How Does Homer Use Figurative Language In The Odyssey
Within the Odyssey, Homer uses literary devices such as figurative language to express the theme of
the Odyssey. Figurative language helps with the development of theme because they are more likely to
engage their readers and make their argument more relevant and convincing. Homer uses figurative
language in the Odyssey to describe the themes of sacrifices and the love of home.
In the Odyssey, Homer uses figurative language to describe the theme of the love of home. In The
Lotus Eaters, it says, All hands aboard; come, clear the bench and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose
hope of home, (103 105). The author uses this piece as an allusion to express to the reader that
Odysseus knows it is super important for his whole crew to stick together

Case Study of C C
1. In general, how did C C s first organizational structure contribute to the store managers
dissatisfaction?
C C Grocery s initial organizational structure operated under a vertical linkage. Vertical linkage is
utilized to coordinate activities between the top and bottom of an organization and are designed
primarily for control of the organization (Daft,2013) Store managers were responsible for the grocery
line, front end department and general store operations but had little knowledge about merchandising,
meat and produce. Instead, their duties included cleanliness of store, employee appearance, and
sufficient checkout service and price accuracy. Store managers wanted to be trained in management
skills to allow them opportunity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The store manager asked the produce and meat managers to display some of the cola but was denied
any help by the produce manager as he claimed this did not help his sales and he did not care about the
campaign.(Daft,2013) Decisions and strategies were being made without any regard to include the
store as a team. Another factor that contributed to poor cooperation was failing to provide these
managers with opportunities to learn skills for promotions, which lead to resentment and poor morale.
Departments were unable to effectively work together and build strategies as team but instead were
working towards their own agenda. The serve the customer mentality created by Doug Cummins no
longer existed in the stores.
4. How would the proposed reorganization address the problems addressed in each question above?
Under the new proposed restructuring, the meat, grocery and produce departments would all be under
the store manager. This helps improve the frustration the store managers had with the lack of authority
with the meat and produce department managers. Store managers can work more closely with the
department managers to learn what their department goals and issues are to work on combined
strategies that benefit their store. By continuing to work as team towards common goals, more trust
will be formed and the store will operate more efficiently. This allows the district supervisor to now
focus on training and development, as the consultants proposed the

Nationalism And Sectionalism
History essay What would have happen if america never went through any problems? Now you may
be thinking america has always been great. Well that s not the case. We wouldn t have become a more
stronger independent country if we never had to solve problems. During the time of the early 1800s
many different events were happening to contribute to America s situation of nationalism and
sectionalism. One example of nationalism is the war of 1812. This war showed nationalism because
they went against great britain the greatest naval power in the world, at the time, and won. So it gained
a lot of national pride.it also ended the impressment of american sailors. One example of sectionalism
is shown in document one and it is basically saying america

Influence Processes: A Leadership Analysis
Leadership Ethics for Managers
June 1, 2008 Abstract
A leader s ability to influence and motivate followers is a crucial skill that effective leaders must
possess. This is why organizations allow leaders to control many of the operational functions of the
organization. By controlling several key operational components, the leader is able to direct and
institute change throughout the organization. The purpose of this paper is to analyze leader influence
models and present the practical implications of their use. Influence Processes: A Leadership Analysis

By having control over the organizations reward system, the leader can mold the organization into one
that conforms and promotes their organizational vision. Used correctly, this form of leadership
influence can effectively change an organization over time by rewarding those who buy into and
promote the leaders style of leadership.
Promoting and Selecting Leaders: In addition to the above influence factors, leaders also are
empowered to select and promote the leadership within the organization (Nahavandi, 2006). This
provides them with a powerful tool to influence and effectively create an organizational following of
their values and vision. By selecting leaders who mirror their values and leadership style, the leader is
able to create a loyal and like minded leadership staff. While this may be an effective influence tool,
the leader risks alienating key personnel and breeding doubts about their ability to lead if they utilize
this form of influence in an unethical manner.
Modeling Behaviors:
Finally, leaders can also use their influence to model the behavior of their subordinates (Nahavandi,
2006). They achieve this by providing guidance and advise to their followers and by inviting others to
participate in organizational team building activities. When leaders actively promote and encourage
their followers to follow their examples they are effectively molding the future behaviors of their

The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Essay
The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe s The Pit and the pendulum
demonstrate an arabesque look at the human mind. Part of the terror of The Pit and the Pendulum
stems from the apocalyptic imagery with which Poe establishes his narrative framework. The narrator
of the tale seems not to parallel the characters of Poe s other tales, in that he is very sane and his
torture comes from without rather than from within. Poe has used apocalyptic imagery in many of his
works (Spealght 235). Condemned to torture and death by the black robed, white lipped judges of the
Inquisition in the opening scene of the tale, the narrator observes seven candles, which first dissolve in
his mind into seven angels wearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fittingly, then, Poe concludes his tale with blaring trumpets, fiery walls, and a thousand thunders ,
apocalyptic images that describe the narrator s deliverance by General LaSalle as a sort of Second
Coming of Christ. Indeed, removed from its allusive context, the narrator s rescue is difficult to
account for since, as David H. Hirsch has pointed out, it is neither foreshadowed in the tale nor
congruent with its overwhelming Beard The Pit and the Pendulum 3 oppression. However, in light of
Revelation 16.15 Behold, I come as a thief the narrator as well as the reader accepts the
unexpectedness of LaSalle s and the narrator s escape. Commentators have of course, recognized Poe
s allusions to Revelation and several apocryphal books of the Bible. Hirsch observes that the final
paragraphs of the tale neatly counterpoint the first by reversing the narrator s loss of hearing, and then
collapse with auditory amplification and expansion. According to Hirsch, the dreamy indeterminate
hum of the opening lines is caught up in the discordant hum of the conclusion; the burr of a mill wheel
is amplified into the thousand thunders, and the collapsing image of the blackness of darkness
supervened is inverted into the expanding image of the fiery walls rushing outward . Hirsch suggests,
moreover, that the outstretched arm of

responses were correlated and the mean obtained for each. The standard deviation was also calculated
for each response. The results show that there was a significant swing towards the positive responses
with the mean of 14.71 and a standard deviation of 2.87. The negative responses correlated a mean
score of 3.24 with a standard deviation of 2.77. This demonstrates that just over 70% of those who
participated in the Warm control group returned positive responses with both standard deviations
within an acceptable level of around 2.8. This is clear evidence that the inclusion of the central trait
independent variable of Warm did significantly influence the dependant variable outcome in favour of

What Should Be Done Without Regard
Things without all remedy should be done without regard; what s done is done This quote nicely
captures our cultural unquestioned belief about regret that states that lamenting what has already
occurred is foolish and that it is better to simply move on and forward. The initial thought when
hearing this quote is that it is an admirable philosophy that people should follow, however, that is until
I tell you who said it and in what context. This quote was spoken by Lady Macbeth convincing her
husband to stop feeling sorry about murdering people. Maybe not a role model after all. I believe that
instead of forgetting, it is important for people to remember the regret they felt in these instances, so
they can make better decisions in the future.
An experience deeply embedded in my memory was my very traumatic first time at an amusement
park. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I can undo, unfriend, delete, unfollow, erase, but what I cannot fix is what has already happened. And
I think the idea of no control over the outcome scares me, but I have to face the hard reality of it which
is that there is no delete button in real life. That was the basis of my regret. The thought of not having
control over what would happen to me on that rollercoaster ride horrified me. Yet I was angry with
myself for not going on it. After this experience I pushed it out of my mind, completely believing in
what society has drilled into my head, which is that people should forget the past and focus only on
the future. However I have come to learn that ignoring that regret is worse. I think it is important to
acknowledge it s existence. Actually, not being able to feel regret is a characteristic of those with brain
damage. To refuse to feel remorse is almost like self diagnosing yourself as mentally insane. Therefore
in order to live a fully functional and humane life full of emotion, I believe that people need to learn to
live with regret, not without

Dr. Strangelove And The Cold War
The Cold War was a period of several decades of tension and the threat of nuclear conflict between the
two remaining superpowers that emerged from WWII, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The 1964 film
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, directed by Stanley
Kubrick, depicts the overlying themes of the Cold War in a comedic fashion. This film s full
embodiment of the Cold War is seen through its representation of the time period, and the sheer
competitiveness between the United States and Russia. Additionally, due to many of Kubrick s movie
decisions, the film has helped society acknowledge and understand the pure absurdity that the topic of
nuclear destruction holds. In Dr. Strangelove, General Jack D. ... Show more content on

General alone goes rogue and sends the missiles toward Russia.
The film delves into some of the difficult options leaders have to choose from in cases involving
nuclear weapons. Nuclear conflicts are very complex, with many scenarios that could potentially
occur. After General Ripper has directed his plane to bomb the enemy, he describes his thought
process to one of his officers, ...when [the president s advisors] realize there is no possibility in
recalling the wing there will be only one course of action: open, total commitment . Later, General
Buck Turgidson, one of the President s top advisors, echoes this exact idea in the war room and
proposes to the U.S. President a full commitment. This was one possible solution that could have
neutralized all of Russia in one wave of nuclear missiles; however, this strategy is frowned upon and
dismissed by the President as it would reflect poorly on the U.S. diplomatic reputation in the long run.
An aspect of the Cold War that Kubrick focuses on is the blatant lack of trust between the conflicting
nations. In a scene where a Russian ambassador is being brought into the war room, General
Turgidson is disturbed by having all of the U.S. plans open in front of the enemy. He exclaims to the
U.S. President, Sir, you can t let him in here. He ll see everything. He ll see the big board! Suddenly,
the camera turns back and

Annotated Bibliography The Dream Of The Rood
Annotated Bibliography
Brock, Jeanette C. The Dream of the Rood and the Image of Christ in the Early Middle Ages. Web. 18
July 2015. Jeanette Brock s article, The Dream of the Rood and the Image of Christ in the Early
Middle Ages, suggests that the author of Dream of the Rood had a missionary purpose to expose
Christ as a warrior suiting for armor. This indication counter opposes the meek, human nature of Jesus
as it is exemplified in the Bible. Furthermore, she compares this poem to other medieval poetry such
as Beowulf . She explains the rood becoming a warrior and defeating death simply gives a message of
hope. Brock s emphasis remains with the concept that during the Middle Ages, the perception of dying
as a warrior was seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, in her research, Emma B. Hawkins gathered information that supported the notion that
many Anglo Saxon writers associated power with terms such as bravery, victory, physical strength and
so much more (Hawkins 1995). All of these characteristics, are displayed both Christ and the Cross in
The Dream of the Rood as masculine undertones. The cross represents a power struggle between
Christ s defeat (which has feminine connotations) and his victory which has masculine connotations

The Tortilla Curtain Summary
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book Tortilla Curtain. The main ideas of the book are especially
significant in the political climate today. The books titles expresses the main idea of the book. The
Tortilla Curtain refers to the physical boundary between Mexico and the California boarder. It also
represents the deeper ideological and sociological chasm separating the Mexican immigrants and

town called Arroyo Blanco Estates in Los Aneles. He lives with his wife and kids and lives a normal

Oh no! That will not be necessary, Your oh, I mean, uh, Iudraicor.

Let us get started. Our target is eighteen fly metes at the left wing. He spoke to the crowd of flies now.

The Concept of Perfectionism Essay
The Concept of Perfectionism
Do you push yourself to be the best? Do you get mad at yourself for not doing the best? Do you delay
assignments till the last possible limit because of fear of rejection? Do you feel horrible when work isn
t done to your best ability of when minor failures seem like catastrophic ones? These are all signs of
what is known as perfectionism (Pacht 1984). If you seem to agree with most of these things then you
might be a perfectionist. According to Webster s dictionary, it states that perfectionism is a disposition
which regards anything less than perfect, unacceptable. Many people in the world suffer from
perfectionism. So is that case of Mike Bellah. His perfectionism lead him to a lifestyle where he lost ...

Second the fear of making mistakes: one may not answer a question in class for fear of mistakes, or
delay projects because of fear that it may be wrong in the end. Third is fear of disapproval: if one lets
others see their flaws, they fear they will no longer be accepted, and try to protect themselves from
criticism, rejection and disapproval. Four is the all or none thinking: perfectionists think that they are
worthless if their projects aren t done perfectly. If one gets B, instead of an A, they might think that
they are a total failure. Fifth is the overemphasis on shoulds : They live in a life of standards and rules
to lead their life. With an overemphasis on what they need to do, they forget what they want. Last is
the belief that others are easily successful: perfectionists see others accomplishing things and think
that they do it with minimum effort and little stress. They keep viewing their efforts and unending and
insubstantial.
3
These causes of perfectionism make those with the disorder to shut out the world, along with many
other results (S.P.C.C. 2000). The effects of perfectionism can be small or they can lead to other
problems. The cycle of perfectionism as stated by the SUNY Potsdam Counseling Center can lead
people to an unhealthy life. First, perfectionists set unrealistic goals. Second, they fail to meet these
goals because

Forms of Industrial Organization

According to McConnell and Brue Economists group industries into four distinct market structures:
pure competition, pure monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. These four market models
differ in several respects: the number of firms in the industry, whether those firms produce a
standardized product or try to differentiate their products from those of other firms, and how easy or
how difficult it is for firms to enter the industry (McConnell Brue, 2005, chap. 21). As part of the

The Ford Motor Company And General Motors
The largest contributor to Canada s Gross Domestic Product is Canada s largest manufacturing
employer (Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association, 2011), but how has this sector surpassed all
other industries? and how has this sector survived all the economic destructions riddled throughout
Canada s history? This is the Canadian automotive industry and it is enormous and powerful yet so
threatened by politics. Two of the largest players in the automotive industry are the Ford Motor
Company and General Motors. By comparing the two paths both parallel companies have taken
throughout over one hundred years of operations (Dykes, 2015), we can expose proper and improper
business strategies within Canada. We can adventure through the strengths built up by management,
the weaknesses that have attacked through the inside, the potential opportunities forecasted to arise,
and the threats that may enforce themselves towards these industrial giants. From this we may be able
to gather just what it takes to survive the Canadian market. The Ford Motor company was founded in
Windsor Ontario in 1904 and initiated the commercialization of the automotive industry in Canada
(Dykes, 2015). Four years later in 1908 General Motors was founded by Colonel R.S. Mclaughlin.

Role Of Atheism In Australia
Synopsis:
The atheism is accounted for its historic existence of fundamentalist religion in Australia. Australians
perceived to be peculiar in responding to religion which neither gives comfort to believer nor to
atheist, as both are appalled by anything but full commitment. Peter Jensen, future Anglican
Archbishop of Sydney, and Bruce Wilson claimed at the same time that Australia was a pagan nation
and not a religious by its actions or attitudes. Australians objection to Christianity is that it failed to
make people morally any better than those with unbelief. While Peter Jensen emphasized that morality
is not Christianity. Tom Frame explained that the abandonment of religion is inevitable as the growing

considered him as apostle of atheism. He was motivated to write opinion pieces in favor of atheism
because humanity s denial of death was the source of its ingenious ability to muffle morality with

II. Introduction: (This is where you start talking)
A. Attention Grabber: In the second grade, after a really, really close family friend had passed away I

leading cause of suicide. In a national survey of high school students, nearly 20% of teens thought
about attempting suicide, and more than 8% made a suicide attempt. Over half of all kids who suffer
from depression will eventually attempt suicide at least once, and over 7% will die as a result.
C. Credibility Statement: so why am I telling you this? And why should you listen to me? Well
because I have lived with the symptoms of depression for 9 years now, I know what it feels like, and I

within the next few hours or days (Knight Espinosa, 2010). Informed consent must be obtained either
by the patient, or if the patient is unable to do so, a legal surrogate before palliative sedation is
initiated (Knight Espinosa, 2010). Knight and Espinosa recommended receiving a second opinion as
to whether the patient is an appropriate candidate for palliative sedation. Terminal weaning is when
mechanical ventilation is discontinued for a patient expected to die without its support (Knight
Espinosa, 2010). One of the most common methods of discontinuation is through slowly reducing the
fraction of inspired oxygen (Knight Espinosa, 2010). Terminal extubation is the removal of the
endotracheal tube, and this can be done during or after a terminal weaning process (Knight Espinosa,
2010, p. 527). Removal of life supporting interventions is the cause of most deaths in critical care
units (Knight Espinosa, 2010). Knight and Espinosa (2010) discussed palliative sedation and terminal
weaning in the same chapter because the two topics go together. Ethical Considerations Nursing
Several important ethical considerations exist surrounding the ideas and practices of palliative

`` Richard Trenton Chase ``
Richard Trenton Chase, unlike regular children had a very abusive childhood. Raised by a very
controlling father who did not get along with his mentally ill wife and always misdirected his anger
toward Richard and his sister with physical abuse (Dennison, Victoria, 2009). As a child at age 10
Richard became extremely fascinated with fire and mutilating cats. Later throughout his teenage years
he began heavily drinking and smoking. This soon led up to his hectic early adulthood when he was
then diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic who suffered from somatic delusions. (Ramsland,
Katherine). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, paranoid
schizophrenia, is the presence of prominent delusions or auditory hallucinations in the context of
relative preservation of cognitive functioning and affect (APA, 1994 p.287). Since this subtype of
schizophrenia affects the cognitive portion of the brain that perceives things, in this person, it causes
him to also suffer from somatic delusions. This is a type of delusion that relates to the functions,
sensations, and physical appearance of the body, causing the person to believe that their body is
diseased or abnormal (APA, 2000). As a child it was thought that Richard had suffered from a mental
illness, but he was not committed. Although on the outside looking in, it looked as if he was the
average child since he did graduate high school, but no one knew the darkness that was kept hidden.

beginning of the CGI feature format, dating back to the nineties, Dreamworks and Pixar have been

Benzodiazepine family. Xanax (Alprazolam) is a drug that is prescribed for anxiety to 48 million
people every year. That is billions of pills going out every day to reduce anxiety. Addiction to this drug
can have tremendous effects on one s body and mind. If someone s bottle is refilled late and they don t

who is willing to give or sell their prescription to them. Xanax and others can be obtained through
doctors and even more commonly, presses. Alprazolam and Klonopins can be crushed up with other
drugs for the average street user. These presses cannot be prescribed from a doctor. Normally dosed at

Multinational Startup Spotify Ab Company
Introduction Headquartered in London and Stockholm, Spotify Ltd. is based upon the Swedish startup
Spotify AB, founded in 2006 by two entrepreneurs Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon and launched in
2008. In the digital music industry, the streaming market, which represents 10% of the sector, has
grown by 51.3% in 2013 while revenues from the download market (iTunes, Amazon) has fallen by
2.1%. Spotify perfectly illustrates this superior growth as the leader in terms of innovation in this
market. Considered to be one of the 10 most innovative companies in the U.K. in 2014 by Fast

The Marketing Environment A. The Macroenvironment: PEST Analysis We shall see how Spotify
integrates this broader set of forces in its strategy. Political factors: We believed that if we could build
a service which was better than piracy, then we could convince people to stop illegal file sharing, and
start consuming music legally again (Ek, 2013). It tries to attract customers who previously relied on
illegal options for their music needs. Digital piracy is the single most important factor restraining
development of the music business. Governments were involved to fight against it and established
laws such as Digital Economy Act in the U.K. The turnaround dates back to 2009 when these anti
piracy laws combined with The Pirate Bay trial inclined customers to try the new Spotify platform. It
has successfully helped curb the illegal downloading of music since it does not allow you to download
the track. If you want to own the track, you will be redirected to a legal vendor. Therefore Spotify
claims to have reduced the number of people who pirated music by 25% between 2009 and 2011. As
such the streaming industry helps governments to combat piracy but in the medium; to long term some
political forces could play against this industry: pressure from governments to ensure that the laws are

Human Impact on the Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Cycles
Danielle Abbadusky
Everest University
Human impact on the cycling matter in ecosystems can change a lot of things. Humans can either help
or hurt things. The carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles are the three cycles of matter in
ecosystems. What are these cycles? How do humans effect each one of these individual cycles? What
are some examples of humans effecting these cycles? What is the carbon cycle? Sequence of
processes through which carbon compounds move from one carbon reservoir or sink (such as forests
and oceans) to another (such as atmosphere) and back. Since more carbon dioxide is being released

These compounds are taken up by plants as nutrients from the soil and converted into plant proteins
(amino acids). Plant proteins become animal proteins when eaten and metabolized by herbivorous
animals, and when carnivorous animals eat the herbivorous. These proteins return to the soil through
animal excrement and the decomposition of dead animals and plants, and are converted into carbon
dioxide, water, and ammonia (gaseous compound of nitrogen and hydrogen) by a set of bacteria in the
soil. A portion of this ammonia is converted into soil nitrogen (fixed nitrogen) by another set of
bacteria and the balance is released into the atmosphere as free nitrogen (N2). (nitrogen cycle, n.d.)
Human impact on this cycle is very significant. Farmers plant crops such as; peas, beans, and alfalfa.
These crops pull nitrogen from the air which helps raise the rate of nitrogen fixation on the land.
Farmers also plant corn and wheat which are sprayed with nitrogen derived from industrial fixation.
All of these crops help humans to survive. Having these crops benefiting humans we are more than
doubling the amount of nitrogen that s moved from the atmosphere to the land. When sulfur is
released by burning fossil fuels, which humans do, this is killing and polluting our lakes and ponds
and killing our forests. With these and other chemicals being put into our land, these are reaching our
oceans and big areas of water and this will

With the implementation of the affordable care act (ACA) in March 2010. There was an expectation to
revolutionize the U.S. health care system. The expectation was to make the health care more
affordable to everyone. In doing this unexpected challenges to the health care system providers arose.
When the newly insured were provided with health care coverage many of the newly insured try to use
their health benefits. Health care providers reported higher than expected use of oncology, maternity,
musculoskeletal and other specialty services, from the newly insured. As the population of health care
users grew in size after the ACA the health care labor force did not grow appropriately to
accommodate such drastic changes in the frequent usage of health care facilities by the newly insured.

medical terminology is key to be able to communicate with colleagues, bosses, and other health care

help prevent these natural disasters by helping each other to help predict and someday prevent them.
There are many reasons to help prevent or stop these natural disasters. These solutions are available

Downtown Victoria Architectural Analysis
Downtown Victoria is filled with a great deal of architectural structures that vary in style from old

Although many of the more unique buildings are small, they display plenty of character through their
colours, shape and materials. Victoria has modernized some aspects of its architecture but it has
managed to keep many of its aged and Eurocentric inspired buildings that capture Victoria s character.

York City style apartment which was short, made of rustic red brick, displaying rounded window

as I came across 1675 Douglas Street s Terasen Gas Building. The Terasen Gas building was very
generic and modern office looking building. This type of building was one where if you came across a

Lacking financial assistance and exposed to the early onset of abuse by his father, Bragg realized that
there was a strict line, which drew improvised rural White Southerners and their counterparts as
unequal. The conception eventually influenced the phrase White Trash, a derogative term that
described the poor whites living in the United States with a degraded standard way of living. This
attack on moral failings eventually became a part of Bragg. Later in his memoir, Rick provides his
account where a wealthy fraternity at Jacksonville State throws a celebration for the children of poor
families. Initially, Rick extends his gratitude for their kindness but he has trouble relating with the
fraternity. Rick describes them as affluent people not rich by Manhattan standards, but Possum trot

bitter at the ignorance of the careless individuals who live with their backs turned to society. The
significance of this is that Bragg wished to capture of essence of the degree of meanness, degrees of
hatred, and of ignorance, that plagued the world (Bragg 62). Just like him, thousands of citizens in
United State experience prejudice and social disparity at least once in their lifetime. What makes it

How Did Aristotle Obey The First Cause To Change
Aristotle imagines an infinitely vast and eternally complicated universe, all under the control of a
divine being. He states that the reason for the universe must be love because if God did not desire the
universe, He would not allow the universe to exist. Through further observation, Aristotle then claims
that a change must be caused to change. It is through these changes that all physical entities appear
only temporarily. He then claims that there are four fundamental principles that describe all causes.
The first cause is the material cause, which states that all objects have an immanent material that
brings them into being. This is similar to Thales argument of origin where he stated that all moist
things must be brought into being from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The material cause, formal cause, and final cause all rely on an omnipotent being. The final cause is
the cause of the other causes, but if one were to suggest there was no ultimate purpose then the
efficient cause would explain all naturalistic creations. I would suggest that there is an agent that
causes the change. It is the light that reflects off a stump that makes the wood appear brown. It is the
result of evolution which is caused by the procreation of the surviving that allows for human beings to
exist. The material cause and formal cause can be explained by the efficient cause. I agree with the
final cause, because it answers the purpose of the efficient cause. If things can only be brought to
motion by an agent of change, then why bring the initial physical entity into motion if not for a
purpose. If every object is caused to motion by a purpose it must in some way be contributing to a
purpose that justifies its existence. Going back to Aristotle s initial argument, it is unreasonable that
something could come out of nothing if not for a divine being with a desire for the Universe s
existence. This God must desire the universe for some reason, this reason is the purpose of its

Ergotism in The Salem Witch Trials
Ergotism in Salem
The Salem Witch Trials were a horrendous event in the history of America and was the first of its
kind. A question that has risen up numerous times is what was the actual cause of the trials. We know
that a few girls made the first accusations, but why. I will now explain how Salem became one of the
most notorious towns in Massachusetts. Ergot poisoning was the cause for the witch trials as it caused
the girls to become crazed and delirious.
First you may ask yourself what exactly is Ergot poisoning. Ergot is a fungal disease of rye that grows
in the ear of the Cereal. Early colonists reported that they were dissatisfied with the common grass as
it made their cattle ill.Ergot was first medically reported only a few years before the trials. This means
that ergotism was a relevant disease at the time of the trials. You can acquire ergot poisoning simply by
eating contaminated bread therefore the girls would not know that they were being poisoned. Ergotism
Symptoms include crawling sensation in the skin and tingling in the fingers, vertigo, headaches,
disturbances in sensation, painful muscular contractions leading to convulsions and vomiting. A few of
the mental disturbances include mania, melancholia, psychosis, and delirium.(Caporeal 23)The
accusers may have lost their minds to this awful disease. The biting, pinching, and pricking with pins
may allude to the crawling sensations under the skin experienced by ergotism victims.(caporeal 25)

Oil Is A Critical Piece Of Our Energy Infrastructure
Crude oil is a critical piece of our energy infrastructure. In recent years, there has been increasing
demand on crude oil and a large growth in unconventional oil sources to serve our energy
requirements such as the bitumen oil sands deposits in Northern Alberta, Canada. Unlike traditional
oil extraction, in the oil sands hot water or steam [1] is required to remove oil from the high viscous
bitumen deposits. This extraction process consumes a large volume of water with major oil producers
consuming on an average 3.1 barrels of water for the production of 1 barrel of oil with 15 20% coming

Treating this water is challenging as hydrocarbon particles are stably dissolved in the water. Currently,
the OSPW is stored in the tailing ponds to allow toxins to degrade which has a large impact on local
wildlife. For example, it is estimated that in situ mining operations such as oil sands production have
caused 71% decline in caribou herd from 1996 to 2008 [9,10]. The current cleaning methods are too
slow for the demand, expensive, and have challenges removing oils from stable emulsion conditions
seen in OSPW [9,12]. Oil spills also contain dispersed and emulsified hydrocarbon toxins. Oil spills
can during any stage from extraction to usage and can have a large impact. For example, the 2010 BP
deep water mining accident released 4.9 billion barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico in 87 days [16

Weathering intensifies oil dissolution in seawater, causing severe damage to marine life from toxic

Using Homemade Solar Cookers And Solar Energy
Using Homemade Solar Cookers and Solar Energy to Pasteurize Non Potable Water by Killing
Harmful Bacteria, Parasites, and Diseases
Maia J. Graudick
Brown School
Abstract
In less developed countries, there is a lack of availability in potable water for safe consumption. Using
a device known as a solar cooker may allow for cheap and easy access to water without worry of
contracting diseases. Solar cookers utilize solar energy by focusing the sun s rays into water, heating
the water to a temperature hot enough to kill harmful pathogens. A homemade solar cooker was filled
100ml of non potable water and set out in the sun for 50 minutes. The experiment resulted in a success
with 95.9% of all organisms in the water being killed, effectively pasteurizing the water for safe
drinking. The experiment provided evidence to support that solar cookers are reliable option for
pasteurizing non potable water in less developed countries.
Using Homemade Solar Cookers and Solar Energy to Pasteurize Non Potable Water by Killing

TASK 2
Case Study
The problems Mary is facing from when she takes on her new role as a manager in the call centre are a
growingly bad customer service caused by a low working morale. This has been accepted and even
fuelled by the former management as well as staff not willing to take responsibility for their work,
including follow ups on customer complaints. What is taking place here seems like the blame game ,
which refers to everyone pointing their finger to someone else if any issue or complaint occurs. The
staff is being left very insecure about what is expected from them and the specific requirements of
their job. The team leaders are not receptive for suggestions and ideas from the call centre operators
and they actually feel threatened if someone comes up with a better idea, so they refuse to act . Due to
this situation the company has already lost a major client as well as having call centre operators
resigning from their working contracts. Mary has been asked to help improving this situation.
Overlooking the situation in the call centre and Mary s position I would suggest that she has to act
immediately and before even considering any changes on the level of the call centre operators
(operational level), which have been blamed for most of the misery, she has to sit down with the
senior management or the CEO of the company to get really clear on the companies goals.

Examples Of Propaganda In 1984
A person can live their whole lifetime without questioning what could truly rules over their life.
Whenever it may be an underlying truth or an invisible force, people can live without ever knowing
what controls their fate. As for mega corporations or government intervention who act like these
hidden forces, their use propaganda and creating false facades to trick the public in a life of safe
living. Propaganda and secret government organizations are a common theme seen in various
dystopian fictions such as 1984, We, and the Fallout video game series.
Propaganda might not be enough for citizens within a dystopia, but secret government services can
play in the shadows to enforce their ideals. Within 1984, directed by Michael Radford, Winston ...

In the video game franchise of Fallout, made by Bethesda Softworks, the world has been consumed by
the use of nuclear energy. In this alternate universe during the 1950s, the world is stunned by the
immense of the atomic bomb and plans to harness the energy for not only everyday objects, but also
for world domination. As a last resort for the last remaining bit of oil, the Chinese tries to take Alaska
but is swiftly demolished. After time, the Great War commenced in 2077, consisting of only 2 hours of
the world nuking each other. Before the Great War started, the US Government funds a company
called Vault Tec to create underground vaults that can self sustain an entire town sized populations for
hundred of years and eventually repopulating the earth after an apocalyptic disaster. What seems like a
pipe dream was actually the government using the vaults as secret experiments for various scenarios
when venturing into space. Each vault had a special experiment, from having a 1:200 men to woman
ratio, leaving a slight opening in the vaults, or even locking one guy up in a vault with puppets. As the
nukes began to drop, the US Government turned into the Enclave and were sent with scientist tto il
rigs to continue their work towards living in space. US citizens, on the other hand, retreated into their
safe vaults or were tested against fate in the fiery bright power

These firms usually produce the same goods and are usually at least to some extent in direct
competition with each other.
Motives for horizontal mergers
Greater efficiency, for example getting rid of duplicated management roles
Greater use of staff, under utilised staff might be used at another plant or location
Greater control of the market
Greater combined buying power, therefore gain economies through bulk buying.
Job saving, redundancies almost always follow mergers, and this creates cost savings for the new
organisation
Eliminate competition; what better way to eliminate a competitor than to merge with them, this helps
reduce down competition and mean price competition is reduced. (We have seen how governments
may oppose this)
Increase market share, you will gain new customers, possibly in locations where you didn t have any
before
Examples of horizontal mergers
P amp; O and Stena Line merged in November 1997 saving 1000 out of a combined workforce of
5000
Commercial Union and General Accident merged, the merger caused nearly 3000 redundancies
Lateral mergers

Warrior Chief Attendants
The Warrior Chief flanked by Warriors and Attendants is an art piece from the Nigerian state of Benin.
It s a brass artwork made using a process called wax casting which involves creating molds into the
desired shapes and pouring molten metal (in this case brass) into the molds. As the name suggests this
art piece shows a chief with his warriors and attendants. Outside of these obvious details derived from
the title, this art piece is laden with different characteristics of representation and symbolism that
narrate the artist s story behind the artwork.
A close examination of this piece concluded that this artwork is a form of propaganda; which serves
the purpose of showing the power, prestige and authority of a figure. The artist purposefully made the
middle figure the most captivating and attention drawing figure for this reason. As such this papers
focal point of analysis will be studying the different artistic tools the artist used to bring out this
particular form of propaganda.

The elaborate accessories he wears on his hands feet and across his chest not only differentiate him
from his subjects but also aid in showing his wealth and high status. His headgear is more detailed and
different from the warriors, the attendants have none; further highlighting the significance of the chief.
It is difficult to not notice the chiefs powerful stare and stern facial expression. His eyes and nose sizes
are clearly larger than that of the other figures to make his face more menacing to highlight his
dominance and charge. He is clutching a spear on his left hand symbolizing how he exerts power over
the warriors. The chief does not carry much; he is not as carrying as much as the warriors and
attendants. In one hand he holds a flat fan looking object, whose designs suggest that it is an
ornamental object that possibly displays his prestige and is not a weapon or

WELCOME ADDRESS by Host Pastor
The great God that deserves to be praised greatly is our God (Psalm 145:3). Jesus Christ, the same
yesterday, today and forever. Hallelujah! It was just like yesterday when the Lord told us three years
before this parish was birthed that we would be coming to Akron. As it is written, Though thy
beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase, we have seen God s faithfulness over
the last seven years in every life, every marriage, every home in the church, in the parish and in our
land.
Our ever faithful, ever true Lord and Savior has proven Himself in innumerable ways as The Alpha
and the Omega. We remember the Stow Ohio dinner with friends held on Sunday, May 9th 2010. HE
has shown that He alone has the final say in the affairs of men, The Almighty. As our Helper, He told
us we are stepping into our season of help. HE is still manifesting Himself as the ever fresh, ever new

earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater

As it is written, you are complete in Him (Colossians 2:10), I prophesy a completion for you, your
household, your vocation and your ministry IJN! Even as the Lord had to touch the blind man twice
(Mark 8: 22 25) to bring restoration and completion his way. I rejoice with you, as you rejoice with the

himself will give you strength and support, and make you complete in every good thing (1 Peter 5:10).

George Wesley Bellow s Rain On The River
The artist George Wesley Bellow s oil painting, Rain on the river, 1908, 15 is s a famous piece of art
located in the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. In the RISD Museum George Wesley Bellow s
oil painting is located in the modern and contemporary gallery. The colors used by the artist help tell
the story of the painting. While observing the painting the smoke from the train stood out the most,
this seems to be the most important part for the curator. The bright modern building makes George
Wesley Bellow s painting stand out because of his use of dark colors. George Wesley Bellow focuses
on the white smoke from the train and the dark colors in his oil painting, Rain on the river. The smoke

Figurative language helps with the development of theme because they are more likely to engage their readers and make their argument more relevant and convincing. Homer uses figurative language in the Odyssey to describe the themes of sacrifices and the love of home. In the Odyssey, Homer uses figurative language to describe the theme of the love of home. In The Lotus Eaters, it says, All hands aboard; come, clear the bench and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose hope of home, (103 105). • 3. Case Study of C C 1. In general, how did C C s first organizational structure contribute to the store managers dissatisfaction? C C Grocery s initial organizational structure operated under a vertical linkage. Vertical linkage is utilized to coordinate activities between the top and bottom of an organization and are designed primarily for control of the organization (Daft,2013) Store managers were responsible for the grocery line, front end department and general store operations but had little knowledge about merchandising, meat and produce. Instead, their duties included cleanliness of store, employee appearance, and sufficient checkout service and price accuracy. Another factor that contributed to poor cooperation was failing to provide these managers with opportunities to learn skills for promotions, which lead to resentment and poor morale. Departments were unable to effectively work together and build strategies as team but instead were working towards their own agenda. The serve the customer mentality created by Doug Cummins no longer existed in the stores. 4. How would the proposed reorganization address the problems addressed in each question above? Under the new proposed restructuring, the meat, grocery and produce departments would all be under the store manager. This helps improve the frustration the store managers had with the lack of authority with the meat and produce department managers. Store managers can work more closely with the department managers to learn what their department goals and issues are to work on combined strategies that benefit their store. By continuing to work as team towards common goals, more trust will be formed and the store will operate more efficiently. This allows the district supervisor to now focus on training and development, as the consultants proposed the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Influence Processes a Leadership Analysis Essays William Scott Influence Processes: A Leadership Analysis Leadership Ethics for Managers June 1, 2008 Abstract A leader s ability to influence and motivate followers is a crucial skill that effective leaders must possess. This is why organizations allow leaders to control many of the operational functions of the organization. By controlling several key operational components, the leader is able to direct and institute change throughout the organization. The purpose of this paper is to analyze leader influence models and present the practical implications of their use. By having control over the organizations reward system, the leader can mold the organization into one that conforms and promotes their organizational vision. Used correctly, this form of leadership influence can effectively change an organization over time by rewarding those who buy into and promote the leaders style of leadership. Promoting and Selecting Leaders: In addition to the above influence factors, leaders also are empowered to select and promote the leadership within the organization (Nahavandi, 2006). This provides them with a powerful tool to influence and effectively create an organizational following of their values and vision. By selecting leaders who mirror their values and leadership style, the leader is able to create a loyal and like minded leadership staff. While this may be an effective influence tool, the leader risks alienating key personnel and breeding doubts about their ability to lead if they utilize this form of influence in an unethical manner. Modeling Behaviors: Finally, leaders can also use their influence to model the behavior of their subordinates (Nahavandi, 2006). They achieve this by providing guidance and advise to their followers and by inviting others to participate in organizational team building activities. When leaders actively promote and encourage their followers to follow their examples they are effectively molding the future behaviors of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Essay The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe s The Pit and the pendulum demonstrate an arabesque look at the human mind. Part of the terror of The Pit and the Pendulum stems from the apocalyptic imagery with which Poe establishes his narrative framework. The narrator of the tale seems not to parallel the characters of Poe s other tales, in that he is very sane and his torture comes from without rather than from within. Poe has used apocalyptic imagery in many of his works (Spealght 235). Condemned to torture and death by the black robed, white lipped judges of the Inquisition in the opening scene of the tale, the narrator observes seven candles, which first dissolve in his mind into seven angels wearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fittingly, then, Poe concludes his tale with blaring trumpets, fiery walls, and a thousand thunders , apocalyptic images that describe the narrator s deliverance by General LaSalle as a sort of Second Coming of Christ. Indeed, removed from its allusive context, the narrator s rescue is difficult to account for since, as David H. Hirsch has pointed out, it is neither foreshadowed in the tale nor congruent with its overwhelming Beard The Pit and the Pendulum 3 oppression. However, in light of Revelation 16.15 Behold, I come as a thief the narrator as well as the reader accepts the unexpectedness of LaSalle s and the narrator s escape. Commentators have of course, recognized Poe s allusions to Revelation and several apocryphal books of the Bible. Hirsch observes that the final paragraphs of the tale neatly counterpoint the first by reversing the narrator s loss of hearing, and then collapse with auditory amplification and expansion. According to Hirsch, the dreamy indeterminate hum of the opening lines is caught up in the discordant hum of the conclusion; the burr of a mill wheel is amplified into the thousand thunders, and the collapsing image of the blackness of darkness supervened is inverted into the expanding image of the fiery walls rushing outward . Hirsch suggests, moreover, that the outstretched arm of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Should Be Done Without Regard Things without all remedy should be done without regard; what s done is done This quote nicely captures our cultural unquestioned belief about regret that states that lamenting what has already occurred is foolish and that it is better to simply move on and forward. The initial thought when hearing this quote is that it is an admirable philosophy that people should follow, however, that is until I tell you who said it and in what context. This quote was spoken by Lady Macbeth convincing her husband to stop feeling sorry about murdering people. Maybe not a role model after all. The thought of not having control over what would happen to me on that rollercoaster ride horrified me. Yet I was angry with myself for not going on it. After this experience I pushed it out of my mind, completely believing in what society has drilled into my head, which is that people should forget the past and focus only on the future. However I have come to learn that ignoring that regret is worse. I think it is important to acknowledge it s existence. Actually, not being able to feel regret is a characteristic of those with brain damage. To refuse to feel remorse is almost like self diagnosing yourself as mentally insane. Dr. Strangelove And The Cold War The Cold War was a period of several decades of tension and the threat of nuclear conflict between the two remaining superpowers that emerged from WWII, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The 1964 film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, directed by Stanley Kubrick, depicts the overlying themes of the Cold War in a comedic fashion. This film s full embodiment of the Cold War is seen through its representation of the time period, and the sheer competitiveness between the United States and Russia. Later, General Buck Turgidson, one of the President s top advisors, echoes this exact idea in the war room and proposes to the U.S. President a full commitment. This was one possible solution that could have neutralized all of Russia in one wave of nuclear missiles; however, this strategy is frowned upon and dismissed by the President as it would reflect poorly on the U.S. diplomatic reputation in the long run. An aspect of the Cold War that Kubrick focuses on is the blatant lack of trust between the conflicting nations. In a scene where a Russian ambassador is being brought into the war room, General Turgidson is disturbed by having all of the U.S. plans open in front of the enemy. Four is the all or none thinking: perfectionists think that they are worthless if their projects aren t done perfectly. If one gets B, instead of an A, they might think that they are a total failure. Fifth is the overemphasis on shoulds : They live in a life of standards and rules to lead their life. With an overemphasis on what they need to do, they forget what they want. Last is the belief that others are easily successful: perfectionists see others accomplishing things and think that they do it with minimum effort and little stress. The Ford Motor Company And General Motors The largest contributor to Canada s Gross Domestic Product is Canada s largest manufacturing employer (Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association, 2011), but how has this sector surpassed all other industries? and how has this sector survived all the economic destructions riddled throughout Canada s history? This is the Canadian automotive industry and it is enormous and powerful yet so threatened by politics. Two of the largest players in the automotive industry are the Ford Motor Company and General Motors. By comparing the two paths both parallel companies have taken throughout over one hundred years of operations (Dykes, 2015), we can expose proper and improper business strategies within Canada. We can adventure through the strengths built up by management, the weaknesses that have attacked through the inside, the potential opportunities forecasted to arise, and the threats that may enforce themselves towards these industrial giants. From this we may be able to gather just what it takes to survive the Canadian market. The Ford Motor company was founded in Windsor Ontario in 1904 and initiated the commercialization of the automotive industry in Canada (Dykes, 2015). Most people want to die a peaceful death and desire the same outcome for their family and friends. Medical advancements have resulted in people living longer lives with chronic illnesses. Despite the advancements in medicine and the available treatments of today, sometimes the patient is still unable to escape intolerable suffering; the patient s quality of life diminishes. Informed consent must be obtained either by the patient, or if the patient is unable to do so, a legal surrogate before palliative sedation is initiated (Knight Espinosa, 2010). Knight and Espinosa recommended receiving a second opinion as to whether the patient is an appropriate candidate for palliative sedation. Terminal weaning is when mechanical ventilation is discontinued for a patient expected to die without its support (Knight Espinosa, 2010). One of the most common methods of discontinuation is through slowly reducing the fraction of inspired oxygen (Knight Espinosa, 2010). Terminal extubation is the removal of the endotracheal tube, and this can be done during or after a terminal weaning process (Knight Espinosa, 2010, p. 527). Raised by a very controlling father who did not get along with his mentally ill wife and always misdirected his anger toward Richard and his sister with physical abuse (Dennison, Victoria, 2009). As a child at age 10 Richard became extremely fascinated with fire and mutilating cats. Later throughout his teenage years he began heavily drinking and smoking. This soon led up to his hectic early adulthood when he was then diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic who suffered from somatic delusions. (Ramsland, Katherine). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, paranoid schizophrenia, is the presence of prominent delusions or auditory hallucinations in the context of relative preservation of cognitive functioning and affect (APA, 1994 p.287). Since this subtype of schizophrenia affects the cognitive portion of the brain that perceives things, in this person, it causes him to also suffer from somatic delusions. This is a type of delusion that relates to the functions, sensations, and physical appearance of the body, causing the person to believe that their body is diseased or abnormal (APA, 2000). These compounds are taken up by plants as nutrients from the soil and converted into plant proteins (amino acids). Plant proteins become animal proteins when eaten and metabolized by herbivorous animals, and when carnivorous animals eat the herbivorous. These proteins return to the soil through animal excrement and the decomposition of dead animals and plants, and are converted into carbon dioxide, water, and ammonia (gaseous compound of nitrogen and hydrogen) by a set of bacteria in the soil. A portion of this ammonia is converted into soil nitrogen (fixed nitrogen) by another set of bacteria and the balance is released into the atmosphere as free nitrogen (N2). (nitrogen cycle, n.d.) Human impact on this cycle is very significant. Having these crops benefiting humans we are more than doubling the amount of nitrogen that s moved from the atmosphere to the land. Solar cookers utilize solar energy by focusing the sun s rays into water, heating the water to a temperature hot enough to kill harmful pathogens. A homemade solar cooker was filled 100ml of non potable water and set out in the sun for 50 minutes. The experiment resulted in a success with 95.9% of all organisms in the water being killed, effectively pasteurizing the water for safe drinking. The experiment provided evidence to support that solar cookers are reliable option for pasteurizing non potable water in less developed countries. Using Homemade Solar Cookers and Solar Energy to Pasteurize Non Potable Water by Killing Harmful Bacteria, Parasites, and Diseases Water is highly important in sustaining human life. Untreated water however, can have very harmful effects on the body. Water that is not of drinking standards, or non potable water, can contain harmful and possibly fatal pathogens. The team leaders are not receptive for suggestions and ideas from the call centre operators and they actually feel threatened if someone comes up with a better idea, so they refuse to act . Due to this situation the company has already lost a major client as well as having call centre operators resigning from their working contracts. Mary has been asked to help improving this situation. Overlooking the situation in the call centre and Mary s position I would suggest that she has to act immediately and before even considering any changes on the level of the call centre operators (operational level), which have been blamed for most of the misery, she has to sit down with the senior management or the CEO of the company to get really clear on the companies goals. ...
