identified as the JTF H Commander, LTG Keen had to start piecing together a capable Joint Task

Forces as well as a BCT from the 82nd Airborne Division were identified almost immediately as

Moore continues his effort as the story unravels in a later scene where The Joker captures
Gordon and shows him photographs of Barbara, who is gravely wounded and stripped naked.
Moore vividly illustrates Gordon s anger and shock, causing the readers to sympathize with his
feeling of despair and perceive that The Joker s plan to force Gordon into a psychotic break
(Wooldridge) may be succeeding. In this scene, The Joker has Gordon trapped on his Ghost
Train ride, Gordon s face in shock as it dawns on him that the person in the horrific images is his
own daughter. Moore presents Gordon s face in an extreme close up, which is a framing in
which the scale of the object shown is very large (Yale Film Studies). The only other thing that
can be seen is half the face of The Joker s minion, who attempts to keep Gordon down; everything
else is red, except for their eyes and teeth. Moore uses this particular framing method so that the
audience can see Gordon s aged, appalled, and unkempt face, emphasizing his distress and his
loss of control. The red on the faces of the characters in this panel highlights the emotions that
Gordon feels: hopelessness, shock, and dismay. The yellow eyes and teeth underscore the
horrified look on Gordon s face. The Joker has forced Gordon to realize that his family has been
irreparably harmed, and that he is unable to do anything about it. Moore

sister, Maria Teresa. She is detailed to be a very thoughtful character who always seem to look
out for others, especially those important to her in life. Alvarez induces this empowering
development of Maria Teresa through the usage of diction, point of view and selection of detail.
As the novel began, Maria Teresa was merely a child and she was seen as a very sweet character.
However, the revolution turned things around for her whole family. She longer perceived certain

Therefore meaning that the reader is able to connect with the character on a much deeper level
and be able have empathetic experiences. When Maria Teresa expresses that she had never
known such terror...chest was so tight...could barely breathe (Page 254) the reader is saddened
to know the traumatic physical pain the character had to go through, and that s not even taking
into account the dreadful emotional distress. Maria Teresa can be admittedly be described as a
weak person because she could not handle the horrible conditions the guards were putting her
through. On top of that, she mentions that the pain felt like her spirit [was] snapping loose,
soaring above [her] body and looking down at the scene (Page 255). The fact that she bring up
the actions of things snapping loose and the act of looking down emphasizes how broken Maria
Teresa feels. The snapping could be a reference to her sanity and peace breaking away little by
little. And the act of looking down is usually a sign of shame, it could be a sign that Maria Teresa
looks down upon herself and dislikes what she has become, an extremely fragile human
