations for help. It is proven that
fighting violence with more violence does not draw a solution. The question of war being morally
justifiable is one most easily answered by ancient and modern philosophers: it is not. For war induces
a great deal of all those involved, promotes unnecessary violence, and overall it prevents the
expansion of the human race. Every waking moment a catastrophic war is taking place somewhere in
this world. Every waking moment a life is lost due to the wounding actions of opposing countries and
opposing people. A majority of attacks imposed consist

Big Ben As An Unbroken Reminder Of Inevitable Death
The clock was striking. The leaden circles dissolved in the air. He made her feel the beauty; made her
feel the fun, (186). An awful restriction presented throughout the novel, time is also bestowed as
completely necessary for society to function. Virginia Woolf uses Big Ben as a tool to unite the
characters whose lives seem so disconnected. To Clarissa Dalloway, the chimes serve as an unbroken
reminder of inevitable death. With each ring, she sends waves outward into the dimensions of time
and life, dramatically affecting those around her. Although disturbed by the sound of Big Ben, she has
also come to anticipate it in the same way as death. Even after she dies, Clarissa aspires to leave an

Through the parallels drawn between Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Smith, Virginia Woolf is able to
use the notion of inevitable death to address the complexity of human nature and the erraticism of the
conduct in its process. By making the stylistic choice to focus on the internal reflection of death and
rely less on external dialogue, Woolf is able to portray the confusion and sensitivity of each of the
characters. Throughout the novel, both Clarissa and Septimus meditate on the poetic lines from
Shakespeare s Cymbeline, a funeral dirge intended to find comfort in the idea of death. Fear no more
the heat o the sun/ Nor the furious winter s rages, (9). In the eyes of the novel, this quotation initially
serves to remind Clarissa of her perpetual aging and inevitable mortality. Where death would
eliminate the obstacles of such a complex world, this heat appears as something wonderful to Clarissa.
In fearing the constant propulsion forward in time, Mrs. Dalloway often reminisces of the past. She
refers to her time at the age of eighteen with Sally Seton, her female lover, as a match burning in a
crocus, (32). The notion of romance as a heat filled flower emphasizes the passion with which she
explored her budding sexuality, bringing excitement and dynamic to her life. To a certain extent, the
fervor with which

Why Did The General Sherman End The Civil War
One of the most colorful characters of the civil war was a General named William T Sherman. During
the period of the war (1861 1865),General Sherman went full circle from being forced to retire on
trumped up charges that he was insane, to becoming a key player in bringing this bloody war to a
close. On Sherman s ¨March to the Sea¨he and his men stole food and livestock and burned the houses
and barns of people who tried to fight back. The Yankees were ¨not only fighting hostile armies, but a
hostile people,¨ Sherman explained. Here are three reasons why sherman s march needed to happen.
First, someone needed a tactic to end the war. It was its third year in the civil war and people didn t
want it to go on any longer so with Sherman s ¨Total War¨ tactic it did just that and ended the war in
1865. Without it who knows how much longer the Civil war would of lasted. ... Show more content on

Shemans acts help change the way the war was fought by using his tactic which as I said before
helped end the civil war. Third, the purpose of the ¨March to the Sea¨ was to frighten Georgia´s
civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause which it did. Sherman believed that the
confederacy derived its strength not from its fighting forces but from material and moral support of
sympathetic southern whites. If he destroyed their farms, railroads, and houses he knew the confederate
war effort would collapse. It did and the North won the war because of

Ernest Hemingway Heroes
Heroes are a necessity for every story, whether it is a strong man, women or even a small child.
Heroes allow readers to further connect to a story while giving them a role model to look up to.
Hemingway was known for having men as his CODE HERO he first created this strategy in the 1920
s by making characters that readers could relate to. In A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway depicts
his main character Lieutenant Frederic Henry as this story s hero or manly man, a man of action rather
than philosophical while also being an individualist who falls madly in love with a young, American
nurse, Catherine Barkley. Us reader first embark on Henry s journey when we learn he is an

example of men being superior to women. When the baby arrives readers soon find that it was

finding out Catherine has hemorrhaged, he is forced to face the reality that his weakness and love of

George Whitefield Religion And Slavery
Many atrocious things were in motion during the 1700s in the New World. The English colonies of the
New World had an economy based on African slaves. English colonies had the biggest influx of
Africans. Not only were Africans effected by slavery, but so were many of the English settlers
themselves. Religion conflicted with the practice of slavery, which caused the colonists to in a sense
awaken and form new explicit opinions about religion. This caused previous conveyers of religion to
judge the new ways colonists were thinking about and acting out religion. This awakening in religion
was preached by many preachers. At the forefront of the movement was one such preacher known as
George Whitfield. Many other people during George ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

But further, if teaching slaves Christianity has such a bad influence upon their lives, why are you
desirous of having your children taught? Think you, they are any way better by nature than the poor
negroes? No, in no ways. Blacks are just as much, and no more, conceived and born in sin, as white
men are: both, if born and bred up here, I am persuaded are naturally capable of the same
improvement. (Whitefield, 4) In this quote Whitefield questions that if Christianity has such a bad
influence on the slaves, then why are colonists so eager to teach it to their offspring. George
Whitefield states that blacks are no more born into sin then white men. He believes that both races sin
equally.
George Whitefield played a massive role in the Great Awakening. He was an English minister that
used the local revivals of Edwards and the Tennants to create a Great Awakening within himself.
Whitefield then traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to spread his message to the English colonists.

Medi A Powerful Tool Of Communication
Essay
Media, being the most powerful tool of communication there is, influence societies in many ways. In
fact the hypodermic needle theory states that passive audiences are directly influenced by media. On
the other hand, from a Marxist perspective, one can argue the opposite that it is the audiences who
influence the information which is produced via the media. In this essay this group assessed and
contrasted the media of three countries namely Singapore, Jamaica and Bolivia in relation to their
respective economy, society, values and political system. These three countries differ gravely in terms
of their cultures, norms economic activities, religions and even social ills etc and yet despite these
differences, they all share one thing in common media coverage. In addition, each country has rules
and regulations geared towards the protection of journalists although sometimes such are not enforced
fully.
Bolivia is named after Venezuelan born liberator Simon Bolivar and boarders with five countries
namely Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. Bolivar is unique in that it has two capital La Paz
(administrative) and Sucre (constitutional). With a population of an estimated population of over 10
million people in this South American country, there are nearly 200 privately owned television
stations, more than 480 radio stations, eight (8) national newspapers as well as many local ones. Of

Across America, countless tribes and cultures have been practiced for centuries. There is so much
diversity amongst these people ranging from the north eastern Iroquois to the south western Hopi
people. Even though these people live in such different lifestyles, many of the indigenous tribes have
similar perspectives on the world, especially after western expansion during the 1800 s. Tribes, no
matter where they are geographically, all have some sort of tradition or ritual that they do which can
be for spirits, new and old, or for the people themselves. Three individual indigenous people who are
some of the more well known in modern day standards are the Hopi, Navajo, and Lakota people. All

Similar to the Navajo, the Lakota are a matriarchal society. The Lakota people practice similar
traditions to the Navajo in that direction matters. Whether is be East or West the direction is important
to their religion the same way east is important to the Navajo s belief of the rising sun. To the Lakota
people directions have a unique color associated with it and certain characteristics as well. North is
white and is portrayed as cold, South is yellow and known for its full days, East is red for its sunrise,
and West is black as that is where the sky becomes dark. However, there are two additional directions,
up and down, up is blue because of the sky, and down is green because of the earth. This is the
backbone of the Lakota people. Another tradition in which the Lakota people are unique to is the Sun
Dance. During the hottest day of the year, men, and men only, pierce their chest with a hook tied to a
rope and connect to a pole to dance. This is done as a vision quest for the individual dancing as they
do so until they collapse or the day is done. One last tradition that both Hopi and Navajo people can
relate to are sweat lodges. However, in Lakota people they are referred to as Rock Lodges or Inipi.
The reason for this is because it is for their ancestors (the rocks) who are being focused on, not the
individuals within. The rock lodge is seen as the womb of the earth. This is why

Essay on Cause of the American Civil War
The cause of the American Civil War has been a politicized subject for the past 152 years. There are
many different theories for what the main cause is, however the best answer is an all of the above
approach. The cause of the war that divided the nation cannot be narrowly defined into a single issue
but each cause is affected and tied together. The main causes that resulted in the Civil War were the
issue of nullification, tariffs, but most importantly just an overall difference in their ways of life. Yes,
slavery was a cause of the war, but that was not one of the central causes that popular belief has
engrained in us all, however, the role that slavery had will be discussed. These reasons all fed off each

Most of the enlisted men who fought and died overwhelmingly said on both sides stated that the
preservation or abolition of slavery was not the main cause of the war. James McPhearson s book, For
Causes and Comrades: Why Men fought in the Civil War, highlights these causes, and stated,
Relatively few Union volunteers mentioned the slavery issue when they enlisted . McPhearson uses
letters written home or diaries as his example and most do not touch upon the issue. The question of
slavery truly became important after the Emancipation Proclamation, in 1862 3. The North started to
string victories together, moved further down south, and they witnessed slavery firsthand. That is
when the average Union soldier began to care about the issue of slavery, well into 1863. The reason
why most men enlisted in the Union in 1861 was for one major reason, that was patriotism and
keeping the spirit of 1776 alive. The Northern view on the spirit of 1776 was the goal of preserving
the Union that was created by the Founding Fathers. As one Yankee Volunteer declared, I do feel that
the liberty of the world is placed in our hands to defend and if we are overcome then farewell to
freedom . Union soldiers believed and fought for the idea that America continued to be the last best

Proof Vs Burden Of Proof
Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and when they fail in the purpose they

The Integration Of Emotional Intelligence Into Healthcare
The Integration of Emotional Intelligence into Healthcare Throughout today s healthcare industry,
many organizations have been constantly striving to stay ahead of the competition. One area of focus
has been improvement of the organization s leaders. In order to create a strong organizational culture
and successful healthcare system, effective leadership is needed. It is thought that one major
characteristic that aids in the effectiveness of many leaders is the ability to utilize their emotional
intelligence. This paper will discuss the development and background of emotional intelligence, its
importance and function within the nursing industry, the integration into one s own practice, as well as
the role it has played in regards to personal growth.
Development and Background The theory of emotional intelligence was first introduced in 1990 by
John Mayer and Peter Salovey. They developed various ways to measure emotional intelligence
abilities, if it improved with age, and if emotional intelligence abilities formed a unified intelligence
(Mayer, 2009). Mayer and Salovey found that if all criteria were met, than it was said to be a true
intelligence. As described by Mayer (2009), emotional intelligence can be defined as one s capability
to reason about emotions and emotional information, and of emotions to enhance thought. Those with
high emotional intelligence can accurately perceive emotions in other s faces. They also know how to
use specific emotional times within

Contracts And Contracts Of Contracts
Introduction We enter into contracts every day. Taking a seat in the taxi amounts to entering into a
contract. You go to a bar to drink some beers, you have entered a contract though we might not realise
that we have entered into a contract. In the commercial world services and goods are normally
purchased for resale or consumption. Usually the buyer and the seller will negotiate the terms of the
purchase before they enter a transaction which will result in the sale. Trading involves financial risk
therefore it is in the interest of all to have recognizable set of rules by which each party agrees and
abides to. All business naturally deal with contracts, these contracts can either be unwritten or written.
A contract is a legally binding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To create a contractual relationship both parties must intend their agreement to have legal
consequences. Cases where parties of the agreement have not clearly expressed their intentions it will
be left to the courts to judge whether they intended to get into a contract. An agreement of a purely
social or domestic nature is not a contract. A good example is the Balfour v. Balfour (1919) case
whereby the husband agreed to pay £30 to his wife every month while he was abroad. As he failed to
pay the promised amount, his wife sued him for the recovery of the amount. The court held that she
could not recover it because it was social agreement and the parties did not intend to create any legal
relations. Nonetheless, even in the case of agreements of purely social or domestic nature, there may
be intention of the parties to create legal obligations. In such cases the social agreement is intended to
have legal consequences which results in a contract. In commercial and business agreements the law
will presume that the parties entering into agreement intend those agreements to have legal
consequences. A contract may be oral or in writing. If a certain type of contract is required by law to
be in writing, it must comply with the necessary formalities as to writing, registration and attestation.
If these legal formalities are not

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Youth Participation In...
The sport of tennis is often thought of as a country club sport limited only to the wealthy and elite.
Due to its financial requirements, people who are less fortunate are often denied opportunities to play.
Substantial expenses that accumulate from lessons, equipment, and membership fees deter potential
players from participating. Inner city youth are underrepresented due to lack of attainable resources
and programs. Aside from financial limitations, many junior athletes favor the characteristics of team
sports such as football, soccer, and basketball over the independence and isolation of an individual
sport like tennis. Not to mention, team sports are often far less costly. Due to these drawbacks and
perceptions, prospective junior tennis athletes are often more inclined to take the route of a different
sport. I believe that youth participation in tennis is deteriorating. As an avid tennis player and advocate
for the sport, I identify this as a major problem. Discovering practical methods that introduce and
attract younger players to tennis is crucial in expanding participation. Broadening accessibility to
tennis, demonstrating its positive values, and targeting specific ethnic and social groups are worthy
solutions in reversing the negative trend. Inner city kids are some who have the most difficulty
becoming involved in tennis. A large majority of these kids don t come from an economic background
capable of providing expenses required for participation in the sport. Talented underprivileged kids
may never have the opportunity to go to a country club and take lessons. More often than not, urban
areas lack the facilities and money to provide tennis programs for their kids. This economic deficit
becomes a major challenge for impoverished kids who want to learn tennis. As a result, inner city
youth neglect even the thought of playing tennis, and become underrepresented as a part of the junior
tennis community. By finding a way to give the inner city kids of poorer, urban areas the opportunities
to take part in tennis, we can expect to see participation of youth rise. One practical method to
encourage the involvement of inner city kids is to implement tennis programs in public schools. By
introducing

When you think of the land down under you don t really think of the kind of government they have. I
chose to write about the Australian government because I really don t hear much about Australia. It
currently has a pretty interesting story to tell when it comes to their government. I became a bit
interested in Australian politics when I saw a political animated cartoon on the internet that depicted
Kevin Rudd, the last Prime Minister, on a news television show and it was quite humorous. I am going
to give a quick history lesson on Australia then go into how the government formed and came to be.

Penal colonies are places when some send their inmates to be exiled. It was said that about 160,000

this and after a while the economy and colonies of Australia, under the British rule, started to grow
(Austrailian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade).
Now I shall talk about how the Australian Constitution. It s common knowledge to know that a
constitution is pretty much the law of the land and a foundation of the laws that rule there.
Constitutions are very important for countries to have. Helen Irving explains in The Oxford
Companion of Australian Politics that, Its Preamble records the agreement of the six Australian
colonies to federate in 1901 and to remain together as one indissoluble federal Commonwealth . The
Australian Constitution was written as a bill when the colonies met in 1890. The constitution has a full
draft by the end of 1891 but colonial parliaments failed to pass it (Irving).
It took about 10 years in 1901 that the constitution was finally ratified. They were finally an

  • 2. Leading Change Book Review Leading Change by John Kotter 1996 Review by Chris Shea John P. Kotter is internationally known and widely regarded as the foremost speaker on the topics of leadership and change. He is the premier voice on how the best organizations actually achieve successful transformations. The Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership, Emeritus at the Harvard Business School and a graduate of MIT and Harvard, Kotter s vast experience and knowledge on successful change and leadership have been proven time and time again. The book Leading Change looks at an eight stage process for implementing successful transformations in today s firms as well as the eight errors that are common to change efforts. The ideas and methods in this book ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To avoid these hazards and capitalize on the opportunities the companies of today need to become stronger competitors. To become the 21st century organization that will succeed some of the transformations needed include reengineering, restructuring, quality programs, mergers and acquisitions and strategic and cultural change. Useful change is often associated with a multi step process that creates power and motivation significant enough to overwhelm all the sources of inertia and driven by high quality leadership and not just management. Kotter states that the eight steps required to produce successful change are; (1) Establishing a sense of urgency; (2)Creating the guiding coalition; (3) Developing a vision and strategy; (4) Communicating the change vision; (5) Empowering broad based action; (6) Generating short term wins; (7) Consolidating gains and producing more change; (8) Anchoring new approaches in the culture. Kotter goes on to suggest the first four steps in the process serve to defrost a hardened status quo, steps five to seven introduce new practices and the last phase grounds the change in the corporate culture. It s important to go through all of the steps in sequence however normally one operates in multiple phases at once. To skip a step or get to far ahead without the establishment of a solid base will almost always lead to problems. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Interpretation Of Miss Havisham, By Carol Ann Duffy The author intends to illustrate that Curley s wife s life was lonely in the sense that women during the Great Depression. In the context of time, because of a high rate of unemployment, women were treated as clerks, who had much a lower social status than men. Steinbeck wants to portray the causes and effects of isolation on Curley s wife as a representative of the women living at that time, through his personal experience in working in ranches during the Great Depression. Similarly, the persona in Havisham is presented by Carol Ann Duffy as an isolated and bitter woman who suffers internally. Duffy highlights the anger and jealousy which contribute to her torments due to gender. Duffy adopts an exasperated and resentful tone to portray Miss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Duffy reinforces the ways in which Miss Havisham has suffered over the years using the metaphor of dark green pebbles which echoes the sense of jealousy. It suggests the way Miss Havisham is feeling, her compassion for others has hardened like pebbles. Duffy also uses imagery to present the passing of time. She presents the veins in Miss Havisham s hands as ropes. This underlines that Miss Havisham has become an old lady. The rope suggests knots and the twisted feelings she has, the contradiction in her mind and the love and hate relationship Miss Havisham has towards the man who dumped her. It can also be inferred as how Miss Havisham has hardened over the years. The poet s focus on her pain is also explored in the use of personification, where she describes Miss Havisham cawing nooooo , making her seem like an animal begging for mercy, this is suggesting her unwillingness to accept the fact that she is never going to see the man again. The isolated feeling in the poem is skilfully illustrated by Duffy describing Miss Havisham s grief and pain. Duffy s portrayal of the love and hate relationship Miss Havisham has towards the man is suggested by the oxymoron of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Review Of The Lord Of The Black Sands Spoiler (Click to Hide) Eckhart felt sick, as he usually did when entering the castle. As loyal as he was to the Lord of the Black Sands, something dark crawled and writhed about inside him whenever he was in the man s presence. Not that Eckhart was a perfect or even moral man under any definitions, but Gammon, the Demon Lord, took being evil to extremes that made even the most heartless and bloodthirsty men cringe. Inside, the castle s floor and walls were a dense black material that seemed to absorb the lighting from the braziers positioned every few feet in the hallways and took every inch of heat from within the walls as well. Stifling a shiver, his metal bound boots made heavy clinking sounds on the polished obsidian as he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Madness filled that grin as he stared at the general fiendishly, his youthful features, well groomed with golden eyeshadow and dark eyeliner making him look almost feminine, if not for the heavy brow ridge and large nose that dominated his face. The velvet cloak he wore draped over him, all the way to the ground, shoulders topped with spikes and large feathers, and elegant, manly hands emerging from the sleeves with long, pointed nails on each finger. His exposed stomach and chest were slender yet muscled, a thin trail of dark hair dusting above his groin, disappearing beneath his trousers, and a golden ring put through his right nipple glistened in the available light. The entire package was alluring, tempting and sensual and yet at the same time made him feel sick with fear and shame. Without missing a beat during his quiet inspection, he answered, his deep voice, normally making other men seem girlish in comparison now seemed unnatural and bizarre when compared to the Demon s multiple voices. • 5. Agile Development Methods And Cmmi ( Capability Maturity... Abstract Agile development methods and CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) best practices are often perceived to be at odds with each other. This paper provides arguments to point out that CMMI and Agile can work toward deriving benefit from using both and exploit similarities that have the potential to improve business performance. 1. Reasons for Discord There are two primary reasons for the discord between the two process a) Early adopters of both these methods have used them for purposes which are extremely different. Early CMMI adopters were developing large scale , less risky, critical systems , often with high level of management , Where as early adopters of AGILE methods generally focused on smaller , single team lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such transparent behavior is within all the projects and leads to clear expectations A plausible explanation for many of the challenges faced by organizations using CMMI is likely the fact that most processes implemented using CMMI fail to distinguish that CMMI is fundamentally a model. Instead of viewing CMMI as a model they look at it as a standard. A standard is an auditable, testable, compliable work with a limited amount of set demonstrable outcomes with little variation between iterations. This misuse of CMMI as a standard is a complete misuse of the model as CMMI does not contain any set processes or procedures . They are not activities that necessarily need to occur within a specific process. They are process oriented activities that when used collectively can reach the process area and business goals to improve the real life activities of an System CMMI s ultimate goal (i.e., continuous process improvement) is to cause an organization to become less wasteful, leaner, and more in touch with actual development progress. Ultimately, both Agile and CMMI, especially in high trust environments, expect organizations to see gains in productivity by eliminating unnecessary effort. 3. Understanding AGILE In general, attributes of successful Agile implementations include the following aspects small teams ,customer feedback, continuous planning ,co located and cross functional teams Agile is not successful when the ... The Constitution works because of checks and balances, the three branches of government, and federalism. I also think that the article V of the constitution that starts to state the amendment process also contributes to the constitution s success because it makes making a new amendment very difficult. The three branches of government include the Executive Branch, the Legislative branch, and the Judicial branch. The Executive Branch includes the President and Vice President to the cabinet members make up this branch. This branch is responsible for enforcing laws they get there power from the president. The president is the head of state and also the commander in chief of the armed forces. The cabinet of the executive branch body is made up of 15 leaders from each agency. • 7. Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides (Analysis) Marek Sulich Mr. O Connor American Literature 1 March 2011 Ghost Soldiers The novel, Ghost Soldiers, written by Hampton Sides, is a great work of literature, depicting the true horrors of war, friendship, and the one thing that was never lost, hope. The non fictional book takes place in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation of the islands from 1942 and goes through three gruesome years to end in the year of 1945. The book begins with the idea of surrendering Bataan, an American occupied area of the Philippines, because of the severe amount of wounded and very little defense to last out or defeat the incoming Imperial Army. General Edward King formally surrendered Bataan and this marked the start of what would be later called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beating had long been an acceptable and routine method of discipline within the Japanese Army. Soldiers could strike subordinates with no questions asked and no explanation warranted. The slightest distinction between ranks was of critical importance because it meant the difference between who could inflict blows, and who could expect to receive them. This sort of institutionalized brutality had a tendency to work its way down the ranks to the lowliest private. One can imagine what would happen when an enlisted man, hardened by this psychology of top down violence, found himself suddenly thrown into a foreign and not altogether distasteful situation in which he was the superior, in charge of a group of helpless prisoners. For some, the temptation to beat proved irresistible. For others, beating was only the beginning. (Hampton 91 92) The Japanese soldiers had no sense of remorse or sorrow for the prisoners instead they pushed them to their breaking point. Many prisoners collapsed which proved fatal because if you fell behind you became a practice dummy for the Japanese to sharpen their bayonet skills and techniques of killing on you. On one occasion, a prisoner was falling behind in the rear so tanks that followed lined themselves up to run over the victim and squish him into the pavement to make it look as if he were from a cartoon. • 8. Opioid Pathogenesis Emerging evidence indicates that free radicals are involved in the pathogenesis of several digestive system disorders as well as in the regulation of biological processes such as aging. Previous reports have indicated that opioids induce apoptosis via stimulating an oxidative stress pathway that is associated with the production of superoxide and nitric oxide (NO) [11]. NO, together with reactive oxygen species (ROS), has a pivotal role in the regulation of apoptosis and necrosis in various cells. Hsiao et al. investigated the role of NO and ROS in the morphine induced apoptosis. They found that the morphine treatment enhanced apoptosis through both NO and ROS pathways [12]. The inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) enzyme is one of the most important enzymes involved in the generation of NO from the amino acid L arginine. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the induction of mu opioid receptor (MOR1) activity can effectively increase NADH/NADPH mediated ROS synthesis via activating the phospholipase D2 (PLD2) [14]. Then, NADH/NADPH oxidase is a key downstream enzyme responsible for generating opioid induced ROS. The role of morphine in the regulating function of NADPH oxidase has been previously demonstrated [15]. It has been shown that the morphine up regulates the expression of heme oxygenase (HO 1) which leads to an induced occurrence of macrophage apoptosis and reduced macrophage migration [16]. Both ROS and MAPK signaling pathways are required for the full induction of HO 1 activity [17]. Accordingly, the opioids may increase the expression of HO 1 through a ROS and MAPK dependent manner. The function of some other oxidative stress related enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is decreased by opioids [18]. However, Dave et ... One of the movies that shows the integration of Italians into American culture comes from the 20th century and was well acclaimed for its acting and cinematography. The 1955 film Marty accurately portrays Italian American lifestyles and stigmas, specifically males, in that time period and demonstrates how the Italian people assimilated into American culture. Getting married was one of the most important things that an Italian man can do. At 35 years old, Marty has yet to marry or have children, and is living with his mother in his childhood home. In this time period, it was critical to marry someone who was also Italian. This custom was practiced more before the time period of Marty but it was still an important factor to consider when picking a bride. The viewer sees how important this is to Marty s mother, as she asks questions of Clara before church. Mrs. Pilletti: She s more than twenty nine years old, Marty. • 11. The Importance Of A Thorough Home Inspection A thorough home inspection is one of the most important steps before purchasing a home, and many buyers try to skip this step only to end up regretting it later when problems become apparent. Your home is the place you go to get away from the world, and to relax and put your feet up, or spend time with your family and friends. You want to be reassured that the home you buy is safe and in good condition. A home inspection can give you this peace of mind, using a visual inspection of every aspect of the home both inside and out. This should be done by a professional home inspector who has the education, knowledge, and experience needed to identify problems which may not be readily apparent. There are some questions you should ask any prospective home inspection company, and things to consider, to guarantee you get a thorough and complete inspection. How long has the inspector been doing these inspections? How many home inspections does the inspector do in a year? How much experience does the home inspector have inspecting homes identical to the one you are buying? These questions are important, because without adequate experience the inspector may miss signs of a hidden problem. Choose a home inspection company that exclusively does only home inspections, and does not just practice this as a sideline to their day job. Ask about the reports that will be given, will you get a written report, an oral report, or both? Does the home inspection company have certification? Do they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some good things about oligopoly are by developing product innovations and taking advantage of economies of scale. With oligopoly it is more likely to expand production capabilities, promote economic growth, and they develop change that advances the level of technology ( Oligopoly, 2000). Some bad things about oligopoly is that they tend to be inefficient in the allocation of resources and promotes the concentration of income and wealth ( Oligopoly, 2000). Natural monopoly exists when economies of scale encourage production by a single producer (Mayer). An example of this is your local electrical utility. • 19. Raymond Carver Cathedral Analysis Blind to the Blind To be imaginative is to be a child. As a person ages, he is expected to mature into adulthood and to live in the real world. He is expected to abandon his childhood dreams and cultivate practicality and factuality. However, imaginations are not limited to unicorns and dragons; it is a skill a person must nurture to realize his dreams and desires. To be imaginative is to be a visionary. Without a vision, a person lacks the sight for compassion, curiosity, and self consciousness. In this sense, imagination is not only to think outside the box, but also to search deeper inside. In the short story, Cathedral by Raymond Carver, Carver develops the idea that a lack of imagination limits a person to the physical and visible world which leads to the blindness to the abstract world and rejection of the uncertain future. It is when a person opens his eyes to the unseen that he can create emotional connection with others and discover the profound truth inside himself. The narrator s lack of imagination leads him to reject what is beyond his visual perception. The narrator looks at his surroundings plainly as they are and therefore fails to see the deeper meanings behind it. Throughout the story, the narrator is watching television, which symbolizes his narrow perspective and his failure to observe the world on his own. His idea of blindness came from the movies (Carver 315) and this preconceived notion results in his unenthusiastic attitude towards Robert before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yes, slavery was a cause of the war, but that was not one of the central causes that popular belief has engrained in us all, however, the role that slavery had will be discussed. Most of the enlisted men who fought and died overwhelmingly said on both sides stated that the preservation or abolition of slavery was not the main cause of the war. James McPhearson s book, For Causes and Comrades: Why Men fought in the Civil War, highlights these causes, and stated, Relatively few Union volunteers mentioned the slavery issue when they enlisted . McPhearson uses letters written home or diaries as his example and most do not touch upon the issue. The question of slavery truly became important after the Emancipation Proclamation, in 1862 3. The North started to string victories together, moved further down south, and they witnessed slavery firsthand. That is when the average Union soldier began to care about the issue of slavery, well into 1863. The reason why most men enlisted in the Union in 1861 was for one major reason, that was patriotism and keeping the spirit of 1776 alive. The Northern view on the spirit of 1776 was the goal of preserving the Union that was created by the Founding Fathers. As one Yankee Volunteer declared, I do feel that the liberty of the world is placed in our hands to defend and if we are overcome then farewell to freedom . Union soldiers believed and fought for the idea that America continued to be the last best hope for freedom. The soldiers believed that a defeat would weaken America s perception by Europeans ... • 34. Contracts And Contracts Of Contracts Introduction We enter into contracts every day. Taking a seat in the taxi amounts to entering into a contract. You go to a bar to drink some beers, you have entered a contract though we might not realise that we have entered into a contract. In the commercial world services and goods are normally purchased for resale or consumption. Usually the buyer and the seller will negotiate the terms of the purchase before they enter a transaction which will result in the sale. Trading involves financial risk therefore it is in the interest of all to have recognizable set of rules by which each party agrees and abides to. All business naturally deal with contracts, these contracts can either be unwritten or written. A contract is a legally binding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To create a contractual relationship both parties must intend their agreement to have legal consequences. Cases where parties of the agreement have not clearly expressed their intentions it will be left to the courts to judge whether they intended to get into a contract. An agreement of a purely social or domestic nature is not a contract. A good example is the Balfour v. Balfour (1919) case whereby the husband agreed to pay £30 to his wife every month while he was abroad. As he failed to pay the promised amount, his wife sued him for the recovery of the amount. The court held that she could not recover it because it was social agreement and the parties did not intend to create any legal relations. Nonetheless, even in the case of agreements of purely social or domestic nature, there may be intention of the parties to create legal obligations. In such cases the social agreement is intended to have legal consequences which results in a contract. In commercial and business agreements the law will presume that the parties entering into agreement intend those agreements to have legal consequences. A contract may be oral or in writing. If a certain type of contract is required by law to be in writing, it must comply with the necessary formalities as to writing, registration and attestation. If these legal formalities are not ... • 35. The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Youth Participation In... The sport of tennis is often thought of as a country club sport limited only to the wealthy and elite. Due to its financial requirements, people who are less fortunate are often denied opportunities to play. Substantial expenses that accumulate from lessons, equipment, and membership fees deter potential players from participating. Inner city youth are underrepresented due to lack of attainable resources and programs. Aside from financial limitations, many junior athletes favor the characteristics of team sports such as football, soccer, and basketball over the independence and isolation of an individual sport like tennis. Not to mention, team sports are often far less costly. Due to these drawbacks and perceptions, prospective junior tennis athletes are often more inclined to take the route of a different sport. I believe that youth participation in tennis is deteriorating. As an avid tennis player and advocate for the sport, I identify this as a major problem. Discovering practical methods that introduce and attract younger players to tennis is crucial in expanding participation. Broadening accessibility to tennis, demonstrating its positive values, and targeting specific ethnic and social groups are worthy solutions in reversing the negative trend. Inner city kids are some who have the most difficulty becoming involved in tennis. A large majority of these kids don t come from an economic background capable of providing expenses required for participation in the sport. Talented underprivileged kids may never have the opportunity to go to a country club and take lessons. More often than not, urban areas lack the facilities and money to provide tennis programs for their kids. This economic deficit becomes a major challenge for impoverished kids who want to learn tennis. As a result, inner city youth neglect even the thought of playing tennis, and become underrepresented as a part of the junior tennis community. By finding a way to give the inner city kids of poorer, urban areas the opportunities to take part in tennis, we can expect to see participation of youth rise. One practical method to encourage the involvement of inner city kids is to implement tennis programs in public schools. By introducing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I chose to write about the Australian government because I really don t hear much about Australia. It currently has a pretty interesting story to tell when it comes to their government. I became a bit interested in Australian politics when I saw a political animated cartoon on the internet that depicted Kevin Rudd, the last Prime Minister, on a news television show and it was quite humorous. I am going to give a quick history lesson on Australia then go into how the government formed and came to be. Now I shall talk about how the Australian Constitution. It s common knowledge to know that a constitution is pretty much the law of the land and a foundation of the laws that rule there. Constitutions are very important for countries to have. Helen Irving explains in The Oxford Companion of Australian Politics that, Its Preamble records the agreement of the six Australian colonies to federate in 1901 and to remain together as one indissoluble federal Commonwealth . The Australian Constitution was written as a bill when the colonies met in 1890. The constitution has a full draft by the end of 1891 but colonial parliaments failed to pass it (Irving). It took about 10 years in 1901 that the constitution was finally ratified. They were finally an independent nation and no longer under the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
