Tesla Motors, Inc.
Tesla Motors, Inc. is an American automotive and energy storage giant firm that designs and
manufactures electronically powered cars, their components and battery products. Tesla Motors is a
public company that trades on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol TSLA. Tesla reported
profit in first quarter of 2013, which was first time ever in their history. Since its foundation in 2003,
Tesla Motors has recorded most noticeable breakthroughs in the market of electric vehicles by their
own developed power train technology. The technology was founded by group of engineers in Silicon
Valley who wanted to prove that electronic cars could outperform the gasoline powered cars. With
instant torque, incredible power, and zero emissions, Tesla s products would be cars without
compromise. Each new generation would be increasingly economic, helping the company work
towards its mission: to accelerate the world s transition to sustainable transport. In 2012, Tesla
launched Model S. Built from the ground up to be 100 percent electric. With room for seven
passengers and more than 64 cubic feet of storage, Model S provides the comfort and utility of a

Julian Thomas Humanism
In the comparison of Julian Thomas chapter Archaeology s Humanism and the Materiality of the Body
, and Joanna R. Sofaer s chapter The Body as an Archeological Resource it was found that individuals
are characterized by cultural identities. In Thomas chapter there was an emphasis on how individuals
view themselves, particularly in regards to associated cultural stigmas. Sofaer claims that the body is
the major archeological source with cultural characteristics.
In Archaeology s Humanism and the Materiality of the Body , the major idea that was highlighted was
the modern era the main philosophy is that of humanism, which led to the idea of post processual
archaeology . Philosophical humanism incorporates the idea of reason and man to ... Show more

However The Body as an Archeological Resource , seemed to be more focused on the archeological
aspects of how bodies are understood and analyzed in archeology for the bigger picture. Archaeology
s Humanism and the Materiality of the Body was more a philosophical debate about how people
perceive archeology and seemed to be very negative and cynical. The second reading tied more into
the overall significance of the class as it highlights how people are understood in the global and
overall context. The first reading, which began by emphasizing that cultural identifiers should be
removed when analyzing humans, did not make sense to me. Our personalities are shaped by who we
are in society and how we have made a change. If the cultural associations were removed from
Alexander the Great, he would no longer be known as the great divine ruler. Furthermore, the
Holocausts was not just caused by a man who wanted power, rather a man who did not like a specific
culture caused it. I personally disagree with Osteoarchaeologists, as different social barriers created
history and the overall importance of archeology is to understand history and past cultures.
Archeology is the study of understanding humans, cultures and the past, not just focusing on the

Famine, Affluence, And Morality By Peter Singer
In his essay Famine, Affluence, and Morality moral philosopher Peter Singer (2013) argues that
affluent individuals morally ought to provide an assistance to absolutely poor people up to the point
when further giving requires them to sacrifice anything of comparable moral significance. He relies on
the example with drowning child when proving that we should accept his strong principle which is if it
is in our power to prevent something bad from happening without thereby sacrificing anything of
comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). There are a lot of
objections attempting to show that this example is not a good analogy to the international aid case. If
any of them manage to do so, then the Singer s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Singer is focused on ethics and therefore his argumentation is not vulnerable to psychological or
sociological criticism discussed above. However, it can still be an important issue for practical ethicist
to consider if people will actually stick to his principle after they accept that it is morally right. Singer
must have understood that many people will probably find the his strong principle too demanding or
counter intuitive and will not follow it. To solve this problem he has worked out the moderate version
of the principle which is if it is in our power to prevent something very bad from happening, without
thereby sacrificing anything morally significant, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). This
principle is more plausible for human nature as it leaves some space for individual s personal interests.
It is less ambitious and does not promote absolute equality of welfare and resources. Singer himself
agreed that in order to do the maximum to reduce absolute poverty, we should advocate a standard
lower (Singer 1993, 245). However, I think that the weak principle Singer proposes is a bit shaky
because anything morally significant is determined by subjective judgment and can indeed be morally
incorrect sometimes. For instance, in the case of drowning child I am no

Cause And Effect Of Tambora
This year marks the 202nd anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tambora. Many have never heard of
this explosion, but Tambora had massive historical effects. Let s explore what this explosion was and
how it impacted culture in the 1800 s. Mount Tambora erupted on the Island of Sumbawa on April 5th
in 1815. It was recorded as the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history (Britannica). The effect of
this massive eruption traveled far beyond the small Indonesian island. It impacted multiple and
incredibly diverse aspects of society across Asia, Europe and North America. It affected art, literature,
transportation, climate, economies, health, opium production and even American religion.
The volcano had been dormant for hundreds of years and this violent explosion lasted days, sending
ash into the atmosphere (D arcy Wood). At the time, there were both native villagers living in the area
and British officers, as the area was a colony under the British crown. Most of the surviving records of
the explosion come from these British officers, some of whom didn t actually witness the explosion
but heard it and assumed the explosion was from rebels on the island. A captain of a nearby East India
Company ship reported ash falling out of the sky and By noon, the light that had remained in the
eastern part of the horizon disappeared, and complete darkness had covered the face of day (D arcy
Wood). At the time of the explosion another British subject, Sir Thomas Raffles, was the governor of
Java, Indonesia. His compiled record of first hand accounts confirming the blackened sky and falling
ash (Skulls). Similar accounts of darkness were recorded throughout the region, which was due to the
sheer volume of ash that was released by the volcano. The ash blackened sky was not the only impact
of the eruption. The more far reaching effects of the eruption would not be felt until the summer of
1816, when the eruption gasses and particles so affected worldwide meteorological patterns that the
western world called 1816 The Year Without a Summer .
It is hard to imagine that the eruption of distant Mount Tambora inspired and influenced the work of
many artists and yet is was clearly evident in art and literature across the

Human Factors Influencing Polices In The Workplace
Human factors influence polices in the BYOD practice in the workplace because for the most part
employees are comfortable and prefer using their own devices compared to company issued devices as
they can often multitask between personal and business access. The use of mobile devices comes with
the consequences of the device being stolen, lost and exposed to threats. The possibility of these
devices falling in the wrong hands or stranger not authorized access to data could result to harmful
software application being uploaded or downloaded which could infect the device and compromise the
network. The use of public and unsecure WIFI connection is also an easy avenue for mobile devices to

Disappointment In Madame Bovary
One of the most common emotions humans have is disappointment, or the feeling of dissatisfaction
and emptiness. Most often, this feeling comes through the loss of love. For example, breaking up with
your partner can leave you feeling defeated and lonely. Once this happens, one usually attempts to
move on and forget about that person, sometimes in the way of finding someone to fill their void in
their empty heart. In Gustave Flaubert s master novel Madame Bovary, there are multiple encounters
with dissatisfaction that creates the theme of disappointment. The two main characters that Flaubert
uses to show dissatisfaction through are Emma Bovary, also known as Madame Bovary, and Charles
Bovary. Emma Bovary seems to be faced with empty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows the conflict of how Flaubert never allows Emma to be in a grasping distance of her
desired satisfaction. She is continually always so close to her longing desire, but can never quite grab
it. The reader gets one of the first glimpses at her disappointment several weeks after the Vaubyessard
Ball, still dreaming about the magical night she had. From the beginning of July she counted on her
fingers how many weeks remained before October, thinking that the Marquis d Andervilliers would
perhaps give another ball at Vaubyessard. But September passed by without one letter or visit. After
the distress of this disappointment, her heart once more remained empty (79). That night at the ball
gave Emma a feeling like no other of how love should feel and look like. It seems like from that point
on, she has a concrete idea of what love is. With the ball still humming in her ears, she was trying to
stay awake in order to prolong the illusion of this luxurious life (79). This longing to back to such an
illusion shows that Emma is continually being pulled away from Charles and toward something she
can t attain. She continues to drift away from Charles a greater amount once she begins her affair with
Rodolphe. All was going well with Rodolphe until, of course, Emma lost interest, along with
Rodolphe losing his love for her and only

What Is The Theme Of Honor In The Killer Angels
The civil war was one of America s biggest wars it had ever been in. Over 51,000 people suffered
causality when it was over. In the book The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, it recounts the story of
the battle of Gettysburg. Many historical people (Robert E. Lee for example) are included in the novel.
The novel switches between the confederates and the union by chapters. Robert E. Lee and Joshua L.
Chamberlain are the two main characters who tell their sides of the confederate and union. Both men,
Lee and Chamberlain, showed honor in their own way through the novel. Honor can be defined in

This semester for my civic engagement, I got the opportunity to work with WKAR. It is part of
Michigan State University Broadcasting Services, a division of MSU Communication Arts Sciences. It
includes WKAR TV, WKAR Radio, WKAR.org, Radio Reading Service, WKAR Ready to Learn
Service and Interactive Video Services. During my time with them, I got the opportunity to work with
Jennifer Preslar. She is the Event/Project Coordinator for their Public Media Department. The project
that I m currently work on is the Indie Lens Pop Up, Screening of I Am Not Your Negro by James
Baldwin. For this project, I ve got the opportunity to help Jennifer with marketing and promoting, and
securing guest speakers. Through out this essay I will further expand on my experience with WKAR,
and what I have learned thus far. The mission of MSU Broadcasting Services is to connect people to
powerful ideas that inspire personal growth, exploration of our world and positive change. (WKAR).
From what observed, everyone in the WKAR does their best to abide by the mission statement.
Everyone in this environment works together, despite their position. The employees and my fellow
interns, really created a welcoming and comfortable work environment. I also noticed that everyone
can propose new civic engagement projects. For example, I was working with Jennifer and another
intern came in and proposed a civic engagement idea and asked for Jennifer s help. Without hesitation
Jennifer agreed to help her, and was

The Importance Of Hairstyles In The 1950s
Hairstyles not only let us bring out our inner shine and creative personality, but the importance of
hairstyles in the 1950s has emphasized the way we do our hair today. Even though we have different
tastes in trendy hairstyles today, men, women, and children back in the day still turned it up a notch
and expressed themselves in extraordinary ways. Women, men, and children s Hairstyles grew
significant importance. Society today has over thousands of different hairstyles for women, men, and
children giving us an opportunity to all be unique in our own way. There are various hairstyles for
women in the 1950s that happened to be super trendy, that went from short to long, but a few of them
happened to stand out and be the most popular hairstyles to me in that time period. One of the most
famous haircuts was the Short and Curly haircut, lots of female singers and actresses like Marilyn
Monroe carried on this hairstyle. It was perfectly curled and a slight version of the bouffant hairstyle.
The Bouffant was a dramatic hairstyle, they would backcomb their hair and use a bit of hairspray to
make sure it had volume. The famous American pop singer, Connie Francis had this famous hairstyle.
Another super famous hairstyle was the magnificent Poodle Cut, the poodle cut got its name because
women would perm their hair with tight curls to enhance the curly hair after the dog breed poodle .
Many famous women had this hair cut, such as Lucille Ball, from the popular tv show, I Love

How Did Gauss Contribute To Math
Carl Friedrich Gauss, from his youth, was destined to be a great mathematician. By the time Gauss
turned three, he had already taught himself to read and write. Additionally, Gauss often told
acquaintances and friends that before he learned to speak, he learned to make mental calculations.
Throughout his lifetime, Gauss made discoveries which would benefit many fields within
mathematics. Gauss contributed greatly to the fields of arithmetic, statistics, geometry, algebra, and
astronomy. The origin of this famed mathematician began in Brunswick, Germany on April 30th in the
year of 1777. Gauss had humble beginnings, and lived in a small house with his parents. Gauss s
parents were both peasant laborers, which was expressed by the local dialect they spoke (West 15 16).
Gauss s father, Gebhard Dietrich Gauss, worked in various areas; he worked as a brick layer, gardener,
canal tender, street butcher, and accountant for funeral society (West 16). Gauss s mother, when she
was Dorothea Benze, worked for seven years as a maid before she married Gebhard. Gauss was
Dorothea s only child, but he had a half brother, Johann George Heinrich, who was the son of Gauss s
father from an earlier marriage (West 16). Gauss was an intelligent child, and at the age of three, he

The Farmer s Daughter is 1947 American films of romantic political comedy genres. The story is

A Brief Note On Hansen Mechanical Contractors ( Hmc )
Hansen Mechanical Contractors (HMC) is a large construction company who has changed the way
sick time and personal time off (PTO) is paid and taken. In past years (up until 2013) sick time was
only able to be taken in the calendar year and if not taken would be lost. Each employee was given
seven sick days per year. Sick time could not be rolled over or cashed out at the end of the year. HMC
decided starting January 1, 2014 that they would change this policy in hopes of giving their employees
an incentive to not use sick time and take less days off per year. Sick time was changed to PTO time
and they were given seven PTO days per year. The change to PTO time gave the employees the
incentive to not use their PTO time and to instead be paid 50 cents on the dollar for time not used at
the end of the year. This business situation should be addressed to see the impact that this change has
had on the company and to see if the company s goals with the new policy are being achieved.
Part B1: Summary of Data
The data collected to do this analysis is the employee s attendance records by year (2013, 2014, 2015)
from the imaging system. The attendance records are a record of how much sick and PTO time was
taken for the entire year. The amount of time taken is then entered into a table by employee. There are
33 employees who will be entered into the table by year. The accounting system also holds this data
which I used to double check the numbers against the attendance

The Causes Of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a big problem in the United States today. Domestic violence is anything from
sibling abuse to elder abuse. Domestic violence has many names. Spouse abuse talks about abuse from
a husband/wife or a boyfriend/girlfriend. Domestic violence is not just physical, but is behavior that is
intended to control another person through the use of verbal assaults.
One big cause of domestic violence is stress. Things such as being unemployed, drugs, alcohol, or
little money can cause a person a lot of stress. Also, it can sometimes be due to the abuser being
abused themselves in their childhood. Statistics show that many people who are abused in their
childhood become abusers themselves.
When domestic violence occurs there are many types of abuse that can happen. The first kind is
physical violence. Physical violence includes anything that is intended to physically injure the person.
The second type of abuse is emotional abuse which is consistently doing or saying things to
emotionally harm another person.
The third kind is sexual abuse. Just because someone is married to someone doesn t mean that they
have to have sex with them. Even though these are different kinds of abuse, all of them are harming in
their own ways.
People who have been abused think that there is no way out. They continue to put up with the abuse
and eventually learn to deal with it. Also due to the history of domestic violence, it is still seen as
acceptable in some ways and not a large threat

The Most Convincing Justification for Private Property
The most convincing justification for private property provided by Ziff is that of economic efficiency.
Private property incentivises innovation, lowers the cost of dealing with externalities, and with
moderation, reduces the susceptibility of property to the tragedy of the commons. Economic efficiency
holds particular weight because of the significant amount of today s societies that rely on a market
based system to conduct business, trade and commerce. This system lists private property as one of its
founding tenets and therefore heightens the justification s persuasiveness. It is not suggested that a
fully privatised property regime would be ideal either, but a mixture of both private property and
communal property is seen as the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To the contrary Ziff argues that the cost of policing would also be more expensive under a private
property regime as the creation of boundaries would add costs that would not have otherwise have
existed. Conversely Grafton suggests that the cost of boundary erection is merely temporary, as after
the initial set up of boundaries, cost of negotiations and policing are comparatively reduced.
Communal property rights contrast this; as they hold long term economic costs to the interest owners
as negotiation costs will continue to increase exponentially, as policing costs are not one off, and
negotiation costs are comparatively higher . It is therefore evident that private property provides the
most economically efficient method of dealing with externalities in the short run and the long run, as
costs and reaction time are rapidly reduced.
Ziff also argues that the over distribution of private property may result in myopic view of
externalities, as each land owner would only care for their own property and not about the needs of the
wider community affected by externalities created by their land. This short term view, is an inherent
downfall of private property, but society has developed means and ways in which these costs can be
met, for example through regulatory authorities, and it is therefore argued that a fully privatise
property regime would not be preferable but a partly common and partly private alternative, as

Preparing For Senior Night, My Last Home Volleyball Game
Preparing for senior night, my last home volleyball game, I found myself sorting through pictures of
my high school years and noticed a recurring theme: a bittersweet memory, my walking boot. As silly
as it may sound, I have derived much of my identity from this boot. When I meet new classmates, they
ask about the status of my injury. How is your foot? Can you play volleyball again? I cannot blame
them for noticing my bum ankle. For more than a year (on and off), a bulky, grey piece of plastic
masked the lower half of my leg. For a part of this time, I even rode through the hallways on a rented
medical scooter that my friends affectionately dubbed Ricky Bobby. This boot, the thing that once
caused me anxiety is now a symbol of my determination. Additionally, it opened my eyes to the field I
want to spend the next chapter of my life pursuing: physical therapy. The summer before my junior
year, I worked harder than I ever had to train for my first varsity season. Immediately after an intense
run, I would go home and ice my ankle to relieve the pain that I ignored during the workout itself.
Push through; I would tell myself, be strong! I thought that I was being strong by working through the
pain. Sports media always praises the athletes who played the championship game on a broken foot or
a sprained ankle, but you never hear about the kid who trains through the everlasting two a days of
preseason and never makes it to the first game. I thought that by pushing

The Revolution in 1917 was caused by many economic factors . These included rapid

Anasazi Disappearance
The History and the Disappearance of the Anasazi Introduction: My topic is the history and the
disappearance of the Anasazi. I chose this topic because I am from Colorado and we visited Mesa
Verde on school trips. I find the Anasazi culture interesting and doing research on them seemed like it
would be enjoyable.
` The Anasazi populated the four corners area of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. They
became independent somewhere between 200 and 500 A.D. and disappeared 1100 years later leaving
behind many remains. There are many theories about what could have happened to the Anasazi but the
speculation with the strongest evidence is that they scattered due to drought and decreased resources.
Despite their disappearance, the Anasazi ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The article Riddles of the Anasazi states Using data from tree rings, researchers know that a terrible
drought seized the Southwest from 1276 to 1299; it is possible that in certain areas there was virtually
no rain at all during those 23 years. No rain for 23 years would be a justified reason for them to find
other places to live. The Anasazi also chopped down many trees for beams and firewood which lead to
deforestation. There is also evidence of an even longer drought from the years 1130 to 1180 which
shows that they were strong enough to withstand droughts before. It doesn t make sense for them to
last through a 50 year drought then leave because of a 23 year drought therefore it is still a mystery
what caused them to leave. The evidence isn t strong enough to know if this is why they left for
certain but there is more evidence that supports this is than any other reason for their

How Do Romeo And Juliet Make Hasty Decisions
Love is an overpowering force that dominates and influences the thoughts and actions of many
individuals. Some make good decisions, while others make poor decisions due to love. These choices
are made because of several types of love: romantic love, platonic love, and familial love. William
Shakespeare s Romeo Juliet showcases all the categories of love. In the play, many characters make
hasty decisions as they are caught in the storm of Romeo and Juliet s love lives. The love that they
hold for each other is also symbolized by meaningful objects in their lives.
The throes of love are portrayed between many characters in the play. The most dominant form of love
is the affection that Romeo and Juliet hold for each other. Romeo s infatuations

Harrison Bergeron And Ray Bradbury s Marionettes
Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron and Ray Bradbury s Marionettes, inc. both show that although
advances in technology can be used for good, it always ends up doing more harm than good.
Marionettes, inc. is about a guy who keeps a clone of himself in his toolbox, only to have his clone
retaliate by locking him in the toolbox at the end of the story. Harrison Bergeron talks about a future
where everyone is equal in every possible which way. Although both stories showcase that technology
ultimately does more harm than good; one talks about everyone being equal, and the other shows what
happens when advanced technology is mistreated.

Harrison Bergeron theorizes on what world where everyone is kept equal via mental handicaps and

The Rights Opportunity Commission Has Filed Suits Against...
Living in the 21t century, diversity is seen all aspects of life, majorly in the workplace. A rising issue
in America has been making headlines; discrimination in the workplace due to sexual orientation.
Sexual orientation refers to a person s sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are
attracted (Google). There has been a disturbing and substantial growing rate in the discrimination and
harassment of gay and transgender individuals in the workplace as well as throughout the hiring
process with limited attention being brought upon the issue. Individuals are being denied the same
benefits, opportunities, and job titles due to their sexual orientation. Although there are state and
federal laws that protect against employee discrimination based on sexual orientation, cases are still
being taken due to controversy over state and federal laws in private and public practices. The U.S
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed suits against privately owned companies
including, Scott Medical Center and IFCO system of the Pallet Company, in an attempt to pose an end
to these discriminatory practice. There are controversial cases that take the contrary of anti gay
actions, which involve pro gay discrimination. LGBT employees are one of the largest groups of
minorities in the workplace who face the largest amount of discrimination.

The Context And Theory Of Corporate Governance
01 The context and theory of corporate governance 1.1 The meaning and purpose of corporate
governance Corporate governance broadly refers to the mechanisms, processes and relations by which
corporations are controlled and directed. Corporate governance has also been more narrowly defined
as a system of law and sound approaches by which corporations are directed and controlled focusing
on the internal and external corporate structures with the intention of monitoring the actions of
management and directors and thereby, mitigating agency risks which may stem from the misdeeds of
corporate officers. Governance structures and principles identify the distribution of rights and

1.3 The development of corporate governance and corporate governance theory Corporate governance
is a relatively new area and its development has been affected by theories from a number of
disciplines, including finance, economics, accounting, law, management, and organisational behavior.
Agency theory has probably affected the development of the corporate governance framework the
most. Agency theory identifies the agency relationship where one party, the principal, delegates work
to another party, the agent. In the context of a corporation, the owners are the principal and the
directors are the agent. In addition, there are other theories that have affected the development of
corporate governance, which include: transaction costs economics, stakeholder theory, and
stewardship theory. The development of corporate governance is a global occurrence and, as such, is a
complex area including legal, cultural, ownership, and other structural differences. Therefore, some
theories may be more appropriate and relevant to some countries than others. 1.4 Theories of
corporate governance There are a range of theories in corporate governance, such theories address the
cause and effect of variables.  Agency Identifies the agency relationship where one party, the

Animal Welfare And Relative Welfare

Scientific Journal Report #2

Introduction
Much can be said about animal welfare, many aspects are relatively new. New topics and avenues of
potential research are constantly surfacing. For starters, one idea I m going to attempt to tackle is an
ethical one. Subjective at best in my opinion, it usually doesn t warrant serious scientific research. The
topics I m suggesting are organic welfare and relative welfare. I m talking about the range of emotions
animals have and how they can be interpreted to best adapt an animal s environment to maximize their
welfare. Several institutions would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A consumer could be more inclined to purchase/use a product if they can believe that their product
lived a full and happy life. The same criteria can be said for a prospective pet, an owner would want
an all around healthy companion that can display a full range of emotion during the course of its life.
Welfare can certainly be relative when you take into account the definition in context. I m going to
pose an argument that for instance an organically raised, grass fed cow can claim a higher quality
welfare than a stock cow; one that has been raised in a warehouse, outside of a natural frame of
reference (conditions the animal could exist in with minimal human intervention). I ll even go so far
as to say the physical presence of the sun may be a vital component in welfare. It has been
documented that lack of sun exposure can lead to vitamin D, and calcium deficiency, various diseases
because of that and even depression.[5] The definition of welfare can be measured by the
accumulation of positive and negative experiences. Objectively weighing the satisfaction of every
need (and possibly want) of the animal in question versus; illnesses, pain, abnormal behavior, and
chronic stress, etc. Through these objective measures, an animal s level of wellbeing can be properly
gauged. [3] This makes it fairly easy to measure welfare since each of these events or categories

Adaptations of Black Panthers
Black Panthers are beautiful, intelligent and agile creatures. I chose this species because I love the

Black Panthers are extremely territorial, aggressive and patrol a rather large region of habitat. They

Parenthood Should Have More Government Restrictions
Defunding Planned Parenthood
Although my view is consistent with a capitalistic micro government, Planned Parenthood should
have more government restrictions. Most people would beg to differ for several reasons. This issue
has a two sided debate and there is no wrong or right answer. The only way to come down to a fair
conclusion is by making a pros and cons list, so one can see each side instead of being close minded.
Planned Parenthood has been controversial due to the services it provides to women and teens in the
United States, however the government enforce restrictions in order to prevent corruption. Planned

Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut and Catch 22 by Joseph Heller both have a striking
resemblance in the themes of anti war and of free will. Both don t come into full force right in the
beginning but eventually become more evident. Both novels focus on one character throughout the
entire novel, and each protagonist is affected by all the events around them. It changes their
perspective and how they view life as a whole. Both Billy in Slaughterhouse Five and Yossarian in

The idea of war and that only good and peace can come from it, is painted by Vonnegut and Heller and
highlighted by their utilization of irony. Their careful stabs of irony in their novels help to prove one
of their numerous shared themes and help the anti war theme specifically. The institutions and
organizations created by war are bizarre and appear to be created in order to make profit. Many
comparisons can be made between M M Enterprises in Catch 22, and the group of English men in the
Nazi war camp in Slaughterhouse five. Both protagonists have ironic experiences with the group that
exists within their particular universe. In Yossarian s frantic attempt to help the dying Snowden, he
opens the first aid kit and finds that The twelve syrettes of morphine had been stolen from their case
and replaced by a cleanly lettered note that said: What s good for M M Enterprises is good for the
country (Heller 446). The irony in this is blatantly obvious, Snowden is not benefiting from M M s
repossession of the morphine; in fact, he will suffer to a much greater degree because of it. Obviously,
the M M Enterprise is not meant to be thought as a true wartime corporation. Perhaps, Heller intended
M M Enterprises to symbolize the ridiculous quality of wartime enterprises for profit. His statement is
clear. The statement that Heller is trying to explain to us is that any company that

The fact that her baby was conceived by a means of rape or incest would haunt her for the rest of her

have to see the man who impregnated her, almost, on a daily basis, at least until she s old enough to

Essay On The Sandman
The Sandman, A Hand crafted Nightmare A bedtime story is meant to guide children into a peaceful
sleep. That, however, is not the case when one talks about Paul Berry s The Sandman. According to a
friend of his, the late internationally respected animator Paul Berry started his career in his home
country the United Kingdom. There, he had worked on The Wind in The Willows and The Fool of the
World, done solely in stop motion. His Oscar nominated short The Sandman placed his name onto the
global stage and led him to many opportunities oversea, including a position in Nightmare Before
Christmas production team. Since its release in 1992, The Sandman had become the recipient and
winner of many film awards around the world (Purves). With its story based on E.T.A. Hoffmenn s
novella Der Sandmann (Willig), the magical nighttime fairy is not what viewers typically know him
for. A dark twist to a gentle bedtime story, combined with clever use of color and distinctive style,
turned The Sandman into a great piece of stop motion animation still known and enjoyed by animators
today. The Sandman, contrary to its name, is not your usual folklore. As film critic Caren Willig noted,

Professor
ENGL 102 B54 LUO
3 February 2014 The Lottery vs. The Rocking Horse Winner
In The Rocking Horse Winner, by D. H. Lawrence, and The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, the two
authors illustrate symbols and themes throughout their stories in which one common idea is present:
perhaps winning is not always positive. The Rocking Horse Winner, by D.H. Lawrence is a fictional
story about a woman s obsession for money and the lack of love and affection she shows to her family.
Her son Paul hopes to change his mother s mind set in order to gain her love by becoming lucky. Paul

Hester tells Paul that luck is what causes you to have money. If you re lucky you have money. That s
why it s better to be born lucky than rich. If you re rich you may lose money. But if you re lucky, you
will always have money. (236) This pushes Paul to desperately seek out luck so that his mother will be
grateful for her life and provide her family with the love and affection that they so rightfully deserve.
Paul believes his rocking horse is full of magical powers, which will help him achieve the luck he
needs to gain his mother s love. While Paul rides his rocking horse, the horse predicts the winning
horse and ends up making Paul an appalling amount of money. Paul gives his winnings to his mother
who squanders it on unnecessary materialistic things. He realizes that he must win more money to win
his mother s affections. He becomes mad and frantically searches for the next winner of the horse
races. On Paul s last ride to find the last winner of the horse race, he falls of the horse and eventually
dies.
Lawrence shows many points by applying these obvious symbols: the rocking horse and the
whispering house. The wooden rocking horse symbolizes the fantasy quest that Paul takes to attain
luck. This magical mysterious wooden horse also tells Paul who will win the horse races. The
whispering house symbolizes his mother s lust for money. The house constantly haunts Paul and his

Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window
Alfred Hitchcock s 1954 Rear Window is full of characterization, narratives and symbolism. The film
focuses around the main character of the story, Jefferies, who is a photographer but unfortunately
recently has to use a wheelchair and stay in an apartment because he broke his leg. Jeff has to spend
time alone, so he spends his time watching his neighbors through his camera. Due to the warmth of
summer most people had to open their window so now Jefferies can see what is happening in their
life. It s like he is watching multiple films at the same time. A free cinema for Jefferies. The view of
that window and Jefferies s apartment is all the viewers have.
We spent the whole time in the main protagonist s apartment. His apartment is in Greenwich Village,
New York City. The camera never leaves his apartment because Jeff can t leave his own apartment.
Which limits it to one room and the view out of his rear window. Alfred Hitchcock really wants to put
us in Jefferies s shoes, that s why the camera never leaves his apartment and we are bound to see
outside from his point of view. The camera man uses shots zooming, which make the film look more
realistic and makes it seem like we are viewing this through Jeff s perspective. As the camera moves
around some characters might go to the other side of their room which has no window. This shows ...

There is no flashbacks or flash forwards, and no playing with time as everything is straight forward.
As a viewer we spend every minute by Jefferies s side, seeing everything he s seeing and stuck in his

Those are some qualification for considering Rear Window a first person film although it doesn t
entirely fit the definition. The mood of this film can be considered both restless and suspenseful. It
seems like Hitchcock is punishing Jeff. Maybe he is being punished for his

Essay on Lost Sister by Cathy Songs
Lost Sister by Cathy Songs
Cathy Songs poem Lost Sister explores the lives of two generations of Chinese women. One
generation chooses to leave China and begin a new life in America. the other chose to remain in China
and experience her culture the way it was meant to be. This is a comparison of the two generations of
women and how they are linked by culture and seperated by lifestyle.
In China, women were put in subservient positions to society. They were quiet, obedient creatures who
gathered patience . Song speaks of how women learned to provide for their families, as they were
learning to stretch the family rice . Women were expected to serve a purpose and be seen and not
heard.
The following generation chose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chinese women who chose to remain in China traded freedom for their culture. They were afraid to
leave the familiarity of their lives thee for an uncertain future in America Had they gone to America,
they would have lost the opportunity to experience Chinese culture firsthand. They lose the freedom
that the next generation would have and gained the experience of living in their native culture ane
accepting it as a way of life. These women were admirable because of their strength to choose their
culture and family over anything else. Their dedication is at a level close to monks and saints. They
were able to find harmony in their lives because it was all they ever knew.
The women who chose to go to America led a very different life. They were able to be free of Chinese
expectations of women. they did not have to learn to walk in shoes the size of teacups, without
breaking . Song indicates that In America, there are many roads and women can stride along with men
. These women were able to experience life as people who were equal to men in society s eyes. If they
had stayed in China they never would have had the chance to experience something other then their
native culture. Song emphasizes the life of these women in America to point this out. She describes
the sad loss of culture in America, the meager provisions and sentiments of once belonging and the
possibilites, the loneliness, can strangulate

Native Americans During The 19th Century
For hundreds of years Native Americans inhabited North America. When Europeans came to the New
World they did not understand these indigenous people. For a long time these natives were seen as
savages who had backwards traditions. After the American Revolution, Americans were pushing to try
to expand their territory. They wanted to expand westward towards the Pacific Ocean, to get closer to
China. Native Americans we victims of changing times in America. With Europeans and then
Americans aggressively pushing west the Natives could not keep up with technologies of the whites,
they were also a victim to the white mans epidemics, horse and the environment. All of these factors
caused the natives to be victims of westward expansion in America. Native Americans play a large
role in Western history of the United States but the power struggle that they faced with white people
forever changed their destiny. One agent of change that led the natives to be victims was disease. In
the early 16th century, the natives did not have any of the immunities that the Europeans developed
over the course of the last 5000 10,000 years. Disease hit the natives like a brick wall. Smallpox was
the most contagious disease of all that hit tribes like the ones in the plains and Missouri Valley. This
disease spread through the region from the northern plains to the Red River in the 1770s. Others that
tore through the native populations were Measles, cholera, malaria, and venereal diseases. These

A. E Housman s To An Athlete Dying Young
The poem To an Athlete Dying Young is about, as you can guess, the passing of a young athlete. A.E
Housman, the author, starts the poem off with remembering when the athlete had a huge victory at a
town race and how all the people of the town were applauding him. Not too long after we find out that
the athlete has passed. When this poem was published South Africa was fighting in the second Boer
war. A.E Housman was very big on soldiers being prepared before going to war. Unfortunately during
the second Boer war they weren t. It had been said that the solider weren t physically or mentally
prepared for the war. Throughout this poem you can see how he reflected his feeling about the Boer
war. All through the poem A.E Housman uses several different literary devices such as imagery,
rhyme, and mood to help the reader comprehend the poem better and have visual images of what s
going on in their head. A.E Housman main theme that I interpreted was that greatness does not last
long. All through this poem Housman shows great forms of imagery in it. You first see it in lines five
through eight when he says ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poem uses a steady rhyme scheme of AABB. By using this type of rhyme scheme it helps the
poem flow much better and for some people it s easier to read. The rhyming helps the words come
together and helps keep the poem in harmony. The way the rhyme scheme ties in with the mood of the
poem is that it lets the reader know what is coming next. From the title we knew that the athlete was
going to die, however with the rhyming in this poem we can kind of see how it happens and how
everyone is affected by it. Overall the rhyming used in this poem helps form the imagery in the poem
and flow better. I feel that if Housman didn t use the rhyme scheme he did that it wouldn t make much
sense. This one fit perfectly for this poem because of the emphasis it has on certain

Equipment Depreciation
Purchasing equipment is one of the biggest expenses that small businesses and start ups face. The IRS
allows you deduct most or all of these expenses. This in turn helps you recoup the cost associated with
running your business. Moreover, by taking this deduction when you prepare your tax return, it lowers
your overall tax bill. In some cases, especially for small businesses, the deductions could result in a
refund.
There are different ways to expense business equipment when filing taxes, which can often lead to
confusion. If you re unsure how the deductions will affect your business, hiring a tax accountant is a
good idea. Mistakes or miscalculations when filing your tax return could trigger an IRS audit. A
professional can lessen the stress and time constraints during the tax preparation season.

For instance, furniture, office equipment, vehicles, computers, business software, and machinery
would all fall under equipment depreciation. These tangible items for your business are considered
capital assets since they are used to make a profit.
Understanding Section 179 Deduction
Under Section 179, the IRS allows you to deduct the full price of the equipment you purchased or
leased during the year. By taking this deduction, you are essentially deducting the full cost of the
equipment from your company s gross income.
Your company must have a taxable income before you can use the 179 deduction. Additionally, there
is a cap on the deduction set at $500,000 that you can claim. There is also a maximum of $2,010,000
for business equipment expenses during the year that Section 179 is claimed. Most small business will
not spend this amount on equipment during the early years of being in business, which is why this
deduction is so valuable.

Critical Analysis of China s Economy
Abstract
The economy of China has been on the rise at a rapid rate for more than three decades. Most of this
growth higher productivity of labor highly contributed to this economic growth. On the contrary, as
the economy widens, rate of employment diminishes along with a steady increase of the youth
population. This paper focuses on understanding the efforts that led to the growth as well as the
setbacks that China might encounter over the coming years. The challenge would be to maintain its
rapid leap of economic growth. Key questions consist ofhow China will sustain its investments;
whether these investments will lose productivity as the labor capital ratio keeps on rising, whether
employment rates will sustain urban migration. In the bottom line scenario, growth of the economy
falls steadilyat a rate of six and a half percent by the year 2030 from the current ten percent (Chowand
Kui Wai 146).
History of China s Economic Presentation
China led the global technological and fields in the industrialization era . It is believed that China s
economy made its peak in the Song Dynasty. In this era, China had the supreme technologies
(Needham and Ronan 143), the utmost rate of urbanization, the largest iron production and ultimately
the leadingstate economy globally (Carsten 146). However, between 1500 and 1800, Western Europe
took the lead from China. Some economists and historians attach China s downfall

Since its foundation in 2003, Tesla Motors has recorded most noticeable breakthroughs in the market of electric vehicles by their own developed power train technology. The technology was founded by group of engineers in Silicon Valley who wanted to prove that electronic cars could outperform the gasoline powered cars. With instant torque, incredible power, and zero emissions, Tesla s products would be cars without compromise. Sofaer s chapter The Body as an Archeological Resource it was found that individuals are characterized by cultural identities. Sofaer claims that the body is the major archeological source with cultural characteristics. However The Body as an Archeological Resource , seemed to be more focused on the archeological aspects of how bodies are understood and analyzed in archeology for the bigger picture. Archaeology s Humanism and the Materiality of the Body was more a philosophical debate about how people perceive archeology and seemed to be very negative and cynical. The second reading tied more into the overall significance of the class as it highlights how people are understood in the global and overall context. The first reading, which began by emphasizing that cultural identifiers should be removed when analyzing humans, did not make sense to me. Our personalities are shaped by who we are in society and how we have made a change. If the cultural associations were removed from Alexander the Great, he would no longer be known as the great divine ruler. Furthermore, the Holocausts was not just caused by a man who wanted power, rather a man who did not like a specific culture caused it. I personally disagree with Osteoarchaeologists, as different social barriers created history and the overall importance of archeology is to understand history and past cultures. Famine, Affluence, And Morality By Peter Singer In his essay Famine, Affluence, and Morality moral philosopher Peter Singer (2013) argues that affluent individuals morally ought to provide an assistance to absolutely poor people up to the point when further giving requires them to sacrifice anything of comparable moral significance. He relies on the example with drowning child when proving that we should accept his strong principle which is if it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). However, it can still be an important issue for practical ethicist to consider if people will actually stick to his principle after they accept that it is morally right. Singer must have understood that many people will probably find the his strong principle too demanding or counter intuitive and will not follow it. To solve this problem he has worked out the moderate version of the principle which is if it is in our power to prevent something very bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything morally significant, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). This principle is more plausible for human nature as it leaves some space for individual s personal interests. It is less ambitious and does not promote absolute equality of welfare and resources. Singer himself agreed that in order to do the maximum to reduce absolute poverty, we should advocate a standard lower (Singer 1993, 245). However, I think that the weak principle Singer proposes is a bit shaky because anything morally significant is determined by subjective judgment and can indeed be morally incorrect sometimes. • 6. Cause And Effect Of Tambora This year marks the 202nd anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tambora. Many have never heard of this explosion, but Tambora had massive historical effects. Let s explore what this explosion was and how it impacted culture in the 1800 s. Mount Tambora erupted on the Island of Sumbawa on April 5th in 1815. It was recorded as the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history (Britannica). The effect of this massive eruption traveled far beyond the small Indonesian island. It impacted multiple and incredibly diverse aspects of society across Asia, Europe and North America. It affected art, literature, transportation, climate, economies, health, opium production and even American religion. The volcano had been dormant for hundreds of years and this violent explosion lasted days, sending ash into the atmosphere (D arcy Wood). At the time, there were both native villagers living in the area and British officers, as the area was a colony under the British crown. Most of the surviving records of the explosion come from these British officers, some of whom didn t actually witness the explosion but heard it and assumed the explosion was from rebels on the island. A captain of a nearby East India Company ship reported ash falling out of the sky and By noon, the light that had remained in the eastern part of the horizon disappeared, and complete darkness had covered the face of day (D arcy Wood). At the time of the explosion another British subject, Sir Thomas Raffles, was the governor of Java, Indonesia. His compiled record of first hand accounts confirming the blackened sky and falling ash (Skulls). Similar accounts of darkness were recorded throughout the region, which was due to the sheer volume of ash that was released by the volcano. The ash blackened sky was not the only impact of the eruption. The more far reaching effects of the eruption would not be felt until the summer of 1816, when the eruption gasses and particles so affected worldwide meteorological patterns that the western world called 1816 The Year Without a Summer . It is hard to imagine that the eruption of distant Mount Tambora inspired and influenced the work of many artists and yet is was clearly evident in art and literature across the ... • 8. Disappointment In Madame Bovary One of the most common emotions humans have is disappointment, or the feeling of dissatisfaction and emptiness. Most often, this feeling comes through the loss of love. For example, breaking up with your partner can leave you feeling defeated and lonely. Once this happens, one usually attempts to move on and forget about that person, sometimes in the way of finding someone to fill their void in their empty heart. In Gustave Flaubert s master novel Madame Bovary, there are multiple encounters with dissatisfaction that creates the theme of disappointment. The two main characters that Flaubert uses to show dissatisfaction through are Emma Bovary, also known as Madame Bovary, and Charles Bovary. Emma Bovary seems to be faced with empty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This also shows the conflict of how Flaubert never allows Emma to be in a grasping distance of her desired satisfaction. She is continually always so close to her longing desire, but can never quite grab it. The reader gets one of the first glimpses at her disappointment several weeks after the Vaubyessard Ball, still dreaming about the magical night she had. From the beginning of July she counted on her fingers how many weeks remained before October, thinking that the Marquis d Andervilliers would perhaps give another ball at Vaubyessard. But September passed by without one letter or visit. After the distress of this disappointment, her heart once more remained empty (79). That night at the ball gave Emma a feeling like no other of how love should feel and look like. It seems like from that point on, she has a concrete idea of what love is. With the ball still humming in her ears, she was trying to stay awake in order to prolong the illusion of this luxurious life (79). This longing to back to such an illusion shows that Emma is continually being pulled away from Charles and toward something she can t attain. She continues to drift away from Charles a greater amount once she begins her affair with Rodolphe. All was going well with Rodolphe until, of course, Emma lost interest, along with Rodolphe losing his love for her and only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By the time Gauss turned three, he had already taught himself to read and write. Additionally, Gauss often told acquaintances and friends that before he learned to speak, he learned to make mental calculations. Throughout his lifetime, Gauss made discoveries which would benefit many fields within mathematics. Gauss contributed greatly to the fields of arithmetic, statistics, geometry, algebra, and astronomy. The origin of this famed mathematician began in Brunswick, Germany on April 30th in the year of 1777. Gauss had humble beginnings, and lived in a small house with his parents. Gauss s parents were both peasant laborers, which was expressed by the local dialect they spoke (West 15 16). Gauss s father, Gebhard Dietrich Gauss, worked in various areas; he worked as a brick layer, gardener, canal tender, street butcher, and accountant for funeral society (West 16). Gauss s mother, when she was Dorothea Benze, worked for seven years as a maid before she married Gebhard. • 15. A Brief Note On Hansen Mechanical Contractors ( Hmc ) Hansen Mechanical Contractors (HMC) is a large construction company who has changed the way sick time and personal time off (PTO) is paid and taken. In past years (up until 2013) sick time was only able to be taken in the calendar year and if not taken would be lost. Each employee was given seven sick days per year. Sick time could not be rolled over or cashed out at the end of the year. HMC decided starting January 1, 2014 that they would change this policy in hopes of giving their employees an incentive to not use sick time and take less days off per year. Sick time was changed to PTO time and they were given seven PTO days per year. The change to PTO time gave the employees the incentive to not use their PTO time and to instead be paid 50 cents on the dollar for time not used at the end of the year. This business situation should be addressed to see the impact that this change has had on the company and to see if the company s goals with the new policy are being achieved. Part B1: Summary of Data The data collected to do this analysis is the employee s attendance records by year (2013, 2014, 2015) from the imaging system. The attendance records are a record of how much sick and PTO time was taken for the entire year. The amount of time taken is then entered into a table by employee. • 16. The Causes Of Domestic Violence Domestic violence is a big problem in the United States today. Domestic violence is anything from sibling abuse to elder abuse. Domestic violence has many names. Spouse abuse talks about abuse from a husband/wife or a boyfriend/girlfriend. Domestic violence is not just physical, but is behavior that is intended to control another person through the use of verbal assaults. One big cause of domestic violence is stress. Things such as being unemployed, drugs, alcohol, or little money can cause a person a lot of stress. Also, it can sometimes be due to the abuser being abused themselves in their childhood. Statistics show that many people who are abused in their childhood become abusers themselves. When domestic violence occurs there are many types of abuse that can happen. The first kind is physical violence. Physical violence includes anything that is intended to physically injure the person. The second type of abuse is emotional abuse which is consistently doing or saying things to emotionally harm another person. The third kind is sexual abuse. Just because someone is married to someone doesn t mean that they have to have sex with them. Even though these are different kinds of abuse, all of them are harming in their own ways. People who have been abused think that there is no way out. They continue to put up with the abuse and eventually learn to deal with it. Also due to the history of domestic violence, it is still seen as acceptable in some ways and not a large threat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The Most Convincing Justification for Private Property The most convincing justification for private property provided by Ziff is that of economic efficiency. Private property incentivises innovation, lowers the cost of dealing with externalities, and with moderation, reduces the susceptibility of property to the tragedy of the commons. Economic efficiency holds particular weight because of the significant amount of today s societies that rely on a market based system to conduct business, trade and commerce. This system lists private property as one of its founding tenets and therefore heightens the justification s persuasiveness. It is not suggested that a fully privatised property regime would be ideal either, but a mixture of both private property and communal property is seen as the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To the contrary Ziff argues that the cost of policing would also be more expensive under a private property regime as the creation of boundaries would add costs that would not have otherwise have existed. Conversely Grafton suggests that the cost of boundary erection is merely temporary, as after the initial set up of boundaries, cost of negotiations and policing are comparatively reduced. Communal property rights contrast this; as they hold long term economic costs to the interest owners as negotiation costs will continue to increase exponentially, as policing costs are not one off, and negotiation costs are comparatively higher . It is therefore evident that private property provides the most economically efficient method of dealing with externalities in the short run and the long run, as costs and reaction time are rapidly reduced. Ziff also argues that the over distribution of private property may result in myopic view of externalities, as each land owner would only care for their own property and not about the needs of the wider community affected by externalities created by their land. This short term view, is an inherent downfall of private property, but society has developed means and ways in which these costs can be met, for example through regulatory authorities, and it is therefore argued that a fully privatise property regime would not be preferable but a partly common and partly private alternative, as ... • 19. Preparing For Senior Night, My Last Home Volleyball Game Preparing for senior night, my last home volleyball game, I found myself sorting through pictures of my high school years and noticed a recurring theme: a bittersweet memory, my walking boot. As silly as it may sound, I have derived much of my identity from this boot. When I meet new classmates, they ask about the status of my injury. How is your foot? Can you play volleyball again? I cannot blame them for noticing my bum ankle. For more than a year (on and off), a bulky, grey piece of plastic masked the lower half of my leg. For a part of this time, I even rode through the hallways on a rented medical scooter that my friends affectionately dubbed Ricky Bobby. This boot, the thing that once caused me anxiety is now a symbol of my determination. Additionally, it opened my eyes to the field I want to spend the next chapter of my life pursuing: physical therapy. The summer before my junior year, I worked harder than I ever had to train for my first varsity season. Immediately after an intense run, I would go home and ice my ankle to relieve the pain that I ignored during the workout itself. Push through; I would tell myself, be strong! I thought that I was being strong by working through the pain. Sports media always praises the athletes who played the championship game on a broken foot or a sprained ankle, but you never hear about the kid who trains through the everlasting two a days of preseason and never makes it to the first game. I thought that by pushing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I chose this topic because I am from Colorado and we visited Mesa Verde on school trips. I find the Anasazi culture interesting and doing research on them seemed like it would be enjoyable. ` The Anasazi populated the four corners area of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. They became independent somewhere between 200 and 500 A.D. and disappeared 1100 years later leaving behind many remains. There is also evidence of an even longer drought from the years 1130 to 1180 which shows that they were strong enough to withstand droughts before. It doesn t make sense for them to last through a 50 year drought then leave because of a 23 year drought therefore it is still a mystery what caused them to leave. The same criteria can be said for a prospective pet, an owner would want an all around healthy companion that can display a full range of emotion during the course of its life. Welfare can certainly be relative when you take into account the definition in context. I m going to pose an argument that for instance an organically raised, grass fed cow can claim a higher quality welfare than a stock cow; one that has been raised in a warehouse, outside of a natural frame of reference (conditions the animal could exist in with minimal human intervention). I ll even go so far as to say the physical presence of the sun may be a vital component in welfare. It has been documented that lack of sun exposure can lead to vitamin D, and calcium deficiency, various diseases because of that and even depression.[5] The definition of welfare can be measured by the accumulation of positive and negative experiences. Objectively weighing the satisfaction of every need (and possibly want) of the animal in question versus; illnesses, pain, abnormal behavior, and chronic stress, etc. Through these objective measures, an animal s level of wellbeing can be properly gauged. That s why it s better to be born lucky than rich. If you re rich you may lose money. But if you re lucky, you will always have money. (236) This pushes Paul to desperately seek out luck so that his mother will be grateful for her life and provide her family with the love and affection that they so rightfully deserve. Paul believes his rocking horse is full of magical powers, which will help him achieve the luck he needs to gain his mother s love. While Paul rides his rocking horse, the horse predicts the winning horse and ends up making Paul an appalling amount of money. Paul gives his winnings to his mother who squanders it on unnecessary materialistic things. He realizes that he must win more money to win his mother s affections. He becomes mad and frantically searches for the next winner of the horse races. On Paul s last ride to find the last winner of the horse race, he falls of the horse and eventually dies. Lawrence shows many points by applying these obvious symbols: the rocking horse and the whispering house. The wooden rocking horse symbolizes the fantasy quest that Paul takes to attain luck. This magical mysterious wooden horse also tells Paul who will win the horse races. The whispering house symbolizes his mother s lust for money. The film focuses around the main character of the story, Jefferies, who is a photographer but unfortunately recently has to use a wheelchair and stay in an apartment because he broke his leg. Jeff has to spend time alone, so he spends his time watching his neighbors through his camera. Due to the warmth of summer most people had to open their window so now Jefferies can see what is happening in their life. It s like he is watching multiple films at the same time. A free cinema for Jefferies. The view of that window and Jefferies s apartment is all the viewers have. We spent the whole time in the main protagonist s apartment. His apartment is in Greenwich Village, New York City. The camera never leaves his apartment because Jeff can t leave his own apartment. Which limits it to one room and the view out of his rear window. Alfred Hitchcock really wants to put us in Jefferies s shoes, that s why the camera never leaves his apartment and we are bound to see outside from his point of view. The camera man uses shots zooming, which make the film look more realistic and makes it seem like we are viewing this through Jeff s perspective.
