Dbq Jury System
There are certain aspects of the United States government that seem to be at the core of ensuring
democracy for all citizens. These ideas include representative leaders like the President, or the
bicameral legislature. Similarly, the jury system is another structure of the government that many
people hold close to their hearts. Although it seems like the ultimate way that the citizens can self
govern, is the jury system really the best way to reach a verdict in civil and/or criminal cases? The
bottom line is that the jury system is an outdated structure. Specifically, bench trials, or trials decided
only by a judge, are much more effective than jury trials because judges are more educated, less
susceptible to popular influence, and are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In trials like that of Casey Anthony, the mother arrested and charged with killing her two year old
daughter Caylee, the popularity and widespread coverage of the case definitely influenced how
citizens across the country believed Anthony should be sentenced (Document D). Anyone who saw
one news story on the case that was then called to the jury probably already had formed their opinion
on the status of Anthony s innocence, without reviewing any court evidence. Consequently, their
predisposed opinion, similar to the cats on the jury in Cartoon 3 of Document E, could have resulted
in a weighted outcome. Also, the fear of a wrong decision made by the jury could have motivated a
juror to vote solely for the outcome most popularly desirable. For example, Document D quotes Janine
Gonzalez, a nearby member of Anthony s community, as saying She (Casey Anthony) better move and
move to a faraway place. Even though, in the end, Anthony was declared innocent, the fear of her life
as well as the possible violence that could occur after the verdict could have been enough to sway a
juror to convict her just to satisfy a popular

Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin Essay
Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin
We have all seen it done before, either in real life or in the movies. A situation is funny because of the
misinterpretation of someone s actions or the complete conflict of what a situation seems to be and
what it really is. People come into contact with sight gags all the time. One might be trying to be
sneaky and hide something and then when someone looks, one pretends to be doing something else
not to get caught. One could also pantomime using an umbrella as a baseball bat. These are both basic
forms of sight gags.
Sight gags are an essential part of comedy, especially the silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin s time. A
sight gag is a visual form of comedy. In this form of comedy, the actors rely on ... Show more content

The accuser, however, had not seen that Chaplin had put the money in her pocket in the first place.
This misunderstanding makes the scene funny when the man tells the woman to check her pockets and
she is overjoyed to find money.
The second sight gag discussed is the mimed metaphor, which is when an actor uses pantomime as a
gag. For this, the actor uses an object that is very recognizable and pantomimes something that is not
its proper use. This is a kind of visual simile, and is generally used in silent films more than sound
films. The mimed metaphor is different from the mutual interface gag in that there are not multiple
points of view to consider, they often do not result in mishaps, and commonly deal with objects rather
than events. The mimed metaphor is used in the film The Count, in which at one point Chaplin s
character uses his cane like a pool cue in order to hit an object off the table.
At the beginning of The Immigrant Chaplin s character is hanging over the side of the boat. The
audience gets the impression that he is seasick, however we soon learn that he is actually just fishing.
This is a perfect example of switch image. In the beginning, the audience is led to believe one thing,
but with the revelation of new details we soon realize that our perception of the situation was wrong,
and generally our perception changes to something

The Heart Of Darkness And Macbeth By William Shakespeare
It can be hidden in the unwritten rules of society or tucked deep into a metaphor for the imperialistic
tendencies of Europeans hidden in the darkness of the Congo. Kurtz in The Heart of Darkness, and
Macbeth in Macbeth, display the traits of evil taking over perfectly. Although different times and
plots, both men share a craving for power, and their superiority complexes ultimately lead to their
demise. Their mental and physical health deteriorate, eventually coming out of their experiences as
irrational, delusional, and sick men. The individuality and strength that comes with each person s
moral compass is stripped away once evil finds its way into a person. The impact evil has on a person
who embraces it is complete and total consumption and control; a transition of the body and mind
along with an eventual lack of moral reasoning and decaying mental health.
From the start Macbeth and Kurtz exhibit selfish ambition which is what makes them susceptible to
evil initially. This similarity connects the characters, the start to their road of destruction and tyranny
starts with two selfish decisions made only to further themselves. Kurtz is drawn to Africa at first to
make a difference, or at least it seems this way. But rather than him going on a mission to civilize (70),
he goes on a mission to make as much money as he can. Not only that but he went from wanted to
help the Africans, only later to say exterminate all the brutes . While doing so he sees more and more

The Truth Behind The Underground Railroad
The Truth behind the Underground Railroad

November 9, 2015
2nd Period Abstract Many people know of the famous slave system called The Underground Railroad.
Throughout this generations time in school this topic have came up numerous times in our history
classes. They mostly talk about the surface of the system and how, the most famous conductor,
Harriett Tubman freed the slaves. This essay is important because it will provide you with in depth
knowledge and background about the The Underground Railroad.
The Truth Behind the Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad is one the most Historic
events in African American History. This system was during the time of slavery and its goal was to
provide slaves an undetectable way to get to the North. A majority of blacks and few whites called
Conductors , referring to a train, helped blacks plan and travel through different landscapes to reach
the North. In my Research paper I will provide information on the Influential people in the movement,
the obstacles they had to overcome, and the results of the movement.
Influential People during the Movement
Thomas Garrett Thomas Garrett was one the few white Conductors who was recognized for his work
with the Railroad. Mr. Garrett was a Quaker Abolitionist who was at the end of the journey to send
African Americans over the free Pennsylvania border. Throughout his time fighting for the slaves he
voiced his opinions clearly and believed in

Dessau Bauhaus Vs Laurenian Library
In the Dessau Bauhaus by Walter Gropius, the central element is removed, emphasizing the void left
and the bridge running through it to connect the remaining parts. In the Laurentian Library by
Michelangelo, the building plan is void of complexity, consisting of one main, large rectangle, and the
square shaped entry. The plan for the Bauhaus has a kinetic quality, while the plan for the Laurentian
Library remains stoic. While the Laurentian Library showcases elaborate details, the Bauhaus does not
rely on intricate details. but rather, it takes on a more modern approach. Both buildings have mannerist
tendencies. although the Bauhaus shows these tendencies conceptually. While Michelangelo sought to

The Mind of a Child
Unlike adults, children cannot be punished even for committing serious crimes such as murder
because the legal system indicates that young children cannot be held responsible for such crimes.
There are biological, cognitive, and emotional or social development factors behind this policy. The
biological argument for this policy holds that a child below six years would be excused from
responsibility for their actions because their part of the brain that helps in strategizing, planning, and
organization is not fully developed(Berger, 2014) . This argument further holds that it will be unfair to
expect a child to have decision making and organizational skills levels as that of adults whose brains
have been fully built. Since a child s brain is not finished being built, they cannot be totally rational;
instead, they rely on the brain s emotional parts. In this scenario under consideration, it is clear that the
child who killed the other seemed to have strongly responded with a gut response and as such he had
not evaluated the consequences of whatever he was doing. Neuropsychologists have found out that the
frontal lobe is involved in many of criminal culpability aspects, and therefore since a child s frontal
lobe is not fully developed, he or she cannot be criminally culpable (Berger, 2014).
The cognitive argument for this policy holds that a child s brain is still under a rigorous cognitive

Mental Illnesses On College Campuses
Do you feel that colleges can be unsafe for their students? Many colleges have had violent issues in
the past on their campuses like rape, murder, robbery, and even suicide. They have always been an
issue to address, and more people have been finding out which has caused them to gain concerns for
their kids heading to college. College campuses can be dangerous for enrolling students, and most
people do not even know or pay attention to why these things occur. These problems are mainly
mental illnesses caused by coursework, alcohol, and one of the most important ones, being kept a
secret from the public and since these problems have risen people have been figuring out ways to
reduce them from happening and better ways to keep students safe. ... Show more content on

According to Shari Roan s article Crisis on Campus , colleges can cause stress, depression, and
anxiety which can later lead to more severe things like suicide and drinking. For example, a college
student named Christine had stated that her mood disorder worsened and when she had received her
first quarter grades she had failed a course (Roan 2). This caused her to come back from her winter
break a whole lot more depressed than when she left (Roan 2). In Roans article she states that
according to the American College Health Assn,. About 15% of college students have been diagnosed
with depression. A 2004 survey found that nearly half of college students said they so depressed they
had difficulty functioning one or more times during the last school year. Also, The Jed Foundation
estimates that 1,100 college students a year take their own lives. American College Health Assn. s
2005 poll showed that 11% of women and 9% of men in college considered suicide at some point.
(Roan 3). The violences on colleges can be triggered by these mental illnesses or even alcohol abuse
(Roan 3). Going along with alcohol abuse, Crystal L. Keels s article The Best Kept Secret: Crime on
Campus and Everytown for Gun Safety s Missouri H 593 and H 630: Guns Everywhere mention that
alcohol can cause aggression as well as mental illnesses (Guns Everywhere 2). But with these current

Reflection Of A Look At The Medical Concertion Of The...
I attended a Board ordered deposition of your consultant, Dr. Dominic Belmonte, in the above matter

Linda Engel.
As you know, this case is established for injuries to the left shoulder, left pectoral muscle and neck.
The average weekly wage has been set at $2,034.82. At this time we are litigating the issues of degree
of disability, maximum medical improvement and permanency.
This deposition was scheduled for the testimony of your consultant, Dr. Belmonte. Dr. Belmonte
examined the claimant on two occasions, the first was on 12/29/16 and the second on 04/12/17. In his

He testified he felt the claimant was at maximum medical improvement and had a rating of 3 B under
the Board Permanency Guidelines. I asked him to explain how he reached his opinion and he indicated
that since this case involved both the neck and the left shoulder it was not amendable to a schedule
loss of use. He then turned to Table 11.2 for soft tissue spine injuries. He stated the claimant had
complaints with supporting imaging studies and therefore, under the Table 11.1 the appropriate rating
would be 3 B.
I note that Ms. Seger objected to the testimony on the issue of permanency, maintaining this issue was
not before the Board. We in fact had raised the issue at the last hearing when we submitted Dr.
Belmonte s report. I therefore had him testify to his opinion as to maximum medical improvement and
as to permanency. Ms. Seger asked no questions on cross examination on these issues.
Cross examination was extensive but the doctor did not change his opinion in any way. He reiterated
his restrictions, which he felt were fifteen (15) to twenty (20) pounds below chest level and lifting,
pushing or pulling above the chest level with the left arm.
I was pleased with the doctors testimony. I feel he testified strongly and consistently with his written
reports and his testimony was not altered or impeached in any meaningful way on cross examination.
We will obviously consult the minutes of the doctors testimony as the testimony was more

the three steps for the successful pursuit of identity rely not on the passive environment but on the
active interaction between the self and the others. Abe and Murakami strengthen this point through

Comparing Dunkin And Costa s Marketing Strategies
As coffeehouses and restaurants, Dunkin and Costa s marketing channels share the same resemblance
in how they want to approach the customers. The two companies now offer franchise option to
potential business partners, both domestic and international. Moreover, each brand adopt different
methods to increase their products presence geographically. Therefore the distribution method that
they adopt can be considered as intensive direct distribution through multichannel marketing. Products
are made and offer directly along with ads, leaflets, or promotional information to customers. At the
same time, both Dunkin and Costa also engage in business to business channel where they depend on
a network of suppliers.
At first glance, Dunkin and Costa adopt the intensive distribution strategy, using multi channel

Body Ritual Among The Nacirema Summary
Prompt #1 Horace Miner s Body Ritual among the Nacirema was a very entertaining essay. The essay
made made fun of American culture without directly stating the name of the culture, other than
including the word American spelled backwards. Miner bring to the reader s attention the odd rituals
practiced in America that the normal citizen would not find strange at all. However, by presenting his
essay in this form he shows how strange American customs are from the view of someone in a
different country. Miner begins his essay by describing the American culture as if it were a tribe.
Although he does so secretly, Horace Miner does state that the tribe is located between Canada and
Mexico. He then states that they have a developed market, yet they re main concern is on the body. He
then goes on to talk about the ritual areas in the homes on the Nacirema people, bathrooms, where the
people practice they re odd rituals. He does not use direct terms for the medicine men, nor any of the
other physicians that are seen in the daily lives of American people. Miner continues this process
while only leaving slight hints. Horace Miner does a terrific job in this satire. Once view of this paper
is noticed, the reader can be entertained by the mysterious ways of the Nacerima people. This essay
has brought attention to the ways of American culture, which is not only informative but very

Uncle Tom s Cabin has been explained as being a history of harmful acts towards Blacks in America
for a period of a hundred and thirty years (Stowe, Nineteenth ). 51).The book Uncle Tom s Cabin was
one of History s favorite books (Stowe, Nineteenth 1). It talks about how Tom would do anything for

From Homer’s Odyssey to Star Wars
From Homer s Odyssey to Star Wars The Unchanging Path of the Hero
In the fiction world heroes have been one of the most entertaining figures. It has always been fun and
interesting to read about heroic stories and about different obstacles that heroes had overcome. When
someone mentions the word hero it is more likely to think of characters like Batman or James Bond,
but it is for sure that if we had the chance to ask the same question centuries before, the answer would
have been different. From comics or TV it is seen that heroes change physically and spiritually
through time, but the heroic pattern stays always the same when moving from ancient times to today s
heroes.
The first hero whose pattern I am going to unfold is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later he faces the sphinx and defeats her by answering her riddle. This is a heroic act, considering that
nobody else in the kingdom could find an answer to that riddle. This victory makes him a king and he
marries with his mother just like mentioned in the beginning of the story. This shows the difficulties
he has to face. At the end of the story he is realizes his sins and punishes himself This part can be
considered as his redemption, defeating the most difficult opponent he had ever faced: himself (Green
73).
The second hero I want to give as an example of heroic pattern from ancient times is Perceval who is a
knight of King Arthur s court. In Perceval s case heroic pattern is again starts with a journey and the
reason here is Perceval s need to find his mother, whom he left years ago to become a knight. He
enters the unknown in search for his mother and just like a classical hero; he faces trials on his way.
He fights other knights and defeats them. In his journey he comes across the Fisher King who is
wounded and cannot walk and the king offers a feast for him and he accepts. During the dinner he sees
a grail which is supposed to have great healing powers and a bleeding lance. Unfortunately, Perceval
doesn t ask the king the reason who does the Grail serve and why does the lance bleed.

Social Media s Impact On Society
In today s society not all people welcome social media into their lives and thus restrict their access and

pivotal part affecting everyday life as we know it today. Despite these claims, the advancements in

platforms are literally taking over the business arena becoming the driving force in determining
whether a business is staying relevant, not to mention taking advantage of emerging opportunities. As
of today there have been a surge of social media outlets which have made their way into mainstream
society. Today, many of these platforms are commonly known as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn, LinkedIn Pulse, Google+, Xing, Renren, Disqus, Tumblr, Twoo,

complicated for people to distinguish between meaningful and productive relationships in which we
foster and cherish for the long haul versus the numerous casual relationships formed through social

Bees Vs Honey Bees
When you are stung by a bee for the first time you won t have a severe allergic reaction, even if you
first reaction is mild the reactions get worse with each sting you receive from the bee. Most bees can
sting more than once, but it depends on the type of bee it is. Honey bees for example die after the first
sting they give you. Only female bees and wasp can sting you because venom pumped from attached
venom sacs, is injected into the victim through stylus. When a bee or wasp stings you, the lancets
become imbedded in your skin. They pull the stylus into your flesh and the venom sacs pump venom
through your body. Different kinds of bees live in different habitats. The bumble bee often nests in the

Farm sent Arnold a letter: 1) reminding her of her outstanding discovery requests; 2) indicating that
we had not yet received her outstanding discovery requests; and 3) requesting that Arnold provide her

ARGUMENT
I. Arnold s Failure to Provide Discovery Warrants the Dismissal of Her Meritless Claim.
Maryland Rule 3 421(h) permits a party to move for sanctions including the dismissal of a claim if a
party fails to fails to serve a response after proper services of interrogatories. Maryland s discovery
process is one of compulsion. Dorsey v. Nold, 362 Md. 241, 252 (2001). Maryland Rule 3 421(d)
provides that a party must answer interrogatories and requests for production of documents within 15
days after service of the interrogatories or within five days after the date on which that party s notice
of intention to defend is required, whichever is later. Plaintiff s responses have been due since

Diels Alder Reaction
The Diels Alder Reaction is an addition reaction between a 1,3 diene and a dienophile. In this reaction,
furan, the diene, reacted with maleic anhydride, the dienophile, to form exo 7 oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept
anhydride, the adduct. The adduct was recovered via vacuum filtration, and the melting point, 1H
NMR and 12C NMR Spectroscopy was obtained. This Diels Alder Reaction yielded an exo adduct as
opposed to an endo product.
In more detail, the Diels Alder reaction is the reaction in which the dienophile adds to the alkenes on
the diene. The reaction forms a new 6 membered ring and new C C sigma bonds. The reaction
involves breaking 3 pi bonds, and forming 2 new C C sigma bonds and one new C=C double bond.

Midsummer Night Dream Venus And Adonis Analysis

Ms. Chirat
Period 4
May 13, 2017 In the works of Midsummer s Night Dream, Venus and Adonis, and, Shakespeare uses
themes, motifs, allusions, and imagery to suggest his audience reread and deeply analyze confusing
passages several times to fully understand his masterpieces. In the play, A Midsummer s Night Dream
begins with Theseus, Duke of Athens, preparing for his marriage to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons,
with a four day festival. Egeus, a citizen of Athens, goes to see Theseus with a complaint against his
daughter: although Egeus has promised Hermia in marriage to Demetrius, who loves her, Lysander has
won Hermia s heart and refuses to obey her father and marry Demetrius. Theseus speaks to Hermia,
warning her to expect to be sent to a nunnery or put to death if she doesn t obey her father s wishes.
Lysander interrupts, accusing Demetrius of being fickle in love, saying he was once engaged to
Hermia s friend, Helena but abandoned her after he laid eyes on Hermia. (Shakespeare, Act I Scene i)
Demetrius, Egeus, Hippolyta, and Theseus take off leaving Hermia alone with Lysander. While given
the time to be alone, Hermia and Lysander create a plan to be married at her house, because the manor
is outside of Athens they would be free from the Athenian law. Later in the scene, Helena enters the
room, lovesick and deeply depressed because Demetrius no longer loves her. From the Outset,
Shakespeare subtly displays the lovers as a group out of balance, a

Crime And Punishment Comparison Essay
Even though Crime and Punishment and The Stranger were published almost one century apart, both
novels depict many common themes with similar characterizations that contribute greatly to the
themes and objectives of the works. Crime and Punishment s, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov and
The Stranger s Meursault, each share stoic personalities, thoughts, and experiences that mold the
themes of criminality and guilt, morality, love, and religion; because of these significant similarities,
the title of both novels can apply to either character. The commencement of the two novels
immediately exemplifies the detached and apathetic nature of Raskolnikov and Meursault. In the
beginning of Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov desperately avoids ... Show more content on

Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov murdered his landlady and her sister. His initial motive was for the
acquisition of money and jewels, and he came to the conclusion that his land lady was a terrible
person anyway. This leads to the theme of criminality and justice, and yields the reader to the question
of whether murder is ever okay, even if the person is horrible. Because of Raskolnikov internal
conflict with the murders, the reader acquires sympathy for Raskolnikov an ax murder and for his
plight. Many, if not all of the characters, commit different degrees of crimes either moral crimes, legal
crimes, or in many cases both. Raskolnikov committed the ultimate heinous crime and subsequently is
punished through his own subconscious and guilt before any judicial punishment.
Meursault committed murder when he shot and killed the Arab on the beach during a fight. While on
trial for the killing, the trial shifts from the actual murder to Meursault s stoic personality and personal
life. As a result, his lack of exhibiting public remorse for his mother s death caused him to be found
guilty. It was not his crime of murder. but his crime of lack of empathy that caused him to become

Death of Baby P
Peter Connelly also known as Baby P was a British 17 months old boy who died in London in August

that officials had not followed through with obtaining an interim care order that would have removed
Peter from his home when they had agreed that legal grounds had existed for doing so six months
before he died; key officials also failed to attend a 25 July 2007 meeting intended to decide if it would

What Would be Your Candidate s Position on the Death...
If You Were Running a Political Campaign, What Would be Your Candidate s Position on the Death
Penalty?
Abstract
... by taking the position of capital punishment reform, we feel that we can appease the most people.
Our candidate would risk alienating some of the more moderate voters if we recommended a more
radical stance. Our stance appeals to both sides because we do not abolish the death penalty outright,
nor do we leave the capital punishment situation unchanged. We will appease those looking for
abolishment by greatly restricting the use of the death penalty, and, as stated earlier, eliminating most
of the problems within the capital punishment system. And, we will appease those who favor the
status quo by not totally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In regards to the death penalty in the United States, many people either believe that the key is issue
that the death penalty is needed because it properly punishes a criminal for the serious offenses they
commit, or cry afoul at the government for putting people to death, calling the death penalty a human
right s violation. The whole main issue boils down to a matter of life or death, who has the right to live
and who has the right to take life, when and why. The issue of the death penalty becomes very
complicated though when the grey areas are applied. The grey areas are those thoughts and ideas that
must be taken into account thus making the issue far more than black and white.
The first grey area issue is that many people, especially in the more organized Christian
denominations, Baptists, Episcopalians, and Lutherans believe the death penalty is a just form of
punishment due to their moral teachings, especially that justice consists of the ideal an eye for an eye
(Heim 2), but they feel that it is unnecessarily used in the United States (Bedau). Therefore in a case
like this the argument of the death penalty s legality is no longer an issue, it becomes an issue of in
what cases can the death penalty be fairly implied (EWTN). This issue is rather important because the
majority of Americans with religious affiliations

modern day technology and the inventions throughout history. The use of something such as the

When this problem was brought to the attention of a certain French scientist and mathematician,
Blaise Pascal, he and Otto von Guericke did several experiments with suction which eventually led to
the discovery of the vacuum. This discovery of the vacuum led to the discovery of something we live

Jean Picard, who was carrying a mercury filled barometer back to his observatory. What is now known

The Public Relations Value Of Super Bowl Advertising

the NFL. It has become the premier event for new television advertising. With half of the ten, all time

But there is another advantage that can come out of having your name or product aired during the big
game. Free publicity. The social factor of public fascination with Super Bowl advertisements can
create huge amounts of free publicity. People are interested in Super Bowl commercials and watch
them closely, which allows the media to give them a lot of attention (Goldberg 15). There is also a
public relations value of having ads rated highly by media critics and the public, which often results in
even more free publicity. Obviously, this free publicity can be a definite bonus for a company, while
helping to reduce the otherwise expensive per commercial costs from a cost benefit standpoint
(Goldberg 16). However, as many companies have come to find out, paying the expensive airtime
price and running a commercial during the Super Bowl does not guarantee the company will benefit
from it s ad. Empower MediaMarketing(EM2), one of the country s largest media buyers, spent
several years researching the question of when it makes sense to air an ad during the Super Bowl.
Their study, which was released in 2000, focused on how people watch commercials during the big
game. It reported that people pay more attention to Super Bowl ads than regular television ads.
However, the study also showed that the average commercial is only remembered by 10% of people,
which translates into just 14% remembering Super Bowl ads.

Vikings negatively impacted political leaders in England by occupying their lands. These Anglo Saxon
kings tried to buy off the Vikings from their kingdoms to remove them (Davis). Following the

Gendercide In The Bosnia-Herzegovina Genocide
Genocide has been around for ages, and usually occurs during a military conflict. When people think
of genocide, they think of the annihilation of a race, religion, or class including all members of the
group. Killing all the people in a family was considered the root and branch method. This was used to
assure that no other generations could come in the future. This is not the case for all genocides. In the
Bosnia Herzegovina genocide, battle aged men were murdered while the women were taken as sex
slaves. This is still considered genocide because the Serbs, killing all males who were Muslim or
Croats, would make it impossible for them to continue to reproduce and continue their ethnic group.

Gendercide is the targeting of one gender in genocide, and in this case it is directed towards the males.
Rape is a weapon used in history, and by the Serbs, to humiliate and destroy the lives of women and
their culture. The Serbs used it to make the women never want to come back to their homeland.
Killing the men and enslaving the women is to prevent the next generation of Muslims and Croats.
The killing had started due to the breaking up of Yugoslavia, which was filled with mixing ethnic
groups, and religions in many of their cities. They would kill the male children to make sure they
could not plot revenge, or to reproduce (Jones 465). The males were targeted for killings because they
were seen as a military threat, unlike the women. The Serb s goal was the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia
Herzegovina, and the incorporate it into greater Serbia. Their strategy was to terrorize the non Serb
population into fleeing, to murder Muslim and Croat men, and then to deport the remaining
population. The killings and the rapes were done by Serbian men. Some willing and others unwilling.
Some Serbs were approached by soldiers and told they must participate and help with the cleansing.

The book also states the fact that to become successful in the organization, one should have
management and leadership skills in balance. As the imbalance between these two can be harmful for
the person and for the organization he is working for. Book has also given the way you can analyze
your own skills and if you are leader or manager which can be very helpful for anyone to examine by

Symbols have been used to express power throughout history. Judges have gavels. Police officers wear
badges. Kings wear crowns. Symbols are used to categorize people into different social classes or
groups. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, those in leadership use tangible objects as symbols
in an attempt to gain control over the group.
There are two main symbols of power in the novel the conch shell and the ???? PIGGY s GLASSES?
BEAST?
CONCH
At the beginning of the novel, one symbol of power is the conch shell. Piggy finds the shell and
realizes it can be used as a horn to call the boys together. We can use this to call the others. Have a
meeting. They ll come when they hear us. Later, he suggests that whoever holds the conch shell in
their meetings has permission to speak, and everyone accepts that the shell is a symbol of authority.
Ralph uses the conch as a symbol of dominance. He always speaks using the conch in meetings: I ll
give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking (39). The boys gain
power through holding the conch shell it represents law and order. Golding writes that, Most
obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. Toward the end of the novel, Jack no longer
recognizes the conch shell as a symbol of power and authority. Jack declares that the conch is
meaningless as a symbol of power, and its decline in importance parallels the decline of civilization on

David Foster Wallace Water Speech Summary
In the opening of David Foster Wallace s speech, he talks about two young fish swimming past an
older adult fish who is swimming in the opposite direction. The older fish asked them a question about
the water, and yet they had no idea what water is. Wallace made an interesting point with this story by
emphasizing that what is right in front of us we tend not to be conscious of it. Wallace painted a
picture for the audience about two men in a bar arguing about religion. The significance to this story is
that one person can interrupt the same experience or situation differently. Both of the men are too self
centered to take into consideration of one another s beliefs. They are closed minded to their own
beliefs. Another good point that Wallace

Evaluation Of A Evaluation Policy Evaluation
Trochim (2009) provided in depth information on policy evaluation. He focused on the importance of
evaluation policy role in regards to principles that an organization or group use to make decisions and
actions when doing evaluation. The author argued that the one challenge that organization lack when
engaging in evaluation is transparency of evaluation policies. By not disclosing their evaluation
policies it can not be replicated or understood by new organization members. In addition, creates a
way for organizations to make up policies without getting feedback about evaluation best practices.
Trochim (2009) noted that evaluation policies are important to communicate mechanism on what
evaluation should be done, what resources expended and how they they should be accomplished. He
further noted that it is important to show who is responsible for the development. He also introduced a
evaluation policy model, which highlighted the interaction of different types of evaluation policies,
structures and principles. deLeon (1983) this week also explained the concepts of policy evaluation,
which is a multidisciplinary approach of the policy process. He also explained the role it has on
program termination. However, the author argued there is an integration of evaluation and termination
that has occurred in many programs. He further highlighted that these two frameworks are essential in
the policy process. There are several motivating factors that the author suggested that can lead to

British Youth Culture s Perception Of Drugs Essay
There is a common notion that drugs in the modernist era were used as a tool for youths to enhance or
escape reality; much of this statement is true, though this has been the case for most of history. The
unique aspect of British youth culture and its recreational use of drugs is that it produces a platform
for the normalization of the perception of an array of drugs. Since the mid twentieth century, the
prevalence of drug use among adolescents has witnessed a steady, upward curve; this may indicate an
actual increase in the number of participants using drugs, but more so reveals a more open, honest
mindset towards recreational drug use, despite the obvious health risks. Since the 1950s, British youth
culture s approach to drugs radically changed people s perception of drugs; it not only embraced
recreational drug use, but gradually normalized it over time. This has resulted in an open, casual
attitude towards a series of narcotics within British youth culture. This is credited to social, economic,
and political issues as well as the evolving leisurely activities, music and trends that took place during
the Mod era to today.
While drugs have always been a part of society, its perception and sense of casualness changed after
the Second World War due to economic, social, and political factors. Post war Britain (as well as
America) saw a parallel increase in both population and the economy, creating the Boom Generation
as well as a new consumerist society. This is crucial in

How Did I Grow Up In New York
I grew up in New York State, home of the city that never sleeps. This state is known for Manhattan or
the Big Apple, but that is only one of New York s five boroughs. Where in New York did I grow up?
Well, in New York there is a quaint borough called Staten Island. It is in Staten Island where I did just
that. My birth took place in Manhattan and I have lived on Staten Island ever since I had been released
from the hospital where I was born in. Staten Island is a lesser known part of New York State, filled
with many parks. I live in Richmond County in Staten Island. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a
nice, safe neighborhood with plenty of children around my age to play with. The children in my
neighborhood became my first friends.

These ideas include representative leaders like the President, or the bicameral legislature. Similarly, the jury system is another structure of the government that many people hold close to their hearts. Although it seems like the ultimate way that the citizens can self govern, is the jury system really the best way to reach a verdict in civil and/or criminal cases? The bottom line is that the jury system is an outdated structure. Specifically, bench trials, or trials decided only by a judge, are much more effective than jury trials because judges are more educated, less susceptible to popular influence, and are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In trials like that of Casey Anthony, the mother arrested and charged with killing her two year old daughter Caylee, the popularity and widespread coverage of the case definitely influenced how citizens across the country believed Anthony should be sentenced (Document D). Anyone who saw one news story on the case that was then called to the jury probably already had formed their opinion on the status of Anthony s innocence, without reviewing any court evidence. Consequently, their predisposed opinion, similar to the cats on the jury in Cartoon 3 of Document E, could have resulted in a weighted outcome. Also, the fear of a wrong decision made by the jury could have motivated a juror to vote solely for the outcome most popularly desirable. For example, Document D quotes Janine Gonzalez, a nearby member of Anthony s community, as saying She (Casey Anthony) better move and move to a faraway place. Even though, in the end, Anthony was declared innocent, the fear of her life as well as the possible violence that could occur after the verdict could have been enough to sway a juror to convict her just to satisfy a popular ... • 3. Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin Essay Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin We have all seen it done before, either in real life or in the movies. A situation is funny because of the misinterpretation of someone s actions or the complete conflict of what a situation seems to be and what it really is. People come into contact with sight gags all the time. One might be trying to be sneaky and hide something and then when someone looks, one pretends to be doing something else not to get caught. One could also pantomime using an umbrella as a baseball bat. These are both basic forms of sight gags. Sight gags are an essential part of comedy, especially the silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin s time. A sight gag is a visual form of comedy. In this form of comedy, the actors rely on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The accuser, however, had not seen that Chaplin had put the money in her pocket in the first place. This misunderstanding makes the scene funny when the man tells the woman to check her pockets and she is overjoyed to find money. The second sight gag discussed is the mimed metaphor, which is when an actor uses pantomime as a gag. For this, the actor uses an object that is very recognizable and pantomimes something that is not its proper use. This is a kind of visual simile, and is generally used in silent films more than sound films. The mimed metaphor is different from the mutual interface gag in that there are not multiple points of view to consider, they often do not result in mishaps, and commonly deal with objects rather than events. The mimed metaphor is used in the film The Count, in which at one point Chaplin s character uses his cane like a pool cue in order to hit an object off the table. At the beginning of The Immigrant Chaplin s character is hanging over the side of the boat. The audience gets the impression that he is seasick, however we soon learn that he is actually just fishing. This is a perfect example of switch image. In the beginning, the audience is led to believe one thing, but with the revelation of new details we soon realize that our perception of the situation was wrong, and generally our perception changes to something ... • 4. The Heart Of Darkness And Macbeth By William Shakespeare It can be hidden in the unwritten rules of society or tucked deep into a metaphor for the imperialistic tendencies of Europeans hidden in the darkness of the Congo. Kurtz in The Heart of Darkness, and Macbeth in Macbeth, display the traits of evil taking over perfectly. Although different times and plots, both men share a craving for power, and their superiority complexes ultimately lead to their demise. Their mental and physical health deteriorate, eventually coming out of their experiences as irrational, delusional, and sick men. The individuality and strength that comes with each person s moral compass is stripped away once evil finds its way into a person. The impact evil has on a person who embraces it is complete and total consumption and control; a transition of the body and mind along with an eventual lack of moral reasoning and decaying mental health. From the start Macbeth and Kurtz exhibit selfish ambition which is what makes them susceptible to evil initially. This similarity connects the characters, the start to their road of destruction and tyranny starts with two selfish decisions made only to further themselves. Kurtz is drawn to Africa at first to make a difference, or at least it seems this way. But rather than him going on a mission to civilize (70), he goes on a mission to make as much money as he can. Not only that but he went from wanted to help the Africans, only later to say exterminate all the brutes . While doing so he sees more and more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Mind Of A Child The Mind Of A Child Student s Name Institution The Mind of a Child Unlike adults, children cannot be punished even for committing serious crimes such as murder because the legal system indicates that young children cannot be held responsible for such crimes. There are biological, cognitive, and emotional or social development factors behind this policy. The biological argument for this policy holds that a child below six years would be excused from responsibility for their actions because their part of the brain that helps in strategizing, planning, and organization is not fully developed(Berger, 2014) . This argument further holds that it will be unfair to expect a child to have decision making and organizational skills levels as that of adults whose brains have been fully built. Since a child s brain is not finished being built, they cannot be totally rational; instead, they rely on the brain s emotional parts. In this scenario under consideration, it is clear that the child who killed the other seemed to have strongly responded with a gut response and as such he had not evaluated the consequences of whatever he was doing. Neuropsychologists have found out that the frontal lobe is involved in many of criminal culpability aspects, and therefore since a child s frontal lobe is not fully developed, he or she cannot be criminally culpable (Berger, 2014). The adduct was recovered via vacuum filtration, and the melting point, 1H NMR and 12C NMR Spectroscopy was obtained. This Diels Alder Reaction yielded an exo adduct as opposed to an endo product. In more detail, the Diels Alder reaction is the reaction in which the dienophile adds to the alkenes on the diene. The reaction forms a new 6 membered ring and new C C sigma bonds. In the play, A Midsummer s Night Dream begins with Theseus, Duke of Athens, preparing for his marriage to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, with a four day festival. Egeus, a citizen of Athens, goes to see Theseus with a complaint against his daughter: although Egeus has promised Hermia in marriage to Demetrius, who loves her, Lysander has won Hermia s heart and refuses to obey her father and marry Demetrius. In regards to the death penalty in the United States, many people either believe that the key is issue that the death penalty is needed because it properly punishes a criminal for the serious offenses they commit, or cry afoul at the government for putting people to death, calling the death penalty a human right s violation. The whole main issue boils down to a matter of life or death, who has the right to live and who has the right to take life, when and why. The issue of the death penalty becomes very complicated though when the grey areas are applied. The grey areas are those thoughts and ideas that must be taken into account thus making the issue far more than black and white. The first grey area issue is that many people, especially in the more organized Christian denominations, Baptists, Episcopalians, and Lutherans believe the death penalty is a just form of punishment due to their moral teachings, especially that justice consists of the ideal an eye for an eye (Heim 2), but they feel that it is unnecessarily used in the United States (Bedau). Therefore in a case like this the argument of the death penalty s legality is no longer an issue, it becomes an issue of in what cases can the death penalty be fairly implied (EWTN).
